Not a very good instructor. Very boring AND Very poor teaching skills.
you can know what this guys gonna say before he even says it. everything he says sounds rehersed because he teaches everything from the book. saves you much frustratoin. and he speaks to fast and really doens't no what hes talken about.
he is my best prof here. he's funny, and he doesnt teach out of the book, he makes the lectures interesting.
Class is seemingly easy .. but then the final screws you over. It's definitely the material, not the professor. He's nice and approachable, I just didn't spend much time on the course.
He was a good teacher. Everything he teaches is right out of the book and class was over early every day. There's a lot of information to remember for the tests but he helps you as much as he can.
pretty good
Sometimes class can be boring b/c the lectures are straight from the book - but atleast your getting your moneys worth from the book. He is a shy teacher but will put in more effort than any teacher to help you out. Just make sure you read the chapters and study hard for the exams!
Very poor instructor.
I loved him! He is very helpful, doesn't like failing...what else can you ask for? Although, sometimes he gets caught up in his own mind and starts speaking as though we were math geniuses. I kinda found him cute...he is a bit shy. But seriously, if you have trouble Psych Stats, he will try to get you to pass the course no matter what.
Excellent prof. I learned so much, more then any other course I've taken. He is well prepared, funny and kinda cute!
Not a good prof. Nice guy though, but man is he boring. It was so bas that I kept cutting class, but still got an A in the course.
Very good teacher, cares about the students and trys to help them out, doesn't like seeing low marks. If you go to the class you'll do fine, he points out the important info. Funny and cute, loved his class
he is a good prof at explaining stuff and he repeats himself which i like good guy pretty funny, a little hard exams kinda but i dont study or go to class much so it prob just me
No need to go to class, everything is in the book and he teaches directly from it. I am paying all this money to read a book!
Go to class and he gives you the answers to the test. He wants his students to do well, and the final assignment was a chapter summary. He addmited that as long as you try you get an 8/10. Overall he was a good proff, just go to class.
Not a horrible prof, teaches directly out of the book so you don't really need to go to class. He will give you at least a 13/15 on his assignment as long as you submit something, so that is good. It is odviouse that this guy is trying to get tenure. Regardless, a pretty easy class I got a B and did very little.
MAHAR IS THE****! he wants everyone to do wiked in his class, he asked a few "your opinion" questions and got you to write them down, he said that if he needed to give everyone extra points he would use those opinion questions. He knows what hes talking about, BUT you must go to class and pay attention, he gives out anwsers to the tests. VERY EASY
Very boring class, lectured right out of the text book. Easy if your into reading the entire book at home. Couldnt help but sleep through class.
He's a good prof, but pretty hard. You need to go to classes, especially for stats, but he trys hard to make sure you know the material and get a good mark
This guy's a solid gold prof. He kept the information interesting and easy to understand. If you wanta free good mark, just go to all the classes, and you're sure to ace the exams.
He is a great guy and a great prof. He wants his students to do well and will help anyone who needs it. He doesn't leave youw ith any surprises and he basically tells you if you are listening what is onthe exams. Take this guy any chance you get, he is great!
A lot of material to know in this course, especially if done in the summer...but Chris is definetly one of the best professors at SMU and makes this course as easy as it can be. He knows his stuff inside out and is always willing to help. And he gives out loads of hints for the exams!
Very approachable, very smart, well organized. He's great. Even scales the marks on a bell curve if really bad. Asks students what they liked and didn't like about the first test and then reformats the next test to make it better. If you do your readings, go to class, it's an easy A+. Go Chris Go!
gooood
Great prof! Very thorough and dictates notes :-) He sometimes goes really fast so you need to be able to take good notes-fast! Very explicit in what he wants you to learn..outlines 'example' questions he has asked before which 'may' show up on this test. Attendance not mandatory, but will save you reading your text!
Ridiculously easy class. Dictates all of his notes which makes the class go really slow and be really boring. Gives away exam answers during the term so go to the class and you're guaranteed an A+. Took Industrial Organizational Psyc Boorinng!
