She is very friendly and helpful. Her papers are hard and challenging. She is willing to help you out on them anyways. Her tests were easy just study for them. Her final exam is the easiest part of her class. We get to watch videos on history. She also does drop your lowest test grade no matter what.Show up or she nails you for not showing up.
She is a great teacher! She gives you alot of ways to get extra credit. Make sure you follow what she wants you to do on your 2 papers. Don't miss a class because you loose out on 20 extra credit points right there. You need to study every for the quizs and terms. You can also get the edition under the one required.I got mine for $5.00.
She is a very good teacher to have. She will work with you. You can use the edition before the one required.Study and go to every class because you will get 20 extra points just for going. You only have to do 2 papers in her class. Make sure you do them her way.Answser questions!!!!!!!
Very easy professor if you are willing spend a few minutes studying and doing homework. Show up to class and she won?t give you any problems. Make sure you follow directions on papers, but even if you don?t I?ve heard that she lets you correct them and resubmit. Defiantly and easy A.
I took this class online thinking that it would be an easy A. However there is so much work in this class! In one quarter (10 weeks) we had over 1000 pts and all your assignments are papers (that goes for the midterm & final). She grades your papers like an English teacher. I would not recommend her for a 100 level course. Look for someone else!
Her online class is very time consuming! She does post assignments ahead of time so you can work ahead, but I didn't have any time to work ahead. She has the same type of assignments every week, just different chapters. All the assignments are short answer, including the midterm and final. Be prepared to earn your grade!
Prof.Hurford was overall a good prof. She gives many opportunities for extra credit and good instructions for assignments. Her attitude towards students is a bit condescending in nature, but she was very helpful. Only take her class if you can show up to class everyday and ON TIME or she will flip out.
Her online class was hard to follow, there was no board for student interaction, her assignment instructions were unclear and she marked off for things that were never listed in the instructions, All she had us do was read from the book and watch undiscriptive power point presentations. Be careful if you take this class online with this teacher
Dr. Hurford is a very intelligent and helpful teacher, but she has a tendency to focus on little details that most do not and will eventually show in your grade. I spent six to eight hours a week outside of class and only received a B. Work hard and do not rush because you will make frivolous mistakes and point will be taken off. Good luck.
dr. hurford is very tedious in her lesson plan do not challenge her authority at all!! she is small but she is not afraid of confrontation. she does present opportunities for extra credit and they are reasonable i was just to lazy to do mine. be on time and if you cant, be on time for mondays class because she gives quizzes every monday.
If you want to receive a 0 out of 100 after working really hard then take this class. If not, do not even think about taking her class. By far the worst instructor you can have.
There is a lot of reading, the overall class is not hard, she lays everything out so there is no reason not to do ok. She even lays out how she wants the papers wrote. She is quick to return emails and will help explain something you didn't understand.
Dr. Hurford, Is an amazing history teacher who really just wants the best for you. Make sure you attend all the classes and don't come in late. If you do so you get 20 extra bonus points at the end of the semster! Do all the online quizzes and complete all the quizzes that she gives. She keeps office hours and emails back fast. 110% recommend her!
She is very clear on what you need to do in order pass the class.
don't take this class if you want a fair instructor
Worst teacher ever. She would grade one thing easy and give a good grade and then grade another thing completely different. She is more into English type work when grading than history. Read her reviews under Christianna Thomas at OSU. Horrible reviews. Don't take her. You'll get bad grades if she doesn't like you. Very rude in emails.
Very hard class, very hard professor. A lot of reading, only a couple of papers but journals every other week that weren't very clear
Dr. Hurford is an amazing instructor. She is very knowledgeable in her field and has a vast range of information on the topics covered. She will work with you to get your grade up, and as long as you put forth the effort, you will do well in her class.
This teacher is fine, but she wears her PHD as a badge of pride. This class feels like a highschool classroom opposed to a college classroom. However, she does seem to be fair in grading, and seems like an overall decent instructor, just don't be expecting a college type setting for her classroom.
Please please please, do not take this teacher at all, I am surprise with the fact that she is still teaching at Columbus State, I am in dean's list, I am a hard worker student but this teacher is impossible. I got an A+ in all of my papers but this teacher hardly gives me C. If you want to do all the work and recieve zero then take her.
