Very easy teaching method for super hard topic. Pay atention, don't fall behind
HOT ex-stockbroker from NY, Now a Surfer!
Funny guy, sorta weird. Easy teacher
very laid back, easiest stat teacher i've taken, explains thigs well
No Comments
Explained everything so good, even I go it. final is 30% of grade, that killed m
Lectures are great, Very relaxed, Make the material easy to learn
very fun, and outgoing, makes course fun
best stats teacher! Makes class easy and wants all his students to do good
easy, very clear on what he teaches
Awesome prof! Taught us lots of great math tricks such as one he called the ninja bomber and another called the goblin that helped me understand a equations I couldn't get before! Also, he's hot!! Ex Lehigh guy turned California beach-comber bum.
very hot! easy to understand and very helpful
he is so hot is just hard to concentrate. i wonder how old he is. i love his 5 ocklock shadow and his tush. so so hot. Class was easy, teaches unbelivably well, he understand what a student needs in ordfer to learn. explains better than any book. Easy A
awesome teacher. i definatly recommend him. hes very understanding and there if you need any extra help. ... but most the time that is not even needed because he explains concepts in the simplest mannors. i loved this class :)
hes cool and just attend lecture and take notes and read em. hes understanding if u talk to him and hes easy to approach.hes very attractive too. he always goes out of his way to help u and makes sure he teaches what u need and does not go off topic he also jokes a lot!. the best professor i have had so far!he's young .
Chris is a good guy. He is very helpful and makes the class interesting and easy to understand.
Very nice teacher. Lectures are easy to understand. He's very helpful. NOT a grades killer.
Nice Lehigh Univ. turned surfer ok grader and cares. HOWEVER didn't allot time for more q's in class Lectures were REPETITIVE. The class moved PAINFULLY slow be4 FINALS. In all, NOT CONFIDENT that I learned everything I needed know for FINALS, passed barely w/ C. I'm suprised this wasn't his first year teaching. I don't care what these #'s say.
Stats isnt really MY subject so i didnt really go to class EVERYDAY. However, hes a really good teacher and does very well at explaining things in HIS way. He repeats a lot of what he says to get it through your head. Oh.. hes a surfer guy that likes to use fun statistical scenarios and he drinks A LOT of coffee. I mean... A LOT.
He's awesome. Its not required to go to class, but you should to make the class easy. He is fun and interesting. He is evry willing to help and clarify things.
The teacher honestly repeats everything 2 to 3 times in a row ... and not in the reinforcing way but the annoying way that drives you insane. He constantly messes up what he is writing on the board and starts to go through a problem and realizes it is the wrong problem he is showing us. He also gets in weird moods where sometimes he is happy but ot
Good teacher but it wasnt the easiest class in the world but it really wasnt that difficult. I never used the textbook, it was worthless. The best way to learn the material in my opinion was to print out his notes from blackboard. He puts up practice stuff which helps because they are similar to how the tests are.
I hated this class. He repeated everything at least 3 times, and I felt like I didn't learn anything from him. There's no way you can pass this without going to class, so I would suggest finding a better teacher because this guy was lame.
Omg this teacher is awesome….go to class and you will be ok… do all the homework.. use his notes posted on blackboard… he's willing to help so go 2 OFFICE HOURS.. he makes math easy.. interesting and fun class..
Business stats was not the easiest subject but chris was a good teacher and knows the subject. He drops the lowest and the midterm you score highest on is worth more. Go to class and bring the lecture notes they will help out a lot. He is very willing to help if you need it.
I took stats in high school and it seems like it was SO much harder then! Chris really made stats as simple as possible and really wanted us to do well! Quizzes were EASY and tests were hard because he didn't write them. Awesome professor... TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!! You don't need the book in his class either, save some money! :-)
Ok, so don't buy the book, it's a waste of money. just make sure you buy the mathxl stuff cuz all your hw is through that. Chris is a really cool guy and really easy to talk too. it's just too bad that i REALLY hate stats. he made the class bearable. the quizzes are very easy, straight from lecture. tests are hard, but study hard and you'll get a C
Pros- book not needed, easy online hw, non-mand attendance. can explain topics fairly well. Cons- Most Difficult 200pt comprehensive Final, studying is a must if you plan to pass. in every class more than half fail on their first attempt. seek help from outside sources. quote- "lies, d*mn lies and statistics"- winston churchill
first semester i failed this class with a grad student as the teacher. chris explained everything step by step and if you dont understand he will keep repeating it. very helpful. YOU MUST GO TO CLASS. if you dont go you will most likely be way behind because everyday he teaches alot of information. hw is easy easy easy. take lots of notes in class
Do not buy the book. Use the reserve copies in the library just before the test and you'll be fine and save yourself money. Not a bad class. Print out notes before class and listen.
Needs to get a grip on reality. He constantly mentions how he should be teaching accounting and finance majors @ SDSU. He can barely teach IDS 301. He gets so worked up about the material that by the end of class he's literally screaming-So annoying. He should maintain his personal hygiene a bit better & lose the flip flops-NOT professional.
The tests are very hard, I would fecommend taking the class at a jc if your able to.Chris is the best teacher to take stats119 with. He explains the material VERY WELL! Go to his office hours, they help alot and do all the practice tests he puts up for the midterms and final.
