Had instructor for chem lab (CH104/105/106) and found him very enjoyable and easy to understand. Can make the most complicated concept easy to understand. Always eager to provide help, and has an awesome attitude. RECOMMENDED!
An all out hottie.
Tried to get into his class but couldn't. Was very friendly, helpful, and nice to look at. Yes, he's a hottie. Too bad I've got Emme instead of him.
such a great profesor, always helpful, creates an atmosphere where everyone can learn and enjoys learning in the meantime. Definitely reccomend! :-)
This is the hardest class. He gives you 55 mins to finish an exam that is 4 pages long of problem solving. He grades extremely hard & 1/2 the class gets F's on every exam so far. Very nice teacher but expectations are VERY HIGH.
SO HARD!!! Prepare to feel stupid in there. Labs are fun... teacher is nice... grading so hard! He figures why pay for an easy class and wants us to learn. He is not very clear reguarding hw due dates. Nice guy tho
I have not had an instructor that is so unable to create a test that can be finished in the class time. We have been constantly behind to the point we had to skip a chapter in 221 and will lose one in 222 as well.
He teaches like a high school teacher, telling you exactly what to take notes on, and goes off on random things. If you have to take his class be the suck up because he has a fudge factor on every assignment and atleast 5% of your grade in the end is completely up to him.
He is more than willing to help you in anyway he can. He doesn't give out answers though because he wants you to learn and retain the material. Although a little frustrating at times, this is a good thing. Very nice.
This guy has no business being a teacher. He teaches the easy stuff by reading a Power Point presentation, then tests on the hard stuff in the book that he can't, or won't explain. Writes a 3 hour test for a 50 minute period.
This guy was obviously absent from class when they taught how to write a test. When only 5% of the class completes a test in the allotted time, the instructor should at least get a clue. Not this guy.
Good teacher, keeps up well with students and really cares about the good of the students also.
Took these as 2 5-wk classes back to back, and still got "A"s. Classes are very difficult, but he makes himself readily available for extra help. He grades assignments and returns them promptly, so you know where you stand. Highly recommend!

he has high expectations but if you do the homework and make sure you understand the material, you will pass the class. Willing to help with anything you dont understand. Overall good guy
Boy there are some wimpy raters here. This isn't High school. This is chemistry folks. Yeah, it's hard. Chris does a great job preparing you for University level. He works hard to help students do the best they can, but he won't baby you. You'll have to read the chapters 2-3X, ask questions and apply yourself ~15-20 hrs/wk if you want to do well.
Very good teacher. If you want to get a good grade he will try his hardest to help you understand what is going on. It's really up to the student however, as to how well he/she is going to do
Interesting class, alot of information to take in in only one term. Chris was very helpful and friendly and labs where alot of fun. VERY hard tests! Fair grader.
As long as you do your best on the homework and review before the exams and tests, you will do fine. He is very helpful when you have trouble understanding a concept. Just ask and he will try his best to help you understand. You will need to STUDY to do well. No one ever said that chemistry is easy. It was tough, but he was a good teacehr.
personally i dont think hes a very helpful teacher wheni didnt understand something he told me to go back and read it in the book... which i already did i wouldnt ask for help if i didnt read the book first. hes a nice guy but not a helpful teacher in my experience
Need to study book.
He is a fair teach, I took 104 & 105, soon to be 106. Chemistry is hard, this class is hard! Makes the class interesting and labs fun, I would take classes with him again. Most of your grad depends on the exams. He's not so bad to look at either!
I had Chris for lab and a separate instructor for lecture. He was always extremely helpful when I didn't understand something. He even taught a lot of little tricks to help remember things and met the whole class for extra study sessions before exams.
I had him for lab and I really liked him. He was very helpful with explaining stuff.
He was pretty hard, but Chemistry is a hard class. I would say that overall if you study and put the time that is required in this class you should do fine! Helped whereever he could, but I took it online so the help we got was limited.
He tried a new teaching style this term. It was not horrible, but I don't think he got the results he was shooting for because it somewhat backfired. Hes very clear when you tell him to be, but he wanted everyone to teach themselves. He is a hott mamma!