If you want to do everything and recieve zero then take her, not a fair instructor at all :(
This is by far the hardest teacher and class I have EVER IN MY LIFE TAKEN! The professor grades more like an english professor. In all of my other classes I am getting A's & B's but I am failing this class. She is not helpful at all or fair in her grading. I get F's on all of my papers and then on the exams I do well? Makes no sence, HORRIBLE PROF
Absolutely rediculous. Instead of grading like a HISTORY PROFESSOR, she grades like an ENGLISH TEACHER. Don't take her class unless you're a History Major. Attitude with emails. Her grading is confusing, absolutely ridiculous.
Dr. Hurford is an amazing instructor! She is very clear what she expects out of you. Attend all the classes, be on time, and don't leave early. If you put forth the effort you will do well in her class. Follow her instructions on the two required papers and you will get a good grade. She gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. Hurford is one of the best instructors I have had in my time at Columbus State. She grades fairly, explains what she wants, if you have a question she replies quickly to emails (just make sure your not using slang) Interesting lectures, participate and do the work and you will be fine. She gave so much extra credit i had and A before the final!
I strongly suggest to anyone serious about their grades, don't take her class. She is not clear about what she wants and will have no problem in giving you 0 for your work. By far the worst instructor I have ever had. You will spend more than half of the semester reading a bunch of useless material that's not helpful on the test. Waist of time.
Wonderful teacher! Very understanding and helpful. Do the work, listen in class and make sure to read the chapters and you will have a great experience in her class!
I put in at least 12 hours a week on this class, follow the assignments word for word and still cannot seem to please this professor. She is pompous and grades like an English prof. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL! She is a horrible professor to write papers for, I put in HOURS UPON HOURS of work and am still failing. I get A's and B's everywhere and here I am bombing hardcore. She grades like an English juggernaut instead of a History professor. She will make you very angry if you like passing classes.
Hurford is a though grader, takes off significant points for missing simple things. Follow her instructions precisely otherwise you will fail. I usually aim for As and Bs but almost got a C. She did offer extra credits that helped me into getting a B.
Dr. Hurford was very nice in class and made the long lectures interesting. What was frustrating was that no matter what I did I seemed to always get a low grade on the journals which are a major part of your grade. Participation is very important in the class and if you don't make an attempt to talk whenever possible you won't get the 100pts.
More like an English instructor. Questions are vague. Be prepared This online class takes more than 25 hrs per week
The assignments Prof. Hurford gives should be fairly easy, albeit time consuming, but she's a tough grader and not very clear in her questions. She's also not very helpful if you want specific feedback. But she gives extra credit and her midterm/finals are one essay question she lets you see beforehand. If you don't have to take this, don't bother.
I took this course online and received a B. Homework is super easy but very time consuming. Read all the chapters and jot down notes under each question of homework because she likes detail. She's a phenomenal teacher as far as helping her students and wanting them to be successful! Super sweet and responds to emails ASAP. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! :)
Very understanding. You can miss a couple of classes and still pull an A if you work hard. I want to take her other classes because of her amazing lectures and outlines.
This class was. Rey difficult! There are only 6 assignments however, be prepared for around 15-20 hours for each section! It is a ton of reading and writing. As long as you put the time in and answer the questions entirely, you will do fine! If you need help, she is there for you, just ask!
Professor Hurford knows her material and teaches it well. Her class is very difficult, however, as there are only six assignments along with the midterm and final. She did offer extra credit multiple times throughout the semester, though, which helps a lot. She gives decent feedback on written assignments and helps students through appointments.
There went my 4.0 GPA! I've spent the summer reading and writing. She doesn't lecture- YOU are in charge of teaching yourself. This class is BY FAR the worst experience I've had at CSCC. The worst part is, I HAVE LEARNED NOTHING. I could handle the workload if I've learned anything but all I've done is stress and waste time with nothing to show.
It looks like form her ratings that she is a good teacher to have for in class teaching, but on the other hand she isn't very good at online distant learning. She always is telling the class that she is the best resource, but doesn't always promptly email you. It's one thing to have you self learn, but needs to give you the takeaways she wants.
