Fresh, clear, and untainted view of history. Really good lectures. The facts is the facts, but not boring.
Great guy, easygoing, good lectures. Makes boring material actually worth listening too. Lots of passion, would highly recommend!
Short of George Vaternick, Shelly is the best history teacher I've ever taken a class with! Funny enough, Shelly took his undergrad history classes with Vaternick! You'll love Chris Shelly!
good teacher, makes lectures interesting.
I think Chris Shelley is a great teacher, very understanding and helpful, has a lot of knowledge and background to the topics covered in class. Honestly made me excited going to class. I definetely reccomend him.
I have always hated history but shelley made it fun and exciting. Class attendance is not mandatory but you will want to go. three essay tests are the only homework you have the entire term and if you come to class he often tells you the questions that will be on the test. oh and the essays are take home
interesting class
Shelley is a great teacher. I have never really liked history class before but this class I actually paid attention to. He makes lectures fun!
Shelley is an interesting fellow. He lectures history in a way that makes you want to attend class. He's approachable and always willing to stay a few minutes after class to answer questions. He's a great instructor.
I've taken five history courses at PCC, all with different teachers. Shelley was by far the best. Humorous and focused lecture style. 3 major papers make up the grading. Go to class, take notes, you'll do well. Two other students and myself stayed after class for a half hour to an hour almost every day and talked with him. He loves history!
Very interesting class. The class is very fun, his style of teaching is terrific. I really regret some of the days not going to class. He is a very interesting character and will be worth your time going to his classes.
I LOVE HIS LECTURES!!!
Doesn't require attendance, but you'll want to be there. Lectures are interesting. Grade is based on two take home tests, a book review and a journal review. Loves his history and will make you at least enjoy it, if not love it too.

informative and interesting
He is a very respectable teacher in so many ways. Everyone has their own political views, keeps his in check even with the proding of students. VERY knowledgeable of the subjects, if not he will tell you. You have to experience his teaching. He shows you where your rights come from, and no you have not always had them... hint loves the LA Dodgers.
Great teacher. Enjoys what he does and tries to involve the class as well. Eztremely fair grading, sometimes too much. Always willing to make sure his students understand what he's getting to with lectures.
His lecture style reminded me that I love history, and other students to that fact it's not as "terrible" as it seemed. Always willing to make sure his students understand what he's talking about. Wish I could take him again, sadly, only teaches the U.S sequence.
Shelley is biased. He twists history to prove political points. He is a relatively nice guy but I couldnt stand the brainwashing. If you take his class, question everything, because it will most likely be wrong.
good profressor, lots of work.
Wow, I took HST203 like the previous poster and I can't disagree more. PCC is lucky to have Prof Shelley for American history. He's passionate, funny, engaged, very well educated about his subject, fair, and honest about his beliefs. I took the Praxis II to become a Social Studies teacher and I owe my "outstanding" score to Shelley, seriously.
Boring online course. He said he is having a problem adjusting to online courses, and it shows.
May be a very good professor in class, but is terrible online. Really poorly organized, lots of confusion about due dates etc, and very little in the way of info given from him. Cool supplemental reading assigned. One of the most frustrating classes I've ever taken. He needs to figure the online thing out fast.
Took courses from him 4 or 5 years ago, and one this year. He is consistent and a very discerning teacher. He encourages critical thinking, and I think that is the #1 point of being educated! I am a history major so I thought his grading and essay grading was very lax. But that is also because its a 200 level course and not upper division.
terrible time manager! took two weeks to grade mid-terms. failed to hand out assignment sheets. was not clear with deadlines or expectations with assignments.
After completing my associates degree at PCC i have to say this is the most interesting teacher at all of pcc. Only class i really enjoyed going to his lectures. When it comes to other qualities like helpfulness, homework etc. i'd rate him as average. But when it comes to his lectures he is perfect at them. Best teacher i have had at pcc.
Shelley is a good teacher. You learn quite a bit about US History and gain some insight through his audio lectures. I took this class online, and you will do tons of reading, and at first it's not quite clear what he wants from your essays, so be prepared to do some rewrites. Lots of writing and reading.
