Nice guy but lectures are very scatter-brained and hard to follow at times.
Nice guy. Ive retaken this course. Last guy i never understood all term. Never knew what was going on schedule wise either. Chris is pretty easy to follow but sometimes gets sidetracked. Material is confusing overall and the textbook is confusing but hes done the best job at explaining. Office hours are only useful if u have a specific question.
He can be a bit scatterbrained, but overall, he's a good professor. He answers all questions asked fully and is a nice guy. This class has some very strange material. Put some work into this class and do all the homework and you should get a good grade. Not too hard.
Nice guy but difficult to understand.
Took 2 classes with this prof. Series and sequences was very manageable, all went well. However, Diff EQ was a total mess. Lectures were impenetrable, taught myself everything out of the book. Doesn't always communicate well with his TAs. All in all, I would recommend avoiding his classes if at all possible.
Absolutely ridiculous! Lectures were sloppy and scatter. In fact, attending his lectures won't help you to understand the material.
DROP THE CLASS!!! WORST EVER
His lectures are very unclear and seem sort of unorganized. He knows what he's talking about, his notes he writes are very helpful, but the lectures themselves can be confusing. Write down all the notes and study, and you'll do fine.
It may not be all this professors fault but this class and him together is a complete mess!! The lectures are short and scattered and a lot of the time have nothing to do with that days group activity. It is familiar algebra taught in a completely different way.
The OSU Math department needs a rehaul. They seem to have figured out how to make College Algebra even more difficult than it already is. I came into this course with A's in previous math courses and put in the effort before ultimately taking a W. OSU in general has turned many otherwise AB students into DC students. Great job OSU.
There are a lot of ways for you to be able to make up for loss points in the class he gives out a lot of labs and quizzes, but these quizzes are all open notes and homework. He doesn't check homework but if you do them you are allowed to use them for your quizzes. His midterms and finals pretty wordy, he is VERY UNORGANIZED he'll jump topics a lot!
Unfortunately this class did not go well for me and I am waiting for my grade back. His lecture's are all scattered and nothing ties into anything. Homework to written homework to quizzes to exams are all different. The layout for the final was ridiculous. I'm pretty sure I got close to a C if he curves maybe a B-.
Very unorganized and scatter-brained. He constantly jumped between ideas and concepts without any clear segway. Lectures usually had little to do with the group activities and his way of helping was saying always "well what do you think?" Would not recommend.
This is absolutely the worst professor I've had at Oregon State. If you're a graduating senior, well you think you're going to graduate, DO NOT take this course with him! His class is completely unorganized and he won't respond to your emails at the end of the term, which is when you most likely need to hear from him most. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Orum teaches lectures that tend to be very boring, and all notes are in lecture. The examples he gives are useful. His HW was all from the book, and the TAs pretend to check your work every week, so its a guaranteed 100% in HW to bump up your grade. Be prepared to work to understand 256 since its a hard class, but he teaches and tests fairly.
Orum wasn't too bad. You could use homework for quizzes, and a good 40% of your grade is an easy 100 percent, like recitation, homework and quizzes. He was a good lecturer in class and wasn't disorganized at all. However, his midterm was really hard though his final was easier. His tests overall, are very challenging, and there is no curve.
DROP. Super nice guy but very scattered--jumps topics very fast with very . The fundamental algebra used is made way more difficult than need be. He doesn't explain how you get from one part to another part of a problem. I had gotten all As in previous math courses and this course taught by him is one almost unmanageable to pass.
Orum seems like a nice person, but if you're expecting to get a good grade in the class just by showing up to lectures.. yeah, that's not gonna work, he's sorta all over the place. I see the lectures more as a supplement to fill in the gaps, and feel like I learn more from doing the homework and reading the textbook.
While he was scatterbrained and wouldn't stick to one thing, he did manage to explain everything. If you do the homework before he taught it via online homework you would learn it all a lot better.
Would attempt to follow written agenda for the day but would never follow that due to constant confusion. Very boring lecturer and was extremely disorganized. This caused it to be difficult to trust him, especially when he constantly made mistakes in class examples.
this man speaks in theorems, come to class prepared
Dr. Orum is a great calculus professor who really knows his stuff. He's always willing to clarify any questions after lecture and makes sure that everyone is on the same page before moving on in lecture. His class examples were thorough and would cover every step. He was also very organized and prepared.
