All I can say is "?"
Way to tough. I even got a tutor and the tutor said his tests are crazy. I dropped and out of about 20-30 students 5 were left that what one of the remaining students told me so good luck.
i don't know why a college like fresno city would hire a teacher like him. IF u can teach yourself from book without having help from him, he is the teacher for u. I wouldn't recommend him.i ended up dropping his class.
???
Ok, so, ya the only way i get by in this class is having to teach myself from the book, which isn't very easy, but i might as well not be in the class, its all stuff you have to go home and teach yourself anyways! but however he is a new teacher so maybe he'll get better with time?
Do yourself a favor and do not take this teacher!
He is the worst teacher ive ever had. His lectures never covered material that was on the tests. out of 30 students only 4 students survived. Dont take this teacher.
if u signed up for this class next semester.....god help you!!! better yet, get out now while u still can!! dont wat o "see" if the class will work out, IT WONT. he wont even kindly offer help or an explanation on material, he'll just shut you down, and make u figure it out, no help what so ever! how do u learn form that?!!?
very cool person...super liberal..but worst teacher i have had...oh my god was he confusing...i was one of the 30 that did not survive!!!
!!!!!NEVER TAKE ANY CHEMISTRY COURSE WITH THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!!!! HE'S GOT A VERY NICE PERSONALITY AND AT THE BEGINING HE SEEMS TO BE A REALLY NICE PERSON. HOWEVER, HIS TEACHING SKILLS ARE VERY QUESTIONABLE. TOO MANY BREAKS. HE DOES NOT EXPLAIN THE MATERIAL PROPERLY. IF YOU ARE IN HIS CLASS RIGHT NOW
Oh god. His class was so freaking hard. His method of teaching is confusing. I didn't understand most of the things he was saying. Not very helpful. I suggest you take someone else. His test are really hard.
Mr V's tests are hard, but if you cannot handle his class, how can you handle upper division chemistry classes? He teaches well, but his tests take a step up so you have to apply more concepts. If you don't know how to study, then don't take his class. Mr V is an awesome person.
There were a lot of students in my class that did very poorly and almost all of them complained about how horrible Mr. V was as an instructor. Ironically, I never saw any of those people at the tutorial center or the GRASP session and most of them did very little of their homework and missed several classes. I can't imagine why they had such a ha
He's a funny teacher, very enthused about chemistry. he has a bit of a dorky personality. however, his tests are extrememly hard, especially his essay questions...makes us think hard. don't take him if you want the easy A. you need to read the book, read his notes, DO THE HW probs!!! that is ifyou want the A.
dont take this class with him. youll have better understanding reading the but than listening to him. if your repeating this class. you better consider another professor. but i passed tho. i got a A but without really getting any help from him. thank god im over this class
Knows material fairly well. Tests arent too hard. Is very willing to go over material outside of class. Kinda political though, just make sure your BS filter is turned on here and you'll be fine. He's interesting and generally makes the material clear. Labs arent too hard, real cookie cutter. Chem 3A for you though.
Just be prepared to study hard! He is not easy, but I can say that if you read the book and come to lecture(this is a must), you will get a good grade in the class. His tests are not easy; you have to think-it's not straight forward; a lot of math and problem solving. Know that he was hard but trained me pretty well for Chem 1A;
This dude is an ass. he is the hardest teacher i have ever taken. If you ask for help he wont give it. His test are way to advanced. Over half the class right now would be failing if not for his curve. He is a ****
Yes he is hard but this is Chemistry! If you don't need to take a chemistry course then don't take one. If you're not interested in going to class on a regular basis and doing homework then why go to school? If you like science, need to take chemistry and are willing to go to class/do work then take him. He's not as bad as everyone makes him to be.
While this is community college, it is still college. Mr. V. doesn't hold your hand, he expects you to put in the time & effort reading the text, coming to lecture and doing the HW. If you do this and want to learn, you'll be fine. His tests are very hard & force you raise your game. Those looking for an easy "A", he is not the instructor for you.
Read these comments carefully! Yes, the class is hard. Afterall, it's chemistry. It requires a lot of time, homework, reading, attendance is a must, and studying. Mr. V grades on a curve, gives opportunities for extra credit, and lectures well. I never had chem in high school and struggled w/the material but I only missed ONE lecture - got an A.
not an easy class but great teacher!!!!
chemistry is a hard class. you need to read the book and study in order to pass. didnt really learn anything from lecture but did go to tutorial center for help and it did help a lot.