He gives off the vibe he is too good to teach chemistry.
I'll miss class with him. He was amazingly patient with my frequent questions, very flexible with my late assignments, quick with grading, and always prepared for class. It wasn't easy, but I learned very much.
I liked him
I took this class online so it was pretty much the textbook and I. He answers questions, provides feedback, and has a positive attitude. No reason you should not succeed.
great and helpful teacher, hard grader
great and helpful teacher, hard grader, but definitely learning
great teacher, hard grader, am taking the course online, but helpful at lab
Excellent teacher; very professional, very knowlegeable, clear, concise, helpful, patient, nice, and good-looking. He will give you opportunities to succeed, and you will learn a lot, but the material and tests are extremely hard. Either be a genius or be willing to work your guts out.
Took CH104 and 105 with him online. HATED every second of it. Tried my hardest to get A's and couldn't. He grades so HARD and expects you to teach yourself. Hated the online website that we had to use. He's nice enough- just a really bad teacher that is not helpful at all!
He is nota good teahcer at all. doesn't explain himself well, nouse of the text book almost atll. He talks to you like you are stupid when you ask questions. yes CHM is hard but it sure does help whne the instructor is doing his job. Very hard on grading, picks his favorite students. Hated his class completely.
He gave alot of work, but is very helpful. He tries to help you understand and is very good about responding to questions. I took him as an online class. I was so sad when I didn't need to take his class anymore. He was one of the best professors I have ever had.
seems to give scores that he thinks you should earn rather than what you really did earn. grades diffenrently (one student gets a question right while another misses it with the same answer)/plays favorites a little bit
Very Hard teacher. Definately plays favorites, doesnt not cover material very well at all. He needs to put more attention into difficult concepts and not definitions. Lab instructions are ridiculous, I've left many times very stressed and tense. He made me hate chemistry and love physics. I'll be happy when Im done with him.
Went to him with specif question and He didnt help really difficult teacher to deal with
He wasn't helpful at all and lectured us like we were still in high school about paying attention in class. If you ask him for help he treats you like your stupid. So if you plan to take his class, make sure your ready to teach your self everything.
Most things people are saying are true. He's nice, but really hard. He's definitely an "all out hottie" haha but he's really difficult. He seems like he plays favorites,(for instance I have NO IDEA how I passed the first term)... But he made me hate chemistry and terrified of taking more sciences...Be sure to read chapters and do practice problems!
A nice person but a horrible teacher. Grades very hard, even a little unfairly at times. Makes lab procedures uncomprehensible, doesn't explain assignments very well. Plays favorites, so if you are one of the people in front of class with your hand in the air yelling "oh oh pick me" all the time you'll do well, if not, your grade will suffer.
Basically, a self-tought course. Know that your textbook will become your new bff. In this class there are NO reviews, homework is gone over in the following class after due date, and lecture never takes place. Favorites are played, so pray you're one of them. Should your grade not look right to you,do question him!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken, mostly due to the subject but he didn't help much either. He is a nice guy, but not very clear, expects you to know chem already and doesn't provide very helpful study guides for tests. I thought his tests were hard but the ACS final at the end was a nightmare. Highly recommend lower chem classes first!
Took all three advanced chemistry classes (221-223) for science major. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY! Prof was unclear about most topics so reading/practice questions took up majority of my after-school study time. He was willing to help but he only asked rhetorical questions. Looking for 4-year university with GOOD chemistry teachers!!!!
Awesome Teacher! Hardest class I've ever taken but he was so helpful I'm very thankful. The subject is hard and you have to study a lot especially with no background. Definitely recommend taking a lower level class first. Helps to read book before class and do all homework as assigned. Know your stuff for ACS exam - not much thinking time for it.
Useless as a teacher. I went to him for help on several occasions and he never helped me. He would answer my question with a question. Chemistry is a hard class but he was useless as a teacher. Would never take his class again. I don't know how he is still a teacher here he is horrible.
this class will successfully kick your butt if you don't go to class or read the text. study like crazy and take lots of notes. He loves the subject and makes it interesting though. He is very approachable and has great office hours
Super cool, and super hottie! He really cares about his students and how they learn.
