Not very sympathetic of first year student's needs and abilities.
Definately plays the favourites! He gave me a mediochre mark on an essay (didn't buy the argument apparently) and now I find out he's teaching the ideas I presented. If you are really political and feminist and tell him everything he wants to hear you will do fine, but he doesn't like a challenge.
VERY hard marker!! I don't feel he is teaching what the class is supposed to be "An Introduction to Literature: How to read and write effectively" he doesn't tell you HOW to do this, and marks SO hard.how are you supposed to learn?? He doesn't tell how to know what to look for and such. TOUGH class!
He definitely prefers blondes.
Olbey is a very passionate instructor. He knows his material, and he tries very hard to engage students. He is a tough marker, but you only get out of a course what you put into it. Work hard and it'll pay off. I'd definitely recommend him.
He was the one shining point of my university career. He gave me a second chance after blowing it - I would not have convocated without him. Honest, understanding and fair.
Extremely biased! Basically, you really have to feed him lines and get on his good side for things to pay off. If you challenge him with different ideas, your grade will suffer. He is very subjective with his marking and grades work based on his feelings. Neither objective or fair in marking and is sometimes very unclear in his teaching.
Brutally hard for a 200-level class. Every book he assigned us to read was about how the white man had exploited blacks, not just in Africa, but all over the world. So if you happen to be a young, white, male, you're in for a treat during his class; apparently you're responsible for all the wrongs in history.
This was a detective fiction class and professor Olbey was very knowledgeable and was always willing to explain any aspect of the texts that we had difficulty with. Yes, he did assign a lot of books to read but hey, this is an English class, so you have to expect to have to read!!
yes, he is tough and he challeges you. He is one of the few who does so. Excellent professor who taught me what universiy is about; challenging the status quo and questioning everything you're told. I wish more professors had this kind of passion. Just don't expect to coast, he makes you work for the grade.
I'm not a huge fan of dram. lit to be honest. At first I didn't like Olbey but as the semester went on, I realized he's not so bad. Tough marker (don't let his youngish appearance fool you!)so make SURE you get his help prior and during the paper-writing process. A lot of reading but it's ENGL. He's got nothing on a Dr. Miller UBST course.

Olbey's class made my day. Not only does he do a great Shakespeare, he's really passionate and animated, which makes the class a lot of fun.
ABSOLUTE DRIVEL. Avoid this guy unless you are a hot blonde.
This was a Spring course and I expected it to be tough but man the final was BRUTAL!!! I had an A- going in but come on who the hell can write 4 essays in 2 hours? I bombed it! A 4th year said it was one of the hardest tests she had taken, hello! It's a 300-level course. Loved the teacher but hard tests! Be prepared!
Spring course was tough but got through if you worked on it but final was absolutely brutal, 4 essays in 2 hours does should not be a 300 level final. way too hard of final but decent class and generally a very nice and interesting professor.
GREAT prof! Made ENGL 239 tons of fun. He expects a lot out of his essays, but if you pay attention in class, it strangely becomes easy to write 8 pages about a book. I had a strong dislike for English going into the class - I like English a lot better now. He is really helpful outside of class too - willing to sit for hours after class with you.
Hard marker. Extremely hard. He tends to think his opinion and his point of view is the correct one, so as long as you share the same view you're golden. Final was insane. 4 essays in 2 hours is not enough time. He doesn't make his expectations for papers and midterms clear ahead of time.
So, to summarize previous comments: we have an arrogant black man (egads) with a penchant for the feminist leanings of blonde bimbos and barbies . . . . Worth the price of admission.
I took Christian for speculative fiction for my first semester at the U of C. He is by far my favourite Prof teacher here. He is a hard marker BUT you can do well if you put the effort into it. When you do well you feel as though you have earned it. I plan on taking all of his classes. His passion for English is contagious!
Prof Olbey is a professional professor, if you do not do the work, he will grade accordingly but that should be expected.... He is very enthusiastic! Highly reccomended!
PS For those of you who said Prof Olbey prefers blondes, it is not true. I am a blonde and he treated me the same as everyone else, for he was a tough on me too. He treats everyone with an equal amount of respect... Saying he prefers blones is disrespectful towards him.
He was one of my favorite profs all year. His marking is not that hard if you talk to him and listen to what he wants you to do. The course was challenging and made me think and I enjoyed every minute. He can be arrogant and pretentious, but he is an english prof and that comes with the territory. One of the best english classes I've taken
This man (who still does not have a Ph.D.) only rewards students who regurgitate his own ideas. Do not attempt to use his interpretations of critical theory with a real professor because he or she will rip his inane notions apart. He came to my honour's symposium just to publicly ridicule me because he disagreed with my project's thesis.
Uggh. He picks favorites and can be demeaning to others in class. His tests are ridiculously, horribly written. Quizzes EVERY DAY on the readings. Hard marker for essays (to pass, be SUPER technical, rip apart quotes, and don't use past tense sentence construction).
This man really is an idiot. It's that simple.
I find it so funny when people blame their crappy grades and a professor's hair colour preferences. Maybe he does like blondes, maybe brunettes, I don't really care. If you think you deserved a better grade or that he was unfair, why not appeal the mark?
He is the best professor I have ever had! Challenges students but it pays off in the end. Hated english prior to this class now I am taking another class with him
Hes awesome!!!!...would def take his class again...even if its just to stare at him...sorry guys....but girls....its worth it!!!
Extremely good professor. By far my favourite. Teaches not only English, but humility and manners needed for the Uni life. I have not experienced him picking favourites. He challenges everyone in the class and makes you a better writer if you are willing to learn.
He really was an excellent prof, everything was ahrd at the begining but he is a prof tat is there to help his students learn. he was great, and helped me to better appreiate english. my marks werent a's but i really got something out of this class
This class made me want to leave the business school and become an english major. AWESOME!
Olbey was amazing. I came into the class hating poetry but walked away with a greater interest. He challenges the students, but isn't that the whole reason we're at university? I paid to learn something, and I did. His papers and tests were tough, but they taught me how to be a more successful english student. I would take a dozen more classes!
An amazing prof! He's very well read and though his exams and essays are a little challenging, it's definitely worth it! I went in thinking that this would be an easy credit course, and I did do fairly well, but it wasn't w/o a lot of hard work. Olbey pushes you, but he encourages you on the way, and does a fine job getting you through till the end
I can't say he was a bad prof, he knows his stuff, was unbiased, and passionate about English. But I don't think he deserves the title of best prof ever. When getting help he talks more at you than with you, he marks extremely hard (don't expect an A at all), and I didn't really feel he engaged me as much as many other passionate profs I have had
I liked Olbey quite a bit. He was always eager to help, but as already stated he marks brutally hard. He is certainly passionate about the material and engaging towards the class, but no easy grades here.
He good and though but overall you learn a lot
Very good lecturer, he is creative in his delivery of material and is a very critically adept reader of the texts he lectures on.Exams are easy if you can think on your feet. Very closed minded when it comes to essays, follow his instructions to the letter and do not attempt any bold readings, reword what he he says and you'll get an A easily.
great teacher, but frequent required readings!
The man is nice enough but he is an absolute student-boning machine! Watch out girls the guy has no shame and a thing for women more than half his age.
Haha, totally true, he thinks he's quite the Casanova! The class list is essentially a list of girls he thinks he can sleep with. Word to the wise, don't go to his office alone, things get awkward fast.
I had Eng239 a couple of yrs ago with Prof Olbey. I am a female student myself, what I observed at the time was that he was helpful and respectful to everyone! Let's grow up and stop giving unfair names to others, just to try to jeopardise their career! Future students, my recommendation to you! He is a great prof for literature!!!
