Clear concise and to the point. I enjoy his classes.
bit strict on marking, but fair. Very helpful - great clarity of instruction.

A bit of an attitude, but knows his stuff!
Can be a bit moody-exams fair.
Fair tests. Never ask for help, you won't get it and it is not worth it.
Most clear teacher I ever had.
extremely sarcastic. don't ask for help. not a bad teacher though
marks unfair, won't help, basically a bad experience

He is the kind of guy that makes you want to give up on humanity!
AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!
Enjoyed this class. But he can be a hard marker
tough but fair, however, he can sure make you feel like an ass.
One word: ASS >:(
good teacher, but could use a personality makeover
I don't see why everyone hates him! Really funny, has great jokes. Very hard marker, but you sure learn the stuff.
An excellent instrucor.
no compassion, course is not bad, but teacher hard marker
Very Hard Marker! Not the nicest but his lessons are very clear so you can really understand. Not approchable though, can be a sarcastic ass
hard marker, expects you to know everything...went from an A in math 11 to a D in math 115.
Great Teacher. Tries to act like an a** hole but thats just his style. Whipped me in to shape in the mathematical sense. PS. He is built like Arnold Schwarzenegger

really nice guy but hard on exams..
He's an utter misanthrope; an orangutan has more manners. In my 19 years of schooling no teacher has so routinely insulted, belittled and ignored me like Chris has. I say all this as a likeable, outgoing A-level math student.
chris broke me of all my bad math habits, I learnd SO MUCH from him, may seem a bit mean but, that should not stop you from takeing his class, if you work hard, you will do well, and it will help a lot in 100, went from being a B to an A math student
If you don't want to work hard then don't take Chris. He has no patience for people not putting in the effort as I can see most of these people were. If you want to work hard he will help you try to understand til he's blue in the face. Great guy!!!!!!
Odgers is a dick! If u go to him for help, goodluck. He rides a freakin scooter to school, now that's big ballin!! No wonder he can't afford to change his damn clothes!! GH to tha ETTO! WOrst math teacher ever. Take math classes with Stan the Man!
I really like Chris. He makes fun jokes and keeps us on our toes. He is extremely fair and wants his students to do well. I went from being a C math student to an A math student
Was having genuine trouble with the material. He couldn't differentiate between having trouble and slacking. Brushed me off for 'not trying'. Like buying a defective item, amd having the clerk tell you "buyer beware".
Not helpful. If you suck up, or have the same interests, he might be more helpful. This was observed among other brown-nosing classmates.
This guy is the reason the death penalty is legal in the states. He has such a superior and belittling attitude he should be a public relations representative for Gordon Cambell. }:(
Nescient jerk. You'd be better off with any other math teacher.
Muscle man...not familiar to Asians. Arrogance. No one can understand his hand writing...like a Picasso painting
I only have one word to describe this guy...JERK! If I knew what he was like when I registered for this class, I would have opted for a different instructor.

Chris rocked!! Suck it up, you whiners.Sure his humor wasn't always politically correct but I found him funny and helpful if you went seek assistance before you had a major problem. Doesn't give a *&#% what others think, world needs more like him.
........
Chris is awesome! He had a great attitude as far as I could tell. I agree, the world needs more like him!
Great sense of humour, good teacher but goes fast through lectures. not very approachable. doesn't have any time for slackers
AWESOME prof. Not politically correct, and not for slackers. For the rest, highly recommended! Tough but fair marker. Keeps you engaged in the material, looks intimidating but is very friendly. He also drives a TINY scooter :).

Seems to jerk students around. Unless you sit at the front of the class, laugh at his jokes, and interact with him, he will screw you! Good lectures, but hardest marker I have ever met.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is extremely clear and guide you through every single step of the process. It's considered a relatively hard class, but he makes it much easier. If you procrastinate you will get lost. Funny guy.... :D
He rocks! He goes through everything in manner that makes the math so easy to undestand. He has no time for slackers but he makes it easy enough!
I had never loved Math before I met Chris. He is not only a mathematician but also a "math magician"-- who always turns complex concepts into the easiest ones. I strongly recommand to go for him!! Even though he is a though, he shows kindness by giving bonus away for free frequently.
