Honestly, have never met the professor, the labs are run by TA's. I've emailed a few times with questions but never got a response. Syllabus makes it clear that we should not contact her unless we absolutely have to. Also, minimal guidance of how to do the calculations for lab.
Dr. Guest is a great person to talk to outside of class if you are struggling with the material. I would definitely recommend going to see her since she isnt the best lecturer. The course is easy if you can understand what she is trying to say and study with practice problems.
The way this class is laid out offers almost no guidance on how to do your lab calculations, they basically expect you to come to office hours to learn how to do what you're supposed to be learning in lab. The lab reports are graded extremely harshly even in scenarios where she had us use data we knew was incorrect.
Lab reports were way too hard with little to no support from Guest or the TA. Why are we being given a 200 pt final on experiments we never got to do in a global pandemic? No help or support from anyone, both instructor and TA never respond to emails timely. No help on how to do complicated calculations and no office hours. Terrible, beware of her.
Absolutely terrible lab coordinator. Disrespectful, uncaring, and unresponsive. She treated us terribly and put in zero effort into doing her job. Im actually amazed she still teaches there given how awful she was. She did not care about students and it almost seems like she went out of her way to make things as bad as possible for everyone.
AWFUL. A W F U L. take anyone over her. might as well learn from a rock.
I swear she doesn't speak english and it seemed like she had never taught in her whole life. You will be left confused after every lecture. If you take her, GO TO GSS. It is the only way you will learn a single thing. She rarely answers emails but she does seem caring deep down.
TA's will be teaching you in lab in person. However, when this class was online, I had a hard time understanding her in the recorded lectures! I was confused at first and pretty much had to teach myself how to do things from the lab book. Make sure you give yourself like 2 days to do the weekly lab reports! Get your lab partners number for help!
Awful. The most unorganized course I have ever taken. You can spend 4 hours on a lab and then have to redo the whole thing when she updates data. I do not understand how she became a chemist or even a chemistry professor with the lab videos that are released. Avoid at all costs if you want to keep your sanity.
Would not recommend if you hate teaching yourself
I woke up every morning debating if I should pour hot coffee in my eyes or do her labs. Wish I stuck with the coffee
Doesn't care about students. Her TA's do all of the work but they don't communicate with each other and give contradicting info. So unorganized and messy. She takes off points for things with no explanation and isn't approachable at all. Avoid at all costs!!!!
Online lab was ran horribly. It was disorganized and the TAs gave contradicting information and even if you got the right answer it was marked wrong. Most errors were fixed by the end of the semester but not without extra work from students to point out the mistakes. Do not take if u want your grade to actually reflect your work/understanding!!!!!
Sorry excuse for a prof, does absolutely nothing to help and has her TA's do everyone. Take anyone else but her. Extremely unaccommodating and just overall horrible
No clear grading criteria, never replies to emails or communicates with students, makes the class feel impossible, and never helps students struggling.
Dr. Guest is probably the worst Professor Ive ever taken. She NEVER responds to any of her emails and I never actually saw her once throughout the entirety of the course. I would definitely avoid her at all costs. The only reason I got an A in this class was because I would spend hours teaching myself everything as even the TAs didnt really help.
Literally awful. She doesn't help with anything and the assignments take hours just to figure out what she wants from you. The prelab quizzes have nothing to do with the labs or anything she goes over.
You have to teach yourself almost entirely! Instructions almost always vague. Overall very unaccomodating and difficult. Don't stress yourself out, take someone else!
This was one of the most disorganized classes ive ever taken. She and the TAs were rude and no one was ever on the same page. The lab videos were horrible. Points were taken off of assignments with no explanation provided. You are basically left out to dry on every assignment including the final.
Absolutely terrible, 0/10 do not recommend.
Worst professor in the chemistry department hands down. She doesn't give a damn about any of her students and could care less if you are struggling. For the final, everyone got a ridiculous email from her saying that if your wifi cuts out during the exam then she "can't do anything" and you automatically get a 0. She's also rude in office hours.
She is a very nice person but sometimes the class is just very irritating. She does not give clear answers to the questions and sometimes even the TAs dont know the answer to the questions. Its like you have to deal with the problem even if you never learned how to do it.
Dr. Guest seems to be a nice person, but that doesn't change the fact that I never really know what's going on in the class. For a 1 credit class, it should not be this difficult. I ended up teaching myself everything for the lab reports, and you do not receive explanation for why you got a question wrong. Explains why everyone fails the final.
As an asynchronous class, idk if it was a blessing or a curse. In the few meetings that I have gone like the final review, I can barely understand her as she mumbles her words in that heavy accent. Pretty degrading to students. Didn't even know who my TA was as 10 different ones graded my labs. Currently have an A, but haven't taken the final yet:(
Avoid at all costs. Its for your own good.
