a good teacher
A guy who really loves astro. There are weekly quizzes which can be tricky, and mid-terms are essay based but you'll be fine if you read
Very passionate about astronomy, and very helpful in writing assignments. I enjoyed his class.
A wonderful teacher. Really cared if the students learned or not. Even learned all the students names to make the classroom feel more personal. He was really cool and the class is easy if you get all your work done.
I thought he was a wonderful teacher. Really cared if the students learned or not. Even learned all the students names to make the classroom feel more personal. He was really cool and the class is easy if you get all your work done.
This professor will change your view of astronomy. Before I had no interest in astronomy, but his passion for the subject and the fascinating way in which he teaches makes it so interesting! You should take any changce you can to take a class from him!
Awesome teacher--one of the best professors I've ever had. He really makes the effort. He is an excellent teacher and mentor!
Seriously, a great professor. Genuinely cares about the students and while the class is a lot of work, stay on top of the reading and you should do fine. Highly recommend this prof!
Chris is a great teacher and VERY passionate about astronomy. The class is pretty challenging because of weekly quizzes that are pretty tricky and essay tests. There are only two tests but you have to write two essays and do multiple choice! I was very time crunched even after studying all week!! But the readings help a lot.
Chris himself was awsome, and so were all the TAs, very helpful. The only problem with his class is it was HARD! 10 quizes, weekly, 2 dropped, quizzes were VERY difficult, even if you read sometimes you fail. You have to keep up. 2exams, gives 8essays and on day of exam picks 2 along with some multiple choice. A LOT of work for an elective.
Prof. Laws is amazing and funny. His class is difficult but you are making your money's worth in college. You learn lots of useful stuff. Weekly quiz are difficult. You have to pay close attention to lectures and textbook readings. You have to work hard in this class but Prof. Laws is just absolutely amazing. He is the BEST!!!
Chris is the best professor I've had so far at the U. He is funny and lecture flies by. I learned an incredible amount in this class. Your TA is important, if possible get Daryl Haggard. Do the readings and pay attention in lecture on quiz days and you will do great. Definitely recommend taking this class with Chris!
The class as a whole was very interesting, and it was obvious how passionate Professor Laws is about astronomy. The weekly quizzes makes sure that you keep up with the reading, and the weekly astronomy readings are an easy way to wrack up credit. Overall, it was definitely a good class as long as you kept on track of your work!
Best professor ever. Makes astronomy cool. Mike Solontoi is also another good TA.
I took Astronomy 101 with this professor and it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. He makes the topic fun and interesting. This is the only class where I've been able to continuously pay attention during lecture, and for that reason I never opened the book. He's also a great guy outside of class, so if you get the chance, go talk to him!
This guy is such an amazing professor. The class is so much work, but no one will try harder to make English interesting that Dr. Laws. He is so enthusiastic and he is such a great guy, if you go talk to him at office hours it is like you are talking to a friend. Class is a ton of work, but I'd say its worth it to have Laws as a professor.
This guy was awesome. He brought energy to class each day and was very understanding when it came to assignments and turning things in. I won't forget the time he walked with me from class to the UW libraries for my first time to help me get a book. This guy rocks and I loved him as an English teacher and could tell his passion for astronomy.
best professor i've had. i had him for the writing link with astronomy. i hated the astronomy professor and wish he was teaching both. i probably learned more about astronomy from him than from prof larson. very passionate and engaging teacher. i highly recommend the writing link. the writing is hard but he is extremely helpful
Im a biology major and this has been my favorite class at UW so far because of Chris. He brings a high level of energy to class every day and keeps you interested. He gets to know you personally and has a clear understanding of your life outside of class by the time its over. Definitely take a small class with him if possible
One of the BEST professors I have ever had. He challenges you but gives you plenty of resources and opportunities to succeed in the class. Highly recommended. He is a great professor but also an awesome person!!
It is obvious from the first day of lecture that Professor Laws is extremely passionate about astronomy and wants us to succeed in his class. The class is challenging and not an easy 4.0, but it is interesting and Prof. Laws provides you with a lot of resources and gives a lot of opportunities to get extra help. Def. take a class with him.
He brings an amazing passion and energy to the class. He obviously loves the subject and he makes every lecture exciting. He also made tons of time for help when we needed it. Although it wasn't easy to get a 4.0 he made sure it was possible if you made the effort. He is a great professor. I definitely recommend any class he teaches.
