boring classes, hard exams, don't expect to get a 9!
Crazy antics! =) Made material easy to understand with examples. Not so good when he sent his grad students in to teach (confusing!)... or when he cancelled class after we all showed up.
Awesome prof! Very cool! Friendly and enthusiastic. Good class format. However, group activities were boring and a waste of time!

Very fun, very interesting. Would love to take another class with him.
Totally hot, fun teacher. Made material fun with cool examples and funny antics. Would totaly take another class.
yo, this guy is funny. when he can't explain the material, he will say "if i can't explain this to u, the change of it on the exam is low". Well, he is kind of lazy, classes usually end early(hey i like it. and i think his exam is fair.
hard because he is a bad teacher, totally unprepared, complins about how HUNGRY he is all class, gets off topic, rarely goes to the end of class, and gave a final that was probably not even written by him, totally different that both midterms ..Thanks!!!!
he is funny, enjoy attending his class, easy exam
Two midterms were extremely easy, then came a difficult final. Funy anitcs, but material is boring.
Dr. Sturdy's a funny guy; he looks way younger than he actually is though, and he's usually late to class, but he knows his stuff. His lectures are hard if you don't go to class or read your book. You'll get an A if you do the work. Better than 281.
Stury rules. People might slag him for talking about Edo during class, and because Psych381's material is boring, but dude will totally help you out if you need it. Dude is my favorite prof.
Loves the sound of his own voice... never seems to stop talking, but a funny guy who keeps ppl from boring to death. Use a lot of everyday examples, such as food, to explain concepts. Fairly straight-forward exams.
Will actually talk to his students, uses wonderful examples and knows how to gauge his students attention level. If he is getting signals that his students are dying... like on the last day of classes he will let you go early. Awesome!
Boring, annoying, unprepared, UN-funny. His tests were from some retarded test bank that didn't even match the text or lectures. There are worse profs, but not many.
Course material is boring but Sturdy helps you through the classes by making them somewhat interesting. I think he tries to cover up the fact that he's a big nerd by being a goofball all the time (Sorry Chris!) With that said, he knows his stuff and will usually answer questions without any problems
Well, the guy tries his best to get class participation happening (usually followed by awkward silence) and tries to make it fun by cracking lame jokes (more awkward silence). I think the problem is the material is dry, and his lectures are forced to be boring because of it.
Annoying cause he asks the class for participation, but when people don't get the right answer, he just stands there and keeps waiting for someone else to come up with it - tell us already!! Also seemed to interupt students when they were speaking...some funny examples and kinda hard final.
First, way better than snyder and 281 (sorry snyds this guy takes the cake) Sturdy knows wats goin on with his material, he knows everything as if its second nature...other profs dance aroud issues while sturdy addresses them..will help you out if you go to him, hes extremely helpful if you just ask
If you don't like class participation STAY AWAY! Wastes a lot of class time. Really easy second midterm and KILLER final
Great, great prof. It's been said before that the material is dry, but Sturdy makes it way more interesting. He approaches lectures with a great sense of humour, and he's really helpful if ever you have any questions. Even though he knows his stuff, he'll admit if he doesn't have an answer..no ****ting allowed! Entertaining at the very least!
Easily one of the best psych profs ive ever had. His exams are fair, you have to know your stuff. Very clear proff, makes class entertianing, easy assignments.
Awesome prof. The material is just as dry as 281 but it is just as easy. He is easy to understand and more than helpful. Great sense of humor and understands everything from a student perspective. He is also very good looking and makes cute jokes... but he is married :(
Not only did he cancel many classes due to "his research" he tested us on this useless research with NO relevence to 381. Sturdy and his TA Laurie Bloomfield were a joke. Neither one of them were helpful at all and in the end was a complete waste of my time and money. I studied the book only, stopped going to class, and aced the final and midterms!
Horrible horrible horrible. I loved Dr. Snyder's class, and took this one hoping for the same. Sturdy is a terrible lecturer, wastes time in class telling useless jokes, tests on stupid details rather than concepts and never ever no matter how hard to try to understand, is capable of explaining a concept clearly. STAY AWAY!
