Yeah Travis can be extremly tough especially for a 101 class that doesnt even really count as a Gen Ed! He put us through so much work and I dont understand why? He acted like we were a 400 level class! We had a test every other week which was insane.

He isnt the easiest teacher in the world but you can't get a perfect teacher everytime you want one! I did have a tough time in his class but that made me want to study so I could do good. If you want to learn spanish I do recommend him!
The reason he is so difficult is because he is trying to get tenured. Most profs. try to prove they care until the get tenure and then they do whatever they want. Take a look at your teachers its not hard to spot who's tenured and who's not.
Dr. Travis was tough as all hell! WOW, I had to study everyday which was not fun since I had other classes I was taking. He was my first professor at E.C and my first class I had to go to. I never took spanish in my life and on the first day, he broke into nothing but spanish. I almost started to cry. I do admit I did learn alot though.

He's funny and entertaining, not to mention immensely passionate about Spanish. He can be a bit scatterbrained, but that just makes him that much more enjoyable!
Dr. Travis makes learning spanish fun, he has a high energy level when he's teaching and that helps. This class was challenging, just because learning any language is challenging, but I had a lot of fun in it.
I took an online class with him and the class wasn't exactly hard, but it just had a heavy workload. I could not keep up with all the reading, but he always helped us through each week with any questions we had and was flexible to an extent about deadlines.
I had Travis for an online class, saw him 3 times the semester, yet he still knew my name...impressive for an online class. Very passionate about anything he teaches. Brilliant man. requires a lot of work, but if you try at all it's easy to do well. I suggest if you need a lit class and you are okay with reading 4 short stories a week take FL 209
I took an online class to fulfill the lit. gen ed. bad decision i must say. The class itself was not too hard, just a LOT of reading. There was a weekly quiz (not too bad) and a midterm, final and a final paper. The readings were all very interesting but it was still a lot. If you can take another class for the gen. ed. definitely do that!
He can be the best teacher you ever have or the one you loathe until the end of the semester. Some days he's fun and interesting. Other days he sends you e-mail homework assignments and assigns things that aren't on the syllabus in adition to the syllabus work. Be forewarned.
Classtime was used rather poorly, he put notes on the board in a very scatterbrained mannor that was incomprehensable to even the most intelligent mind. I worked alot in the class to prepare for very dense exam material but pulled off an A as others did too. This is college people, don't always go for the easy prof, lots of work but a fun guy!
Professor Travis is very difficult. His class was the hardest 200 level class I have ever taken. He is helpful, but the work load is over kill. I spent more time doing the work for this gen. ed. than for my 400 level courses.
Took the indigenous lit class. WORST MISTAKE EVER.
Dr. Travis is obviously very intelligent, but he expects everyone to talk the same as he does, and fulfill all his expectations. He gives a LOT of homework, as well as a lot of scattered busy group work during class. Never expect to get out of class early. Be prepared to be talked down to and made to feel stupid.
Dr. Travis has a reputation to be a very scatterbrained professor but he is the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. If you have an interest in either of these topics, you will find his class more interesting and his scatterbrained/ unorganized tendencies will eventually dissipate.
Very disorganized and is never clear on what he wants. Will keep you after class if he has not finished blabbing on about pointless stuff. Most boring class, should have picked a different FYS
I did not like this class. The teacher is so unorganized. We're jumping around too much. There is a 5-6 page paper due at the end. Make sure you do your homework and participate in class or he will call on you. It's boring. Don't waste your time. I regret taking this class and wished I chose another FYS class.
Portrays image of being organized and well planned. Gives plan of everything for the class, but will bounce around and dote out hw via email at 6pm the evening before am class. He is extremely knowledgeable, attempts to help where he can, and lectures are interesting. Tough grader. Amazing teacher to study abroad with; he is much more forgiving.
Professor Travis was wonderful! If something was unclear, he would explain it. He was very open to help anyone who asked for it. The class was a lot of fun and it improved my Spanish a lot! I would recommend this class to everyone. You have to put in effort for your grade but Travis is a very fair grader.
Travis was wonderful! He made the material easy to understand and the class was very fun. If someone doesn't understand, he is always willing to help explain the concept further. This class improved my Spanish a lot. The class isn't hard, but you do have to work for your grade. Travis is a very fair grader and I would highly recommend this class.
