Chris kicks ass!
Doesn't care about students; he can be very rude; shows favoritism
Knows his stuff! Passionate about subject. Wants students to do well.
Great teacher, do your stuff you will do well, accent cracks you up
hard tests, nice, gotta study all the time unless your just really talented
A very hard class but he gives good notes and wants people to do well.
REAL hard tests, long lectures, boring as watching grass grow... but the topic is interesting
VERY nice teacher, however, you better study if you want to do well, tests aren't easy, if you go to office hours he will help you.
hard class, but a great teacher, very caring about his students, gives us good notes
Very hard class, requires lots of studying. Reading the book helps a lot, b/c sometimes he is confusing
Hard, Hard, and oh yeah did I say HARD?

Couldn't hear him half the time.... sort of undercompensated for the deaf thing..... nice enough, but talks to the board. Super boring! Lysozyme..... WHAT? umm hum
hes way into it than he should be... to much in depth and detail.. hard to understand cause of hearing problems... tests are hard.. unforgiving about his time
He is boring and most of the time you cant understand a word he says. Take the class with someone else if possible, tests are way too hard.
He is a teacher that will test by his notes...all you have to do is take them home and study...dont even bother getting the book because you dont need it to do well...he is boring and this lectures take forever it seems but the tests are strait forward
If you get to know him, hes nice, otherwise he isn't the friendliest person. His lectures are very boring, tests are hard unless you know your notes by heart. Don't take his lab, he has no idea what is going on and has to ask other teachers.

Great teacher. Go to his office hours and he will be much more willing to help -- take advantage of this. He tells really funny stories and although the subject isnt all that thrilling, class is fun.
HE IS HOT!!! tests on the note...however, LONG lecture~~~but still HOT!!!
great teacher and tells funny stories during class. tests are very straightforward from notes/book figures. very interesting class, i love it
HOT!!!!! HOT!!!!!!!!!!!! HOT! who cares what he says in the class. Take the class just to look at him. i dont even know what the class is about, but its worth it.
The information he taught was detailed-but it had to be. He made this class enjoyable and not so boring and he really tried to get the class to participate. His test were very fair, only the stuff he taught was on the exams. Great class overall
one of the worst teachers i have ever had the experience of being around. should go back to harvard
He is a great and helpful professor. The tests are straight forward. As long as you know the notes well, you will do great.
Tests are hard, but from the notes. Dr. Lantz is so nice and so willing to help, and he really wants students to understand the material.
took plant bio? class in 98/99. I took great notes- basically everything he said word for word, didn't even need to open book. He tested on everything/randomly. Great. But you'll need to know every single microscopic detail!
This class is EXTREMELY HARD and fast paced. His notes are dissorganized and his tests are picky. His lectures are very detailed and overwhelming. Be prepared to take atleast 5 pages of notes (front and back) every class. This is a class you have to work at.
Great class, great prof...he is one *hot* tamale!
Hard class! Lots of information. Very fast paced. Not a great instructor but knows his stuff. Go to class, take good notes and be prepared to do a lot of work on your own.
Dr. Lantz was an awesome teacher. He explained things really well and very thoroughly. It is a lot of information but he does not make you learn things that are not nescessary. It is a very hard class but he does a good job at breaking it down. Best Bio professor that I have had yet
Lantz is certainly not the most animated professor. He presents clearly and breaks down what you need to know. REALLY good notes and PAY ATTENTION to details.Usually very busy during office hours and hard to get to w/o appt. Tough class but do-able. He has difficultly hearing so speak clearly.
Comes across as cold and condescending. Has a bad reputation on campus and in the department...seems to click better with girls. Most guys don't like him much. Tough class with tons of material. Expects you to study every detail that he covers in lecture. Multiple choice questions are picky.
Its an alright class. If you're a girl, don't sit in the front row with a skirt. He's a bit seedy.
Extremely difficult prof. Started 1st day of class saying he dislikes this class and failed his first time. Knows material fairly well, but when a student asks a ques., doesnt always know answer. When ques asked, he makes you feel dumb for asking it. Tests very difficult, hard to finish all on time
Really interesting class, DEF take the lab to make it worthwhile. Tells funny stories, must study a lot though to do well on tests. Def recommend this class
Very poor professor. Went to him on several occasions for help and wound up sitting in a dark office reading over my notes while he talked on the phone about his divorce, made power point slides, and typed emails.
