Great professor - if you're interested in history, you'll love taking his class. He has a great sense of humor and loves telling historical anecdotes. His tests can be tough, but if you actually put forth effort and read the assigned materials, getting an "A" is no problem at all. Recommended.
This is the second class I have taken from this professor and he is fantastic! He is very interesting and knowledgeable in his field. He even has great little stories and impressions of almost every US president! His tests are very fair and homework is avg. (must read the chapters after each lecture it is helpful.) I would HIGHLY recommend him!
He's very knowledgeable about history, and has many amusing anecdotes that help cement significant knowledge. Teaches parallel to the book, but clarifies and deepens concepts. Tests are a good balance of difficulty. Additionally, he does impressions of historical figures that are hilarious and has a great since of humor.
I took his HIST2 class because he looked like a safe choice, but he wasn't very helpful. When he addresses either you or the class, he never looks at you (closes his eyes and raises his eyebrows, or just looks up at ceiling). Be sure to fill your test essays with everything he said, and you'll be VERY lucky to get a B.
Amazing teacher! I took History 1302 from another teacher last semester and had to drop it because it was unclear and the tests were miserable, but this professor is amazing. His tests are VERY fair, and he gives you the option to retake or take an exam late twice. He is really passionate about what he teaches and definitely makes it fun in clas
He just wants all the people who are going to waste his time out of there and fast, so he comes off kinda scary. But he's really funny actuly. My advise take notes, raise your hand, ask, comment. His test aren't hard if you just sit through his lectures. He is a really good teachers! I hate history and I swear he is fair and always entertaining!
Absolutely fantastic professor! Very passionate and very detailed. Reading in this course is a must. Not for slackers. I had him for American History I and was so impressed, I had him for American History II. Brilliant guy.
This teacher is all over the place. His lectures are very fast so pay attention. He never uses the book. When you take your exam for the map of the USA,you need to pass in order to pass the class. If you fail it he will ask you to withdraw.BAD teaching
Teacher is hung up on himself...lectures with eyes closed. His grades essay work like an English teacher. Take class from somone else. Nice guy, but not student friendly. He needs to teach not show what he knows. No movies or slide teaching aids....so be ready for lectures and lots of hard exams. Every test has an essay format.
Exam essays are very rushed. He grades as if it was an assigned polished essay that would normally take a lot of time. On your exam, he changes technically correct word usage and sentences into his voice. I asked my English prof and she said my grammar was correct! Stay away if you are taking for H.S. He doesn't believe you should be in there!
Fist off this professor teaches with his eyes closed, makes it hard to pay attentionto what he is lecturing on. He grades your essays harder then an English teacher does. He does not follow text book at all and his lectures jump all over the place. Stay away if your looking for a grade higher then a C.
I agree with the other bad reviews. Teacher jumps all over the place even gets dates wrong. Very rude did not seem like he wanted to be a teacher at all if you are looking for a good grade in history take it with someone else!!
omg totally nice very helpful and over all best teach ever
If you want to sleep through class and get an A, then do not take him. He's a great teacher, and his lectures are funny if you pay attention but you DO have to pay attention. He notices people that study hard and he'll let you know you're doing it right.
He is a great professor who cares about the material and his students. If you want a good grade in his class you will have to earn it. (helpful note: if you want a good grade on the essays, put a ton of facts and dates, dont worry so much about sentence structure, spelling and such)
Avoid this class and teacher last to fill first to fail cannot support student inquires or issues tells you to drop first day cannot teach college level no eye contact does not care to pass anyone ever Avoid
This professor means well, I know he does but he really comes off rude. His class is very hard, you must attend every class to get an A. My truthful advice it to drop class and make a judgement after the first day you see him. He gives 4 tests, mc and essays. He grades the essays very very hard. Good luck if you do end up taking him, I had to drop.
extremely hard to take and if you have any questions he will refer you to the syllabus for anything except for actual history questions he grades very hard and you need to pay attention in class or read the text book before tests and you still might fail
Mr. Stiehler is very hard to please with the essay portion of the test, but he will work with anyone who tries to pass his best to pass the class. The only other thing I would warn about is his language. Other than that, he is a good history teacher.