This guy's a boss. He brings an unbelievable passion to class every day. He's probably the coolest teacher I've ever had. He's extremely helpful and very willing to work with you to help you succeed. His paper's are sometimes a little hard but that's the only possible downer to his class that I can think of.
This man is the best professor I've had thus far. He is amazingly helpful and will go to great lengths to make sure that you get the help you need. He truly wants you to succeed, and it shows. He has high expectations but is still a fair grader. It's a shame I had him so early in my college career, because other professors pale in comparison.
The best professor at UW. He cares so much about his students. He understands that students have a huge workload from other classes, so he always extensions on due dates to accommodate to your needs. Best professor ever.
He made the class enjoyable and fun! Always available for help. One of the best professors I ever had!
Great professor.Really engaging even if you don't find the material that interesting. Really tries to help students succeed and spends a lot of his own time so that he can be available. Love this guy.
Dr. Laws is very enthusiastic and loves to teach. He expects a lot of work, but also rewards students who put effort into each assignment. He also makes it a goal of his to get to know each one of his students, remaining flexible with schedule conflicts. If you show up for class and work hard you'll do well. He's a great professor!
He is the best professor I've ever had at UW. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him DO IT! He is so passionate about astronomy and he clearly loves teaching. You can only do poorly if you don't attend lecture/quiz section or just don't pay attention. It is, however, a lot of work, so be prepared! But it's all worth it.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD AT UW. Honestly, he is incredibly enthusiastic about astronomy and wants you to learn as much as possible, he even invites everyone to astronomy trips to eastern washington to look through telescopes and such. Quiz and news reading every week. Not hard at all if you go to class and read a bit. Hes really funny too :D
Chris is an extremely intelligent, fantastic, energetic professor who really loves what he does. He's one of the most caring, entertaining professors there is. However, do not expect an easy 4.0. The class is difficult to get a good grade in even if you work hard. However, the material is extremely interesting. Lots of reading though.
DOC LAWS IS A BOSS. take this class, it's not the easiest class but he'll make you want to work hard for your grade. Amazing guy, amazing lecturer. No complaints. Worked my ass off and didn't get a 4.0 but to this day (a year & a half later) I still tell everyone he was the best professor i've had.
He's very cool and generous, and will make you love astronomy.
Oh man, he's one of the best in UW.
Absolutely best professor i've ever met. He's always enthusiastic about teaching and astronomy. He cares about every student too. And i'm so impressed that on the first day of class, he can name every one of 20 students in my class. He cares more about the efforts u put in than the quality.
Chris Laws was one of the worst teachers I have had to date. He goes on tangents while discussing in class and even though it is intro to astronomy based, he takes things way over beginners' heads. He is also very vague with paper reviews - Spent an entire one-on-one with him telling me my paper was awful without any real structural advice.
Chris is definitely one of the nicest teachers I've had and you can definitely tell that he wants his students to succeed. With that being said, his one-on-one conferences are very helpful but they get dragged on to the point where you aren't even listening anymore. But overall, he was great and very enthusiastic.
He really cares about the students' education. He makes you go in for one-on-ones and I found those to be very helpful. He's always willing to help you out if you are willing to reach out for help. He is enthusiastic about his job, which is nice. He loves astronomy and English. An amazing teacher. Dedicated yet thoughtful and caring.
Professor Laws was so personable and easy to talk to about assignments. Initially I was nervous about taking this class but I'm so glad I did! He's clear about what's expected of students and really encourages students to do their best. A great professor!
He gives his best both in class and in office hours. He really wants every student to succeed, whether they are lagging behind or doing great. One of the best I've ever had.
Very nice professor, and helped me a lot with writing stuff.
Let's be real. Dr. Laws is a cool guy and definitely knows his stuff. But honestly, this class was stupid hard for being a 101 class. One quiz is worth 4% of your entire grade and there is one every week so if you mess up one you're basically screwed. So godspeed and good luck if you take this class. you're gonna need it. NOT AN EASY 4.0!!
Chris is one of the most enthusiastic professors I have ever had. He loves what he teaches, and unlike most professors teaching a class of 200+, he really cares if you learn. He wants to share his excitement of astronomy with you, which is awesome. The weekly quizzes are NOT EASY. I repeat NOT EASY. Those recked my grade.
