She is a very fun person, but don't get on her bad side. She connects with some students more than others and its noticeable in a small class. Tests are average in difficulty but the aural class gets very difficult.
she has no idea what she's doing.
She does what she can to make the class fun. However, favoritism is felt in the class and seeking help isn't always ideal depending on her moods.
garvey is a wonderful person, and definitely increased my knowledge of theory this semester versus last semester, but only because of harsh grading. her assistance depends on her mood and how busy she is, but you definitely have to read the books to know the material. she doesn't teach everything necessary in class.
I think she's very helpful and put music theory on a level you can understand. She's nice, sweet, and always willing to help. She sometimes treats us like children, but it's nice if you don't know anything about theory. She starts from the beginning.
so far so good. I haven't really had any trouble yet...I hope if there is favoritism that it doesnt' show up in our class, I just want to be the best I can be. :)

If you get on her bad side drop the class. When you have to sight sing you will get raped by her grading. She is condecending and only willing to help out if you fit her time schedule. I would not suggest this professor for theory.
Dr. Garvey ROCKS. She is really tough on grading but that's ok if you study and do the work. You will work hard. If there are favorites they are people who actually show up prepared for class, which makes sense. Easy to understand, really knows theory. Very organized. Very busy but seems to teach the most classes here? Always at school.
Garvey is a decent prof, but I thought the class moved kind of slow. Switched profs for level 2. Garvey does fine with level 1, wouldn't recommend her for anything higher though.
Great
Awesome prof, really helps you learn
Man, if only we would havehad more alone time... I loved her. She made a non-music person like myself a Bach god.
She was way to easy on grading. She didn't challange her students. She doesn't have the facility to demonstrate examples on the piano. She comes off as condecending at times. Fine for someone who has absolutely no expierence beyond just reading basic music.
Easy class-I didn't feel like I learned that much in second semester. Tests are graded really easy, no homework. Class is boring and really repetitive, but honestly, how exciting can music theory be???
She is really funny, and the class is pretty easy.
Great. Makes class fun.
I am not a singer in the least and yet Dr. Garvey's aural theory class was not TERRIBLY difficult. It requires a lot of individual practicing, but she guides you through the best ways to do it and she's always willing to help if you take the initiative to seek it out. She understands if you're not a singer and grades very fairly.
Great prof. Funny and relatable. Gives lots of helpful advice. Recommended.
Garvey is an interesting person. She is kind of mean about things sometimes. She is a good professor but sometimes gets fairly annoying. Be prepared to sing a lot, but never alone.
Dr. Garvey cares a lot about her students and what they recieve from the class. She is a hard grader and is very picky about how you do your homework. She is very fun to get along with and has a smile on her face all the time. I would recommend her to any student unless your not eager to learn or do homework that takes time!
Funny teacher, very good at teaching!! I learned a lot and didn't even realize that I was doing so. Assigns kind of a lot of readings and sometimes sassy when you ask questions. Funny and understanding though. I feel like I learned a lot just even by going to class. Beginning
Dr. Garvey is a wonderful professor. She was always clear and made sure students understood what was expected in class and assignments. She is also super helpful in office hours. You can tell she loves teaching--she's always got a smile on her face.
I love Dr. Garvey. She obviously has a passion for music and teaching. She makes class fun, even though the class is difficult! If you apply yourself, you will be fine. The homework is time consuming and she assigns a lot of singing, but as long as you do your best, you'll be fine. She understands if you're not a singer and grades fairly.
Here's the thing, I really like Dr. Garvey. She's enjoyable and makes you work, but you for sure get better because she pushes you. However, she isn't understanding when it comes to reasons for coming into a test even a second late, so don't miss one.
She can be tough at times, but her primary goal is to help you learn and she does a great job developing student's musicianship.
Dr. Garvey is fantastic - she's super spunky and good to be around, and always willing to help or to chat about life. Occasionally a tough grader, but if everyone appears to be struggling things tend to be completion grades. Highly recommended if you can deal with sarcasm and wit.