Chris is an awesome prof! One of the best I've had at SMU. He knows his stuff and teaches it well. He has a great sense of humor.. The class never gets boring. He explains exactly what is going to be on the exams , so there is never any surprises. Great prof! :)
I can't say I learned much as all that Mahar does is read his lecture notes to make sure you can copy them down verbatim. No intellectual stimualtion whatsoever and gives the most idiot-proof assignment I have ever written: summarizing a text book chapter without any usage of APA formatting. Look up bird course and 3327 will be used as an example.
I wouldn't recommend taking anyone else but Chris for this class! Stats is hard, but if you go to class and do the assignments before the tests you'll do fine. Chris is an excellent prof; he has a great sense of humor, is always willing and available to help, and his tests are fair. :)
I've had him for quite a few classes. He was an excellent stats prof. I am horrible at math and I made As on the exams. I didn't like him for some of the other classes because he just repeated what we needed to write down and I would get confused and my notes would get messy
Chris dictates the notes, which is boring. Save your time and just read the textbook. He also uses a test bank to get his questions, which causes everyone to get poor marks. Everyone ended up getting a good final mark b/c he had to bump up everyone?s mark. If he took time to write up tests that were relevant this class would be worth taking.
He keeps it simple man.
easy/boring class
Everything you need to know is included in his slides ESPECIALLY if he gives you his personal notes attached to them. I havnt read the text and I have a 94%. He has a great ability to put difficult concepts into laymans terms. Great guy, funny! Never missed a class.
Really good prof. Funny and good at explaining important concepts. Just make sure to go to all the classes and read up on notes in free time. If you do that you can easily get an A-or A+.
Nice guy and the class is more or less fun. Tests were hard but he bonus points made up for it. Great guy. I would take more courses with him.
awesome
seriously the best prof i've had at smu. I just took this course on a whim. if you go to class, he repeats things that are important 2-3 times so you have time to write it down, and if you go to the reviews before tests.. he tells you what's on them! awesome awesome prof. he's super chill too!!
I took memory and I/O psyc with Prof. Mahar. Very down to earth teacher. He does not try and trick you, he simply measures your understanding on the subject, no trickery. Attendance is not mandatory, but the notes that he provides on the power point slides are simple and very clear and for me, using his notes was the most useful way to learn!
Best and funniest prof ever. Helpful with his repeatedness. Had him for Memory and have him again this semester for stats, looking forward to it!! His sense of humor helps make class less stressful
Loved him! Great prof. Slides are super clear. He definitely made stats manageable.
Great prof! explains everything more than once to ensure that everyone has a good understanding. pretty much tells you what is on the exam, and very helpful!
Great prof! Very helpful and flexible with due dates for assignments! Must attend class in order to well on the midterms, assignments and final. Also, his review classes are great - let's you know exactly what is going to be on the tests!
A great professor. Very hilarious, and approachable. The textbook is not necessary, but take notes of everything he says in class! He repeats notes numerous times which helps a lot. Such a funny guy, and an interesting class too.
Worst professor I've had at Saint Mary's. Very Lazy. Does not post notes online or even in the class room. He just stands there and reads to you!! I asked him several times to bring my tests to class so I could see where I went wrong which he did not do. He didn't even have office hours. I received a C+ in his class. Never got below a B+ before!
Great professor! Uses real life examples that stick and are easy to remember when it comes to tests - 3 tests were given, all which consisted of multiple choice and a bonus/optional short answer. I bought the textbook and didn't crack it once, his lectures and slides are extremely clear and cover the important aspects
I didn't finish this term, so I have to redo this course, and I'll WAIT for Chris to teach again. He was so clear and his slides were helpful. He's very nice, talkative, and doesn't rush. Stats is a lot of info, and he broke it down well and made it manageable. He's a good marker and gives feedback, there were no due dates for assignments either.
I don't understand why people say this class is easy. Such a hard subject, really wish I never took this class. If you don't need it do not take it. Not a bird class. Not a first year class more like third level class.