Travis was wonderful! He made the material easy to understand and the class was very fun. If someone didn't understand, he was more than willing to help. The class is fairly easy but you do have to work for your grade. It's college, of course you have to do work. Travis is a fair grader. I would highly recommend this class to anyone!
Awesome Class!!! I highly recommend it. We studied real problems in the chicago community, met key figures within organizations. A final project is required in which students pick a topic, interview candidates, and write a paper on your thesis/findings. Dr. Travis is a fantastic, passionate and very intelligent professor! Take this class!!!
Very interesting course, great abstract between real life communities in Chicago and Latin culture. Dr. Travis was always available for help and passionate about the course topic. He brought a new innovative teaching style which helped me excel in the classroom.
This class was probably one of the hardest classes I have taken. Way too much material to read but one would think you are taking a history class instead of a literature class! Most of the point come from the quizzes and discussions. There has to be a better way...
Nice guy, but acts like you are only taking his class and have no life outside of it. Sends homework assignments at the last minute and even adds homework after. Does not answer your emails. A LOT of presentations. Unclear rubrics, instructions, and homework questions. Decent grader. Cool topicsreadings, bad professor. Have to work hard for A's!
Honestly, Spanish 102 is expected to be easy, but Dr. Travis makes it even better. He is really cool and funny throughout class. He makes sure the students understand the material, and if the class is moving too fast, he'll slow it down. He cares so much about his students and their learning, and it's definitely evident. If you can have him, do it.
Dr. Travis is great. He's definitely a more dynamic professor, expect change in the scheduling, he is flexible and will work with you and your schedule & accept late assignments. He wants to see quality and that you are learning. He's passionate about his course material and loves when you participate and engage. He's a fun, intelligent guy!
I honestly dreaded going to his classes even though I was a dean's list student. He sends homework assignments at the last minute and updates the syllabus as the classes go along. He is unresponsive with most emails, and is not really accommodating to student schedules for outside help. I learned a lot though, but try to avoid taking him.
Not even halfway through the semester but I wish I would've listened to the bad reviews. No syllabus until AFTER the drop deadline, 4+ hours of hw a DAY no way to get ahead on hw, unorganized, goes past class time. Truly doesn't think people have a life outside of his class. He doesn't even understand HIS OWN ASSIGNMENTS. Cool guy but I can't
Will assign homework the day before it is due and tons of it. Truly has forgotten what being a full-time student is like. Does not respect the fact that a student has other classes to worry about and there's no way to get ahead in the workload of his class because he assigns everything last minute.
Not accessible at all outside of class. Sends you the links to the homework late at night and expects you to have it all done still. Randomly picks on people for participation.
Latin American Literature. Quizzes: tests on the authors' bio info. Tests: identify the name of a story and author from a 1 sentence that could be taken from anywhere in the text--worst part. Online class was last updated in 2004 . Online quizzes w/ questions w/ wrong answer email him about it, but he may not fix your score Don't take him!
If you don't have to take his class, then don't because you'll regret it. And make sure you know either someone who knows or speaks Spanish because if you don't, you will struggle.
INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR! Dr. Travis changed my life for the better. SPN 301 was the first Spanish course I took at Elmhurst College. Yes, I was very intimidated, but Dr. Travis was very understanding of every students' level and was available for extra help when I asked. I may have received a B+ in his course but I was challenged to perform my best!
It was because of Dr. Travis that I decided to declare a second major in Spanish. His passion for the language and drive to learn more was very inspiring to me. His study abroad opportunities are also AMAZING so if you have the chance to do so with him, DO IT! He is extremely adventurous and encouraging. He also wrote me an awesome letter of rec!
Dr. Travis is incredibly personable and easy to work with, and his passion for the material that he teaches is unmatched. He made Spanish so easy, but he still believes in a fun yet challenging class environment. He's also an accomplished author and athlete, so you may be able use up some class time if you ask him about his life accomplishments ;-)
Taking World Lit 209 with Dr. Travis was a chance to see truly how much he loves what he's teaching. There's nothing better for a student than a teacher who loves the content and will stop at nothing to help you better understand it. Dr. Travis really sets you up for success, just be sure you're ready to apply yourself to achieve that success.
I actually took Dr. Travis for three different courses (SPN301 and 305 and WL209), because the way he teaches is how a college classroom should be. He'll help you immensely to head in the right direction, but he wants you to be the one to achieve success, not just receive a grade. One of the most genuine professors I've ever had.
Really nice guy, funny, great with groupwork, cares about students.
