Great course re: health care economics. Go to class. Take notes. Learn a lot. Enjoy it. Get an A. I loved having Whaley. It was my last class of the day at 3:30-4:45 and it was great.
He weights the 3 tests in your favor. They aren't particularly easy, but he gives review sessions outside of normal class time that are very beneficial. Pop quizzes are given constantly without warning, so go to class. 2 short research style papers make up 20% of your grade, but no other homework. Beware: I NEVER received a reply to any email.
Interesting class where he puts more emphasis on your learning material than he does grading. Tests aren't easy but if you attend class and take notes they aren't difficult either. You can argue your point on tests and usually get a few points back from each exam. Study sessions before tests are very helpful. Would take again.
Professor Whaley is an incredibly smart person. All of the questions on his tests come from in-class notes. He knows a lot about Healthcare Econ and is able to make it relatively interesting. Make sure you attend class or you won't do well on the exams. No homework; just exam grades.
Makes you work super super hard for a good grade. I got a 96 in high school economics and finished EC 110 with a low B. Tests are super super hard and studied near 5 hours per test. Homework does not prepare you for the tests whatsoever. Used all Elder's material for EC 110. Very very hard be prepared to work. Heavy homework load.
As long as you put in the work, this is a very simple class to pass. There ample opportunities for extra credit (lab sessions, practice tests, bonus homework assignments). Though sometimes homework would be due before that information would be taught in class, therefore you had to teach yourself out of the textbook. I recommend Whaley as a teacher.
Considering this class was in a massive lecture hall with about 250 kids Whaley did a good job. He lectures the whole time and does a really good job explaining the content. He seems to like what he does and makes a lot of real world connections which is cool. Not quite hilarious but he makes his fair share of jokes.
Great professor! Clear on what will be on exams. Also accommodating with homework's and extra credit!
Best professor ever. Adorable.
Attended every class, still struggled to get above an 80 on the tests. Tests are nothing like what he teaches in class times. Also he gives you a formula sheet but its written with his own abbreviations so it doesnt make any sense to students! Went to him for help, but he couldnt even explain how to do certain stuff. Would not take a class with him
Whaley is an awkward guy, but it's adorable. This class is difficult, so he gives an outline of test questions that could be on the 4 exams, and practice problems for you to do for each one. Going into each test you know 50% of those questions will be on there. KNOW THAT SHEET OF QUESTIONS THAT COULD BE ON THE TEST AND YOU WILL GET AN A!
Great! Take him!
Dr. Whaley they bestie professor I've ever had at UA! Super nice guy and is really clear on what will be on exams. He cares about students and is super accessible. Emails back quickly if you have questions! Take him!
Look, I won't sugar coat it, this class is hard. If you don't put in the work, you will not do well. However, Dr. Whaley does an incredible job of explaining the material clearly and uses great practical examples. He is pretty funny in class and clearly loves finance. He was always available to me outside of class. I would highly recommend,
Whaley is great, one of the best professors at UA. Lectures are upbeat and practical (and sometimes funny). He's very clear about what you should know and gives plenty of practice. Super helpful. Makes incredibly boring material fun. Wish he taught in my major!
Echo what the others have said, you have to work hard. Dr. Whaley is exceedingly helpful though. Gives you feedback on what you are doing online. I got an email from him when I had not logged into Blackboard for a week, he was just making sure I was keeping up with the material. He cares about online students.
Spells out what you need to do to succeed. This class is a ton of work but Dr. Whaley is incredibly helpful both in class and in his office. Makes a boring subject interesting, uses real examples.
Joe is a great teacher even though I hated sales. He made me love the class and is super awesome. Definitely take him
Theres four tests and honestly I dont understand how people fail. You have a list of all of the exact questions on the test, just with different numbers. If you fail, you didnt try. Simple as that. Im horrible at math and school and I got a 100% in the class. Hes hilarious
This class is very hard but Dr. Whaley is smart, fair and enjoys what he teaches. If you do not put in the work, you will do poorly. Go see Dr. Whaley, his lectures are informative and he is extremely helpful during his office hours. I came about every week and he always worked through problems with me. Great professor, difficult class.
