She gives very clear lectures and offers help to everyone who needs it. Her midterms are very TOUGH though. I did all the homework thoroughly but there's some stuff on the midterms that was bizaare.

going to lectures helps a lot
Prof Johnson is extremely helpful and clear. Midterms aren't too bad if you attend lecture and read the book.
i dont know what you ppl are talking about but she is pretty easy. i recommend you ppl to take her. she is a very VERY clear lecturer. im glad she teaching Chem 6bl instead of Ball.
This Professor is really good with her lectures. Tests are not too bad, she even gives extra credit to help you out. I recommend taking her. Although she wouldn't be able to answer the more challenging questions. =)
Christina is great, be sure to go to all the lectures.. she curves the grades and gives you cheat sheets, most of the tests are based on the hw but the midterms and the final you need to study for
DONT LISTEN TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO'S ALREADY GETTING A's IN THE CLASS. i had her for chem 6A and 6B, totally ruined my interest for chemistry. she doesn't explain a lot of things in class, and her exams are just copied from Dr. Hoeger's tests. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IF U WANNA LEARN CHEMISTRY!!!
She gives very clear lectures, and I've learned more chem from this class than any other. She encourages her students to do well, and she has a sense of humor too. And she's young.. so she can relate to us better. However, her tests were very difficult.. otherwise, I recommend this professor.
Prof Christina is a good lecturer. Her demos are cool, and she does the best to keep the class interesting. Her tests aren't bad, you just need to make sure that you're prepared by understanding everything that she goes over in lecture. The curve helps A LOT!!
Prof Johnson is awesome!!! She is by far my favorite professor I've had so far at UCSD. She finds a way to explain difficult concepts. She really cares about students and is always willing to go over something if someone doesn't understand it. She rewards those who put in the hard work.
Prof. Johnson's class is very easy (too bad she requires you to do homework). She's a very good lecturer (compared to the other chem profs on campus) I definitely reccomend taking her class.
Professor Johnson's lectures are clear and easy to understand. She's by far the best lecturer I've had so far at UCSD. Her midterms are are sort of hard but you'll do fine with the curve if you study. I would definately sign up for another one of her classes if I could.
Dr. J is the coolest cat at UCSD. Great lecturer, very sharp. She is tough and keeps control of the class. Turn off your cell phones! Take her class and go to her OH. She will always take time to help you. (And the person above who didn't like her is very confused, don't listen to that person!)
Tina's the coolest. She transformed our class into one that everyone hated to one that everyone loved. We never got punished for failed expts. She took the time to walk around labs every day, which is more than anybody else. She relates well to us and is incredibly flexible-Best Chem Prof of my 3 years here, by far!
This is one of the most annoying classes ever. I felt like I was back in high school when this teacher took attendence(with RADs) and required homework checks. She's a nice teacher, though, don't get me wrong and she gives extra credit. But it definitely an annoying class to have at 9:30 am.
She really cares about her students and is super generous with points. She gives a bunch of extra credit and her curve is really generous. The average grade on the curve was a B, which was ridiculously good for us. Sometimes her lecture had very little to do with the homework since she goes over concepts, but that's what she goes ove rthe most.
I've repeated this class (and dropped) but among them, she was the best prof. She makes everyone to attend class by giving out in class problems which are counted towards grade (you get points by just doing it; she gives answers), but that helped a lot. Her lectures are very clear and the examples are helpful when reviewing. Curve was generous too.

she's a super di duper number one super-star. Basically everyone got B's, even the kids who failed everything but got the xtra credit RAD points. She's kind of strict, but it's cool.
Dr. J is probably one of the best lecturer's in the chem dept. short of Professor Sailor. She's friendly, has a sense of humor, and speaks fluent english, which is a rare quality at UCSD. Mandatory homework, but you'll need to do it anyway because she's not kidding when she says her exams are difficult.
She's super awesome!!! She's the best professor that I've taken in Chemistry. Her tests aren't that hard if you just look at your notes and go to class. She gives extra credit right and left. If you need any chem class, take hers!!!
a great professor that really does care about you learning while making lecture fun. Not an easy class but definetly workable
WOW!!! I must agree with all posts before, she's super woman! the best Chemistry Professor you'll ever find at UCSD. She's loving and caring! Tests are challenging though, but if you do your work you should do fine. I cant express how awesome she is, one of a kind. Better yet, best SCIENCE professor I've ever encounter.WONDERFUL, A+ in teaching.
