makes the class worth taking..great at keeping your attention, very laid back, surfer and the youngest history teacher I have ever seen. Gives extra credit..very helpful no midterm(summer class)
Mr. Beam rocks! He is so passionate about his subject that he delivers it in a way that keeps even those who hate history interested. He is funny and an enjoyable instructor, I higly recommend taking his courses
Mr. Beam is one of the greatest teachers at Moorpark. History is one of my worst subjects but he made it fun and enjoyable. He has a way of keeping you interested in the subject. Highly recommended!
Probably the greatest history teacher at moorpark. Makes History fun and makes you understand. You take a quiz everynight but dont stress. I never read the chapters and i got an A on everyone. The Midterm will scare you but dont worrie adn the final is way chill. Take this guy for history.
MR. BEEM IS ABSOLULTLY THE BEST TEACHER THAT I HAVE EVER HAD. HE HAS A COMMAND OF HIS SUBJECT THAT IS UNSUPASSED. YOU SHOULD DEFINATLY TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR
This teacher is honestly the BEST teacher I have ever had since Ive been at Moorpark. If you need to take this class, that this professor...he is amazing...he made the class fun and I cant talk more highly of him =)
He's cool. He talks like a sufer and walks like Jack Black. weird...but yea he knows what hes talking about, but can tend to go off on a tangent about his life that has do with it..i dont know...he thinkst here is no such thing as time...
Took his history class a few semesters ago and never was I so intrigued by the subject. He really makes US History accessible to those who don't have much, or any, interest at all. I went from C-average history grades in HS to getting an A from Mr. Beam. He really sparked something.
Mr. Beam made this class so much better than it could have been, with converse takes on historical events. He is very passionate and the class is definetely passable, if you read the material as a habit. Only downside...he talks poorly of FDR, and republicans will love Beam to death. Take it, you'll find interest in it even if you don't want to.
I could not STAND this man when the semester started...he is so full of himself, thinks he is the brightest lucky charm in the bowl, and does not let ANYONE talk in the class without his approval! BUT he is a fair teacher, all you have to do is listen to his lecture and pass his every day quizes. His mid-term and final are EASY!! (easy grader!!)
This guys so full of himself...he is not a very good teach and he is really annoying...but its an easy class to pass....so i guess I recommend it.
If you can handle sitting thru 3 hours of lecture and getting yelled at as if you are 4. Then go ahead and take this class. The class itself is easy. All lecture, you don't even have to read the book. Quiz everynight, so don't miss a class for any reason..drops your grade.
This is NO average boring history class. He will get you involved & interested in the subject whether you want it or not. I hated history befor & now i don't. Great porfessor. don't let the debate & the quizes scare you away. He's willing to help you if you have problems. just ask. Do the reading, attend the class & participate & u'll do fine.
Took class for IGETC area-4 credits. 2 cheap books, hw is read 1 chapter of each every week(not bad). Then you have a quiz and a debate on the reading. Dont miss any classes(each debate is 100pts). The rest is lectures, but he makes it interesting. Midterm and Final are inclass essays(1hr/strict format/no suprises)practice for essays. I got an A...

good teacher, he really knows his stuff. made me actually interested in history rather than fall asleep. he's kinda intimidating at first but once things gets rolling it's good. no hw, just reading, quizes ALMOST every class, u do debates which are not bad at all, don't let the first couple classes freak u out, it gets 10x's better later on. :)
Mr. Beam’s course was one of the best that I have taken. His lectures kept me awake and amused. He is fair when it comes to grading. The only people who have problems are those who fail to complete the assigned readings and/or fail to attend the lectures.
Awesome. You must take this class with an open mind. He plays "devil's advocate" a lot, gives both sides, and I found it really interesting and entertaining. I attended every class, never read the book once, got an A. He gave me a new perspective on the world. He rewards you for being insightful, not for memorizing. He is also very generous.
one of the best teachers I have ever had. His eyes are wide open and teaches you to take a closer look to our country and the way it carries out it's ideas...like I said, one of the best teachers I have ever had
Excellent teacher. If you are taking the class first time like me. Definately recomended. He definately knows what he is talking about. Gives you the prospective on both sides. Great guy will answer any question. Wants people to know about the country's History. 2 major essays and quiz everyday based on the readings.