He was the worst teacher I ever had at Chemeketa. Useless as a teacher, I had to learn everything on my own.
I really like him, I think he's really nice, but not really a great teacher, he's helpful if you ask in class, but not when you go to his office. Test questions are much much harder than the homework, but it was very interesting after all. You really to study hard, I'm a natural A student (with no study effort) and I barely got B's in his class.
This is the only chemeketa class I got a grade higher than 100% so A+. On the ACS exam, I ranged in the 97 percentile or higher. I have barely touched the book after the first two weeks. The teachers clear, concise, and brief. The previous commentors rely way too much on the teacher. Seriously, you guys are in college. Spend the time to read.
I had him for all three terms. Class is challenging and requires you to invest a lot of time into actually doing the readings and HW, lectures are hard to understand otherwise. He is easily approachable. You get two attempts on each online quiz.
Chris is an EXCELLENT instructor. I took his online course through the summer, and it was a breeze.
Chis is an awesome teacher. It's super important that you go to the lectures and take good notes, and read your text before class. I think he explains things very well and is very passionate about chemistry. If you put in the effort, you'll get a good grade and you also get two tries on the quizzes. Exams are HARD.
Chris seems like a nice guy but I didn't find him very helpful when it counts. Lecture was fine and the online work was fine. When it came to labs I felt the connections between the labs and the lectures weren't made clear and a lot of people were confused all the time. I feel I put more than 5 credits worth of work in.
His lectures are wonderful, he's always available and eager to help. The class is easy for me, but the material is hard for most. Utilize his office hours--he's eager to help you succeed.
Nelson is a great teacher! He made one of the most difficult subjects bearable for me. I didn't do too great grade wise, for science is not really my thing, but I really did learn a lot from him. If you pay attention and do the work, you'll be fine. His tests are straight forward and he is very helpful, especially during office hours.
Chris is a wonderful instructor that is very helpful. He is very friendly and willing to help during office hours. I strongly recommend Chris for any one taking General Chemistry.
Chris is an excellent chemistry teacher!! Very helpful, and will listen to any questions.
This is a hard class! Chris will be there to help, but only if you ask the right way or on your own time. Prepare to have homework every night on top of labs and tests. You need to study if you want to pass this class.
I enjoyed this hybrid class with Chris. Some tips for the hybrid class: Participation counts, so check the discussion online EVERY day, and post at least once a week for easy points. Take your time on the online quizzes, they are open book, so they have the potential of being easy points. Study your quizzes and homework for the mid-tems and finals.
Don't mistake him for a bad teacher because the course is hard. His lectures are SUPER EFFECTIVE. He gives weekly quizzes and there are weekly labs that require some work. He has standard tests and is generous with partial points on the written problems. Homework is online. Use Chemeketa's tutoring center (its free) if you need additional help!
He is the best instructor I've had at Chemeketa. I have never had an instructor that is good at what he does and enjoys helping his students and goes the extra mile. Any one that has failed is because they are not willing to put in all the effort. it is a very difficult subject, but he is always available and willing to help his students.
Chris is one of the best teachers I've ever had! Yes, the course is difficult, his tests are challenging, and he expects a great amount of effort from his students but he's just trying to prepare us for the ACS exam we have to take at the end of the year. He doesn't answer your questions directly but instead he will guide you to the correct answers
Best instructor I have ever had. This series is difficult and requires A LOT of work. But I have no doubt that I would not have done nearly so well had it not been for the quality of teaching. This guy knows how to explain difficult concepts in a way that is understandable. If you really want to learn chemistry, this is your guy.
Chris is a great Chem teacher! This class is really hard and he is good at explaining difficult concepts, and he doesn't give you the answer straight up, he makes you use your brain to figure it out, but he helps you reach the answer. He quizzes you a lot which is great! Helps understanding and test-taking a lot easier. I loved him!
Chris is helpful everything is great about his class, just that he grades pretty hard on everything, be prepared to work!
Chris is a great teacher, he explains things very well and is relaxed and understanding. His class is not that easy, so if you are lazy, don't take it, you will most likely get a bad grade. You get from this class what you put into it.
