SO FRUSTRATING. HIGHLY DISORGANIZED. gave last minute assignments, never returned any papers. had no idea what my grade was until grades were posted. gave a few pop quizzes when attendance was low. Overall, I'd rather pick his brain about SOC over a beer vs in a classroom.
I took Chris for three classes. He was a really nice guy in his young 30's which made him relatable, but it was extremely frustrating taking his classes due to the fact that he was unorganized. I had no idea what my grades were until they were posted by the school. I never received back many of my papers that I had turned in over the semester.
Chris is a very knowledgeable teacher. His classes are difficult, but if you put in the effort, you will do well.
He was so disorganized. Gave us 1 paper the entire semester. no exams. Gave a few pop quizes that had nothing to do with anything. He switched textbooks halfway in the semester and then focused on social movements (which is a different class....). He's knowledgeable but doesn't know what he is doing. Class was so boring. Avoid him at all costs.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. Suffered all semester through his class, he assigned 5 papers (4 of them 4 pages, 1 of them 10 pages) when this class is NOT a writing intensive course. I wrote less in my writing intensive. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Cool guy, relatable, and easy going for the most part. He is extremely knowledgeable. Slightly unorganized and impossible to get things back after grading. Just participate in class so he knows who you are and he will grade your papers accordingly.
He leaves grading up to the students. How we choose to be graded. Easy course if you participate. He does critique papers, but that's his pet peeve. As long as you can write a basic ASA/APA/MLA paper you should get a B or A. Somewhat disorganized, but great debates in class and very clear, and knowledgeable.
He is nice but grades really hard the book we used was really hard to understand and he wasnt very helpful. I studied and studied like crazy and he still gave me an F on the midterm and most . Of the stuff on there was correct. So idk wats up with him but I didnt like his teaching method....
Class is very discussion-based which was not for me. The class required readings which were discussed the day the reading was due. The discussions were interesting but I feel like I didn't learn anything which was a little disappointing. Not really a midterm or a final. Just 4 papers and a research paper. Attendance required, must sign in every day
He presents the most boring material in a way that grasps students' attention. After reading reviews, I was dreading his class. After the 1st week I didn't want to miss a single day. Do your job as a college student and you will earn a fair grade. He has high expectations for his students, which is great. He offers plenty of office hours.
Attendance MANDATORY. Also, it's an insane amount of reading, but as long as you participate in class discussion, even if you're wrong or off, he'll be happy. Essays are very technical. He wants a clear argument and supporting body. One midterm. 3 essays. Very knowledgable prof. Will act like a jerk at beginning of semester on purpose.
Lectures are slightly scattered. Attendance is a MUST. A LOT of reading, but I got away with reading a few paragraphs and participating in lectures, even if I was off in my understanding of the text. He LOVES participation. If people don't participate, he gives pop quiz. Easy midterm if you study, and no final. 3 essays.
Professor Pappas has high expectations of his students but he is there to help. He answers any questions and makes himself available with more office hours or even to chat on gmail online. Just do your job as a student and you will pass. He will give you the grade you deserve. Do your work and you'll get an A.
course was not difficult in the sense of tests, but there's a lot of reading involved for the class discussions that are primarily what the course is about. and they were awesome. he's brilliant frankly i looked at this man & could see how smart he was and wondered y he didn't make us work harder. but great. DOES NOT turn written work back quickly.
Chris is one of my favorite teaches at CSUS. He expects you to work hard and write good essays. He makes himself available to students all the time for feedback and essay support. I took him for 128 and 192 and he was a solid guy. I never did any of the readings.
Workstudy-load got heavy by end of semester, and it didn't help that Prof Pappas assigned 2 last-minute papers the week before finals. You MUST participate throughout the semester, or he'll ask you to. Grades heavily on papers, participation and quizzes. (Reading is required for all of that). Best lectures overall, you will learn the material
If it wasn't for him, I would have dropped the class. he does everything he can to help every student pass. his class is far from easy, i hated every second of it, but he's the reason i stayed.
He is highly educated and it shows through his lectures and terminology. We had a total of 4 papers. 3 books. No tests but several pop quizzes (only if no one participated) He wants students to pass so he offers both office and online hours. Helps if you ask for help. Wants students to be able to write perfect papers. One of my hardest Soc classes.
Professor Pappas has very high expectations of his students, through the first weeks he inundates you with readings and he is very intimidating because he is very smart. Aside from that if you actively participate and search him out for help on things that aren't clear, he is extremely helpful. Professor Pappas is an amazing professor.