Best professor I've had in my four years at UCSD. Dr Johnson is motivational, intelligent, and gets really excited when we discuss lab data. Great sense of humor. Labs are pretty easy if you did the reading, very few demands for the course - take it over 112A anyday!
Very very good lecturer.. by far the best I've had at UCSD. She is very clear and explains the material very well. Her midterms weren't too bad but her final was pretty hard but she's very fair in distributing grades. Highly recommend Prof. Johnson
She is by far the greatest professor I've ever had. She really looks at you as a person worth teaching something to and interacting with. Truly a pleasure to have as a professor and the only I'll ever really remember when I leave UCSD. Fair tests & expectations. She's got a pretty cool system of peer editing for labs. You will love her!
Best chem prof Ive had. Gives ample extra credit. Going to class is imp. I am a terrible chemistry student, but she made class interesting and understandable. Exams are difficult, but reasonable. Final was very hard, but class was curved. Highly recommend!!!
Easily one of the best profs in the department, geniunely cares about every student's ability to learn the material. Exams are difficult, (so study!), but there's a pretty generous curve. Great lecturer, too.
Very good lecturer. I did horrible in the class but that was my fault (and that of a ridiculously high curve) not hers.
heres what i think ucsd should do, they should setup a class for the professors that cant teach chem which is all of them, and Johnson should teach them chem and how to be a teacher, all the rest of the chem teachers stupid ****s dont take them, Johnson love u da best
nicest woman you'll ever meet at UCSD, AND she's one of the best professors here. Her tests are a little hard, but thats because she teaches well and expects alot from you. Very fair and gives extra credit. And if you ever TA for her, she'll give you pizza. =D
Best chem professor in UCSD. Great lecturer with awesome sense of humor. She's very interactive with students and always clear and helpful. I don't like chemistry at all but I enjoy the class very much. I even began to suspect I like organic chemistry now.
I hate chem, but Johnson was a really good teacher. She gives a lot of extra credit and curves very generously, which helps for people who suck at chem. She's also really nice, clear, prepared, organized, and approachable.
I absolutely loved Professor Johnson. She gave lots of extra credit and curved generously. Even though her tests were relatively hard, studying lecture notes and reading the text will get you at least a high B.
She's such an awesome teacher. She makes the class very interesting. Her quizzes are fair. She gives you extra credits :) Overall, I love Chemistry again because of her wonderful teaching.
she's a really good chemistry teacher. she knows what she's talking about, and she explains everything well. the quizzes and midterms are hard, but if you study your ass of the day before, you'll do fine. if you do your homework each time it's assigned, youll be fine, too. she gives points just for going to class!!!
She is a great teacher. Very clear in her lectures. Very nice person. Gives a lot of extra credit. Generous on the curves.
very happy & exciting professor. she sets up experiments 2 show & explain what happens. She wants all of her students 2 pass. She uses the grade curve a lot so u have more of a chance 2 get a better grade. Very important 2 go 2 lectures cause Johnson has everyone click in w/ their R.A.D so that all who are in lecture, get participation. points.
FABULOUS teacher. Explains thoroughly with good examples, always tries to help students, and gives fair exams and extra credit. The BEST teacher I've had this quarter. 100% recommendation.
She is a cool person, fun to be in class with. I wasnt interested in Chem at all (it was a GE) but she made me somewhat interested. Her midterms and final were somewhat difficult but could be figured out if I had any motivation to do well in the class. Take her and you'll learn a lot, its guaranteed. Alot of EC
Great professor! Truly cares about her students. She is so sweet and easy to approach. Very accessible for office hours. Exams are a bit hard, but if you study and pay attention in class you'll be fine; plus you'll come out of the class actually learning/remembering a lot! She's extremely fair with curves/extra credit! She's a MUST for CHEM!
I was definitely not excited about taking chemistry, but professor Johnson made chemistry easy to understand and practice. She is enthusiastic about the topic, which makes her class interesting and you really should attend her lectures. some of the topics are repetitive of high school chemistry, but there are definitely new topics to learn.
Very good teacher. I recommend reading the book before attending lecture though, because she goes at a very quick pace, so sometimes it can be difficult to keep up. However, she obviously cares deeply about teaching, and tries her best to make sure you understand the topic. Highly recommended.