I have had Mr. Shelley for both online and in person classes. I would highly recommend taking an in person class with him. Do not take an on-line class with him! He has amazing talent when it comes to in person lectures, however his skills are muted by his horrible unorganized online etiquette. Save some trouble- take him in person!!!!
Christopher Shelley is the best teacher I have ever had. Prior to his class I had no interest in being a history major; but now that's exactly what I'm doing. The class requires a lot of reading but is worth if you are at all interested in history. And if you keep up in reading and attendance an A is easily possible.
Before taking Shelley, I did not like History lectures but after taking him, I understood a lot more about US History and he makes it interesting and likeable. His grading criteria is also fair and flexible and besides being pretty down to earth he's also funnyy which make him a great candidate for a teacher! I recommend taking Shelley for History!
Have taken three classes from Shelley, would take ten more. He has more energy and interest in his subject than any other teacher I have ever been taught by. Lectures are never boring, often relate to prior or future lectures. He does not care if you are in class for a second, but all tests cover what is covered in class. Can not praise enough.
Great professor! Loves the subject and really makes it applicable. His lecture classes are better than the online versions, but he was very helpful in working through the technical issues. Grades pretty tough, but definitely a worthwhile class!
Infectious love of history. Great lectures, but tends to grade harshly on essay exams - he expects them to be conform to a specific formula. Really has a great wealth of interdisciplinary knowledge which he incorporates into the class. Lots of reading compared to other classes at PCC. Focus is on critical thinking. Excellent prof.
I should have listened to the student that said "do not take an on-line class from him". I totally agree. His on-line style is unorganized and at times, sarcastic. The assignments are confusing and once figured out, are more like that of a writing teacher than a history teacher. Expectations far beyond 200 level class. I felt like I taught myself.
Was a great teacher, loves history. He made lectures somewhat fun and interesting and welcomes any questions from easy to tough. Not a strong writer and all of his assignments are about writing essays. I had 9. A tough grader too. I did learn a lot of info though.
As long as you do your essay's then you'll get a strong grade. He is however critical of writing style but does allow you to rewrite everything but the final as long as it's turned in prior to the deadline. The lectures are entertaining you can tell he genuinely loves teaching history. I would recommend as long as you can write an essay or 4.
Great teacher! Highly intelligent, genuine, charmingly sarcastic and funny! Great command of inter-disciplinary knowledge and how they relate to the subject. Trashes preconceived notions about American Indian history but replaces them with genuine insight. Passionate about subject. All lecture take copious notes! Exams straightforward tough & fair.
Great lecturer. He tries to stay fair and honest about the subject and keeps it interesting. Take tons of notes. Most of the assignments will be based on lectures or the books. Lots of reading. Exams/assignments are all take-home written essay. Hard to slack or miss classes and still get a good grade. Highly recommended.
Stay away from his online class! He is vague in his assignments and expectations. He is also extremely critical in his grading of essays. At times it felt like I was taking an writing class, not a history class. Thankfully, work that is turned in early can be revised, but again, he is extremely critical.
Shelley is great. He makes history connect, instead of just a bunch of names and dates. No real tests/quizzes, but a couple of papers. Take good notes, as 80% of what's on the midterm is in the lecture.
Shelley is a really smart guy. He knows a ton about American history. It is super important to take notes in his classes. He is super critical about writing and is very vague in his instructions but he gives chances to rewrite. I have learned a lot from him, I am going to take his classes again for sure.
This teacher is the most difficult professors I have ever had. He knows his history, but he turned the class into a writing class which made me feel cheated about all the awesome history he could have been sharing with us instead of his lengthy grading practices. He grades harder than all my English and writing professors in college combined.
Professor Shelley knows his history backwards and forwards, however his focus is so keenly concentrated on getting students to write perfect posts based on some requirements he does not clearly state in his syllabus. Until you have written your first paper, you do not realize his extremely unrealistic writing expectations he has.
Shelley is the best history teacher at PCC. He does lay out on the first day of class that you will be expected to write 20 pages. He's very clear, very engaging and will clarify every point and question you may have. Excellent teacher.