Very, very, very time consuming. If you're looking for an easy A this is not the class. There is a lot of work required and very few assignments. She is a fairly difficult grader. Be prepared to put a lot of time and effort into this class and not necessarily get a great grade. I will say she is very nice and helpful if you go to office hours.
DO NOT take this class if you want an easy A. She treats this class as if it is a 4000 level class. She also grades papers as if this is an honors English class. Very strict with how she wants the essays written. Take this professor only if you truly enjoy history and want a ridiculous challenge.
If you are taking Dr. Hurford's online class, go to her office hours! She will go over rough drafts with you and tell you how to edit your assignments to get an A. You still have to work hard for the grade, especially for the midterm and final, but don't be afraid to ask for help.
If you're looking for an easy online class, don't take her class. Her paper topics are vague and then grades them harshly. I spend more than 12 hours a week doing her class. I've learned absolutely nothing. Her class has been nothing but frustrating and pointless to me.
I would not recommend this class to people in the future. I felt like the amount of work that was expected was too much for a low level class, where most of the people in it are not history majors. To be fair, she grades fairly and you really do get the grade you work for, but just be warned that there is alot of work that this professor expects.
She is very tough. You need to put in so much time and studying for this class or you will not get a good grade. Some of her comments that she leaves on turnitin is not useful. Trying to email her for help on something is pointless because you get no help in return.
I really liked the class. It's a lot of reading and participation in class and it's lecture-heavy. She's pretty tough on grading her papers but pretty lenient on her grading for quizzes. Just do your reading and participate in the discussions and it'll be a breeze. She also does not like people leaving early and will count you absent if you leave.
Prof Hurford 1151 class is NOTHING but papers and essay tests. The final is NOTHING but essay. If you enjoy and are able to write essays without any help from notes or books then this is the class for you. She also grades incredibly harsh on papers like she is a english professor. I do NOT reccommend taking her.
She definitely makes you work for the grade but it is possible to get an A. Im good at English so it wasnt the hardest thing Ive ever done but prepare to write well, She grades like an English teacher. Lots of work. Hardest of any of the classes Im taking. Shes always available for office hours and very helpful if you need her. No surprises
Dont do it.
Loved her so much I took another one of her classes. SHE SPOON FEEDS YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW. you cannot fail this class I you show up and study. She is very smart and sweet. Lecture heavy and test heavy. You use the book a lot. But its all very easy to memorize for tests. I spent MAYBE an hour a week outside of class. take her classes!
If you are taking this class as a elective DO NOT DO IT. I had to spend way too much of my time on a class I really will not use. This isn't supposed to be an English class OR an honors class but it is in fact both of those things as well as a history class. There are NO lectures, its all learn on your own from a book that isnt the easiest to read.
Did not like this class. She should be teaching a writing class instead of history. Have to write two paragraphs for each definition and must memorize the paragraphs for each one as the exams consist of writing the identities of at least four terms of her choosing of which you do not know which ones until exam time. I DO NOT RECCOMMEND
Do not take her class. Avoid at all cost. Very hard grader and hard class. She makes it close to impossible to finish tests and quizzes because of the time limit. Its all written tests and quizzes. I was so stressed with this online class, it was awful.
She gives test every week and you never know what two terms she wants you to write about. You have to memorize the when, where, why, who, significance and identity of ten topics, because you don't know which ones she's gonna use.
awful
I've taken Prof. Hurford for both my history classes online. The most difficult thing about her course are the midterm and final, which are paper exams, but are definitely doable with a little bit of preparation. She has been thorough and helpful in her grading, and her feedback really helps you course-correct and be able to improve on your work
Appreciated her grading criteria, it was always thorough. However, she graded harsh. Makes you work for a decent grade, much more than you should for an 1st-year class. Exams are hand-written, closed-book ESSAYS. It was about memorization, not learning. She helped when I needed it, and always happy to, but the class was insane for a 1st year class.
I couldnt say what I wanted to say , but just talk to her. If you feel uncomfortable or have something to say to her just tell her.