We had to print readings but better than buying some expensive books. he gave no test just some short papers which was not bad, and we had some enjoyable discussions .
3 required readings, 3 papers. No tests. Material can be dense, but if you complete the readings on time and approach the papers with decent knowledge of them, you will manage. Make this course a priority. It is a core sociology course and should not be taken lightly. But the concepts are interesting and Pappas keeps the class engaged.
This is my second class of his. His material and lectures can be dense, but he explains things in easy to understand ways. Requires participation. Four papers and attendance, no exams. Go to his office hours even if you're a good writer. He expects college level writing from everyone. He's nice to talk to, treats you with respect and kindness.
Professor Pappas is pretty nice, it's just the readings he assigns are so dense and for me hard to get through. His lectures are often taking long quotes from the reading and putting them on a powerpoint, then asks what you think. Only grades are 3 essays which he takes quite a while to grade. A couple pop quizzes but I dunno if they were graded
Professor Pappas is the best teacher that I have ever had! He is highly intelligent & gives great lectures. He expects a lot from his students but does everything he can to help them reach those expectations. My writing skills have improved immensely since his class. If learning is what you want to do, take his classes!
Professor Pappas is an exceptionally intelligent instructor, but don't let his intellect intimidate you. If you don't understand something, speak up and he will thoughtfully break it down for you. There are rarely any class assignments/quizzes, 3 essays and 1 midterm (NO FINAL). He is understanding and does what he can to accomodate his students.
Not a bad Professor. I thought i did bad in my exams, but turns out i didn't. He was very fair when we took our first exam. Takes long to grade papers. Overall, it was a cool class. He has office hours to help you.
4 papers due throughout the semester. 2 papers were about the article readings & the other 2 were about the books. Graded fairly (A & B on my papers). the main course book for the class are just a bunch of articles combined (which you can find online) don't think you need to buy it as well as the books required. Really know what he's talking about!
Professor Pappas is an amazing professor! He really knows his stuff and makes his lectures very interesting with pictures, videos from time to time, and cracks a few jokes once in a while. Really helps keep the students engaged. He is always available if you have any questions, comments or concerns. 3 papers, and one midterm, no final.
There is a textbook required for this class but his PPT pretty much covers it all but in quotes from the textbook. 3 exams, MC and Short essay prompts. 1 ethnography paper. He doesn't really take attendance but does it randomly in class. The material is interesting but he just stands up front so it gets kind of boring just listening to him lecture
Professor Pappas is great! His class was easy to follow but makes you critically think which is nice. Class isn't super easy but isn't the hardest. He requires three essays, a reader, and two short novels, which were honestly awesome books to read. He brought us pizza at the end of the semester so that was cool. Takes forever to give work back.
I don't consider myself a good listener, but for some reason in this class I was able to pay attention quite well. I think compared to other Soc professors, Pappas actually cares about how he presents the information, making sure we understand it just as well as it is written. I really enjoyed this particular class, and am taking 135 in the spring.
Really cool professor, I've taken him for two classes now. Both were pretty reading heavy, but the books he chose for class were very interesting. Takes a while to grade. Encourages students to think critically, have at least one thing ready to say about the readings assigned.
WOW. He is such a knowledgeable professor. He knows what he is taking about. He is always there for his students and makes us feel like we matter. 3 essays and participation/attendance matters. 11/10 recommend!!
If you take your major seriously he is a professor to take. If you're trying to get an easy A, don't take him. He is the only professor that actually grades on the level of depthness your able to comprehend in your papers. Perhaps the brightest professor out of all the professors. But very nice too. He challenges you too be more intellectual.
This class is by far one of my favorites that I have taken so far. Professor Pappas is very passionate, funny, understanding, and fair. There were 3 papers, no tests and 2 books. There are a lot of readings assigned, but most are interesting and everything ties in together. He is also willing to work with you and cares about his students. 11/10!
125 only 3 papers. 135 two exams, 1 paper and a take home final. Lectures are dole because he uses the same block text from the reading packet. Does show a lot of clips and videos is 135. You can pass by just buying the packet and reading it and writing your papers on that. 125 there are two books which are interesting and papers will be on.
I felt that Pappas was a pretty average professor. His lectures could get a bit boring. A lot of reading. Only graded on 3 papers and participation, which includes attendance. He honestly made me feel uncomfortable a lot because he will just intensely stare at the class if nobody is answering his questions. I enjoyed the books he assigned.
