Ridiculously hard to understand, not because of his accent but because of his sentence and lecture structure. In my opinion his train of thought was all over the place and for most of the time I couldn't follow where he was going.
Do not take! He is horrible at explaining the concepts. He can't dumb it down enough for students to understand. Half of the things on the test he never talked about nor were they on the homework. Difficult to do well in his class, have to teach yourself. Must show up to class for clicker questions
Professor Hilty's chemistry class was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. His lectures are confusing and he assigns way too much homework. He does answer his emails quickly which is nice but other than that, I would avoid his class!!
Dr. Hilty is a good prof. Don't let these reviews scare you. He is very sweet and very knowledgeable about chem. I went to TutorJohn every week and that really helped make sense of his lectures, homework, and I was able to do a lot of practice problems. Hilty doesn't always explain the material well, so be sure to do all the homework and practice!
Dr. Hilty is a great prof. He loves Chemistry and has a true passion for teaching it. I used no tutoring services, i paid attention in class and took notes, and did the homework. The tests were fair and he never asked a question on his tests that weren't in the owls or daily clicker questions.
Homework and clicker counts for about 20% of the grade, so putting in effort gets you points off the bat. Tests are very reasonable and mainly over the owls. Grades are curved for each test and the overall grade was also curved. Very caring and nice guy. Solid choice.
HORRIBLE professor. Doesn't know how to teach and is unhelpful in office hours. His lectures don't follow the order of the book and doesn't post lectures until the day of class so it doesn't give you time to read ahead and be prepared. Then, in lecture, he speaks of the subject as if you're a colleagues and not students. I would never take again
Pchem is hard. Hilty teaches it like a grad level course. He has an accent and a fast lecture pace, which isn't a great combination. Read the textbook as well and you may have an idea of what's going on maybe. He tried his best. He's trying to work with us. Very open to feedback and answers questions thoroughly. Really nice guy, really hard class.
Chemistry is difficult as it is and with his accent + speedy lectures BUT he is a good professor. You actually have to understand what you're learning. He curves generously and his exams were difficult but predictable. As long as you genuinely take the time to understand the concepts and not do it the night before the test, you'll do fine in class.
He is honestly a great professor as long as you actually pay attention and then stay focused on class. He covers everything very well.
Dr. Hilty is a nice guy, but he is not a good professor. He doesn't explain topics well, and he NEVER answers questions in a clear way. Several times I have asked a question and wound up more confused. You can pass the class if you get a tutor/ go to SI sessions/ are a genius, but it'd be easier to just find a better professor.
Chemistry is by far one of the harder classes students take. Dr. Hilty makes it slightly harder. He teaches very quickly and at a higher level of understanding than other professors. He likes to manipulate formulas and concepts on the tests, so make sure you know what you're doing. It is very clear that he is passionate about his job.
So if you get him it isn't the end of the world. You definitely need to go to A plus but for chemistry you should be doing that regardless of your prof. You need to attend lecture for clicker questions but he also works out examples and shows step by step. Overall not a bad class bc he posts his lectures, if you take A plus youll probably make an A
He is a great and funny guy. Though, he is not the best at explaining what he does. He also goes very fast in class which makes it hard to understand what he is doing. His tests are very similar to the study guide. He curves the tests generously and his tests have NO short answer, all multiple choice which I personally think is great.
all multiple choice tests, seems like a sincere guy clicker questions every few classes, must get 75% right for full points. homework due every week, uses OWLv2. curves up to next letter grade. used tutoring because could not learn anything due to his lecture style. overall good guy; lots of outside work necessary unless you have solid chem base
Hilty is a nice guy but he doesn't know how to lecture. His tests are similar to the reviews and he curves. Homework is through cengage and is very tedious but you learn more from that than the prof. Attendance isn' t mandatory but he does clicker questions every class that factor into the grade.
Dr. Hilty is a good guy and he cares about his students, but his downfall is his lecture presentation. He simply reads the slides word for word and moves on without explanation or many examples. Attendance isnt mandatory but attendance is taken by clickers and you must answer a certain number of times to receive your full attendance credit.