I definitely reccomend taking him for this class. He's super helpful and his examples in class are clear and relevant to what's going to be on exam. lowest midterm dropped as an added plus. Super easy class, but I still learned from it
By far my faavorite teacher at SDSU... He teaches everything very clearly and if you don't understand something ask him and he'll clearify everything for u! The homework is really easy and the tests are hard if you don't study... For me, this class was an easy A, b/c a attended class and occasionally went to his office hours!!!
Show up for class, take notes on the examples and rework the problems before the tests and you won't even need the book
Super cool guy. Easy to talk to. Goes over almost every problem with you. Mostly learned from his lecture notes so class attendance is a must. Homework problems helped but were not turned in. Book just for extra practice. Great professor for Stats, actually made it interesting!
by far the best stats professor. i hated stats and was ready for a hard semester, but i kind of breezed by. i didn't use the textbook at all. went to lectures and studied off his notes. A/B if you study and take notes.
Go to class and you will be fine. Very repetitive, but helps in the end. He's very accommodating, straight forward, and a good teacher. :)
Chris is great. Explains material VERY well. Willing to help outside of class. Enthusiastic and energetic. Uses real-world examples (mostly related to gambling...haha) to help illustrate the concepts. Go to class and pay attention and you'll do just fine. Book isn't really needed, but it does help to do practice problems.
CHRIS IS SUCH A GOOD GUY! HE GOES OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP HIS STUDENTS AND IS WILLING TO HELP EVEN THOSE WHO ARE NOT IN HIS CLASS. HE DEFINITELY MADE THIS CLASS AS CRYSTAL CLEAR AS POSSIBLE. FOR THE ONES WHO COMPLAIN - GO TO CLASS!! IF CHRIS SEES THAT YOU GO TO CLASS, AND YOU ARE TRYING YOUR HARDEST THEN HE'LL DEFINITELY HELP YOU OUT IN THE END.. =]
CHRIS DEFINITELY IS ONE OF THE BEST TEACHER HERE AT STATE. I'M SO GLAD I STUCK WITH MY GUTS AND KEPT THIS CLASS, ORIGINALLY I WAS GOING TO TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER BECAUSE MY FRIEND WAS ROOTING FOR FOR HIM SOO MUCH. BUT I'M GLAD I DID NOT TAKE THE OTHER GUY AND KEPT CHRIS. AMAZING PROFESSOR TO HAVE!! TAKE HIM AND YOU WILL LEARN!!
this was a very hard subject it took a lot of work but chris is very helpful in his office hours
Chris is the best teacher i've ever had. he avoids the BS and keeps class fun, but you also learn everything very well.
chris is great. stats can be a hard concept to grasp but if you go to his office hours he will make everything clear. he's also easy on the eyes
Chris is great. The subject itself is pretty lame, but Chris makes it really easy. I found that not printing out the slides, and copying the notes onto a piece of paper was a lot easier, and cut out worthless info.
Chris is a really nice guy, but the material is ultra difficult; so it's not Chris' fault. 3 tests, 2 projects (simple) and 1 final and he drops the lowest regular test score. Nothing is curved. The only way to make this course easy is to reduce the amount of material coverage and focus on Z, T & ChiSquared. If you have to take IDS 301, take Chris.
Chris is a cool prof. He was very helpful and made stats as fun as it can get. There were two midterms and a final. His quizzes only helped you grasp the material better. Really glad that I took him.
Stats has always been hard for me. ask questions if you need something answered. print out notes he posts on blackboard. do all the homework-its hard but you can do it over and over agian until you get 100 for easypoints. pay attention!
Great professor. makes stats easy to understand 3 exams all multiple choice drops your lowest!
Chris is amazing. He makes this difficult subject clear. His tests are difficult but passable. I went to EVERY class and only 2 office hours. I used the book to study purposes only. Oh and hot for a fighting/wrestling New Yorker... Mmmmm
he is a great teacher
I want to wrestle him.
Great teacher, don't take any other teacher! Drops one test and keeps it easy.
I've heard only good things about chris. easy just make sure you study. tests are difficult becuz his practice problems hint to you what formula to use but on test he doesn't tell you and you have to figure it out based on what variables are given. DO NOT MESS UP ON 1ST TEST. its the easiest so make sure you know it.take this class.geta study group
Don't bother with the other trash that's teaching this class. Chris won't BS you and he actually says WHY we're learning this junk in the first place. I didn't pass this class in the fall with some crap teacher, but took it with Chris and began to understand the subject. Three exams(drops lowest), two assignments, and final. Best prof. for the sub!
Great professor, I got a B only because I missed a few classes. If you SHOW UP to his class and pay attention there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. He drops the lowest exam and there are a couple assignments. You will be lost on the assignments if you don't go to class. Best prof you can take for this class!
Great teacher. Do not buy the book unless you want for extra practice but it is not necessary to do well in this class. Gives lots of examples for practice. Test are very similar to the notes you print for each chapter.3 Midterms and a final but he drop your lowest midterm. If you have the chance to take this teacher do it.