Was connected with ASTRO 150& helped explain astronomy concepts. Wrote 4 papers the whole quarter& had no testsquizzes. Responds quickly to emails. He learns everyone's name in a couple weeks, he cares about his students. He doesn't care about grades, he wants you to become a better writer. He brought snacks for the class. Easy A.
Hes a great professor. Hes very enthusiastic. I took his class for a freshman seminar which was supposed to be very easy. I'm now looking for other classes I can take with him because he was so great!
This guy is a wonderful mentor that loves what he teaches.
Even after 3 years of being at UW, I've decided that Chris is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. Even if you don't take his class, it's worth sitting in on just to witness him present the universe in a way that you didn't expect. That being said, the course is difficult. Definitely not an easy 4.0.
350 characters is not nearly enough to describe what a great professor Chris is. Fantastic lectures, incredibly reasonable work load, and just an all around great teacher. His ability to break down complex concepts and explain them simply is unparalleled. Take his class. Any class of his you can find.
Chris is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had, and my favorite so far at the UW. Not only is the subject interesting, but he is extremely enthusiastic about it. He is the most encouraging, helpful teacher I've had, he really believes that anyone can be involved in astronomy if they want to be. Also knew everyone's name first day of class!
He's probably the best teacher I've ever had. His enthusiasm is through the roof and he genuinely enjoys his job and working with students. He grades on effort, so whether you're a really good writer or really bad your grade will depend on whether or not you actually tried. Fantastic professor, can't recommend him enough
Chris Laws is by far the best professor I have at this university. He is funny memorable, and very dedicated to his students. The class is not an easy A, there is a weekly quiz which you need to prepare for, but if you do well on the quizzes then you can avoid taking the midterm and final. Laws is willing to help any time, day, or for any reason
Took this special topics course for writing in astronomy. Laws is by far the best astronomy prof in the department, and there's no question why he's received 2015's Distinguished prof of the Year award. He is inspirational, an great lecturer, cares deeply about his students and their success.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. You will have to work a decent amount but it's interesting and helpful.
ASTR 301 with Chris Laws was by far the best off-major course I have ever taken. He has ways of explaining the material that just clicks, especially when it involves mindblowing concepts such as black holes. There are weekly quizzes and he requires a huge amount of detail, but if you pay attention and study accordingly you are certain to excel.
Seriously one of the best, if not THE best, professor I've had at UW. He genuinely cares about the subject and your success in his class. Lectures never felt like they were dragging on and I always looked forward to them. If you are an astronomy major, just interested about space, or need a NW credit, take his classes. You will not regret it.
Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had at UW. He cares about student success and its evident. He leads weekly CLUE sessions on his own time to prepare students for his weekly in class quizzes and during his lectures you can tell how much he loves this subject. This class is a must take if you need a NW credit! Easy A with a little work.
Professor Laws is an amazing professor, for an Astronomy 101 class he covers lots of material and tries to make sure that his students is able to understand them as much as possible. However, if you're looking for a class that is an easy A, this class is not it; there are weekly quizzes drawn from the reading along with other homework.
PROF LAWS IS THE BEST!!!!! HE REMEMBERS ALL OF YOUR NAMES LITERALLY IN LECTURE. HOWEVER WEEKLY QUIZZES CAN BE A PAIN!! GET A GOOD TA AND WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE. YOUR QUIZ IS ALMOST EQUIVALENT TO YOUR GRADE. NOT AN EASY 4.0 AND LAWS WILL MAKE YOU WORK WORK WORK FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!
Chris definitely cares about his students actually learning. He learns everyone's names by the first day of lecture, is always available to meet, holds review sessions, and answers emails quickly. There are quizzes based on a fair amount of reading every week, but you can sub your quiz grades for your midterm and final grades if you want!
He is dope.
Truly cares about his students. He will make you work hard for a good grade. This means keeping up with the readings and really asking questions if you have any. He will know everyone names and he will be very enthusiastic in class with lots of jokes. Dont take bc you think a 101 class will be easy. He will push his students and is well respected.
Fantastic Professor. Humor, ability, intelligence, he's got it all. Captivates you with his lectures and leaves you pondering many things at the end. Quizzes are a bit tough, as are exams, but if you do the reading you should be fine. Also brought cookies to the final and tells great jokes. Best professor I've ever had, 10/10 would take again.