If you want to get real facts from a rightwing warhawk, take his class. He presents the facts really well. He makes it come totally alive, plus he really makes you take a look at what government really is. There is, however a distinct rightwing slant that he puts on things
best history teacher..quizes every class but if you start to do poorly on them then he will make them a short essay giving you full points on your opinion. if everyone shows up to class week before final you get a take home final whoot whoot never felt like sleeping keeps your interest awesome teacher wants everyone to pass easy A if at least B
Possibly the best teacher I've ever had. This man shouldn't even be teaching community college, he's to smart. He's not a right wing war hawk like idiot below me said, he gives both sides to every story. Didn't read the book once and got an A. Lectures are awesome, always interesting. Really wants his students to learn.
If you know history you'll understand his sarcasm and the class will be easy. If you don't, attend class. Very very hard to fail this class. I would take his class again!
AMAZING TEACHER! I already had a passion for history and school in general but he is by far the best history teacher around. plays "devils advocate" doesn't want you too parrot the book or his beliefs, lenient with tests and quizzes if your a good student and at least show up/participate. Ive taken HIST M25 & HIST M07B Loved each one!!
Mr. Beam is a really cool guy. Laid back, but demands respect. If you do the reading, and the essays and such, you'll do fine. He talks like a surfer dude, but he's brilliant.
Great teacher. Mr. Beam was a bit intimidating at first but this turned out to be one of my favorite classes (and teachers). Very laid back, sits on his desk, extremely forgiving with tests, grades on a curve and gives several extra credit chances. Should be an easy A if you put in the effort (2 chaps of reading weekly). Smart guy, knows his stuff.
Love Him! Take him!!! u will learn so much!!!!
Totally intimidating on the first day, but stick it out because he has very interesting things to say. He really got me thinking in different terms. I would take him again if I could. Show up to every class, read the textbooks, write two papers, take some quizzes and you are golden!
What can I say. Mr. Beam is brilliant! His class is so interesting that you will have no trouble sitting through lecture. This has been my most favorite class I have ever taken. History can be pretty boring if taken with the wrong professor. He will get you to see all sides of any situation. If you need a History class take it with Mr. Beam (PEACE)
You owe it to yourself to take a history class with Mr. Beam. He is completely gifted. He will really get you thinking about both sides to every question. The quizes and tests are take home. If you attend every lecture and read the book you should have no trouble getting an A in his class. He may talk like a surfer dude, but he knows his history!
Awesome guy and teacher! Take this class! Makes lectures interesting even for non history majors. Make sure you understand the essay format for the take home tests because it's crucial to your grade!!! Fun class!
Super easy class. Attendance is important because he gives take home "quizzes" every class, the midterm and final are both really easy. He makes lectures interesting and has great insight on a lot of things. I'd take him again for sure.
This class was a joke. he talks to much. class could be so much shorter. he is the best ive had at keeping it fiar for every point of view. if you like writing essays take him. that is all this class is every week. if you like read and take multipule choice essays, then dont take. it is any easy A though. No book.
Mr Beam Is Awesome. No real "tests" take home quizzes (which are about a paragraph), mid term, and final. I learned more in his class than any others, and he's hilarious! Easy class for sure I got a B and hardly tried.
If you like US history, take this class- makes you think and write opinions on your papers, not just bs multiple choice test (because as he says, life isn't about multiple choice tests!) Gets off track alot, but pretty entertaining guy,...Easy A if you do the work - don't get scared the 1st day either haha
Beam is such a cool guy! He has a lot of passion for US History and makes class really interesting. I am by no means a history buff, but he made me want to attend class! Doesn't take attendance but there's a small quiz at the end of every class, and your grade is based off of those quizzes, a midterm, and a final. I got an A w/o reading the book :)
Beam is amazing! I dislike history, but he made it interesting&fun. Not to mention hes cute& a cool prof. He relates to his students on a understanding level while making class fun while learning. I highly recommend him to anyone taking history. NO ONE will be better than Beam!