Great teacher. Recommend 100%.
very good chem teacher. keeps your interests and cares a lot for her students. it helps to read through the material before lecture and keeping up on the homework. her grading system is set up to where if u attend lecture and work hard you'll do well in the class
Homework graded on completion. 20 extra credit points from the clicker will replace lowest quiz score. Lowest midterm will also be dropped. My final was in mandeville auditorium..theater seats! = comfortable.
Even though I got a C in the class cause I wasnt good with the tests and my TA was just really unfriendly and unwilling to help, I like Ms. Johnson alot. She is an AWESOME teacher and will definitely make you wanna go to class and thats hard to do. Also she gives out sooooo much extra credit. Plus she also lets you have a crib sheet.
Very good professor..very clear when teaching and generous when it comes to grades.. if you go to class, read the text, and do the homework, it's not hard to get an A
Very VERY good teacher!! She explains everything really clear and does a lot of examples. Her midterms are very fair if you do the homework. She gives out extra credit points and curves generously. She's an awesome teacher and will really help you!!
Dr. Johnson is one of the best teachers! She is so nice and very helpful, she really wants her students to learn and understand the material. Also, TA Erin was the best TA so if you can try to get her. If you do the homework and understand the concepts behind each problem that really helps. Take her!!!
easy to understand, gives extra credit in class, has mandatory hw due in discussion and quizzes every 2 weeks. hw is a pain if left uunnn attended midterms arent as hard as the quizzes
Dr. Johnson is a great teacher. She cares about her students, very good at teaching, and she's funny too. Take her class!
very accessible in answering questions. she provides a forum in which anyone can ask any question and she usually answers within 24 hours.
Dr. Johnson is AMAZING. Her grading system makes chem much less stressful because it's forgiving. Her lectures are clear, she gives participation points for going to lecture and has her TAs provide review sessions for the exams. Erin the TA is also AMAZING. Get her if you can.
johnson is an excellent professor and knows exactly what she's talking about. her chalkboard-style teaching really makes you take good notes. her tests are pretty hard, but you get a cheat sheet. good luck, this was my hardest class
Great Professor. Easy. Everything is curved. There are a lot of extra credit.
excellent professor. she lectures very clearly. gives tons of extra credit. i did very poorly on my first midterm but i still got an a- IF YOU CAN TAKE HER CLASS!
Professor Johnson is so pretty, the first day of class I couldn't even tell she was a professor. She's so nice and funny. Sometimes she'll give you hints on what's going to be on the test with a little twist to it. She's amazing. She knows her stuff and explains it very well.
She's the best chemistry professor ever. She's so nice and her lectures are really easy to understand. However her midterms and finals are pretty difficult (finals literally killed me in 6A). TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Prof Johnson made the class actually interesting. I learned stuff from her class which is amazing.
Prof johnson =( sorry for not buying a rad and leaving the final early with out checking my work. Don't feel sorry about running over that rain deer and coming late to class that one day. Next time ILL GET AN A+!!! remember dipole moments can be calculated by this formula: integral(r*p(r)dv), where p(r) is the volume charge density.
Tough class, Johnson is good.
This class was super easy. The teacher speaks clearly and is always upbeat. Demonstrations are also very cool. Take this class with this professor.
Awesome professor. Easily the best chemistry professor I had. She makes everything really easy to understand and she does great demonstrations.
TAKE HER FOR THIS CLASS! she's really good at lecturing! as long as you attend all the lectures and do your homework, you'll be fine! good curve and a lot of extra credits. she's the BEST!!!
She's the best! Genuinely cares about her students and wants them to learn. She's very quick to respond to e-mails. Her tests are pretty tough though, but you learn a lot from her. Also she gives out a lot of extra credit and is very generous with the curves, which always helps.
Great prof! Takes the time to listen to her students and help them. Class can be hard, but not impossible. Do the HW
Johnson is one of the best! You will learn in her class if you want the A. She gives out a lot of extra credit and her grading is generous. Take her if you want to learn and because she is amazing!
