Mr. Mangels is willing to put in the extra time for his students so long as he sees that they are putting in effort. He's understanding but won't tolerate a lot of excuses. Can be a bit of a hard ass but more often than not he's a sweet, goofy, intelligent man that wants to share a thought provoking experience with his classes.
This is the class I look forward to every week. Professor Mangels has a way of relating and connecting to his students better than any other professor I've ever had. He is smart, witty, and truly a kind person who wants the very best for his students. I would always recommend his class to anyone even if they arent particularly interested in theater
Chris is awesome, you can really tell that he loves what he's teaching and makes what he teaches really clear. He does get angry with students often, but not out of nowhere. Overall I would defiantly recommend him, he's my favorite professor so far.
He is a really talented guy in teaching, it kind of helps that he's quite attractive too. He has a great personality and it really clicks with the other students.
I think that he likes embarrassing students as punishment. He has no problem talking about another student's shortcomings in front of others. Always professes to be professional but doesn't always practice what he preaches.
he is awesome!!!!!!!!!! & so funny!!! totally recomend this for a chill and fun class(:
Mr. Mangels is very helpful and he makes the class fun. I enjoy his class very much. If you have any problems he can help you one on one.
He's awesome.
He puts so much effort into this job, this city, and his students, so all he wants is respect for theatre and effort from his students. Just show him that you care, talk to him if you have questions :) great guy! very funny
Great class. Mangels hands out so much credit.
Great class! Just go and pay attention, you will do well!
Chris is so funny and nice. He is helpful. Just show up, talk to him and do the work. He is a great guy and a wonderful teacher. And he loves what he does. He might get frustrated with the class sometimes, but it is because other people are not following his directions. And he is kinda cute! :)
Mangels is hilarious
He knows so much about theatre. He is very helpful if u ask for it. Not bad to look at either
Chris is a great professor! Easy to get along with if you're committed to your work. If you want to slack, then no, this is the wrong class. He's always available and willing to work with you, though.
Chris is a GREAT instructor, and didn't make the class any harder than it needed to be. His lectures are insightful and funny with minimal notes, but you must pay attention if you want to do well on tests. Very nice and easy to approach with questions, and appreciates hard working students.
Great teacher and a great guy. Ridiculous sense of humor and always made me want to come back to class. The movies he showed were amazing and I actually learned a lot by the end of the course.
Awesome teacher, good guy
His lectures have no visuals and boring but easy information. He talks down to the students and has crude jokes. There are movies he makes you watch but they are on Netflix and can watch them at home if necessary but prefers you in class. You have to attend at least 2 performances somewhere and write critiques that are to his standard. 5 tests.
Mr. Mangels is a great drama teacher, he is exceptional at teaching what he loves the most; drama. I loved participating in the plays, as it gives you a better grasp on this subject, a better understanding about the stage, and all it entails to put together a play. There is no reason not to pass this class.
Chris uses profanity but it's not meant to be intimidating, he's funny, amazing professor! Go to class take notes and you will pass. He really makes the effort to be open and not intimidating like most teachers
Great guy. Can be a jerk if in a bad mood, and take it out on students, but generally really easy to work with. The key to passing is to care about the material, and always ask for help. He really holds you to high standards.
really enjoyed his class
Chris is my favorite professor ever. Inspires me constantly, is a total smart alec, and knows his stuff. He's very passionate about theatre, and it always shows. He doesn't take any crap though, and he expects your 100% commitment. This is not an easy class. However, if you're truly serious about acting, this is the class for you. It's amazing.
I took Mr. Mangels for an international film appreciation class, and I r,eally enjoyed it! He picked excellent movies, and we had a fruitful discussion before and after each film. At first, I wasn't sure how to fill out our film critiques, but he gave detailed instruction in class and in writing.
Funny guy. You have to show up to class and get the textbook. Don't test him because he will call you out in front of class. Lectures were funny and entertaining. Gives lots of extra credit. You'll pass don't worry about.
Chris is probably one of the greatest acting professors I've ever taken. He's so passionate about his craft and it shows through his critiques after performances. I learned so much from him as an actor and I'm extremely thankful. Totally take him if you're interested in performing. Plus he's pretty easy on the eyes and HILARIOUS.
This Old Shoelace Is Outgoing, Respected And Loves To Give Respect Back To His Students.
Beware the Shakespeare class is more like an English class in terms of you having to write a lot of papers! but if you love writing like me then its the class for you. Chris can be intimidating but if you show up, do the work, read the plays, and speak up every now and then in class he respects you. Just DON'T BE TARDY or miss class.
Took him for Film Appreciation. Gives LOTS of extra credit so therefore hes kind of rude about people asking him for help when their grade is low. Attend every class and take the online quiz and you'll pass with an A! Enjoyed the movies he had us watch and liked his sense of humor he expressed to the class. Super easy class to pass!