Very passionate about Spanish, especially Latin America. Really tries to relate today's issues to what we learn in class. Goes above and beyond the book to really teach students in depth about the Hispanic culture and the important issues countries have faced in the past and also issues they are facing today.
Dr. Travis makes you work hard in & out of class, but it's only because of his clear passion for the content.
I really like how passionate Dr Travis is with teaching But if you're like me who doesn't enjoy being randomly chosen for participation, maybe seek a different professor His exams are relatively easy if you study ahead of time He absolutely will assign homework at the last minute, so beware of that This class isn't too challenging if taken seriously
Hes a really cool guy. He cares about students and if willing to help. Just have fun in his class
I only made it through the first two weeks of his WL 209 summer class then I realized this class is super difficult no matter how hard I tried. Quizzes are ridiculous and could be from anything from the text, authors bio information and very in depth questions that are super difficult. His discussion questions are nearly impossible. DONT TAKE HIM!
Honestly yes--it's a lot of work, but it's doable!!! I worked multiple jobs, traveled etc. this summer and I did it!! You can too. It just requires reading cos ya know it's a literature class. But it's mostly short stories--it's doable. He cares about his students success and the tests were in person (2 of them) which I liked.
Dr. Travis is a pretty good professor. He is busy and might not answer emails a lot but is willing to set aside time for students during office hours or other times. He challenges his students, but it is only for our best. He listens to their feedback, shows interests in his students' lives, and helps out when they need it.
He made this class way harder than it had to be. Even the native speakers struggled to understand the readings he gave. Assigns waaaay too much to read every night. Not even kidding when I say I spent 10 hours reading the stories he assigned for a single night. Unless you NEED a literature credit, I would avoid.
For those who are native Spanish speakers or have been taking Spanish classes for a long time I recommend this course. It is not a course where you just show up and expect to receive an A. You need to do the assigned readings and participate during class. Travis is an awesome professor who cares about his students and the material he is teaching.
Travis is a great teacher and he really care for his student. His personality really helps make the class enjorable and exciting. The only down sides are he sometimes lags behind with grade but a lot of teachers do that and he speaks in spanish alot but that help expose you to the laungage and learn it, it just take some time. Highly recomend him
Professor Travis is a great teacher who genuinely cares for his students. This class does require some effort and dedication by students, but if you pay attention and work hard during class the homework is fun, challenging, and rewarding. If you make an effort you can succeed.
Dr. Travis is a super cool guy! I would definitely take another class with him, he challenges his students and makes us feel like we are actually learning something new everyday. He is willing to help during his office hours or after class. He makes students feel welcome and he cares a lot about the mental health and well being of the students!
online lit class. Prof Travis was clear in how the class would be run/how grades would be determined in the beginning, and it was very true to his word. If you read the short stories (some are interesting!) and participate in the weekly discussions, you should get a good grade. He was very fair, even generous, with grading. Decent amount of writing
This is the one professor that has ever made me question whether or not I was good enough to be a Spanish major. Extremely unorganized and never answers emails, or updates grades. Nothing on the exams are taught in class. I have always been an A student and had to work super hard to even earn a B. Hes rude and cocky. Avoid taking his courses!
Dr. Travis was quite the inspirational professor. It is an A you will have to work for, but he gives you every opportunity and more to pass. If he can make Pablo Neruda and other writers, poets, and artists become extraordinarily interesting for an Accounting/Finance major, like myself, he is doing every thing right. Truly passionate for his work.
He is such a hard professor. He is pretty clear on how grading works but be ready to read and participate a lot in weekly discussions.
I felt that this class is definitely tough in the sense that Professor Travis leaves a lot of readings, homework and quizzes. So if you have a full time job, it might be a little rough to keep up. You really have to read the material and digest the content but the material itself is not hard.
The class was fine, and he's also just fine. He's very disorganized and doesn't tell you how you will be graded, but you get used to it after taking a few classes with him.
If you are simply taking his class to finish a prereq don't. So much work, if you just want an A and meet a requirement it's not even worth all the work.
Rude and doesn't respect students. Picks favorites. Extremely disorganized. Doesn't follow the syllabus so you're doing the assigned hw on time but you don't talk about it until four classes later. Will make you cry and most likely destroy your dreams. Be careful.
There were so many things that made this class unmanageable. He was extremely disorganized and randomly required extra books that you needed to find in a day. He was very difficult to reach outside of class and wouldn't answer my emails. The homework load was obnoxious. Do not take his classes unless you absolutely have to.