I respect Dr. Johnson a lot as a teacher because she knows what students struggle with, and really makes an effort to prepare you for future chem classes- her class is a solid foundation for fundamental concepts. Trying and practicing definetely will pay off (she sometimes even uses HW probs on tests). She's the cream o' the crop for gen. chem
Excellent professor. Knows her stuff very well. Very helpful in office hour. She cares about her students. Downside is that this class is HARD. Take this class only if you are prepared to do the work. Lots of extra credits...they help out a lot. A must take for general chem.
She's the best! I had for the whole Chem6 series. 6a, got a B, but after learning her style of teaching (which is awesome) I've gotten A-'s in 6B and 6C. She cares about her students and gives lots of extra credit! Tests may be kinda hard, but if you attend lectures, they aren't so bad! She's really nice, by far MY FAVORITE teacher at UCSD!
never liked chem in high school but Dr. Johnson made the class interesting. The midterms are not as hard as the quizzes you take in discussion and the curve is very generous so it's difficult to not pass her class!
Best general chemistry professor at UCSD (her classes are always full for a reason). If you go to class and do the homework you're golden. She's super helpful and really wants you to do well so if you don't it's really your own fault.
I Love Johnson! Seriously though.. I think I love her. She is by far the best chemistry teacher you will ever take in your life. Her lectures are REALLY useful, and fun. Attendance is mandatory because if you have good attendance, she will drop your lowest quiz (at least she did with our class). Also, her office hours are extremely useful!
Best general chemistry professor you can find at UCSD. Pay attention in lecture, go to section, and most importantly do all the homework and practice tests. There's no excuse to not get an A in her class.
Professor Johnson is the BEST chemistry teacher I have ever had.I highly recommend her.Her lectures are very helpful, which is good because her tests are pretty hard.even if you fail a test you still have a chance to get a good grade in the class due to her extra credit opportunities, attendance, quizzes,& homework grades. She is very nice.Take her!
w07.go to class, begining to end, gives out clicker points.dont leave early/come late.thats when she gives the most.E/C points add up alot. mostly concept stuff.didnt like it much. chem6b was pretty hard, just hope u get a really good TA. u learn more from doing problems, u should take hoeger instead. other than that u should take her.
Take it. It's worth it. Easy and nice.
I'm in my third quarter of chem now (with Hoeger) and I can say that she is by far my favorite chem prof at UCSD. She understands students and makes the impossible content understandable. Go to office hours, she is incredibly nice and wants to help! I wish I could still take her. Here tests though, midtersm = REALLY hard, final = IMPOSSIBLE!
One of the best professors I've had. She's very helpful and is really concerned about her students. Her quizzes/tests have no suprises on them, you've seen everything before. If you study, you'll do well
She is the best professor I have had thus far. She is genuinely kind and always there to help. She doesn't have any tricks in her bag, and does her best to allow her students to succeed. If you go to lecture, you'll do great. She even gives you problems that may be on the quiz/test. If you have to wait to take chemistry with her, it's worth it!!!
I have done so much better in Johnson's class than I did in 6A/6B with Hoeger. She is a great lecturer, makes things clear and facilitates note-taking...even makes things interesting with the occasional experiment in class. She makes chem more "user-friendly" and I wish I had taken her for all of the 6 series! You will not regret taking her class!
Prof. Johnson seems nice in class, but her tests are impossible. They used to be reasonable when I took her in chem 6a, but she must have figured out that they are easy. If you want to ruin your gpa this is the class for you.
her class was bearable for 6a. but in chem6b, it was hell. Her entire personality changed, the tests became impossible and she never explained herself. DONT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL. take a different prof, end of story
i took her for chem6b because I wanted to know what everyone was ranting about how shes the best teacher in the world, but she really just turned out to be average, dont expect an A or something high, if you want that i suggest another teacher
Professor Johnson is the best chemistry lecturer I've met. She makes her lectures interesting. Going to her lectures can make study easier than reading the text, although reading the text is somehow helpful. Students who want to learn Chemistry easier (who doesn't) should take her class. She also gives extra points to encourage students. TAKE HER.
Professor Johnson is more than likely one of the best Chemistry professors for the general chem series. However, her tests are rather difficult and perhaps impossible - TA quizzes are nothing compared to her exams.
she is well prepare for her lecture and all but her midterms are so hard! yet she gives out couple of extra point opportunities that worth 1 or 2 points toward the tests so try not to skip classes especially on fridays!