Def. not a fun class.Avoid him if you can. doesn't enjoy teaching this.test extremely hard and long, mult choice,essays,fill-in-blank -whatever to have kids do poorly.never once finished whole test. so boring that I wanted to skip everytime...because of him i had to repeat course-A in lab,D in class
Dr. Lantz is the best instructor in the biology department! He is knowledgable and his class is extremely rewarding-- you learn A LOT!! Very super cool once you get to know him. Mast Cells and Basophils rule while B1 cells are slightly "special"
Fabulous professor. You have to work hard in his class but it is worth your while. No stupid busy work. His lectures are top-notch, tells you everything you need to know. Extremely nice guy who is absolutely, inspiringly, brilliant.
I'm tired of whining and complaining about how hard Dr. Lantz is. He actually requires that you know the material, so what!? I got an A in two classes with him, so can you.Ignore the hype and take his classes if need be.
Worthless class. If he doesn't like you, you're screwed. If he likes you, or you're an attractive female, you'll be fine. Just look at who is always sitting in his office for help (attractive females).
Difficult, ridiculous, crazy, hard, all come to mind when i think of his lab section. doesnt get grades back in time, refuses to answer questions during class time, takes a easy concept and makes it harder. AVOID LIKE THE Yersinia pestis (Black Plague) haha you'll understand when you get Dr Seifert 4 lecture, try and get Dr S for lab as well!!!

Lectures are clear-never went to office hours. The key to Lantz's classes is figuring out how he structures his tests. He's consistent in how he makes them, listen to what he says in class will be on the test, and know it. About 6-10 points of the tests are super specific and require notes memorization, which is what I did.
Great professor who gives exciting lectures. This class will challenge you but he is very fair when it comes to exams. I highly recommend this class to everyone.
Good professor who makes his test fairly easy. Nothing on the test is really a chalange because almost all of it come right from his notes. Pretty good professor who knows what he is talking about
Great professor. Hard but fair. Shows lots of films.Very willing to help with material during office hours.
Great class! Dr. Lantz was very helpful during office hours. See him! It makes his tests much easier.
he's a nice guy but not very clear on what he wants as far as lab write-ups go. He'll deduct points too if you don't "predict" what he wants, he's helpful and wants you to come to office hours though!
I don't know what people were talking about, one of the most entertaining, easy classes in the biology department. A bio class with a class average at a 'B'... Anyways, Dr. L knows his stuff and does a pretty good job at relaying the info to students and has great resources (books and movies). All pre-med peps need to take this class
Dr. Lantz is so so. He tends to go on random rants and sometimes even go off topic, he isn't the most enthusiastic of professors either. He grades fairly tough on the quizes he gives. During class when you're trying to get work done he walks around and tries to have conversations with people, ignoring the fact that he's disturbing them.
Awesome class....lots of material to memorize but none of it is all that conceptually difficult. Takes attendance. Has fun in class assignments. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone. Easy A if you really study for the tests
Loved the material! HATED the teacher!! If his teaching method was better I probable would have done a lot better than I did. Quizzes are fairly easy, but they're not at all like the tests. The tests are much more nit-picky than the quizzes. Study hard....that's all I can say
I do not really understand the negative comments by others towards Lantz. Dr. Lantz's immuno class was one of the most interesting and well taught classes i took at jmu. He changed his class to benefit his students. Also, there is no busy work like most bio classes. TAKE HIM!! dont listen to the other comments..class average of 80 on every exam!!
The material was awesome. Tests were really difficult. He packs a ton of information on to a single slide so it was difficult to pick out the important info. He wasn't very organized he jumped around and came back to subjects (made it difficult to follow sometimes). Managed an A- but it took a lot more work than O Chem. Cool class. Bad prof.
Very interesting class, well taught. Periodic quizzes given helps you to keep up with the material, and really helps your over all grade. Tests/quizzes right from the notes. One of the most interesting bio classes I took at JMU.
Horrible
Hear my words: Go to class, copy the powerpoint verbatum, study those notes 4-5 times before the test, and there's a great chance that you'll get around a 93%. Dr. Lantz is somewhat hard of hearing and people misinterpret him as being cold and standoffish. Not true. He's really nice but curt, an odd an combination, but overall a great guy.
This class is tough for gsci 104. Take another one. Quizzes are difficult. BORINGGGGG
Lantz is really sweet. Medical parasitology is an interesting subject and tests WERE NOT hard. This is a group based learning class which was sweet, and we watched a lot of videos! TAKE HIM!
Class is easy. There are tons of quizzes, which require straight memorization, and tests which are even easier than the quizzes. Class time goes by so fast because of all the videos you watch!
Most interesting + useful class I've taken at JMU! Lantz is very organized, clear, helpful, and tells you what you need to know for tests. Tests are not hard if you study lecture and take notes from book. A must take if you're pre-vet or pre-med!
