good teacher
Great Teacher, no doubt the best teacher in CS Dept.
Gives help whenever you need it
Tests are extremely easy!! Only 4 questions, don't have to memorize coding!!!!!!
He knows his stuff butt his english is lacking and that causes some problems.
Tests are easy, coding impossible. Bad accent but good w/ notes.
Tests unfair. they are only 4 or 5 ?s so you can't miss even one! otherwise good
He is a good teacher and very helpful. Hope he would give us more difficult exam
very nice guy. Class is a bit dull, but its the material....
Sometimes hard to understand. Very nice. If you read the book, tests very easy.
great teacher, teaches concepts rather than memorize code. learned a lot
Great prof.! Very clear explanations, interesting lectures, nice guy.
Excellent professor, couldn't ask for better. You need to memorize some coding
Great! I hope I can get him for my other CS classes. Try and get him.
Very nice. Always willing to take time out and help you if you dont understand.
A true passion for the material, nice guy, great teacher!
This dude is getting harder with each semester
Very Easy, heard that he's getting harder though. Get him if you can.
very friendly and very helpful. explains material well and is a great prof!!!
Great Prof! Always willing to help.
Loved him. One of the best teachers in CS dept. Take if you can. Great Teacher
Excellent! Cares about the students and their comprehension of the material
Very nice and easy, but learned absolutely nothing.
Does labs for you if you ask a question. Assigns stuff, then teaches the materia
good prof. very helpful when you ask questions
Trefftz rocks my socks. Best prof in the CS dept by far.
Very easy, but if you're a grad student you feel like you learn nothing.
great prof! actually gives useful examples, not just theory like grissom. *****
very nice, very easy grader. If you know Java hes the easiest teacher to take (your guar. an A), if you dont then he will help you a lot, but lectures are not setup for teaching the material very well.
i would say best teacher in CSIS department...knows his stuff plus always help the student when they need help.
He is an excellent professor!
awesome prof, easy grader, always willing to help if you have questions. plus he's just a very nice guy
Easy class. He is always willing to help and can spend long times explaining one thing. Great teacher. A little hard to understand some times.
Great professor. Very willing/able to help. Lots of experience applied to class discussion. Tests fairly easy, but may not prepare you for final exam (which is written by the CS department).
Great teacher... but try to supplement your study too bcos the final might be a killer, and probably Trettzc doesn't want to discourage u, so he grades u easily. For final, u might land in pain on ur backside if u've not read wide. Exam is set by CS Dept
if there was ever a prof that wants u to do good, its Trefftz. pay close attention in class, i had absolutely no experience with Java before this class, and i came out just fine without any stress. there will be times of confusion, but he will totally u
Excellent guy, I would recommend him to anyone. Although his accent makes him a little hard to understand at times, he more than makes up for it in other areas.
good guy if you have any problems go to him and he will gladly help you out
Great computer prof!! He really knows his stuff and is Very helpful. Id recommend him any day!
Piece of cake class. Learned applications of software and rarely attended lecture (which is him reading powerpoint slides.) Prof is friendly and helpful. In a way a waste of time class, try to test out if possible.
Great Prof, Have a good understanding of the subject. Very Helpfull.
Very easy prof. He really tries to make sure that everyone does well in the class. Just do the little bit of homework he gives and come to class and you are almost guaranteed an A.
Only semester teaching compilers... wasn't all to do with compilers, more to do with random topics. Class was incredibly easy; but didn't actually learn a whole lot.
Very nice professor. If you do the homework assignments, and put a little bit of effort into them, you should get an A. He is very willing to help during his office hours. He is an easy grader. Very fair, very interested in students learning, very nice guy.
Does not explain things well in class sometimes, but tests are assignments are easy regardless. I had a very hard time trying to meet with him during office hours. He was never there when he said he'd be. Show up and do the work, and this class is an easy A.
lectures/labs are voluntary.the only time you need to go anywhere is when you have a question, a test, or need to turn something in.finish your assingments, they'll be the breaking point if you don't do well on tests. he's helpful, and understanding.
If you pay attention you could learn something in this class. The homeworks are few and easy. They are really just for practice. He's a great guy and very smart. Ask him and he will always help you out, even if it doesn't have to do with that class. Always available for assistance.
VERY good teacher. Class is optional, so as long as you understand the subject, you can just show up for the tests to get an easy A. Very helpful, clear, and genuinely cares about his students. Only downside is he gives out weekly assignments (don't worry, they are easy)
He is a very nice professor. I am a nerd, so this stuff was easy for me. I skipped at least half of the classes and got an A. You do need the book for homework. The midterm and final are hard. The first couple computer tests are easy but the excel and access tests you will probably need to study for. I would definitely take him again!
This class was extremely easy. The midterm exam didn't have much to do with the lectures at all, but it was really easy. It would be crazy to say that not everyone got an A in the class, because there wasn't much too it. Great professor!
You will never open the book. Go to most of the classes, do the few homeworks and you'll get an A.