Chris Laws is an awesome astro teacher. He has such a passion for the subject and it shows through in lecture. There is a quiz every week, so do the reading, but the midterm and final are optional. Not an easy 4.0 but definitely doable if you do the reading/go to lecture.
He's a great person who genuinely cares about his students. However, he is a very tough grader. I've had my fair share of essays, and he is extremely picky about how you explain the topic at hand. He makes you work for your grade. But I feel like I've learned lots of helpful writing tips from him. Overall, this is NOT an easy 4.0 class
Chris is the best professor I've ever met in UW. His passion to teaching made me love this English course, which should have been boring and tedious. He said this is only a class, I want to see how hard you push yourself to do "experiments" on your paper. If you really like this course and make efforts, you won't get a disappointing grade!
GREAT CLASS TO TAKE! DEFINITELY PUSHES YOU TO YOUR LIMITS, 3 PAPERS DURING THE WHOLE QUARTER BUT 3 DRAFTS OF EACH PAPER, FAIRLY EASY IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT. LAWS MAKES THE CLASS EXCITING AND BRINGS SNACKS TO CLASS. NOT A HARD GRADED CLASS.
He is the BEST PROFESSOR I've ever had in my LIFE! He is so caring and enthusiastic about his students and classes. I had two of his classes for fall quarter, and the experience was absolutely AMAZING! He remember EVERYONE's name! Honestly, If he can teach every single one of my class, school would be HEAVEN!
He is simply amazing! his lecture is awesome, mind-blowing every lecture! hes very passionate about this class and very caring to students. It's very easy to pay attention his class just because its so interesting!
Not the easiest class. I honestly think his standards are really high. This class was supposed to be for reshman class, but he expects you to write like how expert writers would. DEFINITELY a LOT of homework, and A LOT OF reading. hated it.
You didn't have to take the midterm or final if you were happy with your quiz grades. He remembers all his students names even after the class ends. Favorite prof at UW.
If I can I would marry this adorable old guy. He is the funniest professor ever.I took his astronomy 101 and it was not hard to get a good grade if you try and not procrastinate. He gave us weekly quizzes and all exams are optional. He is very helpful to all students. MOST IMPORTANT: He remembers all his students' name in the lecture. Literarily!
Prof. Laws had memorized everyones names before class even started, so as we walked into our first class of freshman year, we were warmly greeted with our names, which really meant a lot. If you put in work and participate in class, you'll get a good grade. Very inspirational and so far my favorite professor!
I'm graduating with CS this quarter but Chris' ASTR 101 has made me regret not majoring in Astronomy. He is THE best lecturer I have ever had up to this point, without a doubt. Knows everyone's name in a 300-student size class, which says a great deal. If you are at UW, you have gotta try one of his classes.
Dr. Laws is the best lecturer I have ever had. He REALLY cares about his students and will go to any length to help you learn the material. I'm an astro major so expected this to be easy, but I still spent up to 4 hours a week reading to prepare for the quiz. Not an easy A if you don't like reading about Astronomy, but is worth it and is super fun.
Chris is an incredible teacher. He learned the names of every student in my course and says hello when he sees you outside of class. He makes it easy to enjoy astronomy as much as he did, and that's coming from someone who, before this class, couldn't care less.
Professor Laws is one of the best instructors so far. He makes learning the topic very fun throughout his lectures and answers any questions you have. He's also really straightforward about what you'll be tested on, and even gives you the mid-term and final questions pretty early on in the course. Labs are also graded by effort so don't stress out.
I love Chris. It is so great to have him be my first teacher at UW. He tries and can remember most of everyone's name. He is always inspirational and sometimes romantic, which makes me so happy and unwilling to miss any of his lecture. Go Chris!!!
I love him! Chris always gives the most inspiring lectures and I actually look forwards to attending his lectures. We have a quiz every week which is not bad since we can skip the final and the midterm if we do good on the quizes. Overall hes great and I would definitely recommend!
I took this class in my first quarter of freshman year and it was the best class I've ever taken. Chris is caring and amazing. The lectures are not at all boring and if you do good on the weekly quizzes you don't even have to take the midterm and the finals!
Do not take Laws' 101 class if you're looking for an easy 4.0. Laws himself is an incredibly good lecturer and the material is fascinating. However, you are graded harshly on weekly quizzes that are the majority of your grade. You have to remember every tiny detail from every lecture to even come close to getting 100% on quizzes. Take Astr 150.