I dont understand why Chris has so many bad reviews. He was super nice and everything on assignments and tests was covered in class. If you didnt understand something he was easy to contact via email, I never went to his office hour so I cant comment on that. I highly recommend him, at least for this class.
I think Chris is a really nice guy and good teacher, he knows what he is talking about and wants you to learn. His homework quizzes and tests are all reasonable, and he seems like a good guy.
Orum is a little scattered and tough to fallow if you don't have very good grasp on the prerequisites from the class. If you do know integral and differential calculus, the class is not impossible to get an A in. Written HW is scored on completion and online has unlimited tries with examples.
Dr. Orum is a great professor. He's pretty easy to follow and his tests are very straightforward. Really nice guy.
As someone who was unsure of committing to a math minor, Chris really solidified it for me. The labs that he made the class do were really helpful stepping stones towards tackling the somewhat harder homework problems, and while he is very much the type of professor that uses pre-requisite courses to their fullest, he is very understanding.
Useful homework assignments that really helped with practicing the material. Tests were reasonable. His lectures were straightforward and he explained the material well, with exceptions of the students' knowledge being clear.
Real nice guy and none of his tests try to trick you. If you pay regular attention you'll do very well in his class.
Skips around in lectures. Does not fully explain math problems. Very confusing to understand.
Good professor overall. He is a bit scatter brained during lectures, but that's true for a majority of the math department. He gives good applicable examples in class, and the homework problems are well chosen. You have unlimited tries to do the online homework, and written homework is graded on completion. The tests are difficult but not impossibl
I loved taking MTH 254 with Chris! His lectures were really great because of the obvious effort he put in to help us learn. He can go pretty fast sometimes, but there's a lot to cover. I would recommend reading the chapter before class. The tests were straight-forward and there were never surprises. The online homework problems were also helpful!
While he didn't always answer questions in the clearest way, Orum always came to lectures very prepared and his lectures were always really organized and clear. It is recommended to read the textbook chapters before lectures but not necessary. Some test questions are taken from recitation activities so make sure you master those problems.
His explanations could be a little confusing at times, but overall a great math professor. His notes were very organized and I always felt like he was fully prepared for each lecture, and cared about students' understanding of the materials. Review chapters before class, and review notes after, spend plenty of time on studying/homework!
Good lectures, will answer questions thoroughly well designed labs homeworks are challenging but not impossibly so reading will help you succeed
His examples are convoluted and confusing. He is an easy grader, but his lectures are slow and not enlightening.
Does a good job overall, if you ask him questions outside class he is always ready to help and cares. The proofs and insight during lectures are not saved online so attendance is important, but the grading is fair to balance that.
Nice guy, horrible class. Horrible guidelines for grading homework that he doesn't give great instruction on and everyone is in perpetual confusion. This class is one of the hardest math classes I have taken, including many other upper-level classes. Nice guy, but would recommend a different 342 prof if you have the choice.
Would not recommend this professor for MTH 342. The homework is graded in a very cryptic manner. The tests seem more difficult than the homework. Even if you think you're done doing a lab, you probably aren't. The amount of homework in this class was outrageous. Don't take 342 with this professor.
For MTH 342, expect about 2-3 homework assignments per week. It's a pretty heavy workload. Dr. Orum is a nice guy, but an average lecturer. Most of his lectures are similar to what's in the textbooks, but they're still important to go to as it's a conceptually tough class.
Decent prof. Lectures are hard to follow along, most of what is covered in lectures don't have much to do with homework or quizzes. Daily homework, weekly recitation quizzes, 3 huge exams. Most of the learning done outside of lecture, 3-4 hours per day. Really up to you how this class rolls with this prof, wouldn't take him again.
Orum is a very organized lecturer. Do the homework and make sure you understand how to do it, and you'll be fine on exams.
