He's a great teacher. He makes the lectures engaging with activities in each lecture. He explains concepts very well and gives lots of examples related to the concepts. I think he understands what is it to be a university student. You can get a fair mark as long as you try.
I like him as a person but not as a professor. Doesn't use class time effectively (ie. he will spend half an hour at the beginning of class talking about administrative issues, and throughout lecture will take unnecessary and somewhat irrelevant questions from students, then take 5 minutes to give a 30 second answer). ILPs were also stressful.
Amazing! He was so engaging and really cared about the students and the subject. He was very understanding of the stress that students are under and accommodated schedules with the use of ILPs so everyone could play into their strengths. I would love to take another course with him! I wanted to do well for him too, not just myself.
Amazing prof. He does his job and he does it extremely well. You can tell he dedicates SO much of his time (if not all of it) to being the best prof he can be. It's very inspirational actually. He also encourages his students to email him directly (we're talking in a class of 1500+ students) THAT's amazing. Wish I was more interested in Sociology!
NICEST GUY. He dedicates so much of his time to this class, you can really tell that he cares about us as students. He is always open to helping people. I can't say enough about how much I appreciate all of the time and effort he puts into our giant class.
Best professor in my first year experience. Make sure you show up to class for in class participation marks, contribute online, and review review review! It is a very simple multiple choice based class with 2 major, but easy assignments.
Prof Caron is amazing! He's super helpful, and makes sure students understand the material well. He makes his lectures very interesting, and his fashion sense is on point (you will love the sweater vests)! Keep rocking prof Caron, you are the best. :)
Awesome professor!
This guy is actually unreal. Nicest dude, rocks the sweater vest so hard. His "bless you" line is classic. I really hope he's my professor in other sociology/criminology courses down the road!
Literally the best and nicest prof ever! He's so sweet and always does his best to answer everyone's questions and helps whoever needs it. His sweater vest collection is also so on point
Christian Caron was one of the best professors i've had, he made sociology class engaging and would always make the class fun and interesting. It was very easy to understand the material that he was teaching. I would recommend this class to anyone who wanted to start getting into the Sociology field.
AMAZING PROF!!
One of my favourite professors during first year. He was so helpful answering emails and discussion board questions, as well as on Twitter. Very thorough and interesting. It also helps that he is nice to look at! Can't wait to take is Crime and Deviance course next year! :)
Awesome prof! Makes class really interesting and does try his hardest to help his students with any questions or concerns. He's really understanding and does make an effort to connect with his students. I really hope everyone gets a chance to be his student!
Great prof. His lectures are engaging and he's always available to help. His sweater vests >
Great Prof!! But if you do the textbook readings don't even bother coming to class, he talks about the exact same things.
GREAT prof, super dedicated and very easy to communicate with via Twitter/Email. You can tell he is just such a genuinely nice guy who loves what he teaches!
great professor
he goes out of his way to help students he really cares and wants your success- many office hours, encourages& replies to ALL emails of a class of 1500, lectures are a bit boring he almost repeats what's in the textbook but he's still a great prof, very knowledgable (+ he's VERY good looking)
Prof. Caron was definitely my favorite prof this year! I like his system of i-clicker participation points, easy way to get marks while forcing you to attend lecture and do the readings. He is a really nice guy and answers any questions.
Super hot, amazing professor, the course wouldn't have been the same without him
Easy and nice prof
He was so helpful and so ready to help everyone, even if he had to go out of his way to do it! Definitely helped me survive first year!
One of the best profs at UofT! His ILP (Individual Learning Plan) system allows everyone to be graded on their strengths. I never talked to him personally, but he was quick to respond to questions through email or on the discussion board. He makes the class interesting as well. I recommend his classes!
Very cool and helpful prof but horrible course. Too ideologically driven to be interesting. The right answer is what they tell you it is...
AMAZING PROF. Lectures are organized and clear, tests and expectations quite fair and straightforward. You'll do well if you put in effort. What distinguishes him is that he genuinely cares about students and responds to them individually. He doesn't seem fake, pretending to care about you or playing favorites, like some other profs I know. Superb!
One of the best professors I've ever encountered, he's one of those that you'd want to take ever course he teaches, not specifically for the course but bc he's just someone you'd want to learn from. Doesn't show favouritism and is really welcoming of all questions and comments.
A really boring course, and the prof doesn't make it any better. Actually I think there would be no lots of difference if the course was taught completely online
The course itself is very dry and boring, but Caron attempts to make the material interesting. You NEED to attend class as there are in class participation marks. The tests are really easy, most of the questions are common sense.
