Dr. Nagel is a really BAD professor! His class is supposedly geared towards the teaching profession. However, I have yet to see why (By the way, finals start next week!). Clarity, as far as assignments go, is non-existant.
Throughly enjoyed his class. He was always willing to help and very supportive.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He made us read anti-government, anti-technology booklets all semester. On top of it, he does not let you have your own opinion on a topic. He will mark you down if you disagree with him.
his biggest problem is that he's so boring. fell asleep numerous times in class. he doesn't really help u. not a good prf..but somehow i managed an A
Easily one of the worst professors I've taken a class with.
I thought Dr. Nagel was easy-going and he cut me more slack than I deserved in turning in work. I thought he was a good guy and had a good sense of humor. Some of these reviews seem overly harsh.
class was all about him preaching his thoughts and critizing students
assignments are unclear, grading is arbitrary. successful students will be the ones who agree with his point of view, but not blindly; they will also provide reasons to support their (his) position.
interesting class. very good at explaining the text. nice guy.

cool guy. pretty fun class. makes you think.
Absolutely the worst teacher ever. Way too opinionated and boring and unclear. His class was just no fun, even though I got a B+, but the grading seemed totally random and he gives no helpful comments.

Nagel is a nice and down to earth teacher at first until your first real discussion with him and thats when you realize that what he says generally makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Its not really his fault though since Philosophy is about as interesting a subject as typewriter repair. ugh.

He was an easy techer. The class was boring, but not his fault. It is a mandatory req
I feel as though I gained stupidity and absolute bs as a result from taking this class. Completely a waste of my time.

Came to class with HICKIES way too many times--it was PROFESSIONAL ETHICS CLASS! Practice what you preach! He's quite full of himself, although he did try to encourage student involvement. It's a shame students have to take his classes.
One word: HIPPIE. GL if you take any of his classes.
This class is a piece of cake. Just do the homework!
Great professor. Just read so that you can contribute to the discussions, as long as you know what's going on it's a great class, he's a fun guy.
Somewhat Interesting. Had to force myself to pay attention to some degree. Studied hard and only got a B in the class. His main papers are worth 25% of the class, and they are graded subjectively. Don't recommend if you have a high GPA, that you want to keep.
Professional Ethics. Chris Nagel is great- but you can't be a slacker to do well. This isn't High School people, you get what you put in! If you read the essays, go to the class, and actually pay attention- you'll get a good grade...period. Prof. is very helpful and fair. He requires you to THINK and APPLY. If that's not for you- try a Jr. College.
Your grade will replect the work you put in. If you don't read the assignment and participate in the class, your grade will how it. If you DO the reading, participate and apply the concepts to your work- you'll do quite well.
Professor is too full of himself and too into himself. I'm not interested in whether or not he thinks he has great hair. An ethics class should teach you about ethics--this didn't. Avoid Doc Nagel.
the whole time in class i had no idea what anyone was talking about
hella chill guy, although class is somewhat boring, its easy and hes pretty down to earth. all u gotta do is write responses to readings and take 1 test and a final. i got an easy B and i had no clue what was goin on.
worst teacher ever. tried to get our class to protest every think goiing on on campus. he needs a life
hes ok. very passionate, interesting subject, remeber to retake the quiz twice online if availabe, easy points, do well on the papers and participate and its not to hard to do ok in this class.
Professional ethics. No exams and no textbook. 9-10 online quizzes that allow you two attempts on each quiz(very easy). 4 informal response papers and 2 formal papers (no length req on either). Participation is 10% of grade and subjectively based (attendance alone isn't enough). Responds quickly to email and gives good feedback on your papers.
Very nice man, but class was unstructured. Turned out to be more of a philosophy class than a reading seminar in humanities. Class was easy, but I left feeling as though I had not learned a great deal.
Great teacher. Sitting in his class now. Very passionate about his work which gives you a better clarity on issues at hand. Very rare to find a passionate teacher. Over all, GREAT GUY AND PROFESSOR!!!!
I had him in 2006. He keep talking about the supposed's teacher strike and getting students to join his side. Did this very beginning up to 15 minutes. I noticed that he was giving good grades to a journalism student for giving good press about the strike they were doing. Very unethical. Hard to understand the topics and readings were not easy
Good teacher but gets carried away at times.
Not an easy teacher, but the class was fun and interesting. Your grade will be based on papers and particpation only.
HE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR! I AM A BIOLOGY MAJOR, BUT I HAVE A LOT OF INTEREST IN PHILOSOPHY AFTER TAKING THIS CLASS. HE IS VERY PASSIONATE AND IT IS A FAIRLY EASY CLASS OVERALL BUT SOME OF THE READINGS ARE KIND OF HARD. I ACTUALLY ENJOYED GOING TO CLASS EVERY TIME. WOULD DEF TAKE AGAIN!!!