Unfortunatly, this guy is not what he is cracked up to be. His classes have a HUGE failure rate. If you are in his class, make sure you know the VERY VERY HARD questions. Fun challenge for those who know their stuff; stay away if you are 'alright' or have troubles with math - he wont make it easy.
Great teacher, Very thorough, makes you think and puts yu on the spot if you are noisy but not critical. Wants you to do well. If the class doesn't he gives bonus tests just to boost your marks.

you either like him or you don't. i thought he was a bit of a dick, but i worked hard and did ok in the course.i don't like his style though.
He is like an sour candy. Nasty and wierd at first, but once you get past that, very enjoyable! Also super helpful one on one. He really cares about his students, but a hard marker.
The biggest a-hole I've ever met in my life. Have pneumonia or giving birth and can't make it to class? Oh well, you still get a zero on the test. If you don't know an answer, he'll actually stand there and call you stupid. And I'm the one with a 94% in the class. *shudder*
Funny in a weird way very clear, and very helpful one on one but no sympathy for missing a day.
I don't understand why people don't give him good comments. He is a weired old guy, but a fair marker. As long as u go to class, he upgrades ur marks automatically. I am not saying you don't have to work hard. No pain no gain! I personally love him very much. Work hard or he will fail u.
Horrible, negative, rude, very difficult to follow. Why would camosun allow this guy to work for them, what a shame, please save your money and time and take math with tschritter, r...
Terrible. The a-hole told us to ignore a specific form of answer and on the final everything had to be answered in that specific form GO FIGURE..totally did not prepare me for calculus..as previously suggested..this is a waste of money..save your cash. he liked to single out specific students and call on them all the time in class..
Strange teacher. He's very easy to follow in class, but his tests are difficult and he marks very hard. You will get no marks for half an answer. He was okay for Pre Calculus, but once you get harder than that, i'd say stay clear of him.
Chris seemed to me to be a bitter and cynical human being. I find this kind of person to be a poor choice for this kind of career. Teachers need to be liked and respected by the students. I found that he lacked both. His massive intellect made it hard for him to understand why students had a hard time learning in his classes. He is a poor teacher.
Attend class and do your homework. All of it, everyday. This is how to do well in calculus. If you have trouble, get help ASAP. But he has no time for slackers. And don't day dream in class, he will catch you and ask you a question.
Doesn't give a rats @$$ about what people think of him. Helpful if you go to his office. Made class entertaining. Grows on you like a fungus.
Odgers is arrogant. His humour may grow on you but he soon oversteps his boundaries and you realize that he really doesn't care about the welfare of his students. I am embarrassed that Camosun College has employed him and I'm sorry that I wasted my money.
He doesn't know how to communicate with other people, especially students. His tests are hard to understand, since he used hand writing on tests when I took his course.
homework and tests def arent the same!! goodluck to any fool taking his class. he also wears the same pants everyday and plain diff shades of blue tshirts. looks like he rolled outta bed each mornin and hopped on his "motorcycle"
Nice Guy. Hard marker. Quiz are hard but bouns questions are always available. Pop Quizs are always given on Friday which most people do not attend the class. You need to attend all the class in order to have a good grade
definatly is not the best math teacher at camosun, and not so specif on the course material. tend to cover non exam specific material.
Tough but fair. I liked the class and definately learned alot!
Great teacher, one of the best math teachers I ever had. Teaches course material in a very comprehensive manner, cares for his students. I never needed extra help so I can't comment on that, but judging from his lectures he is very helpful outside of the class as well. And to all who gave him low ratings - I really don't see why. He's great imo.
he is by far the worst teacher i have ever had in my life. Who ever hired him should be fired along with Chris.
Just bad.
Chris is not the best math teacher I've ever had. He undoubtedly knwos his stuff, but he has trouble interacting and helping people. It is nearly impossible to get a straight answer or have a discussion with him. If you are taking math 100, for your own good, take it with some one else.
