Brother Wilson is an AMAZING teacher. I have never learned so much in any class as I did in his class. He makes you think for yourself, unlike most other teachers.
Brother Wilson is an Amazing teacher. It's not the easiest class, but I learned so much.
He will spend all the time you need to have clarity on the material. He has very liberal office hours.
Brother Wilson is an amazing professor. He will spend so much time helping you to understand the topics you are learning. He is almost alway available if you ask and will spend a whole office hour assisting you. His class was great and I learned so much that I will take away and use in both my career and everyday life.
I love Brother Wilson!! He is a great teacher. Absolutely puts his students first. Very willing to help. No due dates, we got to set our own schedule, and I learned sooo much. Very friendly and easy going
I loved this class! And I love Brother Wilson! He cares about each of his students, and is always making sure they understand concepts. I felt very comfortable in the class, and I wish I could take more classes from him. There is a lot of studying, but worth it. He helps you live what you are learning.
Most amazing teacher in this department! His class taught me so much and he is willing and ready to bend over backwards to help you. everyone needs to take a class from Brother Wilson!
Bro. Wilson's an amazing teacher who tries to get his students to understand children's pysch well. I learned a lot- also, the tests, quizzes, and such were not too difficult. Be careful for the third test- it's probably harder than you think. However, I think that if a student does what's asked, he can both learn and get the desired grade.
Bro. Wilson is amazing! I am so glad that I took his class. He taught me so much about what being a teacher is really about. If you have a chance to take him then do it!!!
What a great teacher. Always willing to help and knows his information. He is an inspiriation.
Wow! One of my favorite teachers!!! DEFINATELY TAKE FROM HIM!!! He's AMAZING! This is a great class, it makes you think, and it makes you remember why you wanted to teach. Not too hard, and WAY FUN! SERIOUSLY, YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS FROM BRO. WILSON!!!!!!
I loved him a teacher. This is the first class in awhile where I use everything he has taught in all of my classes and also the best part is you dont know you are learning it. I recommend you take any ed class with him you can
GREAT TEACHER. great guy. He is so helpful and fun. class is interactive. i had him at 7:45am and I loved coming to class. He makes education interesting.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Bro. Wilson really helps you learn, remember, and make connections to many different subjects. Though he is very flexible and doesn't always have set deadlines, it helped me to finish things on my own time. He's always available outside class and genuinely cares about his students. I'd take another class from him in a heartbeat!
I couldn't help feeling every day in his class that he was wasting my time. I have never been in a course with less direction and purpose. His instructions were copious, yet incomprehensible; I spoke with 12 other students - 1 of them felt like they understood what he was asking of us. Great for philosophy, terrible for pragmatism.
AMAZING!!! He really loves what he teaches and loves to hear from the class. The assignments were a little unorganized but he was SUPER lenient on due dates. The assignments were based on where the class tools itself. It was a great learning experience. TAKE HIM!!!!! you won't regret it!
YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN. Never mind that he is kind, funny, sympathetic, and charismatic. What really makes him great is that he is a forward-thinking educator. He is one of the few ed professors I had who actually practiced what he preached. He teaches education students to apply the material. His classes are hands on.
Amazing teacher! I really learned a lot without having to study a whole lot. He teaches you the material without you even knowing you're being taught. His course is a little disorganized so it's hard to know when things are due, but he really doesn't have due dates anyways.
This is possibly the most intelligent man I have ever met. I had an epiphany every day of his class, and I always left with a philosophical question to ponder. He puts learning in the hands of the students and makes us back up what we say we believe. His assignments are not hard work, but they make you think.
Brother Wilson's class was so interesting and never boring. I always learned so much and he was so willing to help when things were not clear.
I loved Brother Wilson! Work load is pretty easy. Definetly a thinking class - he makes you want to be a good teacher. Most of the class time is spent on class discussion. Hits more on philosophy than history of ed, but you always leave feeling inspired. I wasn't sure if I wanted to be a teacher until I took this class - now I know I do.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Not your typical professor. He made learning fun. No tests or quizzes in the class. He has readings for each class. Starts each class with a "starter" activity to get us thinking. Good way to learn from each other. We have a concept map and a personal website that we create throughout the semester. Overall, great professor.
