Awesome Guy!

Zooms through the slides in class, doesn't know any answers when you ask a question. Nice exam though!

Very nice man independently, but doesn't seem to answer questions in class very clearly. Unclear slides, and lecture seems jumbled and fast.
Awesome exam. Raced through slides though. Like a freight train.
Dr Moyes was an enigma. Marking seemed subjective. I found he showed favourtism towards thesis students. Also, he almost made me cry during my seminar. It was an anxiety-ridden experience felt by more than just me!
My favorite first year prof. Makes class seem like a discovery chanal show and exams were fair.
Man can't teach. Period.
Moyes is my favorite first year prof. He's such a good teacher and the materials interesting too.
Very interesting, really knows his stuff. People complain he goes too fast, but there's a TON of stuff to cover. Not his fault.
So boring, I'm surprised HE'S awake! Teaching, especially to first years, is NOT his strong suit.
A good teacher who expects a lot from his students. If you can pull your weight, you'll do great.
Sooooooo dreamy
Amazing prof with an unusually good looking lab
This guy was ALL over the place in his lectures. His short answer questions on the midterms were fair, but his MC questions on the final were absolutely ridiculous (hard). But he's very quick to respond to emails. Didn't find him so personable in person though. Not someone I'd be personal friends with!
Moyes is a great prof. the material is a bit dry, but he keeps you entertained with hilarious youtube videos. he is extremely nice and even gave us two alternate dates to write the midterm to try to make everyones schedule better, which was very nice of him. his tests are pretty fair, but you need to study.
Mumbles a lot and his voice is hard to properly hear. He has no direction in his lectures just a bunch of jumbled talking .
He was really unhelpful and unclear for all his lectures, he essentially read off the slide and his explanations were very weak.
Very interested in what he's speaking about but otherwise he's mediocre.
Asks helpful and relevant questions during lectures that are likely to show up on the exam
Dr. Moyes made the very interesting topic of genetics pretty boring with his monotone voice. On the upside his slides are very clear, always posted online and include key terms and passages of the textbook to read.
Man, Christopher Moyes. Let me start by saying that this man has the most monotone voice in history. He's a smart guy (wrote some of the textbook) but made lectures extremely boring. Doesn't explain things too much.
Multiple choice questions sound easy.. until this class. Lectures were okay, Moyes made okay use of iClickers for interactive lectures, but often went too quickly over the most important information, sometimes hard to pick out the important information.
Have your IClicker ready before hand bc he give you like 2 seconds to read and answer the question by the time he stops the IClicker machine. Be prepared for questions that seem to make no sense, sometimes he has funny jokes .ya
The exam was not hard, which was good but the lectures were terrible. He has a tendency to mumble or just assume that you already know something. You will do fine as long as you pay attention and get the key concepts.
Material was presented very straightforwardly for the most part. Review the lecture videos before the exam and you will be fine.
I love him.
Lectures are all over the place. If you don't go you will miss things that are not on the slides because his slides are not very good. A lot of small assignments that can bring down your grade if you do not pull full effort in to each. Very hard marker. Not very personable or approachable.
I used to like biology, then I took Moyes' class.
He has prelecture powerpoints of him talking over the slides and honestly if you watch those and take notes you don't need to go to class. He gives clear outlines of what he wants you to know. He may not be the best lecturer in person, but his prelecture slides are very clear and give a lot of detail. His quiz questions are hard though.
Moyes lectures were all over the place and mostly focused on very specific examples rather than general ideas. His midterm and section of the final exam were not reflective of the course material and very difficult. I do not believe my grades reflected my knowledge of his material at all.
Extremely difficult final. Confusing lecture slides, must attend lectures to understand anything.
Cut my marks because I responded to discussions in one day instead of spreading it over a couple of days. Has the most monotone voice. Man not smooth! Man a Hill!
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD, made me HATE one of my favourite courses.
Very unclear in his expectations for assignments and hes not accommodating to students, unapproachable (rude email responses) and unfair marking schemes. I would not take any class this professor ever again.
No empathy or whatsoever. The most monotone voice I have ever heard. Should be more understanding, especially during these harsh Covid times.