He's not very helpful at all, he's not a good teacher to take because you can't understand him. I understood the book way better than his lecture. I have and A- but, still, I had to work hard to get that A. I would advise you not to take him. Attendance is mandatory and it's minus 5 points for every absence
This class is VERY hard. Exams are EXTREMELY hard and most people bomb them. The curve might save you, it might not. Chemistry, even 3A, is not to be underestimated. He uses blackboard a lot. Labs must be completed and turned in both on paper AND on blackboard. Annoying. Very slow to post grades/exam results but he expects yours on time. NO Lates!
Mr V is not an easy teacher, but Chemistry is not easy! Those looking for an easy teacher shouldn't waste their time taking Chemistry at all.It is an extremely hard class, and you must be serious about it.This includes attending lecture, doing your homework and studying A LOT!Mr V is a great teacher,he's funny, and I highly recommend him.
Thank GOD I PASSED. Because taking this class again would've killed me. TAKING Vellandi you will have to learn it all on your own go to Tutorial center. it's helpful read your book do practice problems and GOOD LUCK! His lectures are useless he's all over the place.
I honestly thought he was a clear and easy teacher. He was always there after class to help if needed. I took Chem3A as a summer class so there was a lot of homework in short periods of time. I seriously was dreaming Chemistry, but with hard work and good notes any class should be easy. I got an A.
Class was good and interesting, but the teacher was a jerk. He was very demeaning to students and treated people like they were 10 year olds. I got a A in the class, but noticed that he only liked smart students and treated everyone else horribly! Teacher has lost a lot of love and patience for subject- very quick tempered and not approachable!
Good teacher, and fun. just do your work.
He is ok but he doesn't explain things too well. He tells you to refer to your textbook if you don't understand. Test aren't that hard, just study the book and notes. Most labs are due online and require work to be done outside of the lab hour. He will over explain the lab during lab hour so you will be in lab the entire time.
vellandi really understands students. he's down to earth and tries to use regular vocabulary in his lectures vs. complex explanations. he gets off every now n then and talks about really random things but he has a very funny personality. he's laid back too. we sat & chat w/him half the time in lab. get to know him & he'll like you
I took him for the 2nd time and got a B. My first problem...never went to lab, it was on a Friday. I would have passed the first time but at the very end, unexpectangly he failed me with A F!!! All because of Lab attendence, very important, you must go to lab to pass, oh and study your booty off.
He's a good teacher, but a strict one. he likes to be very organized when it comes to turning in work, for his sake. He doesn't make things confusing, but it is chemistry. It could be hard sometimes to get a hold of him out of class. he does demand allot when it comes to Lab work. Get fast at doing calculations, it helps.
this teacher is useless, i teach chemistry to myself every night for hours on end. he never returns emails, he never teaches friday labs, he lectures in other labs and doesnt in others, hes the head of the chem dept and is over worked. his lectures suck, he strays to things that dont ever pertain to the class.on top of it hes rude with weird teeth
Mr. V is approachable and very helpful, yet disorganized. All his grading was done last minute (as in the end of the semester). No feedback on lab & hw assignments. His grading program made errors and didn't input scores on his grade sheet. Stay on top of your hw and lab assignments to make sure he receives them and you get credit for them!
Good teacher Knows his stuff. Chem is a hard class either way. Takes lectures practically out of the book. Be sure to keep on top of hw and labs online and hard copy. Fun labs. Tries to lighten the mood with talking about his kids, which is a nice break. Got a B, but worked my butt off.
Good teacher Knows his stuff. Chem is a hard class either way. Takes lectures right out of the book. Be sure to keep on top of hw & labs online & hard copy. Fun labs. Tries to lighten the mood w/ talking about his kids, which is a nice break. Got a B, but worked my butt off. Only drawback is he doesn't respond to emails gotta meet him after class.
DO THE HOMEWORK. I WAS .5 PERCENT FROM GETTING A C because i didnt do the hw!!!!!you dont need to try hard in this class because the crazy curves going to bump up your grade on the test. a d turns to either a b. c to a.
I learned a lot from his class. I will never forget how he taught ?fate, ?fite and electron configurations. He knows what he is teaching. It's better for you to read the book ahead of the class. He is mostly 5 mins late for his class. Those who are looking for an easy 'A', please don't take his class.
Avoid this class at all costs.Impossible to get a decent grade if you are not familiar with the subject.Homework assignments are EXTREMELY long and worth hardly any points at all but without them you will be lost.Tests are EXTREMELY hard and you never get enought time. Instructor is ALWAYS late and VERY disorganized.
Doesnt post any grades until the very last week of the semester so you have no clue what your grade looks like.No reviews or study guides for tests so you have no clue what it will look like. The only good thing is there is a HUGE curve on tests because otherwise majority of the class would fail every test.
