Unapproachable, very unfair marker...Boring lectures
Does not really seem to know her material with all the guest speakers.
very friendly, lectures were somewhat vague, but the marking was EXTREMELY easy
Awesome prof, feminist but not man-hating, interesting discussions.
She is condescending, rude and has absolutely no repor with her students. It is her way or the highway. Anytime a question was raised (even if it was a really good point) she would either dismiss it or make you feel like you were absolutely stupid.
This prof expects you to do the reading, and separates people who are talking while she is. The TA's do more explaining than she does in class, and she expects you to know all the material, even though she's suppose to be teaching it.
Makes lectures interesting. She expects you to do the reading, but isn't that normal for classes?
She really knows what she is talking about, lectures are interesting, so are assignments, but a cactus covered with bees is more approachable than she is.
Condesending, and one sided. I hated this class..
christabelle really knows her stuff. she is a very passionate and interesting lecturer, although her rapport with students could be improved upon.
She's a really smart lady, funny in an odd way too. She has a tendancy to allow really stupid class discussions go on way too long and it can frustrating for anyone with more than 2 braincells. She remarked an assignment for me that I thought was unfair without complaint and improved my mark.
loved the class! presented information in straightforward and interesting manner. very approachable and understanding. marks are fair and if you understand the lectures and readings, tests are easy. really enjoyed her and her class. recommended to everyone!!!
Very interesting and enlightening class!!! She knew her information and made it interesting for the students to learn. Sort of a lot of work thogugh (3 essays and a final exma). I CAN understand though what people mean about her cockiness, otherwise, she's a good prof.
good prof
AMAZING.
Amazing professor and I learned a lot.
Loved the class. It was one of the courses in which I learned the most. But you need to put some hard work into it. Some students take this course as a mickey-mouse course, chit-chat throught class, don't do their lectures and hold up class with ridiculous questions. She does a good job of keeping them in line.
she knows her stuff. HOWEVER, saying to your class "i wouldn't hire anyone in this classroom to do research for me, all your papers have citation mistakes and it is clear that English is not the first language of some students in this class" only makes her look pompous and highly intimidating. Despite that, she's extremely knowledgeable.
Looks like Katie Holmes! :) Very interesting, I like her organized style. To the point, will school your ass. Misunderstood maybe? I enjoyed her a lot. fav prof.
She really knows her stuff, and yeah she is funny in her own little way. She tries to lay out the material as best she can even when it covers so much. she is approachable... so I dont know what these other people are talking about.
One of my favorite profs for sure. Very interesting material and she conveys it very well. NOT a bird course, reading was very heavy and participation is expected. Getting a good mark takes lots of effort but it's well worth it.
Her first time teaching HSS2121. Very nice, acts like she is helpful in person. Strict with disregard for student's farewell. Avoid her teaching this class if you can.
didnt participate at all in class discussions, didnt do any of the readings and still did well on midterm + paper! easy class if you pay attention and study the material which is easy to do since it was interesting. shes smart and is a feminist but doesnt hate men. surprisingly ended up being a good class!!
Sethna is AMAZING. She's talking about things that challenge us as a society. She's smart and she expects her students to come to class prepared. She has high standards and she doesn't mess around. I took another class of hers just because she taught it.
the course is really interesting. I learn a lot regarding the history of racism. Her miderm is a easy but her quiz are extremely hard. They are not related to the reading sometimes. She ran the course like a dictator. She banned the use of laptops in the classroom. I will not take another course with her ever again.
Interesting course. Take good notes! She bans laptops, kinda helpful in the long run attention-wise. Read all the class readings in the coursepack! Midterm was hard, quizzes are easy as long as you read! Study hard and understand it and it'll be fine.
Just amazing. This class and professor changed my life, no joke. Not for the lazy or weak of heart. Totally worth it in the end
An insightful teacher who encourages you to maintain a critical eye of politics and media. Do the readings, participate in class, talk to her in office hours. She will make you a better writer and a better thinker. Previous posts deeming her intimidating and strict are too simplistic- she has high expectations, but it doesn't make them impossible.
AMAZING! Not only is Prof Sethna an amazing speaker but she clarifys everything you need to know so you're fully prepd for the exams. don't get thrown off by the laptop ban (i freaked out at first too) but it really does make you do better in the class. She is insightful and makes you thinks about things, she made me love history!