My favourite professor during my first year at uoft! He's willing to sacrifice his time (beyond office hours) to help you and his lectures, though the general nature of first year courses can be boring, are thorough and interactive. He's such a cutie!!
Amazing professor!! If you are efficient with your time and use your resources wisely you can do extremely well, plus he is willing to cater to your needs as a student. I very much enjoyed this class with him.
Extremely nice guy. Will go out of his way to help you in any way he can. Answers all emails really fast and posts frequent reminders to students. Managed to create somewhat of a classroom environment in a 1500 student lecture hall, which is a great achievement. If you go to his office hours, you'll find he's an extremely friendly and relatable guy
Lectures are pretty organized and have great relevance with the textbook. tests are fairly easy if you did the readings and grading on term papers is also fair. so basically if you put some effort you should be good. the prof is definitely approachable and helpful.
Professor Caron has got to be the most kind man out there. He is extremely clear in his lectures, and very straight forward. He is very understanding and helpful. He is also very organized and definitely in the best interest of his students. He puts up several online mini lectures to help you further understand a topic. Best of the best .
He's fantastic, he's one of the few profs at U of T who really cares about teaching and invests a lot of extra time with students. As cheesy as it sounds, learning with him is actually an experience rather than just a chore.
Very interesting teacher, and it is a very interactive class. that said it is not an easy A and this class is a lot of work but it is very rewarding. One of the best professors I've ever had. He treats his students like peers or coworkers a quality that is hard to come by at U of T.
Prof Caron is easily one of the best profs I've had this year. He really and truly cares for his students, and goes out of his way to help. He is very clear, very easy to listen to, and he makes lectures interesting. I would definitely not hesitate to take a class with him again! If you have a chance, go for it!!
He is the nicest and most hardworking professor I have ever met.
Always there for you when you're unsure about the content. Extremely approachable and gives clear explanations.
Professor Caron is the best when it comes to teaching. He is crystal- clear with his explanations and his lectures are always very well- organised. Also he tries extremely hard to help students and to be relatable too. He is so sweet !
Gives you the chance to choose what 40% of your mark will be based off of - reflections, online posts, long essay, or in-class participation. You can choose any combination. The other 60% comes from a midterm and the final.
Absolutely amazing professor and individual. One of the very rare professors at the university who actually cares about you.
Professor Caron is an exceptional professor. As the previous comments have mentioned, he truly does care about the academic success of his students. His passion for the course content and for teaching shines through during lecture which keeps you engaged. Amazing professor, a gem to UofT's faculty, staff, and department of sociology.
This was my second course with Professor Caron (I last took SOC212) with him, and finishing up my third year at U of T I can confidently say he is one of my favourite professors. Do not be fooled the content in this class is CHALLENGING but he cares so much about his students & gives you many opportunities to succeed!
The Best.
Really sweet, and willing to go out of his way to help students. Understands the first year can be tough and really tries to accommodate for that. Content Analysis assignment was a bit tedious and quite long but was marked fairly and didn't wasn't difficult, just time consuming.
Huge class, so I've never spoken to him, but he clearly knows how to prepare and give great lectures, which is refreshing . The course itself pretty easy (multiple choice testsexam, content analysis) and you could do pretty well just out of the textbook, but participating in online discussion and tutorials is a huge part of the experience too.
Professor Caron always makes himself available to his students. He dedicates most of his time to his work and students which allows us to succeed. He tries to incorporate participation activities so we achieve easy marks. He attempts to make his courses fun by initiating in class discussions and incorporating real life elements into our studies.
Christian Caron is a pretty good professor. He is entertaining, explains concepts clearly, asks and answers questions and is a good course instructor. However lectures were long and sometimes I fall asleep. So be careful if you are not interested in sociology, because you really have to be focused on lectures. Midterms are all multiple-choice.
Prof. Caron is very good at what he's doing. You can tell that he is passionate about his field of study. Also, he is a very nice and funny person and went out of his way to help his students. The best prof at UofT! It was a little hard to focus during class though as he is insanely attractive and dreamy.
This class is awesome! Professor Caron is an amazing professor who explains material well and engages the class. I would take this class over if I had too. His tests are fairly mangeable considering that you study. His tests are based on textbook material and somewhat of his lectures. But in general, this class is fair.
Great prof, super interesting course. The lectures are long but pass quickly since they are very clear and fascinating. He's also very kind and helpful. Loves sweater vests.
Absolutely phenomenal lecturer. Because of him I'm considering switching to a Sociology program. He distills each concepts down to our level then turns up the complexity. Truly a kick-ass prof.
