Very nice. Video tapes all lecture and put online for you to view. Don't even have to go to class!
omg one of the worst psych "professors" (he's a grad student) in the department. rambles, talks in circles, totally unclear. class was absolutely painful.
Chris is a very clear teacher. The videos of the class are extremely helpful in studying at home. The exams are fair. Lots of essays but if you do your studying, you will do well. I have taken 2 of his classes and will be in a third next semester.
Clear, organized, and very approachable.
He is one of the best psych professors I've had, you can tell he is very knowledgable and passionate..he has done a lot of interesting research and always has good examples and stories..very nice and understanding too
He's such a nice guy and the class is really simple. Just read the textbook and go over the lectures. He's very clear and obviously loves what he's doing.
Very approachable guy. He really makes an effort to get to know his students by name. Very flexible when it comes to tests. Stresses the importance of learning over just receiving a good grade. He's a great guy, and if your interested in psych, i recommend this class!
Awesome professor! Take this class!
I found this class quite challenging. Was not really clear to me what was important and not. Eventhough I did not do well in the class, the class was enjoyable and interesting.
Chris is a great professor. He kept class interesting and as long as you paid attention in lecture you did fine. Was very clear and easy to understand in lecture.
Uggghhhh. Prepare to be bored out of your ind for 1hour and 15min a day if you take PSY181. He repeats himself over and over, talks in a monotone voice, and paces back and forth. He clearly knows the material, but he presents even the most interesting of theories in a way that makes you wish you were anywhere but that lecture hall.
He gives hard tests for a psych class. All the info you need for this class is on the powerpoints, and he records and posts his lectures on blackboard. He's a fair teacher
this class is fine, but extremely boring. you learn the same thing every lecture, just with slight variation. its all memorization and the true/false is really obnoxious.
So he uses really bad syntax and talks too much, but other than that, great guy. You don't have to do the readings and the tests are easy
Really clear and helpful, tries to benefit student as much as he can.
Although his speech becomes difficult to understand at some points, he is a very nice guy and a very knowledgeable teacher. Definitely better than most.
Niemiec was a great professor. You could definitely tell that he had prepared his lectures well. In addition, he video taped all of his lectures, so if you missed class, you could watch the lecture you missed. Tests were very easy; just 50 multiple choice questions. If you reviewed his lectures, you would do fine.
He was clear and talked slowly enough, so note-taking was a breeze. He even posted the slides beforehand and videos of lectures after class. The tests were incredibly easy (50 multiple choice) but I found that there were always at least a few vague questions. However I was bothered by Niemiec's speaking. Something about his syntax was irritating!
Everything about this class is very clear. He gives you the powerpoints beforehand and if you study those, your notes from class, and the bolded terms from the text you'll get an A no problem. Coming to class will really help but you could get most of the info from the text if you wanted. Overall a great course!
Take this class. Tests are easy and based entirely off of lectures, which he records and puts on itunes.
Easy test, boring lecture but very clear and to the point
lectures are extremely interesting, tests are easy multiple choices, no need to get the textbook at all. He records all his lectures and they are available on iTunes, so you can study at home without going to classes. very nice guy, my favorite prof in the psy department! strongly recommand
He is mad cool. Really easy class. Pretty interesting. No need to buy text book.
Awful class, great professor. He's funny and entertaining. Definitely a great speaker. His exams have no surprises or trick questions. He even posts lectures online. Great guy.
Very boring class and very boring lectures! But overall, I would take this class because it is an easy A as long as you go to class and memorize every slide. The final is not comprehensive. Four exams about 5-6 lectures each. You just have to memorize all the lectures and the class should be easy for you! Great class for freshman!
Niemiec is a strong lecturer - very articulate, clear and open to questions. The textbook is not necessary (all pertinent info is covered in class) and the exams are EXTREMELY easy, as long as you attend lecture and put in a little extra studying time.
People rating Prof. Niemiec's courses as easy or boring have not taken any of his upper level classes where he truly shines. Good speaker, if a tad bit sarcastic at times, and a great professor to boot. Very knowledgeable in material and helpful at the same time. Lectures are online, but go to class - saves you a lot of trouble in the long run.
Good lecturer, seems to have powerpoints memorized. Posts recordings online of class in case you miss something, which is quite helpful. Always willing to answer questions for clarity. Definitely knows his stuff
Niemiec is an awesome lecturer. Speaks very clearly, really well-prepared, knows his stuff. Definitely recommend downloading the powerpoints before class and taking notes on your laptop. Exams are multiple choice and non-cumulative - easy if you study. There are two short papers that are pretty painless. If you like psych this is a great class
Prof. Niemiec is a great professor and clearly loves what he does. His lectures a crystal clear and he records them in case you missed anything. He also is very reasonable with tests and grading. It seems that it would be very hard to fail even if you were trying to. All in all, Prof. Niemiec comes highly recommended.