She is very friendly but you you write papers in this class and that is what the quizzes are. You have to analyze terms and you have two papers that are 40% of your grade. If you don't enjoy writing then I would not take this class and also you will probably read about 120 pages a week in this class.
Would not recommend this professor to anyone, she grades like she doesnt want you to pass the course.
She makes you work SO HARD for a 1st year class...
I have always been good at writing papers but this class has been awful. This whole class is papers. There are quizzes but at the end of each quiz you have to write an essay. I would not take this class again. Also make sure that you are citing everything correctly because if you don't you will be in lots of trouble and may fail the class.
This class was unreasonably demanding for a first year basic history class. She was willing to accept questions and emails that you had, but that did not change the fact that she grades extremely strict.
Dr. Hurford is one of the best history professors ive had, the whole class is pretty much open not which she just started trying out this year. Really cares about her students and a pretty easy grader. Pretty interesting class and she mad it very enjoyable
Professor Hurford definitely makes you work for your grade in her class but if you do the reading and take advantage of the resources she offers its by no means impossible. She cares about you doing well and was always happy to answer my questions. Most of the work was preparing things ahead of time for quizzes, so be ready and take time for that.
Dr. Hurford is extremely nice and so willing to help you but she is by far the toughest grader I've had. she gives a couple of chances for extra credit, in my opinion, her class is too hard for a 3 credit hour class most history classes what you to know dates and events she wants you to elaborate on how events affected group identity class is hard
Dr Hurford is by all means smart and nice... however, for a 3 credit hour class, she will make you WORK and WORK. Every week we have to write a 2-3 page paper about the documents we have read for class (there's extra credit for these). The exams are all extended response!!!! There is so much reading & writing... she as a person is great, but wow.
For a first year history class AND community college ANDD 3 hour credit course, are you serious? It feels like no matter how much I listen to her corrections and apply them, and spend hours working I won't ever ace anything. She's very harsh with her grading, and to be honest I've had more understanding professors than Hurford. Get ready to WORK.
Let me start off by saying she critics my writing more than my English professors. Personally, I think her harshness over a first year history class is unnecessary. She may see it as "preparation" but this work load can lighten up a bit. Don't make students hate history just for being required to take this gen ed.
Unreasonable, rude emails and announcements, does not set her students up for success. The biggest project in this course was a 5-7 page paper based on your opinion of identity and yet she discredits your opinion! Worst professor Ive ever had. Dont waste your money.
As a student with a passion for history, I enjoyed her class. She is a tough grader, but if you follow her requirements and put in the effort, you can get an A, especially with the extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester. Write good notes for lectures, participate in the class discussions and group reviews, and you'll be fine.
Awful. Will shame you for questions she does not find to be "good questions." Blank stares at you when asking a question she does not believe is up to par. Do not show up to her office hours 5 minutes late or she will just send you right out. Shes the absolute worst. Do NOT take her class.
Professor Hurford was one of my favorite professors so far. She really wanted her students to succeed and with her open notes policy (for every quiz and exam), it was easy to do so. She worked hard and gave incredible lectures even with our transition to all online for Covid-19. I would easily take another one of her classes.
She makes us read like our lives depend on it. I have other classes that are more important but can't find time for them because her readings for each week are about 150 pages+ long. It is ridiculous! The weekly quizzes have essay parts and so do exams. She is also unnecessarily strict. Can't turn a paper in twice and shouldn't do so through email.
Great teacher, gives you every opportunity to succeed in her class. Lots of work, but its just busy work, nothing that makes you think too hard. Great class structure as well, highly recommend!
Her rubric for grading papers is some of the most tedious, and asinine I have every seen. Way too many papers. Her grading is too harsh for an undergraduate class. She expects you to analyze papers, but gives you a bad grade if you stay objective. Also no outside sources. She posts the stuff you need in a timely manner, and has extra credit.
Her rating is low because you can't just skirt by in this class, but Dr. Hurford was great. The class was WORK. Quizzes, lots of writing and reading, but if you actually put in the work, you can get an A. I got a 60 on my first essay. She told me what to fix, and I did it, and she replaced my first essay grade with the average of the two
She will taunt you with weekly emails when you get a bad grade on a quiz. When you explain a bad situation, she tells you there are no excuses. For an intro to Hist class, she expects you to put your other classes AND FAMILY to the side. WORST PROFESSOR EVER! TALKS TO YOU LIKE A CHILD!