Funniest prof ever! He isn't very good at explaining concepts on the first try, but he's willing to spend a whole class explaining difficult concepts when we ask for help. Course is mostly boring, but his jokes make it worth it to go to class! It's like the only class I actually want to go to! I <3 Dr. Sturdy =D ps. assignments we very hard!
great
This prof is just terrible! Really lame jokes, wasted class time, useless TA. Assignments marked haphazardly with different paragraphs marked by different people who obviously are not communicating. The only people who like his teaching style are all the giggling little girls who take this class only because they think he is hot.
This guy is terrible. He can't explain anything clearly, he thinks he's a comedian and makes jokes all the time that are completely irrelavent to the lectures. He takes days, like 3,4,5 (I'm not kidding!) to respond to emails. He clearly doesn't put the students' best interests at heart. If he did he would put more effort into his lectures.
Really loves birds. Attendance is a must to understand all those graphs from random bird studies which always show up on exams. Straightforward with what we have to know and very kind when asked for help. His webboard comes in useful. Always prepared and tried to make class interesting. Slacking during lectures can be fatal.
I was extremely interested in Behavioural Psych after taking 281 and this Sturdy made me hate it. Extremely unclear in his teaching adding jokes which are funny, but completely irrelevant to the material and end up confusing students. Twice I tried to meet with him at his office and he didn't show up. Midterm was hard, final was fairly easy.

The reason people don't his class is b/c they assume it'll be easy after taking 281, and its quite a bit diff, very helpful in office hours, willing to give and mark a written project(w/ 200 students), plus give 4 quizes and a midterm. If you're taking the class to learn something rather than get a good mark this guys really good.

Will ask you questions about what specific researchers did (asks you to explain) so know the names of the researcher and what they did.Notes taken mostly from text. 3 of 4 quizes a small paper and 2 exams all go toward your mark. Very nice prof, helpful during office hours. Answered emails promptly. Has some difficulty with explanations. Good Class
ok the guy is not prepared, doesn't respect ID# confidentiality, changed the time of the quiz so some people lost marks without notice, makes lame jokes and sometimes requires the text to teach! and he's a tenured prof at the UofA? dont take the class. he sucks. i work in youth assessment and this guy is useless and extremely unprofessional.

Overall a great professor! Requires that you actually study throughout the term, not just the a couple of days prior to the exams. Fair tests and quizes, lectures are interesting, material is very relevant to the field of psychology and other psych classes. Would reccomend this course and professor highly!
Great guy, genuinely cares about the material and will absolutely explain concepts you're having trouble with if you take the time to ask him. Use the web board, go to class, and read the text book; you will definitely regret it if you don't do all three. The class takes work, but is really interesting and the exams are fair.
He makes me fall asleep in class, very dry material. He tries to be funny, but he isn't. Sometimes picks obscure things for the quizzes. Exams aren't too bad. Wouldn't take one of his classes again.
Overall good prof. Chris tries to keep his lectures interesting with YouTube videos & occasionally humourous jokes. If you do attend class, he hints at possible quiz material. Reading the textbook is suggested and exams are fair (but require more than just a couple days of cramming).
I have no clue why he's getting rave reviews. Quizzes are a pain in the butt. They involve complete memorization of graphs. Material to study for the quiz not as obvious as others make it seem. Obviously teaching just for the grant money. Prof is very boring despite the fact that he tries to be funny. STAY AWAY! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Sturdy is awesome. Quit whining about the quizzes. It made you keep up..and if you can't read a graph go back to using crayons dude. EASY marks. Fair tests. He's awesome. Wish he taught more classes. AND he brings his procters coffee! BONUS!
Sturdy is a great prof! IF you study enough you will find the tests easy. This past term he did not have quizzes. Just 3 tests. It was fantastic!
I think Chris Sturdy is such a great professor! His exams are difficult but the opportunity for marks are there if you study and he gives away what is going to be on the exam! Funny and cute personality, picks on people in a fun way. Engages you with the material using everyday examples. Great Class, makes me want to be a behaviourist!
Really good prof and tries to keep things interesting, one of the nicest profs, i don't know how anyone could say anything bad about him!!
Good professor. Sometimes he talks too much and you lose the point. Should know and study all experiments. Exams are hard so study and memorize.
Sturdy was helpful outside of class. Entertaining in class. Study Experiments and read the text book.
Good prof, worth attending class and it's a pretty bad idea if you don't as he likes to give hints on what will be on the exam. Focus on research and definitions, especially graphs for long answers. Love the material!