She is AMAZING! Very straight forward with the material, cares about the students, very approachable, and extremely helpful in OH! Pretty much gives you the answers to her midterms and final with all her experiments. Not to mention she gives A LOT of extra credit which helps at the end of the quarter. Overall great professor and would RECOMMEND her
EXTREMELY helpful professors. Crystal clear. Tests are fair. Curves are generous and gives lots of extra credits and RAD points! Johnson (6A) -- Kummel (6B) -- Hoeger (6C) and you'll be master of general chemistry.
Professor Johnson genuinely cares about her students and she makes class interesting with demonstrations. If she didn't drop one final I probably would be getting a C in the class instead of a B. I think the curve is pretty tough though since she does drop the lowest midterm (everyones grades go up) and depends on your situation how you benefit.
Perfect Chem (actually if she was good at other subjects) professor to start out with (so you don't lose hope, yet) or just hope you have her all the time...she's amazing...what student wouldn't want to be woken up by loud fire explosions and chemical experiments galore IN CLASS not that you'll ever fall asleep in her class (50mins)..not to mention
Good lectures, covers the material in the textbook thoroughly. The professor expects students to know concepts, so study, but her tests are not unreasonable.
OK SAY IT WITH ME ALWAYS TAKE JOHNSON!! She is the best chem prof ever, she explains everything very well and her tests are not unreasonable she just wants you to know the material. Go to lecture are read the book and this class is should not be that hard to pass, Plus she's fantastic.
Holy cow was this class hard! If you're like me and don't have tơ much of a chem background, pray that you get Johnson, because by the time you leave her class, you will have a gơd understanding of the material. However, you HAVE to do the work. I probably studied for chem more than any other subject...ever. Putting in almost 20 hrs/week
I did very well on my AP Chem in highschool. This college level Chemistry is SO HARD. Her lectures are very helpful. But you have to do the work. It means mastering all homework problems, and attending all sections. Her TA's are awesome!!!My TA was Chris Kim and he was really helpful! The difficulty of her exam discouraged me a lot, but I survived
One of the best chem professors at UCSD. Has a clear, energetic voice and she does good board work and examples. Gets a lot of use out of webct where you can ask questions about hw and tests. Really tries to help you at office hours, making sure you understand the problems.
Best chem prof at UCSD, ever. Shows deep concern for students understanding of the material. Tests are reasonable. You HAVE to do the hw (and understand it!) if you want to do well in this class. Lectures really hold your attention. Definitely take Johnson!
I had a lot of different chem. professors at UCSD but Johnson is the best. Hoeger is good, but his tests are unfair. Dr. Johnson will grade you fairly but you still need to do your homework to really understand the material. Finally, go to every lecture, when you get your grade at the end of the quarter you'll not regret it.
I had this professor for both Chem 6A, and Chem 6B. She is very clear and very receptive to her students. The problem is that EVERYONE wants to take lectures from her because of her extra credit and enormous curve. This leaves the other chem professors with half-filled classrooms and 10-person wait lists for Johnson. Very difficult to get into.
Hard class in general but good professor. Don't expect though that she will make chemistry much more easier for you to understand. In the end, it's up to you to work at learning the material. She does, however offer a substantial curve and a lot of extra credit. Don't expect, again however, that these things will dramatically boost your grade.
If your going to take her class MAKE SURE you do the homework and especially the integrated problems in the back. She's an amazing professor but don't expect an easy A, you have to work for it.
Accept what everyone says, she is the best chem teacher, nuff said. Shes inspirational and wants you to do well while teaching you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Her curves are awesome so there should be no complaints except that her OH are very very cramped because the whole nation comes...
To the previous poster, the curve won't be as wonderful as you think. Johnson drops everyone's lowest midterm which will increase the Average dramatically. This typically gives people that have 70% high hopes for the A and get VERY confused after the B- they received. Just do well on one midterm and ace your quizzes. Read the book as well.
she explains the material very well, and she's very generous with extra credit. but her tests are definitely hard. still, a great teacher overall. you should take her (if you can get into the class).
Dr. Johnson is a great professor! Her lectures are clear and concise and she explains things very well! Her tests are little tricky, but they are fair. I enjoyed her course very much and wished I could have taken her for the rest of the six series.
Best general chem prof. I ever had! Her lectures are easy to understand, and very entertaining. Her exams are tough but possible. Even the TA's that she picked are awesome. Wish I took her for 6A and 6B as well... take her if you ever have the chance!