I'm not even sure if this guy did anything to teach the class. All he does is hand out worksheets and says to work in groups. You're expected to read the math textbook and teach yourself everything. I wouldn't call this guy a teacher. He just gives you the resources to teach yourself. This is the worst 'teacher' I have ever had. Don't recommend. :(
I had Chris for 254 and 306 (264 & 265). People describe him as "boring" and his lectures are hard to pay attention to. He presents all new material in lecture, and I enjoy that. He does helpful examples. Lectures are important, so you don't have to read the book. 254, 264 were great but 265 Power Series was horrible. Poor job explaining everything
Professor Orum is very scatterbrained. His lectures are all over the place. He is very intelligent and understands mathematics well. However, he has a hard time explaining the topics in lecture. He speaks very fast and his lectures are very dull. I would not recommend him.
Orum is a cryptic and narrow grade. Commonly, a sound proof could be given a 0 because Orum didn't do it the exact same way. He rarely taught, so expect to read the textbook for learning. However, I did find his worksheets to be a very helpful resource.
Had Chris for both of my MTH classes, 254 and 256. In both cases (in person vs online) his lectures did not feel very helpful. He goes quick and most of the understanding is found when doing the homework or in recitation. That being said, I think his homework and exams are fair for a 200 level math class.
Dr. Orum's lectures are great, but a bit boring. It is easy to understand what was going on in class, as long as you have a working knowledge of calculus I and II. The homework (graded on correctness) and recitations were fairly straightforward as well. However, the exams for this class were brutal and sometimes had trick questions .
Like others have mentioned, Dr. Orum is a great teacher, albeit a bit dry. He is very accommodating in lectures and is always willing to answer questions. Unfortunately, the class was rather disorganized, and tests were tricky in ways that didn't seem necessary. Overall, don't be afraid to take his class, just put in the work and you'll be fine.
I took this class winter 2021, aka, over zoom. He's very good at explaining things and answers questions very clearly(makes sure he actually answers your question). Class was organized, mixture of online and written homework. Two midterms, no trick questions. It helped me to take textbook notes but not necessary. Could be considered boring to some
Orum's not a bad prof but his way of teaching does not mesh well with my learning style. His lectures are supposed to supplement your reading of the textbook and he does not give a lot of partial credit on non multiple choice test questions which I do not understand the reasoning behind. His lecture are very dry and I had trouble retaining the info
His class is amazing! I took four classes with him at OSU (MTH251, MTH341, MTH342, AND MTH355), I really like his teaching style: clear and specific. He cares about his students and is willing to give us extra office hours if needed.
Orum is an excellent professor. His lectures are comprehensive, sometimes a little fast, but he explains all the concepts of calculus in a simple and logical manner. He engages with the class a lot and will answer any questions very directly and helpfully. Knewton-Alta is tedious and terrible, but i would be lying if i said it didn't help me learn
The class was fine as is, but the notes given during lectures went all over the place with no real order. It also felt like topics moved pretty quickly. I got an A since I was already very familiar with the topics from high school, but this could prove to be challenging for those who are new to calculus.
Chris is great at communicating and as long as you go to class and recitation you shouldn't have any issues. Knewton Alta assignments always seemed way above what we were doing in class but you only had to complete 80% of each assignment to get a 100. He's very understanding and wants you to succeed.
His lectures are very unorganized and gets off topic very quickly. Writing paragraphs of notes with only few examples isn’t how I learn best and that’s how he taught the class. Be prepared to learn by the text book. Grading is also very harsh because you have to get most things right even to get partial credit.
You will have a online knewton alta assignment, a written hw, and 2 preclass survey quizzes each week. I But I really love how he teaches, he's excited about the math and itnerested so it rubbed on me too. Good teacher. Theres a bit of homework, but TBH it's necessary to pass the class, so it's not just a him thing. grades 4 corectnes on writen hw
There are 5 Units, and 5 tests. The Unit 5 Test is cumulative. Very consistent weekly homework load. Extremely accessible outside of class. Text book is free and online.
Very organized class. He teaches you a new topic, gives you a worksheet to work on, then goes over the worksheet as a class and how to do it. His handwriting is the best I’ve seen from a teacher and it is very easy to follow his work. Does a solid job explaining the concepts
I reached out to Dr. Orum so many times for math help, but he never responded back to me for weeks. I asked his assistant to tell Dr. Orum to help me for math because I was behind and failing, she emailed me after 3 days and she said that Dr. Orum recommends me getting Counseling Services. He's not helpful. I'm never taking this class again.