Intimidating and unhelpful. Not recommended.
Literally the best teacher I've ever had at JMU. Super interesting and makes the material fun to learn. Quizzes are kind of difficult but the tests are super straight forward and fair. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Literally the best class/teacher I've had at JMU in all of my four years. This silver fox is funny, fair, and smart. Such an interesting class and Dr. Lantz makes it easy to understand and fun!
The class was difficult at first until I began to focus less on the book material and more on the lecture slides presented in class. Dr. Lantz is a funny guy who can be a little intimidating at first but is really nice once you get to know him! I highly recommend this class.
Immunology is a rough class. Lots of proteins and mechanisms to memorize. The exams are very tricky, lots of critical thinking. If you don't know the material 100% inside and out you will not do well. Office hours are always crowded, if you don't go you will not do well on the exam essays. Many people in my class were repeating it.
Immunology is a pretty tough course. There are pathways and molecules to memorize but if you give yourself a couple days to do it, you can pass. This guy teaches it about as clear cut as it can be, and with some good humor. He provided review sessions before tests when office hours were crowded which were GREAT.
He's a great professor and he is very helpfulapproachable when you ask him questions. Great class and very interesting.
Lantz is clear about his expectations and the subject matter is interesting. He is a very approachable and makes class interesting. This is a challenging course so only take it if you are interested in parasitology.
Immunology is difficult but if you attend class Lantz spoon feeds you all the information. This is a challenging subject to tackle but Lantz presents it in a clear, concise way and makes the class interesting.
If you read the sections and come to class prepared, you'll have no trouble with this class. Not nearly as difficult as Immunology... 25% of your grade is group tests. Don't get tripped up on the details and you'll go far!
class was really hard. The material was interesting but memorizing too many small details about the life cycle and body parts of parasites and possible diseases was too much. His tests have fill in the blanks and short answers and he might ask about the most detailed stuff. if you are good at memorizing hundreds of names and terms then go for it.
This class is an easy C, a pretty easy B but a hard A. 25% of your grade is dependent on the weekly quizzes so if you don't prepare adequately it'll be hard to get that A. He does expect you to know some pretty specific details but the course is arranged in a such a way that the reading is never overwhelming and everything you learn is interesting.
Very cool and laid back professor. Readings aren't bad (only 3-5 pages per parasite). Weekly schedules IRATs (individual quizzes) are very tough and require thoroughly readingreviewing, but these are balanced out by equally weighted TRATs taken after the individual quizzes as a group. Tests are difficult, but fair. Very approachable and helpful.
The class is interesting, but the textbook is a little outdated and adds unnecessary fluff to specific areas of focus, making the determination of essential information convoluted. The quizzes are exceptionally specific, which freaks you out psychologically for upcoming tests. Tests are practically all hand-written. You don't know it; you're screwe
Lantz is by far my favorite professor I've had at JMU. Immunology is only a tough course if you don't put forth the effort to study. he's very good at lecturing and very good at sparking your critical thinking skills if you go talk to him in office hours. TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WONT REGRET IT
Lantz is a great guy, he has TONS of great experiences and stories that keep lectures interesting. He is a hard professor though, don't take him if you are looking for an easy class because this isn't it. He clearly loves this material and wants you to know it too. The tests are long and they're not just multiple choice. Study hard...
Lantz. Man. What a tough teacher. I had him for both BIO 364 and BIO 420. If you want to be challenged, take his courses. They are definitely not easy, and if you even skip a day of class, you better be well prepared for the next class you make. As a person he is a sweet guy, but a hard-as-nails grader. Classes aren't for the faint of heart.
He knows his stuff and makes material easy to follow and entertaining. As a bio elective, parasitology is challenging but very interesting. Dr. Lantz is the kind of professor who enjoys joking around with you
Lantz is the man. He's funny and cares about his students. He will always be honest when he doesn't know an answer to a question brought up in lecture. His lectures are very boring, just reading off of a powerpoint, but the tests aren't too bad. Multiple choice/matching with a few short answer. Would take again.
Dr. Lantz just reads off the power-points. The class is boring, but he tries his best by telling us interesting stories related to the material. He expects you to know everything that's on the power-point, unless he specifically said no. Overall, it is an interesting class, but you have to learn A LOT of NEW materials in a short amount of time.
Skipped almost every class and never scored less than an A on a test or quiz. Why did this work? Because he only reads from a powerpoint. I felt that my time was better spent teaching myself the material rather than falling asleep in his lectures.