Mr. Mangels comes with a wealth of knowledge and articulates it extremely well. He cares about the subject matter and it's important to him that students learn it. A great professor!
This professor is really cool. When it comes to taking tests I felt like it was more lecture based rather than using the textbook. He is actually understanding and allows you to take the test a week after the original date. He gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage of it, it really makes a huge impact.
Hes so funny! He offers so much extra credit. I ended his class with a 107%. I think the highest he said you can get was like a 124%. I had him MWF so they were short classes, but the tests were based off lectures so its better to be there!
The class was an Easy A. Our quizzes were based on the movie we watched for the week and the article he assigned. Also, he normally gave the answers via his lectures. However the class was super long and he LOVES to talk about the movies... so you will stay until the last minute of class. He rarely let us out early.
Cris is a great guy who truly wants his students to succeed. Everything he expects is clear on the syllabus and he gives you a rubric for each essay. The class is point based (1000) and he offers TONS of extra credit. Take him, you wont regret it. I took during summer school
Chris is passionate about film and if you take this class, you will definitely see it. I took this class during the summer. It was definitely fast, but you are expected to keep up. Test for every film you watch with a paper due at the end of the semester. You have a solid chance to get an A in this class, with various extra credit opportunities.
hes a pretty good professor. he gets straight to the point with things and gives tons of extra credit.
The class is easy to follow if you attend and study, do your work etc, but he is the type of professor to say 'No one ever gets an A in this class.' It's not always fair, but i guess if you try your best you will get a passing grade.
He gives interesting lectures and is super funny! Hes very straightforward and its an easy A if you just do your assignments. Lots of extra credit opportunities, I definitely recommend
Before taking Drama One I had never been interested in theater. He requires attendance to plays at the theater and allows extra credit to see plays outside of COS. After taking his class and attending plays I found love for going to watch plays and deep thinking into the minds of the director. INTERESTING LECTURES! Hilarious professor
Watch movies, read a little, take some quizzes, and one big essay. THAT'S IT! Movies were very inspirational, very rarely did I not like the movies we watched. DON'T FALL ASLEEP OR MESS AROUND DURING THE MOVIE! The easiest yet most enjoyable class you'll take.
The most organized professor I have had at COS. He gives a clear cut outline for your grades in the beginning & how to calculate. Attendance is the most important. DONT MISS CLASS bc you will have to fight for your grade in the end. Do not miss out on extra credit. Hes a pretty funny professor & has a great passion for cinema. ALSO NO LATE WORK
Chris is an amazing teacher. He's honest but wants nothing more to help you learn. I learned a lot in this class, but he's not as easy as another drama teacher. There are weekly quizzes, 4 exams, and you must write 2 critiques of the COS shows. He's hilarious though and makes the class enjoyable and interesting.
Amazing professor! Dont listen to the other reviews - super easy. If you do the work you will get an A. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. I literally got a D on one test and still passed with over 100. Make sure to read the book for the final - its interesting too. I recommend going on sparknotes to take practice quizzes for the final.
I havent finished the semester yet, but I want to applaud Mangels for being so understanding during this pandemic. Hes an amazing professor, has simple assignments, and offers extra credit. Just do your work on before Sunday night and youll be good! Highly recommend
He's very nice & he cares about his students. He's more than happy to help if you take the initiative and email him. His grading criteria is clear. Just do 1 assignment a day & take the quiz at the end of the week. When you do the assignments & watch the videos, I recommend you take notes it'll help you more with the quizzes & it'll be faster
I took Professor Mangels cinema class online during the pandemic. He did a great job with the design for the way the assignments are available. There's a test at the end of each week reviewing what you learned. He makes it super easy to pass. If you need him he's also available by email and office hours. Definitely a great choice.
I took CINA032 before this class, and this one was just as interesting and fun !
Great professor! There was a test every Friday but they were super easy and he always gave us an optional extra credit quiz which was only a few questions. He was really understanding and made everything simple and easily accessible for us.
The textbook (free) was actually fun to read, and the movies you watch are enjoyable. He offers extra credit every week, and the questions are very easy. His grading scale is also really nice. He doesn't accept late work but the homework load is light. He is also very approachable and easy to email, I would definitely take his class again. ........
Very cool guy, wish him the best in life
Super easy class. Would take it again. Highly recommend. Easy Class.
Having had him online I know that this was not the usual experience people have but the movies were great the quizzes were alright I think having him in person with a friend would have been very fun.
I took the summer course, so there was a lot of work. I got a 99% and there was a lot of extra credit that I didnt do, so I could have got over 100%. He gives plenty of extra credit, and even though there was a lot of work it was doable. He gave pretty good feedback on grading if you did something wrong too. I would recommend his as a teacher
Took this course during the summer so there was a lot of homework obviously. As long as you read and pay attention during the lectures the homework makes sense. He gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit so take advantage. He is very helpful if you have any questions, I would definitely take this class again.