Prof. Mahar is an awesome teacher. He's a funny, down to earth guy, and makes the class entertaining. He will answer any questions and he tells you what to study for the tests. Went out of my way to take stats with him since I enjoyed Mind and Brain so much! Going to class is advisable but if you study hard you can still do well without.
Chris is an awesome professor. Many people feel as though he comes off as lazy but he''s actually good at what he does. PSYC 1230 is an esay class if you study
Such a hard class, you need to write as fast as you can, 4 pages of notes every class. Very nice guy and very interesting subject but its not a class to goof off. Very hard be prepared to work but its kind of fascinating. would take mind and brain again just very difficult. But at least the tests are all 75 multiple choice.
The course is not easy but if you want to take it, take it with him. He really knows the curriculum and the fact that he likes what he is teaching makes it easier for you to like it too. He makes an effort to relate to students and make them feel comfortable and is also pretty funny at time. Definitely one of my favourite profs!
Very organized and he knows his stuff and if you read the textbook before class and then listen to him in the lectures it's super interesting and easy to understand. Be prepared to write a lot of notes but he repeats himself several times so it's not a problem. I would take all my classes with him. Very Good professor.
Chris is a wonderful professor, I took mind&brain with him and I loved it. I expected the class to be a joke, which it isnt but it is very easy as long as you go to class and take notes. Hes very passionate about what he teaches and knows the material well. All tests are 75 multiple choice and he posts ALL the notes you need and does test reviews.
Chris is great! Explains everything you need to know in great detail and repeats things so you have time to take notes. Yes, there is a lot to learn and memorize in this class, but Chris made things interesting and presented the material well... and he's funny. I'll look for his name when selecting my courses in the future.
I was very worried about taking this course due to the fact I suck at math. But I feel like this prof really saved me from failing. He is there for you and is easy to talk to. If you don't understand he has no issues explaining things to you. Definitely one of the better professors at this school
Chris was a great lecturer. He kept things as interesting as he could, and used a lot of humour to explain things when he could. The two midterms and the final were multiple choice, with a 'pick one' essay style bonus question. Term paper due on the last day. Show up and take notes, because the textbook goes far deeper than it needs to. Good guy.
Chris Mahar is my favorite professor at SMU. I had a mishap with one of my research papers and he was very understanding and helpful. Would recommend any class with him. 1210 is difficult but he does his best to make sure everyone understands and that the class isn't dry
All his courses are laid out the exact same way. The best prof I've ever had at Saint Mary's would recommend to anyone!
Chris is my favorite prof. I took his mind and brain course as well as his stats course, he taught both extremely well. His sense of humor lightens the mood in the class room and he is extremely helpful. He talks quickly but repeats himself enough that you shouldn't fall behind. You'll never be confused in his class. usually marks on a bell curve.
Chris is such a knowledgeable and down to earth professor. He is also very funny and always knows how to make the class laugh while understanding the material. I really enjoy his courses.
Memory is such a great class! Chris is a great prof! His teaching style is very laid-back however if you want to get an A+ you will have to work for it. Tests are not as easy as he says they are. He does give reviews but you shouldn't just read the parts he highlights as they consist of less than 50% of the tests.
I appreciated Prof Mahar for the clarity he brought to every aspect of his course. He talks fast for note taking, but puts all notes and slides on brightspace. Print them out, bring them to class to take notes on and you'll do well. He is very clear on what materials you'll be tested on and gives lots of time and guidance for final paper.
Best prof, take any course with him.
Excellent; I liked that he had assignments, they are a good way to boost the grade and practice the material. They didn't have a due date and he gave us the answers so we could check if he got the right answer. He repeats important things several times so everyone hears and understands. If you have to go through stats take it with him!!
The funniest prof I've ever had, makes class very interesting and easy to pay attention to! Not a hard marker, and don't need a textbook, if you just show up to class and listen to what he says you'll get an easy A!
The best professor I have had at Saint Mary's. If you are terrible at math but need to take statistics, TAKE IT WITH CHRIS MAHAR.