She is a great prof, her lectures are actually so interesting and it's not really that hard of a class. Great speaker
Sethna is very fair and clear with. Exams reflect class material very well. If you pay attention to the exam questions and answer merely what it is asking, not go deeper you will do well. Do the readings and keep in mind key terms and general ideas. Fill in the blanks on tests are difficult. She is super nice and her lectures are engaging. Great!
The class was interesting, and the prof is good at explaining the material. It seems that the laptop ban makes the classes move at a slower pace, but really it's worth it, you're forced to pay attention and at least for me, it showed in the grade I received.
Although she is an excellent lecturer and makes the class interesting, her midterms are impossible to do well in. She bases the question on miniscule details in the textbook, so coming to her class and taking notes is completely useless. Whats the point of great teaching skills when none of what you teach is going to be tested on? AVOID.
AMAZING. She is misunderstood by those who give poor ratings. She cares quite a bit about students no matter how big the class is. She is intimidating, but if you approach her and need help she is great. Her classes are not easy however I have learned the most from her classes. She challenges her students in a way most profs don't. Fave prof by far
Beware of this class. Yes, it is interesting, but a TON of work. You will spend most of your weekend trying to get through the dense coursepack readings. There are a LOT of readings. You cannot skim either, she expects you to remember every minor detail for about 15 readings. There was too much info packed into the course to be effective.
She was very clear with her notes and conveyed the topics very well using videos and pictures a lot. You MUST read the textbook and take notes on it for midterms/exams. She asks very specific questions from the book. If you do not attend class you will not pass because exams are based on her notes and she doesn't post them. Helps if you ask her.
Walked into this class thinking I was going to hate it. Surprisingly it was a very interesting class thanks to her! She doesn't allow laptops. I wouldn't say it was a lot of work but the tests were very specific and you basically have to memorize the readings along with her lectures, which won't be too bad if you enjoy it anyway.
The material for this class was really interesting and Prof Sethna did an excellent job of addressing delicate subjects in a politically correct and well-rounded way. However, I thought this would be an easy course because it has no papers, but the readings were hugely important and her exams are very tricky.
Sethna did a good job of teaching this course for the first time. Be warned, there is a lot of reading to do and you are expected to participate in the seminar as well as work on your public speaking skills. Papers were confusing, her instructions not always clear. But if you ask for help she'll give it to you :)
Professor Sethna did an amazing job teaching this class and conveyed the subject matter in a great way. She doesn't allow laptops, and does not post notes online, so its very important that you attend class every week. There is a lot of reading and expects you to thoroughly understand each article assigned.
Amazing prof. You learn SO much SO quickly- but it's totally worth it. She expects a lot from her students, so don't take this class if you're just trying to fill your time table. Take this class and learn from her! She's excellent.
Dr Sethna is truly one of a kind. She is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and engaging. The textbook was also very interesting. However she is quite stubborn and often times focused on the history of medicine from a purely feministic point of view because of a personal vendetta. Exams were tough, but fair. If you're eager to learn take it with her
Amazing lecturer, one of the few I've had where my mind never wandered throughout the lecture. She is not a fan of electronics in the class and will give you one warning for using your cell phone before you get to sing a Bieber song in front of everyone. If a laptop is better for taking notes on though you can talk to her and she'll let you though.
A nice change to the typical university course. Sethna drives the class to focus on comprehension instead of memorization. She uses different media to reinforce the message. I've never taken a history class but i am really enjoying it. The three hour class goes by faster than my hour twenty classes!
She's a good lecturer that makes the course interesting. She plays plenty of movies during class and regularly dismisses students early. Where she really fails are the tests. Memorize, memorize and do more memorization and you'll be fine. Despite what she claims, there is absolutely no critical thinking needed in this course.
Her mid terms have questions I don't remember learning in class or in the lecture. Was told it would be an easy A, I think I have a C in the class.
HSS2121 Winter session 2015 was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. This is the worst professor I have ever had. Spends her lectures emphasizing about material and showing videos that are not tested on. Derives all her questions from textbook, but does not touch on it in class. Seriously needs to adjust to the 21st century. Exams are all short answer.
Sethna is probably the most interesting lecturer I have ever had at uOttawa. However, she emphasizes on critical thinking throughout the course but there's absolutely NO critical thinking in her exams. Learn names (all of them from the book), dates and examples BY HEART (this isn't critical thinking at all its memorizing).
She's a great lecturer, but they way she speaks can be demeaning at times. She tells us that we should be reading more books, although we already have a whole textbook and a course-pack that we need to read through. Her final also had multiple mistakes in it, but make sure you memorize names, and don't make any spelling mistakes.