Great professor. I took Drama 1 for general credits, b it actually learned a lot. Easy to get an A if you follow the basic Instructions
I took Professor Mangels Film Appreciation-American class online and I really enjoyed it! Every week there is a new film you must watch and take a quiz on. Extra credit is offered every single week. Both the midterm and final are fairly simple discussion posts that are mandatory to pass the class. Overall I highly recommend taking this course!
The movies where all really interesting and you could find most of the quiz in what you read, but there is a lot to read every week. However he gave extra credit opportunities every week.
Textbook use he has the book for you. Awesome professor, nothing bad you can say about him. Makes everything clear, has office hours. Loved the films he showed.
Fun professor, but class is test heavy. I took both film classes as my general ed and they were fun. There was just a lot of quizzes, at least one a week plus and bonus quiz. Also includes a lot reading and video watching.
Took this class for GE requirements, but I ended up loving it. Great movie selection.
An easy A class. Just do the quizzes and extra credit quizzes weekly. Midterm and Final are just a movie review.
As long as you do your homework, which is the same thing every week a quiz open book, your point of view of what the lesson was about and a response of one your peers you're pretty much good to go. This is the way it is the entire semester. He does have EC opportunities, is available and easy to reach for any questions.
Super easy class, Professor is funny in lectures. Nice dude.
Chris is an amazing professor! His teaching style is great and he's understanding. The work in this class can be somewhat challenging but it's really rewarding. I highly recommend you take any theater class taught by Chris!
Pretty easy class, but it does get harder at the end. Make sure you set a good amount of time for this class since he make's you watch a lot of videos and or read from a book. He can take a little long to reply to emails but is a nice guy. I did not worry too much about this class, kind of forgot I had it since I would do the hw in 2 days!
I wish I could've gotten to know Professor Mangels more since his passion for film seeps through the class itself. This course is genuinely fun and watching the films have brought insight onto what art can be. I'm not a hardcore film watcher but I appreciate a lot of this passion that goes into film and the art behind it. Class lets us focus on it.
I mean CINA31 and 32 are football major classes. You take a quiz for each film (and corresponding readings) and only have two writing assignments. Easily got 112%.
overall a good professor, he is passionate about theatre and is very thorough. He gives a significant amount of extra credit. I took this class as an online summer class.
Overall a very good experience. Chris is an amazing teacher: very passionate about cinema and very knowledgeable. It was a summer 3 week online class so the homework load was pretty intense on a daily basis. He was accessible via online office hours twice a week. Extra credit certainly helps. Great selection of international cinema for every taste.
Cinema 031 with Chris Mangels was okay, but meh. The movies were pretty boring to watch in my opinion and I didn't want to waste my time having to watch something that would make me want to fall asleep while at home. It's best if you take a different Arts class for your GE requirements other than Cinema 031 and/or 032.
Taking his class online is an interesting experience. I think he is a great professor though. He gives modules weekly of what to read, watch, and then a quiz after. On top of this, he gives extra credit opportunities weekly. Very laid back, I would take another one of his classes given the opportunity.
I loved loved loved this class. Although I wasn't expecting to watch the movies we watched, I actually learned a lot about cinema and the production behind it. Class is pretty easy and can go at your own pace until the due dates but I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Thanks!
Professor Mangels provides plenty of extra credit. His movie choices were interesting and entertaining. His class is straightforward and easy.
Chris mangles is a really good professor. His lectures are engaging and he's absolutely funny and relatable. He is extremely passionate about the theatre and you will definitely learn a lot of insightful things. He grades fairly. The exam and discussions are a bit tough, but if you read the material you'll be fine! Good luck! (yes extra credit)
The movies are boring asf and quiz questions cannot be searched on google :(. I don't understand how people can handle this class and call it "fun"
Professor Mangels was a great professor for Cinema 031! The movies were really interesting to watch and we only had to do 2 writing assignments (Midterm and Final)! And along with that, there was extra credit offered every other week in case you missed a few points from getting what percentage you wanted in the class. I'd highly recommend Mangels!
Professor Mangels is the best professor I have had. He has a wonderful character, and I look forward to enrolling in more of his classes.
Awesome Professor, am gonna take again
I took the Online Summer Class, fun lectures, lots of extra credit. Professor responds to emails and was very helpful and always available.
He loves what he does
Definitely my favorite professor
Good professor, easy class. My cons however are that the modules are poorly designed. It is not easy to read and I had an easier time understanding them if I used text-to-speech than if I actually read them.