He is a nice guy personally but useless as an instructor. I spent most of the semester in the tutorial center because he explains things way more complicated then they are. Tomorrow is the last day of class and nobody has a clue what their grade looks like because he hasn't posted any grades in FOREVER. Tests are really hard and 600/800 pts.
He is a wonderful person to talk to and very informative. BUT...he is very difficult to understand and makes the subject way worse than it already is. He grades papers late, makes it almost impossible to see where you stand grade wise in class.
I just finished his class and I got a C not bad since I missed a couple of labs, his tests are kinda on the hard side but as long as you read the book and study you will be ok. Every chemistry class is hard.
I just finished his class and I got a C not bad since I missed a couple of labs, his tests are kinda on the hard side but as long as you read the book and study you will be ok. Every chemistry class is hard.
Hard class if you're lazy. Go to the tutorial center, they'll do your homework for you.
class extremely hard! makes class more difficult then needed to be...rude most of the times altogether class is hard
awesome prof. chem is hard and I think he presents it the right way. awesome sense of humor. if you like chemistry you will like him. he teaches so you will "discover" the science. get way to prepare us for the real world. you WILL work your but off. i have two more chem classes after 3A and would take his if he teaches either or both. great dude
Unfairly gets a bad rap. Weird sense of humor, VERY smart. Has great teaching strategies in which you work problems out with partners on a whiteboard during class. Labs are fun, content is hard. Effort put in matches your grade. Bad ratings are most likely from bad students. In my class, the ones that didn't drop appreciated him and tried to learn.
Horrible teacher. He doesn't answer emails and does all of the work on line. He spends much class time talking about his personal life. No on cares.
Very hard course and difficult instructor. Book is more clear than lectures are he is very unapproachable makes you feel stupid if you have question on how to do things. ETC is a great help go there if you don't understand how to do things, they will help you there. Homework should be expected and read lab procedures and chapters before class.
No clue what the grade is, we would be lucky if he even returns our tests before the semester ends (finals are next week). He has s tendency to get up on his soap box during lecture. Get this class with a different instructor, you wont regret it.
Yes, he is hard. But he is a good teacher and I learned a lot. Chemistry is hard, and no matter who the teacher is you have to take extra time to learn material on your own.
This teacher is very hard! I do not recommend anyone to take him. The tests are very hard he does not give you any studyguides & you never know what exactly to study. Besides when you need help he gets mad.DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I love Chemistry ever since so I find his class interesting. I took his class last 2010 and got an A. I actually didnt know that many students dont like him until after the semester. Yes, he doesnt give study guide but I think his questions on his test all came from what he lectured. I think he's a good teacher
Class was very frustrating. Makes what was learned back in high school harder to understand than it needs to be. Didn't like how he does last minutes posting on blackboard in the morning when lab was in a few hours. Lectures gets out of topic and confusing, but to pass you have to teach yourself, read text, and do work ahead of time.
A lot of comments really are uncalled for. The tests are difficult, but never asked anything not covered in class. The thing I really feel that I should mention is that he let me take my final at a later time after I misinterpreted the schedule and missed it the first time. Difficult, but understanding and willing to help out as much as he can.
mean. hard. unorganized.
Mr. Vellandi frequently goes off on tangents. Could complete class in 20 minutes but he spends the whole time lecturing about life lessons that don't even pertain to chemistry. Has WAY too high expectations for a community college chem class. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM
I'm pretty sure I didn't pass this class. Nonetheless great teacher!! He has a great teaching style! He says from the get go this class will be hard! Prepare to study like crazy! He will help you if you ask him! Don't understand the bad reviews I really enjoyed his summer chem3a class!
mean, hard, mean
Overall, Mr. Vellandi is a laid backnice professor. But, I don't care for his teaching style at all. He tends to go off on tangents and doesn't really teach what he has to within 50 minutes of lecture. Since he doesn't always get to the point, I have to teach myself by reading the text and figuring out the hw myself. VERY FRUSTRATING!
He yells and bashes us. He doesn't have a set lecture prepared and just comes to class and wings the lectures and tangents off then lab day just expects us to know what he knows. He's not good with clarifying also, don't even bother to ask questions he doesn't care. What I HATE most we do the hw and learn the materials ourselves he doesn't cover it
Don't bother asking questions he doesn't care. You learn yourself by hw online and ironically if he can stop talking about himself he'll teach you a thing or two. He's impatient, yells and bashes medical students if you don't understand him. Doesn't have a set topic on lectures and tends to just wing his lectures. Hope FCC faculty sees this.