If you just want to audit this course, his lectures could be a good choice. If you need to take it for credit, however, you should avoid his class like the plague if you value your GPA. He hates giving out A's, marks subjectively, and uses his own messed up system for calculating final grades. Also, I found him unhelpful and actually outright
Arrogant, subjective, biased and libidinous; he definitely has a tendency to favour the attractive blondes in his class. My friend and classmate was one of them. He was constantly ogling her and demonstrated resentment towards me because she and I were friends. He is a skilled orator but other than that, there is nothing special about this guy. AVO
Ugghhh.. He is too intimidating. I felt very uncomfortable by the way he stared at me. He is an African descendant, and may be its a coincident that he teaches topics that include African history. NOT RECOMMENDED!
I have to say, out of all the profs in u of c., prof olbey scares the hell out of me. He is soo ignorant as others have already said. I feel very uncomfortable in his class. He was useless, in helping me. Overall worst prof
I took 231 with Olbey a couple of years ago he was very clear in his expectations, and gave us examples of A papers. He was very approachable and helpful during office hours (not intimidating at all).He was a hard marker but fair, show enthusiasm and interest and that alone will earn you a good grade.Dont listen to others this is uni not highschool!!!
I can't say much, because Prof Olbey was so arrogant. He stares at you, as if you did something wrong, and makes u feel uncomfortable. On the plus side, i liked going to his class because he was kinda hot!!
TERRIBLE PROF. TERRIBLE CLASS. Avoid it at all costs if you want to do well. I really love english, it's my major, but he ruined it for me.
I read these reviews before taking this professor's class, however I tried to not let other's comments jade my experience. Now it is crystal clear to me this professor's marking strategy is highly based on if A) You are female. B) You are attractive.
This guy is a narcissist pig. If you're an attractive female you will almost certainly get an A in the course, otherwise expect a maximum of a B.
This prof is so full of himself and all he ever talks about is female agency. He'll seem nice until refund drop deadline and then he becomes impossible to impress unless you're attractive and female. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I used to hate english but it was required. he made it livable and after his class i dont think its that bad
WORST. PROF. EVER. Do not take this class. Olbey is arrogant and oblivious to students needs. He actually takes pride in failing people just for fun. School would be a better place if he wasn't in it.
I had ENGL 231 with Professor Olbey a few years ago. I thought he was really enthusiastic & definitely knew what he was talking about. He engaged the class in awesome discussions & graded fairly. He was very helpful during office hours or by appointment. Im a brunette female and did very well in his course; you just have to put effort in. Great pro
continued from the post below. He was a great prof. My comment saying that I'm a brunette female has relevance, since in previous comments, people have said that you needed to be a blonde female to do well in the course. This is not true. He marks according to how well you do on your exams and essays-not based on looks! Definitely take his class!!
Ewwwwwww.....Totally hard marker, arrogant, thinks he's the best thing ever and thinks his class is the only one you're taking, quizzes you every other day!...AVOID AT ALL COSTS, he will make ur days miserable
Olbey made me drop English as my major. Has no problem failing based on personal convictions, such as your own opinions or behaviour. Class is mandatory. Like said below, audit this class would be great his lectures are decent but his grading and attitude are too much to have your GPA rely on. Withdrew and so glad I did.
Dr. Olbey is very interesting to listen to, his lectures are pretty fun but manditory. He is a helpful prof and available for questions if needed, however his standards are a bit high and he is sort of a hard marker but if you do what he asks for and attend class it shouldnt b hard to pull off the gr you are looking for. I hate english and got a B
Very helpful during office hours, helped me get an A in this class. Final group project was fun. Tough marker but I don't see what everyone's problem with him is, I would take him again.
I took a class with Olbey back in spring session of 2009 and I really enjoyed it, so I took 340 with him. Big mistake. He has CHANGED in the past two years, his lectures are narcissistic and unrelated and the grading/workload are RIDICULOUS. He seems to take pleasure in seeing his students struggle. Dropped the class. I DO NOT recommend him.
Olbey's lectures are great. The time flies because of the discussion he is able to facilitate. He is a very tough marker but is really clear in what his expectations are. Going to class is mandatory and your grade will reflect your attendance. A lot of people in class had issues with him but I appreciate his approach, it made me a stronger student.
Didnt do the best in his class but he's enthusiastic and really clear in what he wants. Speak up in class and you'll do alright. Be warned: This class had a REALLY high work load!
great teacher!
I really loved his enthusiasm and my 3 hour classes always flew by. However, he is a hard marker! I appreciated it though, I felt like I learned a lot from his class and would take a class with him again!
I had no problems with him until the end of the first semester where he basically called me a poor student to my face, which I sure as heck am not. His lectures started out alright but by the end they were painful to sit through, he's completely repetative and has no original ideas. His grading is ridiculou; do EXACTLY as he says to do well.
The best English professor! He is crystal clear! Always helps as much as you need! Assignments are not that complicated! Midterm and Final were very simple and reasonable! If you are a person that is not good at literature take this class with him! I was attending the classes with enthusiasm!
Passionate about subject, can be a hard marker. No one scored higher than a B+ on the first essay. Took during spring, tons of reading. Quiz every single class. You will do well if you follow his instructions exactly. A little bit rigid in terms of office hours and email. Gives partial marks on quizzes. Showed sampled essay examples that got an A.
WORST PROF EVER. Attendance is MANDATORY (even tho WE paid for the class) You can't leave early if your sick cuz he'll make a spectacle of you in front of the class. Marking is terrbile - .25 marks, .65 marks. RIDICULOUS. I've never failed a uni test and I'm in 4th year. He made me drop this class AVOID THIS ASS. Treats you like high school student
Pretty difficult marker! Beware of his midterm. He throws things out from no where!
He appears to take pleasure in failing students. "Self-absorbed" is a huge understatement - he is a total narcissist. I could handle this if he was good prof, but he is terrible. Class time is wasted on unacademic class discussion rather than preparing us for the exam. He is belittling and truly unfair. He ruined English for me.
The person below doesn't know what he/she is talking about! We only had discussions about the texts we read. If you read assigned texts, and come to every class, you can get almost a 100% of the quizzes which are worth 25%. Pretty straightforward.
I had to teach myself the entire course up until now. Every class was a quiz, and then marking the quiz for the remainder. Lets just say DID NOT LEARN ANYTHING from him. His 'lecturing' was reading passages from the textbook. Not very impressed. Hopefully next semester is better, as it is a full year course.
Very hard marker. Majority of classes were spent doing quizzes and then marking them. Felt I could've done the same just by reading the textbooks myself.
Not sure why I paid for a class that requires reading a text then be tested on it without being taught and then having the same assigned readings re-read to me in class. He is a painfully hard marker and expects regurgitation not understanding which is not the purpose of University,in my opinion. After 3 years of English classes this is the worst.
Rigorous readings and daily quizzes. Most of the "teaching" was done reading printouts straight from the paper or reciting passages from a textbook. More or less a self-taught class--be on your toes because he's not going to go out of his way to help you out if you're struggling!
This course has fun projects at the end. The rest of the course was spent doing quizzes and marking them. He assigned readings, then you would be tested on them and his "way" of teaching was marking the quizzes- no discussion of the theorists was given prior their testing. Very hard marker. Do not expect to get a reply via email.
Worst prof I've had ever. Chastises the students he doesn't like publicly. Seems to blame anyone isn't blonde or black for the oppression from centuries ago, and I'm a minority myself! Isn't there to help, just to really make you understand that "Hey, haha, you don't get it". Also only wants you to write as he thinks. God forbid you think yourself.
I regret going to his class for as long as I did. He is horribly condescending towards students and not approachable whatsoever. The material was tested on before it was taught and expected to be memorized almost word for word from the text. Go out of your way to avoid any of his classes.