Chris was the only professor at my current three years that ever learned my name. He is very helpful and makes sure to thoroughly answer questions, and has great lectures. He always offered a zoom option and an in person option for whoever couldn't make it to class for whatever reason. Going to class offered a small amount of participation points.
Orum's lectures are very difficult to follow, as he constantly presents new information and examples making it hard to determine what is most important. His love for chalk knows no bounds.
The professor was very organized and easy to learn from during lectures. The class overall is on the more difficult side but the professor teaches in a way that in understandable. There is a lot of material that needs to be covered so lectures are heavy but if you attend it is definitely manageable.
His lectures are mostly helpful but he is kind of scatterbrained which makes it hard to pay attention. The knewton altas are extremely tedious and have the most algebraically messy problems you can think of, many of them also don't relate to what we are learning about in lecture.
Chris was a very good professor who takes the time to answer questions in lectures and do proofs to answer them. He knows what he is talking about and is very good at teaching and explaining what is going to be on the tests. Generous with giving opportunities to boost your grade. The negative reviews come from the class itself not the instructor.
Orum is an ok instructor and explains the content just fine. He Lectures off the board and he can be prone to being disorganized. One thing that I don't like about this instructor is that he does not rescale the grades until week 9.
Took Dr.Orum for both MTH 251 and 254 due to scheduling. Not a forgiving or approachable professor, the class little better in engagement. Homework was 5-15 hours a week of online work tangentially related to the exams, with unclear and constantly shifting class policies. Extremely rushed course as well
Orum is a great lecturer. Pay attention for the whole period and everything will connect (most days) that being said, the class (which orum doesnt have complete control over) is not great. Knewton alta was great in the lower calculus courses, but in 254 it is a waste of time that reinforces nothing. Written homework is OK. Tests are easy.
Professor Orum is not accessible outside of class. Every lecture has crucial information necessary for the exams. Still, Orum uses the chalkboard and does not record lectures or have a Zoom option, so you feel pressured to attend class even if you're very sick. Based on my experience, he is slow to respond to emails and grade exams.
Orum tries his best to explain well in his lectures but can explain things in the most confusing way. The test was easy if you paid attention in class and went to lectures. You have 6 written homework and then a lot (1-3 a week) of online homework (achieve). His TA, Tyler is a great guy and can help you if you need it.
254 is a difficult course, but I felt Orum did a good job explaining the material. The lectures were solid, and lecture videos/supplemental materials were regularly posted on the course canvas page. The textbook used in the course is also available online for free.
Lectures, homework, recitation, book, and the final are all tangentially related minus the textbook with midterms. I aced 3/4 of the midterms relying mostly on the textbook and achieve however the final was humbling as he pulled information almost exclusively from the first few weeks and from previously unrelated content from his lectures.
Orum is a smart man and should be getting paid more for what he does. Having said that, I really struggled with his lectures and recitations because it felt like none of the material he went over showed up on tests. He's extremely old school (nothing digital, a lot of exams, no calculators on exams) and doesn't seem to be prepared for classes.
Some things on the both the online and written homework were things that he hasn't gone over in class. There was a lot of homework due each week, but the test were not as hard as the homework People were in the mslc a lot compared to the other teachers of the same class. He wouldn't explain the topics well, and wasn't accessible outside of classes.
AND THIS IS WHY HE IS THE GOAT. THE GOAT!
Textbook was free. This class takes up a lot of time and is very difficult, but Dr. Orum did a good job of teaching the theory behind all the math. Ask questions in class. Making a study group is heavily recommended if you want to do well. Dr. Orum sometimes forgot to mention some topics but would push back assignments that needed them until taught
Absolutely goated. Don't hate the player, hate the game
Free textbook but you have to pay for acheive. Classes are lecture heavy but vector calc is a lot of material. Orum was able to explain the process behind the math and you will come out of the course with a solid understanding.