Fun, energetic, interesting ways of teaching. But, very unclear on what was expected. You'll feel like you have no idea what's going on for most of the class. Also gave very little feedback. Only 5 graded items all semester, completed at end of semester. Got an A, but don't know how. Set up appts to visit with him to figure out whathow to do.
It was a confusing class at first, but Brother Wilson explains things really well. It was very easy to get a passing grade if you did what you were supposed to.
I got an A. I have no idea how though. He doesn't provide any feedback and when I asked him how he liked my project he said to get an appointment with him and we'd go over it.. I'm not even sure if he looked at my project. But I got an A!
He is the best teacher I have ever had the experience to work with. He is invested in his class to help you become the best teacher you can be. He genuinely cares for his students and their progression to become an educator. He validates everyone's opinion but not reserved to correct your thinking- which helps you to see a difference in yourself.
Hey ed majors, remember how annoying it was when professors told you that extrinsic motivation like pushing grades was ineffective if you wanted real learning to take place? Wilson is teaching by example, THAT's why you don't know your grade. Show up, pay attention to how he teaches, work hard on your projects, and you'll end up learning a ton.
Brother Wilson is the worst. He is super unorganized and does not know how to answer his email. He never grades anything and never gives feedback. You won't learn anything. Take ANY other professor if you can.
Bro Wilson has a very unconventional teaching style that many people don't like. No due dates and you pick your own assignments (no tests) but if you go to class and jump through the hoops you will pass. Easy A! I didn't learn much content but everything Bro Wilson does has purpose to it so I learned a lot about teaching from example.
Yes! Any class you can take from this guy, do it!
I LOVED BROTHER WILSON! Take him! He is kind and caring. And his teaching style is amazing. He makes you work hard for the grade you want, and you don't find out until usually the end of the semester where you're at, but hey, you're constantly thinking about your grade, and if you're doing enough to get there. I loved him. He loves what he does.
brother Wilson was pretty good and demonstrated the diversity in teaching methods (which is good for education majors taking this class) personally, things could've been a little clearer. I get the concept he was going for but it got confusing at times. will take time to get used to, but he's good about answering questions. discussion based class.
Most unorganized, vague class and professor I have ever taken. You basically have three types of assignments you have to do varying amounts of. He doesn't give much clarification on what the assignments are or how to do them and when you ask he tells you stuff like "this assignment is longer than the other one". Learned more from the TA's.
Talks in circles and answers questions with questions. Doesn't teach the actual content in the class so you're always lost about what's going on. He focuses a lot on "developing personal philosophies" but doesn't give the necessary information to actually do so. His ideas about education sound good in theory but are impossible to put into practice.
Brother Wilson really makes you think about the philosophy of education and is very insightful that way, but the class is set up confusingly and the grading criteria is fuzzy. That is so that the student does all the work for themselves, not just to fill a certain requirement but it does get confusing.
HIs lectures are all over the place. It's so hard to keep up with what is going on. We are supposed to take a state exam at the end of the semester based off of this class, but I have learned absolutely nothing. If you ask him a question he'll just respond back with asking you a question. He comes to class so unprepared and it shows in lecture.
This guy is incredible! He takes information that we need to know and makes it so that we control our education. He truly made me think about the things that matter and I am so grateful for that. Great teacher if you have the desire to think for yourself, have an understanding of what you believe in, and be able to implement in our own classroom.
A lot of people love Bro. Wilson because his class is easy day to day. However, it was hard to motivate myself to go to class, because it was so boring and unstructured. There's a big project to teach one of his children something and it is to test our knowledge of the concepts. Yet, he doesn't explain all the concepts, so it makes it impossible.
Most genuine teacher you'll take. Class is basically us having discussions about the concepts. The reading isn't chronological, he literally says read until you find something interesting. The hardest part of the class was teaching his kids, and even then that wasn't hard at all. The class is very open with few restrictions. TAKE HIM!
His teaching strategy is beyond confusing due to its complete lack of structure. DO NOT TAKE HIM. (Unless you're great at reading people's mind.)