He's not great at all. He takes 5 weeks to mark a 3 page assignment, he will take off whole letter grades for misusing a comma once (seriously, I'm not overstating this)! He doesn't help much, he likes to make the class all about his interpretations, not yours! If you have a full course load, take someone else's class, it's not worth the time.
I read all the texts, studied hard, and I'm a good student when it comes to English, but this guy made it into a discussion all about his views, not your own. If you like to just listen to what he says and regurgitate it on an exam then go ahead, but if you like to be more engaged with material then stay far away from his classes. Poor experience!
If you're good at following strict formulas for writing and prefer regurgitating the profs ideas instead of bringing your own to the table, go for it. Talks a lot about feminism, but in a really one dimensional way, which is kind of annoying because feminism is so complex and intersectional. Enthusiastic teacher, but only about his interpretations.
I don't really know what these other people are talking about...Olbey was a good Prof who was VERY clear about his expectations on how he wanted the essays written. As long as you follow his format, you'll do well. He does accept other opinions even if they differ from his own. Those other people must not have supported their opinions very well...
Olbey is without a doubt the worst prof I have been exposed to in my post secondary education. He is critical and dry in class discussions which makes going to class a chore and NEVER responds to emails. He changed due dates for things many many times and neglected to hand back assignments and drafts when he said he would or even by term end.
Had him come in to replace another professor halfway through the term. The class discussions are pretty good, but don't take this class if you're looking for an easy elective. He is very clear about his expectations, though.
Prof Olbey is EXREMELY passionate about his work. His interest in his job will definitely keep you awake if you are willing to listen to his thoughtful interpretations. He is crystal clear about directions, provides lots of supplementary documents. Follow his thought process and extend on that in your writing. He appreciates participation. Easy A!
Encourages class discussion, SUPER SLOW assignment marking and return, hard marker but is clear as to what he expects from you, tends to fall behind in the scheduled reading discussions due to his involement in discussing the material in class. - Take that as you will.
Olbey is the worst instructor I have ever had. I've had him for 2 classes (as a replacement prof in year long required classes). Olbey marks non majors differently, and has stated this in classes, English majors cannot get an A in his classes. condescending and archaic in his methods. Once told my class that there is no future in English careers
Prof. Olbey is an excellent teacher. He is extremely passionate about his work. He does respond to emails, and I find him to be rather helpful. He is a hard marker but he shows you what to do and how to do it. This is university, students are expected to pull their weight, not be spoon fed. Therefore if you work hard you will be rewarded.
Olbey is tough but fair. He's very knowledgeable and more than willing to help, and he expects a certain level of responsibility from his students. I honestly think anyone complaining about him needs to grow up, if you put in the work Olbey is a great prof. He was only late marking assignments cause he had to teach extra courses that term.
Prof Olbey had his TAs grade our essays. The TAs are fair and aligned with his rubric and grading wants. Olbey is a very interesting professor and his discussions are very thought-provoking. I loved his class! The work is tough, but if you try hard, you'll get a good grade.
Best prof ever
SO easy. Take his class.
He's a really chill guy. All you really need to do is attend class. Easy A and definitely a GPA booster.
Easiest english prof by far.
I've taken two of his classes. He definitely improved his teaching skills and has become a more fair marker. Despite what people have said about him, he's a great prof who actually cares about how well you do.
You need to make sure you go to all classes and have your book read. The quizes he has will be based on small details from the book he assigns that week. If you do well on the quizes and engage in the discussion in class- as well as follow his ideas and way of writing, you will do well in this class. Interesting class, just get on his good side.
Best Prof. ever. A+
Best professor ever. A+
Extremely difficult marker. I always loved English until having him as a teacher. I worked very hard all semester, yet my grades did not reflect this. I do not agree with his marking system, not out of spite, but due to the extremely high expectations. Would not recommend unless you have a strong passion and dedication for English
A very intelligent and engaging prof, with really interesting material covered in lecture- however, essays were marked very hard, expectations felt a little too high for a first year engl course. However, prof was approachable and gave helpful feedback - but definitely not a GPA booster by any means.
Professor Olbey is a very straightforward professor. Lectures can seem to drag on but if you keep up with the reading and take notes in class, you will be fine. Essays are marked fairly hard but the final is easy. If you put in any effort at all and obviously don't plagiarize, you will be fine.
Awesome professor. However, you need to really pay attention in class and extend those ideas by talking to him during office hours to really succeed. He appreciates the student-teacher interaction, so be sure to engage in class discussions with ideas and comments that resonates with his own.
Professor Olbey is an amazing, insightful and intelligent professor! He marks essays very hard but really cares and pushes you to be your absolute best! There are times where you'll want to quit but never give up! He is pretty clear with expectations, go to class and even if you don't get the grade, you'll learn a lot about the world and life.
Extremely hard marker. Bottom line - if you value your GPA, do not take English with Professor Olbey.
Hard Marker and Critical Prof. Do not take this class to boost your GPA
Absolutely awful. Repeat what he says in lecture back in your essay and you'll be fine. He loves to hear himself talk.
Nice prof, and interesting class. Brutal marker though.
Amazing professor, lectures were a combination of stimulating class discussions and Olbey briefly explaining context of each book we read. Always available regarding his office hours. Work hard and you can earn a good mark, however be warned he is a tough marker!
Great Prof, one of my favourites to date. He really engages his classes well through his lectures. Cares about his students, and is very approachable. He is a difficult marker, but if you take notes on his lectures, he sets you up to succeed if you're willing to put in the work And show up to lectures.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Rude. Workload is over the top. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Professor Olbey is a fair instructor. Classes can be a little bit boring but if you use examples from your class notes in your essays it doesn't go unnoticed. Participating in class and just showing up goes a long way with him. The quizzes add up so be sure to stay on top of your reading.
Very tough marker, but a very good prof. Actually cares about his students.
Cool guy, expects a lot but good grades are available you just have to work for them.
Expect random marks taken off on tests without explanation. He formed our group for a project, but when we went to ask if we could have a group evaluation, he refused because he thought we would pick on one person. So this guy basically got a free grade for doing absolutely nothing. Running out of time (50 min) isn't a fair reason to lose marks.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS FOR ENGL 201.. I recommend different prof. We had to read 6 different books by every one or two weeks.
Guide to a good grade: read all the books in time for the 2 week quizzes. Spark notes won't help. Speak up in his class; contribute ideas you think he'd agree with. Go to him during office hours and share ideas about your upcoming paper. Take note of different ideas he discusses during lectures. If you use them in the final exam, you're golden.
Hardest marker ever. He doesn't even give good feedback. Also very rude. Avoid him if you can!!
Alright prof but very hard tests!!
Olbey knows how to run a lecture, but he's a dubious marker and the grades given out aren't quite what's really deserved by the class. When asked for help he constantly refers back to "the manual" even if you've religiously read the manual while writing the assignment and followed exactly what it says, and yet still somehow get a bad grade.
Horrible! Quizzes aren't fair at all, and have nothing to do with literature interpretation! Don't take it.
don't expect a good grade if you aren't ready to participate in class strong favoritism all the books follow the same theme , super repetitive consistent marker hard to get out of a hole if you get a single C overall, has killed my interest at all in English no desire to attend classes as he often goes on goes off on random tangents
Professor Olbey is one of those profs who decides to only value the opinions of his favourite students. If you do not attend even just a few classes, he will notice and pick on you. Extremely hard marker, but it's hard to get a good grade because he posts NOTHING on D2L (not even assignments). The tests are designed to fail students. Don't take 201
He was a very interesting and enthusiastic teacher, however it seemed that he relied more on the textbook than his own teaching ability. When posed with a trouble spot he would just tell you to refer to the textbook without anymore clarity. If you work really hard at the class the grades will come but it is not a GPA booster.