Ok so I took Shelley during my first term at PCC, History 201- the class was interesting but he has a greater interest in Native American History and focused a lot of the class on that. I believe he should be forced to incorporate more assignments than just 20 pgs of papers. Its not a writing class.
If you are looking for an online, highly intensive writing and history class, his class is for you. If you are looking to learn solely history, then buckle up because this teacher's class has writing requirements that will blow your mind. He took so long to critique and grade my midterm, I did not know my grade until the week before finals.
Mr. Shelley is great! I took HST 201-202 from him, and loved both courses. He turns history into a connecting story rather than a bunch of names and dates, which I really appreciate. There is about 20 pages worth of writing, but it's not as bad as it sounds. I definitely learned a lot!
Comments are blowing the "20 pages" out of proportion, they're segregated (2-6 pages/double spaced), it's your HW/Midterm/Final. Instead he could have asked for memorization and public regurgitation; anyone can multiple choice a quiz--doesn't mean they learned. He provided a way for all his students to learn. Shelley is very knowledgeable and kind!
He is funny and interesting but not very helpful. He teachers super fast and it is impossible to keep up! The syllabus sucks and doesn't make sense. I suggest not to take his class if you can help it!
Shelley is one of the better instructors I've encountered at PCC. His lectures are always interesting, and if you like history at all, you will not be bored in class. The course requires 20 pages of writing over a term, but they are broken into 2-4 page segments that are quite manageable. If you have to take history, take Shelley.
Horrible Teacher! Please don't waste your money on this instructor! He lectures for 2 hours very boring. This teacher has a syllabus that sucks! Doesn't make assignments clear. Gives you about 3 essays on last week of finals. Stay away from him.
Professor Shelley was the worse instructor I have ever had. Although he has a good sense of humor, his clarity on assignments like someone else said is very vague. During class time instructions on written assignments are explained one way, but the actual paperwork given for the assignment is the complete opposite.
Professor Shelley is very passionate about history. Having said that, beware of his online class. He is extremely critical about the essay questions to the point of turning this activity into a writing class on steroids. The mid term is also a lesson in patience as it will take him nearly the rest of the term to systematically tear it apart.
As long as you can write decently you will do well in this class. As for the lectures, they were fantastic! Best history class I have taken at PCC yet.
Overly critical and downright rude when grading essays. I did not find his comments helpful, mostly felt like it was a personal jab. I don't believe that this professor creates a positive and constructive learning environment and would never take another class with him. I have definitely had many more constructive professors. Very disappointed...
Great teacher. Gives two assignments and they are pretty doable. Funny guy and loves history. If you're cool you'll probably like him if you're lame you won't. If you don't know what I mean by that you're probably the latter.
The best teacher I have ever had at PCC. His letures are better than watching a movie, and if you know how to write you'll get an A on your exams (which make up the entirety of your grade.
This was by far one of the best teachers I ever had. Here I was in a class uninteresting then from the first day on after listening to his lecture I couldn't resist the truth of American history he revealed between the Natives and Early European settlers. I only glanced at the text books and got into the Deans List simply by his lectures and notes!
Outstanding teacher! Went into the class uninterested in early American history and almost 2 years later I find myself still intrigued by the vast knowledge I learned from his lectures and the notes I wrote down, barely even read the text books and focused my reading on content given for discussion in class. Highly recommend this awesome teacher!
He was awesome! I never wanted to miss a class because I knew I'd miss an exciting lecture and a big chunk of history. It's almost been a month since his class and I still retain a lot of information I learned from him. I'm bummed I don't need anymore history classes, because I'd definitely take more of his in a heartbeat.
Rude, not helpful and straight up the worst instructor I've ever had. Appears and treats students like he's so smart compared to them. He treats the class as if it is a writing class not history. If you can't write well than be warned now that you won't want to take this instructor.
Great teacher, his lectures were more like stories than dates in an almanac. The papers that he has students write are straight forward and simple to write. He made history fun. I would definatly recommend him.
Chris is a fantastic, vivid storyteller. He teaches history as it should be taught - through the events and stories that took place, instead of dates from an almanac. He ensures people realize the importance of the past and how it relates. Show up, take notes, listen to instructions, write a few papers and read a journal to get an A+ Easy.