WORST teacher ive ever had throughout college! if you want to pass and actually enjoy the class then dont take him! all he cares about is showing how smart he is than helping the students learn and make good grades! He will drop you whenever he wants and grades very hard! whatever you do dont take him
Honestly he's a good professor and the lectures are generally good but he is a very tough grader. He requires complete mastery of names and most of all dates. He is a stickler for dates and if you only include 3-4 he will rip you up on your essay. Multiple choice is easy and lectures cover everything so dont skip class and take very vigorous notes
Really helpful if you attend class and are respectful.
He isn't a fantastic teacher, he talks at you for two hours straight, and expects you to get it completely. He's always looking anywhere but in your eyes. He always says "refer to the syllabus" even when the question is nothing related to the syllabus.
Teaches with his eyes closed, goes off on many rants, does not care to help students understand the lecture, and is honestly the rudest professor I've ever had.
he just stands there and talks, wont answer questions during class, will refer you to 50 page syllabus for anything
Professor Stiehler was an fun lecturer who really seemed to care about the material and those students who worked hard. Gives learning objectives that completely prepare you for the test, which means attendance isn't necessary. Despite this, attendance is encouraged and recommended as his lectures were interesting and fun.
Professor Stiehler made history interesting. He's very knowledgeable in his subject area and you can tell he is passionate about history. If you pay attention during lectures, use the study material he hands out, and put in a little effort, an A is quite possible. He tells you what he expects and makes it possible. Enjoyed class a lot.
Professor Stiehler is able to communicate the material well, and I genuinely learned a lot in his class. That said, the only grades were 4 tests, and while the multiple choice is easy if you've done the reading, he is very very critical while grading essays (which you need to write in order to get higher than a C). Not an easy course at all.
Professor Stiehler's course is challenging. He talks for the entire class time. Exams are divided into 2 parts, 1) 25 multiple choice questions that he pulls from the learning objectives 2) in-class essay. He has very great expectations for the essays. Follow requirements on the syllabus. Attendance and office hours visits make a difference.
Very lecture heavy class, sometimes gets off topic or talks too long on one particular thing and gets behind schedule. Tests are the only grade, muliple choice is easy if you study the learning objectives and the essay portion graded harsh. He clearly loves what he teaches, pay attention and work hard for what you want.
Very intense classes with lectures, started the first day of class by telling us that we were all going to fail the first exam. He is not a very confidence boosting teacher, doesn't seem to care if we pass his class. Lectures get very off topic and always last too long. He never gives time for students to feel like they can ask questions if needed.
This professor is extremely honest from day one, if you are not willing to work hard you will fail. But if you've never had interest in History, this is the professor that will make you love it. He's intense but very helpful, you'll be happy when you pass and actually retain the information you learn. I wish I could take him every year.
To summarize: He went through transcripts from past classes to chastise the students, accused students of cheating w/o proof, had students write IN CLASS essays that he nit picked grammar and style, told students, including african american students, that "english was their second language."He choose not to teach the books chapters about slavery.
A very lecture heavy class. He often talks for a long time and gets very off-topic. He doesn't tolerate talking at all and will call you out in a heartbeat. He is a tough essay grader, and the multiple choice are okay. He does have a decent sense of humor and sometimes his off topic tangents are entertaining.
Excellent teacher, requires work though. Here's how to pass with a solid grade: take notes in lectures, read the textbook, show interest if you need help and he's excited to take the time to work with you, and be specific with details on your test essays. If you can memorize the bullet points for an essay and fill in around it, you'll be fine.
Mr. Stiehler was a very bad professor. Whenever he got mad or heard someone talking he would yell and make more of a distraction then the talking itself. After the first test everyone in the class did well so he accused us of cheating and made the tests insanely hard. Only 7 out of 35 people were able to get above a C and he said good.