Amazing professor! He really cares about his students. He uses a free textbook so we don't have to pay and he supplies the blue books for the exams. Plus the midterm and final are optional! It's an easy class but not an easy A. Be prepared to study for weekly quizzes! The 3 labs were easy but had hard questions. Don't start those the night before!
Really interesting class with a caring and passionate professor, would highly recommend.
Chris is a great teacher! Lectures are not mandatory, but are great! I managed to get a 4.0 without doing the reading and just studying the lectures the night before the quizzes (I attended each lecture). First 5 quizzes can add up to your mid term score, and last 5 quizzes equal your score on the final (optional, but easier than taking exam.
Great teacher, I wish hed teach all of my classes. Id highly recommend him, he is one of the better teachers at UW.
No participation in class thats tracked, quizzes are kinda specific so you need to go to class to get whats on them-half of its not in the readings (those really arent necessary either), midterm/final both optional, going to discussion section gives you good points for minimal effort, go to review sessions for quiz questions
I am taking Chris' ASTR101. I have to say that this is the best professor I've ever met. 1. He CAN remember everyone's name in a 300 people class. 2. Optional Midterm and Final 3. No need for buying textbook Those 3 reasons are definitely enough for a 5 star professor lol
Chris gives some of the most amazing lectures. He is funny, inspirational, and charismatic. He makes it clear what needs to be known to succeed in the class. He really knows his stuff and comes to class everyday ready to teach and answer questions. The enthusiasm he presented everyday motivated me to do better in the class.
Chris is clearly super excited to be doing what he does, and that creates a positive effect on the learning environment in both lectures and section (visited occasionally). This class isn't a super easy 4.0, but it's not difficult if you study at least 2-3 hours before each quiz. I started trying harder in the 2nd half of class & got myself a 3.8.
Chris is a very nice professor, but this class (at least for me) was hard and a lot of work that I did not expect. There are weekly quizzes that are tough and to do well you really need to do the multiple chapter readings. He said the avg. score is only 83%. Interesting stuff, but hard to get an A in.
Dr. Laws is an amazing professor who really cares about his students and the course he teaches. His excitement and love for astronomy are contagious! The course itself is also extremely interesting and his lectures help explain everything that will be on the test and really help to clarify the readings. Highly recommend!
Amazing professor, class consisted of weekly quizes (friday's) and midterm & final were optional! He mentioned the average grade was an 83% however I had an incredibly difficult time even reaching above a 75%. He is one of the few professors that is actually interested in what he's teaching, also remembered all 200 of his students name, impressive
Dr. Chris Laws has been the greatest thing since sliced bread. His lectures are so good and interesting that I wanted to come to class even if it was at 10:30, which is still bedtime. Gives weekly quizzes and material is pretty interesting. He told us about aliens and supermassive black holes. 10/10 would recommend.
Absolutely enjoyed taking classes with Chris. He is great at lecturing, the content is super interesting, and he makes it clear what we need to know and what we don't for the weekly quizzes. One of those classes that I wish I can take again.
Professor Laws is hands down the best professor I've had at UW. He is always there for his students and he cares about our success. We didn't have exams or finals, we have papers to write but they're not hard. After each paper, you will have conferences with him and he is so understanding, means no class for weeks! No way you will fail.
MY GOD IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE ANYTHING WITH CHRIS LAWS, DO IT. This man is the sweetest, most caring prof I have ever had. He genuinely loves what he does and every student. I would die for him. As an avid anti-math and science student, I promise this is a 4.0 for anybody willing to do the work. REGISTER FOR THIS CLASS NOW!
Astr 101 is one of the best classes I have taken at UW. Professor Laws really cares about his students and you can tell he really loves what he is teaching. The lectures are interesting and informative, and the assignments are grading are fairly easy.
He's so Amazing! One of the best professors I have met at UW. Even though the pace is kinda fast(but not too much), he can really teach everything well and understandable. there are a lot of details, but connected and clear-cut. A very humorous man and an inspiring professor!
Dr. Laws is probably one of the nicest professors I've had. He loves astronomy and gets really excited teaching it. He's also very available to students when they need him. that being said, his quizzes do take work. You need to be specific and include all of the details to get a high score. It's hard to get a 100% in the class.