By far one of the worst experiences in my college career. Very tough grader and while there are rubrics for grading, they are not followed. I had to contact her multiple times for unfair grades which with arguing, she did fix. Overall, find a different professor. Disrespectful and very unnecessary across the board.
If you are not a history person don't take it. Honestly, the class was very much overwhelming. I hated the tests because they were timed and missing one multiple-choice can hurt your score. You have to put in a lot of effort and study time. The professor is a tough grader. The final essay which is 7+ page saved my grade and passed with an A.
Dr. Hurford's class was extremely difficult. It was a lot of reading writing and quiz taking. Some of her grading on papers was ambiguous. I still gave her a 4 due to the fact she was extremely helpful and replied to emails quickly. After doing poorly on quizzes I emailed her and went to her office hours. She helped me and continued email contact.
she is swag, open note everything. thanks for coming to my ted Talk
Everything was easy to understand and she gave good feedback.
If you follow the guidelines of the syllabus, it is an easy A, she is very kind and understanding, definitely talk to her, and she is very willing to help. Participating and paying attention in the weekly discussions help a lot.
One of the best history professor at cscc, if you reach out to her, followed the syllabus, and put in your best into your assignments.
I took Hurford for my early medicine history class. There is clear grading and class expectations set at the beginning of the class. You are able to earn extra credit which helps with the toucher class grading of quizzes and discussion boards. Not a heavy test class and all materials are giving up front. Book was free online.
Multiple students had trouble getting access to the textbook because the bookstore sold out. hurford did not care at all. all this class is is reading and writing. gives terrible feedback; asked questions about a paper and did not get answers. she instead answered with "check the instructions." well, i followed the instructions and got a f.
I barley passed this class. For the majority of the class I was failing and then my grade was saved with the final paper. I would encourage to save all of your notes and stay very organized. You will need info from every chapter and will need to know every chapter in depth to complete the final paper which is 6+ pages. Good luck! Lol
The teacher is NOT helpful and it is hard to pass the class
150+ pages of reading per week. Heavy essays. No feedback on why points are missed on quizzes/tests/essays/discussion boards. Belittling when questions are asked. Dr. Hurford treats this as a much higher level class than just an introductory class.
Treats this class as an advanced level course with LOTS of reading, writing, and no clear feedback. She is not very helpful when approached with questions. Weekly reading (over 150 pages), weekly quizzes (essay and multiple choice), discussion boards, cumulative paper (5-7 pages), midterm (essay), and final (essay).
If you are reading this I would strongly advise you to reconsider choosing her as a professor never have I ever met someone worse than her. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!
DO NOT TAKE HER!! I had a A all up to the end of this class. She didnt like my paper because my view was not the same as her she gave me a F on it and dropped me down to a C. I am in comp 2 now and got a A so, I know my writing is not bad. There are only a few assignments so you can't get a bad grade on any of them.
She does not articulate important criteria for grading and tests. She assigns chapters of reading and the tests are on random and unimportant information you would never remember after covering all of the boring material. Your tests will fell like she closed her eyes, open the chapter and dropped a pencil down on any old stuff within the book.
Do not select her as your instructor. One quiz a week, 2 DBs, and one paper. The grading rubric is listed but not followed. Her communication is very condescending and her notes on assignments give no explanation. She sent a mass email to the class stating how poorly everyone did, yet there's no realization that she may be the problem.
A pleasure to take a class with Professor Hurford - genuinely wants her students to succeed, and is passionate about the subject matter. A course of this nature isn't meant to be an easy grade, but genuine curiosity and a desire to learn will see you through without issue. Wish I could take it again!
Not an introductory class or fair grader - do not take. Every other professor for this class is ranked better. She is degrading, expects perfect work despite class level, and does not have good examples of student work or citations although she instructs you to them when you have a question (examples provided are incorrect).
Horrible Grader. Doesn't say what you got wrong. Takes off points for nothing. Her feedback is filled with grammatical errors and yet she thinks she gets to judge others' writing. If your opinion is different than hers she will take off points. She doesn't grade according to her OWN GRADING requirements on assignments. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!