Not accommodating and rude email responses
Sent extremely rude emails, calling my classmates and I "nobodies", saying that we do not matter . Grading scheme that didnt make any sense. "I liked it" or "didnt", did not highlight expectations at ALL! Gave straight 0's on quizzes, even if answers were correct... and ignored emails about the topic regarding feedback on quizzes. JUST HORRIBLE!!!!
The content itself is incredibly interesting but the prof doesn't seem very organized or care much for students. Expect to feel overwhelmed because all assignments are dragged out for 4 weeks overlapping. Exam's hard, with no key concepts only very SPECIFIC questions, no point in studying because it doesn't test your understanding of the course.
very vague marking scheme, confused expectations, I think the worst professor of all times.
If you ever decide to commit academic suicide, take a course with him .
Neither his lectures nor recommended readings are remotely good preparation for the questions he poses on quizzes and assignments. In his responses to students he seems to have the mentality that it's everyone but his own issue that he fails to teach the course material. Highly unlikeable and poor teacher.
Did not teach!! Quizzes were not based on lecture content he taught, so much application that you're trying to search for an answer on google and still can't even understand the question nor find an answer. I feel like no matter how much I study, I can't seem to get above 60%-70% on quizzes. I'm sure the midterm and final exam will be horrible.
Queen's has already made me hate biology with the joyride that was 102. Thinking it couldn't get any worse was an understatement. Made me realize the mistake I made deciding to go to this circus of a university. Don't even try in this class, it's not worth your time.
His online lectures make no sense to me, and a lot of the stuff in his lectures is unnecessary information. Halfway through the course I switch to textbook readings only, and found that most of this quiz questions were relevant to the textbook readings than his own lectures. His online quiz questions are very difficult to understand.
Tests did nothing correlate to lecture material at all. Did not care people did not understand content. Exam was so broad that no amount of studying could have helped. Lectures were dry and boring with excessive irrelevant information. textbook was more help than his lectures for understanding content
I feel bad seeing all these bad ratings on Prof. Moyes. Online school is hard for everyone including profs - especially due to excessive cheating. Moyes recognized this & made all assessments open book. The exam was very hard, but the quizzes were quite fair & he provided discussion boards to go over hard Qs as a group. He is a very OK professor.
Not organized PPT & not clear explaination
He is not super involved with the class and his quizzes are extremely hard, to the point where it has nothing to do with the course material.
Lectures were content-heavy and sometimes hard to follow because they were so dry. Due to online classes, most of the assessments were composed of application questions (which is to be expected) but he made them so hard that the midterm was literally impossible. Another reason why first-year bio is garbage.
I dont understand all the hate for Moyes- he really isnt a bad teacher. You get what you give in his class and even though he can be pretty short in responses to emails he does just wanna help you learn. He doesnt try to be your friend but you absolutely can be successful in his class but you really gotta try
This course is so disorganized!!! Group work can only take place in the discussion board to finish labs... NO ONE RESPONDS! It's so hard to adequately participate in group labs when the means of communication is only allowed to exist on onQ. The quizzes are absolutely impossible... They are trickery application questions not based on the module.
An awful professor. Worst professor I have ever had. Makes you absolutely dread listening to his lectures as he is completely monotone and simply reads from a transcript instead of actually teaching. Avoid this professor at ALL COSTS!!!
His lectures are the most boring hours of my week. He talks way too fast, reading entirely off of a script so they are not engaging. The lecture content has nothing to do with the textbook content. His quizzes are unreasonably hard. It doesn't matter how much you study you won't know a single answer.
Hard no. All the quizzes and tests are basically English and literacy tests, as everything is a trick question.
Get ready to read, speaks very fast and not open to clarifying concepts. Not tech savvy.
Speaks very quickly in online lectures, doesn't answer questions clearly, makes quizzes absurdly difficult with long extremely complicated application questions, and seems to enjoy it when we struggle.
Wakes up and kicks puppies. Moyes wants to see you cry, reads off his notes during lectures and belittles students during discussion replies. Test questions are extremely niche.
Prof Moyes makes me so frustrated and is the complete opposite of inspiring. His lectures always go a mile a minute. The worst part is at least thrice per lecture he says "You've probably heard of this random molecule" Like no, ofc I haven't heard of it, Please stop making me feel dumb.