ENGL 201 was the hardest course I took as a first year, above BIOL 241 and MATH 249. You absolutely cannot bs this course: the grading TA's are merciless and they will tear your essays apart. However, if you put in the work, Olbey will recognize it and reward you. Read thoroughly, PARTICIPATE, and memorize the little writing manual book.
Tough grader and not a GPA booster. He treats the writing manualtextbook as the Bible. He is helpful in his office hours but he keeps mentioning manual which at some point got annoying because I want his opinion and feedback and not the book. All in all, take his class if you must and follow the manual like your life depended on it.
Good god, avoid this one unless you absolutely love English and reading. His course is set-up so if you aren't interested you'll struggle. The amount of reading assigned is horrendous, I couldn't believe it. Beware of his lack of communication. He moved tests and added content without warning, and takes marks off for wrong answers.
Easy to understand, and very helpful. Other than that his classes and concepts and ideas were interesting.
He's a nice prof, very intelligent and thought provoking. You do have to read a lot of novels in his class and the TAs that mark the essays are tough markers and can be unfair. You have to put a decent amount of work into his class, but he's not brutal like everyone is portraying him to be. Good prof overall, I liked him. He dresses nicely too ;)
I really did not enjoy this class, although the teacher comes across like he will help you tremendously, he won't. His marking is not the great, if sentences are not identical to the text book he will dock marks. Definitely not an easy class. Would recommend switching out.
Extremely unclear and condescending. If you asked a question, he'd make sure to make a joke about it in front of the class and give a completely unrelated answer. Assigns an insane amount of reading, and his quizzes are crazy specific. Extremely tough grader, once received an F on a paper because it was "Really nice work, but a little too general."
Great guy! First time I went to him with a dumb question, I got a condescending dumb answer. Went back 2 more times asking for real help and I got it, he even bumped up my mark for me. If you don't care about this class, you will not do well, but if you show an honest interest and read the books, you will do just fine! I liked his class very much!
Quizzes will ask you about the tiniest detail in a 350 page book so basically you'd better memorize them. Very condescending prof. The class is based on his own political and social opinions rather than english and he will give you a bad mark with little explanation as to why.
Overall great guy. If you work hard you'll get a good grade. But you really need to work for it. That means all the readings and especially participate in class discussions . Quizzes are very specific but if you read the books attentively they're easy. Not a GPA booster if you don't have the time to put into it.
Absolute pleasure being in Professor Olbey's class. He is by no means an easy grader but if you participate just an ounce, and follow his instructions, you will do well. In my experience he was very clear with how he wanted the written components to be done, it's an absolute must that you follow the writing book to a T if you want to succeed.
This man is a tough grader. He would like mark essay absolutely based on the textbook. The quizzes is too hard to get high mark because he would minus mark of wrong answer based on how many you get right. Cannot understand why he said YOU CANNOT GUESS! SO many books need to buy and read!
Professor Olbey is brilliant, passionate about what he is teaching, and gives great explanations of assignment expectations. He gives everyone a chance to succeed, whether you're an English major or not. Stay on top of reading and listen and take notes in class and you should get a good grade.
Repetitive but mildly engaging lectures. VERY hard marker, high expectations which are very unclear because he doesn't give out outlines for the assignments. If you miss one or two classes, you'll fail the exams because he picks random days to detail what will be on them. Keeps you late after class and doesn't care about first years.
Olbey is a love him or hate him prof. He is very intelligent and brings a lot to the classroom to share, which makes for very interesting lectures. A lot of students forced into the class by their degree requirements neglect to do the readings and attend class, and suffer on his tests and quizzes. If you put in the effort he asks, you will get an A
If you go to class and participate he will bump your grade up by a lot! He marks short stories much nicer then essays
I am taking his course this semester. He is not a responsible person! January almost past, he still doesn't post his course in d2l! He told us he would post it on Thursday, but on Thursday's class, he said he didn't have time and asked us to wait until this Saturday. However, Sunday almost gone, d2l still has nothing! And his first novel is long!
Olbey has great inputs to offer in the novels that we read. English is one of my few classes that has helped me with my other classes in university, because Olbey pushed me to probe into a more analytical way of perceiving life. Great lectures and funny guy! Keep up the good work.
Olbey's lectures are good, but he has a strange approach to talking about novels. He does extremely close readings of the first 50 or so pages and kind of runs out of time talk about the rest of the book. His multiple choice tests are tough and there are plot details that weren't discussed in class, so read the novels closely.
Olbey is not a great prof, he expects a level of reading that is impossible to accomplish when you have four other classes to worry about, and he tends to get mad if you haven't done the readings. Then he takes an entire semester to mark your assignments when it was promised to be done a month ago... hypocritical if you ask me
Prof. Olbey is a great prof. He expects you to close read the novel right away, but other than that he's very clear with what he expects from his students. Participation matters in this class! It helps when you need extensions for the long assignment. Also, take notes while you're discussing the novels in class. Definitely will help for the final.
I was 17 when I took this class. I remember going to his office and being very uncomfortable on 2 incidences. 1) he suggested I name my paper "Spank Me Harder" 2) he made an unusual body movement and said "I'm just trying to get into my young Asian girl mindset". 10 yrs later and now a working professional, I still can't believe this happened...
4, 300+ page books to read, right after eachother, no time to take another class, doesnt post anything online, the week of the test he tells you what it is even on, you wont know how much any of your assignments are worth until the end of the class, will not respond to emails asking for him to do his job Ridiculous, looks like I will be retaking
Dr. Olbey is a very engaging professor. His expectations are high, so make sure you read everything (even though there's a lot). His tests are designed so reading novel summaries or watching the movies will not work. While he doesn't explicitly give participation marks, he was more lenient when grading my work after I started participating.
He is a very good instructor. Has a high level of attention to detail
Like many of you I did my absolute best to avoid Olbey. I was terrified to receive a GPA killer of a grade. He's infamous for being a difficult marker which I won't deny but if you put in the work, use your brain (critically think), and yes re reading some material it pays off. Olbey is one of the better profs at UofC if you give him a chance.
Hard work really pays off in this class. Even though it is true that he marks hard, if you put in the time and effort, there is no way you will get below a B. He also marks short stories easier than a formal essay, so keep that in mind.
I'm a science person, but for an English class, this was surprisingly not bad. He was a very fair prof, and made his expectations clear. I found him very difficult to get ahold of. He marks easier on short stories and group projects than for the essays. I got a B+ without completely reading either novel, so would be easy to do better.
He is very unexpected, and definitely a tough grader. I thought I will get 110 percent in the final but I got 60 percent. don't take any course with him.
Christian Obey is the worst professor i've had at the university. I was completely self taught through the entire course, instead of teaching us how to write an essay he made us buy a novel about reading and writing, as if time falls from the sky so Ihave to read the novel for the class and also read another book to tell me how to read and write??
Does not use electronic resources (D2L, E-mail, ect.) Assignment-handouts are riddled with spelling & grammatical errors. Answers to questions in-class are convoluted and unclear. Only ever wants to discuss feminism and gender-issues in-class. Very patronizing. Is biased against essays, would prefer you choose his "creative projects". Do not take.
Would not recommend. He gives quizzes almost weekly from 400pg novels that you're expected to finish in that time frame on top of your other courses. Unclear with his instructions, condescending when you ask questions and gives you answers that's as good as not giving one, which is highly ironic considering the fact that he's an English professor.
For a class with no pre-req's, the material/expectations were pretty high level. I realize it's a senior course, but I read all of the short stories/novels, only missed 3 lectures in the semester, and seriously struggled on the midterm. I wouldn't say Olbey is a horrible prof but he is a bit vague on assignments and expects a lot of committment.