I'm in the top of my class in high school, and this was honestly the hardest thing I have ever done. I know, this is a college course in a month, but this class is difficult. Re-think why you are taking this course, and you should consider getting a c before you admit to this class. If you are ready to put in the time you'll be fine.
This is a great professor! I feel a lot of people might take his no-nonsense style of talking as rudeness, but he simply puts the point across without any bull crap. Taking detailed lecture notes and reading are expected as well as good attendance but he doesn't mind if you get to class a bit tardy. Fun lecture style and a class to look forward to!
Has his own grading criteria. Unable to seek help from him or learning lab. Unclear directions on essays. He grades very heavy as if in Comp class. Would not recommend him.
This was a very difficult class. The lectures were good but, he often got ahead of himself. Would often lecture ahead of his slides. He did not like to be asked questions during lectures. He was a tough grader on the essays as well. He was paranoid that students were cheating so therefore made the tests extremely hard.
Professor Stiehler is very up-front about the requirements for the course. He grades very tough on the essays, so make sure you dump as much content into them as you can, as close to in order (where applicable) as you can. As with any college course, your grade is a direct reflection of how much time you put into it.
You get exactly what you put into this class. Stiehler will work with students who show that they put in work. He has long lectures and he gets a little monotonous so be prepared to take notes or have a recorder handy for later use if you space out. Overall, awesome professor. I signed up for his 1302 course as well.
awful professor! doesnt know how to teach
He doesn't have a research paper but he does have a 1-2 page essay required if you want a C at the end of each test. Tests follow his Learning Objectives word for word from the book. His lectures don't always cover his learning objectives so make sure to read the book.
You have to sit through the whole 3-hour lecture and none of that is on the tests at all. What's on the test is all the chapters that you have to read. It really left me wondering why I was even showing up to the lecture if nothing but maybe one question was on the test. He was unhelpful. I ended up having to withdraw.
He doesn't seem to be a bad dude, and his conservative worldview is refreshing for academia, and you only have to take 4 tests the entire year. He is extremely transparent about what you need to do to pass the test (Pay attention to the objectives) but his criteria for his essays are non existent. You have to write them for an A, but unattainable.
Really rude to students. Never helps students when they ask for help saying hes not a tutor hes a teacher. Honestly worst college professor I've ever had.
Literally dont take this class. He unreasonable, arrogant and a terrible professor. He also submitted a C for an essay grade and gave me no feedback or told me what I missed. Tests are extremely hard and his lectures dont cover the material. I attend a university with a 3.85 GPA and took this class for credit only. He sucks and is so rude.
Horrible professor. Would not take! He doesn't look at you during lectures and closes his eyes when he does. He hates questions! He will look at you while you have your hands raised and still wouldn't answer. No one liked him in my class. Someone had sneezed and he would stop the whole lecture to rant about it for 10 min.
god awful teacher and cannot teach an online calss. whole class is centered around 4 tests with 25 questions each.... the entire class is based off those 4 grades. god forbid u miss 5 questions on a test... any more youll fail the exam and 1/4 of the semester. Test questions are trash and convuluted 8/10 questions are "Which of these are NOT"
Professor Stiehler is an extremely hard grader. Your grade is made up of tests and the essays on the tests which can really suck for someone with testing anxiety like myself. The multiple choice section of the test is somewhat easy if you attend the lectures and study the learning objectives.
Prof spent lectures trying to figure out why he was lagging (he thought it was because too many people were viewing his Google slides link). Got behind on lectures and students had within the first days hours of lectures to listen to. Invasive computer monitoring / webcam monitoring REQUIRED for exams because he insists you will cheat. Don't take.
DO NOT TEXT QUESTIONS IN THE CHAT WHEN YALL MEET FOR ONLINE LECTURE.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. He was not caring and it seemed like he wanted students to fail.
I have a degree in PTA. I have taken microbiology, A&P, among other difficult courses. This is BY far the worst/most difficult class I've ever taken. His tests are all "which answer is not the correct one" and you have A-E to pick. So that makes it extremely hard to get a good grade. Please DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. I really wish I listened.