Moyes is a walking L. He makes every quiz miserable and impossible. He prays on our downfall and feeds on failure. Run!
Dr. Moyes is clearly very well-versed in his field of study, but I saw many students floundering with his heavy lecture material, off-putting attitude, and overly specific questions. I would say he is not a terrible professor, but he can come off a bit conceited at times and is certainly not the best choice for an enjoyable classroom experience.
Honestly try and avoid any courses with this prof. Nothing in this course is easy, there are unit collaborative quizzes which are extremely difficult, along with individual unit quizzes that consist of so much reading. The midterm was hard. We get little to no feedback on any assignment or test so we don't know where anything wen't wrong.
Trying to be as nice as possible by not saying anything rude. But what I can say, with 100% confidence, is that he's my least favourite prof I've had at Queen's. Good luck
Just wow... Chris Moyes does not know how to teach. Seems like a nice guy but doesn't understand you need to teach the definition of something before using it in your explanation of something else. His lectures make no sense because of this reason. Your brain will spin and it'll suck.
Lecture videos take hours to do one 20 minute video since you have to stop every 2-3 seconds to write down all that he said. He mentions not to memorize all the specifics of his talk and just the basic premises, then all the specifics are on the quizzes. Quizzes don't have much to do with the lecture videos at all and i cant do this anymore so bad.
Straight up bad prof. I love biology but this course has made me question everything. lecture videos are basically useless but the textbook readings are extremely lengthy and take forever to get through. The questions on the content and collaborative quizzes are worded in a confusing way to intentionally make you second guess yourself. unenjoyable.
During lectures it seems like he does not know what he's talking about. He says to focus on big picture and then only asks insanely specific questions. Some of the questions can't be answered with the textbook or the lectures.
He isn't a horrible prof as everyone makes him look, he is just like any other bio prof in first year and honestly everyone complaining should be thankful this course wasn't taught by Dr.Sharon. he gives good advices for students navigating his portion of the course. his tests are hard but doable. read the textbook and go to office hours
I hate him. I don't understand his way of thinking and marking the quizzes. You will still fail the quizzes even if you read each chapter, went to each lecture, and did the DSM.
Moyes seems not to care about the course. His content and collaborative quizzes are filled with MC questions that have more than one answer, and still cannot be determined even after going to lectures and reading the textbook.
Dr. Moyes may have a knack for coming up with pretty tough questions, but I feel like doing his questions has really improved my way of thinking because things aren't always going to be straightforward, especially moving on from first year. He's also really active and helpful on the question forum.
Was so scared cause of all the reviews on here, but he was not half as bad as I thought he would be. Not engaging at all compared to good chris, but was not mean or hard to approach. Tests were ridiculous, questions were long and difficult to understand.
I asked a question in class, he openly laughed at me, then proceeded to not answer and carry on.
Asks your question back to you instead of answering it or referring you to other resources. MC questions on onQ tests unclear, seemingly multiple answers, oftentimes stuff you've seen once and haven't covered in-depth. His wording could be a lot clearer and more concise, many words he puts together make no sense to me. Collab quiz...brutal...
Having Moyes as a professor made me regret taking BIOL103 altogether. His content quizzes made no sense and the collaborative quizzes were a waste of time because even he could not figure out the answer. Lastly if there's ever a live action Despicable Me movie, he should be casted as Gru. He looks like an inverted dorito so enjoy them while you can
Moyes' is the walking definition of the splash back.
I didn't find Moyes that bad sure his tests were harder but it's not impossible to do it.the way he designs his questions actually makes you think about the content you are learning and makes sure it sticks with you for the exam rather than making the answer obvious. content he covers is already hard so learn to make good notes and ask for help!
the content quizzes he administers are nearly completely unrelated to the lectures, so what you study is not whats on tests. He tries to use "high class" vernacular English in multiple choice questions/answers to purposefully confuse instead of educate students. I think this prof enjoys feeling superior to students. Doesn't give feedback either.