I took the Hybrid section of this course, and I'm so glad that I did. All of the test questions are given on Blackboard so if you work through them and do the practice tests, you will do great in the course unless you procrastinate. Easy IF you are willing to put in the effort to prepare for the tests! He is also a great guy and very understanding!
TAKE HIM FOR FINANCE!! I switched into his class from Shamar stewart's and I'm so glad I did. He gives you about 15 optional math questions that will be on the test and then chooses 10 to put on it. Conceptual questions for the test have a lot in the back of the chapters. Makes everything easy to understand but uses all of the lecture time.
It's one of those dreaded classes, but Whaley was a great instructor. He made lots of lame jokes during his lectures which broke up the heaviness of the material and helped keep me focused. The material is hard, but the new way the course is arranged made it less stressful and easier to digest. Take the traditional section!
Doing the hybrid class is much easier because you have everything online and you don't have to show up for Friday Lab (it's only a glorified study hall). Whaley is clear and goes in depth on interesting topics and is lowkey funny to listen to. His tests aren't that hard but you have to STUDY THE CONCEPTS b/c that's what really messed me up.
He's quite amusing sometimes for a Finance professor. The classes are kinda dull, but all FI 302 classes are. Hes caring and nice and will take the time to meet with you outside of class. He responds quickly to questions over email and the way the grades are divided for exams will help you a ton! Would def recommend taking him for FI 302.
Great Professor. A little boring at times, but that's to be expected in a Finance class. His grading system makes it hard to come out with anything lower than a B. Put in the effort and this class isn't very tough.
Whaley made this class as painless as possible. He practically gives you the test with the study guide and practice problems so you don't really even have to go to class to learn the material. He made the lectures fairly entertaining with his jokes and loved to throw out random bonus points on the tests for no real reason. 100% take him for 302.
I love Mr. Whaley. He's always so sweet and happy and you can tell he really cares about his job. Finance is certainly a hard class and I struggled from not going to class. It's not mandatory but it certainly helps and he gives you study guides as well! Great guy.
Dr. Whaley is an exceptional teacher and tries to relay his knowledge in a way that makes sense to everyone even those they are not finance majors. The class is hard, but his grading system helps tremendously. He is so funny and he is such a sweet and cheerful guy! I would definitely recommend taking him!
Taking the online class was a great decision. Didn't go to any labs, only showed up for test and did very well. Not a bad class.
Great teacher who really cares about the students. He knows people take this class because they have to. His homework is moderately hard. For tests, do the practice problems and you'll be golden. He made me enjoy Finance and now its my major. He helps you in any way he can.
I had the hybrid class, which is online lectures & an optional weekly lab to ask questions. Whaley is extremely helpful when you go to his office hours and I credit that to my A+, as well as there being practice problems for each test and if you do them they are exactly like the ones that will be on the test. Overall not as awful as they say.
Very good option for FI302. I was in a hybrid class, so online video lectures (4-10ish mins long) and a weekly class meeting (don't have to show up- taught by a TA), and 4 in-person tests. I rarely saw Whaley, but the videos were easy to understand on my own and test problems came from examples he gave us. If you watch the videos and do HW easy A
Absolutely amazing. So easy. Didn't come to class one time and made A's on all the tests. Do the practice problems he uploads online before the test and you'll make an A.
He's great, take him if you can. Use the study guides for vocabulary and do the quantitative problems online and you'll do just fine.
One of the easiest classes I have taken. Easy A! Didn't go to a single class, just did online practice problems. Very accessible, will literally answer questions the day of the test if you go early. I am already signed up to take him for another course.
This class was not as easy for me as others have said! Finance is not my major and I had to work for my B+!!! Whaley is very helpful. I had hybrid class (online videos) but I went to his traditional section lectures. Dr. Whaley is entertaining and helped a ton in office hours.
Whaley's class was good for a non-finance major. I liked that I didn't HAVE to attend class in order to do well, although extra credit was given sometimes in class. For a big class he does his best to make it personal to you. Tests are a huge part of your grade, we got a drop test though.
I really enjoyed taking him, even though finance was not particularly interesting. He is funny and very fair. If you prep for tests using all the material he provides, you'll be good. His grading policy is fair and beneficial to the student if you're doing what you're supposed to be doing.