His class was probably one of the most boring classes I've ever had. He requires us to buy his course reader for about $22 but I never even opened it. The two books you really need are pretty cheap. There are three essays throughout the semester. Put in effort in writing the essays and you will be okay. I didn't know how good I didnt until the end
Soc is not my major but I took 135 for GE. This class is so fun and so relevant to the average college student. He talks about topics relating to pop culture such as reality tv, popular music, movies and sports. its a great class to get a different perspective on the media around us. his exams are hard, but attendance and the papers make up for it.
Make sure you come to class, and pay attention. It's not difficult as he's a great professor. Incredibly knowledgeable and fills his lectures with fun relevant pop culture. He's approachable and invites you to contribute.
Took him for social inequalities. He has a textbook packet of readings for the semester and has you also read 3 novels. One paper per novel. He gives good feedback and wants students to pass. I thought I was failing when a note to see him was on my first essay but he explained how I needed to better incorporate the concepts. Do not plagiarize.
I like this professor, he really easy and finds a lot of examples that are interesting to the topics he's teaching. He puts things in perspective for me. Not much homework, just do the reading because his exams are based on reading and lecture.
I loved taking Pappas! He is a goofball and loves memes. Lecture heavy andassigns heavy reading. You can get away with not doing much of the readings, he puts the important parts in his powerpoints. He uses big words but is very willing to explain. Papers are easy, exams can be a little difficult. Overall helpful, funny and knows his stuff.
He is an amazing teacher that truly cares about his student and if needed help he would go out of his way to help you on your test and any assignments. i am a business major but took sociology out of fun. But it was not no regret, he truly had me at a moment to change my major from business to sociology. One of the greatest teachers,
Pappas is a great professor, very intelligent. The lectures are dense as he copies quotes from the readings and discusses it further. There are 3 papers, one midterm and a final. He gives great feedback and gives you the opportunity to rewrite a paper if it isn't the best. As long as you use quotes form the reading you will pass with an A
Pros: Always makes an effort to be accessible, clearest grading criteria you will ever see, helpful after giving grades as to what you can do better, pizza on the last day! Cons: Honestly, I got nothing - the class has 3 essays, no tests, can you want more than that? And if you score low, he always tells you how to do better.
Three 4-6 page papers, that's it. Do the reading and come to class with something to talk about the reading, he really likes class participation. Likes to take attendance when attendance is low. He's a fan of Bourdieu and he will make you think things through on your own. I wish he taught more sections so I could take more classes with him.
Three quizzes (part multiple choice part written response), a couple 1-2 page papers and some random questions on Top Hat. If you're a SOC major and have had Theory or Pappas for Inequalities, you will find this class pretty easy. Very entertaining lectures.
If you are taking Pappas for 192, I suggest you find another professor if possible. For 192, he just talks about quotes. That is the entire semester is him just talking about quotes. Your midterm will be you interpreting the quotes and an essay question. Your final is either quotation again or 3 short essays. You have three papers which are 4-6 pgs
Pappas is one of the best professors I have taken at Sac state. He really tries to make a theory class as interesting as possible, which can be hard. There are three papers that have to be at least 4 pages. He has study sessions to make sure students understand the concepts well before exams. He is very kind and wants to see his students succeed
Pappas is extremely knowledgeable and well-researched. He teaches clearly and with the students' best interests in mind. Doesn't return assignments quickly but is not too harsh of a grader either. LOTS of reading that you *should* do but do not necessarily need to for a passing grade. I plan on taking him again; he's one of Sac States' best!
I like how there is no exams in this class, basically just write 3 four page papers, and attendance is all that matters. Makes it easy to balance with other classes. My only complaint is that he takes a while to give you back your essays so I have no idea what my grade is right now.
Professor Pappas is wonderful professor to have. He is hilarious, covers great pop culture material in class, and keeps the class from becoming boring despite the slide heavy lectures. His class does not textbook use per se because he uses TopHat. The exams mainly cover material from slides on TopHat. He is also not a difficult professor.
Pappas is very smart; he knows his stuff. He takes forever to grade papers or exams. Much of the class is him talking and lecturing his own slides, but I would be lying if I say I didn't learn enough in his class. He opened my eyes to what Sociology is all about. All he cares about is your effort, and highly flexible with any student. What a gem!
Pappas is very smart. His lectures are a bit boring but very informative. Graded by one paper and 2 exams and I think attendance but 3 freebies. He is very understanding of his students and flexible with with any student. This is my second class with him bc of how great I find him. Study guide for exam truly helpful.