Worst professor Ive ever had. He should not be doing virtual classes. Rude, arrogant, and uncaring. His tests are extremely difficult, all questions are written in a very confusing manner designed to trick you, and expects you to regurgitate word-for-word the entire textbook for your essays. He boasts about it. Avoid taking his classes if you can.
If you like pure lecture and tests only this is the guy for you. I like the Prof just because he has a great radio voice and is funny but other than that the class is straight lecture and 4 tests for the whole semester. The tests are really hard unless you were taking pages of notes. I barely learned anything and would not recommend taking the clas
Did online classes and I want to die. The whole class is just 4 tests and some long lectures. Took 5+ pages of notes and studied for hours and still failed. I would usually blame myself for this but the questions are ment to trick you. I don't think I've really learned anything useful from this class. I would drop the class but my FAFSA says no.
Even if you're a good student who studies, takes notes and reads the textbooks you will be lucky to get a C. Stiehler was openly hostile to dual credit students and pressured every single one in my class to drop the course. His tests are formatted to trick you instead of testing your knowledge. He never answers questions and talks over students.
Worst professor Ive ever had in my academic career he is hostile to students and is not helpful in any way shape or form.
He gave us a learning objective so we can study for our exams and can know what to expect to see on our exams. When the exams came along he would put down different questions trying to throw off his students. As well on the essay portion of the exam, he would take away many points just for capitalization and punctuation.
Each class is a 1.5 hour lecture. Your entire grade is based off 4 exams and there is no extra credit. Every question is designed not only with trick questions, but also trick answers, and your exam grade is more based more off how much he likes you than the actual essay. He humiliated my friends just for asking a question or yawing. PLS STAY AWAY
I am normally an A student and *might* get a C in this class if I "learn to work harder". Essay feedback is unclear, professor is not accessible and he's not helpful. I've done tutoring plus all the reading, notes, etc and spend hours every day studying. I may drop the class because it's that bad.
a lot of people dislike him and i completely understand where they are coming from. he doesn't teach super well and assigns a lot of homework. my recc after being successful in his class is just getting used to a study method after taking the first test. once you get in the hang of how he writes his tests, you'll get a B or an A.
this teacher is amazing!!!! I took this class and got a failing grade on almost every test because Mr STIEHLER IS A GREAT TEACHER!! Adding a paragraph break because the professor told me to!!!! He is a firm believer in giving great lectures that contain absolutely no information relating to the questions on the test. I love this teacher!!
Worst class ever! There were four exams that are extremely difficult with trick questions and trick answers with a 3-5 page essay during the 8- minute exam time. The professor is not helpful and responds with canned responses. He's very condescending and insulting if you ever go to office hours. I wish I had withdrawn sooner.
He provides a list of 40-50 review questions for each test which helped MASSIVELY. You don't have to read entire chapters, just the stuff relating to the given questions. His feedback on my essays were very helpful and it was clear what I needed to do next time to get credit on my writing portion. The class is very formulaic.
Easily the worst professor I have had at ACC. Lectures about unimportant material like his trips around the globe. Explodes at students for little to no reason. Has a predefined view of each student based on their transcript before they ever walk into his class. His tests are all trick questions, essay grades are not based on the essay content...
This is a proper college level course and will challenge you accordingly. Prof. Stiehler is highly articulate and uses language that will sharpen your reading and writing comprehension. This class will improve your note taking, study habits and time management. You will learn to use your resources to succeed and that lesson in itself is invaluable.
DO NOT take a course with this professor. The only grades in the course are 4 exams including 25 multiple choice questions and an essay. The essays are pass/fail. Without the essay, the best grade you will get is a 70. The multiple choice are all basically trick questions. He once yelled at me for asking my friend for a pencil:)
Professor Stiehler was pretty good, I just had the misfortune of taking his course before History 1 and any English Composition classes. I still feel bad about making him read my word salad essays.