Great teacher, lectures for the full class, this is what I prefer anyways
Entire grade is based on 3 essays (the midterm, final, and a journal summary) The essays are really just take home essay question exams. 4 to 5 questions (2 pages per ?). Attending is not mandatory but it is extremely important if you want a good grade. Would strongly recommend this instructor. Although I can see the writing req. being a turn off.
By far the worst class experience I've ever had. His curriculum is bittersweet as the only assignments include five thorough discussion posts and two lengthy essay exams. But his instructions are very unclear and it's very difficult to receive good grades on them. He also does not prioritize his online classes and takes a very long time to grade.
From the first day of class, Chris warned us that there would be a lot of reading and writing in this class. If you are not a writer, and do not appreciate the awesomeness of history, then don't take this class. Personally, I thought he was an amazing professor and had a great passion for what he taught us. I appreciate how he made this class fun.
Shelley is the best History teacher I've had. He's passionate about his subject and tells the STORY in history. Very realistic and flexible with students, there to help them not punish. Wish I could take 203 with him but he doesn't teach it. 3 essays (midterm, final, short assignment) to earn a grade and textbook very helpful, but not necessary.
Shelley only knows a lot of stuff about certain aspects of history. It seems like he doesn't know the answer to any of the questions I ask. Uses a lot of "he" pronouns. His midterm & final papers are really stressful, but take-home. You need to go to class & pay attention in order to pass. Textbook is 1000+ pages & there are multiple.
Chris is a STORY TELLER, not a "history teacher". Very good storyteller, he makes history exciting and interesting. I took him for HST 202 at first only because I needed it, but after that I took his HST 203 and HST 201 classes for elective credit because of how interesting and exciting he made it. His essays are tough so start in advanced.
He's the best history professor I've ever had. But you have to go to class. He's very clear on what he's saying if you listen. If you turn things in on time and set up a meeting with him you can rewrite your papers. He's super passionate and it feels more like story telling than class. I used my textbook a lot for the papers. And I did great
I took this class online and I regretted it immediately. I've taken plenty of teachers that like to brag that they're hard graders. But at least they actually had a presence in the class. Christopher Shelley sends you feedback on your assignment every 2 weeks. Never facilitates discussions. Probably great on campus, don't recommend for online.
Did a great job covering U.S. history. attendance wasn't required. Don't actually need the textbook (just look up things online) Midterm was writing three 2 page papers worth 40% of grade. Final was four 2 page papers worth 50% last 10% was a journal article. Other than that there was no homework or anything. He was pretty funny too
NEVER TAKE ONLINE. Sounds like he's good in person, but taking him online is nothing like the last HST 203 class I took online. Also, a very harsh grader.
Attendance optional, minimal textbook use(don't need to buy.) Pretty easy class and I learned a lot! Only had to turn in a Midterm and Final, they were both essays, and there was one journal assignment. No other homework or classwork. He does a good job going through the major historical events that happened.
Amazing professor! I never cared much for history but he made it so interesting, i got hooked! His lectures are amazing, if you're going to take his class don't skip. He's very passionate about history. Do your homework(not much homework) and readings and you'll do just fine in class.
What an absolutely fantastic professor. Patient with students, incredibly knowledgable, and kind. If only all professor's had Shelley's abilities in the classroom. I looked forward to every class. I'm at PSU now, and being taught by Shelley is one of the reason's i've considered dual enrolling at PCC.
I must agree that he sounds like hed be great in class but the online class is a bomb, believe me. Guidelines for learning are pretty nonexistent and he literally has zero online presence. AND hes a TOUGH grader. Overall this is the worst class Ive ever taken at pcc and probably in my whole life, and I never say that.
Sad to hear he isn't as good online as he is in person, however I have taken him numerous times and absolutely loved each and every class. He is extremely passionate about the subject and gets you engaged in the lecture. I often found myself making notes for things I got really interested in that I wanted to look into more later.