Dr. Sturdy was very nice and I found him to be very funny, makes a night class less awful. The exams were kind of difficult and I would really have liked to have an assignment or two to help my mark. He was good looking though which was a plus!
Ah the Birdman, what a character...tells a lot of cheesy jokes that he thinks are funny. It's adorable.
LOVED HIM! Really nice guy! Material was very interesting! Funny lectures! Read the text! Personally I don't think go and memorize everything just really understand the concepts....when you understand them you can pretty much say the results of the experiments....I would/hope to take another one of his classes.
This is material I LOVE, but I did not enjoy the class at all. Dr Sturdy is really nice and personable in class, but he takes forever to actually LECTURE. Way too many asides in his speaking, and he's sometimes distracted by random things that happen in class. His ppts did not help me much. The tests were difficult, and trickily worded at times.
This class was average. Sturdy wasted way too much time in class looking up stuff on Youtube, but the tests were easy if you put a little effort in. There was a lot of overlap with 281 at the beginning of the course but it got better. And his jokes were funny about half the time, better than Snyder at least.
The use of YouTube is not an effective teaching method, Chris is distracted by the smallest disturbance in class (yes the jack hammering was annoying but not unbearable) just read the text book and the exams are not too bad although worded very poorly!
Chris was a nice and approacheable prof, but I'm not a fan of his teaching. Exams were difficult, half of the questions, I didn't know what he was trying to ask. Be sure to come to class to understand his experiments diagrams/pictures, or else you will have absolutely no clue.
Sturdy likes to beat it to Blue Rodeo!
If you want to be tested on your ability to decipher complex and linguistically ambiguous statements, take this class; however, If you would prefer to examined on you knowledge of psychological concepts, best look elsewhere.
Besides being a smoking bombshell of a prof this man can not teach. His lectures consist of his attempts to be an amateur comedian and providing countless graphs of non-applicable psychological jargon. According to Sturdy, every and any aspect of psychology can be related to and proven via ornithological (BIRD) analysis and countless graphs.
Step 1: Learn to use a laser pointer. Step 2: We are here to learn, lose the comedian act. Step 3: Provide your student's with pertinent notes instead of countless incomprehensible graphs. Thanks
I enjoyed his rambling! He had some of the most interesting analogies. His tests were harder, but if you knew your stuff and thought carefully, you were golden. I would really recommend Dr. Sturdy, as long as you are okay with actually enjoying class as a time to laugh and understand in unforgettable ways, like catapulting a piano.
Dr. Studry seems like a very nice man but he goes off in too many tangents, and lectues are very BORING. I remeber his stories of Aeropostal and his dogs better than content. When he does mention something important its very fast/mumbly and hard to understand. Text reading is important, tests are harder than woud would assume from lecture.
Sometimes hes funny. Like when he goes on tangents looking for interesting youtube videos. Hated when he talked about his birds. Ppl other than your lab dont undrstand and dont care! Notes have graphs without any sumary slide or explanation. Kind of hard when looking back to study even if you went to class. MUST READ TEXT! Exams all MCQ but TRICKY!
Comes across as arrogant, and tends to mumble important points. Attending lectures is almost useless as the vast majority of the tested material is from the textbook.
This class was SO boring & hard to understand. Graph after graph with little explanation. The graphs were impossible to see in detail, Chris needs a laser pointer. Exams were super hard. Chris is amazingly hot though & his yawn-worthy ramblings about birds put most students to sleep but ironically added to his hotness in a nerdy-chic kind of way!
Great prof! I really enjoyed his style of teaching and the way he explained concepts. I had him when he had written exams but I guess his students complained too much and now they're all MC.
He's a good dude and he makes the effort, but the lectures can get quite mundane and he does tend to ramble. But you should take his class if you have the opportunity because it's not too difficult. The females really seem to dig him.
Class lectures are extremely boring and confusing. The vast majority of tested material comes from the textbook, you are better off putting your focus into the readings.
This class is so BORING! I skipped/did not pay attention to any of them. His notes are useless and he does not explain things well. Don't even bother going to class. If you read the textbook and study it carefully, the exams are fairly easy. Know the bold terms in the textbook really well!
After reading the reviews on Chris I was unsure about taking this class. However, I absolutely love him as a prof!! I am cureently in his class and enjoy going to his lectures. I find him to be very funny and intelligent and also very attractive!