Really cool guy, helpful and interesting
I did not know much about Bioethics beforehand but Chris actually made me want to learn more and more everyday. Although I received an A this class is not an easy A, you must apply yourself and be able to effectively communicate your opinion on the different topics.
This is a very comprehensive yet interesting class. Dr. Nagel is very elaborate and clear on covered topics in class. He explains everything in detail. However, he grades hard on his essays (5-6 total). It's hard to get an A for each essay. Remember to be clear and concise! I walked out of the class knowing how to write a well-argumentative essay.
Felt like I was taking a graduate course. Way too much work for a GE class. You have to be willing to do a lot of writing and reading to have a chance at a decent grade. Really nice guy and good teacher just has unrealistic class standards.
He is a very good teacher. Yes he is a hard grader but is very helpful. He does not just give you an easy A you have to be willing to work at it. We just had to write four papers and there is no textbook.
Pretty knowledgeable guy. The class was easy (no tests, no homework, etc) but he makes you write a lot. Occasionally went off into political rants about the 1% and stuff like that, but other than that he had nice, relaxed lectures and had a good system of group work that let you discuss with your peers and yet still learn what he wanted you to.
He encourages participation but doesn't call on people. He expects that you've read the material. He has the readings on BB to save money. Have to write 4 papers and one term paper. He wants to see that you've really thought about the information. Not an easy-breezy GE class.
I highly recommend you avoid this teacher at all costs. He is very unorganized with class notes, often created in class. These notes are deleted. The expected caliber of work for a GE course is outrageous. If you miss class you miss any announcements for the course he will not notify you of any thing quiz or assignment more than once.
Attendance isn't technically mandatory but you need to go in order to understand what's going on. You wont need to purchase a textbook but you will be reading at least one paper (varying 3-15 pages roughly) at least once a week. Quizzes aren't too hard if you pay attention in class. The three papers were the hardest thing, takes critical thinking!
Used textbook. Read about 8 philosophers. Interesting. He is very unique. liked the class. Response papers were not hard to do. Attending class gave notes on what to use in response papers. Midterm & Final were 1/2 (MC/T&F/ShortResponse) and other 1/2 Essay. Readings help immensely. Let us use our book for the two tests. He's reasonable and helpful
Class takes different approach to learning when it comes to course material and lectures. I found this twist very refreshing. Lectures and discussions were not super structured which was nice and gave the class a relaxing feel. Power point teaching is getting old and unsuccessful, he realizes this. Overall great instructor.
Although the material itself is somewhat difficult to comprehend, he is a good teacher with good intentions and a knack for making you perceive situations in a new light. The course did not involve too much work, and the work itself was fairly engaging. If you ask for help, you'll get it, and he is intimidating but great at what he does
Full disclosure. This class is hard and you will have to apply yourself. He grades in relation to your understanding of the core concepts and interpretation. This class will require you to understand, read and respond to material. However, Nagel does a great job at making the subject easier to understand by using real world concepts in a fun way.
He is actually a great professor, but if you can avoid this class do so. It is just additional stress that is not necessary. He assigns short essays which are easy and assigns two longer papers. The longer papers are very difficult. His instructions are not clear on those. On the first longer paper, a lot of people failed. Good luck!
Stay away, one of the worst !!!
Awful. Expects far too much for what the class is (3 units upper GE), and forget having a dissenting opinion. Has told students they are wrong, in class, in front of the whole class. Tells the class they lack critical thinking, yet somehow we've all made it this far. Tons of reading, vague essay prompts and no real lecture or discussion. Skip him.
Awesome professor!! Not a philosophy major and loved this class. You have to write 3 papers but they are not too bad. I would definitely recommend!
He is passionate about philosophy and you can tell by his lectures. Attendance is required for participation points, which involves sitting in groups and talking to other students. His grading on papers is critical and he is unclear of what he wants on the papers. Tough professor, but you walk away with more knowledge than you had before.
Chris Nagel is one of the best professors I've ever had. He mad me completely change my mind on school and how to teach in philio of ed. He has a phd and you can tell. he treated us as equals and let us structure the class. One essay and a few response papers. Taking another class with him nxt semester . Total stoner.
Be prepared to read at least 20 pages of material a week and write three papers which are the lump of what you are graded on for the whole class credit. unclear directions and guidance. May be a good class for someone thats ok with just barely passing without doing a lot of work but don't expect to get an A in this class..