Chris is a great teacher, but this class is not easy, he makes you really work for your grade.
Well, This class was definitely a struggle. Chris is an awesome teacher, but there isn't much mercy when it comes to grading. You have to put your work into it and make sure you study hard for the exams. May i say, good luck.
I have never worked so hard in a class as in Chris's class. After transferring from Chemeketa to OSU and switching my major I still reminisce and remain thankful for having Chris as professor. Chris Nelson was definitely the best part of the 1 year I spent at Chemeketa! Read your book! Do your homework! Think critically! Enjoy!
Hardest class I have ever taken & toughest grader. The lectures are a tad confusing and Chris grades labs HARD. The homework online in OWL is easy but there is tons of it, don't save it until before the test. Tests are about 90% of your grade so make sure to study SUPER hard and spend a few hours perfecting your lab or else your grade will tank!
He knows his stuff, if you do your work you should be just fine! Class isn't 'mandatory' but is helpful and will get you through the class passing.
He always incourages asking questions and will help you when ever you need it. This class is NOT easy, you will have to put a lot time into it , but you will learn so much once its over
Very hard. Dont bother asking question because he will just answer with another question making you feel even more confused. Impossible to get an A since class average for this class was barely a C. Grades homework very tough and exams make up half your grade. Makes learning chemistry impossible because your so stressed about grades.
Hardest grader at CCC. Average multiple choice score on test for the CLASS was 2390! Tests are tricky. Make sure to spend a few hours on your lab, in our class he chose which lab book to grade. Make sure to check your lab partners work too or you might fail!
This guy was good and tough too!
I had to take 106 for a better grade for my program. I hadn't taken chemistry in over 8 years, I didn't remember anything that had happened in the first two courses. He was a great teacher because I got through the third course pretty much without knowing any of the stuff from the first two.
Chris is an awesome person and great teacher. But, if you aren't pre-med or a chemistry major, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Youre more worried about passing than the actual topic. 60% of your grade is tests, expect 6-8 hrs on lab reports every week. Weekly quizzes, and little to no curve on D' average test scores. Chemistry isnt easy but there are better profs
SUPER TOUGH GRADER. If you plan on getting a passing grade, dont take his class. Doesn't even give enough time to finish the final. Average grade is a D. You will spend HOURS on homework and labs just to receive a D or F on them. Not worth your time. Would NOT recommend to anyone wanting to pass the chemistry series.
I wish all my teachers were as good at lectures as Chris.
Chris is amazing! He is ready to answer any question you may have about Chemistry. He has very high expectations and rarely will give full credit for assignments. He's really tough, but really helpful. I feel that Chris has prepared me well for future science courses. You cannot slack or your grade will quickly tank.
Do NOT take Chris's class. Worst chemistry teacher I've had. Grades way too hard, with no sympathy at all. Be prepared for lots of stress, tons of work, and low grades.
He's an amazing teacher who teaches a hard subject very well. He expects involvement in lecture, and calls out students to answer questions. You will be fine in lecture if you stay caught up/ahead with the online homework questions, and the chapter readings. He is a tough but straightforward and fair teacher. I highly recommend him.
He loves Chemistry and it shows! He is not easy. Some questions on quizzes can seem like tricks but they are a test to see if you understand concepts or have done your reading. Use your resources! Mr. Nelson will tell you from day one that he's not there to baby you and his job is to prepare you for other courses and jobs. Great Teacher!
Chris demands a lot from his students but I think it prepares you for university level classes. His is not an easy class to pass, lots of quizzes, homework, lab reports. Make sure you do all the reading before you come to class so that when you get called on, you can answer intelligently. He is a hard grader so put in the time, effort, ask questions
Loads of homework, spend hours on labs. test make up the majority of your grade. I spent more time being stressed about passing, I couldn't focus on learning anything. He moves way to fast, and if you ask questions he makes you feel like a complete moron. Didn't miss one class, lab or test and still got a D!
Chris really cares about his students. He wants everyone to succeed, and if you work hard in his class you will do well.