Very helpful
I don't know why Sturdy doesn't have higher ratings; the guy is good at teaching this course. He gives good examples, but sometimes uses too many bird studies. He's funny in a nerdy way. Exams are very straightforward and fair. It's not hard to do well if you work a little. recommend him!
The vast majority of ratings say the same thing, and I agree. He explains complex concepts very poorly and has ridiculous examples that usually make a simple idea become very cluttered. Not all bad but I definitely would avoid him in the future. Also likes to interrupt students asking questions
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. explains things as if it should come 2nd nature to you, despite you being a STUDENT, incorporates too many LONG studies that mostly consist of BIRD CALLING (his own research), his "guest lecturers" are his own phD students and guess what they talk about? BIRDS. avoid him. NOT A GOOD TEACHER. dont doubt his research ability tho.
I had a natural interest for this material, but he made it more difficult than it needed to be. He'd drop hints for exams and ever use those on exams. Good guy, interesting class, but you have to study your a** off to get a good grade. (by good grade I mean B range; good luck with anything higher, you won't get it unless you're an F'in try hard).
He is a really good prof, turned a subject I didn't find the most interesting into a class I enjoyed going to.
Easiest Class I have ever taken. Get online book as half his MC is from the tutorial quiz there. Don't bother going to class at all. Attended 0 classes from first to second midterm. Read book 95 percent. Really easy
Ancestral Health Fall2011: Really interesting class, material very applicable to everyday life. Attendance mandatory, as you get marked on it. No midterm or final BUT 3 oral presenations (1 with a partner), and 1 term paper. Feels more like a health class than psychology, but that made it more fun! Prof is easy to talk to and really knows the info
wasted our time with his stupid twitter links making us fall chapters behind. so many useless graphs that weren't explained at all and all looked the same. really boring and hard to pay attention. notes are no help at all, have no information on them. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you plan on reading the textbook 4 times to get a good mark
Cool guy. He takes the subject pretty seriously, which is too bad for students who don't feel like taking the class seriously. Also, he thinks he explains things way more clearly than he actually does. One tip is to read up before class. If you think about it, it can all be pretty interesting
I thought psych 381 was a good class. What is there to complain about? there's 2 midterms and 1 final. Exams consist of mc, short answers and 1 long essay question. Very straightforward and fair if you studied. Prof is an easy marker for long essay questions. But,I thought the TA was a strict marker. I would definitely take another class with him!
I definitely recommend this class. Professor Sturdy is clear about what will be tested and provides you with the exact format of his exams. The graphs in his notes may be unclear if you do not go to class, BUT he posts links to the papers that he takes them from on Moodle so you can figure them out from there.
Overall, a relatively interesting and easy class if you don't mind doing presentations. Dr. Sturdy did not really add anything to the course as it was mostly student-led.
Though the class concepts are interesting, Sturdy does a poor job of explaining these concepts. His notes are extremely vague and his explanations do not supplement the information. However, he does post links on eClass to the articles that he uses in his notes. Overall, take this class but try to avoid Sturdy if you can.
It's hell trying to study for this course. Avoid! He does not take it seriously! He trails off, mumbles, and wastes time with pop-culture references from the 70's and IRRELEVANT articles you need to study for tests. As a result, an entire chapter had to be covered in one short lecture, by his grad student, because Strudy was gone for some reason.
Doooo noooot take this course! The course is beyond boring and Sturdy makes it worse. Horrible notes and exams... He isn't a fair marker. And he is way too monotone. Avoid at all costs!
Avoid this class if possible. Sturdy rambles through his lectures and provides little to no clarity on any of the concepts he explains. I went into this class looking forward to the course, but I completely regret taking it with Sturdy. His tests are brutal to study for, as you have to memorize countless empirical research experiments.
THE CLASS IS DIFFICULT, AND HE MADE IT EXTREMELY CONFUSING
Dr. Sturdy was a good prof. His explanations were a bit confusing at times but if you read over the notes and tried to understand yourself it was not difficult. The short answer part of the exam was really easy if you studied. I think the people with the negative comments definitely helped me get a better grade..
Read the book and read the studies. Don't bother coming to the lectures. He doesn't take them seriously and mumbles about irrelevant nonsense. He spends class time talking about birds and making self-deprecating jokes. On the exams, you'll find tons of info that was not properly covered in class. This is a tough course. He only makes it worse.