Great, just perfect. He teaches the way I love it; intuitively. I never had to study for his tests because I never had to go out and memorize theories or notes, you just get the feel of them. Some think he's a tough marker, but I think he marks very fairly. He always says what he's looking for on a test (besides, he always gives bonus questions!).
the worst rubbish i have ever seen, don't choose him, you will cry. no organize, bad hand writing, sucked teaching method, i did learn nothing from that guy.
i think he has no enthusiasm in teaching at all,'cause he always writes down uncompleted solutions on board. his note is just tough and useless, if you want to choose him, i prefer you to have well background of that. He isn't happy to answer students questions, but always ask them to read back the tough note. Too much slang on the class though.
i don't know what he is doing just very bad
He always wears BLUE SHIRTS and JEANS. He is a warm guy honestly. His appearance looks so cold but he considered my situation. Get this teacher.
He has a VERY dry sense of humour. Can be a sarcastic jerk. It is clear he likes the subject, but he doesn't seem to have patience for those who know less than him.
He was very straight forward... can sometimes get going a little too fast but is willing to stop and go back if you have a question. Tests are very easy as long as you do all the homework and understand the basic concepts. Overall a good class!
Very clear instruction on the plus side. The down side is that his tests are not tests per se... rather, they are insidious attempts to ruin students grades with only vague similarity to the homework assigned. Bottom line... If you're after a premium comprehension of math, but don't care about getting a mark to reflect that, he's top shelf.
From many professors I've had, this guy would be the worst. Me and some of my friends had to drop the class at the 2nd month because of his incapability to do his job. He would be an alright professor if the students can study by themselves, which encounters the whole point of being a professor. Very unorganized. The only useless teacher I've had.
Always willing to do several examples on the board during class. The transition between review and new material is very smooth.
You can tell Chris knows what he's talking about and he can relate well to the class. He is stern but fun and really cares about students understanding the material. People who have said he is a bad teacher probably just slacked off and didn't do their homework. I suck at math but got an A because I did my homework and attended class regularly.
He is not a good teacher!! the stuff he teach in the class is super easy and unorganised. BUT, when it turn to the exam is super hard, and some sth he even did't teach clearly on the class.
Good teacher
I do not recommend him. He does not care if your struggling, or if you have questions. Don't bother asking, he is very unhelpful. Just don't do it.
Well he's good at math, but not realy good at teaching. His classes are not that in order...
Not a good teacher, I think he is not a fair marker.
the worst teacher i have ever seen, plz don't choose him. no organize, bad hand writing, sucked teaching method, i did learn nothing from that guy.
I don't he is good at teaching ! No organiz not make sense answer and dont ask him question because he only can tell u that u r wrong, then he could not explain. Thx
u have to study by urself when u have chosen this guy, no really good teacher. Like talking with his own in class . As other said , not a fair marker, and not good at teaching .
Like most of raters said,we can't take his class. Not a fair marker. Eventhougt ur answer is right, he thinks u r wrong then u r wrong with no reason. That s funny! I saw a friend argue with him:) he said that s what he like.
not a good teacher . he seems not fit to be a teacher.
the same commond..
Chris is a funny guy, kind of strange and wears the same outfit everyday, but he knows his stuff and presents everything VERY clearly. He lets students know the outline of all the tests so if you show up to class you'll know exactly what you'll be quizzed on. He's just the most literal, straightforward person on campus is all.
His examples are very helpful and clear, but tests are quite difficult
He's a bit quirky in his ways, same attire every day, but he is very straight forward. His tests are tough, but extremely fair. They are created out of in class board questions. Did not use textbook much, but beneficial to have. Full attendance is recommended to receive a justified grade. Really good. Very thorough.
People complain Chris is hard but I think he's very easy. If you study you will definitely get at least a B+ in his finite math class. He's very through and helpful. Full attendance is highly recommended.
Math was my weakest subject but Chris made the material easy to understand and learn.. even enjoyable! Show up to every class, test Qs from in class notes.
Great teacher. Come to class and you will get an A+. All of his test material is from class. He is a funny guy and makes the class very enjoyable
Chris was an awesome teacher, I'm not very good at math but I worked hard and Chris recognized that and helped me when he could. I still go to him for advice about other math classes even though he is not my teacher anymore. DO THE HOMEWORK, this is college not high school, you have to do the work.