I didn't see the appeal in his teaching style. He was a fine professor, nothing spectacular. He teaches the subject but is kind of dull. I went to his office hours and he wasn't very helpful. I passed the class but wasn't overly impressed with him like everyone else. Buy the textbook if you want extra practice problems, if not, it's not worth it.
Didn't see what the hoopla was about. Not bad, but not great. He's really hyper walking all over the room and kinda disorganized when explaining and working out problems on the board. Office hrs were so-so. Seems to play favorites. You can do fine by doing given practice problems and some book problems. I guess there are worse to choose from.
This guy is awesome! I took him at Cuyamacca, and wish he taught a class that I needed here at State. Probably the best professor I've ever had! Definitely recommend taking him!
Worse teacher I've had so far. No one wanted to ask questions because he makes you feel stupid. Test are super hard and frustrating. Stay away from him and this class is you can help it at all. Never had any grade under an A till now..If you can avoid taking him do yourself a favor and find someone else. I have no idea what I just learned.
No Homework! Class isnt mandatory but everything he lectures is on the exam. Had a C my first exam. Walked out of the semester with a B+ not bad at all :) He is a cool professor very helpful
Very good. Very good teacher, goes out of his way to make sure you get it. Does a very good job of relating stuff to real world.
I really enjoyed taking this class and especially for it being a 7-10pm he made it easy to stay awake. He is very clear in his lectures and cares about his students learning without making it overly challenging. I would take him again!
Amazing professor! Professor O'Byrne is by far one of the best teachers I have had at SDSU. He made stats so much easier, he is very down to earth and provides many relatable examples. He answers every question in class and makes sure you get it. He has a very structured class. Test aren't that hard if you do all homework and practice problems.
He is a really nice guy who Is clear about what he wants and expects. His tests are hard though, and you have to go to A+ or every class in order to do well. It is a challenging class but he is the best teacher of the bunch to take MIS with.
Chris gave very clear and fun lectures, full of real world examples (a lot about gambling haha). He will go out of his way to help you and really cares about his students. Stats has never been so interesting!
Chris is one of my favorite professors. He's extremely willing to help his students and is pretty funny. Go to class and take good notes. Do the practice problems and you should do well on the tests.
He's a funny guy, and he uses good examples. But that's not new because you'll see every other review mention that too. Legit good professor for this class. Idk about the others, but I'm glad I took this guy. I think if you go to class, you won't need to do the homework... BUT I advise doing it. Shouldn't take more than an hour max if you went.
This is a tough class. O'Byrne made it as simple as he could by explaining the concepts well. You just have to practice and study the material a lot in order to do well. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and is there to help if you need it. He has packets for you to take notes in that point out the highlights of the chapters.
Absolutely amazing professor. Utilize his office hours if you need additional help or clarification. This class is based solely what you put into it. Tests aren't designed to be tricky but you MUST give yourself adequate time to prepare. Drops lowest test score (excluding final). He teaches statistics in a way that is understandable to students.
he's a bit scattered, has packets but jumps around them. Overall good teacher, relates topics to real life as much as possible.
lowest exam score dropped, exams make up 95% of grade + 1 case for 5% .Does not curve. Goes really fast/skips around, kind of hard to follow lectures, exams have some tricky questions. His lectures are high energy but its not an easy class.
Go to class and study his packets. Makes statistics easy to understand. A great lecturer. He has so much energy from what looks like caffeine. Probably my favorite professor at SDSU. His classes are on Fridays, but its worth it. Skip a class and you lose a lot of value.
Attendance not mandatory but you need to go or you'll be at least a chapter behind. No textbook - packets for each chapter (really helpful). If you go through packets for exams & redo the problems, you'll do well on the tests. That's how I studied & got an A- and B+ on 2 tests (3 tests, lowest test dropped, 1 final. Do case studies - easy pts!
This guy, while easier than other MIS professors, is really not an expert in what he does. This is definitely not an enjoyable class and anyone who tells you that it is is caught up thinking that O'Byrne actually cares about you because he tells you a joke or two in class. It's just another class to pass for graduation. Very uninspiring.
3 Midterms, lowest score of the 3 is dropped. Final is cumulative (cannot be dropped). Class isn't too difficult, just as long as you go to class and take notes. He offers review sessions for midterms and finals which are hit or miss. Overall, not easy but not too difficult, just stay on top and you'll pass
Best math teacher I've had at SDSU. His lectures are tailor made for you to succeed. No homework other than two 1 page papers which were very easy. Tests are 95% of the grade here so show up to class and write notes and you will do well. Best option for business students who need to knock out stats.
Please make sure you show up to class even attendance is not mandatory. His tests are exactly what he taught in class. No trick. Just understand the question carefully. He walks steps by steps. No homework and even one test drop. No curve, no TI-84 needed. I really enjoy this class. If you listen and practice the packages again and again, easy A.
This class is difficult. There is no room for improvement if you don't do well on one test. He does not provide not even one chance for extra credit. The formula sheets provided for exams does not show all formulas. The course grades are 95% exams which is ridiculous. The professor's teaching style is average. He goes a tangent about nothing.