Great lectures, was nice he enjoyed expanding on topics and made sure to repeat important information for note taking. I recommend you to study names and experiment examples for the tests. You could easily get an A+ by going to lectures and taking notes. Very easy-going guy and I very much enjoyed going to class.
He is very funny and knows a-lot about his subject but moves way too fast through concepts. His test are mostly multiply choice and super hard. Not a good elective to take
Amzing Prof, Super funny and relates everything back to the subject, signed up for a second class with him!
Chris lectures from very clear and organized slides that highlight the key material. If you dont understand something, he will not make you feel stupid if you ask him to re-explain something. Also very funny. He is a professor who seems to actually care about his students succeeding. Awesome guy. Take this class!
Chris is a remarkable proffessor who always makes sure that his students have a good understanding of his martial. He spends a majority of his time ephmazing the key points (test questions) with his students, meaning his lectures are very straightforward and helpful to his class. Also, Chris is a rather funny guy so that's a good bonus.
Great guy, likes to crack jokes and makes sure students understand material and is more than willing to answer any questions about the course content. Is fairly clear on what course content will be tested and reviews content before tests. Would definitely take his class again.
Nice guy, and makes the lectures funny, but if you don't go to class, you won't pass. He goes into detail on each slide and gives examples and info that are on the exams in class ONLY. I find he talks a bit past and it's hard to catch all the important things, don't take the class if you aren't prepared to memorize and study
Chris is a respectable person and can be quite hilarious, but he speaks very fast and isn't clear on what is important for midterms/exams. He's lecture heavy and if you miss a class, goodluck.
He's a nice guy but speaks a mile a minute. His test reviews are basically him spitting words at you and you trying to write them down as fast as possible. Also its true if you miss a lecture you're going to have to play some serious catch-up because each lecture produces like 3 pages of notes. Fair enough grader though.
Mahar is a great guy who is personable with a good sense of humour that can keep lectures entertaining. However, the text has nothing to do with the course so lecture attendance is mandatory to have any idea what he is talking about - which is hard to do because he talks extremely fast. Tests are 70 multiple choice with short answers.
Really really funny guy, interesting lectures, you can tell he finds it interesting too and he teaches it in a way that helps it stick. Really lecture heavy though, but as long as you go to those and take notes you can do really well
The tests are only based on the lecture slides and the information he adds to them, so dont bother buying the textbook. Even though this class had to be adapted to online in a short period of time, he did a great job at it. My only complaint was that some of the power points had typos or were worded weirdly. Overall though, great class.
Love him! I'm currently taking this course online. There are 3 tests, some discussions, and 1 paper. The textbook follows his lectures perfectly and the class is very straightforward. He tells you the short answer questions in advance so you can prepare. Multiple choice questions can be tough but if you read his slides/the textbook you'll do great!
Prof Mahar is so funny. Lectures are kept interesting and chill but have A LOT of information. He pretty much tells you what will be on the tests so you can get a good mark as long as you don't get behind. From taking this course I learned I hate psych but it could have been a lot worse if the professor was bad
I really enjoyed taking his intro to learning psychology class. There are 3 tests in his course along with some discussions and a term paper. His tests are mainly based on his lectures and not so much on the textbook. Although some of his tests can be difficult, if you pay close attention to his lectures and take notes, you will be fine.
Class was three tests and a research paper. All three tests were based solely off of the lectures, so you do you have pay attention and go to class. In the lectures he clearly states what could be on the tests so if you prepare for those things it is an easy test. The paper was not bad and any questions you had, he would answer them.
I took Memory and Learning with him as I thought they will be easy because they are both for the first year. The tests were ridiculously hard. I even paid for an Indian Ph.D. candidate to do my test and still failed. I tried calling the Indian guy and he literally said this test cannot be solved, so save your soul, please. Don't take this course!
Took PSYC1230 & 1235 during summer. They were listed as sync but he changed it to async at the last moment. Never replies to your emails or shares feedback on tests & assignments. Instructions for the papers were unclear. The only good things are the scaling of grades and telling what to expect on the test. Don't buy bk. Didn't learn anything AVOID
Intro to memory is hard in person, but online it's not too bad. Chris talks extremely fast and covers a lot of information in one lecture, so you really have to focus and pay attention. Chris is easily accessible outside of class, so if you're having any trouble - email him. The course consists of 3 tests, 1 paper, and 10 discussion questions.