Horrible instructor. Expects you to know everything before you enter the class. He was never prepared to lecture and was always late. Don't take his class! I went to etc everyday and still it was difficult to learn. Majority of the class fails and he even says it too. He's super negative as well.
Very tough instructor. He doesn't go by the book, so if you don't understand the material too bad. He skips chapters like crazy and his lectures are all over the place. He doesn't like to explain things more than one time, unless he is in a good mood. Not helpful at all. He also yells a lot, that gets old really quick.
When driving to school, I don't wear a seat belt because I hope that I will die before I reach this class.
His lectures are entertaining yet consist of many tangents. He is willing to help serious students who are well-prepared but has no patience for unthoughtful questions or mental laziness. He expects you to learn the material and read on your own. He does not spoon feed Chem. He expects you to work and really think. Lab lectures are his strong suit.
Did not expect to pass. I failed every test, but I did all the lab assignments and did great on the online homework. He is a really nice guy in his office hours but it mean in class. He does not repeat himself, talks down to nursing students if you do bad on your work, and yells at you if you talk and if you ask a question that he feels is a waste.
do not take him. he is really confusing he does not teaches right. joking all the time . waste of time he should not be called a teacher honestly you will have to teach yourself .
He curves grades on tests really hard (in a good way, like you get an F you get a C), seriously, I got 2550 right on one of the tests and he gave me a 73%. He teachers what needs to be on the test and his classes are entertaining. Don't skip class though. :P
I've got to admit, Vellandi's reputation got me scared. He is very strict and can be mean...I know because he's made me cried a few times and I'm not the sensitive type. But if you have never taken a chemistry course before or it's been a while, Vellandi is the best and explains really well. I would definitely take him again despite how mean he is
He's not easy but his curve on exam's is extremely generous. If you fail an exam even after the curve your not doing your part. Be prepared to learn the math on your own because he doesn't go over it. Personally I think he's an excellent professor but his style definitely requires a certain type of student.
I consider myself to be a good student, I go to class, do all my homework, and I have a D. I enjoy the man but not his teaching strategies... If you don't get it.... He won't explain.
This guy threw my calculator on the ground because I didn't bring the right one. Then he gets irritated when he saw me use scratch paper as a calculator. Told me I won't make it in time without one. I did finish 10min before class end and score an 82 on his first test.
He's really a great guy. He engages with his students, but has way too high expectations. His lecture's are completely irrelevant towards exams. You have to learn the material on your own with no guidance as to what will be on them. Four lecture exams and one final. Lots of lab and online homework without being taught the information. Good guy tho.
He is awesome! Passed with an B, dedication-and lots of time studying! Do the mastering A&P and take good notes! His notes actually help you, its like a short guide for problem solving strag. READ before hand, if you don't - you will not know what he is talking about in lectures LOL
I passed every test, he curves every test by a lot. So even passing every test I still did not pass the class. The labs are a joke, he grades extremely ridiculous and hard on labs, that's what killed me. Not willing to help you at all with points. I showed up to every class and lab. He just has ridiculously high expectations in my opinion
As a person, Mr. Vellandi is a great guy. As a professor, his failing is lack of feedback. The course is dependent on test grades. 75% of your grade is from exams. There are no quizzes and he grades infrequently. All grades (save tests) came out finals week, so it's hard to know how you're doing before you are tested. Tutors will help save you.
Seriously the worst professor I've ever had. Disrespectful towards his students and completely a fan of lectures irrelevant to material. My recommendation for passing his class as did I, is tutoring, a personal tutor, and study groups. Asking him for help or thinking he'll actually take the time to explain things to you is pointless.
First day of class. No syllabus given out. Went home to check bkackboard after class. No syllabus available. Disorganized and don't know what to expect because there is obviously no syllabus. It's college. What the heck?
One pacific thing is when you taking the test. He's open a huge clock in front of you so how do you keep calm to do the test with 50 question on just around 57 minutes
Bottom line don't take him. He's a great guy but a horrible professor. He's a very harsh grader and not very helpful. DO NOT TAKE
I would not recommend. He says he isn't there to teach us anything that is our job. He is not approachable and says he is the last person to ask anything, ask another student. I think he has been teaching this subject for so long he forgot that chem is pretty much a foreign language to us, of which, we do not have a degree in. Spare yourself.
He is the absolute worst instructor I have ever taken. I am a hard worker and dedicate time to my classes but this guy is ridiculous. He is not helpful at all. Refuses to answer questions without making you feel like a complete idiot. It makes me pretty sad that with so much knowledge and ability he doesn't have the passion to help us succeed.