Pretty much all the problems in the test were presented at least once in lecture. Overall, just go to class, pay attention, take notes, and you'll do fine. Listening to podcasts is a GREAT way to review if you didn't get everything in lecture. Reading the book is not really necessary, but doing homework will help a lot in reinforcing concepts.
She is possibly the best professor at UCSD. Take her if you can get into her class. Hard professor but she makes sure you learn the material and in a fun way!
so overrated. goes way too fast. tests are way too difficult.
overrated. she's not a bad but she wasn't spectacular either. she knows what she's teaching if you do what she tells you to do, you'll get A/B. usually has 1-2 tricky questions on exam. the rest isn't so bad. fyi. 1st midterm is MUCH harder than her 2nd(probably to scare students)gives E.C., curves & lets you drop one midterm to boost your grade.
Yeah, she is overrated like the below poster says. Should have gone with Kummel when I had the chance. Very HARD tests, she does easy examples in class which do not correlate to the exams. Expects us to know 100% of the basics PLUS master any obscure question given. Final Exam was killer, ALL multiple choice Well, at least she does podcasts though.
examples in class are helpful for me but the questions on exams are WAYYYYYYYY harder than the examples given in class. doing the practice problems doesnt help me much cuz she will write the questions in a different way just to confuse you. her exams are HARDDD but there is curve and some xtra credit... she IS OVERRATED
johnson is by far my favorite professor at ucsd. i absolutely dreaded genchem, but you might as well take johnson since the class needs to get done anyways. shes great at explaining things and is very helpful. although her tests are tough, the curve helps balance it out.
"after today's lecture you should be able to do the follwing 17 problems tonight." WRONG. avoid if you don't have 30 hours /week to devote to this ONE class
Great professor, very nice, and very helpful if you need her. She's really clear about what she wants you to know, but you have to study pretty hard and actually use your brain to get A/B. Do your homework, and you get a cheatsheet on tests. I got B+ all three times I had her -_-. I probably would have Aced other Chem 6 classes.
She is pretty overrated. I came into the class thinking i'll get an easy A since all the reviews of her were really positive. She is alright, I think other professors might be easier than her. She is not too easy but not impossible to get an A either. I got an A- both quarters She gives extra credit but that is basically the "curve" for the class.
WAAAAAY OVER RATED! Honestly, I was expecting something amazing based on the reviews but.... was deceived. She is far to over rated.
A pretty frustrating class to take. My guess is i'll get an A and have learned nothing except memorizing useless solubility tables. Focuses on very questionable aspects of the class. She also constantly complains about the textbook and doesn't give very clear notes herself.
AMAZING professor. period. You definitely have to work for the grade but it is SO worth it at the end. Her lectures are excellent (cool demos!!) and the tests were HARD. If you really understand the material and keep up with hw and lectures, you will end up with the grade you deserve because there is an amazing curve.
Overrated. The stuff she focuses on is mostly useless. Not the worst, but not good
very very good professor!!! lectures are clear with many examples. Tests are easy if you come to lecture and do homework..many questions are straight form clicker q's or hw q's and you get a CHEAT SHEET!!! definitely recommend her highly!!
READ this. I was like you, reading these comments, and this class was a nightmare. Although she is friendly, the curriculum is difficult, & her problems on midterms/final are tricky and complicated. Her lectures are too fast-paced and it was not only me. If you looked around lecture, 90% were lost. If anything, take this with OASIS if you can.
Pay not attention to all these positive remarks...this class was hell. Lectures were incomprehensible and unhelpful, on top of it my TA sucked hard. Yes, she does give extra credit and a crib sheet but these won't make that much of a difference in the long run. If you want a decent grade in this class especially with this professor, got to OASIS
Keep up with the class or you will fall behind in a heartbeat. 1st midterm is is infamous killer. In retrospect, it wasn't so bad. Difficulty came from maladjustment mostly. 2nd midterm is a joke. Finals are very exciting to do, honestly. If you have studied, you will have fun blasting the final away!