The easiest CS professor you'll ever have. Very nice and friendly. He'll spend 20 minutes writing stuff slowly on the board, spend 10 minute telling you stories and telling you to go to grad school, and then let class out 20 minutes early. Homework is nonexistent, projects are doable, and exams are laughably easy.
If you are even given a chance to take him as a prof do it. If you pay attention you will learn a lot. He makes it very hard to fail his class. He is always willing to help. I have taken him for 3 upper level CS classes and received all great grades
good prof, uses many examples to teach which is good when learning something completely new
A smart, cheerful, and relaxed professor. There was no homework, ever. The book is almost useless. His study guides match the tests almost exactly. Attendance isn't taken. I would highly recommend him to anyone taking any CIS course.
I don't get CS at all and Prof Trefftz only slightly fixed that problem. I get more now, but all the projects and tests and quizes were difficult. He's always availble during office hours, but be careful, because he tends to just write the program FOR you instead of explaining and have you do it so I got no experience. He's also extrememly nice.
Most chill professor I've ever had. Has a very soothing voice, and enjoys elegant code more than anything else. Exams are easy, homework is basically nonexistent.
Trefftz is one of the nicest men I have ever met. Not only does he try to help you as much as possible, he is very understanding of life circumstances. My mom went to the hospital for 5 days in an emergency and he took time to help me understand my project and turn it in late. I would recommend him to any 162 student.
Previous comments are true. Very helpful. Wants you to succeed. Come to class and you will learn what you need to know for projects. Do not procrastinate on projects. Go to office hours and you will receive all the help you need.
He was very helpful and the work load was surprisingly reasonable. I would recommend him.
This professor is one of those profesors you don't see too often. Java Programming can be very hard to comprehend: especially if it is your first programming language. Mr. Trefftz has helped me so much throughout the entire semester. He will test you, but he will also guide you. He cares about his students and he wants his pupils to be successful.
Trefftz is a great professor. He will give you alot of insight to the fields of CS or IS and help you decide which one would be better for you. He's more interested in making you successful than he is interested in making class difficult. Very clear teacher, although has a slight accent(usually fine). Tests are straightforward as well. Recommended.
So glad I took this professor, I feel like he was a great stepping stone into the CS major. If I need help later on I know he will be there for me. Sometimes he will go over hard concepts in coding and take you step by step in a project (very helpful). As long as you do your projects on time, you will get an A. Also going to class is very helpful.
Professor Trefftz is really helpful in class! He likes to do a lot of the coding for you, instead of coaching you through it, though. He has a slight accent, but his lectures are usually clear and give plenty of examples that you'll use in the projects. The weekly labs are mandatory, but usually not too bad, and he lets you listen to music!
I have taken Trefftz for a couple classes. This guy is awesome, if you have trouble just go to his office hours and I bet you will leave understanding the material. He seems to always be available when I have had problems and always gets excited to work with me during office hours. He also always has very clear expectations from his students.
Helped me with many projects. Did not play favorites; was helpful to everyone. Encouraged his students to work to the best of their ability, and was understanding of issues. Would often move deadlines when the class needed it. That said, this wasn't an easy-A, and you do have to work for it, but he'll help you do it. Very good professor.
I LOVE TREFFTZ. HE IS THE MAN. Honestly, I was completely new to programming and he helped A TON. He is always there for you and really wants to see you succeed. There are 5 time-consuming projects due over the course of the class and I went to his office hours for help every time, and he helped me until I fully understood. Amazing professor.
He is a great teacher! He really cares about his students and does a great job teaching. You will do well in this class if you just show up and get the work done. He sometimes takes quiz questions from the online book. He is a pretty good grader if you put the effort in. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Simply the best prof at GVSU. This man is the reason why I am so successful today. The projects are hard and will stress you out. Go to his office hours and get to know him, you will learn A TON. He will drink some hot cocoa and help you program your project while making sure you understand everything. This guy turned my life around.
Professor Trefftz is an incredibly kind individual and an excellent teacher. He has a more traditional style where he simply lectures to you. However, the bulk of the class is spent on the projects, which are some of the hardest in the CS curriculum. Professor Trefftz is incredibly helpful, though. He made this class great, and I'd take it again.
Prof Trefftz goes through all of the material in the class with lots of details and patience. He answers all questions, is very forgiving with grading for labs and projects because he is more concerned with progress than harsh grades. Overall, he is an excellent professor that anyone would be lucky to have.
He is the man. He has trouble explaining some concepts, but makes up for it by showing his own code. Very helpful and willing to go the extra mile for students. He always includes partial credit, and you could probably turn in half of an exam and he would give you a 75%. Hes a cool dude. Definitely would take another class of his.
Nice guy. Not the best teacher, but he is definitely much better than the others. Tests are pretty easy, very relaxed.
Cool guy. pretty relaxed.