Vellandi is an intelligent person, however, he lacks in teaching skills. On the first day of instruction, there was no syllabus or class schedule. He finally gave them to us 2 weeks after the first class. Overall, he is unorganized, lectures about nonsense that is not on the tests, and discourages students from pursuing certain careers. Do not take
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Almost everything mentioned on here by other students is accurate! He's disorganized, can be mean when u ask him for help, no syllabus alike the first 2 weeks etc... you HAVE to read the book and teach yourself the material or go to ETC to save yourself from a low grade since he's a very harsh grader. It's ridiculous!!!!
Vellandi will not make an effort to make sure you understand the material. He hardly remembers where he left from the previous lecture. And he loves proofing people wrong, like all scientists, rather than giving support. Get ready to hear about his life adventures and personal opinions.
Vellandi hardly remembers where he left from the previous lecture. And he loves proofing people wrong, like all scientists, rather than giving support. Get ready to hear about his life adventures and personal opinions.
Great so far! Vellandi is hilarious and really knows the subject!
Really good professor. Read the textbook, go to class and take notes and you'll do fine. Go to grasp with any questions on material. I have an A and freaked out when I read the reviews on here before taking the class. He doesn't give out A's you gotta read and know your stuff. He's hands down the best professor I've had at city thus far.
Does not update grades on Canvas!!! Talks too much about his personal life experiences vs. the materials. The lecture before an exam will be spent going over new material for the next exam, not relevant to the approaching exam. Be prepared to teach yourself the material. I could go on and on. At all cost, avoid his class due to structure.
I would not recommend this class. Vellandi is by far the worst Professor I've ever had. He rambles on during lab time about his own personal experiences. If you have a question about something in specific be prepared for a rude response. He wasn't helpful at all and expects you to know information just off hand.
Very tough professor but, an easy to understand professor. He dos talk about his life but most of it has to do with Chemistry and if not its because he notices than his students are getting out of focus especially in a six hour summer class. If you plan on taking him for summer be prepared to think chemistry 24/7.
I took Mr. V over the 4-week summer school. He is very nice and accommodating for his students. He does tend to get off tangent during lectures and a tough grader for labworks. He is very good at explaining difficult subjects and answers students questions always. Don't take him if you want an easy A, his classes require work and perserverance
The Good: Vellandi loves science, he can literally talk about it all day. He treats you like a chemist because you are taking a chemistry course. He curves exams if the whole class does bad. The bad: Vellandi doesn't allow notes on the exams, only a basic calculator, and the exams are all heavy towards the final grade. You'll be teaching yourself.
Mr V has told us thats its not his job to teach us, its ours. Hes rude when you ask questions; a bully when you go to his office hours. It took several wks to get our syllabus. He talks about his personal life so we are over a month behind. He rarely grades. He flat out lies about what hes going to do with grades. DO NOT TAKE!
Mr. Vellandi is very passionate about chemistry. He can be condescending and rude. He's instruction is not as clear as he thinks it is. If you make a mistake he will put you down in front of the class. Expect to be discouraged. If you want a good grade this class you will need to attend GRASP and ETC, other wise expect a C or to repeat the class.
Mr. Vellandi is not a recommended Chemistry teacher. If youre able to get a conversation with him it will go ok depending on the topic , but dont expect good things to come. Hes very rude, disrespectful, yells at students, gets side tracked easily and takes away time from learning. Cannot complete experiments on time. His grading is terrible.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He's extremely unorganized and rants about topics that don't at all pertain to the class. He's also extremely moody and rude, which makes for uncomfortable classes. He knows a lot about chemistry and expects his students of an intro class to keep up with him, which is nearly impossible, Don't take him!
Mr. V is the probably the most difficult instructor Ive had before transferring to CSU. Ive taken Calculus, Bio and other difficult courses, but not as hard as this one. You must learn through the textbook, YouTube, ETC., and any other source you can. Do not take this class if you have over 12 units. It will consume your schedule.
He knows his stuff, but he cannot teach. Most of the things I learned are from the Aleks homework and the ETC leader. Instead of helping students when they get something wrong, he would yell at them and put them on blast. Basically, Aleks is your professor and you're learning things yourself. Attend ETC, you'll learn more than from him.
Worst teacher ever. Don't take him! He is that vine with the little kid that yells idiots. He knows chemistry yes, but he assumes we are geniuses as well. His lectures are literally everywhere you won't learn. If he's the only teacher that fits your schedule no just take It another semester. Probably what you're going to do anyway if you decide to
This was the only prerequisite class left that i needed to take bio 22! if you are like me and need this class, please do believe all the reviews on here. I REALLY RECOMMEND to take another professor. Do not waste your time!