His lectures contain iClicker questions- easy to answer, annoying b/c you can't skip. Tests are EZ- lots of A's given out here. Unfortunately he has a year-end project and forum participation, which is rude. As well, weekly "portfolios" where you submit 200 words about whatever subject your TA assigns. Would not recommend if not mandatory.
Mediocre professor, absolutely horrendous course structure. His SOC101 course is little more than common sense with some jargon thrown in for good measure. Notes aren't neccessary, all his info is on his slides. Would not reccomend, he barely delves into any sociological literature. If you enjoyed grade 8 social studies, you'll enjoy this course.
One of my favorite professors, well respected by students, and an excellent speaker, very passionate about what he teaches. It's important to follow up with the readings and the participation portions of the full year course.
Professor Caron was brilliant and enthusiastic about the course. A strong believer in participation, he provided many modes that a shy student earn full peer contribution marks: iclicker & online discussion board (eased the pressure). Also, he allowed us to use a cheat sheet for the final exam (Goal: understanding, not memorization).
Good prof, need to show up in class though. Course content overall was fair if you do your work
Really great prof! He truly cares about his students, and it shows. This was a con hall class but if you raised a hand, he'd be the one to come to you. He also gave many opportunities to succeed in this course, but it was definitely up to you if you wanted to take them. I highly recommend any course with him!
Caron's powerpoints were complete replicas of the information from the textbook, however you have to show up to class to earn participation points. Caron is clearly very enthusiastic about sociology and genuinely cares about his students (plus he's nice to look at); but the content analysis project (hugely affecting your grade) is very tedious.
Forced us to show up to lecture through baiting with class participation (clickers). Lectures were dry, but I suppose that's just the content and isn't entirely his fault.
I enjoyed SOC101 with Caron, especially being a freshman student who felt apprehensive about the new learning environment. He made the class feel welcoming (which is saying something - there were 1000 students). He was extra helpful and tried to get students to state their opinions on various subjects. He made the content analysis bearable.
Had him twice. Really nice guy. He is very fair. Course load is medium but very heavy class participation. You have to do clickers in the first year courses and in his upper year courses he makes you do in-class assignments. Overall, a very good prof. Would take again.
He is passionate with what he is teaching. Concepts are well explained with real life examples. But a lot of contents in the textbook were not covered in the lectures so it takes much additional time to do the readings. The content analysis and tests are hard. Recommend the course to whoever are interested in sociology but not as an elective course
Boring class, boring prof.
Easy grade plus a good prof
best soc prof
Very unengaging lecturer.
It was more the course than anything but he was very nice about accomodating. He gave a 3.5 day extension on a paper to the whole class, and was very caring towards commuters who might miss iclickers. The course itself is pretty gross, I strongly suggest checking out the syllabus to see if its something you would like
My favourite professor at UofT. He is so nice and actually cares about his students. He gave us an extension on our final CA project because we requested one. He also always says "bless you" after someone sneezes in Con Hall. Clicker participation is also very important so do show up at every lecture. Lectures are detailed and helpful. Great prof!
Favourite prof. He is the sweetest guy and really made lectures enjoyable. I found the course interesting and never dreaded going to his class. He really incorporates class discussion well considering the class is huge.
Wonderful professor. He cares about the students in a genuine way and it is reflected by the way he gives extensions, his announcements that give so much detail and compassion, and he stays back after every lecture to make sure any issues students may have is properly addressed. His lectures are mostly engaging, I can't find much bad to say.
His lectures were boring but he clearly is invested in what he teaches. The guy is nice enough but he's not a good prof.
He's boring lol. If you're taking SOC because its introductory, I'd reconsider. The material is dry as hell and he doesn't do much to keep people interested.
You can tell he genuinely cares about students and loves his job. A good chunk of your grade is easily earned from clicker quizzes, online participation, and weekly journal entries. Also gave the whole class an extension on our year long project. The material and lectures can get boring but it's not his fault
A caring professor. But, do yourself a favour and don't take SOC101. It's hands down the worst course I've ever taken at U of T. Very boring lectures, material wasn't interesting or useful, tutorials were slow-paced.
He is excellent as a lecturer himself. He makes the lectures very interactive. From going through the whole course, it shows that the professor really wanted us to do well. The tests were only 10% each. iClicker questions, a simple portfolio and peer contribution grades (these are easy marks) for 35% of the whole grade.
By far the most fair and caring professor at UofT. SOC101Y was carefully structured to give students the opportunity to succeed. Didn't do a single reading throughout the year, just went to lecture and took notes. He made the subject interesting by engaging the class of 1400. I think he matches his outfits to his slides, because he's that awesome.