One of the hardest markers around - really expects a lot out of his students. For a class that was for non-majors, this class was a lot harder than I anticipated. Good lecturer who is great at public speaking, but I found that he was more willing to only discuss his opinion on certain things, not other ideas students brought up.
Most Passive agressive Prof. If your phone rings on a test everyone gets marks off. awfully brutal.
Detective fiction was great with Olbey. I was originally warned that he hated tech, but clearly this was his fun class, he just loved our discussions and didn't seem to care about laptops. Easy tests, interesting books, and easy essays as long as you're interested in detective fiction, because there are 5 novels to read!
He wasn't a bad guy he challenges you to do well and expects to see specific things was a tough grader but his scale was lowered and only needed an 80 for an A-. Did pretty well all year except for the final, he seemed to have marked harder without letting anyone know. Everyone I asked did considerably worse on the final and it lowered their grade.
I'm in my 3rd year, of the 5 courses I took fall semester this was the most work and the toughest. I read all books, attended all classes. Olbey is an extremely tough grader, and gives marks such as 1.82/2 which shaves off grades unnecessarily. Very slow grader, hard to get ahold of, expectations clear but difficult to fulfill. Would not recommend.
Was a very tough marker and brought my mark down drastically. Would avoid him. Does not reply to emails and will give rude replies back when you ask questions in person.
If you participate and go to every class you'll do well. He definitely has his favourites and grades them easier than others. He is a very tough grader and usually does not have very clear grading criteria. If you talk to him about your papers he gives good feedback, but you won't get any unless you go and talk to him.
Olbey was a good prof, and he made the material in each novel we read easy to understand. This is an English course, so there is a lot of required reading, and essays and tests to ensure your comprehension of the knowledge. Olbey was funny, and tried very hard to relate the subject matter to things that affected university students.
WOW. He is the worst professor I have ever met of my 4years at U of C. Not only he is known to be a tough marker, he doesn't know why he gives out unreasonable grades and rude feedbacks. He said I was very good, had an interesting topic, and that he enjoyed reading my essay, but gave me a C+- according to him a C+ is a good grade. AVOID HIM.
worst prof ever. Avoid at all costs. Brought my GPA down drastically. I have A- in all of my other classes this one i finished with a C.
Take very detailed notes and do NOT skip class. He will basically tell you everything you need to know for the tests. Every word that escapes his mouth is important. You'll do well if you pay attention and study your notes. The textbook was $20 and all novels studied can be found cheap on Kindle. Overall a great course-- my class studied satire.
prof olbey is a very dedicated professor, but one needs to work really hard, his feedback is very effective.
He is impossible to get a hold of through email, d2l, and even through office sometimes. He grades really tough. His exams are tough as well. You are expected to read 5 300paged books each in one week. Too much reading if you are in more classes. Honestly I would not take the professor again
Prof Olbey is very passionate about English, meaning he has very high expectations. Attendance (implicitly) matters. The tests are straight forward, but there is a lot of reading and essays are marked hard. Definitely not a GPA booster.
Loved his class! It can be tough but if you attend and do the readings you should have no problem getting an A. Super fun prof who was quite funny.
Go to class, get on his good side, be friendly towards him and you'll get a good mark. You don't even have to participate that much but it helps.
As long as you show up to class take notes of the things he says (everything he says is important!), do your readings (around 4-5 books) and show engagement through your eyes (don't need to participate) its an easy course. There is 1 test that is taken straight from a reading guide, 2nd exam is from the books, 2 papers, and then a open assignment
Great instructor! Very clear about his requirements and expectations. Funny for an English prof. yet serious about learning and teaching. I would most definitely take his class again. Very insightful, life altering experience. A prof. who really knows his stuff and shares his life experiences with you, to highlight his points, to reenforce it.
Very passionate but I think that his reading expectations for a spring course were a bit much (5 novels, 1 study guide), especially when he did not post anything on the d2l shelf until the day after the first lecture. Fair marker if you put in the work, but you do need to be a bit extra because he does not use a clear criteria of what he wants.
Olbey is a great prof in general, engaging and very knowledgeable. The lecture portion of this class is super interesting. The problem is with the tests / assignments. He is a hard marker, doesn't like to give out more than a couple As and believes the class average should reflect a C-/C. This class at best could be classified as an "easy B/B-."
Took this class because I had a interest in the subject but we waste time with class input which leads to us falling behind. Do not take as a GPA booster. Probably my worst class this semester, although I put in a lot of work in to making notes and attending 9:30 lectures. RIP Plus he does not post notes, so if you miss class you are screwed
He marks essays and written exams extremely hard and believes the class average should be around a C (65 percent). He also gives extremely vague instructions for all written assignments. Definitely has his favourite students and hands out marks accordingly. This class will destroy your GPA, avoid this class if you are looking for good grades.
Not a good prof. Going against his opinion on texts lowers marks on tests and essays. Hard marker, letures are disorganized and messy, with no clear deadlines on how much to read of a text. No notes posted online, and only covers the first 50 pages of a 700-page novel clearly. Does not respond to emails at all, 2hr once a week office hours only
English is a hard class no matter what. However, Olbey is very clear with his expectations and will clearly outline them, follow them and you will receive a decent grade. He allows puts a lot of value on participation so make an effort to answer a few questions in class or visit him in office hours.
You need to study for the tests and use the textbook reading manual thing. He is kind of a tough marker so if you do badly on the assignments just go talk with him during the office hours and your grade will increase dramatically. I was struggling early but managed to pull myself up near the end. Overall he is a good prof and a nice, funny guy.
Nice and intelligible but tests were unreasonably hard. Doesn't write or post notes, just lectures of the head and everything he says or mentions is important even if it doesn't appear to be. Doesn't mark very hard on assignments, tests are just very specific to class lectures so write everything down.
Get ready to read and participate in class. He is very engaging, helpful and wants his students to succeed. His class was very enjoyable. Definitely a tough grader, not an easy A.
Prof Olbey is a really tough marker and enjoys making the class average a C. His lectures are interactive and sometimes useful as you must show up to get a good grade.
Absolutely terrible prof. Seems like a nice guy but is very passive aggressive toward students and is an incredibly hard marker. He only gives good grades to those who share the exact same view as him and produce it on assignments.
He has fantastic lectures and I loved the discussions in class about the novels and loved all but one of the novels we read! His reading quizzes are very random though, you won't have a clue of what will be on them honestly and he's a tough marker but you learn a lot about writing, it did help me with writing for other classes a lot
Don't take if you're just looking for an easy English option. Olbey makes you work for it. You need to have at least some interest in English because that will motivate you to show up to lectures. People thought they could skip class, but his facilitated discussions in class were key for doing well on the final exam (worth 30%).
Very unreasonable marking standards, and not very understanding towards students. He's not very clear about what he wants in assignments until after they're already due.
I have never loved English class, but Prof. Olbey really made this class enjoyable. Whats most important is understanding expectations and following through on them. So many students fail to understand that he lays everything out early on in the year! He is also a fantastic speaker and so his classes are very enjoyable!
Likes to play favorites, but essays are pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class and read the books. I found the tests to be harder than the essays because they're written response on paper and he expects you to be very thorough and memorize a lot of stuff. But it's an easy B if you read the books and go to class.
Dr. Olbey was one of the best profs I've had. Dr. Olbey is passionate and professional, and clearly outlines what he expects you to know in lectures. He is extremely helpful if you go to him for extra help with essays and exams. His option for a creative final project was fun, but make sure you have the essay to back it up. Easy on the eyes, too.
Professor Olbey is one of the best english teachers I've ever had. He gives super clear outlines of what he wants in his essays and assignments and great feedback to improve on the next one. He cares about attendance and doing the readings, so make sure you go to class and read all the material.