Chris is awesome (prefers to be called chris as opposed to Professor Niemiec). Very funny and keeps class very interesting. If you study for the test and now how the stuff relates you will get an A. No final exam which was huge
Awesome guy and enjoyable class.
He does not use the text books. Tests are based on what he says in class. He records his lectures and has them (and his powerpoints) available online. However, for the tests, he wants you to memorize EVERYTHING he's ever said and use his words. Paraphrasing the concepts in your own words won't get you any points.
He was a terrible teacher who never used the textbook. His test was just based on memorizing his lectures.
Tons of philosophical theory in this class, which can be pretty dry. Memorize absolutely everything for the exams and be ready to spit it back up verbatim in the short answer section. MC is pretty easy. Its sad because Niemiecs an awesome prof and the material in this class is just terrible so he'll probably get an undeserved bad rep.
Niemiec is very passionate, though his lectures may drag and lack in organization sometimes. He is however a great lecturer and tests are easy if you pay attention during lecture.
Chris is a great, and in my opinion the best, professor in the psych department! He leads all of his classes from an SDT perspective so you have a lot of choice regarding the class and he is extremely open to feedback. You will not only love Chris, but also the class material! He is also a very approachable professor
Chris is a great lecturer. The points are clear and straightforward. The videos are posted on blackboard so you can choose to learn at dorm. I register his PSY262 for next semester.
Chris' freshman psych class was one of my favorites. He gives you every opportunity to succeed (putting noteslecture recordings online, test review sessions, and make-up tests), but his lectures are also fun and engaging. Even though I could skip class I never wanted to because it was always fun.
He's a good professor overall, but lectures were SO FREAKING BORING. Sometimes he would say something hilarious and we would wake up, but overall he just read the slides. "turn now to another consideration" is burned into my brain. But the class was a typical intro course. Nothing too hard.
If you want any easy A, take this class. You get out of it what you put in, but he presents it as a game to figure out what's on the exam, not about learning the concepts. It was interesting however, and it was a good first exposure to psychology.
Tests are super easy, and you do not need to show up for classes to get an A. However, he recited the lecture and it's boring and rigid. The classes are good for non-psych majors with mere interests, but for people who wish a deeper career in the area, it's not as helpful.
The class is a joke, and I kind of hate it. Psych itself is really interesting though, but the class isn't about learning psych, it's about figuring out what's on the exam. The lectures are recorded, it's a walk in the park.
Chris Niemiec is the man take his class it's very straight forward and not hard at all. He really cares about his students and the class is an interesting, easy class to make life easier first semester freshmen year. All his students love him.
Easiest class ever.
Easy class to pass. Just have to memorize and you're fine. The SONA extra credit is also helpful.
Really great lecture, does a good job of making things interesting. The only grades are the 4 tests, but they are all 50 multiple choice and fairly easy. He does assign the textbook, but you really don't need it and you don't need to read it.
Very straightforward class. The exam questions come from all of his online lectures and are factual in nature. A lot of different personality theories in this course but most of them were covered briefly in his psy 101 class too.
Well the class was divided into an online module version and an out of class discussion session. The modules are watched at our own pace, but it's a ton of material and it took me three hours worth of time to note everything. The out of class discussion was useless, as it didn't really add to anything. The exams were very fair.
This class was one my favorites throughout all of college. Niemiec makes his classes so that if you come to the required discussion sessions/recitations, do the required work, and study for his exams, you will get an A. His tests and assignments are super fair and the materials are interesting. He is also very relaxed and seems to love his job.
Chris is the GOAT. As long as you take notes on everything he says in class and study off of that the night before the exam, you will get at least a B+.
Professor Niemic was such a cool guy and showed a lot of passion in what he taught. The class topics were really interesting and there was not a lot of work. As long as you understood the main points of his lectures and show up to the mini-courses, you should get an A.
He's my favorite prof that I've ever had. He wants you to want to learn, and doesn't force anything (he talks frequently about his hatred of exams). He talks a lot about his family and how the material applies to life, which is great. He makes you feel like a person, not just a student. All his lectures are put online as well. 10/10!