Coming from a person with a solid background in chemistry, Dr. Hilty was good choice. Exams are based on lecture and homework content, and he gives practice questions which are really helpful. The lectures were bland at times, but the class was very manageable.
Passionate about chemistry but not good at explaining. Reads purely off the powerpoint. I learned mostly from the OWL Homework and had to go to tutoring to understand the content.
Hilty curves his tests pretty well, but his lectures don't help it all. Did not learn anything from him only from the textbook and tutoring.
Despite what some people may say here, if you take Dr. Hilty, you are setting yourself up for success. He does get caught up in the technical aspects of his lectures, but his tests are just like the reviews and he gives plenty of resources for you to do well. Show up for clicker questions, do the homework, and consult the TA, and you will be fine!
I ended up hating chemistry by the end of this course. Dr. Hilty reads straight from PowerPoint slides and his slides do absolutely nothing to help...I had to go to SI or outside tutoring in order to further understand the content. He'd explain it in such a complex way that never made sense to me. Most frustrating class I've ever had.
hes a really nice guy, but not too great as a prof. however, he does curve the tests and the overall class grade generously-my test averages were a B, C, D, and a C on the final, and i got a B on the class. homework, lab, and clicker questions are 50% of the grade pretty much. lots of homework, usually due at noon instead of midnight.
I personally found the class to be easy because the concepts from the homework applied directly to the test, so I didn't study that much and made a good grade. This was my experience with the class, but it won't be the same as other people's experiences. The tests reflected lectures and homework well. Pay attention in class and participate.
Very hard chem professor. He does not communicate in office hours clearly, and does not seem to care very much. LOTS OF HOMEWORK with not very helpful lectures. I recommend a different professor.
Dr. Hilty was a decent prof. He cares about his students, and does his best to explain things thoroughly. I went to SI almost every session and was able to get an A. However, his exams don't always match his mock exams, and sometimes I felt unprepared for the material that was on the exam. I got to learn a little about his research, which was cool.
Hilty goes through lecture with examples and explains just enough to get you started on the homework. Do all the homework and go to class for clicker question points! Mindtap quizzes weekly and 3 exams plus the final. I found SI sessions the most helpful. He's so into chemistry and cracks some jokes. There are better profs but he's a solid choice.
Hilty is not a great lecturer for a beginning chemistry class. He skips over a lot of the super basics that you need in your first intro chem class. I had AP credit coming in with a pretty good knowledge of chemistry and that is how I barely got by in this class. If you are not good at chemistry or haven't had AP before DON'T TAKE HIM.
Don't get me wrong, Professor Hilty seems like a very nice and sweet man. His lectures are not very engaging though, which made it hard to pay attention. Practice problems in class are similar to test questions. Class is clicker question heavy too, so you have to pay attention in class.
Sweetest man ever, and everything is curved in his class. However, that's not where my problem lies. He is used to teaching higher level classes, so taking him for an intro really sucked. He forgets that the students are not advanced and skips over the basic learning objectives. Really heavy hw load, tests don't match review, clicker questions.
Hilty is the sweetest professor ever! Super nice and will listen to feedback or questions during lectures! The only thing I would say is that he skims over topics in lectures and test questions "dive deep". I'd recommend taking notes from the textbook and his lecture to pass. Overall, not the best lectures but probably the kindest chem proff!
Professor Hilty is a very smart guy who does not know how to teach the material. Chemistry is a very hard concept but professor Hilty only made it really hard to understand. He would curve his exams generously because the average was often pretty low. This is what happens when professors prioritize their research labs over their actual classes.
He is a nice guy and his lectures are alright. He isn't the most eloquent speaker and often rambles so its easy to get distracted or confused. The class was pretty mediocre, but the TA was cool.
Dr. Hilty struggles with engaging his students. He is very smart and nice, but he has the tendency to ramble and often times stutters. In the lectures, some pieces of info needed for the HW is skipped over or not explained in enough detail. If you take him, get a tutor ASAP.
Dr. Hilty is a fairly average professor. Classes consist of him reading off of slides, doing a few examples, and asking a few Reef Clicker questions (which is why I say attendance is mandatory). The tests tend to have fairly generous curves. He is very reliable in posting slides, videos, and practice tests. There are ALEKS homework Mon, Wed, Fri.