Random quizzes, a lot of reading, and a hard marker. He has his mind set on what he wants and if you cannot reach that your grade will be low. He has lots of expectations but doesn't tell you the major things of an essay he wants until you hand it in. If you share the same view around his class you will be favoured.
I loved English before Dr Olbey. However, when he designed an English course with tests based on memorization rather than interpretation or understanding, essays marked subjectively against an objective rubric, and a focus more on social issues than on literature, I couldn't figure out if I had mistakenly stepped into biology or current events.
Professor Olbey is a really good Prof. He knows what he is talking about and he picks good stories for his class to read. Sometimes he is very opinionated and expects you to have the same opinion as him
Really outlined what his expectations were and what you had to do to get a good grade. Attendance marks were an easy 5% which really helped. Don't rely on Sparknotes, etc. for the reading quizzes and try to participate. Oh, and he marks easier on short stories.
He has made the achievable for non-major students. Always on top of his back and knows how to make the students work for there grade. He was always prepared for the lectures and made them interesting and brought up new ways of thinking. He does consider attendance and give marks for attending his class. Quizzes, Final Exam, Assignments are there.
Very engaging professor and is passionate about what he teaches. Too much reading.
horrible prof. Guy seems to care more about hitting the gym than helping his students succeed. Aims for a C class average and very unclear instructions.
His lectures have no structure - he literally just talks about whatever pops into his head, and it's difficult to take notes. He sets far too much reading for his weekly quizzes, and I don't think it's right to be tested way more on memorisation than actual analysis and thought in an English class. He's an EXTREMELY harsh marker and just annoying.
Dr. Olbey's criteria for all writing assignments are very complicated for no damn reason. His lectures are scattered and he does not have any real sympathy for his students. If you disagree with him, good luck with your C- and dropped GPA. I would not recommend him for the English department or anyone for that matter. Worst prof I have ever had.
Expects way too much out of his students. You need to be able to read his mind to do well on his tests and papers. Has little sympathy for his students when they need help. Avoid him if you can.
good luck if you want anything higher than a C. weekly quizzes with the trickiest questions and he goes off on tangents majority of the class. marks for attendance but you cant get your classmates to sign for you because he gets to know your name. will not take another class with him. definitely likes sports and makes sure everyone knows it.
Buddy sucks. This class had more work than all of my other classes combined....(A quiz every week, marks for attendance, 2 small essays, 1 large essay, midterm and a final) Pretty much tells you that you need to read the textbook and then expects you to read his mind. The highest mark for the second short essay in our class was 79... STAY AWAY!!!!!
For ENGL 201 he was a decent professor. Good class to take if you enjoy reading and exploring different themes throughout the books he assigns. He has high expectations for his students but I think it's only so we push ourselves. Made me realize how much I enjoy reading and English in general. Quizzes are extremely easy if you read the books.
I haven't been in a class where I was unaware of how to succeed. Instructions for the assignments were unclear and the feedback was hard to interpret. The lectures are also poorly structured and hard to learn from, as he rambles for most of it. It's hard to tell if he wants you to succeed or if he wants to trick you into getting questions wrong.
You must cater to his preference when you write, but other than that his lectures get pretty dull when you just go over the book you've already read. He is a smart prof and you feel like your education is in good hands because of it. I would probably take another course with him even though the load was heavy.
This is the second class I've taken with this prof. If you show up you get easy attendance marks, plus his lectures are filled with important info for quizzes & exams. He gives the option of creative finals & staggers due dates, ultimately, he is passionate & loves to discuss opossing views and opinions. He's a fair marker, if you put in the work.
I was hesitant to take this course based off most of these reviews. But I think he's a fair marker, and you can do well on the quizzes/ tests as long as you actually do the readings, pay attention in class, and take notes. If you are taking this in the spring, I would caution against taking another course with it because there is a lot of reading.
Olbey is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, however class with him was consistently frustrating. He is stubborn and unwilling to admit when he makes mistakes--for example, on a quiz he made an incorrect answer the correct one on the answer key & refused to fix it when confronted by the class. Overall not worth the stress
Best prof Ive ever had. Very intelligent and brilliant instructor. Knows his subject area throughly and knows how to deliver it. Lectures are interesting if you take the time to attend classes and work for your grades, instead of complaining and expect a free pass. Always available during office hours and goes beyond the call of duty to help us.
Great prof, loves what he does. There are LOTS of readings and difficult essays in his class. But he adds bonus quizzes etc to help out. Very hard grader and attendance is mandatory.
Lectures were quite dry, but extremely easy to follow. He was also very clear what he expected from essays. There was a lot of reading, as well as his reading quiz questions were extremely specific. You need to pay a lot of attention to what you are reading (the novels) in order get good marks on the quizzes.
He contradicts what he says he wants and what he grades on for essays. Olbey with say he wants creativity, but only talk about the same two things on all the books; in my case it was mainly gender (specifically how women are treated in a minority setting) and on occasion race. He was clear that all he wanted to see on an essay.
In had Dr. Olbey for English 231 in 2001. Thats right, 19 years ago. It may have even been his first year with the department. I honestly still have all of the novels we used in his class and clearly recall the themes and ideas he exposed me to. What a long lasting impact he had on my thinking. Thank you, Dr. Olbey.
Overall he is a solid choice for a English prof. 20%-35% of your grade will come from easy(ish) quizzes, exam, and attendance, so that really helped boost my mark. He makes it clear what he wants in writing but sometimes he changes is mind right before the deadline (like length of paper and random things like that) so that made it more challenging.
Sports literature was a terrible theme already but Olbey made it so so much harder.
By far one of my favourite profs. Delivers amazing lectures and discussions(from which you get all your notes if you pay attention) but grades fairly tough. Expect lots of reading and quizzes (which are easy to ace if you do the reading). Will take the time to answer any questions you have after class and responds quickly to emails. Amazing!
Dr Olbey while a nice person to talk to is extremely frustrating. He runs his class so that if you arent there you cant get the information. And if you happened to miss something and want it later he wont give it to you. His course outline and assignment instructions are lacking detail which makes it hard to succeed. Maybe go for another prof.
Dr. Olbey is a very knowledgeable professor in his area of specifics, although as a non-english major I found that he was very bias towards the english major students. He did not take into consideration mine or my peers accommodations, as well would not answer emails or would reply days later when my question was no longer relevant.
Gives only a week to study for memorization heavy first exam that has an entire books worth if material AND gives you an entirely different idea about its format. Raises the bar for the second essay even if he says you improved. Ignores emails until office hours and even then doesnt always reply.
Very knowledgeable but awful at communication. Has one office hour per week, and he never answers emails. He changes his mind about assignments and refuses to admit mistakes. He didn't tell us anything about the final until the day before it opened and told us it would be on the last book, and then changed his mind to be on all 4 books right before
I recommend going to lectures, anything that he emphasizes/mentions often means it will show up on your midterm. Although it was a challenging class that made you work for your grade, it was rewarding because it expanded my understanding of literary theory while exploring the novels in-depth. If you want a fulfilling English class, this is it
Dr. Olbey was very knowledgable, however a tough grader and gave a lot of homework!! Get ready to read! I found some of the quizzes unfair but some of his assignments were fun.
Taking detective fiction with Dr. Olbey was a great experience. Though there is quite a bit of reading, I found that his selected texts were absolutely phenomenal; he certainly knows good books that'll keep you engaged. His reading quizzes are slightly elementary and his writing expectations are high. Nonetheless, such a wonderful prof and person.
You NEED to participate and speak up in class to do well, Olbey will recognize your name. Its a LOT of work, however a huge plus side is that Olbey very clearly outlines his expectations with rubrics and examples so you can tailor your writing to what he wants, no surprises. Discussions in class are interesting and he doesnt go on tangents.