The class content is EXTREMELY challenging, so if you don't pay attention during lectures, there's a good chance you won't pass. Chris is an awesome teacher, definitely quirky at times, but he wants to genuinely help you so ask questions! I hated that this class was on Friday but I heard the other teacher sucked more so *shrug*
The packets and lectures are exactly what will be on the exam. Print out the packets, take notes and follow along in lecture, and study the packets for the test. Structure of the class make it easier.
Great Professor, however, the class should be renamed as Math 301 alternatively MIS 301 since he cut off 75% on chapter 10 and we learn nothing about chapter 14 and 15 (Linear , multiple regression - students with business major should know). Those chapters were announced on the syllabus!
amazing, really made an impact. 10/10 would recommend if you ever have the chance!
Terrible teacher. I learned absolutely nothing in this class and I had to attend a plus to pass. If you take this class don't bother going to class and just go to a plus.
He's a great teacher but he's just so ANGRY. I don't know if something altered his life or what, but he's just constantly irritated and annoyed at the class, almost as if he despises students. His disposition makes the class feel so tense and anxious that many people stopped showing up. I got by with a B, but hated every second in there.
This class is supposed to be Business statistics applications working on Excel with text book he offered, Modern Business Statistics with Microsoft Excel... but he taught NONE of these applications. Very disappointed!
Very difficult class. All math and statistics. The professor is average. The first test is not that hard but the other 3 are. Three midterms and a final. Exams are 95% and the case study is 5% you can drop the lowest of the three midterms.
If you must take MIS301 avoid O'byrne. He is aggressive and angry towards his students. During exams he is overly paranoid of people cheating and will yell. 3 exams, 1 final. No homework but this is not a good thing since it would help you learn the material. You have to rely on his lectures. Exams were HARD and you can't have any notes. AVOID.
Terrible teacher! Does not explain things well
I believe deep down he cares. It seemed as though he was going through something difficult in his life & lashed out on his class. Personally I found him aggressive & it was not easy for me to learn in his classroom the way that he taught. It was truly a very uncomfortable atmosphere. The entire grade was based on the exams & final.
Funny professor that makes the topics fairly enjoyable and relates everything to real life. The tests are exactly what he goes over in class. He literally takes pictures of what he does on the board and that is exactly what is on the exams.
The whole class is three tests, an easy case study, and a cumulative final. He drops the lowest test. No need to get the book you won't use it. Study and master his practice tests and you'll do solid. He is a little bit cuckoo, but better than the other professors at SDSU because hes just reteaching Stat 119, so its all stuff you've learned before.
Okay professor, I feel like he comes to lecture after dealing with an annoying client & takes it out on us..(he's a tax consultant). Only about a 1/3 of the class shows put for lectures, but on test days its full, i think b/c ppl go to the A+ review... Meaning attendance not mandatory. 3 test+final, drop lowest test & case study. Math labfree help
A great professor. Never used the textbk nor anything with Excel. Attendance does not count but I would highly recommend going. What he says/teaches is exactly like the tests. 4 midterms 1 cumulative final but your lowest mid is dropped. Just by going to class I understood everything. he is so nice and cares about how you do.
TAKE HIM HE IS GREAT!!!! He helps SO MUCH in office hours so go to them! only 3 exams and one very easy assignment. Straight forward class and he is so funny during lectures and tells great stories. Highly advise you to take him for MIS he is so helpful!!!
I am a transfer student and took this class for 3 hours once a week. I thought it would be terrible but it was not too bad and he was good at explaining things. I would strongly recommend asking questions and going to office hours for further explanation because he loves the participation! Don't ask meaningless questions with obvious answers.
O'Byrne has weird vibes but is a really solid professor. Just go to class and actively listen. There is no homework. Your entire grade is essentially tests, no fluff. If you struggle go to Aplus review.
He was completely disrespectful to the many students who had trouble watching his videos. SO many people complained about his lecture videos taking hours to load or not even working and he just said "Still working on it". Most frustrating experience. He should not be allowed to teach an online course.
This class is basically a statistics class. If you have a decent foundation in statistics, this class will be a breeze. Its lecture heavy and its all exams, no homework. Just make sure you take good notes from lecture and review it and you should be good. Do the practice problems to ensure you know the material. If you do that youll get an A.
Like a stats class, however he seems to want things calculated by hand (using tables) instead of using your calculator. There's no homework, just discussion boards (12%), cases (3%), and 4 exams (85%) and he drops your lowest exam. He seemed intimidating at first, but he's actually a funny and chill guy. Uses lockdown browser w/ camera for exams.
An absolutely amazing teacher who cares about his students and their learning. He definitely made the class bearable and understandable for someone like me who struggles with math.
Writing this as a person who does horrible in math, very doable if you put in the time needed. DONT CRAM! His lectures are sometimes confusing/you'd have to figure out, but overall he did great dumbing down concepts. He can seem scary w/ his bantering but hes really nice/considerate of his students esp during COVID! Recommend getting to know him.