This was a very easy class. Tests were simple, mostly you just have to memorize vocabulary. However, his recorded lectures were impersonal, and they were incredibly boring. The discussion response papers were not graded efficiently. By the time I submitted the 6th, I had only received feedback on two. I will be avoiding Chris' classes in the future
Make sure you do the extra credit. I think a lot of people go in expecting an easy A. Well let me just tell you that the average exam grade was usually a low to mid B. Trust me, there are plenty of people getting below an A- in that class. Make sure you actually take notes and everything. It's not too difficult, but I wouldn't say an easy A
He records his lecture so attendance is not mandatory. Overall, I thought the class was very easy. Exams are multiple choice. Make sure you study all your notes and memorize them. Even though I thought the class was easy, I did not do extremely well on all the exams so make sure to do the extra credit which will bump up your grade say from B+ to A-
This man is the greatest teacher i have ever had. I love him so much. he makes the class fun, he's organized and he is just an amazing prof all over
Fun and interesting lectures, but not an easy A class. You'll do well if you're good at specific multiple choice questions. Class seems too big for him to care about his students. Not sure if he's too useful for specific/personal questions...
If you study (which you should), you'll be just fine. He is a charismatic professor who cares about his students and makes lectures interesting, I would definitely take again!
Very multiple choice test heavy, which can be a good thing. Lectures are amazing.
He is really fun and makes the lectures entertaining, I didn't do amazingly in the class because I struggle with multiple choice and there was soooo much content but he is a really good professor and really good at explaining.
Would definitely take this class again, Chris was an incredible Professor and the course was interesting.
Had a really bad experience with the first essays in recitation, where everyone got a fifty percent or below because the grads and undergrads were saying different things about the grading criteria. Niemiec's response to this was saying that our grades don't matter as much compared to the material we learn in class.
He may be fun but the lecture halls are too big for him to actually care about you and your struggles in his class
Psych is a lot of common sense and especially in this intro class, so if you've got your head on straight you'll definitely pass and probably do well without too much effort. Don't bother getting the textbook, only his lectures matter. He is entertaining, posts lectures online, but going to class is worthwhile bc he's funny.
The structure of this class was very different than any other psych class I had taken. It was nice to be able to watch the modules on your own time and I found my discussion group helpful. Chris is a great guy and his videos were very straight forward, but I think for this course in particular, you interact with the TAs way more.
Chris is a great professor and a cool person. He is very interactive with the students on class, and he always keeps the lecture exciting. The material is easy and all tests were multiple choice. Mini courses outside of lecture were also interesting and were easy points towards your grade.
He is a good professor who would record his own lecture and post after the class. The exams are always covered in the lectures. So be prepared for reviewing the videos before the exam.
Literally just show up for a good time, super great personality, and entertaining lectures.
Chris is a really inspiring lecturer that'll change your life for the better. Learning about motivation is really important and interesting, even to a non-psychology student. The class is really easy if you do all the papers and attend the lectures (they're recorded too!). I would take Niemiec again in a heartbeat
taking notes for his recorded lectures were hard for me because he covers a lot, so attending in-person was a must for me. Plus, I liked going to his lectures because it's always a good time. Exams are straight memorization from the lectures because it's multiple choice. Great and easygoing guy. If you're going to take PSY 101, take him!
Almost all of the grading is based on the exams which can contain very obscurely-formatted questions a lot of the time. All of the lectures are pre-recorded so you can watch them when you like but you must watch them if you want to pass the exams. You're gonna be talked at for 2.5 hours every week and you need to scribble down notes. Very boring.
Chris is awesome, especially considering the online format because of COVID. Grade is based on a few 50 question multiple choice tests w/ explanation, open note. Tests are easy, if you watch the lectures. Also, you have attend some mini-courses taught by the TA. Overall a positive low-stress class to take with some interesting material.
grading was super late and i had written half of the essays before one was graded. weekly in person recitations and zoom workshops. intensely boring lectures. i felt like i was just regurgitating information for a grade.
Amazing guy! Clearly passionate, and so will you be after you take his classes!
Compassionate. Supportive. Compelling lecturer. Lots of theoretical knowledge. The readings and classes are 110% worth your time and effort. Manageable workload.
For intro psych, the tests are multiple-choice which is a real blessing. His lectures are straight forward and he tells personal stories which helps keep students engaged. He's funny and laid back. I would recommend this to everyone, especially pre-meds.
I know that PSYC101 typically an easy course, but I guess the hard part about this one was the lack of grades being put in. Most exams happened to be when I had exams for engineering or papers for writing due, so it was hard to find time to study for an elective. I did pretty well with minimal studying and there is extra credit and mini courses.
Chris is essentially everything you want for a professor, especially for an introductory class. He is well spoken, funny, and he makes the material as interesting and engaging as possible. The classes were lecture heavy but I think that's more a result of the psych 101 material itself.
Take him, easy/funny - you dont have to show up to class to get A, he records all lectures. 4 multiple choice tests worth 50 points each. 2 mini courses offered by TAs (attendance and a small asaignments to do- you choose the course) worth 25 points each. 2 discussion/debate session worth 2 points each (for showing up) - can get extra credit
He was a pretty awesome lecturer. He grades based off of tests (not cumulative) and mini courses led by TAs. The mini courses are super interesting. Easy class but also informational!