Brother Wilson can be very confusing at first, it can feel like you arent learning anything but you will without even realizing it. He cares about his students and genuinely wants to prepare you to be a thoughtful teacher. Go with the flow, dont stress, ask a lot of questions, and you will do well. He wants you to discover who YOU are as a teacher.
This is quite a special class. And by special I mean the most confusing class I have ever taken. Brother Wilson is a fun guy but he isn't clear about what he expects in his class. There is NO structure whatsoever. If you take Brother Wilson, ask A LOT of questions and visit him during his office hours. Work ahead on projects & do not procrastinate.
Brother Wilson's class is probably one of the most confusing classes ever!!!!! Literally people are asking "what are we doing?", "When is that due?" etc. all the time. The instruction was super confusing and most of the assessment doesn't have a due date. The lesson topic are super random as well. So confuse the whole time...
Brother Wilson was an awful teacher. I would not take his class again. His expectations are unclear and I was confused the entire time. Attendance doesn't matter if you do the contributions. If you want to be confused the whole time Bro. Wilson is the man but if you want to learn I suggest taking from a different teacher.
I don't know why he gets bad ratings. He is still my favorite professor in Education. He encourages you to think for yourself and not the mindless grading system. You're actually learning how to be a teacher and influence students.
Brother Wilson is a great guy! However, his class is crazy disorganized, don't use Canvas, and the grading criteria is a mystery. Don't bother with the textbooks-I paid way too much for books I never opened, except one.
This class is literally a joke. I learned absolutely nothing. He wants you to learn 100 concepts related to teaching, but doesn't even give clear definitions/examples in class! He also expects discussion in class, but doesn't answer questions and doesn't seem to care about what students say. If you want to actually learn something, go elsewhere.
I think bro wilson is a great guy! The course was just a little confusing. I learned quite a bit but I was always unsure of what I was supposed to be doing. Its an easy class! Just can be stressful when you dont have any guidelines to go off of.
Some people don't like his teaching style because he doesn't tell you exactly what to do but he is super understanding, funny, and has a way of helping you remember things. I felt more in charge of my learning. If you prefer someone with more structure, he is not for you.
I REALLY like bro wilson. I just absolutely hated this class. It was often called "the stupid ed class" in my house. He is masterful in almost manipulating you to learn in class, it's really amazing tbh. I just hated the complete lack of structure and extremely vague expectations. Easy A if you do everything, but the headache is annoying as frick.
Brother Wilson is a great guy and teacher. His class is not very structured in the sense that he doesn't tell you exactly how to do everything, but he's teaching by example. That really stressed me out at first, but I learned a lot and did well. He's always willing to talk with you outside of class. Do the work and it'll be fine. Easy A
Bro Wilson is kind/caring. His class stressed me out at first because its not very structured. He doesn't tell you how to do everything, but that's intentional. He wants you to discover your own way of doing the work to help you explore philosophical ideas. If you relax, go with the flow, and participate in the group discussions, you will get it.
His classes are confusing if you're used to structure, just expect not to know whats going on for a while so don't freak out. He likes to treat 461 like a practicum even though it isn't which can make it tough to work with. Expect not to feel like you're learning much but you will! He's perceptive and knows when you're slacking off/not listening!
Hes great but I wish class had more structure. As another review said, hes masterful in almost manipulating you to learn if you pay attention. Hes not going to force you to do anything. Take advantage of reading the 100 concepts list 1st thing and do your daily reading on those topics! You make or break your experience. You get out what you put in.
In this class be prepared to teach yourself. The lectures do cover content but half the time you won't know what he is talking about. He lacks any ability to explain an assignment thoroughly. He encourages you to ask questions, but don't ask him to repeat himself, he will tell you to go rewatch the recorded class or to go look it up yourself
Brother Wilson is an amazing teacher and helps you grow as an individual and a future educator through his courses. He is a wonderful person and if you put your heart into the class, you'll get so much out of it.