The only teacher I had that made a successful effort to adapt to online classes. His courses are organized very well. Every assignment or test question there is a practice problem for, NO TRICKS. He will do anything to help his students. ASK QUESTIONS, he is not your typical snarky email professor. Very nice and sensible guy. Best teacher I had
His discussion boards are twice a week, so you are forced to be up to date on the lectures which helps you stay on track for exams. He tells you what to expect on the exams and his questions are exactly like his practice problems! Try to get his method of solving problems down since you will use it on almost all the exams. Not easy, but no tricks.
tests are 85% of grade. doesn't help that he only decided to put out exactly what's on the test only for the last 2 (4 tot). The first 2 you're gonna need to watch his hours long lectures. Coming from someone rooting for A+ review, it doesn't help as they keep doing EVERYTHING on a ti83+ while class only recommend a ti30. does offer office hrs tho
he is horrible, 5 tests, homework due every few days, and there is a ton of material that is absolutely impossible to keep up with, his videos, and lecture notes/examples are extremely disorganized and you will have to really claw your eyes out for a decent grade, i recommend taking anyone other than him, unless you really really really like stats.
Professor O'Byrne has a VERY unpredictable temper, he went from praising the entire class when we did good on HW to completely ghosting us and not posting any solutions and/or test prep (because some student complained about him not offering enough help), and now accusing students of CHEATING when not solving problems his way. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
Horrible, horrible professor! Probably the worst one I've had in my college career. Yells at his students. Accuses people of cheating. You're not allowed to have any outside help, even from a tutor. Makes you do everything by hand, when the textbook shows you how to do it in excel. Takes forever to grade discussions. Just avoid taking him!
I feel like the hate here is unnecessary. He did get mad on a Bb announcement. That being said, class is straightforward. Practice problem videos incredibly helpful. This is coming from someone who is probably going to get a C (more on me than him). For an online class, he wasnt bad at all. 2 Disc. Boards a week. Id take him again tbh.
Before this stats class, I had never received more than a C in stats. The professor uploaded pre recorded lectures and some were quite long. However, the practice problems he provided were really helpful for DB's and exams. He makes his own problems and is very suspicious so don't cheat. Not the best class ever but certainly not the worst.
Not helpful and petty, ZERO organization ... argues with students. It is basically stats 119 on roids. Not terribly difficult but be prepared to learn it on your own. 6 tests, one dropped and 20 homework assignments. Would NOT recommend
Gives a lot of resources to learn the material and prepare for exams. He provides lecture videos, practice problems that are extremely helpful. He's always willing to answer student's questions. He's honestly a chill professor who wants his students to succeed in class. 5 Tests, but he drops one. Tests are exactly like his practice problems.
The professor was good and the way he explains the topic is clear. But the only thing is that the 5 exams with 85% of the class and there were like 20 discussion boards that worthed only 15% of our grade. Exams are multiple-choice and he gives enough time, but there were hard. We were allowed to use a calculator, formulas sheet, and tables.
He is enthusiastic about stats making lectures very engaging! Provides detailed lecture notes that summarize the textbook (you can get away w/not buying it) & he creates all of the class material himself so study his lectures/videos to do well on exams. Answers emails quickly & will meet with you outside office hours if needed. My fav class at SDSU
Professor O'Byrne is engaging and very thorough with his lectures. Come to class, take good notes and you'll get a B. If you do that + study, you'll get an A. He's very good at answering questions without sounding intimidating. He drops the lowest test and discussion board post.
Professor Obyrne knows what hes teaching. If you listen in class and focus on what he wants you to know, you're good. He also posts a bunch of videos to help you study for the exam, as well as practice problems. He makes statistics not as boring as it is.
Good professor, great lecturer. Managed to make a 3 hour Friday class engaging. He's a little old school in that you have to use tables instead of calculator stat functions. Exams are very straightforward, and he provides lots of practice problems and videos. He drops the lowest exam & discussion board. Don't buy the textbook, it's never needed.
He is whatever. I had amazing professors at Mesa for stats and blows him out of the water. I love stats, but if you have a odd professor who makes things unclear - you'll hate it. I didn't like his teaching style and FOR ME found it hard to listen to him. His humor is appreciated but the blabber is unnecessary. I needed to go to aplus to get by.
attendance: ungraded but mandatory textbook: no need, don't buy comments: worth the tuition
I have so much respect for this man! It was clear from the first day of class that he truly cared about teaching us the material properly - so that we might actually leave this class with a greater understanding of statistics. He always brings a great attitude and so much care to every single class. Do yourself a favor and take his class!
Chris is an outstanding professor and probably your best choice for MIS301. He's very clear when it comes to his problems. Everything he covers on class will be on the exam. He drops your lowest exam, so if u do great on the first 4, u dont have to take the final one, which is non-cumulative. He provides A LOT of resources to pass his exams!
I took him a few yrs ago-I never showed up to class, went to tutoring and studied extremely hard before tests and I failed. Took him again this semester-went to every class, barely studied and passed. All you need to do is show up to lecture, pay attention and you'll be fine!
As someone who basically failed stats 119, I wish I had O'Byrne as a teacher back then. He truly cares about his students and goes the extra mile to make sure they understand the material. Definitely take him for MIS 301. Also there's none of that excel crap that other teachers require students to complete which is a huge plus.