Heartless. When you email ab deadline errors he couldn't care less. Lost 8% on assignments that aren't put as "graded" in assignments. Begged for a way to redo it & he brushed me off. Syllabus, assignment/quiz tab & timeline are all different in due dates he'd just say "refer to the timeline" when syllabus is wrong & vise versa. He needs to be fired
count your days chris
Moyes is not great at most things he does. It is definitely possible to do well, but the lectures are not very related to topics that are tested in the quizzes and exams. His slides are quite unorganized and don't focus very well on any specific topic, and he talks very fast in lectures, mumbling when he trips up instead of correcting himself.
terrible. Worst midterm I have taken. Extremely unfair. Do not take this class unless you have to.
Online non proctored midterm and somehow my worst exam grade yet. Did better on my physics midterm and final and I didn't even take physics in high school. Midterm was set up for people to fail.
Worst prof yet. Terrible class, ruins the content. Lecture quizzes are not related to the content taught in class.
terrible man.
Lowest mark I have received yet on an exam. Midterm content was not related to any of the readings
he must enjoy giving out terrible grades. He is incredibly condescending.
Blamed a horrible overall midterm average on the students.
how does this man still have a teaching job?
No words.
Get sacked.
Got an A+ BIOL 102, got a 50% on the midterm.
why chris why?
Bio went from being my fave science to my academic breaking point in 8 weeks. Moyes really just said lets make em dislike bio
I used to love biology, but now I hate it. This class tested the most irrelevant material. I read the textbook, did all the lecture videos and studied the DSM's and still felt blind sided by the midterm.
Studied on average 18 hours a week for this class not including class time only to receive my worst mark yet at university on the midterm.
Cool content. Terrible prof. Ruined biology for me.
If you're going into life sci physics, calc, and comp sci are easy money compared to this course. Think that says enough about how unfair and hard this course is.
I thought I wanted to do biology before this class, now I pray I never have to be tested like this again. This class ruined biology content for me.
worst class
Professor Moyes rushes over the material. He speaks incredibly fast and merely skims over the slides. I could be trying to take notes for one slide and once I look back up, I am 2 slides behind. I find he is more focused on going over 35-45 slide PowerPoints in the time give rather than actually teaching the material.
Makes me hate Bio. Worst grade I've gotten in uni so far - worse than physics and calculus.
Chris Moyes might be the worst professor / teacher I have ever had in my life. Avoid him at all costs. He tests irrelevant material and ultimately blames the students for the low average for not knowing something that was never taught. Just a sad, sad man with a power trip.
Not that great. The preamble to his questions were extremely long. He talked about understanding 'the big picture' but asked very specific questions- such as specific facts about specific species. He taught like he was preparing us for the exam... instead of teaching us biology.
I swear to god, I thought the reviews about him were jokes. But nope! He is the walking devil incarnate. Tests are near impossible, he forced you to read hundreds of textbook pages a week on top of other assignments and tests, and is not helpful at ALL with lecture material. At one point, he just said "We talked about it in lecture." when confused.
Worst professor ever. Makes me wish I went to a different university. He can't explain anything, and rushes through the material. He's rude and blames students for not using "resources" when the midterm average was ridiculously low despite it being an incredibly unfair assessment. Says we should use the discussion forum, but then doesn't respond.
Dr.Moyes makes biology incredibly draining and needlessly complex. Navigating through his content was burdensome due to disorganization, bloated content, and his wordy explanations/questions. Everything is setup to make you feel frustrated rather than engaged. It's quite obvious why over 30 students withdrew from the course within the first month.
Just unbelievable. All of his tested content cannot be found anywhere in DSMs/Lecture Content/Textbook except through an extensive Google search looking through PubMed research. He speaks really fast and has useless lecture slides. Blames impossible tests on students and does not bell curve. Setup for failure. Avoid at all costs.
I took this course as a second degree student (BHSc) already having a STEM degree, and by far he is one of the worst biology profs I've ever had. I could forgive his confusing explanations/ exam questions if it weren't for the fact that he is so rude and derogatory. Do not take a class with him if you can help it.
There are so many different issues with this course it's difficult to sum it up in 350 characters. This must be a course they use to weed out health science students early on; it's the only explanation I can settle on that makes sense. For context, this is not my first uni course. I am a returning, mature student with a degree and career already.
Avoid this professor at all costs. His tests are incredibly difficult and cover obscure, irrelevant material. Quizard and ChatGPT were helpful for study prep, but the class is still a nightmare.