DONT TAKE HER. JUST DONT. Wait until there is another professor. She is rude, unintelligent, and overall terrible. She decided she is above email, she will not answer an email from you. She will not answer any questions. TAs try the best they can, but this class is lacking. She deserves a 0/5. By far the worst and most unprofessional teacher.
Do no take her. Emails? She doesn't use it. Office hours? Rude. Labs? Hard. FINAL? RIDICULOUS.
I do not respect a teacher that spells "trial" as "trail."
So disrespectful and rude to everyone. She offers no help at all and is not there for any of her students. Theres not even any opportunities to bring up your grade or ask for help. Just do not take her.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. IT WILL BE THE LAST THING YOU DO! She doesnt teach, doesnt respond to emails, is rude to students, doesnt give a damn about people struggling, the class is a mess, and the average on the the final was a 50%. You have been warned.
Worst professor I've ever had. She was never present and only appeared for the final review which was 3 hours maximum. She disappeared again afterwards.
Don't do it to yourself. So disorganized, never communicated with us once, have to teach everything to yourself and it seems like the professor finds joy in having an average of an F on the final. Out of all my classes this semester, I spent the most time on this one credit lab and got the worst grade out of all the classes I'm taking.
Absolutely the worst. I wrote a way more detailed review on planetterp so check that out. It gives space for more words. Overall, just the worst teacher I've ever had. ZERO communication. Unclear expectations. The average on the final was a 55% which I guess is good relatively speaking, since the average last semester was a 40%. Yeah.
Finished the labs with an A, final dropped me down to a C. The TAs run the whole class, dont expect to ever deal with her personally. During the final the rules of having a graphing calc, other tabs open, etc were different for every TA. I wanted to cut her some slack bc it was online, but really was the worst run class ive ever taken.
lol. Here's why: (1) Teacher barely present/barely teaches and not helpful at all (2) Doesn't respond to ANY email (3) TAs were very disorganized (4) Final that is 1/3 of grade, average 40-58% (yes people actually studied a lot) XOXO. Student who isn't getting 4.0 gpa because of this sh*t.
There was a lack of communication with this professor. She also would not respond to student emails. She was not very detail-oriented in the lab videos and would often miss stuff. The grading method is unclear to this day. The final exam average was an F, even though she held a 3 hour review session, which I watched twice and still did terrible!
This class will make you for a good grade. Reading the manual, watching the prelab videos and doing the pre-quizzes took me 2 hours, plus 3 hours to do the experiments and even more time doing the post labs. Recorded lectures are decent. TAs vary in quality. Curve compensates (about 6%). She's demeaning if you're confused, doesn't reply to emails
All Imma say is bless her for the curve at the end LMFAOOOOO because there was no reason for us to put up with this much stress/work for a 1 credit lab
This woman laughed at students who attended her exam review session for asking questions. Whats so funny?? Her god awful teaching and grading skills? I implore my fellow Terps to just take the Intro to Gen Chem lab over the summer at a community college and transfer the credits. Save yourselves.
She NEVER replies to email .
I was maintaining a grade about 5% above average throughout the semester and then I did about 20% better than the average on the final and received a really generous curve. Just do above average in the class and youll do great. She gives the top 10% of the class a grade in the A range.
Honestly, Guest is not your professor, your TA is. I took this during COVID, so it was online. The only time I came in contact with Guest is when she uploaded panopto videos that I couldn't understand. Luckily, I had a good TA to help me through the course, but if you don't get a good TA, good luck. The final was also very hard, but curved.
Can someone tell me what the curve is? She won't respond to her email
I bet if you could give professors 0 that's what she would have then for everyone. She should be fired, enough said. It is sick how she treats her students. I have no respect for her and neither does anyone who has taken this course.
Imagine spending hours on labs, lab quizzes, reading the manual, etc in order to maintain an A (94 to be specific) throughout the entire semester and dropping to a C from the final (average was an F btw). Oh wait I dont have to imagine cause this was me. The min grades were updated she didnt bother to message us about a curve or anything. Foul.
I am so upset because she never responds to my emails. I have had a grade issue for a few weeks and I email her about the same stuff and she does not get back to me!!!!! I am so mad
Go to TA office hours.
Go to TA office hours for the best results as email is not always a good option.
Very hard labs and tests, not easy to contact at all. Email your TA.
Even though shes her teacher you probably will never see her the entire semester, as the class is run and graded entirely by TAs. Very bad at telling students important information, and offers no explanation for anything. If you want to pass you will have to seek a lot of outside help. Labs arent hard but there is a lot of outside help.
If you are able to wait until your next semester to see if there is a possibility that this class is ran by a different teacher, i strongly advise you to do so. The pre-lab quizzes were ridiculously hard as well as the midterm and final. The content provided in the lab manual does not reflect on the tests She is also really difficult to reach.