Dr. Hilty is so nice, however his lectures are boring, he reads off the slides then works through practice problems and polling questions. Watch his lecture videos before class to help grasp the concept better. ALEKS is annoying and takes time to do. His test reviews are extremely similar to the test and he curves very generously. Solid choice
I hated this class I came in with little to no knowledge and he fully went straight in. He never fully taught the material well. So I seemed outside tutoring.
Cares about his student's success. Fair grader, but understanding.
Dr. Hilty is a very kind person but his class was not my favorite. I had to seek a lot of outside help to understand concepts that I felt he did not go through enough. The tests are just like the test reviews but the tests and test reviews are nothing like the day-to-day work. If you're like me, Aleks hw is annoying but it will help you learn.
Dr. Hilty is a great choice for CHEM 119! Although I was not really good at Chemistry he curves his exams and if you complete the homework assigned and do well in lab it is very easy to get a B or better.
Dr. Hilty is a better professor than he gets credit for. He knows what he's talking about and although his lectures aren't the most interesting, they get the job done. There is ALEKS homework due every week and clicker questions in class, but he doesn't assign excessive work . His tests are manageable and he posts practice questions before them.
Dr. Hilty was my favorite professor this year. He is so nice and really goes out of his way to make extra videos explaining tough concepts. A lot of people dont like him, but they dont even bother looking at the extra content he provides. If you pay attention and do the homework, youll do just fine, and youll have a sweet, funny professor.
Dr. Hilty really to be a good prof but it can be very hard to understand him in lecture and not get bored. That being said, understanding the practice exams he gives are how you'll get an A. My only studying from this class came from doing the practice exams until I got a 100 (you can take them multiple times, they aren't for a grade).
I loved having professor hilty as my chem 119 instructor. He does require aleks which can be very over loading at times when you have other classes home works due. He curves very generously.
Do not listen to the ratings!!! If you study hard, watch the lectures, go to Si sessions, and do the test reviews you will pass! Dr. Hilty is an incredible professor and if you pay attention in class you will understand the concepts. On top of all that he curves the test heavily, so do not stress. TAKE this professor you will not regret it.
Prof. Hilty is a great professor!! He is very knowledgable and cares about his students a lot. If you work hard, do the homework, and do the practice problems, you will do great in the class! I 100% recommend him as your Intro to Chem professor! You will learn a lot!
Dr. Hilty is a great professor! He gives generous curves on tests and provides great practice problems. He uses ALEKS, which can be a pain but you have to get it done. He also has clicker questions during lectures for attendance so definitely go to class, ask questions, and do the problems. He is a solid choice if you have previous knowledge.
Great professor! He is so sweet and loves to help his students. Practice questions given before the test are super helpful so make sure to do them. Clicker questions and ALEKS can get annoying but make sure to do them since they make up a lot of your grade.
Of all the profs to take Chem from at A&M, Hilty is not the worst, but he's not great either. Labs are easy but time-consuming. ALEKS is assigned several times throughout the week and is frustrating and time-consuming, but don't get behind. Lecture videos are well explained, but he can overexplain in class. I wouldn't recommend for your first chem.
I passed this class with a B, so it wasnt that bad. Just make sure you do the homework with 100% completion and go to SI sessions. Hilty does care about his students passing, and he added a curve to every exam we took, just make sure you study the material throughly.
It could be that Dr. Hilty is better in person, but if you are taking chemistry online I wouldn't recommend him. Really only take him if you need someone to read the slides to you because that's basically what his lectures were. If you do take his class, basically just understand the problems on his practice tests and you will do fine on the exams.
His test are hard, but if you do the practice exams youll pass. Theres HW 3 days a week, and they can take awhile but they help. His lectures are a boring, but he demonstrates all the problems well, and hes always willing to help.
Dr. Hilty is a very nice professor and he curved our Exams. I struggled with the tests in this class but I still ended with a B. Lots of Homework but I didnt mind because it helped me learn. Practice tests are very similar to the real tests.