Chris lays everything out clearly in the syllabus. There are no pop quizzes. There is one quiz a week on each chapter. Exams are multiple choice with questions exactly like those in quizzes. Labs are the same as in every other 104/5 class. Homework on the masteringchemistry online gives great feedback and many chances to get a ? right
If you have a strong math background and took chemistry in high school you'll do fine. His tests are tough. He says he doesn't try to trick you on the tests, but it sure feels like it. If you can keep up you will be well prepared for advanced chem and engineering classes. If you want a good grade then sign up for a different prof
The workload is what to be expected from this level of class with weekly lab reports that are due a few days (1 day sometimes) after the lab has been completed. He is there for you to ask all of the questions you need to even if you just see him passing in the hall, he will answer. If you have had chemistry before that will definitely help out!
I lucked out with Chris, CH105 Fall'17 was a small class of 10 people so we had a lot more face time and interactions with him. He is a great teacher, his lectures are clear and he takes it slow enough for everyone to keep up with notes. It's a tough class and you have to study. Chris is readily available to answer e-mails in the evening with Q's.
If you enjoy taking multiple choice tests, this professor is not for you. Very minimal extra credit options. Lots of online homework on MasteringChem, and you really need to understand the material to take the tests. I enjoyed the lectures, he is passionate about us learning and REALLY engaging in class. Also, he's whiling to meet outside of class.
This was one of my hardest classes, because I'm not that great or in love with chemistry. I tried my hardest and studied for hours just to get the grade I needed. Many students in the class did pass with B+. Ways to pass: read everything, practice concepts, study groups, take your own notes, ask questions, no procrastination, & apply yourself.
Chris is an amazing prof and lectures are enjoyable. He knows his stuff. Chemistry is a hard subject, but with Chris it's doable. You need to attend every lecture and do all the readings or you will fall behind quickly. He grades very fairly, and honestly seems to care about his students.
I enjoyed chemistry but not with this teacher. Lecture was literally him saying here's a review of everything you should already know and of taught yourself. Nice guy but chemistry is a hard subject and he didnt teach it well.
Chris knows his stuff however, he is a really tough grader on labs and speeds through lecture. I liked how he did problems during lecture to explain the concept but I would not recommend taking him if you're slow at algebra or using a calculator. Additionally you need to read the entire chapter before lecture in order to understand whats going on.
I did not like him at all. He would ask questions on examples in class and if you didn't know, he would embarrass you and just waited until you gave an answer whether you knew or not. He made us stop during our final to turn them in when 80% of our class was not done and he said that it wouldn't count towards our grade, but it did.
Professor Chris is by far one of the best professors at Chemeketa. He might be a bit harder but his teaching style will for sure prepare you for the future. If you really want to get you dollars worth for your education then I recommend that you take his course. I would take him again if I could. He is always willing to help and he good at replying
I took Chris for all three terms of the 200 level Chemistry. Pros: He is a great guy, funny, and definitely knows his stuff. Cons: Grades Difficult on labs, (especially later in year) , and tests are not easy. He expects a lot and to work hard. All in all if you want to learn and go on to Organic Chem, take Chris. If not take Kerry.
I loved having Chris as a professor. He does grade pretty hard, but by the end of the three terms, I felt much more prepared to continue on in chemistry classes (I am a chem major). He is very accessible outside of class; you can almost always find him in his office and he is always happy to help, so long as you are actually interested in learning.
Chemistry is a hard enough class without trick questions and new material on quizzes. As a student who studies often and hard, I was not setup for success in this class.
I took his course during the pandemic and he is amazing. He is a critical grader during labs but he gives great feedback and truly wants you to succeed in class. Exams may be somewhat difficult but if you study and ask for help during review it shouldn't be too bad.
Chris is an excellent professor. He gives good advice and is always there to help. Expect to be called on by name to answer a question at least once a week. Assuming, that is, you get him during a non-quarantine semester. Friendly, helpful, insightful, and very laid back.
I am now in nursing and I remember taking this course by Mr. Nelson. I thought it was challenging and now I am thankful that he did not give into pressure from students to lighten the load. You need every bit of information he is teaching to advance as a nurse or physician. He teaches it well, so study to understand.
