He really does try to help you understand the material, his Earth and Environmental Systems Podcast is a big help.
Pretty cool guy. Very helpful and interesting.
Interesting, seems to really like the class, explained things well
easy class
Great teacher. Always chimes in on the discussion board and the podcasts are extremely helpful, but not a substitute for going to class.
A good professor, kept class entertaining and knowing what he was talking about.
All tests are copied from a list of questions he gives you throughout the semester.
Great lecturer. Test material was clearly presented. Addressed relevant topics in lecture and kept it interesting.
Fun teacher, easy to listen to. Tests extremely easy, as they're based directly off notes he practically gives you throughout semester
Shorey was a bit biased in a few lectures but presented sound science. Tests directly form notes. Lab a bit irritating and taught by grad students. However, my TA was helpful. Study the old tests and get help from the TA on the big point projects and this will be a pretty easy A.
Cool dude.
Awesome teach. All claims were backed by hard science and he's very enthusiastic about what he teaches
This man loves what he teaches and the passion is contagious. In my stressful hell known as a day at the school of Mines, his lectures were my favorite part. You rock, Shorey! (no pun intended)
Great teacher who is passionate and innovative(podcasts all his lectures)
He is very helpful
Great teacher in class & out. Willing to thoroughly answer any crazy ? I thought up during OH. VERY biased in his views, though, & makes it clear that he thinks those who don't agree with him are stupid. That said, he doesn't bias his grading on whether you agree with him, and he's definitely willing to respectfully discuss other views in OH.
Awesome professor, very enthusiastic about material and helping students learn.
Very passionate, if not a little biased. Sets you up to succeed with all his lectures available as podcasts and online slides. He even gives you 'objectives' that are essentially test questions. The labs are a bit confusing, especially with a bad TA, but an easy A class!
Dr. Shorey is a great teacher. He has objectives and tells you all of the answers to them in class and then tests you on them directly. It is an easy course if you study the objectives well, and he's a very helpful teacher in his lectures and after class.
Dr. Shorey is an awesome teacher. You can tell he really loves teaching and loves earth science. He gives you all the answers to the tests in class and his tests are super easy if you study the practice exam.
What a great professor! Coming to class regularly can be difficult with no mandatory attendance, but it is well worth it. He has a genuine interest in the class and it definitely shows. The class itself is easy if you study the objectives given out. Wouldn't recommend anyone else to teach this class!
His lectures are very helpful and pertinent to what is on the test. He tells you exactly what you need to know by handing out Objectives, or the major points of each lecture. He responds quickly to e-mails and is easy to work with because he wants his students to understand the material, succeed, and have fun in his class.
Shorey is the best!!!!
Great teacher! helpful, knowledgeable, makes material I have otherwise no interest in interesting.
Great Professor. Highly reccomended. Expert on the material and provides a very student-friendly class. Objectives are tested directly
As long as you show up and pay attention you will pass. He's very clear about what will be on tests and he makes them pretty easy. He really knows how to make a lecture interesting, and he will reward you if you pay attention with hints about what free-response questions will be on the test. His lectures are my favorite lectures.
Shorey makes this class pretty easy. He actually responds to student emails. You can tell he's really into what he does. He pretty much tells you what's gonna be on the fill-in-the-blank and he tells you exactly what you'll be tested over, although you get tested on a small fraction of what you're expected to know. Great class!
He's a well knowledgeable professor you will learn a lot from him. I didn't like geology at first but after I had a course with him it became my favorite. You're lucky if he is your professor. He has enough experience to make you a great geologist, you just need to focus on lectures.
Worst Professor I have ever had.
Dr. Shorey is easily one of the most knowledgeable professors at Mines. His lectures are crystal clear, very interesting, and inspiring. If you show up to class, you won't be disappointed as he uses clicker questions to your advantage and gives hints about exams. Overall, his classes are very rewarding and he is a great educator
Its rumored that if you chant "Geology" three times Shorey will appear to help you in times of academic need. Joking aside, Shorey's extensive background knowledge and amazing lectures made Earth and Environmental an extraordinary class.
Professor Shorey's passion for what he does is contagious. I look forward to his lectures every morning.
Shorey is a great lecturer who tells great and captivating stories that he teaches by.
Shorey is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about all of the subjects he teaches. Earth and Environmental Systems encompasses a variety of sciences from geology and hydrology to meteorology and ecology. I wish this class was mandatory for every student. It will expand your worldview and change your perspective on various societal issues.
Shorey loves his job and really has a passion for what he does. He is very knowledgeable on the content he teaches, and every lecture is interesting and new.
He gives great lectures and is very nice and passionate about what he's talking about. The tests and objectives are all online, but going to lectures is definitely worth it as he will make you see the world differently.
Has clear objectives, must go to class to get the information, but once you have it the class is easy. He makes a few politically charged comments here and there.