Dr. Mahar is a wonderful professor! You will definitely enjoy this class! I am currently taking his Intro to learning psych course and it has a great outline. Memory and Learning psych is worth taking!
Professor Mahar is an approachable person and very smart. He tells you what he will be looking for on tests. He uses a textbook but it is not needed if you listen to the lectures and take the right notes. His lectures are fast so be ready to write quickly if you aren't taking this online. There was no feedback from him on any submitted work.
This guy talks so fast for no reason. He is a smart man who very clearly knows his stuff, but god help yo if you miss a lecture or even stop paying attention for a second. If you leave to go to the washroom, you will probably unironically miss a half page - full page of notes. He is funny, and seems to be his real self during lectures.
Very fair professor
I took his biological psych class and intro to learning, he is a really good public speaker and his lectures are really interesting. Everything is accessible online all of the tests and lectures, overall he's a really good prof and his deadlines are fair. I wish he taught more courses;/
Dr. Mahar is one of few profs who genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is lenient and understanding, especially with the cost of living right now and knowing most students are working while going to school. There were 3 exams, a final paper, and short discussions posts in the class (no assignments).

very ADHD/ND friendly ! clear instructions+grading criteria, lectures are posted online, & he includes his presenter notes within his power points. + His lectures are really interesting. I have taken 2 classes of his (intro bio psych & intro learning psych) and really enjoyed them both :) ~discussion posts, research essay, online tests
In top 3 fave profs at smu. Had him for 3 classes, excited to take my 4th. Work load is extremely manageable. 3 tests and a paper, and some discussions. I love that he shares possible exam questions and they are always actually on the test! So easy to do well if you just listen to the lecture. Fair marker too. Honestly just great.
The course consists of 3 large exams, 1 term paper, and 10 discussion posts. Go to class and study his lecture slides for tests! Chris was very understanding and accommodating to a variety of student needs, which was so refreshing to see! He moved deadlines to work with students schedules. Hilarious and nice guy and would take another class of his.
excellent teacher gives you time to choose when to do things, he is open to a flexible schedule. he tapes and posts all lessons so if you miss one you can watch it or if you like rewatch them. fair at grading reasonable testing with M/C and 2 essays questions you get to pick to write on. I wish he taught more classes.
Very tests heavy.
Very flexible, very understanding, and great explanations. Great teacher all around!
Great prof. He's funny, flexible, explained and explained things very clearly.I took stats with him and he made it bearable. Grades generously
Lectures were incredibly info-heavy, with most being at least 10 pages of writing in my notebook. He posts them online afterwards, which was necessary to rewatch and be able to get all the information for the tests. However, he's very funny, obviously cares about the class and wants to engage the students. Tests were reasonable and grading is fair.
Professor Mahar's class is engaging and manageable. His lectures are interesting, and posting materials online makes it easy to stay on top of the work. unstuck study is a great study tool alongside the textbook.
I like the professor and he has a good sense of humor and personality. I took his Intro to Memory course and we have 3 tests that were all multiple choice and I found pretty difficult. Overall, I like him as a professor but hated the tests and found them difficult since they were like 80 multiple choice questions.
Such a great professor, extremely understanding and I want to take more classes with him next year
Lectures are engaging and recorded for self-paced viewing (zoom). The course has 3 tests (25% each, ~80 points, with 1 essay worth 20 and rest MC), 10 discussion posts (5%), and a term paper (20%). I found the grading to be a bit strict, and the material was a bit advanced for a first year class, but he is always there to answer questions quickly.
Third time taking a class with him. You should 100% seek out his classes if you have the option. Something of note is that if you take an online class with him, he tends to record the lectures, which is absolutely wonderful for people who like to do class at their own time or struggle with balancing work/class. Lotta multiple choice / short answer.