Caron was the most caring Prof I had first year. He took the time to clarify material and expand on the readings. Power points were clear and helpful for the tests. The class and material itself is extremely easy to understand and thus, can get very boring. He tries his best to engage the class AND matches his outfits to the power point slides!!
Very caring prof at UofT, best I have had so far. Very understanding for all his students, even connects with classrooms in large spaces such as con hall. Very approachable after class if need any help. Thank you!
Professor Caron is definitely one of the most amazing teachers I have ever met. He is very smart and knows how to teach his course materials. He wants his students to succeed and is very, very helpful. He is also very respectful, friendly, accessible, and the list could go on... I highly recommend him! :)
Caron seems to be a really caring prof, but the lectures are tough to get through. The material of this course is brutally dry. He walks around con hall to try and engage the students, but I wish there was more interesting lecturing and less Q&A time and "talking to our peers" to find out the answers. Overall, I do not recommend this course.
professor caron doesn't answer his emails. he's just not accessible at all, even when it comes to matters relating directly to the course. i've had to send multiple copies of the same email before receiving a response. it seems like this prof just doesn't have time for his students. lectures are also somewhat bland.
Professor Caron is adorable and really wants his students to succeed. I wish he would teach more upper-year courses so I could take more of his classes. I can see why others may find his lectures boring, but it really does depend on the person. He exudes this welcoming, calming, friendly atmosphere that makes me feel so comfortable to be around.
he cares for his students alot. he wants them to succeed, and provides the proper resources for his students to allow for them to excel. I would 100% take his classes again
I had Professor Caron in first year and he was my favourite. Very peppy, knew what he was talking about & made the class interesting. He also always matched his sweater vest to the slides which was cool. His assignments and TA's were awesome.
Christian Caron is very nice and caring, and you can tell he values his work immensely. However I found the sociology course quite boring, likely because the content is very dry. He tries his best to engage the students and amplify participation but I was not very engaged with the intro course. Also, he rarely finishes his slides in class.
Professor Caron is very enthusiastic about his material, which is great, but unfortunately SOC100H1 was extremely boring. I found many of the concepts repetitive, as I had learned them in high school. However, as a professor, he is great. He is very responsive with the students, answers everyone's emails, etc. (even though class is 1000 people)!
I just finished up SOC100 in Professor Caron's class. Not sure how well I did, but I seriously have no bad things to say about him. Prof. Caron is super nice, and wants all of his students to succeed. If you put in some effort, you are guaranteed to do well.
great prof man
Professor Caron is by far the best professor at the University of Toronto, and the best professor in the department of sociology. He goes above and beyond for his students. If you are in class and take notes, you will receive an A. Marks are given back quick and always makes time for students. 1000% would recommend.
I had him for the first time this past semester. He is really nice and caring, and makes it really easy for students to do well and not fall behind.
Somewhat boring class due to simple content but decent lecturer and nice guy
His lectures were extremely repetitive, useless, and slow. The exam was way too long to be sufficiently completed in 3 hours! The exams length did not reflect any aspects of his slow and redundant lectures aside from seldom mentioned material, it mostly focused on readings. I thought it would be much easier, too much studying for this course
Nice guy, meh prof. Poor pacing. Focused too much on easy concepts. Some readings & concepts taught were interesting, some common sense. Unreasonable exam for intro class. Though questions were given beforehand, it's physically impossible for a 3h exam. I wrote nonstop & was short 6 single spaced pgs from the expected max. Disappointed after SOC100
the lecture material was dull but thankfully he put up the powerpoints which was basically all you needed to do for the final.
He's a good lecturer but spends lots of lecture time answering and asking students questions which gets really boring
nice guy but lectures are boring and if you took sociology in high school you don't need to take this. he posts his slides, readings are unnecessary, and the material is easy to grasp. it's sitting through it for two hours that's the problem. listening to 45 mins per lecture of student questions that can all be answered by the syllabus is torture.
Lots of reading & homework. If you don't stay on top of the readings and lecture material you will quickly fall behind. He was clear, thorough and very understanding. I enjoyed the course and i'd take another one of his classes again!
Very unclear when lecturing, and completely unorganized with his slides. He leaves you feeling like you sat there for no reason having learned nothing. No concepts are explained, and he doesn't actually teach anything. All he does is let the same people in class raise their hands and eat up all the class time with pointless conversation. Horrible.