Too much work for a history class. You have to read around 15-20+ pages of documents and also have to read multiple chapters of the textbook a week. You must write pages of prewritten work (she only chooses 1-2 options from several, so it's mostly pointless) and have all of the documents memorized. The class is formatted in the worst way possible
She is an awful teacher, there is way too much coursework for the class material. She gives back condescending feedback, if any at all, and uses a rubric she doesn't even follow. I would not recommend having her as your professor for World Civ 1, the class is fun and the work isn't too bad but she ruins all the good aspects of it.
I gave myself academic probation so I can evade christiana hurfords wrath. Hurford Haunted me in a dream and told me that I must join her cult. I was screaming and crying. I was petrified. God save us from hurforts wrath.
Mrs. Hurford was by far the worst professor I have ever had. She would give way too much work including a 7 page essay. If I had 3 words to describe this teacher it would be satan 3x. I would very much recommend to not have this horrific professor as she will make her goal to ruin your life in the span of a semester. Would not recommend 0/10.
Lessons are poorly planned.
this professor made me so stressed out that i had a manic episode. my doctor was worried about me because i was so dehydrated from crying. i had to be fed by an iv for a month. i started having hallucinations of her kidnapping me, dragging me into the woods, and practicing demonic rituals on me. i would rather die than take again.
I would not recommend this professor. We had a test every week and would have to write 8, 2 paragraph, identifications in three days, every week along with work from my other classes. We took all of the quizzes before having lecture, so we had to teach ourselves all of the material. Lecture was useless, but required. Take an easier beginner course.
I started having episodes of Christianna taking over my sole I with her demons. I then slipped down the stairs and when I tried to get up christianna grabbed me and snatched me in her van and then started doing rituals from her crazy textbook singing coombsyasoona, I had to say it was one of my most scariest nightmares.
Christianna Hurford is by far the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. Her grading makes no sense and she gives you very vague guidelines with incredibly harsh grading. The example essay she gave us for the paper included a thesis statement she didn't deem appropriate. How backward do you have to be?
If she dosent like you even if your essays are good she will grade it down no matter what L professor
Takes the course way too seriously for an introduction class.
Professor Hurford was very nice and passionate about history. She wants you to pass and does her best to help you if you need it. If you show up to class every week and participate, as well as turn in all of your work you should have no problem passing her class. She can grade on the tougher side but that should not affect your overall success.
Disappointed with a CSCC instructor's approach: lectures were just textbook readings and lacked depth. Forced class participation and insensitive handling of sensitive racial content in a diverse class were major issues. Needs more engaging and thoughtful teaching methods.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! The class isn't meant for you to be working really hard and have stress. I would advise you to read other comments from students who had her class. She doesn't follow her syllabus. She would constantly change it up. Communication is unclear and horrible. She grades harshly and gives the worst feedback. The worst ever.
She said "circa" wasn't a word (when it is) and took points off for that. Long and annoying readings, she's like a demon. Don't take her unless you can stay up all night reading and writing.
Beware of this professor. From the start of the semester she will claim to be your biggest cheerleader but when you email her asking for help, or even grading concerns. You will be met with a condescending email about whatever your asking about. like other have stated grading and feedback is very inconsistent, Take at own risk.
The LAZIEST and most DEMANDING "professor" ever. She will have you write pages and pages of notes that could probably be in a different language, and she wouldn't even notice. Her grading is based on an unspecified scale that you cannot see until after the assignment has been graded.
Look for another professor. She relies heavily on you reading multiple chapters of the textbook and doesn't have a real lecture. She grades heavily on essays and is extremely unhelpful and rude when you do ask for help. She'll just keep repeating the syllabus and adding more to it as the class goes on. She deserves a lower rating honestly.
Her grading system makes no sense and it's very different from the limited rubrics she gives. Also discussions over the topics are after tests and that makes very little sense. Overall this is a poorly planned class and it feels like it's just an afterthought to the professor.