So, the class isn't great. The lab manual is kind of vague and the TAs are not very well prepared. Dr. Guest was very understanding in terms of accommodations and extenuating circumstances. I even slept through a midterm and she let me make it up as soon as I emailed her. Her expectations are well defined and I always knew what was due and when.
I have only seen Dr. Guest one time my whole time being in Chem 132. The grading is all done by the TA's and they were helpful. Unfortunately, my lab time was during Dr. Guests' office hours, so I was never able to go to them. I cannot say for sure she is good or bad because I have only ever seen her one time and I have never spoken to her.
The amount of stress this class gave me broke my face out. If you want a clear skin, don't take this class. If you want to sleep in peace, don't take it. If you don't wanna drink 2 cans of 16 oz red bull to stay up the whole night studying just to get an F on your midterm, guess what? Don't take this class
Pre labs can be almost impossible and test averages are around 50%, very hard class but if you study you will pass
I was in her lecture class and I got covid at the beginning of the semester, so I had to miss two weeks worth of class. I emailed her and she said that I can follow through with the lectures on Tophat. it only has the slides. She does not record and she has attendance questions. I had to teach myself for weeks. Worst Class Ever. n the labs? no.
I literally have never seen this woman because the TAs run the labs but the amount of stress she gave me for a 1 credit class is insane. Whoever decided to give finals or midterms in a LAB is seriously horrible. the average of the midterm was around a 50% and just dropped people's grades for no reason, don't take her if you don't have to
Honestly, I never once interacted with the actual professor. The lab is completely TA led and I never needed to reach out to the professor. I did not think the labs were hard but they did require work. I did not think this was a terrible experience and she does curve at the end.
The lab itself and post-lab questions were fine. The pre-lab, midterm, and final are horrible. They're confusing and do not reflect the things we do in lab. Professor Guest is very disorganized and does not explain anything, so everything is confusing. The averages of the midterm and finals are below 40% which is saying something.
Dr. Guest made a one credit lab feel like a four credit class. The labs are extremely tedious and often you have to go to office hours to actually understand what you are actually doing. The labs are not aligned with what we are learning in CHEM131 so we were always confused. If there is one good thing I can say about Dr. Guest, she curved well.
Dr Guest wasn't really involved at all since your TA teaches your section and TAs grade everything. She gives a midterm and final exam and I got the grade I did primarily because of the exams (worth 26% of your grade) so study for those. If your data is weird, write a note on your lab report and you won't get points off. Curve for me was 90 to 98.
Dr. Guest did not interact with students outside her office hours and the TA's ran everything which was kind of a nightmare. No one in our section had the first 5 lab reports (which we were suppose to use as study material) graded with feedback until the night before the midterm. Some TA's were really helpful but most didn't care.
Never comes prepared to class, can't use technology for her benefit, can't email her for help, horrible lecture style, is not engaging, and many other flaws in her teaching style. Haven't taken an exam yet and feel greatly unprepared. If you want to do well, read every single word in the textbook. That is the only way you will learn.
I've never met this woman, she does not interact with her students, deliberately stating at the beginning of the course to not email her barring emergency. Her lab reports, while fair, are inconsistently graded due to different grading policies of different TAs. The midterm and final were not fair however, as they had many poorly worded questions.
Dr. Guest is the epitome of what college students are scared of regarding professors. She arrives late to every lecture. She is hard to follow, because she is hard to understand. Reading the textbook and attending discussion are a must. GSS is a helpful tool. She bullies her students into answering questions quickly and is always condescending. RUN
BAD BAD BAD you can barely understand her and she comes to class late. our first exam we learned the last section of topics the day AFTER the exam. She is gonna leave UMD soon and you can tell how little she cares about the class.
Labs don't match up with class curriculum, reports take a month to get back, inconsistent grading amongst TAs, pre-lab recordings are impossible to understand without listening twice. The lab isn't difficult, but the questions in the manual asked are knowledge/application questions. Knowledge you don't have if you haven't learned it yet.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! HER ACCENT IS SO HEAVY ALONE TO THE POINT THAT YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND HER GIBBERISH AND UNORGANIZED LECTURES!!!! Tests are impossible. She's always late, unorganized, and hard to follow. She skips slides in her lectures and moves way too fast to the point where she does not make sense. She gets her own example problems wrong too.
the CHEM department at UMD is known to be one of the worst, and she is the reason why. everything is very harshly graded with little to no wiggle room
Heavy accent, pretty hard to understand at times. I eventually just stopped going to lectures in person and logged in on zoom. She uses an online textbook called TopHat with homework/reading problems (do them if you want to do well). The tests are extremely hard but she curves you're grade at the end (pretty large curve tbh).