Trefftz made tricky concepts clear, readily answered any questions asked, and was always around to help with homework. I sent him so many emails when I got stuck and he always responded very quickly and helpfully. He's looking to help his students learn, not to give bad grades, and gives lots of partial credit. Put in the work and you'll get an A!
Dude is a bro. Legitimately take him if you have an opportunity.
When asked questions Professor Trefftz was very clear when answering them and didn't make the concepts harder than they had to be. Very easy grader, but still felt like I learned something. I'm already scheduled to take him again next year for a data structures class. Bonus points for being laid back and having a good sense of humor. A great prof
Trefftz is a solid professor. He is extremely knowledgeable and can answer most questions off the top of his head. He is very chill and does a good job making an extremely tough class manageable. He also "required" a textbook but there are no problems assigned from it. I did not buy it and I was perfectly fine.
Very good prof. Made it really fun to learn.
Really cares about the students, and doesn't try to screw you over with hard exams or projects. Assignments and exams were easy, definitely take him!!
Trefftz is a good prof and incredibly nice. Sometimes his lectures are a little bit confusing, but he is very accessible outside of class if you need. He also is a lenient grader, if you make an effort you should get a good grade.
Dr. Trefftz was forced to teach COBOL after professor Hornik passed away, and this guy did the best he could with the very limited amount of time he had to prepare. He truly cares about all his students, and is extremely easy to approach. Take Trefftz if you see him teaching a course. You'll learn and enjoy your time.
Professor Trefftz is very knowledgeable and is able to get the point across on many topics within CIS. This class was a mix of Computer architecture, OS, databases, and TCP/IP protocols. Testing and hw level was appropriate for the amount of coursework. Transition to online learning with Stay at Home order was smooth and easy to adjust to.
You're only graded by 3 main assignments, a midterm, a final exam and a presentation at the end of the semester. I showed up 3x a week as it was a traditional style learning, I could have learned this online too. Sadly, he is retiring soon so it won't be the same.
Trefftz is a great professor for COBOL. Very lenient and loves to help. Labs due once a week. Super easy. He's a great guy who cares a lot about his students. Take him!!
I took Professor Trefftz for CIS 263, his class is really easy, he literally gives u finals and midterms from last semester for you to study, so it is basically free A is you do the homework and study for the exams. But I have to say, he is not very good at online teaching, he's class can be pretty boring when it is online.
I love professor Trefftz, very chill, make sure you do all the projects because the class is graded by few things, he gives you study guides for midterm and final, just make sure you look over them, you will understand why once you see the exams, data structure is hard and important, but this class is actually pretty ez.
His lectures are pretty good and he gives you a PDF for the book which is used often. Not many assignments but they aren't difficult and he's an easy grader on HW. Keep up with the reading and study for the exams bc he's a little tougher on those. If you don't understand the lectures just ask and he'll help you.
I don't know why, but Colombian professors at GVSU seem to be the best teachers. As long as you show up to the class and use sparknotes on the books you'll be just fine. Also the book is free, he provides it to you. Bonus ducks for him Midterm is open note and very easy to get a 100 on. Overall great guy. Please do yourself a favor and take him
Does a decent job at explaining things in class, but is very helpful when you ask him a specific question, whether in a lab or about a project. Super generous and fair grader. Would recommend.
The class could be a little slow and dry sometimes, but overall very reasonable and good teacher. Projects are straightforward, and several days of review for each exam so as long as you show up and mostly pay attention the class is not difficult.
It is very easy to bs your way thru the class and end up with a good grade, the midterm and final are identical to the review he gives u, so look into those
goated
Love Professor Trefftz! This is my second course with him and I would happily take another course with him again. He's very kind and considerate to his students, very down to earth, and very knowledgeable. I wish I could take Trefftz for all of my courses! Highly recommend taking him at least once!
One of the best professors I've had in 3 years at GV. He is a super easy grader and if you put in effort, you will pass. He reuses past year's exams for your study guide, so if you study with those, it will be almost the exact same on your exam. He's a really great and understanding professor and actually cares and wants you to succeed.
Love him! Definitely take for 263--easiest class I've taken. That's not to say I did not learn a lot--I definitely did! Follow his examples and ask questions he loves to help. Study the midterm/final review and you will ace every exam.
chillest professor at gv,
He treats you like you are a 5-year-old, very very nice guy, very chill, very caring, and grades extremely easy. To the point, I feel like he is just handing everyone As for participation. Not saying I am complaining, but I feel like if everyone is getting As, what is the point of grades lol, makes me not motivated to try.
Easily accessible. Easy class where very little is learned (pointless class). Easy to skip class with the exception of pop quizzes but he allows make ups. Only a couple homeworks, couple quizzes, and 2 exams so do what's assigned and you'll do fine. Zybooks work was easy and most of our grade. Takes 2-3 explanations before you understand
The professor is cooperative and helpful. GOAT.
Professor Trefftz makes this class super easy. Just follow his examples, study the review materials, and you'll ace the exams. The lectures are helpful, and unstuckstudy is a great tool for exam prep. An overall easy A if you put in the effort.