Beam: looks like a drill drill sergeant that could pummel you into the ground. Wears suits awkwardly,(picture a salesmen with an ink stain pen pocket), speaks soft and raspy almost exactly the attitude and style a surfer would. extremely funny, and critical of all sides of politics, making it fair. talks about real history, not buttered up version.
one of the best history teachers i have ever had. he makes it intresting and you learn about things no other teacher would teach you. he also takes all sides, no bias there
Awesome Teacher! He has a great sense of humor and tries to give multiple perspectives. Midterm and Final are essay, so if you don't like that, he may not be for you. I didn't like essays before this class, but became a much better essay writer due to it. Entertaining and interesting.
Prof. Beam is awesome. I learned so much and was extremely pleased with his teaching style. He makes learning fun and really knows his subject. He tells you the REAL History of History. Mr.Beam is the Pimp of History. Everyone should take him, I wish he taught everything-he is a true example of how a Prof. should be-he sets the standard. GO BEAM!!
He is very loud in his lecturing style, which annoyed me after a while. (This is a great class if you're hard of hearing! lol) If you're a good essay writer you will do well. I got an A and it wasn't overly hard. I'm sure he is not the worst teacher there is, but in my nearly 2-year career at this school he is my least favorite.
This guy knows his stuff and has a unique teaching style. He makes history interesting. However, he can be quite rude to his students. He is very harsh when grading essays so be sure to follow his format EXACTLY as given. OK teacher, but would not recommend him. Felt more like an English class in some respects; very subjective grader.
There are ups and downs to this class. He knows what he is talking about, and he tries really hard to make sure you know that HE is the only "expert" on the subject. Save yourself the headache - don't raise your hand/involve yourself in the "discussions" because he will just shoot you down, regardless of your opinion.
Honestly Professor Beam is an amazing teacher. This is coming from someone who has always hated History. He is very passionate about the subject and teaches in a way you understand completely. He does not stress about grades making it a stressless environment. I would highly recomend taking the class. He is by far the best teacher i have ever had.
Everyone attends class although it is not manditory. He always has the classes full attention. It is not a boring class where he just lectures, he gets the class involved and for once we actually learn. Unlike many teacher i have had in the past. Not to mention he is great to look out with a great sense of humor.
One of the most unique teachers i ever had. He's pretty much a surfer/navy sergeant. He is very funny and may appear to be rude but he just does this to keep your attention. He is a great teacher and this class is easy to get an A in as long as you do the few essays he assigns. Please take this class you won't regret it.
Great teacher gets u involved
He is awesome, we had a midterm, a final and one quiz, class participation is everything, it's really more of a debate class, you throw out your opinion on something and argue your point everyone laughs and has fun, it's a long class but I think it's an easy A and you'll learn some new things about your country.
Great professor. He wants to teach you how to think about history. Not what to think. If you can take the time to follow the proper essay format you'll do very well in his class. Highly engaged professor.
Mr. Beam is a great teacher. He's very passionate about what he teaches and makes his class enjoyable.
Do your education a favor and take this class. Beam encourages thinking outside the box and questioning mainstream viewpoints. This class should be mandatory, too many individuals go through school memorizing vocab and taking notes not realizing what it really means to learn something. Beam was the best choice I ever made. Truly a game changer.
He's the best professor I've ever had at Moorpark. The class consists of him completely blowing your mind with lectures, then you go home and question everything you've ever learned about history life , read the text, write a few paragraph responses every now and then... Easy, beneficial, and vital to your education... TAKE THIS CLASS
Super motivating, passionate and enthusiastic professor. Yes he does lecture and it can get a little on the boring side, but for the most part he is super engaging! When he starts going there is no need to be doing something else you're all ears!
Loved his lectures! Very interesting and the thing that made it better is that you can tell that he's passionate about what he's teaching. It not boring at all.
He was a super cool teacher with a passion for what he does. He does not tell you how to think, he just makes sure that you question everything. If he sees you put in effort he will have your back. If you dont care about his class, he wont care about your grade. Definitely need the textbooks and taking good notes helps.
Funny and down to earth. Really loves what he does! Not much work but a handful of papers. I would take him again! Me and my boyfriend sometimes laugh thinking about his class because he is a pretty great guy.
Mr. Beam is by far my favorite Professor!