I HATED this class but appreciate it afterwards. The effort that got me an A in 6B with a different prof got me a 43% on Dr Johnson's first midterm. To get even a B+ in her class you really need to temporarily devote your life to chem (or be a genius. there were like 20 of them that quarter) But you'll be pretty cool with the 1UP you have on oth
I HATED this class but appreciate it now. Effort that got me an A in 6B with different prof got me a 43% on her first midterm. To get a B+ in her class you really need to temporarily devote your life to chem (or be an annoying genius) But you'll be pretty cool with the 1UP you have on others in ANY subsequent science class or standardized test.
She is a really fair and detailed professor. Her lectures are helpful and if you gi to all her lectures, do homework, study the examples given from the lecture ( esp. Clicker question) you will get an A. Some ppl complained that shes hard but id sayif you do all the work you will rly learn somethinf!! Take her!!!!!
Take Hoeger.
Honestly, don't get your expectations up. She's way overrated, I'd say take Kummel or Hoeger if I had to do it again. She says here midterms are hard to make her final seem easy - but her final is way harder. Don't get your hopes up.
Clear during lecture, but goes too fast to really learn during lecture. Assigns too much homework that isn't conducive to learning the material, only getting it completed asap. Quizzes subject to TA, so if your TA sucks, you're screwed. You have no idea how she curves until the very end so you have no idea how you're doing. Don't take her.
Yes, she's an enthusiastic professor, but if you're like me, and you don't entirely "grasp" the material from 6A&B, please DON'T TAKE HER. You will have to devote so much of your time just to finish the online hw..Exams are tough. Crib sheet (the cheat sheet we can bring to exams) doesn't help me much.
She is an amazing teacher. Yes her class is hard, but definitely manageable. If you are smart and have taken chem in high school you're fine. Her demos are awesome!
Dr. Johnson is very nice and really makes an effort to help her students. However, I did not particularly like her as a lecturer because she spends most of class solving example problems on the docucam. Her tests are fairly difficult but the generous curve normalizes everything. Overall, she is a solid instructor but not a personal favorite.
Professor Johnson is very helpful in presenting different problem sets on different difficulty levels. Even though her quizzes are a bit on the hard side, but it motivates students to study harder and pay more attention in class. Her clever use of humor keeps students interested in class without sacrificing clarity.
Her first time teaching Ochem at UCSD. Awesome and well-organized class! The class definitely isn't easy, but she won't expect you to know anything she didn't go over. However, knowing everything that was in lecture is not good enough; you need to be GOOD at what you know! That being said, Ochem is just like that in general.
good teacher, but she is really hard, be warned
Best professor I've had at UCSD.
This was her first time teaching Organic, and 140B is a very difficult class. She taught it well and I feel very prepared for 140C. I had Whitesell for 140A (although I got an A)so I wasn't as prepared coming into 140B, but with the way Dr. Johnson taught, I was able to get back on track for this class.
Best professor yet. She was so helpful and supportive (and always put her Chem 6A students before the O-Chem ones at Office Hours). Extremely down to earth and respected our hard work and the difficulty of the class. Plan to take her for the entire series and O-Chem if possible! Exams were challenging but she has a VERY decent curve.
Her exams were actually hard. On the second midterm, the class average was like 50%. But there are curves, so it is quite easy to get a decent grade if you are well over average. Her class had really flexible grading options, so mistakes were not deadly. Also, I could feel that she really cares about her students.
Best Professor ever! I really love taking her class.
She is a professor conjured by the gods. Super concise and you can tell she cares. You actually learn in her class instead of just remembering and regurgitating info back. She's difficult, but encouraging. Easy to talk to but runs a tight ship. If you have a chance to take her, DO IT. Someone give her a raise.
Johnson is a very nice and passionate professor for chemistry, but she makes it very difficult. However, the curve is very generous (56% average). My suggestion is to stay on top of the game and you will be fine.
Take her.
Dislike her way of teaching. Sh e focuses primarily on practice problems and example problems when she hardly spends 2 seconds on the concepts and ideas. She doesn't lecture with any intention to make the material understandable and goes at a rapid pace. Her tests are brutal. Curves are generous, however. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
She is not as organized and professional as I would have liked, since she got much of her course structure from Dr Hoeger. But she's smart, empathetic, and knows how to teach well.
Best professor I've ever had. Decent grader, helps you when you're lost with the material, just awesome. Difficult exams and quizzes but put the effort into her class and you'll get the grade you deserve.