If you want to be screamed at for asking questions, learn the material on your own, sit through meaningless lectures, here personal stories, learn about material that isn't on the exams, copy word for word 3+ page lab procedures on a notebook, this is the guy for you. His curves are insane since not doing so would have him at a 0% passing rate.
His quote was "I'm not here to teach you, you are here to learn so I'm going to learn you. So if you think im here to teach you are wrong." and that exactly what he did. You cant ask him nothing cause your already suppose to know the stuff. His test are 50 questions for 50 min but by the time you start the test you already lost 15 min. horrible
Honestly the WORST teacher I've had by far, he doesn't lecture on any of the material and he just makes you do the ALEKS homework with no help or assistance. Our three-hour lab class consists of him telling "motivational" speeches and personal stories. he comes to class with NOTHING prepared with just his lunch 5-20 minutes late! overall STAY AWAY
He assigns a lot of homework and he won't teach you how to do the assignments. He also expects you to learn everything on your own. Don't waste your time taking chemistry with this professor. He's super specific on how he wants things and if you don't do the way he asked it to be then you'll docked points or won't get credit.
He doesn't teach what is on the homework. He goes off topic a lot! 3 hour lab, he talks for 2 and a half hours and then gets mad if you dont finish lab within the time you have left. Worst instructor. Don't waste your time. He is also very anal when it comes to numbers, decimal points, and showing your work.
Not a great instructor to take pre req. classes with. Terrible at inputting assignments into Canvas. Days before the final and still the only grades input are exams. Labs are three hours long, 2/3 of the time its listening to him explain the experiment and go off topic. His lectures are waste of time. Take advantage of etc, its way more thorough!
Awful professor. Takes his job as a joke which means your grade is a joke too, doesnt teach AT ALL. 3 hour lectures and nothing valuable to being talked about the entire time. Throughout the semester only 5 things out of maybe 20 were actually posted until the day grades are due. Constantly changing things on gradebook(brings grade down)
The lectures in his class made no sense. I payed attention in every class and still had no idea what I was doing. He expects you to learn everything through ALEKS which is horrible. He will spend two hours of your lab talking about nonsense and then get mad and start yelling when you dont finish your lab in less than an hour.
Honestly, hardest class I ever had to take. I would not recommend him to anyone. He officially made me hate chemistry.
One of the hardest instructors Ive ever taken. I usually do great in classes but this was the only class I felt very lost in. I took him 2x and failed both times due to his confusing lectures. He doesnt like to teach he likes to insult you for not knowing or not paying attention. Youre going to have to work really hard to teach yourself.
You might think being a chemistry class that the professor would discuss chemistry, but not in his class! Vellandi instead prefers to lecture about getting his carpets cleaned, how to treat your waiter, and how often he ate taco bell during grad school. You will have to read the book if you want to learn anything about chemistry in his course.
Mr V is a dynamic & creative instructor. He is excellent at imparting difficult material to a novice. Engaging, fun, & relevant examples, & he's down right hilarious! He covers tested material VERY WELL. I never even opened my book. Pay attention during lab! Follow instructions! Do on-line HW! Important! Use ETC & Tutorial Ctr & you're good!
Mr. V made it clear at the start of the class that at-home dedication is required to succeed. If you dedicate your time to complete the assigned homework (ALEKS) you will have a better understanding of chemistry. I'm now in 1A and am top of my class. Don't be lazy and you will do well.
Okay he is funny. Aleks could be helpful, but if you have other classes this is not gonna help. You have to put all your time into it. It is not being lazy it means life doesnt envolve all in aleks when you have more classes and busy with other things in life. Im facing anxiety disorder for this class. Im trying but way too hard.
He gets mad when you don't understand. He also asks you questions in lab and keeps asking you until you get it right and puts you in the spot. He also gets off topic he doesn't teach that much and depend everything on Alek. He expects you to learn everything from it. He talks about his life most of the time.
As an instructor hes terrible. Good luck getting grades from labs out of him. You wont know where you stand with the class. He manages to lecture without teaching you anything you need to know for exams and labs. Little communication hes too superior, stuck in his old ways to calm down and actually teach chemistry. Self learn or fail.
A lot of this class is solving equations for pressures, balancing chemicals, conversions, etc and he will not teach on how to go about learning how to solve the math. The ETC leader basically taught the class as best to his ability. If you dont already understand chemistry then Id reconsider him as your instructor.