NOT THE BEST
Prof. Olbey made his criteria very clear from day one and as long as you follow the resources he posted on d2l and use the textbook he provides like a BIBLE you should be okay. It helps to participate in class because you get the most out of it that way. His class was enjoyable and memorable.
Doesnt reply to emails and when he does hes condescending and passive aggressive. Takes no regard for the effort students put in. Grades an intro English class as if its a much higher level English class. Highly recommend to not take a course of his
TBH Olbey was disappointing as a professor. He was inaccessible the entire term, neither responding to email or giving feedback for a thesis. The grading for essays is confusing and unhelpful as no written advice is given and he won't meet to talk about it. He did give extensions due to COVID as he and students were behind all semester.
Amazing. One of my favourite classes and my favourite English Prof at the university. Class was fairly easy and simple, as long as you stayed prepared and participated in class. Obey was very encouraging, and really cared about students.
SEEMS nice. I say this bc I've never actually talked to him... bc I simply cannot reach him. he has never replied to a single email I sent. it's not just me. A girl brought it up in class, and he completely dodged the statement. Also, his lectures are hard to follow. Talks through the content too fast and only put up notes a fraction of the time :(
Dr. Olbey is obviously very passionate about literature, especially fantasy. However, he is an extremely tough grader and often brought up themes and the like in quizzes that didn't even feel present in the actual books, and his "objective" answers often felt like his subjective opinions being presented as facts. Grading criteria often felt vague.
It was one of the best courses that I ever took. He actually makes it a point of duty to remember every student's name, and I don't know how he does that. We had to read 4 books, and quizzes and exams were structured in a way that you must have read the books to pass them. He made solid attempts to help students pass and was always available.
I had him in Spring and the grading criteria was not clear at all. It was so broad. He's a fun guy and his paper topics are not bad. The only issue was that the criteria was not clear at all.
My semester with Prof. Olbey started out promising, I enjoyed his lectures and liked participating in class discussion. But after receiving grades back after the first assignment, our class average was 66%. He implied in a subsequent lecture that it was our fault for not understanding close reading after first year. Class morale tanked.
You must be willing to work really, really hard and stay up to speed with lectures and material because Dr. Olbey's classes focus on engraining the material into one's head very well so stick to the outline and read/watch the subject matter ahead of time. The humor and genuine desire for his students do well make Dr. Olbey's classes truly worth it.
One of the worst courses I've ever taken. The workload required was extreme. Exams and papers had vague and unhelpful feedback, with the professor often implying we should just be "better students". His teaching often dismissed student's ideas of texts in place for his own. Very difficult to reach outside of class. Lecture's often went overtime.
This prof was a tough grader and keeping up with the reading was a bit difficult, but he's got quite the engaging personality to make up for it. Class could be a blast, but he'd get caught up easily that it's hard to make it through the content. He was fun but I value my grades lol
Olbey is an okay teacher, however, he does not tell you what he expects of you in assignments. Very hard marker does not like to reevaluate your assignments, his class lectures do not help with assignments and tests so his class is pointless. He made his tests easy but marks incredibly hard on assignments. Be prepared for low grades and rude emails
This was probably the worst class I ever took. Olbey was not clear on any assignments and if you went to email him, he was rude and just told you to "look at the course outline". His tests were hard and he was the hardest grader known to mankind. When the class average came back for the first tests he told us it was out fault.
Prof Olbey seems like a nice guy, but his grading criteria is next to impossible. He never answers emails, sets unclear expectations for assignments, and suggests that we should just be better students instead of improving his grading criteria. The class average for assignments is usually pathetic. On the bright side, he doesn't give late penalties
Prof. Olbey's ENGLISH 253 class was the most difficult english class I have ever taken. ENGLISH 253 (short fiction) is a class designed for any major, however, as an english major I have never struggled so greatly. Tests were difficult, lectures felt disorganized, and the feedback given on assignments was VERY limited.
Very tough grader, especially for a 200 level course. Quizzes were random, hard to study for. Lenient with deadlines and fairly constructive feedback. He could be intimidating and borderline rude responding to emails and questions, but always great at getting discussions going in class. 3 papers, 3 tests, discussion posts. Tough prof, but nice.
Never had such a passive aggressive prof in my life. Not very considerate. Tough grader. Limited feedback.
I loved Olbey's English class because there were no late penalty's and required participation! Although his grading isn't the easiest, I found it to be pretty similar to other English courses I've taken. I enjoyed his teaching and discussion format. We had to complete 10 discussion board posts over the term, but they were just for completion.
Professor Olbey was great. English 203 was my first english class as an english major, and I loved every minute of it. He was very understanding. He was a harder marker, but he provided feedback, outlined what how to receive a better grade. With his feedback, I was able to improve my essay marks drastically from the first essay to the last.
Dr. Olbey berated students in front of the class, used a textbook with incorrect and offensive terminology, and didn't have clear criterion for assignments. He also cancelled 2 assignments because of the time it took for him to grade (which helped my mark, but still sucks).
He seemed nice at first, but he is so passive aggressive. Class averages were so low and he blamed students for not being prepared. Even when you did study for the tests, there was no guarantee of a good grade. He seemed like he had no care for students success which made him quite hard to approach. He could be a good prof for some, not for me tho.
Prof Olbey has a great personality, and is overall a great dude, but he needs to realize that most of the people in his class are not english majors. His marking system is really in-depth and I overall didn't mind it, but it's just how HARD he marked which bugged me a bit. The final was easy but the format was changed 3 times the day before.
Funny guy but not empathetic to students at all. He marks super hard and the textbook is hard to get through. He seems to think his class is the only one students are taking. When asked if he's available to meet after class, he says he's just too busy. Sent 3 emails throughout the semester and didn't get one reply.
Professor Olbey's lectures were super interesting, but he is a tough grader. This class was pretty light in terms of the amount of assignments. On the exams and final, he expects you to apply things that were said in class, so go to class and take good notes. If you do well on the exams, then you can redeem your mark from the papers.
AVOID. VERY BAD. Passive aggressive. Essay Rubric is stupidly strict making writing painful. EXCESSIVELY criticized everything I wrote. Failed 2 assignments. His multiple-choice questions are impossibly challenging though I thoroughly read all material. Curiously, did not directly teach us. Rather made videos on D2L. Was forced to read like MAD.
Avoid if you can. Way too much work and for so low marks. Dropped my GPA, I'm an English major and usually get A's in classes for perspective, I have taken 400 level courses easier than this.
Extremely tough grader who thinks everybody in his class is an English major. Exams and tests are basically impossible even if you study. Expects you to recall everything you talked about from every lecture, Please avoid Prof if possible.
Avoid at all costs! But if you do enjoy wasting your time and money, having your emails ignored, and d2L news being a blank screen, then keep him as your prof! Unless you are the next William Shakespeare, I would definitely stay away. I don't even think Shakespeare would be able to survive this guy.
Professor Olbey mainly teaches via student engagement, so the quality of lecture is dependent on whether the class participates. His tests focus on reading comprehension and memorizing content from the textbook, and they require you to study and not simply re-read the content. In terms of difficulty, ENGL 253 is harder than other 200-level courses.
Overall, Professor Olbey was a good lecturer, however, his marking criteria is unbelievably difficult. Unless you excessive amounts of time on his papers, don't expect to do well. Multiple choice tests are tough, even as an English major. The lectures and material was good, but to do well, you must put in excessive amounts of work.
This prof was very unorganized and it was extremely difficult to find useful info and guidelines for projects, tests, or even classes on the class website. Not to mention grading was unbelievably difficult and expectations were through the roof. All though the classes and lectures would have been useful to attend, they were so incredibly boring.