Dr. Shorey is AMAZING. That's really all there is to it. All you have to do is go to his lectures and you will understand how incredible his class is. He's passionate about the material and knows almost everything and anything related to Earth Science. Everyone has there moments, but overall Shorey is the best professor I have ever had.
Having some trouble? His podcasts and videos are enough to get you the grade you want. Tests are mostly questions from the old exams that he posts and the objectives.
Shorey is a very enthusiastic professor! He is excited to teach and help students learn. His passion what he does is very evident in his lectures. Outdoor field trips and labs give students a chance to be hands-on and interact with the environment. He is also hilarious!
Classes were very repetitive and hard to pay attention in. Shorey is very intelligent and knowledgeable. Don't forget your iClicker. Could've gotten an A if it wasn't for lab. My section magnaged to get the hardest grader for a TA. Had friends who tried less than me on lab reports and did better. You get an incomplete in the class if you miss lab.
Shorey is by far the best professor for Earth and Environmental Systems. He is very passionate about geology, and the objectives he creates to go alongside the lectures make it very clear what will be on exams. If you attend lecture, you will have a great understanding of what is expected on tests. Don't forget your iClicker!
I have to be honest I was expecting Shorey to be a better professor than I experienced. He's not terrible and definitely more likeable by some people more than others. He comes across with a very big head and if you are looking for help, he was good at not giving the best explanation. Was harder than I thought to get the grade I wanted.
Dr. Shorey is a respectable teacher. He's one of the more outgoing and personable professors at Mines, which is refreshing. He clearly knows his stuff and sometimes comes off as a "know it all", but it's honestly not problem when it comes to his effectiveness as a professor. His lectures are straightforward, and is an easy A if you read his slides.
If there are two words that can be combined into a singular description for the brief interaction with this arrogant jerk itd be arrogantjerk
Dr. Shorey was awesome and the labs are the only thing that you'll really have for hw.
Just a solid passionate teacher, he expects respect and it is totally justified.
Professor Shorey was an amazing professor. You can tell he loves geology. makes his lectures fun and educational.
Asked to attend the Colorado Scientific Society lecture on the Snowmastodon site by my professor. I cannot believe how bad the talk was. No science was discussed and it was so boring watching the poor quality video and discussion of the dig day- by-day. He is a narcissist and should not be giving scientific talks on such amazing paleo findings.
Shorey is epic. He made my first semester at Mines *loads* better. He's super knowledgeable, very enjoyable, and an all around cool dude. Make sure you attend lectures and bring your clicker (and answer all the questions as best you can). Would take him again in a heartbeat.
SHOREY IS AMAZING! Easily one of the most knowledgeable individuals I've ever met in the field of environmentalism and geology. He is beyond passionate about the Earth and is absolutely hilarious both in his written assignments, workbooks, and in person. I would absolutely recommend taking one of his classes if possible.
Shorey is awesome, he's so passionate about what he does and his lectures are fascinating, honestly I would attend just for fun. Tests and quizzes are easy. Only downside are the labs, they are very meticulous and take forever. But he is such an interesting lecturer that it's definitely worth it. Would take again.
Rude, condescending, doesn't care about his students at all. If you miss a lecture, there is no way to find what you missed other than finding unofficial quizlets or asking friends. The grading criteria aren't clear either. IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS AND ASK HIM ABOUT THE GRADING CRITERIA ASAP. Else, you'll be sorely surprised
All of his teachings are verbal. If you're an auditory learner, this is good so long as you write everything down, because it's not on his slides or syllabus. If you don't, you're screwed, and if you ask him a question, he talks at you like you're the dumbest person in the entire world. Very rude.
no clear grading criteria. his syllabus doesn't have anything helpful in it.
Shorey is a fine teacher when you're in his lectures. it takes a day or two to get used to and then you get it from there. The reason he gets a 1 star is for how he doesn't represent mines at all. he's inaccessible, unhelpful, rude, and doesn't care about his students. his grading makes no sense, and he doesn't tell you about it til finals week.
This class makes me so angry. The way he treats his students is unacceptable, and rude.
If you don't write something down the one, single time he says it, you'll miss an important part of class. His grading policy makes no sense, and the way he treats his students is absolutely awful.
I emailed him asking where the final exam room was, and he told me to go to class. I couldn't go to class that day.
his example exams are super close to the real ones, the problem is he doesn't make it clear that the ONLY official grade you get for lecture ( which is 75% of your grade) is from exams. On the syllabus, it says quizzes are also taken into account... but surprise they are not so you have to ace the exams to get a good grade in the class.
Professor Shorey is so passionate about what he does and it's definitely contagious. He's a great teacher and offers very clear criteria for grading and tests. The class was lecture heavy, but he always kept my attention. Lab was fun as well and I feel like I learned a lot about the world.