He's nice but it's really hard to get a good grade on weekly quizzes
Prof Laws is a very dedicated teacher who cares a lot about astronomy and his students. It's really nice having a prof who's so passionate about their subject. My only complaint is that there was SO much more work and really tough grading than I expected for a 101 class. Don't take if you just want a fun, easy intro to astronomy.
Chris Laws is such a good lecturer and just a really good person. His lectures are very clear and you can tell the passion he has for astronomy. This class does take a decent amount of time and work but the clarity of all the instructions and the clear expectations make it a very enjoyable class.
Chris' exuberance is contagious! Lectures are full of information but fun. Personable and profession, a fabulous teacher! Quizzes are hard-even after watching the lectures multiple times. Grading varies as it is done by TAs and grading team. Canvas is the best organized I have seen and very clear expectations. Book is free-lectures are everything
Without a doubt, the absolute finest professor/person I have ever even heard of, much less met. The class itself is not difficult, but they're also not going to hand you an A. Do some light reading, watch the lectures, and do the relatively few/easy assignments they have and you'll get an A.
Chris is by far my favorite professor at UW! He provides the textbook for free and while you do read a lot, his lectures are so energetic they feel more like discussions. Grades were based on weekly assignments, with an optional final exam. While Covid probably altered the class, his character truly defined it. Best connection I've made!
Most incredible professor I've ever had. Such a vibrant passion for teaching that cannot be matched! Quizzes are reasonable, but honestly quite interesting even when they get difficult. Chris is very accommodating and flexible, and cares about educating students rather than passing out grades. TAKE A CLASS WITH CHRIS BEFORE YOU GRADUATE
Prof. Laws is amazing. His philosophy of weekly quizzes versus a cumulative final was so great and I think it helped me retain more material in the long run anyway. There are weekly quizzes on Fridays and homework assignments, along with one or two lab projects which are easy. I definitely hope to take another class with him if he offers it.
I absolutely loved taking Astronomy 101 with Professor Laws. Especially during the pandemic, he made the classes fun and I always looked forward to them. He is my favorite professor at The University of Washington so far! If you have the chance to take a class taught by him - do it.
absolutely amazing professor. they always come to class super energetic and you can tell he loves talking about astronomy. he is also super understanding with anything assignment related. there might be a little more assignments, but there is no midterm or final so i think that its worth it. PLS take any class you can with chris you wont regret!!
AMAZING!!! REGISTER THE CLASS NOW!!!!
Chris is the best professor anyone could ever ask for. He is the most romantic and heart-warming human being on the planet. He cares about students a lot, keeps telling us that he is here to help. I love that he always put on a suit and tie even though it's a remote class. He is super enthusiastic about what he does. And he has the coolest TA ever!
It's clear he loves teaching the class, and his enthusiasm is shared by TAs and students alike. This is a class you don't want to miss regardless of your major. Reading the textbook helped with the weekly homework and the lectures answered the weekly quizzes. 95 is a 4.0 like most non-STEM intro classes.
i took astro to get my QSR credits over with... i am SO not a STEM person and wasn't remotely interested in astronomy. laws and his truly awesome TAs made me not hate the class. lectures were funny and engaging because laws is genuinely passionate about astronomy and it's kind of contagious. shows a good professor makes all the difference.
I took this class because I was curious of astrophysics and honestly, at first it was pretty stressful. It is a lot of material, but the lectures and the quiz sections made the quizzes a lot easier. The professor is genuinely caring. He wants you to succeed. He will forever be my favorite professor.
No finals or mid terms, just weekly quizzes.
I really enjoyed this class! Chris is very charming and he's very passionate about the subjects he's teaching. Attendances for lectures are not mandatory. For quiz sections, you will be graded based on participation. There are weekly quizzes and no final. The quizzes are not very hard as long as you pay attention in class and go through the ppts.
Very nice man! The class was amazing. The content is not very easy for astr beginners like me (just took it for fun). But all the instructors are very accessible.
Chris is such an incredible lecturer - he is so funny, so caring for his students, and always has something nice to say. His class is really well-organized and you can tell he puts a lot of thought into which TAs he chooses. I highly recommend going to office hours just to talk to him because he has so much knowledge to share!