Took the async summer WL class & rly enjoyed it. Participation is required. HW was a bit excessive but all very manageable. He made it easy to do well on the exams cuz the prof. comments & weekly feedback emphasized on what wed need to know. Dr Travis was kind, helpful & clearly wanted his students to succeed. Got an A, Id gladly take him again!
Great professor. I don't understand the negative comments. Easy on the eyes as well.
Horrible professor and horrible class. Everything is due on Wednesday which made things difficult with collegiate sports. Unbelievable how a university allows a class about Spanish fiction books from the 15th century to be taught. Expects you to know the author and title from a 5 word quote from the short story.
As much as I respect his knowledge of subjects and content, Professor Travis is a disorganized and somewhat offsetting teacher. This class shouldn't be offered in the first place and should be replaced with one that actually serves a purpose. We had to go to Little Village and Paseo Boricua INDIVIDUALLY, a total lack of safety on his part.
He gives too much homework with multiple readings every week. Does not appreciate if you do not understand material and if you do not understand the discussion board responses. Took this class to fill a requirement and I would not have taken this class if I did not have to. I would not take this class.
Dr. Travis needs some slight help being a little more organized. While he seems like he really does care for his students, there are moments where he comes off a little condescending and rude. Grade is really composed of the 30 billion homework assignments, a group project, and 2 separate personal projects.
Professor Travis' courses offer an opportunity to learn the material in depth. Although courses can be challenging, they are very interesting, and he provides great support if you express any concerns or confusion. I recommend others to take his courses.
You will learn a lot in this class and it is super interesting! Dr. Travis is flexible with HW due dates, easy to meet with if you have any questions, and knows what he is talking about when he teaches.
Dr. Travis' class helped me learn more about Latin American culture. His lectures are very engaging. Make sure to read and do your homework as this is really important for in-class participation. He is very knowledgeable and gives students a fair opportunity to do good on the quizzes and exams. He will meet with you if you have any questions.
Avoid any class with Travis. I was warned by many of my friends and I should have taken their advise. He assigns way too much homework, way more than any other 300/400 level course I have taken at Elmhurst. He is very unorganized and it shows. I was very much looking forward into the Latino Studies minor but after taking this class, not anymore.
Overall course is easy as long as you read a range of short stories along with two short novels and keep up with discussion posts and quizzes weekly. Be ready for the midterm, final, and final essay, which are the only 3 major assignment in the course! The short stories can be interesting based on how you interpret them!
PLEASE DISREGARD THESE GOOD RATINGS THAT YOU ARE SEEING!!! Dr. Travis is highly unorganized throughout his classes, especially with homework assignments. Unless you need a class that is required, please avoid him at all costs! He happens to be very rude to students and calls them out during class He also picks favorites. Please avoid at all costs!
found love in his class. 7/10 besides that.
Overall, this class was a good learning experience. You will need to do the readings since they allow for more clarity about the class content. Furthermore, your participation will help you understand the material since it helps you when studying for the exam. The class is lecture-based, and PowerPoints may not be present.
Took Dr. Travis for multiple Spanish classes. Loved his enthusiasm for the language. He is one of the reasons why I decided to minor in Spanish. Great Professor!
I usually don't write reviews! But the course began with a clear schedule before communication became overwhelming. The professor's essay-like emails, expecting us to read every word, were exhausting. Expecting us to read a 150-page novel in one week is unreasonable on top of writng a DB. The professor is very disrespectful, leaving me frustrated.
I took this class as an AKO, and the workload was more than my main classes. He is also a tough grader he says that he just wants to make sure you are reading but even if you have responses with citations you won't get full credit. There is a midterm for 150 points. A final test and a final paper worth 150 points. You have to work for a good grade.
I thought Professor Travis was very relatable and clear with expectations from the start of class. I heavily enjoyed his class, but he was just a little unorganized though. Aside from that he is very approachable and kind. Tests are quite challenging as well as papers, but if you're present in class and pay attention, you'll be more than prepared.
Professor Travis was, in fact, an amazing teacher; he was quite understanding of his students. Throughout my time in his class, I never felt overwhelmed. He assigns quite a bit of work, but it's always understandable and easy.
This class is a LOT, and gives you little time to work on everything. Very high expectations of us that just don't feel achievable. He is passionate about his work and is nice, but we are expected to invest too much time into this one class. If you don't have to take this class, don't. It is a LOT and hard to get an A even if you do all the work.