Terrible professor, unorganized class, and unable to reach outside of class time. I strongly consider not taking this course, the content and material are fun and interesting but entirely ruined by her incoherent ramblings. Picks her favorites at the start of the semester and constantly picks them to speak in a class where participation is graded.
It's weird to see such bad reviews for Professor Hurford. I had a really good experience with her. There are 6 essays you have to write total (5 unit essays, lowest score gets dropped, and the final paper) If you don't prefer writing over exams - do not take this class. The discussions are easy too, you get credit for saying a sentence.
She's awful and is a very tough grader on essays. She would never respond to emails. She sent an email to the whole class outing that everyone wasn't doing good on the essays. Was rude during her tutoring sessions and wasn't very helpful. Do not take this class.
who do you think you are.
She's nice and approachable at the beginning of the semester, but she gets passive-aggressive and basically is inaccessible by the end. Class is structured weirdly...you end up writing 9 essays and she's very hard on grading. You're expected to read a crazy amount of a textbook that makes no sense. Way too hard for an intro-level class. DO NOT TAKE
Opinions on Professor Hurford seem mixed - some love her passion for history, while others find her disorganized and harsh in grading. Attending class and staying on top of the work is key. Unstuck ai may help with prep.
I had a terrible experience in this class. She was unforgiving if you were just 2-3 minutes late, you would lose 15 points for the mandatory discussions. I skipped my cousin's funeral to get the points because of the times I was late. While there were many extra credit opportunities, she did not give me full credit on a survey, which made no sense.
I'm surprised she's even managed to get a 2 star rating. You have to read multiple chapters of a boring textbook every week and write essays based on a silently changing rubric. You will get a bad grade on the essays no matter what, because she takes this class way too seriously for basic history. Definitely recommend it if you like being miserable
Dr. Hurford was very structured and held high standards for assignments. The directions were always very clear and the papers were easy to write if you did the readings. The readings were at a college level of understanding, this class just requires you to use your brain and not do multiple choice questions. Lots of extra credit opportunities too.
I am confused on the many negative reviews. She has been my favorite so far! She knows her stuff. She is tough, but fair. You have to do the reading, show up to class, and be able to write papers at a college level. In class discussions help to break down things not understood in the text book. I learned a lot in this class.
She was by far the worst professor I have ever had in any class. She is rude/condescending. She told me I was a distraction to the class because I was taking notes on my laptop. Mind you I have ADHD and autism, the only way I am able to stay focused if I am actively taking notes. She knew this and did not care.
If you are thinking about taking American History with her- RUN. Run as far as you can and never look back. She is an incredibly harsh grader and will give you a bad grade on any essay. The criteria is ever changing and she won't give you a straight answer on why you got a bad grade. Also incredibly unforgiving and condescending.
This class didn't have a million of assignments to turn in, I'll give her that, but it was annoying and boring with the repetitiveness of the essays. She grades pretty hard but is also lenient with a late and redo pass. Multiple choice are meh just take notes. Lots of book reading! Five essays, five quizzes, two db and one paper. 1000 point class
Gives so much extra credit and drops your lowest grade!
She was a good professor, her instructions were very clear.
A fantastic online class to take. Easy class work, not much time needed to pass this class. I only spent 3 hours or less each week to get an A. She is so nice, and communicates wonderfully the entire class. One of the best classes I've taken in my life. If you enjoy writing essays, take this class! Everything is open note!!
I really enjoyed this professor. Attendance and participation were both very important as well as having your notes out and ready. She was also very supportive and caring at the end of the day.
Gives lots of extra credit oppurtunities and some leeway is within the class. So much writing and reading! Beware if you just want to take an entry level history as much of the work is in depth. Professor is knowledgeable and encouraging, lots of work though!
Totally forgot to check here before signing up her class. But, I suggest whoever is going to take her think twice. I didn't study this hard for my math classes and I easily passed with an A. She's taking a history class way too seriously and is just too frustrating. She takes points off by a lot for very simple stuff and not clear what she wants.
In short, this class only has papers. You have tests that are 45 minutes long with 2 questions that you write out paragraphs for. Though these are open note, sitting and spending hours writing out notes from the CSCC Yawp over 'key terms' just to have her nitpick your grade is going to ruin your mental health. This class is a second English class.