Dr. Garvey teaches at just the right pace. She grades homework mostly on if you did or not, but she still corrects it to show you what you did wrong, which is nice. Her quizzes and recitations can be challenging, but if you study you will do just fine. Dr. Garvey made a tough class very enjoyable.
Dr. Garvey made written theory easy to learn. She is very dedicated to her work and turns back corrected homework very soon after turning it in. She has no problems with putting grades on D2L. She likes to use her red ink, but it is just to make us better, and she doesn't grade harshly or anything.
Daily Quizzes and daily homework/readings/listenings. She expects everyone to know what they are talking about and many difficult aspects of music that only a music major would be able to know and recognize. Super tough grader. If you are expecting an easy class, take this with a different professor.
Garvey is really kind and caring. Throughout the semester you have to attend 4 concerts & write reflection papers on them. Every day at the beginning of class, you have a 3-5 question quiz based on the homework she assigns you on D2L. If this freaks you out a bit, it shouldn't, the quizzes & homework are super easy. Overall, a fun class & easy A!
I loved Dr. Garvey! She's hilarious, and made an 8am lecture fun. Her class enriched my love of music, and was a manageable amount of work for a general course. She's very clear about her expectations, and wants all of her students to do well in the course. Garvey is great
Took this class because you have to take a fine arts credit as a general class. She assumes everyone knows all about music and its various components. Lots and lots of homework so if you aren't taking many classes it shouldn't be too bad. If you have a heavy course load, good luck.
Not an easy A. I took this class for an art credit expecting it to be an easier 100 level course, but Garvey expects you to know all these terms about music. The exams were A TON of memorization and the quizzes given everyday are kind of tricky to get 100% on.
HARD HARD HARD, she expects you to memorize about 15 songs for each test, and then on the comprehensive final, you have to know 50 songs by a 10 second clip. Not an easy A and definitely assumes everyone has background knowledge. Definitely don't take this if you have a heavy course load. Clicker quizzes every class so attendance is MANDATORY
Teaches this class like everyone in it is a music major, so if you don't really love music, don't take this class because you get homework everyday that takes almost an hour sometimes. Not worth it just for the gen ed credit! Definitely not an easy A.
Tests are difficult. She expects you to identify songs based on short clips and is not willing to replay clips. She is super paranoid all the time about technology in the classroom but also expects you to have it at all times for quizzes and tests. Her personality is also crap. Shes rude, presumptuous, and just plain unkind. Poor educator qualities
Everyday you will have a quiz about music that you basically need to memorize everything about. There are three exams in the class. Her lectures are also rather boring. If you don't like old classical music, you will probably hate this class. We have only listened to a few modern songs the rest are boring classical pieces.
Way too difficult of a class for a 100 level course. Not a fan of this professor. Wouldnt recommend
Dr. Garvey may be a harder professor, but she is very fair. There are daily quizzes to make sure you are doing the readings and tests, one of which was an essay. This is definitely not and easy A class, but if you do the readings and come to class, you will do well.
I had a tough time learning from her because I did not mesh with her personality. There is reading due every class which she quizzes on, but they're easy and she drops your 4 lowest scores. After a while she gives the quizzes at the end of class so you really don't have to do homework. Class would be fine if it was 50 minutes but 75 is unbearable.
Professor Garvey is very energetic and tries to make the lectures interesting. There are quizzes at the end of each class, but if you pay attention you'll do fine. The exams are a little tough. A lot of work for a GE, but easier than others. There's always homework after each class, but doesn't take much time.
Garvey is awesome! She's super nice and understanding! I'd recommend this class to anyone who has background knowledge in music or likes music. There's a short multiple choice quiz at the end of every class, but all the information in covered in class. Lots of homework, but doesn't take long. Difficult part is the listening bc you have to memorize.
Garvey is great! She is so passionate about the material and her expectations are clearly outlined. A great class for anyone who likes music or has prior background knowledge. Exams can be a little tricky and there are online quizzes at the end of each class but are open notes and she puts a lot of emphasis on the important things. A great K4!
Music Appreciation with Garvey is a fine class and an easy way to get your fine arts credit done. It covers classical music as well as more recent music. There is a short assignment before every lecture & an open note quiz at the end of every class. Semester had 3 multiple choice tests that were pretty, one essay test, and 4 concert reflections.