Prof. Niemiec is very passionate and knowledgeable in what he teaches. Lectures are very engaging and informative. The materials in this class are useful and easy to understand, but expect at least 2 research papers to read and 1 essay to write per week. Overall, definitely a class that's worth to take.
The class is alittle harder than expected. The tests are based half of T/F questions and its annoying. They are also only 25 questions so it is hard to do well. You meet with a TA once a week and discuss the lecture you watched instead of meeting with Niemic. The set up is odd and the class is a little boring, mainly memorization. Hes nice tho
For PSY181, Niemiec is essentially an abstentee, only sometimes popping up into the TA discussions (we all watch the same 5yr old lectures - don't like the lecturing tbh). Don't like the class set up. Exams aren't horrible, but all mc/T/F means a few wrong is a big hit to the grade. This course is a HISTORY of psych course. Title is misleading.
Chris is a great guy and his lectures are always entertaining. His tests are multiple choice and are only based on what he says in class, so I wouldn't bother reading the textbook. The mini courses were easier but just annoying to attend outside of class. The whole grade is based on four exams, and there is no final. Great introductory class.
Great person and professor. Gives clear and organized lectures that prepare you well for the exams. His class was entertaining and a great introduction to psychology. Made me even more interested in the field. The mini courses were a bit stressful since it was outside of class, but it's not tough. You'll do great just by reviewing lecture slides
Chris was a great professor and really funny! It was nice being in a class of all freshmen with a chill professor. The tests aren't hard as long as you effectively study. I got a textbook but it's not necessary (he records all lectures and the test material is only from the lectures, not the textbook)
Records all lectures so you don't have to attend class if you don't want to., thus practicing what he preaches about self-determination theory and the importance of autonomy in intrinsic motivation.
Chris is so entertaining and his lectures are actually entertaining. Loved this class, made mre realize I want to minor in psych.
Christopher is a great professor. Always go to the lectures they are very engaging. The exams are straight forward and easy to do well on if you study. Take lots of notes and go over the slides before exams. There is also an opportunity for extra credit with the mini courses provided.
Prof Niemiec keeps lectures light and interesting, stays on topic, and uses personal anecdotes to help students connect with lecture material. Class is easy and manageable if you take good notes and review them regularly.
Chris has great lectures and the tests are very straightforward if you study. Just know you will have to take mini courses run by the TAs- these don't take a lot of time.
Niemiec is a great professor. He explains the content clearly and is super funny! His style is also very passionate and doesn't bore you. Not hard to get a good grade. 4 easy-medium difficulty tests and a ton of extra credit; like so much extra credit your grade can be raised by a full letter. Please take this course if you can.
By far one of my favorite professors, and I loved that this was one of my very first college courses. Neimeic makes lectures hilarious, interesting, and light to learn, and tests weren't hard either. Mini workshops helped, and his reenacting of Freud's psychosexual theory still is one of my favorite memories. Love to take more of his courses!
Great professor, material is really basic and broad, he made psyc a little bit more interesting. Go to lecture and take notes, rewatch all lectures that will be tested on the exam. Overall just memorize to get A.
I wish I were able to give a more detailed review but I saw the professor twice the whole semester. The class is basically taught be TAs and some videos. The professor only teaches two classes in person. The TA sessions are required and sometimes they feel very forced and the TA just wants everyone to speak even if there is nothing to be said.
The professor only had two lectures and the rest were asynchronous videos. Grading criteria was not clear on how participation impacts your grade. The out of class discussions can feel forced, most of the time no one has anything to add. Nearly impossible to get a hold of the professor or the grad TAs over email.
Unclear of grading criteria for students and may change it without informing students beforehand. Unreachable outside of a class that is almost entirely asynchronous and pretty much only taught by TAs. Nice and funny guy, but almost impossible to get an A for bogus reasons.
Chris was such a nice and caring professor, with the course material being super interesting too! I wish we had more in person lectures with Chris though, as most of the course was a mix of online modules and in-class discussions with TAs. The grading criteria, and how the attendance would factor into the grade wasn't made very clear either.
Not accessible outside of class, can be successful in class if you memorize EVERYTHING, goes on a rampage about his two daughters, offers some extra credit.
Goat professor. Very straightforward exams, very crammable if thats your thing. Has extra credit which can boost your grade (ex. B+ -> A-). You don't need to do any of the readings and you will be fine. But if you mess up on one exam you're kind of cooked because most of the grade is 4x50 point exams, with 50 points from TA lead "mini courses".
I did enjoy 181 overall, although I feel the grading criteria weren't really the best. I felt this class was a downgrade to my time in 101 cause he barely showed up to in class discussion, and I feel it would be better if he had taught in person, but I doubt it will change. He also wasn't available to help outside class :(, this class is ok ig....