The course and readings (there are a lot) are very interesting! I'm a social science student with an interest in health so I took this course for fun and got a lot out of it. Be warned: her tests are difficult - be prepared to memorize meticulous details from the text course pack. There is a no laptop policy. Great speaker but a bit demeaning.
I am in no sense being bias. I got an A- in this class and let me tell you, its an extremely interesting course and she is an amazing lecturer, but you literally have you take notes from the each chapter and make sure you try and pick out whatever names you think are important and make sure its spelled clearly on the exam. Goodluck!
Do not expect a good grade. HSS2121 is made up of mostly HSS students with science backgrounds, her whole course seemed to intend on proving that Social Sciences are better. She emphasizes the importance of critical thinking over grades but then tests on memorization solely for the midterms. The final was fair but did not make up for the midterms.
Get ready to write. Sethna bans all electronic devices in her classroom. She is arrogant and likes to make fun of dumb answers, however I found her to be very knowledgeable and the subject matter of the course is interesting. Her exams are based on what she emphasizes in class AND the readings. Memorize memorize memorize!!
To be fair, I barely went to this class all semester & still did alright - but the classes I did go to were informative, broke my hand from writing so much, and had me actively trying not to roll my eyes at all the very arrogant remarks she made. One of those profs that teaches their opinion - strongly. No laptops/phones was unfortunate. Easy tests
Professor Sethna is an extremely intelligent and articulate person, and she expects the same from her students. She is tough, but in a great way that allows you to develop critical skills you'll need to have throughout your undergrad. She is extremely helpful if you ask for it and the content of her courses is super interesting. Highly recommend!
No final exam which was great. Seminar class worth 20% participation. HEAVY reading- if you don't keep up you won't do well. Very unclear about expectations for midterm. No laptops. Would not recommend although she grades fairly
Be ready for your GPA to drop. Hardest test ever, never missed a class, did all the reading and I can't even get a B....
This prof was good but super tough. You won't pass if you don't do the readings and attend the lectures. Her exams were difficult because she has high expectations from everybody. She's smart and passionate about the class material which made for interesting lectures, I learned a lot. Even if I just passed this class, I recommend it to all.
Will interrupt a student if she disagrees with them. You dont have to do the readings if you attend class because she will go over them extensively. Exams are okay but she will dock marks if you dont give her the exact answer she is looking for. Expects you to have everything memorized.
she's just... a no. I like the course but she was so unlikeable that she made it hard for you to appreciate the course. if you're expecting an easy grade, skip this class because she wants specific answers on the exams that we barely went over in class and the smallest details in the readings.
Dr. Sethna is knowledgeable in her field, but her rude comments in class make it not worth it. Makes sarcastic comments and comes off a bit elitist. Very lecture heavy, no laptops allowed. The notes are not posted online so make sure to attend class. Overall the class material is interesting, but could be taught better.
The class content is interesting but she can be pretty rude to students, which makes it difficult to want to speak up (snarky comments, sarcasm, cutting people off, etc.) She has passion for her work but is hard to like and enjoy.
IF YOU SEE THIS MSG DONT EVEN BOTHER TAKING THE CLASS LOL YOULL THANK ME LATER
Honestly don't even know why she has a 3 out of 5 .. Worst professor i've ever had , class attendance is absolutely mandatory.. oh and I should mention that she doesn't allow laptops or phones in her class and will call you out like a elementary school teacher if she sees you on your phone. TERRIBLE class .AVOID AVOID AVOID
Prof. Sethna is very clear about her expectations for this class- if you don't show up or do any of the readings, you will not do well. People act like these are unreasonable expectations but they really aren't. She's an engaging lecturer and the content was interesting. She is a historian, so make sure to know your names and dates for her exams.
So much information is covered on the tests that its difficult to study for them. there are so many readings. I went into her office hours to see how I could do better and she's very sharp, but not unfriendly.
Was a business (HR) major but easily my fave course of my degree. Her approach to discussions on the diversities of women used an in-depth analysis of historic events. Very interesting and thought-provoking. No electronics handwritten notes you will focus. Must do readings to participate in discussion. Exams force you to be analytical.
She is a super difficult marker when it comes to midterms and finals. I had her for an online class and the feed back she provided for midterms and assignments wasnt even helpful, just plain rude. I would avoid ever taking any class with her. And if its mandatory, take it with another prof. You can go to class and study but still fail exams.