This class requires a lot of outside prep. You won't be able to get away with showing up to lecture with no studying beforehand. He posted lecture videos extremely late, sometimes even after midnight (of the day that the video was expected to be watched on). His class is doable, but you will need to be ready to put in more time than you expect.
easiest class I took freshmen year. i fell asleep every single lecture and never once studies for an assessment and made all As. he is kinda slow in his lectures and has a hard time answering questions, but most people understand the material easily.
He teaches complicated parts of lectures before giving us the background information. Isnt open to extra credit/grade help at all. Doesnt teach in depth. If you didnt take chemistry your senior year of high school dont sign up for his class
He uses powerpoints to give his lectures in class that offer almost no explanation of concepts, and make it difficult to predict the depth of what you will need to know. Lectures too slowly, so he is often piling topics needed for a quiz/test at the last second. If you didn't take AP chem in high school, this class is extremely difficult.
aleks sucks but it's better than owl. sweet man and is passionate about what he does but he is just teaching a hard class. does iclicker questions but if you get a 70% on them, you get all the points. curves the tests like 10+ points.
His lectures are hard to understand and he doesn't explain things well. Examples questions given in lecture are not helpful, they don't prepare you for hw/quiz/test questions. He makes an already hard class much harder, especially for people who didn't take AP chem in high school
I don't understand anything he talked about during his lecture, but you have to attend them for a grade. He also talks very quietly so if you don't sit on the right side of the room you can't even hear him. Also doesn't explain concepts or problems well if you don't understand them the first time he explains them. He'll just repeat what he said.
His lectures are very slow, so he is always having to cram content right before a quiz or exam. No partial credit on quizzes or exams makes it difficult to do well on them. If you haven't taken AP chem and take Hilty, all I can say is good luck or find someone else who teaches and answers questions more efficiently and clearly.
I am not one to bash on professors, but do not take Hilty. He does not teach well, I did not take chem in highschool nor did my friends and we hardly ever knew what was going on in class, he does not give many practice problems and the ones he does are clicker questions. You can barely understand him and his writing is illegible. This class sucked.
I try to give teachers the benefit of the doubt, but Hilty simply does not teach well at all. Lots of stuttering and very bad at explaining important course materials. Most of the learning is on your own and youll have a very difficult time without a heavy background in chem.
Hilty wasn't the best lecturer. His explanations can often be very vague, but he does answer questions rather well. Online homework must be purchased and it is always so tedious and time consuming. Bi-weekly quizzes can be a real pain. Attendance is taken via a poll, which you, also have to be to receive access to.
Dr. Hilty is such a nice guy. He clearly wants to help but he goes incredibly slow and is hard to understand. He does not lead or guide towards what will be on quizzes and exams, and his sections had much worse averages than others on quizzes. He lets crowd noise affect him a ton which makes class hard to pay attention in.
Overall average+ professor. He is VERY knowledgeable, but does not always do the best job communicating new topics, jumping straight into the minor details before the base concepts. This class is hard, but an A is definitely doable if you take time to study outside of class. Go to lecture, take notes, then go study individually.
Probs 2 stars but wanted to lower the average. The study materials are unviewable unless you attend the SI sessions, his lectures are awful and you leave with hardly any new knowledge, instead its more like heres what youre supposed to learn, go learn it. Quizzes are unforgiving, dont listen to people saying he curves, he doesnt.
Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had, you need to teach yourself everything, Dr. Hilty is not a good lecturer and the slides that he uses to teach are of little to no use. The quizzes are very difficult and you don't know what to expect on them because the lectures in class are so vague. Please do not take Hilty for Chem
His lectures are uninformative. He switches between slides too quickly for me to both take notes and comprehend them. I usually ended up learning more from the online homework ($ub$cription!) explanations than from in class. At least he dropped our lowest quiz grade. I wish I'd taken someone else.
Dr. Hilty is a great human and knowledgeable in chemistry, but he is a terrible teacher. Most lectures you sit there and wonder what is going on. Most of the class is deriving equations. There is no structure in this class, and most times we dont cover half of the slides. Quizzes are impossible and worth a large portion of your grade.