MIS 301 is hard, but as long as you show up and take notes Chris will make the class understandable. He has a lot of difference sources outside of class like pre-recorded lectures and examples with answers. Great guy, can be weird though
Go to class and pay attention and you'll pass. Subject is pretty easy and there is not much homework. He listens to students about what is confusing. Exams are exactly like homeworks. He is super chill also. Easy A
5 tests drops worst, no final. 15 or so discussion boards and dropped worst. Definitely gives the resources to succeed. Do practice problems. Could've went for the A but decided to skip the final test instead. Solid (P)rofessor!
He makes the material super easy to follow, usually what he teaches is exactly how it is on the exams, just with different numbers. There are 14-15 discussion board problems and 5 exams (drops the lowest DB & exam). His lectures are straightforward, make sure to either go to each class or follow his lectures online, which are exactly the same.
I took him virtually and he was honestly a fantastic professor. He did a lot of whiteboard work (which is my preferred method of learning math) and gave a lot of practice problems to work with. Sometimes if you email him with a question, he'll give you a phone call, so he really cares about his students.
Math is not my strongest subject that being said I knew I had to put in a lot of effort. Professor O'Bryne gives you the tools to succeed. He had videos working through problems very similar to the ones on the discussion boards which definitely helped solve the DB. He also drops your lowest exam and DB. Do the practice problems to study for exams!
Don't take this guys class. He makes everything harder than need be, makes you do everything in his own complex and hard to understand way, he gives out rapid-fire homework that makes no sense, he takes photos of students in class which I'm pretty sure is a violation, and is always paranoid about his homework being online. All around awful class.
I advise against taking this professor. The overall class structure is only made up of 4 tests at 85% and 15 discussions. Drops 1 each however, grades are significantly determined by tests with no lee-way. Tests make or break your grade. The professor's teaching in class is different from his lecture videos. Get ready for a lot of self-teaching.
Best Professor I've ever taken. This class could be difficult but this Professor makes it extremely easy to understand. What he teaches is exactly what is on the exam. He is always willing to help and has quick replies. 15 discussion boards, 4 tests. Study the practice problems and you'll do fine on the tests. I'd suggest going to class as well.
Would recommend this prof for 301 as the lesser of all evils. He seems to be the easiest prof for this class, but grade is 75% exams + 25% DB's. Lectures weren't very helpful personally, a lot of self teaching + go to A plus. A little rude sometimes but just listen to his instructions and stay on his good side.
Exams are 85% of your grade and DBs are 15%. He is clear about his grading criteria-what he teaches you will be on the exams, no curveballs. Math is not my strong suit but I put in the time and effort to fully understand and complete the DBs which helped me on the exams. He is really caring and if you put in the time + effort you will be fine!
Literally pulls up the textbook with highlights for lectures. Takes attendance even though it doesn't count for anything? A little eccentric but a nice guy and can be entertaining. A lot of easy online quizzes and tests (open book) and allows cheat sheet for in class exams.
Take this prof! He is so nice and caring and truly loves to teach! He is there for his students more than for the paycheck he receives. Super super nice guy. I highly recommend and he gives you a good insight of the world and the material we are learning.
He was a great professor, he was here for the students and did not care about the book. He was open about what was going to be on the test. He brought up the book in class and showed his highlights, which gave us a great idea of what we would need to know. Quizzes and assignments were easy and took no longer than 30 minutes.
Such an awful professor. His discussion boards make absolutely no sense. He posts his own discussion boards to CHEGG, and will report you for plagiarism even if you are just using it to learn. He doesn't like tutors, peer tutors, A+, or anyone. He sets you up for failure, and doesn't like or allow shortcuts on calculators.
AWFUL, like the ratings below say he will report you for cheating if you don't follow his way. He also says to not have tutors, peer tutors, go to A plus or anything. Which is really weird. Ive never had a professor tell me to only go to him, and you can't have tutors.
Professor O'Bryne is extremely rude to students. His discussion boards are senseless. Best way to succeed is to watch his videos online and do the practice problems on the google drive. He is also quite stubborn and always scrambling on test day. I would go with another Prof.
Guy's a straight legend. The way he explains things in class and his prerecorded videos it just sticks. Wants you to actually LEARN, so if you put in the effort and ACTUALLY try you can get an A easily. Go to him if you need clarification. All the bad reviews are from last semester's students that had
He is a really good professor and actually wants his students to learn. There is no reason to try and cheat you will not get away with it. As long as you attend lectures, take good notes, do the homework, do his practice tests, and watch his lectures i promise you will be fine. Class is hard but if you put in the work you will be totally fine.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is so nice and funny and truly wants his students to do well in his class. You will get an A if you make a good cheat sheet with the highlights he provides in class.I thanked god everyday that i took his class instead of the other professors that my friends would complain about.
I believe his lectures are very clear and useful. He provides videos on all material he explains in class which are helpful. Tests are not bad if you understand his lectures and you take good notes. He allows you to drop one of the four tests, meaning if you do good on the first three, you don't have to take the final (non cumulative).
You have to attend lectures if you plan on passing this class. The textbook is rarely referenced, and the homework and exams are based purely on lectures. Sometimes he can't cover everything in class, so you have to watch his online videos to teach yourself. Overall not a terrible class or professor
He was very clear and his exams were very straightforward.
He is an amazing professor. His lectures go over everything that will be on the exam and he gives study guides before every exam which are very similar to the actual test. You do have to show up for every class if you want to get a good grade in the class. He's very caring and accommodating to any issues you have. Would take him again if I could.