I have heard so many people talk about his unfair marks. People drop his class/switch teachers that were failing and end up getting As in other sections. Math 115 is an important course for everyone who takes it. This guy will waste your time and money. I was in his pre-calculus class and he didn't even teach the calculus section. In pre-calculus.
I went into science as my major because I appreciate a definitive right or wrong answer. Be it any subject other than math or science (english, philosophy) and the student is at the mercy of the objectiveness of the professor.. Not with this "professor". With him if he doesn't like you, you are taking (and paying good money for) the course again.
I will not comment on his demeanor as a person, but as an educator, he should not have the right to be around others. I have seen, and heard of instances to lengthy to disclose where he has not only failed to, but denied help to students. His notes are unclear, easy to be missed with his dry humor taking precedence. Very rude one on one. Avoid.
tough. do your homework and attend classes, its the only way to succeed. He will recognize your effort and be more helpful
Anyone who got a crap mark in his class obviously didn't show up at all or didn't put in enough effort. He is hilarious, and the best teacher I have ever had. If you work hard, he'll recognize that and be willing to help you. I spent more time in his office than with any other teacher combined. Despite that, he was always happy to help. GO TO CLASS
Fantastic mathematician, bad teacher. Expects you to teach yourself with guidance from him in lectures... doesn't help if you don't know the material (duh). You have to fight tooth and nail for every part mark on tests but can easily lose more than half possible points from a tiny mistake, and he admits that some questions are ridiculous. Wtf.
One of those show up right on time and straight to the board profs. No greetings, just straight to the board. The class is basically he does examples and you take the notes, then suggested homework for everything done that day. Repeat until test on the chapter. Basic strict teacher nothing more nothing less
I found that he gets the material across easy enough, but if you don't copy down EXACTLY and I mean Exactly what he does on the board and take in everything that he says, you will lose marks for ridiculous things on your test. If you aren't meticulous with your answers then don't bother. It's his way or the Highway, basically.
I had Chris as a professor over 20 years ago and it seems nothing has changed. He knows his stuff, provides clear and concise examples of difficult questions and assesses students on the samesimilar questions. Lazy students or those that struggle with math will struggle with the course material at no fault of the teacher (it is calculus afterall)
He is the worst instructor i have ever seen. He can be a pro mathematicians but definitely not a teacher. He doesn't really care whether you learn. No assignment, No review. All he will do for the course is to spend a few hours per week teaching, a little time digging into your quiz to penalize you, and nothing else. Be careful
GREAT teacher. Hilarious, straight froward, doesn't take bullsh*t. If you study, ask for help and apply yourself you will do great. Exams reflect notes taken in class exactly. Attendance is key. I wish he taught all my classes!
Chris turned out to be a fantastic teacher. He is not very friendly and kinda grumpy sometimes, but he is there to teach not to be your friend. He also has a good sense of humour. overall, awesome professor.
he is a great mathematician but terrible teacher! no feedback! no review! has his own way of grading! no explanation whY! overall an interesting character! stubborn and very very old fashion!
Terrible prof, does not explain things at all, just writes the question and then the answer, no clarity, no actual written notes showing steps and showing WHY its the answer, did not pass because of his teaching skills, DONT TAKE HIM IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH MATH!!
I took math 108 with chris after having passed the technician calculus course. He marked me wrong on a question i got right and exclaimed that he didn't like how i got the answer and gave me 2/5. He then used the double derivative, which is what i did, in class to show everybody a fast way. be very detailed and correct for him. great teacher,
A large amount of the class is failing this course. He expects perfection and doesn't care if you understand it or not. Hopefully I never have to take a class with him again.
Chris is always there for his students if they need extra help or feedback. Truly a great instructor!
He would show up, not say a word and start writing on the board. He will answer your questions by simply just writing another example down. Study your ass off or go to office hours if you want a good grade. He ended class early almost every single day as soon as he's done his lesson.
Worst Prof I've ever had. If math is an even remotely tough subject for you, DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH CHRIS ODGERS. His lectures consist of him solving problems on the chalkboard without explaining anything, and he gets cranky and does another problem the exact same way instead of explaining if you ask for clarification. Waste of money and time!