Dr. Hilty seems like a very knowledgeable and passionate professor when it comes to chemistry. With that being said, he lacks the ability to effectively communicate information to students, especially students who are fairly new to chem. If youve taken AP chem in HS, then the class wont be too big of a problem, but if you havent, good luck.
You can tell he is nice and cares about his students, but he is AWFUL at teaching. He stutters constantly, lectures are very slow and confusing, and he does not cover what is on the quizzes/exams. Almost all of your learning is done on your own, and he is terrible at explaining concepts. Find another prof for CHEM107 if you can.
Dr. Hilty is no doubt a professor that cares, but if you are able to choose another professor you should do so. He is very knowledgeable in what he does and teaches but he has no idea on how to explain himself. He is a slow lecturer as well and doesn't tell you what will be on exams/quizzes. There is also no extra credit or curve in this class.
Hilty does not have very good lecture skills. He is unable to control the class and he rambles on and on about irrelevant bits of information. I got an A in this class merely on my high school AP Chemistry knowledge.
Dr. Hilty is tough to listen to in class, but he does care about his students. I had very limited chemistry knowledge coming into this class. The assessments are tough because they are online & have no partial credit. However, I received an A on the final exam after studying 30 hours, & he rounded my class grade to an A. He appreciates hard work.
Smart Guy, terrible teacher. The only learning opportunity was the homework, lectures were completely useless but daily questions meant you had to go. Seems to care about students but that only goes so far when he cant teach in general.
His lectures were very slow and didn't explain things. I learned outside of class by doing the homework problems. You never knew how to prepare for quizzes/tests because lectures were incomplete. He's a nice guy but avoid if possible.
Absolutely incredible human being, but a lot of homework, quizzes/exams make up majority of the grade with no partial credit, and it's hard to gage what you need to know for the quizzes/exams so you end up needing to study a lot.
Dr. Hilty is a very nice guy and he is very knowledgeable but he is not the best lecturer. Chemistry 107 is a hard class, and there is no way to get around that. Most of the learning came from the homework for me because the lectures were not very clear. This class is definitely doable but it requires a lot of work.
Doctor Hilty is a really nice guy, but he just wasn't a great lecturer. If you struggled with chemistry in high school, I wouldn't recommend taking him, but if you did well in AP chem then you'll probably be fine. The second half of the class is much harder than the first so watch out for the quizzes.
Hilty was a nice professor, but his lectures were hard to follow. I didn't take AP Chem so as a first-time Chem student this class was hard. S.I. sessions were the only way that I understood the course.
He was a cool dude but his class was hella difficult. The lectures had little to nothing to do with the tests and quizzes and were purely theoretical.
Terrible in lectures. Doesn't explain concepts well and flies through lectures. A good TA will make or break your grade.
I am taking this class and am not grasping any of the concepts. He is great if you're good with thick accents and ok with high pressure of tests. 1/5
Hilty is very hard to understand and often rambles about non-related topics during lectures. He talks very fats and doesn't explain iClicker questions. The quizzes and tests are alright if you study, because the lectures don't help much.
Dr. Hilty cares for your success. There are countless resources to help you succeed. Go to the lectures and MAKE SURE you go to the review sessions and watch his videos on hard concepts. Gave like 30 points of extra credit so far. Don't expect an easy A, as that mindset is very dangerous going into his course. The workload is fair. Ask questions!!!
horrible lectures, but class would randomly start clapping a few times every class so it was really fun lol.
I think Hilty gets too much criticism. He covers all of the content in lectures, but he doesn't really cover examples that are on the tests/quizzes. The TA review sessions are good for that. Really nice guy, and will do his best to help you if you come to him with questions. People who think he's bad clearly haven't had terrible teachers before.
Professor Hilty is a terrible teacher, don't get me wrong. His class does not help explain the concepts learned in this class, and I'm always left confused after his lectures. He is very nice, however. He gave me like two extensions on a quiz after I lost a family member, which was greatly appreciated.
Avoid Dr.Hilty. He fails at engaging the class, does not thoroughly explain difficult concepts, and quizzes often include material that is not presented or elaborated on in the lecture. His quiz average is always below 80 and does not curve any tests or quizzes. As someone who loves chemistry, he has assisted me in hating this subject now. AVOID!