He ssigns a good deal of reading, some of it can be a little dense but he breaks down the important concepts during the lectures. Super intelligent guy but also seems down to earth and has a good sense of humor, uses memes and pop-culture references a lot to relate to class discussions. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
In our class, students didn't read the instructions on the quiz and probably half of them did bad, but he offered a way out by letting them do the assignments that they weren't supposed to do. Open, can be funny at times (awkwardly), smart and is tech-savvy. Gives points for effort and understanding of the concepts. Learned a lot, and so will you.
2nd time taking his class. He's added test & some in-class assignments. He grades them on how well he believes you are understanding the material. Papers are a must, but it's easy reflection & interpretations prompts. He is known for returning work late & admits to it. His course allows you to be more open-minded & gives different perspectives.
Professor Pappas really care about his students. He offers study sections before each exam! The class consist on two essays and five exams. Not homework. If you have a questions he is willing to help!
Professor Pappas is one of Sacramento's best! He is caring, tech savvy, and motivated to teach. He may take a while to give back assignments, but know that he is actually trying to go over them and not just give a grade. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Prof Pappas!
Hes a cool dude, really chill and all, but sucks at living back graded work. Will take forever to return grades which keeps you i on edge if youre doing good or not all semester long.
This is my second semester at CSU Sacramento, and I've taken Professor Pappas twice in separate courses. Overall, I really like his class. The lectures are very laid back and clear. His exam guides is very clear and he always have study sessions where students ask questions and he answers them or shows students where to find the answers.
Despite the great reviews he receives, I hesitated to take his courses until my last semester. He is very understanding and willing to accommodate when students ask. Hardly any homework except reading before class to discuss the weekly topics. This is my first and last semester with him and we only had 3 short papers and one written exam so far.
Professor Pappas really care about the students. He offers study sections before each exam and not just one study session but multiple so everyone has a chance to workout kind their schedule. The class consist on two essays and five exams. Not homework. If you have a questions he is willing to help and he wants to make sure you pass
AMAZING lectures and content. Reading isn't mandatory but crucial for exams. He's funny and encouraging. He never EVER returns work but makes up for it in not assigning much and is flexible in due dates. He runs study groups before every exam and paper. Ask questions and participate! REALLY great teacher! (took for both 192 and 128)
Dr. Pappas is an amazing professor he really cares about his students and is willing to help at any time. His course consists of 2 essays and 5 exams which are fairly easy If you keep up with the readings and his lectures. He sets up several study sessions before each exam and provides good feedback for the essays.
Pappas was a good professor and covered interesting topics in Soc of sexuality. I was able to expand my knowledge of sexuality, gender, and sex. It's true that he grades things a bit slow but if you ask questions about the assignments and go to the review sessions you'll feel more confident. He does puns here and there and makes zoom class bearable
I was disappointed since he has really reviews on here but hes NOT a good professor. He does NOT answer his emails, his tests are really vague. His lecture slides are not easy to follow along since he copies and pastes paragraphs. He makes us use TopHat (which is always glitching and i notified him but he didnt fix my grade) which was $40.
Suuuuper lecture heavy & lots of info on the slides. Kind of hard to follow but he makes pop culture fun! He seems like an expert on it. Exams are hard, closed notes/book but hardly any homework
It's college, you need to work for your grade. Lots of readings were assigned, but I was able to pass just by attending his study sessions. Slow grader but students don't pay the price. Makes lectures fun and he's probably one of the best professors that I have the most takeaway knowledge from.
Theory is dense and hard. Pappas makes the material so accessible and understandable. He is always happy to spend more time and answer questions, he really WANTS you to get it. There is a ton of reading, but he doesn't really expect you to understand it all, just give it your best shot. Exams are fair, and a couple of papers. He is there to help.
I think the professor as a person is cool, but the class is definitely tough. There are 100+ pages of reading per week and not really any assignments to go with them. However, for the Exams you have to provide interpretations on a lot of these readings. He also takes a while to grade your work so for majority of the class you dont know your grade.
I enjoyed the material but he's a harsh grader. I wish he were as tough on himself as he is on the class. If everyone in both sections failed an exam it might have something to do with him. That said, he does really care and is very available to students.