Lantz is AWESOME, the class is so interesting. He adds in great videos and links during class. Most classes you take group quizzes but the small amount of lectures are bearable. He is super passionate about what he is teaching and you can tell. I really enjoyed the class-it is alot of reading the textbook but if you do that then it is an easy A.
Lantz is awesome. This class isn't necessarily hard, but you just have to put in the effort for it. It's very interesting material though so the effort isn't painful. The tests are short answer and fill in mostly but if you study adequately you will be fine. He makes the class fun and you are put in teams which helps a lot. I really enjoyed him.
Dr Lantz is a cool guy and funny. This class is interesting and I liked the material. However, I would not go as far to say that this class "is an easy A" like he says. I struggled a bit in the beginning of this class. There's alot of information you need to know for RAs and tests. If you miss more than one class he takes 10pts off your next test.
Hardest class. Material is cool and interesting, but theres A LOT so you do need to study EVERY DAY. Your only grades are 6 exams and the final. Being online made it more difficult because he made each question a minute and couldnt go back to the rest of questions.
Optional in-person lectures. Posts all recorded lectures online. 6 non-cumulative tests, 1 cumulative final. Haven't taken them all yet, but the five tests I have taken so far have been pretty tough. Can't revisit answered questions on the online tests for seemingly no reason. Professor himself has a serious demeanor, but he's actually pretty cool.
Only graded by 6 exams, no curves on exams or final grades. Average test grades are C's and D's. Don't take unless you are really good at memorization. This is harder than most biology courses you will ever take. Pick a different class because you rarely finish your exams in the time period and test questions are super confusing
Dr. Lantz is great, but this is the hardest class I've ever taken. His powerpoints are super long and filled with so much content. He'll ask you anything that's on the powerpoints. Exams are awful. If you're thinking about taking this class for fun or because it's recommended, don't do it unless you're really good at memorizing. study from day 1!
Dr. Lantz is a really good teacher. He talks pretty fast (a chapter a class). Also, his lectures are packed with information. Get ready to study new terms it's like a new language. Tests are HARD- fill in the blank no word bank, free response, matching, and multiple choice. But dr Lantz is so knowledgeable and happy to help GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Dr. Lantz is a pretty good professor. 343 is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but it is interesting. The only grades for this class is tests and quizzes. He makes these to prepare students for med school, so they seem almost impossible. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you are already in other hard classes (like orgo, biochem)
Dr. Lantz is a great professor, but this class is likely one of the hardest biology courses you will take at JMU. Get ready to study practically daily and DO NOT take this course with a 'heavy semester'. He is willing to help you if you go to his office hours and you also get some extra points for going to the lectures.
This was one of the most difficult classes I've taken at JMU, but it was so worth it. Dr. Lantz is a great professor and wants his students to succeed. He will help you! The material was interesting too. Grades were based off of tests and quizzes only. Textbook reading was not necessary. If you spend the time studying, it is possible to do well.
Someone must have hurt this man because he made his class incredibly hard. That being said, it is one of the most interesting classes I've taken and if you needed the help, he would be there to provide it. Tests are 100% based on lecture and the class requires constant studying. He's intimidating in class but pretty nice in my opinion.
participate in class, are present(physically and mentally) every class you will do well. START looking at the material earlier. study for the quizzes like exams! Do study groups to talk concepts out. **really understand the first few chapters REALLY REALLY well! The first few chapters are the foundation and the rest of the course!!
I LOVE Dr. Lantz. His class is very challenging and he seems a little intimidating at first, but he is one of my favorite professors at JMU. I truly learned a lot from him and wish he taught for classes so I could take him again!
This class is super difficult. The amount of work I spend on this course out of class is not comparable to any other class. My whole semester was focused on this one class. Dr Lantz is a nice professor, but his course takes up so much time out of class.
before he even covers a parasite you have to guess it yourself from a case study, read a chapter on it, memorize every detail, then take a test on it. Lantz himself is entertaining and a good teacher, but this class is TEDIOUS. The content is interesting enough, but the reading tests are really brutal with the tiny details. Exams are reasonable tho
Lantz is nice and this class is interesting, but there is so much reading and exams/quizzes. There is a group you are placed in at the beginning that you will work with throughout the semester and you do peer evals at the end that are kinda rigged. You HAVE to give someone a low score and someone a high score, even if everyone is doing good/bad.
All memorization, really hard to know what's important and not when doing the readings. Peer evals for your group at the end are insane, gotta give someone a high score and someone a low score for a grade raise or drop. Sucks if everyone in your group is generally good or bad in class. Better hope you end up with people who actually deserve it...