O'Byrne is a legend. The lectures are clear, concise, easy to follow, and paced in a way that each one builds off the previous in a logical manner. He cares and wants all of his students to succeed. He's "tough" in a sense that he won't coddle you or straight up give you answers, but if you put in the effort he'll do everything to help you succeed.
He is so far the best professor I have taken in SDSU!!!! He is the best! Even thought I have never been good at math, he explains so interesting and so clear that I have actually been doing well in the course! His lectures are so fun, so if you struggle with math like me you should take him!
One of the best professors I have ever had. His passion and love for teaching can be seen in every lecture and he cares a lot about students understanding the material. Very down-to-earth and will drop everything to help you understand something. Class is not too bad if you attend every lecture and do the discussion boards. This man is a legend!
great professor, class is graded on 12 discussion boards & 5 tests (he drops one each) his lectures are very informative and relevant to the tests but if u don't go to class he has youtube videos w the same content. tests are exactly like the practice problems/lecture examples. he's a really nice guy and if u go to class and study you'll do great!!
Professor O'Byrne is definitely one of my favorite professors. He doesn't use slides and just writes on a whiteboard, so it can be hard to follow along sometimes, but he's always willing to answer any questions you have. He records tons of videos on each topic covered and makes practice sheets for every exam. You can tell he wants you to succeed.
He's a great teacher and teaches very practically. He uploads videos covering every single topic covered in class and they're just as thorough as in class lectures. 12 DB homeworks that take maybe 20 minutes at most. 5 exams, lowest score dropped. Study hard for the first 4 and then you can skip the final and focus on your other class finals.
I'm honestly horrible at math and hate the subject mostly because I don't understand it. But he's great at teaching, just show up to class and use his videos and you'll pass.Although he's very strict with not using chegg, help from peers, or even tutors. He uploads videos showing step by step on how to do the problems. 100% recommend him.
O'Byrne is a good professor. He makes sure you're engaged and applies real world examples to his problems in class. If you signed up for this class expecting to learn excel, you will have a rude awakening. It is all pen and paper raw statistics, absolutely zero excel. So be prepared for that, nothing like MIS180.
Show up to every class (if you can), pay attention, and bring a copy of the lecture to write notes in the margin (great if you have an ipad). What you learn in class will be on the exam. Did not need or use a book at all. The class was super easy as long as you show up to class and pay careful attention! 3 tests, one gets dropped.
The way he sets up class material isn't hard at least it shouldn't be. He has major anger issues and after a few students came to class late because the final exam is optional, he threatened to fail the entire class. He's not kidding. He took away discussion boards, exam review, office hours and even threatened to throw curveballs on the exam.
He literally threatened students in the beginning of class to not have access to tutors, online, or anything that might help you will statistics other than solely his teachings otherwise anything else is considered cheating in his eyes. The worst part is that he is unapproachable, rude and doesn't seem all that well. Take him at your own risk.
Chris is one of my favorite math teachers ever. He does get irritable at people talking in class or coming in late, so pretend that his class is mandatory & come on time if you plan to go that day. His lectures keep you awake and he breaks down material very well. Do his practice problems, take good notes, watch his videos, & you'll do fine.
Super nice professor, he even acknowledges how boring this course can be. Attendance is not mandatory, but I suggest attending as he highlights important textbook stuff that will be on the exam. Take exams seriously and make good cheat sheets because there are few assignments. A few completion assignments and open everything quizzes.
If you are good at teaching yourself things, you can just not show up to class, and teach it all to yourself through his useful videos he posts online for every module. He wants to see you win which doesn't happen a lot. He passes around a sign in sheet in class, but I personally don't think uses that for anything besides making people feel investe
If you were good at Stats119/Calc, take him. Other MIS classes are Excel heavy, this was a genuine on paper stats class. He gives out everything you need to know in class, there are also good practice problems online. If you study your notes and practice problems you will do well on the exams.
I would say he is a good professor overall but I feel like the way he answers student sometime is rude. I went to his office hours once and he made me feel so dumb for not understanding something. It takes a lot for a person to go to office hours and ask for help. He does want to help his students but I think he can do it in a better way.
I liked O'Byrne don't get me wrong. He was just not the professor for me. If you like computation and memorizing formulas etc. by all means. I missed one class and that was where my down fall started. TBH I had a tough semester in Spring 2023. Just be ready for heavy lectures and the tests. Lots of computation. Cool professor, just not for me.
O'Byrne was a very easygoing Professor. He would go over the textbook in class and highlight the parts we needed to know for the tests. The homework for this class was very minimal. He let us have a page-written cheat sheet for the exams. He also sometimes would bring his dog to class.
Go to class-> Take notes-> Go over his videos on his google drive, you cannot fail if you follow this study routine.
Professor O'Byrne runs a tight ship, but if you follow his system - attending class, taking notes, and using the provided resources like his video lectures - you can do well. unstuck study was a big help for exam prep too.
Haven't even finished the semester and he's absolutely goat'd in my book. Got A's on all 3 tests so I don't have to take the final this week. He's really as good as it gets. Clearly was meant to teach even though he runs his own business as well. Show up, take notes, do the practice problems, you will get an A. Easy class tbh. Funny guy too.