Prof. Sethna is AMAZING!! This was probably the most interesting course I've ever taken and she made it super enjoyable! She always goes over the readings in class and has a few assignments which are challenging, but super interesting. Highly highly recommend!
the worst professor I've ever had in my four years at uottawa. so rude and condensing, when asking for help on the midterms she questioned how I was even in fourth year and gave no guidance at all on how to get a better mark.
She doesn't record classes or post lecture slides, you only get notes summarized by students that aren't always posted. If you don't go to class you won't know a lot of what's going to be on the tests because she talks A LOT during lectures. Her feedback on assignments is pretty useless and doesn't actually help you improve on your written work.
Professor Sethna is a very tough grader and expects a lot from her students. The class material is not recorded and there are no visual power points therefore it is hard to grasp all the information. The readings are very long and intricate. Good luck.
Terrible
There are three exams. A huge amount of reading, a refusal to post notes to bright space, a student who has to attend classes for whatever reason because she won't update anything. Attendance is required, otherwise you will not pass the exam, and even if you do, you will not pass.
!!DO NO TAKE THIS CLASS/PROF!! While attendance is not mandatory, if you do not go to the class you will fail. But if you do go to the class you might still fail because she is an extremely hard marker and the material is all memorization. Also she is just plain mean to students who she does not like, while mean to guest speakers behind their backs
She is not considerate of students at all. She is rude and although knowledgeable she is not good with students. Her lectures include no PowerPoints and are simply her talking for 3 hours. Class is mandatory and if you miss even one you will be lost for notes. Her lectures are followed by an immense amount of reading. Do not recommend.
Class is really hard, no matter if you do the readings, watch the videos, and go to every class. Worst prof I have had in the 2.5 years I have been here. Midterms are hard and she has no grading scheme. I feel that she marks the midterms on how she would answer the midterm questions. Over all, terrible professor. Would avoid if possible.
2 continue my rating, are the readings dense? yes. do you have to go back over them a few times? yes. BUT, the great thing is abt prof sethna is that her lectures ARE the readings, and she delivers them to you in way that is easier to grasp. she will break down concepts, clarify ambiguities, etc. literally just be honest w urself abt ur learning
There's a comment about how if you show up and do the work the class will be easy. That is false. I believe she is biased in her grading. Those she likes will receive higher marks. Her grading is unclear, she expects you to answer the questions how she would. She is extremely rude and bitter. Disappointing because I was interested in learning.
A comment says she expects you to answer the questions as she does. This isn't exactly false, but she provides you with instructions on how you are supposed to answer questions, such as "Who, What, When, Where, Why," to get full marks. If you show up and are active in class, she will like you (not hard). If you sit in silence, what do you expect??
she offered no powerpoint or notes. that should say enough. I dropped immediately cuz why are we doing that in 2025..
I read these comments before taking the class, but thought to myself "how hard can it be?" I am telling you right now, run, and run far away.
I actually cannot put into words how frustrating this class is. Genuinely the worst experience I have ever had at uni. This is awful. If you have any self respect avoid this class and prof at all times.
Do not take classes with this professor. She is extremely arrogant and has repeatedly insulted or humiliated students and her TAs. She attempts to enforce rules that are both out of her jurisdiction and simply unnecessary. The content is interesting and has the potential to be a great class if it wasn't for this prof's unreasonable nature.
One of the worst professors here, extremely arrogant when asking for help. Lectures have no powerpoints just her going over readings. The course on its own doesn't seem too bad but the way she lays it out and teaches just sets you up for failure. Across this course taught by other professors the average was significantly higher for the same course
If you don't study, you won't pass. If you do study, you also won't pass. She wants you to fail.
I cannot express enough how terrible this class has been with professor Sethna. The content is not very difficult, however, she structures the class so as to make it as difficult as possible for her students. Her exams are structured for you to do poorly. If you need a good GPA, professor Sethna will absolutely obliterate yours, stay away.
For an elective which I took cause I thought it would boost my GPA , is now the lowest grade on my transcript. I don't understand why she structures the class to make it as difficult as possible for students to succeed when the class itself is very simple. She marks way too hard for a course that literally anyone could teach.
She organizes the class to optimize student failure even if attending all classes she deducts marks for not answering exactly the way she would. Her office hours are always booked and does not answer student emails. Classes are lecture heavy and she speed runs through everything so it's impossible to take notes in a class with no posted materials
