passionate about history, makes you want to care about politics
yeah he's biased--toward the truth.
He rocks. How can he be a 60s guy under 40?

his class is really interesting and never boring. lots of fun.
Magoc has interesting points but his grading standards are very unclear. He says that things are awkward but does not tell how to improve them. His workload for the class is outrageous for a hundred level course and the t/f mult. choice are ridiculous.

Don't buy into the lie the first day on saying you will get out early, He will keep you late everyday, Workload is ridiculous, books were unintresting and you will spend in arm and leg for them and only get five bucks back, a waste of time and money
not particularly enjoyable

Definatly a cool teacher, understand the students and enjoys what hes doing. Lots of reading but theres enough challenge that peeks your interest. Keep with it.
Awesome teacher, really makes you think. Gives alot of work but its definitly worth it.
miserable
very good course
fine teacher
take him for at least one course
Passionate and interesting.
Excellent.
motivates and teaches...this guy gives you tons of work but it doesn't seem like that much because he makes you interested and you might not even realize it...everyone should have him at least once
he is the dude
awesome teacher who loves the subject. down to earth and can connect with students would vote for him for president
awesome
I hate history, HATE IT! but magoc made it so fun and relevant... he was really helpful and willing to go over anything needed... it was a super awesome class...specially when you would get him off track, like the day we spent the entire class talking about theories How and who killed JFK...awesome!
outstanding
good. fair
Great teacher!
The best professor I've had at Mercyhurst
Magoc Rocks!
Legend! great class, best ive had at mercyhurst!
superb...Magoc for president
very fair
Be prepared to work your a** off. Papers every week and a ton of reading. Brutal tests with lots of essays. I am a 3.8 student and had difficulty with his rambling lectures. Made it a little more interesting, but not enough to turn me into a PolySci major. Take another class if you can.
Very tough class. 1-2 page essays every week, tons of text reading, plus a 350 pg. paperback to read that's due mid-term along with 3 pg. paper, PLUS a 6 pg. term paper. His exams are lengthy and difficult too. Adult Students - beware! Working full-time and taking his class, especially if you take 2 per term, will be hard to manage.
A very good teacher.
Just having him for FYI last year convinced me to avoid any of his classes. He is in love with BS. He turned a one-credit, 4-week class into hell. The requirements of five papers, many journal entries, and pointless discussions are more than in some 3-credit classes I've taken!
intense!
8 page syllabus says it all. 6 papers due a term. Doesn't grade easily. But does give a study guide for each test. Tough. Be prepared to work.
hated this class probably because i just hate history in general. lots of papers to write. you never have to read the book because he lectures about it in every class. that's actually all he does..... LECTURE!!!!! it's so boring
I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer below. The lectures are great. And there's film, and music, and great stories you DON'T get in the book.
Yeah, you have to read. But welcome to college. I mean come on. If you think you can get away without reading the material, then you're in the wrong school. He knows his stuff and there a number of papers, but they can be really interesting and fun if you make them that way. Take him...he rocks!
Great teacher, knows his stuff.
VERRRRY BORING CLASS. Almost impossible to stay awake in the 1 hr class.More papers in just this class than all of my college writing classes (and probably both other terms) COMBINED.I thought I had a C+ easy and ended up with a D+ and he never returned the finals or papers so I have no clue what happened. If you want to be bored to death take him
eye-opening
This was probably one of the worst classes I have taken at this school so far. Every day I dreaded going to class. I wrote more papers in this class than I did in my English and CW classes. It'd be nice if he gave us some useful notes to study from as well. If you aren't too good with history to begin with, don't take this class.
I don't know what the rater below is talking about. One of the BEST classes I've ever had.