Take O'Bryne for MIS 301. Best professor I have had yet as SDSU. His lectures are entertaining and cover EXACTLY what will be on the exam. His exams are not super hard, all multiple choice, and if you watch his videos and do the practice problems he puts out, you will pass the class guaranteed. Don't be afraid to go to office hours.
MIS 301 is a beast of a class , . Professor has tons of resources, willing to help you, gets back to my emails super quick. DO NOT CHEAT!!! he will get you kicked out the university take this serious. heavily graded on exams, drops one! if not good at math suggest you study material 20 minutes a day , trust me. Class moves quick!
Super interesting, smart, and funny guy. Kept the information relevant and interesting, despite the dense course material. Provides tons of extra resources to help you prepare for exams. 100% take him if you can!
Chris O'Bryne is an amazing, passionate SDSU statistics professor and my favorite. His exciting lectures directly correlate to 80% of test questions, with 20% application concepts. Skipping his lectures would be a mistake. No textbook needed!
Make sure you come to class and pay attention. As long as you do that you will pass the tests. Highlight what he highlights, and then write it down as notes to reinforce. He gives cheat sheets for the tests. UTILIZE THAT. Each exam is 2-3 chapters. Write down what you do NOT know, and make sure you KNOW everything else!
Best math prof I've had at SDSU. Attendance not mandatory, but lectures help a lot—examples are like the exams. Grades: Discussion Boards (20%) & Exams (80%), lowest of each dropped. He shares practice problems and additional lectures via Google Drive if you're ever stuck—helpful for study. Strict but caring and funny. Highly recommend for MIS301!
If you go to class, you will learn a lot. He gives you access to a Google Drive with additional videos, explanations, problems with solutions, among others. And if you ask him a question, he is more than happy to answer it even if he has already explained it. You have all your chances to pass this class with his help if you put your part.
Best professor, he really cares that you learn the subject. He gives you access to Google Drive where you have more videos with explanations, video problems, and practice problems with solutions. If you don't understand something during class, you have that amazing tool plus asking questions; he is always there to answer them.
Great professor if you put the work in. I went to each lecture and wrote everything down, which I used to study, and supplemented this with the practice he gives on Google Drive. I spent probably the night before and the whole day(of the exam) studying for his exams(90% lowest). It may not be easy for everyone, ofc depends on learning.
Highly recommend taking MIS 301 with him. He is very knowledgeable and dedicated to teaching, making sure you understand everything. He gives 5 exams but drops the lowest one which is super helpful! Additionally there are discussion board questions that are like practice exam questions worth 20% of your grade.
So much exam/hw questions and they are tricky, for example, if you forgot to radical, there will be answer on the exam for that. which gives you a false sense of hope. just makes you super cautious about your answer which can be very annoying at times. No curve. Extremely difficult course. Very paranoid about what you do especially on exams.
His course was organized and his lectures explained the stats concepts in an easy to follow manner. Just watch the lecture videos, do the many practice problems he provides and you should do well in this course. I think I learned more about stats in this class than from my original stats class due to the practical applications focus.
He answered emails within seconds and was super quick to respond. Super helpful and gave all the resources to do well on the exam. They are exactly like the homework. The reason he didn't get a 5 was because he graded the homework super hard and also considers tutoring "cheating." I failed since I couldn't make the last in person exam.
I never write a rating ever but this was easily my favorite professor at SDSU. I hate math and stats was very hard for me, but he genuinely cares so much about his students and wants you to succeed. If you study, show up to class, and go to office hours you'll do amazing.
This is a tough class and he's the best professor to take it with. It's definitely still difficult but when you show up to the lectures, pay attention, take notes, do the discussions, you'll be good! He is clearly very intelligent and is passionate about what he teaches. Take him!
Very caring and incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about statistics, however for a "statictics for business analysis" class, there was no material relevant for business majors and was incredibly math heavy, make sure to buy a good calculator. Not a business class.
Highly recommend taking this professor for MIS 301!! I am not the best at math but he explains everything clearly in his lectures and makes it easy to understand. He really wants his students to succeed and gives you all the resources to do so.
Chris is one of the best professors I've had at SDSU, I wanted to write this review because Chris truly wants you to succeed as a student. He impacted my view on how to use statistics and numbers in life. Although it a tougher class Chris does his best to help you understand the problems and prepares you well for the exams if you put in the effort.
Best stats professor I've ever had. He wants students to be responsible and encourages students to do better. He provides practice problems and even reviews sessions. Very dedicated and reciprocates that energy to students. He is strict, but if you ask questions or need help, he will help you. Attendance not mandatory but highly recommended.
Chris is a caring and respected stats professor. He clearly outlines what you need to do to succeed, and will help you if you ask for it. He is strict on grading criteria/cheating, so if you take this class be thorough with your discussion boards! Honestly one of the best professors I've had at SDSU. If you put in the effort, you will pass.
Mr. O'Byrne has mastered the material. His teaching method helped my limited quantitative background understand the material and its importance. I borrowed the textbook from the library for studying. Mr. O'Byrne made the material "click". Put in the hard work for Statistics, it is worth the investment.