Brother Wilson is easily one of my favorite teachers. Having had him more than once, I can tell you that the people saying his class is confusing are the people who aren't actively participating/coming to class. No, attendance isn't mandatory, but if you show up you will learn a lot without feeling strained. Easy class, but you learn a TON. 0 exams
When it comes to his lectures he can be very confusing. In the class, there are no exams, but a lot of projects. It's important to show up to class so you can know what to do because he doesn't give you any sort of rubric. I had him for fall 2020 and he never graded my projects that I spent many hours on, which was frustrating but I still got an A
We had 3 assignments all semester and they were due the last day of the semester... Although they were completion grades I was sooooo stressed. I was confused on what most of the lectures were even for. Honestly you could never go to class and still complete these assignments. Just read his email after every class.
It's pretty clear to me reading these reviews that some of these people are stuck in the BYUI routine and are REALLY narrow-minded. Brother Wilson easily one of the best teachers on this campus, and it's because he's different. Come to class, participate, and relax. It takes some getting used to, but it is SO worth it. No due dates, pace yourself.
Most of us students were confused at the beginning of Brother Wilson's class. We were waiting to be spoonfed as objects but he inspired us to be agents. He is a very light grader. If you read, contribute, and have a desire to learn you're basically guaranteed to pass with an A. I remember more from this class than any other class taken here.
I absolutely love Brother Wilson and he is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. I highly recommend taking any class with him!
Easy class, but a stressful at times. Basically, you study whatever you want (the only textbook I used was Make it Stick) and write a little about it in a google doc before class. Your grade is largely based on the projects due at the end of the semester, which are easy but time consuming and daunting. Not much on canvas, but terms for slides are.
He's a good interactive teacher but I was very confused most of the time and he is NOT clear with due dates at all
He doesn't follow the usual routine of teachers at byui but in this case that's not good. There is NO structure of any kind, his TAs do all the grading and are not helpful either. He doesn't give you outlines of assignments and avoids your questions about an assignment. Says to just rely on your group. Good for audio learners, but no one else. 0/10
You will have a solid amount of daily assignments, the T.A.'s are basically second teachers and he hands a lot of grading/teaching off to them. His criteria is unclear and he has no organization on canvas. I spent most of the time very confused, and I was on zoom where he records with very poor quality making it really hard to pay attention.
I have loved Brother Wilson's class. Nothing is really due until the end of the semester and he helps with everything; so there are no worries on any of the assignments. He gives amazing and interactive lectures and really makes us think in a way I've never thought before. I also love that he lets us work with his kids!!
Your assignments are done over the course of the semester so I recommend staying on top of them. He is super funny and super nice. Always made me hungry talking about burritos. I enjoyed his class everytime I was there
Although this class wasn't structed well, it doesn't mean it's an awful class! Bro Wilson is passionate about his profession and is very helpful. My TA's were phenomenal and were always ready clarify the assignments and projects! As long as you stay on top of your assignments, you will easily pass this class, I promise!
There are 3 long essays given during finals week, determine your I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone because it is extremely overwhelming to have it all thrown on you during finals week. Write the 3 separate 7 page essays in the middle of doing your finals. If you don't do well on these assignments you fail the class.
Brother Wilson's class was one of the most chaotic, confusing classes I have taken. The entire class is on miro rather than canvas. There is a giant project that takes forever to do. I always felt that I was behind and never knew how well I was doing in the class. The class is 99% discussion that covers maybe one concept a day. Too unclear for me.
like others have mentioned, this class was chaotic. there were students asking about the big project every single day up to the last day of class. however, he explained that it's whatever you want to do and those who needed more structure struggled more with that direction. he is super helpful, understanding, and an easy grader. just try your best!
This man has made me want to pull out my hair every time I come to class. No structure, vague topics and no natural flow, and an obsession with "smelling" your comments and ideology. When asked if we could say a prayer, he said "I withhold certain things from you to see if you actually value them." And then we had a discussion about prayers...
This man does not know how to teach. He was sweet but his class was the same every time ... talking in circles. I get what he was trying to do, using daily examples to help us understand concepts but it didn't work. The TA's are awesome though and they single handedly carried me through this class. Would never take another class of his ever ever
Professor Wilson is so kind and fun, but also very disorganized. The class is so vague and abstract. Theres a few big assignments throughout the semester, without clear guidelines or due dates so I felt confused throughout the whole semester. I only really understood what I was supposed to do after I met with the TA. Lecture was fun though!