he rocks
I loved this class. You'll work hard but he's an excellent instructor.
Very interesting class, he is good at holding attention too...easy to listen to and take notes from ... although i do wish that i could just sit and take in what he says instead of haveing to write so many papers about it ..... good prof. though for sure!
The best history professor I've ever had! He's very interested in the subject matter. I took an extra elective class with him because I enjoyed the first one so much. US HIST III was one of the best courses I've ever had.
Awesome professor! He was one of the best professors I had while at Mercyhurst (I'm now graduated) and if you take his calss, epecially US History III, you will love it!
really knows his stuff, you can tell he loves his work. interesting to listen to and nice
Tree-hugging hippie and i loved him!!! He is an awesome teacher who is really passionate about what he is doing! Really knows his stuff and has had a lot of experience not just teaching but in the "real" history world! His classes are tough, yeah, but they are really interesting and totally worth it!!!
I love Dr. Magoc's classes. I have actually gone out of my way to take his classes. You have to work, but its totally worth it.
not that bad of a class..tons of reading that you really dont have to do, just go to lecture and he'll tell you everything you need to know for exams. hes a hard grader when it comes to papers and there are 3 smaller and 1 huge paper so be careful if they arent your strong point
world history III...one of THE BEST classes i have taken at mercyhurst...amazing teacher, knows his history, doesnt read off slides...lectures on and on cause he is so enthusiastic about it...i hate history but i love magoc...highly recommended class!!!
I absolutely hated this class, he was too hard to follow in class and the tests were impossible. I received a bad grade on my final paper because he thinks he knows everything about history and if you even try to introduce a new term to him, he will shut you down. Such a boring class, so glad its over.
One of the best classes I have had, in any subject. Great lectures. He makes a subject I have always hated interesting, worth coming to class.
Overall not that bad of a class, when you take history take Magoc, he's the easiest history teacher. To do well you need to be a pretty decent writer.
He's a cool dude knows what hes talking about. He can really be helpful, but hes sometimes a little unclear in his teaching style. Tests and papers are easy, just do what you gotta do and pay attention, dont really bother with the reading.
One of the best classes I had in my four years at Mercyhurst.
Passionate, knowledgeable, clear and organized. I hate history but loved this class. I know someone who has changed their major because of taking Magoc. Take him.
He can actually wake me up with American history at 8 o clock in the morning. Lectures are great, and a Vietnam book you need to read.
He is not for everybody--he lectures a lot. But he is interesting to listen to, passionate about his subject matter, and knows his stuff.
Magoc rocks the house. Never looks at his notes, knows his s--t. Several papers, and you need to be able to write well to do well. Exams are tough.
I love Dr. Magoc. He is one of the best professors I have ever had at Mercyhurst...And he is adorable!
He is amazing--energetic, clear, passionate, and very understanding. But you have to take good notes--attendance is not mandatory but if you're not there, you're lost.
He is a really nice guy... The material we learned was interesting, but the way he sets up his exams is pretty difficult. If you can get away without studying in most classes, don't think you can do the same for this class!! You may think you know the material from the lectures, but make sure you know the study guide! His tests are hard!!!
Tests are hard as hell, and you have to know how to write. But he knows his stuff and he's passionate about teaching. One of the best at this school.
Awesome class-Magoc is engaging and very well prepared for lecture everyday. The tests are somewhat difficult, but you can get by without studying if you take good notes.
No one is more passionate about his subject matter. Good stories to make history interesting for even someone like me that doesn't much care for the subject. HARD tests.
Chris Magoc was the worst teacher I have ever had. I was in his class about sustainability and it pushed a very strong political agenda. If you disagreed with him, your grade suffered. He was not intelligent in any way and backed up his arguments with no support. This was a class I was forced to take and I hate Mercyhurst for it.
That last reviewer must be talking about somebody else. The Magoc I had was one of the best teachers I hav had at Mercyhurst. Passionate, extremely knowledgeable about US history and helpful. Take him if ytou get the chance!
Koolest professor. real down to earth and definatley had acids trips back in the days.super smart and teaches you alot about the under dogs instead of wars and politcs. if you get a bad grade in his class its cause your a bum.the class aint easy though but he definately keeps yeah interested. learned alot, overall excellent professor
This guy is both a hard and great teacher. he won the teaching excellence award at the school last year--highest award to a professor. tells you all u need to know.
Great professor, knows what he is talking about and keeps the topics interesting.
hard tests, long lectures, really nice guy and tries to keep it interesting. he mostly succeeds, but there are days that the 8am classes just aren't interesting enough to stay awake.
Excellent professor, one of the best at Mercyhurst.
AMAZING prof. Very passionate about the material. Knows his stuff. Great lectures to keep students interested, very approachable and willing to help, allowed great discussions in class, taught with a focus on the people generally overlooked by history, and was just an amazing professor to have. Take good notes because the exams can be hard.
Very passionate about his lectures, tests are hard. Tough grader in papers and tests.
Magoc is a really great guy, just a tough teacher. Cannot blame him for any failure though.
Long boring lectures and stands on his soap box the whole time. Nice guy and very interesting. Tough grader, write paper topics on liberal things he would like.
Long lectures about things that aren't relevant to the course materials. Lots of reading but most you can get away without doing. I wouldn't recommend this class to first semester freshmen.
One of my favorite professors at Mercyhurst. He is incredibly intelligent and thoughtful with his lectures. He makes his classes entertaining even when the information itself can be dry. I don't find him to be a terribly tough grader, because if you take the time to study you will be perfectly fine. He also grades papers thoroughly.
Dr. Magoc is one of my favorite professors. He can be a tough grader, especially on papers, but its mostly because he's so enthusiastic about the subject he just wants to read more. But his lectures are great and he is one of the nicest, down to earth people outside of class (well in class too). Definitely recommend any of his classes!
This man is the reason I chose to come to Mercyhurst and I'm excited to spend the next four years in his classes. Highly recommend his classes. On the other hand, picky grader when it comes to essays but his caring nature makes up for it!
I have learned so much from this professor in my short time on campus! He is an overall great guy and is always teaching history in a way that is inspirational. On the other hand, he is a very tough grader with essays. But, Is definitely my favorite professor!
I really have enjoyed Dr. Magoc. He has so many interesting thoughts to share and really makes you care about the subject. While I really enjoyed the class, the way he grades is much too stressful. In this specific class, he only had a midterm, a final, a book report, and a Final Term Paper. This is all the he will for your grade. Otherwise great!
He is mean and extra tough on grading if you are not a history nerd. Gives petty comments on papers.
If you go to class, pay attention, and try to engage you will find out that he is a wonderful teacher! He keeps the material entertaining and adds fun videos and stories along the way. Main part of the work is papers, but he gives you the freedom to choose from a wide range of topics on what to write. Really good teacher, and an even better person.
Don't take him at all, only had 3 grades the entire semester. Got a bad grade on the midterm and had no extra work besides the final paper and exam. He did not have enough grades to do well in the class, very hard class would NEVER take his class again. I would never recommend this professor to anyone EVER.
Every class consisted of him pushing his political viewpoints, with little availability for participation, even though participation was graded. Professor showed hostility towards opposing viewpoints creating a somewhat hostile classroom. For the many required papers required make sure you write topics that suit his beliefs! Little use of BB too!
Dr. Magoc has been one of my most impactful professors at Mercyhurst. Even though I had him for a reach course, I absolutely enjoyed his lectures & the information that was taught still sticks with me till this day. He is tough grader when it comes to papers but he definitely is passionate so it's more of a positive criticism.
not a good professor, not good at explaining course material or showing importance of information.
The professor had a clear bias, making it hard to engage. But Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for paper topics and exam prep. Overall, a tough class - do the readings and use all available resources.