Incredible teacher who will teach you what you need to know. If you really don't understand something, go up to him and ask questions after class. He will be sure to answer them. Most weeks, he hosts office hours before homework is due to help students with last minute questions. Lots of homework, but it's all prep for the exams, which are easier!
This is a difficult course, but Orum teaches it well. He clearly knows what he is talking about, and his drawings are very good. He responds very quickly to emails. The only downside is that he taught on a chalkboard which is hard to see when he is standing in front of it.
This class has a lot of hard material but Orum tackles it well to make sure students have a solid understanding of complex concepts and problems. He is very responsive over email and holds office hours before upcoming quizzes. There are four quizzes throughout the term and a final, but they're easier than the homework.
Chirs is a great math teacher. His class is a lot of work, but that's any math class. He's very good at explaining things. If you show up to lectures/recitations and put in the work, you will be fine in this class. He posts notes on Canvas after every lecture as well in case you miss one. There is a textbook but it's free.
Orum truly is the most goated math teacher I've had at OSU. This is a hard course, but he explains things clearly and well. Hes a sweet guy and cares about the student's understanding. Be prepared to take a lot of in-person notes on paper. Sit up front and enjoy the best 254 teacher.
Dr. Orum knows his mathematics, no doubt. In class I just take notes without actually learning anything, and I know many other students do the same. A lot of mistakes are made during lecture which makes it even more confusing.
Orum was probably one of the best math teachers I've had. He took the time to explain things carefully and held office hours constantly to help students who got stuck. This class is definitely challenging, but if you take advantage of his office hours and tutoring at the MSLC, you should be fine. Would definitely take a class from Orum again.
Does not give any study guide for exams. Exams don't reflect material that I spent hours studying, or they're tricky to throw you off. Lecture is decent, but could be updated. I think the MTH254 curriculum at OSU needs a reviewing.
Since I had already learned differential calc in high school this class was easy however he does expect you to already know diff calc and it's just a revision for everyone. However, the ta is very helpful and he is willing to help you learn.
He's nice and is willing to answer questions. Office hours are helpful. However, you really have to teach yourself most of the content. Just expect to become besties with Khan Academy and the Organic Chemistry tutor. Also, never ending homework and a test every other week. He's been nice though.
He is very good with teaching the content of this class. Lots of homework, but it really helps you nail down the concepts, especially when problems just build upon each other. The main problem? The way he ran his two quizzes for the course. There was just barely enough time for a select few to complete a four pager in 15-20 minutes.
He gives study guides before every exam which you should definitely go through before every one. Lots of online homework but they make sure you really understand one concept and really helpful hints on each problem
The class itself is a difficult class. Beware of mini exam 2! It is a very difficult exam, especially compared to mini exam 1. Great professor though, great thorough lectures that are very consistent. His notes and logical process for teaching was fantastic.
I wasn't a fan of the class overall, but Orum isn't bad. He does put in effort in his lectures to help you understand the material, but the questions on the Achieve and even the WH sometimes were miles more difficult than what was shown in class. There's tons of HW, and I found myself needing to go to the MSLC often. Definitely a tough class.
My second class taken with Orum (took him for 251 too). I'm a big fan of his teaching style. Lectures really help to develop a deep understanding of concepts. He's clearly very passionate about what he teaches. Heavy workload for this class but it's necessary to get comfortable with the material. Mandatory studio is annoying though.
Great teacher, his lectures work very, very well for me. Occasionally he will not fully understand a student's question, or will make some arithmetic error on the board, but he makes concepts quite easy to understand overall. I recommend sitting near the front of class so you can see the board easier.
chris was fine at teaching the diff eq material and most of his lectures made sense, though there were a few times when the textbook explained things better. the textbook is free. we had recitation quizzes, which were awful. the questions weren't difficult, but he graded them harshly even if you made a simple algebra mistake. overall not bad tho.
Chris Orum is my favorite math professor of all time. His tests are a little harder than other professors, but I've learned more from him than anyone else. I took MTH 256 with him and got an A+. He had a free textbook which was awesome, but you don't have to read it if you go to lecture and take notes. I also see him at Dixon a lot. He's the goat.
Chris is the best math professor and teacher I've ever had. He's very good at visual concepts and he will always work up on the board. He's wonderful and doesn't grade harsh at all which is very helpful to give us a buffer on the exams.