Life changing!!!! The structure is so different than other classes, and is based on learning and not assignments. We do a lot of class discussions and funny object lessons like whistling contests. This class had made me realize how boring other classes are. You need to be self motivated to do well.
Brother Wilson's class was really confusing for me. We were all over the place and I never really understood what the assignments were or how I was supposed to do them. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOKS! They aren't required even though they were marked as required. I basically spent $50 to not even open either of the books. Fun guy, confusing professor.
The class can be confusing at first because he don’t use canvas. He uses Miro board a lot, and the entire semester you’ll be learning different concepts which prepares you for the projects. If you understand the concepts well enough, it will be easier for you to complete the project.
Brother Wilson is an amazing professor. I recommend coming to class every day and taking notes on all the concepts mentioned. That information can be used later.
Brother Wilson is absolutely wonderful. My favorite teacher so far after several semesters.
Work for this class: A couple paragraphs for every day of class, one field study/infographic, one filmed lesson, and a big project as the final where you watch videos and identify concepts. Everything is due at the end of the semester. No clear guidelines. Great guy, and classes were fun, but dealing with the poor grading system was difficult.
Don't listen to any of the negative reviews on here. I took Ed psych and human development and I liked it so much I took his teaching as a profession class too. I'm not even an education major lol. He teaches in a way that is unique sometimes, but I grew to love his style of teaching
As someone who has ADHD, I was able to stay better engaged and learned so much from this class! I would gladly take every single one of his classes because of his student lead teaching style. All the discussions were led by questions from the students and were authentic and thought-provoking. He is organized but uses a different site than Canvas.
Professor Wilson teaches in a very student lead way and it's super fun and rewarding to bring up a topic and talk about it for 10 or 20 minutes because your question was thought provoking.
Brother Wilson is an amazing professor! He wants you to learn and he wants you to succeed! Pay attention and keep up, if you are trying there is no way you can fail his class. He is passionate about education and wants you to learn and understand to find your own path. He makes learning about education fun and tells it how it is.
I really liked Bro. Wilson's class. We learned a lot and the lectures were like scholars talking to each other and we were in a circle. Your final is your teaching philosophy and a statement. If you participate and do the readings and the notes, you will pass the class with flying colors. He knows what he's talking about and he's fun.
was great, but kind of confusing lectures
Brother Wilson is an excellent teacher for freshman students entering the interdisciplinary studies program. The environment is motivating, encourages continual positive progression, and is kind and forgiving.
This is a class taken for my major. And the way Brother Wilson would word things would make zero sense. Yes, it is a philosophy class, but everything was made confusing for no reason. He is also a very poor grader, it is the end of the semester and none of my major assignments have been graded yet.
He's a good guy, but the organization for this class is awful. He doesn't stick to due dates in Canvas, which means assignments are marked "missing" that we haven't even started yet. It's almost the end of the semester and the whole class currently has an F because of this. His lectures and lesson plans make absolutely no sense.
There is no organization or structure to this class. There are no clear instructions, due dates, or expectations. He doesn't grade anything, so everyone is failing this class right now. I have learned nothing about my IDS degree but lots about breathing, smelling, puzzles, and how to be confused and frustrated. Please do yourself a favor, run.
* the class I took wasn't listed on here He's a great guy. However, by the end of the semester there were so many things we never got to. The expectations he set in the first class weren't followed through. Very lenient grader. I can see why other people might not like his teaching style--it's kind of all over and some classes seemed a waste.
I took Wilson's PEACE101 course, and it was super interesting. His teaching style might not be for everyone, as it was usually unstructured and based on class participation. We did group quizzes and decided as a class how we wanted the grades to be weighted. Wilson is very much a user of the flipped classroom, but is respectful and fun.
He's super funny and creates good ground for you to build off of, but doesn't create a ceiling, so you can shoot as high as you can. He is always willing to answer any questions and work things out with you. He gets you excited about working with the Savior in assignments and helps you see your full potential.
this teacher is so chill. attendace seems mandatory but as long as you do your 2 assignments a week youll pass. dont need to come every day. we dont do much in class, he just rambles on. he is very funny and interesting tangents. i would take again but kinda a waste of time. but if you have to take this class take this professor.