Prof Laws is so caring and passionate and makes an effort to know as many student names as he can, despite there being hundreds of students. He is such an authentic person who wishes the best for his students, and the TA's are very helpful in reviewing for quizzes. NO MIDTERM NO FINAL! weekly quizzes that are easy as long as you attend class.
Dr. Laws' class was so great. It wasn't too hard and I was always excited to go to class. He's from the south so when he lectures he straight up sounds like a really passionate southern preacher, but preaching about love and acceptance and the Universe. One of my favorite classes + teachers I've had so far at UW.
I love them!! He is passionate about the field and that is apparent in his interesting, engaging, fun lectures. He cares a lot about his students and does everything he can to accommodate to us. I would recommend this class to everyone I know, it is only graded on 10 quizzes; there is no final! My only complaint is the TAs are tough graders.
Every week have a quiz. The answer will in the lecture and ppt. Almost every month have an opportunity to get extra credit.
I love Chris. Make sure you keep up with lectures if you want to do well on the weekly quizzes, and the quiz sections are very necessary. The quizzes are harder than you think they would be. The lectures are at times hard to follow so be sure to ask questions. It's not too hard but it's also def not a blow-off class.
I'm so glad I decided to take Dr. Laws's class. Astro101 is the best class I've taken, perhaps ever! Not only does he present the facts very clearly and concisely, he also finds ways to incorporate philosophical insights into each of the topics. His lectures are the highlights of my week. The Astro101 TAs are also amazing at answering questions.
He clearly has experience teaching and clearly knows what he's talking about. He has a great team of TAs and the grading of quizzes are fair and generous. This class starts out easy but the concepts start to become more challenging and his lectures helped me understand them a lot easier. Would love to work for him in research some day.
Chris Laws is a fantastic professor. His lectures are entertaining yet informative and the material was diverse and detailed. There are no midterms or final, only weekly quizzes. The quizzes however, can be challenging but if you are engaged and attend the lectures, that's all you need to succeed in this class.
Laws is awesome. He's super funny, energetic, and entertaining. The class is more work than your typical intro class, and you gotta study a good amount. That said, both Chris and the TAs provide many resources and are very accessible, and they're genuinely chill and awesome people. Heck, Chris is the kinda guy I just wanna go fly fishing with.
Amazing professor. Very passionate about astronomy, could not have asked for a better professor in this class. Super energetic and engaging in lectures and wanted to go to class because of that. Super lenient grading criteria too, its not hard to do well in this class
Professor is absolutely amazing. He loves astronomy and his students very much. Very encouraging and ensures that every student does well in his class. There are weekly quizzes, lectures are recorded and uploaded right after class, review questions are available on canvas, and TAs are available for help. Don't slack off, the class is fast paced.
Easy and simple but no extra credits and if you slip up in one of the 2 exams, then you can't save your grade. No extra credits and only selected HW assignments
Great professor. He remembers every student by name. Very friendly and approachable. He often goes on tangents, but they kind of feel like a good break from complicated subjects. He was also very accomodating. My only complaint is that he often assigned a lot of reading. One week had 200 pages assigned. Just prioritize the lecture content.
Amazing lecturer, easy class. Take it
He was absolutely amazing
Best professor at this school
Easily one of the best professors at UW, gives great life advice, learns your name which no other professor has done, incredible lecturer, created an interest in astronomy for which i particulary had no interest, super approachable, understanding, can fall behind if you don't pay attention, but this is hard to do because of how good lectures are
Chris Laws was hands down the best professor I've had at UW. He is engaging, passionate, and super funny. It's super impressive and feels good as a student that he knows every single person's name in his lecture!
By far the funniest, coolest, most caring professor I've had at UW. Concepts were well-explained and had me genuinely engaged and interested in astronomy. You WILL have to study for weekly in-person quizzes, but it's worth it. Lectures are recorded, but you won't want to skip anyway; he had us clapping and tearing up some days. SHOUTOUT CHRIS
Very passionate teacher. There are weekly discussions which you need to make 1 post, 2 replies, and a weekly quiz and you write very freely for the posts. Very easy class for 5 credit.
literally my goat i shed a few tears in this class not even kidding
"A nanosecond's a long f*cking time!" said while crouching on top of a desk, was my first introduction to Dr. Laws. He's awesome, super caring (the first professor I've ever had at UW who actually bothered to learn people's names before class started), and makes something already fascinating like astronomy genuinely entertaining to learn about.