Dr. Guest is impossible to get ahold of. Course workload is ridiculous. Pre-labs are very hard. Getting a perfect score is impossible. Lab reports graded by a diff TA every time and some are extremely harsh graders. Exams are impossible to pass and filled with horribly worded questions. Despite doing well on most of the lab reports, failed exams.
Avoid this professor. She has asked students to answer a problem in class, and laughed out loud if they get it wrong. She uses TopHat for her textbook and homework questions and it is very hard to keep track of homework with it. She also has a hard time keeping track of her students with accommodations and has forgotten to give them for exams.
Taking the lab you don't have a a lot of contact with Dr. Guest and with the right TA the class is bearable. If you need to get in contact with her it is near impossible and the quizzes and exams created by her are difficult. It is clear her communication with the TAs is limited because often the TAs were just as clueless as us. Work hard to pass.
I did very well on all pre-labs, lab reports, and post-lab questions, prepared to get an A in the class. The midterm and final were not only extremely unnecessary but were the reason I ended with a B. Everything is done by the TAs and for only a 1 credit course I am beyond disappointed.
run before it's too late.
Absolutely not this should be illegal. A 1 credit course in which I would spend many hours doing the work is honestly ridiculous. Labs were fun but the manual questions we would have to answer required a lot of extra thinking. Grading was unfair when it came to lab reports, manuals, and exams.
Horrible. Lab reports graded by TAs you don't know, so good luck trying to get back any points (their feedback is also useless). Class is supposed to be aligned with CHEM131, but often they don't line up, so you fail reports because you weren't even taught the information you needed to know in the first place. Disorganized and unfair.
tbh she wasn't that bad, chemistry is not an easy class, to begin with. I recommend doing all the homework and using the textbook because that was the best way to learn and do best on the quizzes.
She was an extremely kind professor but her lectures were hard to follow. She makes it so that the course material is not too bad but you have to teach yourself to some extent. The homework she assigned was sometimes a bit long but it was extremely helpful in understanding the material. Dr. Guest was not the greatest lecture ever (being kind).
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD, WENT TO CLASS AND STILL SPENT HOURS UPON HOURS STUDYING TO TRY AND LEARN WHAT SHE TAUGHT IN 50 MINS, IF YOU WANT TO FAIL PLEASE TAKE HER AS A PROFESSOR
She does not answer emails and her lectures are VERY unclear. Also the tests are 10x more difficult than anything you will see in discussion or lectures. The dates everything are due is so confusing and she is very hard to understand as she screams into the microphone during lecture giving me a headache. You will fail.
SHE'S TERRIBLE. I never get stressed about exams but I was genuinely scared this whole semester I was going to fail her class. She is very unclear in EVERYTHING... elms, lectures, grades. I literally don't even know my grade right now.
Dr. Guest is nice but biochem is not. I took this over summer and oh my goodness it was crazy. If you want to do well you really do have to study for these exams. If you ace all the homeworks it will provide a really nice boost to your final grade. The curve was amazing. Put in the work and don't wait til the last minute and you can pass!
Dr. Guest made sure we were prepared for every exam by giving homework, quizzes, study guides, and practice exams. Those practice exams were truly helpful and the curve is very generous. She also recorded her lectures which were helpful. Overall, if you pay attention and do all the assignments you will definitely pass gen chem.
Dr. Guest is a very nice individual. She may not have the best teaching technique, but she loves to answer questions and clarify things in office hours. When I had her, it was her first time using Top Hat, so it was a little bit disorganized. However, participation matters, and she does curve. Study and review constantly. Good luck!
Most disorganized professor at UMD. It is embarrassing that UMD selected her as the lab coordinator out of all the other options. Pre-labs are never posted until the day before lab. In the lab, TAs have told us to lie about our numbers and alter them to the outcomes they were supposed to be. Wearing lab safety gear is also never enforced.
Not timely grading. Very little feedback. Case-sensitive submissions for prelab quizzes (could have correct answer but if you type it incorrectly you lose all credit). Very unresponsive via email. Constant anxiety about unclear/subjective grading criteria takes away from fun of doing chemistry experiments. Graded on norm curve (can get curved down)
Inaccessible to students when needed most. Content-heavy 1-credit lab with 2-3 question weekly quizzes almost as heavily weighted as the weekly lab reports. Unfair and egregiously late grading, unresponsiveness, and her absence from the course instruction are justification enough to avoid her course at all costs.
why does UMD even still allow her to teach
She was the lab coordinator so I never actually met her but she wrote the lab manual we used and it can be very confusing at some points. I think this is more of a cirriculum/department issue but the labs didn't line up with lecture, so its not clear what is going on and you just have to try your best to understand.