I really appreciated his approach to the class. If you are not good at argumentative writing, don't take him. I rarely attended class but when I was there I contributed to the discussion immensely and made sure to read and understand the material before class. I was surprised to get an A in the class because I didn't work for it.
Philosophy can be a difficult subject for many, but this professor helps to break it down to simpler terms so that the students are able to understand it. He is funny, caring and gives informationall lectures. 10/10 would recommend. Inspired me to take more philosophy class even if it's not pertaining to my major
He's a nice professor but the class is just boring. Doing the reading will help in the class especially for the exams. I didn't really try and was surprised that I got a B.
Knows how to help better understand the things he goes over. Love how different he is as a person and how he thinks. Taking this class really changed the way I think. He likes to go over the textbook in class which is also helpful. The homework is within that same textbook. Truly understanding if you cant make it to class he knows things happen.
Overall great teacher! I honestly thought this class would be difficult. But, he enjoys teaching which results in good teaching. As long as you do your homework and study for the exams you'll be fine
This class was really interesting. I could see it being better in person, but the discussions had were still really interesting. Expect to write some papers and weekly assignments. Keep on top of the reading, it'll help you in the end.
He only assigns discussions and essays. He is an easy grader, so taking his class is not stressful at all. He also assigns no tests. Good professor overall.
There are 6 papers, weekly readings, and discussions. Great professor but the readings can be long or difficult to understand. The 4 short papers are easy but the 2 formal papers are graded harshly. The essays make up most of your grade. Most people did poorly on the first formal paper. You need to put a lot of effort but overall decent class.
I think that for a philosophy class, he was to objective of a grader. I received a mid range grade for a paper where Nagel claimed that I did not understand the author's point and I interpreted it wrong. I thought this was strange for a philosophy class where interpretation is subjective and it is more about making an argument than being right.
Do not take this professor, he is awful. He does not even provide lectures to help you understand the material and expects you to write essays like a professional after reading the articles he provides. He does not have compassion for anybody. Avoid him if possible.
He is an exceptional professor with extensive knowledge in his field. He demonstrates a genuine commitment to helping students and strives to be accommodating. He encourages self-directed learning and doesn't assume the role of a babysitter, which fosters personal growth and autonomy.
He is really rude, avoid this class just take something else. He does not give lectures about anything. He expects you to read the articles and then write an essay like an expert. I did all the work on time, read all the articles. everything was on time. He grades the essays super tough! Do not take this class!
Dr. Nagel is definitely on the tougher side. Sometimes paper criteria isn't clear so be sure to reach out & ask for help. Even if you think you understand it- SERIOUSLY. REACH OUT. meet with him via zoom so he can explain things to you properly & i'm 10000% confident you will understand and pass the papers. You have to put the work in. Good luck :)
The professor is terrible, and responses to our papers are delayed with heavy grading applied. Informs the student that there is no word count, and says 1000 word count should satisfy the essay. Upon turning in anything less will result in the paper being heavily marked down. He claims it is to make students write more, a strategy no one agrees.
Awful course honestly. Super tough grader for no reason, seriously though it is a general ed course. He is SUPER rude and opinionated. Calls out people for being wrong when it is a philosophy class and the concepts are subjective. Avoid him and his classes at all costs.
Worst professor ever if you not on his side on the papers you will be graded harshly.
Professor Nagel was amazing! I am not sure why he is rated so low. The grading criteria is clear and he is not a harsh grader. He gives amazing feedback and his supplementary lecture videos are helpful when trying to understand the material. This is not an incredibly easy class by any means but, if you put in the effort you will get a good grade.
Avoid this teacher by all means if you need an Ethics class. He is never on time with uploading the module, and he doesn't adjust the due date as compensation. You get an automatic zero on your paper for low word count, despite the fact he claims that the word count is not count. He will mark you down if he does not agree with your stance.
It's an easy class
Horrible, does not clarify instructions and expects you to agree to his stance even though it's a philosophy class.
Assignments aren't too bad, there are weekly discussion posts and three papers on books he provides PDFs. However, I wouldn't recommend taking him because he often disagrees with your opinions, even though it's a philosophy class. Feedback isn't clear; he just explains why you're wrong and then gives his perspective. Too much for a GE course.
Gives zero credit for your hard work and turning things on time. Will give you a failing grade for your essays I'm talking pages written and will fail you because he doesn't agree with your perspective. Gives no example what he is looking for. The worst experience so far at this school.
Philosophy is subjective. However, if Nagel doesn't agree with what you're saying, he'll take away a lot of points. You genuinely have to be on point to get 100/100 on your essays. I've ONLY been criticized for my work, not praised.