If only all professors could be like him. Such a positive attitude towards teaching. I never cared for history up until his class. He's not all about tests and papers and homework and all the regular stuff. Show up, participate, engage yourself, write two papers, read each chapter, done. Highly highly recommend!!!
Really like Rome. Loud, talks a lot but is super laid back. Really wants the class to show interest in the information. likes to try to do something different each class to keep you interested. Mid-term/final were pretty long/time consuming but I think I over thought it. other than that just show up, he wants to be social, bought us pizza! lol
Such a great professor! Don't be intimidated by his rough and loud voice! He sounds like a street guy, but full of knowledge indeed! He clearly cares about his students to learn History. He likes to mostly lecture, and does not like being interrupted by questions very much! So, just listen, do your homework, participate, and get an "A"
You want an easy A? Take Beam!! He is not only an amazing teacher but his class is simple and easy. Read the assigned homework, show up to class, participate and you will get an A. He doesnt believe in testing memorizing dates. You have a midterm and a final. I took his class twice and wish he taught more!!
Do all the assignments and you'll get an A. There are debates but as long as you present something you get 100 points. He will always answer questions but he does go off topic a bit. Overall easy class. Good class if history isn't normally easy for you.
Took this for 4 week summer class. All his assignments are really really time consuming and his quizzes towards the end are all FRQs which take a long time but they're not timed. He's very strict with how to do assignments and essays, His class was pretty much all essays and thesis paragraphs. Not forgiving for my full time job.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He is a little intimidating at first but stick through it. He keeps it 1000% real and honest. If you get offended easily about politics or in denial about the American History don't take it. He is very funny, very informative, and very caring. Always look forward to that class.
At first the class might seem overwhelming because of how organized Professor Beam is, but once you can grasp how to write a paper using his writing methodology, then your set for the entire course. He gives great writing examples, and if you don't understand it, just ask, that is what he is there for. Overall, don't slack off, JUST DO THE WORK!
Professor Beam structures the course in a way that allows for you to get an "A", but it's up to you if your willing to put in the time to do the work. The paragraphs, if you have read, should take you anywhere from 15-30 minutes. The due dates allow for you to start writing the midterm and final early, and I recommend it. He allowed rewrites.
It is an easy A if you follow Mr Beam's instructions. Two major papers, midterm and final which you know about the topics since day one. there are quizzes with multiple choices first half semester, then quizzes with 3 question free response. He does go off topic, so you do need to read. Put some effort, EASY A
I looked forward to attending Prof Beam's class every week, his course was organized and all on canvas from day one. Pay attention to due dates and do the work! The grading criteria is always given to you in advance, and as long as you understand the grading criteria and listen to what Beam says, than you will have no problem at all passing.
Awesome class. Super easy, just time consuming when it came to exams/quizes but they're not timed so don't stress. My only complaint: I wish there were less debates and more lectures because he's so passionate and informative when he gives lectures, fun and interesting to listen to.
Professor Beam is an absolute character! I got off to a rocky start with his grading criteria, but once you understand what he specifically is looking for when grading his class becomes a lot easier. He comes off aggressive and loud, but he's actually a sincere man whose willing to work with you, despite his in-class attitude. A fun, easy, A!
Teacher overall is pretty great. No tests in this class and the debates are easy A's. Lectures often got politicized and definitely became uncomfortable at times but its hard to avoid politics with history. Lectures are never boring and he managed to make night classes enjoyable. I would give him a 4.5 if I could. Overall a really great teacher.
Was more of a History/Debate class than a traditional History class. This would have scared me away had I known, but I actually really enjoyed it by the end. Beam was fantastic about grading and putting the current grades on Canvas. I wish more COC professors would utilize Canvas like he does. Essays are easy if you read his grading rubric.
Great teacher! Be sure you show up for EVERY single debate as most of your grade is based off of them. Also, do not miss any quizzes either. Professor Beam is a great teacher to take if History isnt your thing. There are a few multiple choice quizzes at the beginning, then the rest of them are free response. One of the easiest As Ive gotten.
I took Professor Beam during the Fall 2017 semester, and honestly man I miss his class! He allowed rewrites, and also was a fair grader when it came to the debates in class. I wish he taught Western Civilization at Moorpark College, truly a great professor!