8 Wk asynchronous online course, lectures presented via Zoom (can attend or watch the lecture later) The course is only graded by 4 exams with optional essay for each. The tests are proctored, the essays are expected to be over 2 pages but dates are key for pass/fail in 80min.Grading scheme is frustrating, once the ship takes on water it is over.
Im a good student and did all the things necessary and couldnt pass his exams. I sat in the front and I took notes and studied.. a lot. He writes new questions every test and doesnt even glance at the stats of how the exam went. He is more than satisfied with the highest grade being a B. By the end only 5/30 students actually remained in the class
Very formulaic. 4 exams with multiple choice and essays. Multiple choice questions are tricky and very specific. Essays are pass/fail, easy to pass if you write at least 500 words + mention specific events and dates. LONG lectures... take online so you can watch at 2x. Appreciates hard work and might even reward you with extra points.
He was such a nice guy and very responsive. The issue was the teaching style, only 4 tests and they were all worth 25% and one retest. He only counted your essay if you got a 80% or above on your multiple-choice questions. He says the tests and textbooks are word for word (they aren't). The review ratio is all the explaining you need.
He is clearly very passionate about history but honestly not a great teacher. He is extremely hard on essay and exam grading and I spent 8+ hours a week reading the textbook, taking additional notes, watching youtube resources, and practicing for the essays and still only got C's. Ended up withdrawing. Take a different teacher if possible.
fosters an environment that discourages constructive dialogue and open discourse. reacts defensively to even the mildest forms of criticism. relies heavily on PowerPoint presentations, supplemented with irrelevant stories. minimal support for students preparing for exams, refusing to offer guidance or resources.
He has spent at least 20 out of the 80 minutes we get in class every session talking about barely, or completely unrelated political topics, such as Israel, former president Biden, and Anthony Fauci Regardless of one's individual feelings on said topics, he has wasted our time to deliver his own agenda at the expense of history.
This Professor was unnecessarily strict on grading he would grade the essay portion of our exam as if he were and English professor. He was extremely hostile to students would leave NO room for opportunity or different opinion, did not like questions, would turn students away from office hours. Take a different professor if possible.
The worst professor I've ever had always brings up high school. I get that high school is not hard, but for some reason, he thinks everyone in that class is not an adult or something. He doesn't allow hats in class and freaks out if you wear them. Only grades are 4 Exams taken with the essays, min 500 words. not a good dude Don't TAKE HIS CLASS.
Lectures run late, but he's thorough. Read the textbook, use the Learning Objectives as a study guide, and create an essay outline for each chapter to prepare for the exam. There are 4 unit exams with "optional" essays- do them anyway. Don't be intimidated by a professor that pushes you to work hard. Stiehler's class will make you a better student.
You take the class as an A or B student in English and History and leave dropping out or with a C. His essays are genuinely impossible to get credit for, I've shown my papers to faculty and they say it's insulting how awful the grading is. For a B+ paper you get 0 credit, he doesn't grade on content, just on if he likes you.
Worst college experience so far. Very disappointed in myself for not knowing about ratemyprofessors dot com because if I had, I wouldn't have wasted a drop/withdrawal on this man. He would go on frequent unrelated political tangents and had a weird no hat policy like it's the 20th century. Meanders during lectures too.
if you value your sanity DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. the only grades for his class are the test, so if you fail 2 test, there is absolutely no way to pass the class. He is a good guy, but i just would never take his class again. says to spend 6 TO 9 HOURS reading the textbook, aint no way anybody is doing all that.
You need to be ready to use your Learning objectives, he will yap about things that don't go with the criteria so I just used the learning objects he gave out before the start of a chapter. The learning objectives really help a lot! On the essays he wants you to be an English major so don't even try. Unless of course your a English major.
This class is worse than the internment camps he likes to lecture about. Less than 100 words were spoken by people that were not him during the duration of the course.
At the beginning of the course, he gives you false hope about getting an A or a B by saying that the only thing he grades is tests (if you want a C), or you can choose to write the essays to get a higher grade. It is utterly impossible to get credit for the essays. Everyone in my class ended up with a C in the course. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