She was a good professor! I would take her!
Lectures are very boring and hard to pay attention throughout, yet she expects everyone in the class to raise their hand and say something. Very condescending and acts like she is above the class. 3 tests, last one is all listening, with daily quizzes about the lecture. Class wouldn't be as bad if she was easy to approach and acted like she cared.
She has a type of personality that a lot of people dont like. I dont recommend sitting in the front few rows. Therere assignments due every class period, quiz every time too. Raise your hand and answer her questions or she will deflate you. She expects you to know everything about music. Last exam is 50% compreh., 50% current material.
each exam has a listening portion (8-13 songs-ish) and multiple choice... 4 exams, roughly 30-40 questions each, usually nightly HW (class was tues/thurs) so not a huge load! there are 2 documentaries she wants you to watch - not worth it. show up, take notes, take all the quizzes- lowest 4 get dropped. finalcomprehensive listening exam. easy.
This class was an easy A. You dont have to show up for the most part, just read the study guides and memorize everything for the exams. I passed just fine.
Honestly she's nice but her personality can be really ugh. I had a bad experience with her since she called me out to everyone based off her assumptions and it really turned me off. Lectures definitely not the worst at all and u do learn a lot. The 3rd term's reading homework was insane and many of the info was literally unnecessary for the exam.
I had Dr. Garvey for History of Rock & Pop Music. It was an interesting class to take, especially during COVID. The first part of the semester was very easy for me, but I have a background in music, which isn't necessary, but I would highly recommend having a background in music. It provides an interesting perspective of the evolution of music.
I had Garvey for History of Rock and Pop this semester and it honestly says something about her that she can make learning about music I love SO BORING. She is not accessible at all by email. Kinda psycho about attendance (even during a pandemic) and made quizzes that you have to be in class for, 25% of the grade. We didn't mesh. Don't recommend.
Instead of teaching music from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, she went from 50s to a full month teaching rap music that discussed social injustice. This topic is obviously very appropriate to teach, but she spent so much time on it and talked about her own political beliefs the whole time instead of teaching what the course is designed to teach.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS. I went into the class thinking it would be intresting but I was way wrong. she makes attendance mandatory even though there's a pandemic going on. Her quizzes make little to no sense and she takes weeks to grade things then gives you little to no time to fix it. She will NEVER respond to email's and is super rude to her students.
This class would have been a lot more enjoyable with a more respectful professor who is willing to work with students. Dr. Garvey did not accept any reasons for late quizzes or assignments and was very rude when asked for extensions. I would not recommend taking any of her classes if you can avoid them.
Avoid this class at all costs. Garvey was rude and discriminatory. I emailed her about help and she basically told me if I didn't understand what was expected then I'm at a loss. She expects a lot out of students and was extremely inflexible. The only reason we passed is bc the students helped each other outside of class.
Garvey is perhaps the worst teacher that I have had the displeasure of having throughout my colligate career. I took History of Rock and pop with her, expecting to encounter a class that simply went over a history of rock and pop, and instead encountered a music knowledge intensive class, with more homework than my actually educational courses.
She gives a quiz at the end of every class which gets a little annoying but if you pay attention during class they are easy points. Overall, Garvey is a good professor. She is super passionate about music and is excited about each class. The lectures get a little long, but if you are a fan of music this is a great class. I would take it again.
She is not understanding at all of circumstances that come up for students. I had my sisters wedding and she refused to let me take the midterm early. This is by far the worst teacher and mentor I have ever experienced. Her class is stupid (no matter what the class is). She is very rude and careless. If I could give a rating below zero, I would.
Professor Garvey is very passionate about music but she likes to make the class unnecessarily hard considering most people are just taking it for an LE. There is a quiz you have to take before every class and it is absolutely necessary that you do the pre-quiz work because all of the questions come directly from the text. Exams are open note.
Dr. Garvey had a fun personality and made the class interesting. The exams are open notes and very easy, if you do the listening before. You do have to do some reading and then a quiz before every class, which gets tedious after a while. She only allows students to take notes by hand, which can be difficult since she speeds through lecture content.