I don't understand why Obey gets such a bad rep on here. He is a very tough grader and his tests challenging, however, he really wants his students to learn and succeed in his class. He has clear grading criteria for the papers, and gives you exactly what you need to prepare for tests. I would definitely take another class with Olbey.
The way the course was set up wasn't great for full time students, especially if you have other obligations. No assigned textbook but lists of reading you could choose from then when it came to two days before the exam you found out what was on it, and you had to match quotations to authors. Was a nice guy just not set up for success.
The most unorganized professor I've ever had. He would give us way too many random readings but then would say we only had to read a few, but then the quizzes were on all of them. He would not answer my questions in email and would be quite rude in replying. I'm pretty sure my entire class did terribly in this course. Just unfair.
he isnt the most kind or empathetic prof but hes passionate about what he does and has a true appreciation for literature. if you really follow his guidelines for assignments and read whatever he assigns, you will succeed. also love that participation isnt mandatory and he doesnt grade with bias. his assignments were pretty fun too
Olbey is a tough grader but he makes his lectures so enjoyable. I felt that his mc tests were very fair if you read and studied the readings. The tough part of the course is the essays you do. He grades tough but gives good and constructive criticism and my grades only went up as the semester continued. He's very passionate and loves what he does.
An obtuse lecturer. You have to literally learn an idiosyncratic hieroglyph system to understand how he marks you. Texts are obnoxiously long, and he summarizes them in platitudes. Topics are incredibly niche, and sources (for which there is always a required minimum) are hard to find that aren't from the authors we're already reading.
Prof Olbey's lectures are engaging, but his grading is tough. Attend class, take notes, and use resources like unstuckstudy ai to prepare for exams. It's a challenging course, but worth it if you put in the effort.
Even as an English Major, I had no clue what to do in his courses besides read the stories he gave us. There was a lack of guidance, really. The "manual" was supposedly our saving grace but that textbook got me D's and C's. There's lack of feedback on assignments unless you go to office hours, which are packed. Know your literary devices!!
Prof Olbey was amazing. Once you learn what he's looking for it's a lot easier to do well, but up until that point it's tough. He grades tough but fair and he really cares about each of his students. I will 100% be taking his classes again
Although a kind man his organization is super off, no clear direction on any assignments or what he's looking for. If you ask for clarification he responds with "I get what you mean.." and then answers something you never asked in the first place, not really acsessible either. If there's someone else save yourself and take the course with them.
Professor Olbey is currently my favourite prof at the uni. His lectures are fascinating and engaging, the work-load was relatively light, and he just had a great personality that made class so enjoyable. His feedback on writing was always very clear and I was able to get an A+ on the final essay. I will definitely be taking another class with him!
Make sure to go to classes as he talks about parts of the story that are on his midterms. Midterms personally were easy if you know your literary devices but is a hard marker if you are not the best writer like me. Going through the manual is mandatory to do well on the tests and try to go to office hours to learn how to write better.
Olbey was a chill guy, pretty funny. But, his way of "teaching" was telling us to read the manual and if we did not understand it then read it again. It was quite frustrating especially when he says to "explicate" but would not explain how to explicate in a way that anyone could understand.
Going to lectures is the most important aspect of class, most of the midterm content is focused on the discussions in class. He is a very good lecturer and he gives very good advice and feedback on writing and analyzing texts. Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to withdraw from the course.
Dr Olbey is a wonderful teacher that really cares about his students. I recommend participating in class discussions and going to every lecture. His tests are really easy as long as you take good notes in his lectures. He even stayed with me past his working time to help me with my essay.
Grading criteria was not very clear. Obley liked creative projects the best but creativity was very subjective to him, preferring interviews over physical art. (unspecified preference) Final exam was based on group presentations, materials that were barely mentioned in class. Prepare to teach yourself in this class.
I would rather have every nerve ripped from my body than read through his rubrics or do another "creative" project.
Olbey is probably the best English Prof I've had. He engages with students and builds really great connections within the course and outside. If you want to succeed in his classes though make sure you show up to class, this is a must. Especially for exams.. his exams are not easy but if you do the work and show up easy A. Great prof
For 369. All of the bad reviews scared me but he is actually a really great prof. I learned a lot in his class and he wasn't a hard marker. His exams were kind of hard (but not impossible if you did the readings and came to class) but the grades you get on assignments even your grade out.
If you like to grind hard for your projects and study hard for your tests, and then get spat at by an airheaded prof with zero lecturing skills and a faceless T.A who rips you apart and grades all your assignments then you'll love taking a class with this professor.
Such a tough grader and is insensitive. His tests are very hard and based on group presentations like which group made a podcast. And rambles about the most random things. I wanted to like this class and the stuff we were learning about was great but i hated my life.
He is a nice person and very knowledgeable, but was not a helpful professor. In his lectures, he goes on tangents very often, so if you struggle with focus, don't take his class. He is a really hard grader and from my experience, almost forces his own thoughts and ideas onto your assignments. He also has never responded to one of my emails.
Nice guy but extremely hard marker. Never replies to emails either. Has very high expectations when it comes to critical assignments/essays, and marks pretty subjectively…
Grading is HORRIBLE. Even if you apply all his feedback into your work he will still say it's not enough. Doesn't even know what he is expecting himself but will continue to say it isn't up to his standard. I actually have no clue how he's allowed to teach so many classes being so unorganized.
Olbey was a brutal marker and does not care about students success. He did not reply to anyone's emails for weeks and does not give out information if you miss class. Do not take this prof!
Expect a 30% drop in your usual/expected English average. Olbey, despite providing guidelines for how he wants assignments written, always grades disproportionately low compared to effort and skill for what is supposed to be an introductory English class. Would not recommend for majors who need/want a high GPA.
The assessments (only 3 in total, so each was worth a lot) were not representative of the class material. We were told our mcq would be "easy" plot questions, but all the questions were difficult. He also marks very strict for a 200 level ENGL class and it's frustrating that he doesn't use D2L to share any class information other than the syllabus.
pretty sure he's evil.
Nice guy and decent lectures but just a very hard marker and not the most clear on what he is looking for
He was a professor who cared a lot about attendance and participation, so he often gatekept a lot of information we needed about key assignments or the text. Coupled with being difficult to reach after class, many of the class was left in the dark. If you like heavy, but minimal assignments and explicated discussions on the text, take this class!
Something's genuinely not right w him
Misleading about exam material - says it will only be questions from specific material and then throws in questions from barely touched on material.. Attendance matters, classes are interesting. Tries to fit a whole semester worth of material in 6 weeks, which is unattainable for students taking multiple classes.
way too much content for a spring course, incredibly unrealistic expectation for students to watch multiple shows that are 16+ hours long each every week
Took ENGL 388. I was excited for this class but unfortunately, despite attending all lectures, the prof made sure the tests were impossible to do well on. Class average was always low. He would still mark assignments better but in Olbey's class expect to receive a C if your a B or B+ student. Drop if you can to save yourself the torture!
Very nice guy, good email communication. Lots of his testing content comes from textbooks/course readings. Stay on top of readings and participate in class, and you will succeed.
Olbey was a good professor, he had interesting comments and was able to keep the room busy. If you love English classes, he is great for you. Unfortunately, I don't enjoy English as much, if you are a business student just trying to get past that Jr English, just pick 251, not 253, it'll be easier. However, if you like English class, Olbey is great
never again.
Torture. Tests were impossible to do well on, lectures were just ramblings with no clear instruction, feedback was incredibly biased, IMPOSSIBLE to reach outside of class (was unable to complete things or go on campus due to illness and I couldn't reach him to make up for it, hence my grade).
Dr. Olbey makes things difficult for no reason. Doesn't post notes, hard to reach outside of class and overall doesn't seem like he cares about student success or experience in the slightest. If you can, I sincerely hope you can avoid taking one of his classes.
This class felt like doing time in prison.