Dr. Whaley is a very good teacher! He really knows his stuff and makes it easy to understand. He prepares you very well for his tests and if you just pay attention in the lectures you should do fine. Definitely recommend him!
Dr. Whaley is a phenomenal professor. He's hilarious and his grading system is extremely generous. Showing up to class is a huge help on exams.
I took the hybrid section for FI 302. There are 4 exams, but he drops one at the end. Whaley posts all lecture slides & videos to prepare for the exams. Quantitative exam questions are word for word the same as the exam practice questions, he just changes the numbers on test day. Not an easy class, but an interesting one. Hybrid is the way to go.
Very interesting class. Lots of people complain about FI 302, and you will most certainly will have to put in work to do well. Half the test (the math/quantitative portion) is posted online and the numbers are just changed on the test. My only complaint is Dr. Whaley has a lot on his plate and sometimes it can be tricky to get in touch with him.
great professor. Hard class stay focus and study and you will pass.
This class was pretty manageable. The HW had little to do with what was on the test. The HW was much harder than the tests. He gives you all the examples of the math for the test, it is just a matter of you sitting down and learning it. He drops your lowest test grade, even the Final if you want too. Overall, pretty easy class if you try.
I did the normal, in person class. Slides are given, but attend class to better understand things. Tests have a decent amount of math involved. Do the practice questions he provides on Blackboard, repeatedly, and you will be fine for the problems. Conceptual questions are straightforward if you go to class and read the book. There is also online HW
Dr. Whaley knows his stuff. I was in the hybrid section, online videos with in class exams. He lets you come to his regular lecture section if you want, do it. Great lectures and covers interesting finance news stories to start class. Practice the problems he gives you and the exams are manageable.
Dr. Whaley does a great job at making sure his students succeed. The class is basic and all about learning excel, so he is super straightforward and fair in all aspects of the class.
FI 389 is a pretty easy class that goes over basic finance and excel. Tests are just like the class work excel sheets and the homeworks. There is a lab you can go to and the TA goes through exactly how to do the homeworks. Truly not a hard class if you put the work in!
great teacher and is always there to help.
He is horrible at communicating and answering his email. No lectures you basically read and do the homework and tests. No quizzes or anything to pad your grade.
Does not care about the wellbeing of his students. I took the traditional section. The homework has barely anything to do with the lectures and is harder than the tests. He does not answer his email or try to support students that are struggling. He rambles during lecture barely covering the material that is actually used as questions on the test.
Professor Whaley provides great video lectures and the homework is helpful for learning the material. Unfortunately, he takes quite a long time to enter grades and often sends out mass emails saying not to email him about certain things, so he doesn't feel very approachable.
Whaley is an awesome teacher! The course is either really easy or somewhat challenging. For me it was challenging so I had to put in work but Whaley sets you up for success. He wants everyone to succeed and it is extremely evident. Great grading policy, it's fair and favors students. Great teacher if finance was my thing I would always take him!
Love this guy, considering switching my major to finance bc of him and this class. Attendance is not mandatory but I HIGHLY recommend it. He would take material that looked so confusing and explain it in a way that was way easier to understand. Homework was mainly application (math-type) problems while tests were 50/50 application & conceptual
Whaley is okay. The homework is nothing like tests and he is extremely unorganized. He takes very long to get grades back (especially final grades). Lectures are so long and boring- he always goes over class time explaining irrelevant material. But this class is not hard and I would probably recommend him over others.
Had Whaley for FI 389. Mostly online finance/excel class. He's great, explains thing clearly, super helpful in office hours (did them through Zoom). Don't just email him, he gets a ton of email. Also, YOU HAVE TO WATCH HIS VIDEOS! If you expect to just figure this stuff out, you're going to fail. This class is more difficult than 302.
There is a lot of work to this course online but I feel like Whaley did a great job with recorded examples and lectures to best set up an online format. I thought he was really helpful and explained things well. I would've like more guidance preparing for exams though.
I enjoyed Whaley's online finance class. You get a drop test and the other 3 are weighted based on your scores. For example, highest test grade is 35% of your final grade, second highest 25% and lowest 15%. Homework is long and boring, but honestly if you study his review materials, you should get an A on every test.