He explains barely anything and he is bad at lecturing. He makes me despise chemistry. The class is way too hard for his teaching skills. Don't take.
Christian Hilty was a horrible teacher. He likes to ramble on about chem related topics that are not related to the class which just confuses most students. I completely relied on tutoring to get me a B, the teacher didn't teach me anything. I don't wish anybody to have him as a teacher. I am very studious and did good in other classes.
Hilty is very lecture heavy and his lectures are also very had to follow. He will sometimes go on a tangent about what he is talking about and sometimes doesn't explain things very clearly. However, he does post his lectures online and has review sessions which are very helpful. His grading is also relatively easy. Take if you can learn yourself.
If you can avoid Hilty, do it. He is a smart guy, but not meant to teach intro chem. He overcomplicates it heavily. I ended up not going to lectures any more and suffered a bad attendance grade because it became pointless to go to his lectures. He constantly explains simple things in a much more difficult manner and confuses a lot of the students.
Hilty is really hard to understand and his lectures are very unclear. He will take 5 seconds to explain the concept and then spend 20 minutes asking us to do iClicker questions without explaining the answers at the end. The quizzes are difficult, but if you get a good SI it helps.
This is my first ever rate because this class was by far the hardest class I've taken in my life, I'm not good at chemistry, and professor Hilty made it even more difficult. Lectures and HWs are okay, but quizzes and exams were the hardest part of the course, quizzes were way harder than what we saw on the lecture, choose another professor!
Very string accent. Knows a lot. Has a hard time conveying his knowledge
Hilty is one of the worst profs I have every had.He is smart but his lectures are useless(But he takes participation grades), he doesn't explain where he is getting things or why he is doing things with certain variables Tutoring and his TA's review videos carried me through the year, and are the only reasons that I am not going to fail this class.
He gets too much criticism. Even though his accent may be hard to understand, if you don't zone out of his lectures, you will do well because he goes in depth and i believe that everyone just zones out of his lectures because of his hard accent. Also his homework helps greatly!
Hilty barely explains what he's doing and why he's doing it. I'm already not good at chem, and Hilty doesn't really make it better. The quizzes barely line up with what's on the homework and lectures, so you can definitely lose a lot of points there.
Dr. Hility is not a bad professor imo and his accent isn't hard to understand. His lectures are very long and honestly boring at times especially since he goes into specific details. The only way you will get an A is if you do the clickers, do the review sessions, watch chem videos and do khan academy problems, and do the owl homework.
Dr Hilty is a nice guy and genuinely cares about his students. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and he teaches the concepts well. The quizzes can be sometimes difficult, but he gives plenty of extra credit and the TA review sessions were very helpful.
He was a great teacher for 107. All it takes is paying attention and reviewing after to do well in his class.
Nice guy, but awful teacher. He makes the lectures as unclear as humanly possible. He overexplains massively. Attendance is needed due to iclicker questions and the fact that the lectures slides are very unclear. Highly do not recommend. Has a very profound stutter and accent.
I actually enjoyed taking chem with Dr. Hilty. Our class genuinely cared about him because of his kind nature and his ability to joke with the class. He also has a good lecture pace that is easy to keep up with. Most professors don't care about CHEM 107, but it always felt like Dr. Hilty truly cared about us and wanted the best for us.
Hilty is one of the worst profs I had. He is smart but his lectures are useless(But he takes participation grades), he doesn't explain where he is getting things. His Tutoring, TA's review videos, and Extra credit carried me through the year, and are the only reasons that I am not going to fail this class.
Prof Hilty is such a nice man, very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed getting to know him. However, he is not a skilled teacher and struggles to control the class. There is mandatory online homework, the IClicker app for attendance and in-class questions, and biweekly quizzes and two exams. If you struggle with chem he is probably not for you.
the prof seems so nice but its so hard to understand what he's trying to teach and what he's saying
Knows his stuff but is a very poor lecturer. If you know the content you are fine but otherwise you are screwed. Take someone else.