Dr. Lantz is extremely professional and knows how to prepare a class that most students will be generally successful in. Medical parasitology overall is a lot of memorization. You are required to know two chapters of new material inside and out for almost every class. The class is also team-based which is a toss-up. It's not impossible though!
Very difficult class but interesting. You have to attend every lecture. Exams are based on lectures and to do well you basically have to memorize the slides. Exams get easier as the course progresses, but if you do badly on the first couple it's hard to bring your grade up. Recommend if you're willing to put in the work. Dr. Lantz is scary but nice
immunology is a really tedious but awesome class. Lantz is nutty, but very effective at teaching. no textbook necessary if you take good notes in class. 3 exams, a final, and a few quizzes; he is willing to curve anything where the average was low. very classic lecture setup, no extra outside assignments - go to class, study your ass off, take exam
This was the best class I have taken and Dr. Lantz is awesome! There are 3 exams and a final plus pretty much weekly quizzes that cover the readings for class. You work with a team throughout the semester, but there really isn't a lot of team work beyond the team quizzes. Lectures can be a bit dry, but the content is super interesting!
Great professor, very personable and kind. Clearly cares about students and the subjects he's teaching. Medical Parasitology is incredibly interesting, just be prepared to do a lot of reading and being responsible for your own learning as you need to come to class prepared as he gives quizzes before giving summaries in lecture. Recommend highly!
Dr lantz is great but the class is really hard, definitely a lot of memorization and studying required
Dr. Lanz is a really nice professor, and he explains topics very well. I will say that if you're a biology student that has not taken immunology classes or anatomy, you will have to work harder understanding the pathology behind different infections.
This class was pretty difficult because he expects you know come to class prepared and be ready to be called on. Its more group based learning and the downside to that is that you have to rate one of your members badly. His lectures are great and he explains everything pretty well. His office hours are really helpful.
I really enjoy taking this class and felt like I learned a lot. There's 4 exams and 4 quizzes throughout the semester and a final. Everything on the slides are up for game on exams/quizzes. He wants your to succeed, but you have to put in the effort. Overall, one of my favorite classes at JMU.
Dr. Lantz is a really good professor. This class is HARD though, so if you are looking for an easy bio elective, this is not it. Grades are based only on tests and quizzes, not sure how hard the final will be since I haven't taken it yet, but the exams/quizzes require extensive studying to do well.
This class was very interesting but very difficult. A LOT of reading constantly, like reading on top of reading needed for a quiz. The tests are more general than the quizzes but if you don't have everything memorized, you're screwed. Super memorization is heavy. Dr. Lantz is chill but you basically teach yourself.
Worst professor I've had at JMU. Was recommended to withdraw from the course when I had a B in the class. His personality is blunt and cold, making him unapproachable. The group dynamic hangs over your head knowing what the end of the semester holds, so the classroom is rigid. The content is interesting, but don't take this class if you don't have to.
Parasitology is probably the most interesting class I have taken at JMU. Exams and quizzes are somewhat difficult but are a direct reflection of your reading comprehension. Only take this class if you are willing to read and annotate dozens of papers. Dr. Lantz isn't the greatest lecturer but the lectures are a very small percent of exams.
Professor Lantz's BIO343 class is challenging but rewarding. Attending lectures and actively engaging with the material is crucial. While textbooks aren't required, study tools like Unstuck ai can be very helpful for exam prep. Put in the effort, and you'll learn a lot in this class.
Dr. Lantz is amazing!! His lectures give you everything you need to succeed, I didn't buy the textbook and I have still aced every exam so far (no hw just exams & quizzes). He provides extra notes during class that aren't posted on canvas, so try not to miss class bc it will be on exams. There is a LOT of content for immunology so don't get behind
Dr. Lantz is one of the best professors at JMU. He really wants you to do well, and though the class work is dauting, he's usually there and available to help! You will need to do some reading and being caught up is crucial, as the coursework is a lot. It's a super interesting (and challenging) subject and Dr. Lantz is very passionate about it!
Was extremely rude. Makes exams incredibly difficult for no reason. Don't take this bio elective if you don't have to.
Dr. Lantz is leaving this year so this is a little pointless, but I've loved parasitology! I really wish I could take it again :) This class was hard, but it was also extremely rewarding. Dr. Lantz is an absolute character in the best way and I hope he has fun in retirement.
I really liked this class, even though it was extremely hard. Grades are based only on quizzes and exams, but does throw in some extra points for attendance. Everything is in the powerpoints which he goes over in class (I never even read the textbook). He can be a little intimidating at times, but you can tell he's really passionate!!