Shorey is an amazing teacher and person as he literally gives you a sheet with all the questions you need to answer during lecture and as long as you study those, you’ll do great in the exams, just so you know the only grades come from the exams
Shorey is a really good professor; he's funny, passionate about his job, and somewhat entertaining. His GEGN101 class is really all about memorization for the exams, so getting a decent grade in that class isn't super challenging. Make sure to pay attention to what he say's though, because he may call you out for asking a "stupid" question.
This man was my favorite professor at Mines during my Freshman Year. He's very lecture heavy, yes, but he's not nearly as tough or hard-to-please as others have stated. Maybe he was different in the past, but almost all of his information could be found in the lecture slides, and his notes ask the questions that will most likely be on exams.
I liked Dr. Shorey a lot. He made the content interesting. He obviously cared about the content and my understanding of it. I would've liked to have taken a course from him again.
I took Dr. Shorey's class a year ago and still remember it very fondly. He is an amazing professor with super engaging lectures. The only class I actually wanted to go to. You also very much need to go to class, his exams are over a list of objectives that he talks about in class but may not be on the posted slides.
Ignore all the negative reviews of Shorey, it looks like almost all of them were during the online span of covid. Shorey is very engaging in his lectures and the tests are pretty easy since he tells you exactly what you need to remember. As long as you go to class and somewhat pay attention, it's an easy A.
Although you may learn a lot in his class, he isn't very nice to students. On multiple occasions he was very passive aggressive towards me when I was asking for help. He once told me, "If you knew how to do math, you could easily calculate your grade." His grading policy was never clearly in the syllabus. Take any other prof that teaches this class
Super cool guy. Very friendly and very very passionate about what he is teaching. He does go off on tangents that have little to nothing to do with the actual required material, but besides that he is great. Also, there's an opportunity for extra credit on all the labs and the final is optional. Tests are also pretty easy,
Shorey is a brilliant guy who really knows his stuff, but he does not communicate well, including to his TAs. He inserts personal political viewpoints in class and belittles students who challenge him. He has an unclear and abnormal grading scheme with a holier-than-thou attitude when confronted about it. He does not make useful information clear.
Dr. Shorey has the least clear grading policy I have ever seen in a class. He adds his personal political opinions in class and denounces Christianity every chance he gets. He has an attitude as if he could never be wrong and he is extremely unhelpful when asked questions. He does not seem to care at all about his students.
If you're passionate about geology, Shorey is the professor to take. He's knowledgeable and progressive, especially about the climate crisis and evolution, and is very entertaining during lecture and field trips. A bit intimidating in person, but wants the best possible course he can provide.
He is knowledgeable and really expects you to think. While many others have posted how he "talks down to you", I believe that he wants you to question things but wants to guide you to approach it in a logical way. Honestly amazing!
Incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. Lab attendance is mandatory. Learning objectives from lectures constitute the exams and quizzes. The "political" comments others mentioned are opinion polls on evolution, climate change, etc. IMO he's respectful of different viewpoints but has a dry/sarcastic humor that people may take offense to.
Great sense of humor and very passionate about his subject matter
Amazing professor! Great lectures, very funny and passionate. Coursework is easy and effective. Very clear objectives. Highly recommend.
Shorey is one of the best professors on campus, you'll be glad to have him for at least GEGN 101. While the class itself is formatted oddly, with no real HW's and quiz style 53 question exams, Shorey does an amazing job making these parts of the class since he clearly notes what will be on the Exams with "objectives". Be sure to do the extra credit
His grading scheme is so confusing to me, I literally have no clue how it works, but I got an A in the class so it all worked out. He is super nice and gives awesome lectures.
Dr. Shorey was an amazing professor. The class is lecture heavy with minimal homework. He takes attendance but uses it as a grade booster. The tests were multiple choice and based on the note objectives. The lab field trips were quite interesting and enjoyable. Dr. Shorey is very passionate and well knowledgeable. Extra credit is offered many times
His lectures are hard to follow regarding what is important to know for upcoming exams. He is the only GEGN 101 professor that gives exams. When asked for a practice exam, he posted exams from 6 years ago, which were no longer relevant and he also refused to post a key with the right answers and responds with "the key is your notes"
Chris Shorey has an amazing passion for geology. One of the hardest professors who grades but makes the experience really enjoyable for class and field trips!
Shorey is funny and his lectures are great, there would be days where I would skip all classes but GEGN just to go to lecture and hear him talk passionately about the topic and his jokes. Obviously very knowledgeable and extremely passionate about everything he teaches.
I am pretty sure this is one of the first semesters he is teaching this course but he did a great job. He is passionate and knowledgeable and has great lectures. The lectures often go too fast to take notes but he posts them afterwards and honestly you don't super need to take notes. Not the most organized course but I learned a ton.
I LOVED Shorey! Granted, geo is my major, but his passion for his subject made it so enjoyable. Test MCQs come from objectives and he often tells you the FRQs in advance. All slides were available on Canvas before class. He held a zoom class Thanksgiving week in case students had left and he dropped the lowest test so I didn't take the final.