I loved both classes I took with Papps! I took his sociological theory class and his sociology of sexuality. Both classes he was very passionate about the subject and I learned so much information. His grading is standard and as long as you get stuff in on time you wlll be okay. Cares a lot about his students
Pappas is a very funny professor, however his lecture slides tend to be overly compact with long paragraphs. He also doesn't engage much with the class, as he just sits in the front and reads off the slides. He also made the class pay for a program to use for our textbook, which sucked. Overall he was okay, but I wouldn't prefer to take him again.
I did not know what my grade was for the entire semester, he never answered emails, and it was so hard to follow along what assignments actually needed to be turned in for credit. He definitely knew what he was talking about and class was always interesting but at the same time hard to follow. If new to theory I would avoid Pappas' class
This was a really fun class. You definitely have to study for the exams, but he'll work with students to ensure that you pass. He gives you points for attending class and there are extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester.
In the middle of the semester he started to take attendance which was scary lol. Also he was willing to help me even though I was struggling a week and a half before finals which is much appreciated.
Most of all put attention to the quotes, don't miss class. Two essay papers. Exams are mainly about explaining quotes and their theories, but not easy if you don't prepare. I was very surprise and happy for my grade, coming to class and participation was part of ending with good grade.
I'v taken 3 of his classes now and I really like him! SOC 192 was my first class with him and it was scary at first because the material seemed kind of hard but when I expressed that to him he showed that he wanted me to pass and do good in his class and gave everyone multiple chances to redo the essays so we can do better on them. (gave feedback)
Very interesting lectures. He assigns a lot of reading but you can get away with not reading before every class if you don't have time and then going over them before exams. He is also VERY smart and you will learn a lot from him! He does a a lot of study sessions before exams too.
He is clearly passionate about what he teaches and has a lot of great insight, which made for some interesting lectures. However, he is an incredibly slow grader. With three weeks left, I still have nothing graded. He did give us the option to not have exams, which was nice. Be ready to be vulnerable; this class explores some "uncomfortable" topics
3 weeks left of the semester and he has not graded our assignments although he has promised a few times he would.. super annoying. He's a great professor when it comes to lectures. This class is very interesting other than the fact he is a slow and lazy grader
Never responds to emails, literally ever, do not expect to be able to contact him through email. He reads off the slides for a lot of the lectures, which are incredibly dense. Most people in my class got a C on the midterm before he had to change the way it was graded. Studying for the exams is a feat. I would recommend someone else if possible.
Professor Pappas is a very kind and funny person. He is extremely helpful when you have a question and is very knowledgeable on just about anything Theory related. I did find the papers to have lots of reading, but you will leave this class learning a lot. I loved this class and his ability to teach while still making the material fun and relevant
an interesting class, you really have to do your part and study. my main issues are that he doesn't answer emails and takes a long time to grade stuff. you have to buy his TopHat book to access readings and record attendance. 3 in-person closed book Scantron exams. provides study guides, use them! mandatory attendance but you get 2 free absences
Never responds to emails and takes extremely long to grade papers. If you have the chance to choose somebody else, please do. You will regret taking his course!
he's chill and all but he takes WEEKS to grade literally anything. he doesn't answer emails, he says he will post something and then plays stupid when it “didn't post right” — when really it's really obvious he forgot
Professor Pappas is the gold standard for sociology. Extremely knowledgeable, very approachable. Always has an answer to a majority of questions, and even brings treats for his students. Genuinely cares about each student and even gave us an extension on our paper when the majority requested it. You will succeed, if you show up and put in effort!
Week 12 and literally nothing is graded. On top of that, he is allowing misogyny to run wild in this class, making a lot of women not come to class anymore. He never replies to anything and posts readings the day before they are due OFTEN. As another rvw said, he says his "whoops!" like it was an accident when he obv forgot. Never taking him again.
He is a good professor and he keeps the class engaged. He is clear on how he wants your work being done but he is not strict. Definitely do the reading because if not, it is hard to pass the tests. only thing is he doesnt usually reply to emails so if you miss class and want to email him, just show him proof of why you weren't in class.
I went into this course very excited, but was quickly disappointed. He always posts things late giving less than adequate time to complete assignments and never gives feedback. We are going into finals week and he has graded NOTHING. He also never responds to emails making it hard to receive any sort of feedback. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Dr. Pappas is a kind and genuine person, but not a strong instructor. Grading is consistently delayed despite promised timelines, which creates stress near finals. Lectures are often read verbatim from slides, so learning depends heavily on self-study and asking questions rather than instruction. You must study, as the exam questions can be tricky.