Whaley is great, seriously knows his stuff, good lecture videos, clear grading. He drops an exam grade which I needed badly. It is hard to cram for this class and my first exam proved that. Give him at least a few hours to respond to email, he has a ton of students. Super helpful in office hours. I have him for another class in the spring.
Excel finance class that is online with an optional (no attendance required) lab. Whaley does great videos, dont expect to get by this course by just googling things. you have ot watch the videos! Exams look a lot like the homework just slightly different. Class teaches you a ton about tips and shortcuts with excel.
One of the best professors I've had in the business college! He gives you everything you need to know for the test, so just study what he gives you and you'll be set. This class is not hard because Dr. Whaley knows how to teach in a way that's easy for students to understand. 100% recommend taking him if you get the chance!!!
Puts problems on the test that were never mentioned or brought up in class. Makes a HW due the day before the test. And when you email him a question about how to do the homework he sends a classwide email saying the homework is not due till Friday but will still be on the test. Never responded to my email on how to do the homework.
Difficult material, easy class. Lowest test and 2 hws are dropped. He puts a review w/ all the math problems on BB and then uses those exact problems with new numbers, these are 60% of test grades. Other 40% comes from review sheet that you can fill out w/ class notes. HW's are a pain, take 2-3 hrs/wk , often w/ dif. questions than done in class.
Whaley is an absolute failure of a professor due to his disorganization. Every class he says he will upload homework online or that there will be an upcoming quiz, and then nothing happens. He even lost the completed exams of the entire class. The class did not have a single graded assessment before the withdraw deadline. Avoid at all costs.
Whaley is amazing! His lectures were awesome and he only talks about papers. There is NO BOOK only academic papers he posts online. Someone else mentioned the lack of graded assignments but that was not Dr. Whaley's fault. He was kind to work with all of us. Amazing class if you are willing to read and actually discuss the topics.
Mr. Whaley taught EC483 for the first time this semester and man was it a disaster. He lost out first exams which almost resulted in him just weighting our remaining two exams like 40% each. He is very bad at putting in grades. We did not have a single grade in the grade book till after add/drop. The material was interesting but Mr. Whaley tho.
As long as you're decent with a calculator, this class is really easy. Lectures were really boring, and it's almost easier to learn the material yourself out of the book than in class with the powerpoints. At least attendance isn't at all required. Put the effort in the beginning so you don't have to take the final at the end: it's 100% worth it.
Best class at UA hands down. Seriously, I look forward to this class every week. Dr. Whaley is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging with the material. Each class he will pull up and discuss a recent paper, like published a month ago recent. Lectures can sometimes go off on tangents but still so informative. Highly recommend!
Easy class, boring lectures. The exams are split between math problems and concepts (multiple choice). He gives math question examples before the exam. Homework is based off of what you learn in class. 2 homework drops and an exam drop. Exams are scaled so your highest grade is worth more than the other 2 exams, and your worst is worth the least.
Whaley is genius but very unorganized. Pushes hw back every week so no one knows the correct due dates. Lectures are rough and usually the first 30 minutes are unrelated to finance. Does not respond to email, ever. Gives clear study guide + practice problems for exams (very helpful). Grade scale: Best exam: 35% Worst: 15% Middle: 25% Hw: 25%
Whaley was great, one of the better business professors I've had so far. His lectures are good, he does spend about 20 minutes talking about headlines which I enjoyed but I am a finance major. Come to class, take notes, do the study resources he provides, you should be good.
I had Whaley early in the morning and every time he came in and gave a great lecture. Buyers Beware for all who think they can cheat on an exam though. Every semester he catches upwards of 50 people trying to cheat. Very tech savvy and can trace where you took the exam based on what router you are connected to. Otherwise always happy to help.
Whaley's 389 class is all online and not too difficult. Homework/Exams are all on ExPrep. Exams are almost identical to each module's homework assignment. I never really watched the module lecture videos or did the supplemental material unless I was having issues with excel HW and needed to. Easy online course, very excel heavy.
Tests were online. Homework is reasonable and he provides TONS of test prep material which is great.
I don't like his voice, I could only stand to watch the lectures in 2x speed (I took online). Not much homework, no cumulative final. Homework was hard but that's just the course material- the program had assistance built in. Use exam review material provided in bbl.