Real easy Professor to work with if you have to turn in your papers late. We only had 2 assignments a midterm of 12 page paper and final of 8 pages. If you show up to class listen and take notes and really try on the papers easy "A". But if you don't show up good luck. Funny guy, well knowledge and lets your redo papers if you turn them in on time.
Shelley was amazing! HST 100 is introduction to history and he was great. I learned so much in this class. Everything he said was so valuable to my learning. I would totally take another class with him. I would say that the class was a little disorganized but otherwise 10/10 recommend.
I have never taken the time to rate a professor on here, but Shelley inspired me to come and finally write one. He is kind, a fair grader(if you turn in anything on time he will let you do it again). He is very respectful to all students levels of knowledge in history and you only have 2 term papers. He doesn't believe in in-class tests or papers.
Shelley is a great teacher he makes history interesting and fun to learn. But if you aren't great at note taking don't take his class. Since there is no textbook your notes from class are all you will have to write the essays he assigns since he doesn't allow outside sources. My advice write the essays on time so you will be able to rewrite them.
Actually the best history class I've ever taken. Does in depth lectures and answers questions along the way without taking up too much time. You only need one book for one essay at the end of the term. Tough grader, but if you show that you are really trying he is a little more lenient. Uses great in class visual aids as well!
Chris has some of the best History lectures I've ever taken. His essays are a little arbitrary in terms of grading but they are take home and he gives you almost a month to do them.
If you really enjoy history, and appriciate a professor who equally shares such passion, Shelley is your guy. Showing up to class is optional, but contain outstanding lectures! Even when the subject at hand is confusing, he provides structure to make it as easy as possible to follow. Plenty of time to read and write essays, with minimal assignments
Favorite class this term! Interesting lectures with a lot of humor and personality, I would've sat through double-length lectures if possible. Lots of reading but very flexible on due dates - no points dinged for lateness, you just can't redo the assignment for a higher grade if it's not in on time. I'm definitely taking more classes with him.
Fall term of 2020, completely online. Friday meetings at 11:30, 6 discussion posts, and a longer essay. LOTS of reading, from an online textbook and outside sources listed on D2L. Extremely chill, (i got extension during finalweek )syllabus allows late work with no penalty, but no ability to redo. If turned in on time, you have the chance to redo.
Shelley is a cool guy, he makes his lectures interesting especially for those such as myself who arent typically big history people. However, get ready to read a lot. Very textbook-heavy course with lots of reading which isn't ideal for those who are slow readers since it can feel overwhelming. Though, Shelley is very accommodating with due dates!
This teacher's lectures are amazing. His lectures are interesting and clear to understand. If you like history please take a class with this teacher.
Shelley is a fantastic history teacher. He loves his subject, and I think it would be his hobby even if it wasn't his job. While class is certainly material heavy to say the least, he paints a beautiful picture of 19th century America. While the online setting took away from his lectures somewhat, I plan to take 203 with him regardless.
Chris was amazing but this class is a ton of work however, I learned a TON from him.
only a few assignments along with the weekly discussion posts but he was a tough grader. couldn't stand to listen to his lectures but they're not mandatory. claimed he would know if someone wrote without intimately knowing the material but he clearly didn't because that's exactly what I did– got a 90. easy A but not worth it.
Shelley is very passionate about this stuff but not a great teacher. His lectures were good but the material was dry and I often zoned out when listening to him. THERE IS SO MUCH READING. I barely got through all the material and you HAVE to read at least two books outside of the text book. only graded on DP and one large paper at the end. Goodluck
Knowledgeable & passionate, but workload was SO heavy. At least 2 books in addition to multiple lengthy sources assigned each week. Grades were based only on DPs which had difficult prompts, and a Long Essay with an even more difficult prompt. Lectures were often difficult to follow & somewhat boring. Taking notes was more difficult than ever.
Shelley loves to hear himself talk and will talk at you for the entirety of class time. He gets visually annoyed when students ask questions. There are only six assignments that your grade is based on they are all difficult and grading very roughly. He also takes forever to grade assignments, but you can tell he is very passionate about history.