I took his online US History class and overall my experience was decent. He assigns so many thesis essay paragraphs, quizzes, discussions, and essays for mid term and final. At first, he graded pretty heavy but then he became more lenient later in the semester, maybe he just had a lot of papers to read. Overall, you work for your grade!
I always hated History in highschool because it was boring but this professor is awesome! I took the online class and I learned a lot! It kept me interested. The videos and lectures are amazing. His very knowledgeable.
At the beginning of the semester I could not stand Beam because he comes off so cocky & rude. If anyone asks questions he roasts them basically. Overall, by the end of the semester I ended up liking Beam because he did teach and make the lecture interesting. The class work itself is fairly easy once you get the hang of his writing style!
Going into this class, I despised history. I hated it. And my first day I thought this dude was rude and mean. He looks and sounds rude but trust me, he isnt. Midterm and final both are online and are essays. Do a couple of thesis paragraphs and debates but dont worry about debates. Gives 100 to every group. Hes so awesome. Take him and do work
Lets be straightforward here, God King Beam exemplifies everything youd want in an awesome teacher. Hes caring, motivational, and hilarious. He gives great feedback and honestly wants his students to succeed. Imagine eating inn n out for the first time, you know that feeling? Thats him. Greatest teacher ever. Extra cheese and fries. Yaknowit
He's pretty funny. He lectures in class and almost all work is online. He does group debates but it's not really a debate. Your group writes a 5 paragraph essay on a yes-or-no topic and read it in front of the class. Multiple choice quizzes are easier than his free response. Reading the texts will help a lot.
Tremendous professor. Took him for an online history class and really had a great experience. Not a harsh grader and willing to accommodate student's needs. Plus he responds to emails quickly unlike many other professors. Highly recommend!!
This was such an engaging history class to take, Mr. Beam is a fantastic lecturer. He is sarcastic, knowledgeable, and funny. Mr. Beam may seem scary to approach, but he is actually so nice and easy going. He gives second tries on assignments, and the group debates are a breeze. Take this class!
I thought I had reviewed him a month into the class because I hated this class in the beginning, but I cannot find my review (I was going to change it anyway). I have since changed my mind about Beam, he's an awesome teacher. I didn't get the writing format until the VERY end, but he gives you a chance to re-write and gives you feedback.
100% recommend Mr Beam
Class is made up of quizzes (which you get unlimited attempts on), discussion posts (which you will always get full credit on if you fully answer the prompt), and two essays (which he lets you revise). He is not a harsh grader. I definitely recommend this class. Easy A.
History is one of my worst subjects but Professor Beam made this class so easy and enjoyable! Easy grading & gives feedback on how to approve, as well as allows for rewrites! Midterm & final were both essays, as well as he offered an extra credit essay on a history movie of your choice (60 points which is a lot!)
Loved Beams class! I enjoyed the work with the taking sides textbook. Helps you understand both sides of peoples perspectives on historical events. As long as you write thorough discussion posts and replies and take the quizzes youll do great. The midterm and final essays were a bit rough but he makes it clear what he wants and allows a rewrite!
I took his class online and since history isnt my favorite or strong subject I dreaded his class. Hes a nice professor and easy grader just make sure youre on top of things. The midterm and final are both essays, its pretty boring not gonna lie. But youll get by.
From what I can tell, Prof. Beam is much better at in-person classes than he is with completely online courses. I taught myself in this course and I got 100% on every assignment. He answers questions quickly, but we read the lecture slides ourselves so there wasn't any other interaction with him other than announcements. Lots of typos as well.
History was not my best subject, but after taking his class in the Summer, I would say he made it really enjoyable. There are discussions and quizzes super easy. There is a midterm and final which are both essays and are allowed a rewrite on the midterm with good feedback. There is a fun assignment for extra credit to watch a history movie.
Discussions worth 30 points and have heavy reading. Reading is very wordy and outdated english. It will take you at least a whole 2 days to find out what the handout is saying because of how old the english is. Stressful class to say the least.
Automates Canvas so he doesn't have to do much. Locks each module down so tight that you can't see assignments to manage your time with other classes. Nice guy but too rigid. You need to be a solid writer to not look dumb in public discussion postings because he requires you to analyze and synthesize EVERYTHING. I already earned my A in English.