Dr. Hilty himself is nice person, but he doesn't explain things very well. His lectures move at a steady pace but the content itself is complicated and he doesn't make it any more clear. The exams and quizzes weigh extremely heavy on your grade, so study best you can because messing up badly for even one quiz could be catastrophic for your grade.
This class is hard but Hilty makes it worse, his lecture are absolutely useless and the book is even more confusing. He also grades very different between people and gives little to no partial credit. On a good note exam reviews were similar to the exams.
Professor Hilty is a nice guy, but his lectures can be difficult to follow. Staying on top of the material and using resources like unstuck ai alongside the textbook is key to succeeding in this class.
Take anyone else. Homework is completion. 3 exams + final. He has a heavy accent and doesn't teach material well. I-clicker participation questions each class, you must attend. Textbook isn't even that helpful. Terrible class. Hard content and even harder professor.
Lectures are very boring and don't really make sense. I recommend reviewing the homework solutions (which are completion grades btw) and the test review slides he gives in order to prep for exams. iClicker is used for class participation.
Awful at lectures, awful at teaching, and the exams were all failing (around a flat 50) for our class. Huge curve saved my life (usually 20-30 points of curve) and despite not learning a single thing from this class I did enjoy how the exams were literally just 50 minutes of me role playing as a physicist.
I know nothing about pchem and with the way he teaches, you would think he also knows nothing.
He makes his exams pretty easy, and the class isn't hard if you study and go to class. I liked his lectures and thought he explained it pretty well. He offers help sessions if you have questions and he's very nice.
guy below me doesn't know what he's talking about or is the alleged relative he had in his class. worst professor i've ever taken and genuinely never seen so many people confused about a class in my life. if you take this man good luck.
you can tell he's a nice guy irl but as a professor he's just not very good at his job. avoid at all costs if you can, his exams were insane and only 20% matched up to actual class problems and slides. the rest is random stuff he pulled out of his own phd level brain
How do you get a job as a professor at tamu and what are the qualifications needed because I'm trying to understand how a professor so bad at teaching and making exams somehow came to be teaching one of the hardest courses in my degree plan
I truly do not think studying or not studying will make a difference on any of the exams you take. Avoid at all costs if possible. Not worth the gpa drop.
not worth taking. please avoid if possible. i have never taken a more nauseating class in my life
This guy does not care about the fact our exam averages were consistently in the low 50s. Our final average was a 43. Clearly nobody learned anything from this class unless they also had no life outside of class. Curves heavy but truthfully, not worth your time taking. Go actually learn w someone else
Absolute horrible professor, and is extremely unhelpful. Classes make no sense, and is pointless to study for exams. Best lecture of the semester was one with a substitute professor, who is known for not being great, yet infinitely better than Hilty. Avoid at all costs. I cannot write here words that can describe how much I dislike this professor.
Most of these reviews paint Dr. Hilty as the key contributor to their low scores when in reality, their own lack of motivation and self-discipline is their GPA's worst enemy. 20% of the grade is participation (homeworks and iClicker). Exams are much easier than homeworks. Hilty also provides practice problems that really prepare you for the exams.
Dr. Hilty spends half of the lecture rambling about random topics and doesn't explain them clearly. The homework's are useless for understanding the concepts. He is a tough exam grader and doesn't give much partial credit.
People need to take charge of their learning. This class was an introduction to the subject and could have been much more intensive. Studying does make a difference as you must understand concepts; most exams were "plug&chug," except for a few questions needing deeper thought. Homework and reviews are KEY. Dr. Hilty was not the problem.
He wasn't really interesting and skim through many of the important topics. Homework didn't help at all and found them useless for the exams.
Anyone who says it's a discipline thing and not a prof thing, is trolling you. the homework and slides are maybe 20% of the content on the real exam and I can confidently say I knew the material on those well and yet it just didn't matter. You won't fail this class because of the curve but you won't have fun.
Dr. Hilty is a decent professor, though lectures can be hard to follow. His help sessions and office hours are very helpful, exams are mostly calculation-based with a cheat sheet allowed, and I scored above a 90 even without the curve. He also encourages questions and is always willing to help.