AVOID! One of the worst and most boring classes I have ever taken. miss a class? good luck catching up. He is one of those profs who walk in to class, and straight to the board. Very old teaching style, and grading criteria. Lesson is Question/Answer, little explanation. Tests are long and challenging. Looks for any small mistake to deduct marks.
All tests reflect the lectures to the point where there's almost no point in buying the textbook, it won't help you. Study prep assigned after each class out of the book is easy but the test will be something entirely different. Limited examples he gives in class is not enough for most of the students. Literally not enough accurate study material.
It helps to participate in class. He explains material clearly, going further if you need help. He E-mails recommended questions from textbook after class, and is not formally assigned. His tests reflect lecture material and textbook, offering bonus questions at the end if time permits. Grade criteria: 50% tests, 50% final. SHOW YOUR WORK!
Very old school style teacher. He will walk in straight to the board and begin. You'll want to sit as close as possible to read his writing as its very messy. He's an unwelcoming person who'll berate you for asking questions. He's a very tough grader, who will look for anything to take marks off. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! I'd RATE 0 if I could.
While technically he is a very good teacher, he made fun of me on occasion and made me uncomfortable in his class. With lots of study time, and paying attention in class (he gives casual hints as to how to gain bonus points on his tests! smart-assery gets you points, as he would put it) you could do very well. Takes work though.
What can I say Chris Odgers is a smart man but an AWFUL teacher! Some people were just not meant to teach. The reasoning behind my response includes small messy unorganized writing, awful dull attitude, very particular on the method used to get an answer on an exam, loves to deduct marks, sends unprofessional emails, and test dates are never clear.
Questions in his tests are more difficult than normal instructor did. He usually teach some out of textbook knowledge, but not include in his final test. If you want to take challenge, take his class. He doesn't like student use different way to solve questions, only ways he taught in class. So, you'd better to attend his every classes.
Chris is extremely unprofessional! Absolutely avoid taking a class with him. His lecture consists of him writing a question on the board and immediately answering it or calling on a student by name for the answer. If you make a minor mistake on a test question he will take off at least 75% of the marks for that question.
He's not as bad as all that. He is a *very* hard, but not unfair, marker. He has absolutely zero tolerance for slacking. You absolutely do not want to miss his lectures as he is liable to offer coaching for tests in class. If you're strong in math and have a good work ethic you should be fine. If math isn't your thing maybe take someone else.
Gives decent lectures. Thoroughly covers most concepts. Unpleasant to talk to and unhelpful in office hours.
DO NOT take this class if you have any trouble with math. Chris is rude, sends unprofessional emails, doesnt use d2l. When it comes to his teaching he is awful at best for students that need to learn. Does not teach formulas, just does examples on the board. No slides, and he often critisizes the textbook for knowing "nothing." Not helpful o. hours
So many of these reviews in my opinion are unjust. My guess is they did not listen to the lectures/attend class/do the work. I have not taken a math class in over 10 years prior to this course and Chris is always there to answer my questions both in class and online. He is responsive and goes above and beyond for his students if asked. No handouts.
Doesn't show up tho online lectures, so no actual lecturing about what are we doing in the course. Doesn't have any office hours.
doing this class online currently, STRONGLY suggest that if you have difficulties with math do NOT take this class. He hasn't taught us a single thing, he uses the Pearson videos that are short and hard to learn.
Lecture structure isn't that bad, but Chris is rude and unhelpful. His attitude and the way he engages with students he perceives as insufficient perpetuates the culture of valuing intelligence over kindness that poisons STEM faculties.
Chris was one the first profs i had in my post secondary education. He did an excellent job at making you feel like you were an idiot, he would be extremely impatient and passive aggressive if you asked him a question that he didn't think was worthy enough of his time. He attempts to be a strict old school teacher but he just comes off as a jerk.
Took 109 online, Chris used Pearson videos to teach us and to test. What did Chris do with all his free time? He had nothing to do with our education. Mind-blowing that Camosun could allow such a structure. I transferred to a different section immediately where the prof would teach every single day on zoom, as we are paying them to do.