There are two papers with very clear guidelines. As long as you follow his rubric and go off the textbook you will do great. There is a discussion and quiz for each lesson. Take the discussion seriously and go in depth and it is a guaranteed 100%. He sets you up for a high grade but it does take work.
The teacher takes time to give solid feedback to students. You will have to read the textbook and the reading prompts to d o well. Also it is a plus if you are a strong writer for this course. If you are not a strong writer I wouldn't recommend this for you since you are required to write on a weekly basis.
If youre looking for a professor that you can learn from, Professor Beam is the best. Ive already taken all of his classes, and I graduated a few years ago. However his lessons are still with me today. He isnt your average bald guy, this man is extremely intelligent. He cares about his students, and teaches with a passion. Take his class
Professor Beam definitely knows his material. History is not for everyone, however, it reveals much of today's actions, and Professor Beam knows just how to engage you. I took the 4-wk summer session and the course was not as tedious as I expected. We had a quiz for every ch., a discussion per week, a midterm paper, and a final paper.
I took Prof. Beam through the summer four week class and was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned and how easy he graded. It's very easy to get an A as long as you explain your position and provided evidence. There is a lot of reading, which is the only reason I found it a little harder. Other than that, he is always available for help!
Lots of reading for summer course, but I was able to pass quizzes by just watching the recommended media (actually really entertaining!) Prof. Beam is super caring, and easy grader. Quizzes can be retaken unlimited times, midterm can be rewritten; there's basically no reason to fail this class! Not a huge fan of history, but he makes it engaging.
A lazy professor that doesn't make their own class (quizlet) and somehow thinks they can still drop the hammer on you when grading your midterm and final. Feel sorry for any Hist. majors taking his course. Ppl like him because there is very little to his course. Lazy professor for lazy students only contributing to lowering the value of ur degree.
He was a good professor we had quizzes and discussions every week, none of the due dates changed, and with these assignments it's easy to get a good grade as long as you keep up with the work load. Essays is where he wasn't great, his instructions weren't clear, you had to turn essays in through a text box, and you can't always format properly.
Lots of reading, but if you get the gist of the chapters you will get an A. He is an easy grader and if you follow his clear essay criteria you will get an A. Beware of the discussion due dates as they are different than the ones on the canvas calendar. I missed the due date a few times and he let me make it up for full credit. Great prof!
Beam is good at making you think about not only just the history but the ideas that differ between now and then. He challenges your views on different subjects you probably haven't thought about before, which is a nice change from your average timeline-memorization history class. Discussions are engaging and quizzes are easy as long as you read.
This was one of my two teachers for my first semester back at school. His class was awesome! He offered great feedback, and genuinely cares. The impression he gave me, is that he is passionate about what he does, and tries to get his students deeply involved in the subject matter. I learned more in this class than my entire time in high school.
Great professor.
you can tell how passionate he is about history. I think it's ALOT of reading, but I don't mind, it's just something to be aware of.
He is a by-the-book professor and looks for reason to give bad grades. He grades all tests by hand and has the authority to assign either a good or bad grade, which is unfair.
Professor Beam is great at making history engaging. The heavy reading and discussions can be challenging, but using unstuck AI and the free textbook resources really helped me grasp the material. Overall, an interesting class if you're willing to put in the work.
Great professor would definitely take a class with him again. His assignments were straightforward and gave you a good grade if you put in the work. He always gave good constructive feedback and graded in a timely manner.
I took an 8-week class with Prof. Beam, so all work seemed more condensed but totally doable. His quizzes didn't always coincide with readings, which was frustrating. LOTS of reading, but you get used to it. Discussions were challenging but really pushed me to learn. I feel that I understand history to a greater level now. I'd recommend his class.
Took has 8-week US history class. Super difficult to keep up with quizzes and discussions and a LOT of material / videos. Quizzes were the hardest of my life and often some qs have nothing even to do with material. But Prof Beam is always willing to do office hours and answers questions + super passionate about history so just ask him for help.
I took him for the semester and for most of the class it was the same busy work per week, each with a interesting topic and lesson. One nitpick I have with him is the fact that he wants midterm/final to be sourced only by primary sources. However, it is made up by the fact that he has plenty of extra credit and easily contactable. Great class.