The tests that this prof. writes are extremely difficult. He makes them open book, which sounds good, but because they're open book, he really, really tries to trip you up with trick questions and tiny details. I find his exam questions overly vague given the response options. They're really unfair to be honest.
Love this class! Interesting material and personally did not find the midterm hard. Caron a really nice guy
Co taught by McIvor and Caron. Carons lectures are interesting and engaging. Midterm was open book and online, 3 different times to take it. You cant just memorize or rely on it being open book, its all application questions which makes some people mad. Go to lecture, read the book, understand vs memorize.
He is a knowledgeable prof, can tell from his lecture and shared experience. However, his lecture are really boring. No offense but his voice makes me want to fall asleep. The course content are not hard but the test are, so be aware.
This class was just ok. Went into it with a love for sociology and came out somewhat disliking it. Lectures do not accurately reflect testing - is my biggest complaint. Additionally, the tests are confusing.
Prof. Caron was amazing! He had good lecture slides and made real-life connections to the content. Read the textbook, attend lectures and take good notes because the final is 50% and the mid-term is 25%. Both had MC but final also had short answers. I'd skim the textbook, take lecture notes, and then review the theories from the textbook again.
He talks like a preacher. He makes good connections between content in the course, but he moves the lecture along very slowly. He also didn't give a break in the middle of two hour lectures.
Hi was overall ok, a bit boring at times but content was interesting so was fine. A lot of reading but I still got a good grade without doing any of the readings due to the open book tests.
Very passionate about sociology and makes many great connections between the topics to solidify your learning. In the online summer class, he offered many ways to bring your mark up but the midterm and exam were weighed a lot so be sure to attend lectures and read the textbook. Overall, he had many resources and ways to access him outside class.
Caron engages the class (even with 1000+ students) - if you do the readings you will succeed and readings act as a springboard for the lectures. All important concepts needed to know for assignments are cherry-picked and put in verbally lectured. Though at the start of the course he could have outlined learning objectives more clearly.
Amazing professor - explains concepts extremely clearly and very approachable during office hours/class!
Prof. Caron is incredibly nice and accommodating. The grading is pretty flexible and he does a great job teaching during lecture time, the tests are pretty straightforward and he prepares you well for them!
Professor Caron brings the material to life with engaging lectures. While the readings are a must, he ties them well to the course content. The midterm was application-focused, so studying with resources like Unstuckstudy really helped me grasp the concepts. Overall, a manageable but rewarding class.
First, he is clearly a brilliant guy and is nice and knowledgeable. However, I have never had a larger amount of work in any course ever. Truly an obscene amount of work on top of a midterm and final exam. Hard to sustain with, ya know, other courses too.
He cares about his students, always communicated about dates/exams and lectures adding everything he can do. It's better to actually go to class its once a week for 2 hours, and he adds on top of the slides good notes you can write down.
I am a life sciences student and I have next to no interest in Sociology, however Dr. Caron is an amazing lecturer and keeps things fun and interesting. Life changing class. Very dedicated. TAs are very good as well.
Stop and talk to him after class, even if you don't have a question!!! Such a friendly guy, always willing to chat about class concepts, will talk to every person who approaches him. Loves what he does- stops for questions, elaborates on concepts, posts lots of review, goes above and beyond with office hours, offers extra credit through disc posts.
I appreciate the fact that I was debating between two peer contribution special projects, and he took the time to read both at office hours.(gave me feedback) Although I did not end up doing either haha :) I realized the discussion boards were way more fun! He is an amazing professor, and I will forever be honoured to have attended his lectures.
He made accommodations for us and was fair. To be successful, go through the slides and the textbook, and watch the office hour recordings if you have time. Downsides, I would say, are the tutorials, which aren't helpful, and the textbook, which is quite heavy, but he is very caring and passionate.
GOAT. KING. BEST PROF EVER. Dr. Caron is actually the best..he assigns readings everyweek, tutorial participation is required, discussion posts, + EASY assesments. Caring and kind prof, you can tell he's passionate in what he teaches, and this makes you more engaged in lectures - which are content heavy but he makes it easy. Truly goated.
His lectures were amazing and easy to pay attention to. He always lets you know what will be on the exams and what is expected of you. The TAs are also great, and the tutorials + peer contributions are mandatory. He also gives access to recordings and slides, which are very helpful. I would definitely recommend this course, and he is a great prof.
Overall really great prof who cares about his students. You do have to buy a textbook, and you should read it to do well on tests. My TA sometimes didn't seem like she actually read the assignment instructions and sometimes gave incorrect info. Assignment was graded fairly harsh. Exam was 50% of our grade. Good class overall.