Shelley has long lectures and tons of readings for an online course. His redeeming quality is how chill he is with late work and grading. I loved this course because of the material. I am a history buff and this class was really heavy workload wise, so if you're not that into history I would not take this course. Hard but rewarding class!
literally my favorite professor ever. shelly is considerate, smart, he talks to you instead of at you, always willing to learn and change his way of teaching if it becomes too much for his students. he actually asks for feedback. his lectures are charismatic and memorable, I thoroughly enjoy attending all of them. would recommend him everyone!!!!!
Well done lecture and summarizing history in timely manner. Weekly discussion post with sources from him that are due at the end of the term at the latest, with feedback and the opportunity to redo them for a higher grade if done by the weekly deadline. 3 essays due at posted dates. Messed up posting Final Essay req. but otherwise good class.
Mr. Shelley is probably my favorite professor I've had at PCC. I've taken the entirety of his trilogy of American history courses and loved each of them. There were six assignments and late work isn't penalized (5 Discussion Posts & 1 Essay 4-5 pgs.). There is a lot of reading, however, you don't really have to read everything to succeed.
Best: he's a passionate history nerd who gives amazing lectures. You can tell he truly loves history. His late work policy was really helpful. 5 discussion posts and one essay. Worst: he is not the most communicative or *organized*. 95% is the top grade on the essay (40% of your grade). So.much.reading. I'd take his class again but only in person.
The professor was okay. The reason this professor is so average is because he doesn't give any feedback on anything and the class is extremely boring. Take this class if you'd like to do hours of reading. Unlike other online classes, this class is a solo, the professor is not going to be much help or available for communication.
The textbook is required throughout the course, that being said, it took him 3 discussion posts of me using the textbook as a vital source for him to let me know the textbook doesn't count as one. He is very slow at responding to emails and doesn't provide helpful feedback. I would choose a different teacher if possible.
There is a lot to read, but there isn't very many assignments. Five discussion posts and a final paper. He is happy to help out when he can. He really enjoys teaching history and makes it enjoyable.
I enjoyed this class even though it was a lot of work and time. Lot of reading, weekly readings, textbook chapters and a book I had to read over the course. A lot of writing about the readings. Long lectures, but the professor was enjoyable and helpful, and I definitely won't forget the info I learned from this class.
Professor Shelley brings a contagious passion for history. The workload is heavy, with required readings and lengthy essays, but he's accommodating on deadlines. unstuckstudy and ChatGPT were lifesavers for managing the workload.
Zionist. Even beyond that he's got some really weird takes on colonization, definitely shouldn't be teaching a history course. He's a white man who got mad that he isn't allowed to teach a class about Native American history anymore. He's not all bad teaching wise I just really don't think he's done enough reflecting on how ethnic cleansing is bad
The course material including the primary sources, (free) textbook, his lectures, and the book assigned were all interesting. There are 5 writing assignments based on the readings throughout the semester and a final paper. He is understanding and lenient with deadlines. I would recommend 100% recommend his class. You learn a lot and he's great!
Shelley was honestly great. His lectures, although online, were very entertaining. Be prepared to read a lot and the discussion posts mostly consist of writing mini essay's on the sources of reading he provides. He was very understanding when I would email and asked for an extension on the final paper. A lot of work but entertaining class.
Mr.Shelley is hilarious and very engaging as an orator. He also teaches a lot about the history of Native American's which was a refreshing addition to the already very interesting lecture. He is very personable, however he is extremely political in his non-history related discussions and would get sidetracked in that topic.
Boring lectures, and not friendly with students. He also needs to know that this is not a politics class, and if he feels so passionate about Israel, maybe he should go teach there.
Insanely strict with classwork. Extremely boring lectures and not friendly whatsoever. He has no way to contact him, so I can't even reach out and ask where I went wrong. Doesn't allow your own research to be done; either it must come from the book, or that's points docked. I work on something for 7 hours it looks great I get a 70% with no feedback
Class is graded by 6 things: 5 discussion posts, a final paper, and 10% being awarded as extra credit for submitting all work. Grading is fairly lenient, provided you adhere to the strict guidelines surrounding what sources you are using for your essays. You can only use sources that he has selected, which felt frustrating at times. Pretty easy.