He was nice enough to add me to his class in the 2nd week of Spring Semester. He is nicer than his intimidating look. He knows his chemistry. You must read the book. You have all the source, you must put in effort to understand the materials in order to understand Professor Vellandi. Pay attention in lab and ALEKS is key to passing the class.
Online course as a result of COVID-19: This is what I will tell you. His ETC leader taught his class. Mr. V put out one instructional the whole semester. You have to rely on ALEKS to teach yourself otherwise. He required all tests to be taken on webcam. If you were kicked out, too bad. You had to figure out the labs yourself. Worst class ever.
I took his class online this semester(FA20) and he was horrible. He doesn't give lectures, and this is a class you need them for. The homework is a lot and he doesn't keep you updated on dates. When I would reach out for help, all I would get is an extended due date and no help. Not a good teacher for online settings.
I kid you not when I say this is the worse professor to ever take from I mean it. Not only did he not teach ANY of his students he also was very hard to get in touch with and as well harsh when you asked him any questions. I literally had to learn all the material off of YouTube. You will also not officially know what your grade is in the class.
Took them for the first half of the fall semester, I had to drop them due to a failure to teach. They constantly would change exam dates based on how convenient it was for them. There was one instance they moved the exam to a week from the date it was supposed to be, then later Tom the day it was supposed to be, moved it back with only 5 hours left
i dropped mr. Vs class bc he wont give you your grade until after the final so the entire course youll have 0 idea where you stand with the class. its all a blur bc he doesnt teach! I did retake with Mr Yates and BIG HUGE DIFFERENCE! YATES teaches his students, organized, test is based on exactly what you learn. idk why Mr V is an instructor TBH
Mr. V should not allowed to be a professor at all! Hes literally getting paid to teach his students nothing. His mentality is you either know chemistry and youll be fine or you dont and youll fail. He will not teach you any material at all. His zoom meeting are a waste of time! He just sitting there Fresno city needs to do better!!!!!!!!
There was so much HW. This is my only class I was taking and omg I couldn't finish all of it on time. Also this class was definitely a teach our self class which chemistry is not the class to do that. I will have to retake this class cause I need a C or better for nursing school. Do not take this class with this teacher. I took it fall 2021.
I see that alot of students say that Mr.V is hard to get in contact with, but for me personally he was very easy to contact. It might've been different for those who took his class in person or before I did but he made it clear how to contact him. The one thing I didn't like is how he graded labs late but other than that Mr.V is a great teacher.
I'm not a science guy but I passed. There is alot to this class. Do the homework and lab stuff and go to his office hours. He helps alot. And ETC is big too.
Boring lectures that you don’t really even learn much anyways. No point in going to class when you have to teach yourself most of the stuff anyways. He gets mad that you don’t know something. Aleks is annoying and time consuming. Avoid this teacher. Oh and I don’t even know my actual grade because he doesn’t update it.
His class is difficult and you won't know your grade until after the final exam. You will probably feel very unprepared for every exam unless you talk to the ETC or go to GRASP. He's a cool person, but not a great teacher. I noticed several people dropping the class way late into the semester. A lot of homework that you will have to teach yourself.
When I asked for help he was always there. He would even get on Zoom to answer my questions at night. I read some of the comments on here and I don't know what they are talking about. Some kept complaining about him as if he wasn't helpful. That's cap. These people just didn't want to do the work. They couldn't be bothered. It's chemistry, come on!
If you have pedagophobia, do not take his class. Communication is also a problem.
I took Mr. Vellandi TWICE. Honestly, I just didn't keep up with the homework. He's a very cool teacher and whatever you put into the class is what you'll get out of it. If easy is what you're looking for then it's not here. If you really want to actually understand chemistry I'd most definitely recommend. It's such a rewarding class.
You are practically teaching yourself because his "lessons" are the slides on canvas. The online assignments are impossible to complete when you know nothing. He expects you to do the homework then come back to lecture with any questions you may have, yet he only covers one question out of many others for the whole class period. Avoid his class.
You are teaching yourself. Lectures do not correspond with homework at all, offers not enough help, gets mad at you for not knowing everything. Stay away from this professor
If you take this class be ready to think intellectually. If you do not pay attention and read directions you will not do good. His class focuses on critical thinking and learning how to think for yourself as well as teach you chemistry, this class is not an easy A, if you want that do not take it. He is also helpful and available outside of class.
Not impressed at all by instructor. More than half of emails no response, was informed I would be failed bc of absences due to illness, even though I was passing class. Easily distracted during lectures, tbh I know more about his horses than chem. Ive taken better chem instructors in past. On flip side he seems like a fun grandpa needs to retire.