Chris is a solid guy. He is very good at one on one help during office hours, however he sometimes struggles to answer questions in class. A lot of lecture time is spent deriving equations instead of seeing their applications through example problems. One of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but that's more bcs of the challenging content.
I did not enjoy Professor Orum's teaching style. He clearly understands the material well, but isn't great at teaching it in a way that students can easily follow. He tends to get very rushed and sloppy when going through his examples, making it hard to take notes on what he is lecturing on.I would try your luck with another professor if possible.
His lectures are packed and sometimes gets lost on tangents explaining proofs and why certain problems CANT be solved a certain way, but overall he did a good job and I learned a lot. Lots of homework, but that is expected. Exams were straight forward, but you get no notes or even calculator so sometimes were difficult.
While somewhat hard to stay awake/pay attention during lecture, he is a nice guy that does want you to understand. He explains things clearly, answers questions when they're asked, and will crack a joke now and then. The class was structured clearly and communicated clearly as long as you go to most of the lectures.
He's a pretty good professor as far as things go. He gives you the information you need, the class is difficult but as long as you actually do the homework you'll be fine. I got mostly C's on his mini exams and still made it out with a B.
Chris was very straight forward. He was good at answering questions and you can tell he wanted to help you as much as he can.
I would say that this class was about 70% of my 15 credit courseload the term I took it. It is an insane amount of homework but if you put in the work and complete all assignments you will be successful. The lectures aren't eventful but Orum teaches the material well and provides study guides for each exam.
This class is a bit of work especially if you haven't taken calc before. He's very relaxed and good at answering question.
I liked Chris, he had a very traditional lecture teaching style that works very well for me while also incorporating some group work into lecture/recitation that made the material stick. The tests were much easier than the homework which there is a lot of, but that seems consistent with other MTH254 classes.
Orum's lectures are clear and engaging, though the class can be challenging. Attending studio and utilizing resources like the textbook and unstuck AI are key to success. The workload is heavy but manageable if you stay on top of the material.
Dr Orum overall was great, however, I don't think his teaching style is for me. He's very traditional and his notes can be hard to follow. He also often gets distracted and goes on tangents. The exams were alright, similar difficulty level to the homework. The achieves were incredibly time consuming.
Took his 251 math class. Overall, good time, the class is very lecture heavy and can get boring and there is a lot of HW but he does prepare you well. If this is your first time taking calc I can see how it can be harder but if you are coming in with experience it will be a cake walk. He is very accommodating if you ask though at will work with you
Chris Auram is the goat
Chris is my Goat I'm not even kidding. I failed precalc in high school, so I was very nervous about taking Calc 251 last term but Chris is so incredibly good at explaining concepts that it was all super easy to absorb. He's older, but he is very friendly and really knows his stuff. Best math teacher I've had to date.
He is pretty old fashioned and a little rude. But he is probably your best bet if you are taking vector.
Vector Calc is a difficult class, but he made it a lot easier than it could've been. He has a traditional teaching style, but it works for me. Was very helpful during his office hours.
He is the textbook example of a standard math professor. He lectures, you take notes, you do some homework, and take some tests. Main criticism is that I think the content on the tests was a bit less similar to the homework, but he was a solid professor and you'll succeed if you simply do the work and go to class.
Dr. Orum's class was tough, more so due to the OSU Vector calc curriculum than him, but his lectures were jam-packed with information on the chalkboard so you have to pay attention and write quick. Tests were mostly what you expect, and he prepares you pretty well all things considered.
I was not the biggest fan of Professor Orum. He constantly made mistakes while writing notes in the lectures, and would explain things in such a way that it was very hard to understand. I feel like Integral Calculus is hard enough, and having professor that is hard to understand made this class more of a struggle than it needed to be.
Chris is a funny older man who is passionate about what he teaches. I learned a lot about vector calc from him.
Professor Orum is clearly very knowledgeable about math, but often conveys his knowledge in a frustratingly difficult to follow and roundabout way. He frequently makes small errors while solving practice problems in lecture, which is unacceptable when introducing a new concept. MTH252 was overly difficult with obscenely too much homework IMO