Overall, this class was enjoyable. If you want to do well, you have to come to class and take good HANDWRITTEN notes, phones/laptops/iPad are forbidden. All tests are open note. Make sure to actually try on the "At Home" assignments, as they make up 40% of your grade. I would take this class again.
Dr. Garvey was a very passionate and kind teacher. You could tell she loved what she was teaching and loved the music. I loved finding new music that I enjoyed. However, she doesn't post the slides on canvas, so if you miss class you're doomed. There is a lot of reading, but easy to find answers for quizzes. If you listen to the music, you'll pass.
I would say if you don't have background knowledge of music, do not take this class. It was just too much work for a K4. Hours of homework before each class and quizzes before and after each class. A lot of the test questions require you to be able to recognize songs by memory, which is tricky. Garvey is spunky and fun, but not worth the effort.
Absolutely the worst professor I have had my freshman year. Totally ruined music for me and would NOT recommend this class to anyone. The class is way to tedious for a REQUIRED LE and if possible take any other class.
One of my worst professors of my freshman year. Would not recommend this professor to anyone! Her class is way to tedious with her giving out hours of hw for a REQUIRED LE that no one wants to take. She does not focus on any rock in the class and instead yaps about the blues and 50s music. Lamest class ever.
lots of listening and extra work to do okay in the class
Great lectures. You have to be into the music to actually enjoy the class. Its all about mindset. Dont take if you listen to one genre of music.
Class was unnecessarily hard for a common LE credit. Really focused on the early 50s and Blues music other than Rock and Pop. Assigns in class quizzes every class period and hours of listening and questions. Every exam was open note except for the final. Would advise not to take.
Complete waste of time and money, Professor Garvey was one of the most disrespectful professors I've ever had, she wasn't flexible at all and always late to grading items like quizzes and exams. She made this course extremely difficult and was not able to work with students to help them learn. I think this class should be removed along with Garvey.
Gave a total of 4 hours of homework before the second day of class even started. Started giving out quizzes on things we didn't learn at all.
This class was way too hard and time consuming for a general LE credit. She gave out 4 hours of homework before the second day of class had even started. She didn't teach and just expected you to know everything about music. The tight due dates forced me to do hours of work for this class instead on ones that were actually important.
Dr. Garvey is always fair. If you put in any effort, you will pass.
There is a lot of reading for homework, but if you just Google the review questions before taking the quiz, you will be fine. She is super funny. TAKE NOTES in lecture.
Dr. Garvey is an entertaining lecturer but for a music LE course, she probably could have done better with explaining musical concepts to those who don't have a background. The homework was too much, but you can get by by doing less than half. Just be smart about it... Also, this class is the HISTORY of rock. No pop. Emphasis on the history.
This was overall a very enjoyable class. There is a good amount of prep work before each class, but if you just do some you'll be okay. I really liked the lecture and learned so much more about music. The class is likely more fun if you like music to start with and have a basic knowledge of the artists and eras.
The history of rock and pop was a very interesting class; we listened to music the whole time. I wouldn't say it is a hard class, but you will struggle if you don't go to class and take notes. None of the PowerPoint are posted, exams are open notes. There is a very short quiz after each class, she drops the 4 lowest at the end of the semester.
The professor doesn't post slides, so go to class or get notes from a friend. Class material is pretty easy, just pay attention. Exams are open note; my biggest suggestion is to do the study questions, which help with exams! She's approachable and makes the course interesting. I would recommend.
Attendance is necessary due to an in-class quiz at the end of each lecture. She gives out lots of homework (at least 1.5 hours worth every other day). The exams have lots of information on them, and a lot of listening to music is required.
My favorite professor at UWEC!
Never in my 20 years of life have I seen a teacher give more busy homework for a class. I mean we're talking a pre class quiz and post class quiz every class period it's actually unbelievable.
Gives a lot of readings as homework (not graded), but the lectures are so good that I passed easily without doing the homework at all. Very enthusiastic, cares about teaching and helping students. Just pay attention and stay involved during lectures