I took hybrid Chem 3A last semester and enjoy it! As long as you show up to labs and ask questions you'll do fine in his class.
Vellandi is a professor that I would stay away from if you can. You need to have an understanding of chemistry before going into the class. The lectures aren't good, you'll have to teach yourself everything, the tests are ungodly tough, homework is abundant. Like I said, avoid this instructor if you can.
I truly loved Mr. V as a person, he was a great guy but the work load was insane and if you fall behind, it is extremely tough to catch up.
I took his summer Chem 3A class He was great. There were difficult moments but I communicated my way through and because it was a 4 week course he was very understanding. and helped out the students when needed. It was a very hard class but in the end he was very helpful.
I've taken his class during the summer ,he was just there for the paycheck. His assignment are AI generated so that he doesn't have to grade them, throws a huge tantrum and called the whole class second graders , and was always 20-30 mins late to class even on exam days. I don't know why he isn't fired yet for his lack of work .WORST TEACHER EVER!
Professor Vellandi's class is intense but rewarding. The workload is heavy, but he's helpful if you engage with the material. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep.
Over assigns homework/practice quizzes. You practically teach yourself because his lectures are powerpoints from covid times. Cool guy but gets off topic during lectures, and its mostly him reading from these old slides. Gets mad at the class when they don't understand material. Don't recommend if you're taking chem for the first time.
One of my toughest class. There's a lot of homework but if you fall behind don't get discourage the homework is open til the end of the semester. This class requires effort, so as long as you do your part you can definitely pass it. Mr. V cares about his students passing so he gives us multiply opportunities for extra credit and make up work.
This class will be difficult if you don't put in the work. Pay attention to every homework assignment and all the lectures and you can easily pass. The tests are a big part of your grade which was my only problem with the class. Mr. Vellandhi overall is a cool guy who cares about your grade and he's really thorough with his lectures.
Cool guy! Professor? Not so much. His homework, labs, and lectures don't translate to exams. Exams are heavily curved (because they don't translate and most fail) and worth 60% of overall grade. Just had to show up and study outside of class A LOT more than I felt was necessary to pass this course. Basically lived in the tutorial center.
He's a fun guy... he WILL NOT teach you anything. To pass the class you need to essentially do a scavenger hunt between poorly made slides with very little information on them, and a textbook that also doesn't really cover what he's asking of you. The lectures are irrelevant to anything... like completely. Good luck teaching yourself chemistry!
I took Chem3A (hybrid) with this instructor two semester ago and he has a very snarky personality. He seem to only want to respond and help students who are white. If you're from a minorities group, he just brush you off like a scum. Funny how the two white students he helped so much got the worst to said about him on final day.
Ok so Hes a good fella like he has a great personality. But he will be tough on you when you make mistakes because majority of us taking this class will get into health care so he wants us to be very attentive and take accountability with what we do. Like trust me. Another big thing and i knew what i was getting myself into was workload...
Not my cup of tea as a professor, very funny dude. Would often get mad at us for asking him repeated questions. Only take his class if you are willing to teach yourself in this class. Did not learn anything in this class, he relied too much on our ETC leader to teach us..take someone else for chem if you can..
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this guy. If you HAVE to take this class, be ready for a workload heavier than the rest of your classes combined X2. Also be ready to teach yourself the material. Good luck.
Cool guy but not good professor. You will be teaching yourself and have 15 assignments a week, go to ETC just do it and look up Dr. Dan on youtube he will help. Tests are curved so if you fail them u probably will pass but you are teaching yourself and he's late everyday.
He's incredibly impatient and makes you feel like you're bothering him just by asking questions. He doesn't actually teach — you're basically on your own to figure out the material. Lectures are unhelpful, and there's little to no guidance. Be prepared to teach yourself everything and feel lost most of the time.
Took the 4-week summer session. He is upfront and clear about the difficulty of the course load and LISTEN. Spent every waking moment I had on this class and I'm not joking. Use Dr. Dan videos as his lecture videos tend to be drawn out.
He is very particular about how to follow instructions and lab safety but as a science major it's good lessons to implement. Lots of studying is recommended but beneficial in the long run! Main complaint is he doesn't seem to explain things well at times and you have to use other resources for more clarity on topics.
This teacher singlehandedly pushed me back another semester for graduation. His course load was too much and he would not spend any of his lecture times or lab times talking about things that were actually important. Felt like a waste of time going to his classes 3 times a week just to go home and have to teach yourself.
Just Dont, please dont
LISTEN TO ALL THE COMMENTS IT'S A POOR DECISION TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