Great professor. Very peppy. The modules were super easy to navigate. Like overly easy. The reading can get long but you learn a lot. The movies in the 1st half are old so many might not like them but I did so just be open minded. The quizzes were easy and straight from the module. Would recommend.
This class was a breeze to take, as long as you submit all your work on time. Professor Mangels is one of those professors that wants you to pass and will give you as many resources possible for you to do so.
I did not like this class and I do not care for cinema maybe this is why I had hard time connecting. nothing against the professor and his work I would totally reccomend him to someone who loves cinema.
Very interesting class. I enjoyed the content and the movies included in this course. I have a knew found love for film/cinema. Mangels is a great professor and I would definitely take another one of his courses if I could.
Weekly discussions and quizzes that make up most of your grade. Despite what he says I did not read the required play and did fine on the final, as long as you show up for your discussions you'll get the gist enough to be able to do the exams and the final.
Very accommodating when you need it and helpful, answers quickly to emails also so he is easy to reach. I took the online Into to theatre course over summer and he made it as easy for us as possible to help us even though it has to be rushed. He is very kind and explains things well. Definitely recommend this professor.
I loved Professor Mangels definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Professor Mangels was very accepting and responded quickly to emails. I took the course online and would highly recommend for your general ed. The course itself is pretty easy, you watch movies, read articles, and answer questions. The only difficult part of the entire course is the midterm and final essay. Also, LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT!!!! Over 100%
Professor Mangels is organized and gives out a lot of extra credit. Quizzes are tedious, some answers are extremely ambiguous, making a perfect score nearly impossible. Syllabus says assignments are due Friday, they're not. Heavy workload and all has to be done by Wednesday (except the 1 assignment actually due on Friday). I'm glad to be done.
I took Intro to theatre online and professor was not bad at all, he was actually organized and does provide extra credit BUT you have a quiz EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Each quiz is 24 questions and due every Wednesday with a discussion post. Every quiz is open note because he provides the notes but the notes are extreme long and lots of reading.
I learned a lot of about theatre in this class. In the syllabus it said coursework was due on Friday, but they were actually due Wednesday with only one assignment actually due on Friday. It was a lot of work to do all in 3 days. He's clear on grading, so follow the rubric and you should pass no problem. He cares about his students success.
This class is very easy, if you do your quizzes and DO NOT use AI you will pass. He gives you every chance to get extra credit GO TO STUDENT HOURS!!!! Student hours and shows and towards the end of the semester you could even score extra credit for showing up and completing every assignment in the syllabus. Seriously so many ways to pass
Awesome! So passionate and he really is just looking for your best work and effort. Changed how I saw myself and my work, he inspired me to just, "be a cat, if you throw a cat they're just like 'cool I was going this way anyways.'"
Professor Mangels makes this online cinema class super engaging. Weekly modules and quizzes keep you on track, plus lots of extra credit. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for studying - highly recommend taking this class!
cool guy. funny and caring. a little mean sometimes but its more like a work environment so kinda fair. learned a lot. the work was fun and not too heavy
Weekly quizzes on the movies, but the answers were directly from the provided (light) supplemental reading, and he went over the answers for the questions related to the movie right after the movie. Super easy class, and the professor seems really invested in creating an inclusive environment for all students. Attendance counts.
Best professor I've ever had
Best teacher! Very understanding whenever I cannot make it to class
Chris was a great professor for American Cinema. He gives extra credit opportunities every week! And some others sprinkled out through the semester. There are pop quizzes before the class so make sure you do the homework and understand the material!! He really wants you to do well in the class.
Awesome professor!
Easy course, yet you will learn a lot. Really insightful lectures, online assignments, I missed a day or two here and there because of burnout but was able to watch the given weeks film from home on canvas/kanopy. Very fun class, would love to take another one just like it. Don't miss the opportunity to take this class!
Prof.Mangles is very kind! He pushes for a deeper understanding of cinema and uses very interesting, fun, sad, and deep thought films. Highly recommend if you're looking for a professor who is understanding and offers very exciting films for the course!
Best teacher ever.
super chill professor and manageable class. you take a mini quiz with less than 20 questions before and after the movie. there are lots of reading but you have a whole week to read. super funny and really explains the meaning of each film. is strict but for good reason all he cares about is you learn the art in film and what you think about it.
Absolutely loved his class, highly recommend.
Chris is one of the kindest people I've ever met. This was my first college class, and I immediately felt welcomed and accepted. He is accessible outside of class and usually replies very quickly, and his priority is making his students feel safe, comfortable, and welcome. The biggest thing in any class with him is that respect goes both ways.
Enriching class with great Canvas set up. He takes his work very seriously, and he will expect the same of you. If you disrespect his class or theater, he will call you out. TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT. Very accessible outside of class. You must attend the classes - the codes for the quizzes are provided there.