If you take questions literally do not take this class. It's weird to see someone who gets an A from a professor complain, but Chris will nitpick your grade. Not a hard class, but If he asks what is the answer to x question he will mark you down and say that you didn't explain y even though y was not being asked about. Nice guy but not very clear.
Cool guy, I would happily take his class again. The last lab I had in his class he and I ended up talking about stocks while I was waiting. Intelligent man, intelligent conversation.
I really enjoyed Chris!!! If I had to take more chemistry classes he would be the first prof I would look for. Hes very insightful and is always there to answer Qs and see you succeed. Exams are hard but if you study and ask Qs you will do fine. I was scared to take a chem class and now I want to take another. Hes awesome!!!!
Nelson was a very tough grader but was fair. He gives you multiple, engaging opportunities to learn tougher content. He does not give out extra credit and grades mostly based on tests. This made the class very difficult but I learned a lot in the class.
Most kind and caring professor you will ever have. Will answer any questions you have and will make sure you are understanding the material. Admits his own mistakes. Very forgiving grader. Caters to different student strengths and weaknesses. Very chill and funny a well. Listens to his student feedback.
It's tough content, but he really cares about your ability to learn and will help you every, every time you ask. The constant assignments keep you from getting behind, but are a pain. If you want to REALLY understand chemistry- go with this professor.
Really enjoyed the interest he has in his students understanding. Makes sure everyone is caught up in lectures (which are just a helpful review of the reading). Science teachers usually boil down to 1 of 2 styles: Careless/Smart, Babysitters with shallow knowledge. Prof Nelson was probably the best combination of smart and considerate ive ever had.
I prefer to learn in plain speech and he is very knowledgeable almost too knowledgeable if you aren't articulate in science talk. I feel like if you learn mainly from lectures he may not be the best fit. If you are a visual learner he is excellent and has very detailed PowerPoints.
Nelson was the best teacher I have ever had. I took 201 as my first chemistry class, and it was difficult to say the least. He was always willing to sit down with me and explain the material in different ways until I could understand. I could tell he cared deeply about teaching and his students. I won't forget him, I highly recommend.
As difficult as chemistry was for me as a topic, Chris loved helping students. He went above and beyond to make sure everyone understood what was going on. He welcomed questions and was readily available outside of normal office hours. He makes great analogies, make pictures, find websites with simulations, or videos that will help you if you ask!
Chris Nelson was a great professor. Chemistry is an overall tough class but the professor has great detailed PowerPoints and is very accessible outside of class. He responds to emails in a timely matter and is always willing to help. Attendance required. Taking clear notes and asking questions when needed will help you succeed.
Very caring about learning and providing the best environment for that. Be ready to read the textbook and watch the videos before the lecture. Chemistry is a tough subject and a lot more time will be spent studying outside of class. But this is the best instructor for that, he truly cares that you understand the material.
Chris is an extremely kind professor who cares greatly if his students are doing well. Chris would help me for hours in his office hours if I ever needed. I wish I could take more classes with him.
Do not take Chris if you want a good grade. He is very picky and expects us to do everything as if this was an advanced chemistry course. He will nitpick at anything in order to not give you a good grade when he can't even teach the material properly. I recommend any other chem professor instead.
Knows a lot about the subject and wants students to ask questions when confused.
Professor Nelson is incredibly helpful and passionate about student success. The course is challenging, but using unstuck AI alongside the textbook and lectures really helped me stay on top of the material.
Chris is an awesome professor at CCC. Although chemistry is supposed to be a harder course, I feel like he really tried to explain the material to the students in a way that they understood. He makes sure to give extra credit and makes the in-person labs fun.
Chris is an amazing teacher and cares about his students. Honestly one of the great science teachers that you can tell really cares about his subject. He is kind when instructing and corrects students without putting down. The hybrid class I took did require a lot of outside work but if you put in the work you will be recognized.
Homework system is awful, and tests are worth 70% of your grade and you're not allowed any notes for quizzes or exams. One of the last tests had a 54% grade average for the class and he blames most math based problems on students putting it into their calculator wrong without even checking. We have to teach ourselves with the textbook instead.