Dr. Whaley is an incredibly knowledgeable and experienced professor. He is a great guy who genuinely wants to help his students as much as possible when he has 1000+ each semester.
By far my favorite class that I have taken at UA. Dr. Whaley is super interesting and knowledgeable, and you can tell he genuinely enjoys teaching this class and cares about his students. 10/10 would take again.
Dr. Whaley is very kind, great lecturer. Tests are easy if you go to class, and you can debate missed points back. Biggest problem - disorganization. The class was shifted and unclear in grading because he is overworked. Not entirely his fault, but be aware when signing up - the class is a mess. You'll probably still get an A, though.
Whaley isn't the best at responding to e-mails, but he's a great lecturer and really cares about his students!
Had Whaley for 389 and 302. Great lectures and very very knowledgeable about Finance. Anyone that says otherwise isn't paying attention. Go to class. Pay attention. Practice the finance. You will do well if you do those things. Solid guy too
Whaley is awesome, you can tell that he genuinely cares about what he teaches. If you are interested in finance and apply yourself just a little there's no reason you can't get a 100 in this class.
If you don't have a room temperature IQ, this class is easy. For exam prep he gives us the exact math questions on the test (with a video on how to do them). Concept q's are harder, but if you go to class they're fine or join the groupme for good quizlets. People who hate him either put in 0 effort or don't belong in college.
Lectures are very boring and don't help much with the subjects, so I never went to class after the first few weeks, but he makes it so easy to do good on the tests. The practice problems are the exact same as the problems on the test just different numbers. The multiple choice is also very easy. Lectures are so boring but super easy professor.
I thought the lectures were boring but Whaley is a good professor and communicator. it's hard to make a 400 person class engaging.
Not a good prof
Super good professor. He gives you the exact math questions that are on the exam on your review. Super easy and enjoyable if you go to class and enjoy learning about finance.
Can not reach him outside of class whatsoever. Goes over random things every class for twenty minutes then finally gets to lecture material once 30 minutes have passed. Pushes back the due dates of homework which I'm not complaining about but doesn't update study guides or exam prep material in a timely manner.
Does not take attendance but you need to go to class. Bad reviews are clearly not coming to class. He does spend 15-20 minutes going over finance stories. Not tested on this but I like it since I'm a finance major. Really good lectures, know his stuff. Great guy to talk to, just go to class.
Finance is a hard class! Whaley does a great job explaining things clearly. The homework is HARD (use math GPT for help) but overall he really cares and wants to help you succeed!
For an entry-level finance course, Dr. Whaley does a very good job. He tries to make the material engaging and incorporates lots of real-world examples into his teaching. His grading schedule is pretty friendly (lowest test is only 10% of final grade). He offers a few drop homeworks. DO NOT CHEAT. He WILL catch you.
No organization whatsoever. Not a single grade in the grade book the week before finals. Very unclear about everything. It is just not fair to students for this class to be taught by someone who has no professionalism
Dr. Whaley was fine, his tests are very similar to the study guides. I stopped going to class because I would leave so discouraged due to his confusing lecture style. I was better off teaching myself before tests based on the study guide. Seems like a nice guy though.
I wish all my classes were like this. Assigns actual academic papers, discuss them in class, pop quizzes on the readings but grades generously. Great discussions, Whaley is super knowledgeable and really makes you think. Class-wide game at the end that's pretty fun. Come to class, participate and do the readings, it's a great class.
Good guy but you have to pay attention in class. He is pretty funny for a finance professor and gives decent lectures. Homework about once a week, use the exam prep stuff on blackboard, super helpful.
Good teacher. Makes class pretty enjoyable and is pretty funny. Sometimes he will start class with a real world finance event which I appreciated. Pay attention in class and take good notes. Utilize the homework. Take him! Oh yeah, and his exam prep is so clutch!!
Chris's lectures were pretty boring, and attendance wasn't mandatory. No extra credit, but his grading structure is fair and gives plenty of room for error. He's approachable and available outside class.
he's a very engaging lecturer fr; structure of course was kinda wack tho but generous grading and exams are take home. only super annoying thing is that we didn't get any of our quiz grades back till literally dead week, and it took him AGESSS to grade our exams so we were sorta in the dark thru most of the semester on how we were performing