Not a personal favorite she focuses on the mathematical side of Chem during lecture but tests mostly on concept and critical. I think that is why the averages are always low. The curve normalizes everything though and extra credit and bonus points.
Just AMAZINg
I really like professor Johnson. She is really fun and a really good teacher. Her lecture notes aren't really in depth so you have to go to the book and really understand the material. Her tests are hard but if you take advantage of her TAs, old exams, office hours, and lecture notes, then you will do fine.
She puts a lot of emphasis on the (very tedious) mathematical side of chemistry. Exams are balls deep hard, esp free responses. But honestly with the time and effort to really study, class is not impossible. Had no clue what my grade would be until after the quarter is over. Tries her best to help her students pass. SHES GREAT BUT REALY HARD :(
She is very kind and helpful. Her lecture style helps me focus, and I really learn something.
Professors don't get any better than her to be quite honest. I have a thorough knowledge of Chem 6B after this class. Midterms are tough but very rewarding.
Got a B- in her 6A class and now worried I might not pass her 6B... for sure could've put in more effort but friends with other profs had it way easier. Exams are brutal, come out of every one feeling more&more discouraged. I like a lot her as a person but save your grade and take another prof
She's seriously the best. Of course you'll need to put in your own hard work. Generally just as everyone's said, tests are really really hard, but VERY generous amount of extra credit and she really cares, which is not something every professor gives the impression of
Her lectures are really helpful, but the tests are super hard; however the curves are really beautiful, and there are a lot of extra points.
I love pro. Johnson! She's the one who makes me believe what hope is. Her exams are hard and I was so worried about passing the course or not. But, I didn't give up, I tried, even though I still didn't do so well. Pro. Johnson never give up on her students. So, please don't give up. Just try yout best no matter what!
Review iclicker questions and examples she gives in class for midterms and final(ESP for the final). Make a list of them. Podcast helps because she gives rules which are not written down on screen for example, Ksp rules, etc. Curve is generous. Quizes given in discussion and is curved in YOUR own discussion.
Best professor at UCSD. Hands down. You will certainly work for your A but when you walk out of her class there's no doubt that you actually understand the fundamentals of chemistry which is extremely crucial for any science majors going. Definitely take if given the opportunity! But don't miss class cause iclicker definitely helps your grade!
Dr. Johnson still remains one of the best professors I have taken at UCSD. Though difficult, nobody can deny that she knows what's she's talking about and that she knows how to teach. She speaks incredibly quickly, so watching her video podcasts is a must. Her lectures are crystal clear.
If you do not take Dr. Johnson, you will regret it. She is fast paced, but she records her lectures on podcast with video and audio, so you have no excuses for missing something. She is the most well balanced professor I've ever had: she is unbelievably approachable, but also has my utmost respect. Hands down, best professor I've ever had.
Best chemistry professor! This was my second time taking chem 6B and for once I understood what I was doing. She gives you multiple chances to bring your grade up if you failed a quiz or midterm. Very fair tests, but you must understand the chem to do well- regurgitating info won't work in this class
Dr. Johnson is probably the best gen chem professor you can take at UCSD (and I've heard that she's just as great of an ochem prof as well). Exams are challenging but she's really approachable, understanding, and helpful.
The class is hard in general. But, what's important is the high curve at the end of the quarter. Dr. Johnson always encourages her students to keep on trying. Your effort reall do count in her class. You may fail her tests, but, as long as you complete the homework, you should pass the class just fine.
She is simply the best. She wants you to succeed; her class will force you to fully understand the material, but she gives you all the resources you need to get an 'A' in the class if you really want it. I have friends in Hoeger, Lennox, and the other teacher, and none of them are as clear and informative nor as caring and interesting as her.
Overrated and comes across as pompous at times.
Dr. Johnson is a great professor for chem. Sadly I only have her once for chem 6A. She is very clear and helpful. If you go to lectures, you will probably never need to touch the textbook. I only opened my book like 3 times. The quizzes are easy. But the midterms and final are more challenging. However, if you study, you should be fine.
She's a very good lecturer and offers podcasts, which are helpful because she does go at a quick pace sometimes. One thing I got marked down A LOT on was sig figs, so make sure you know it if you want those extra points. Her TA's hold review sessions helpful for reviewing but don't really prepare you for the super-difficult questions.
I enrolled in Dr Johnsons class at the recomendation of a friend. Shes the most amazing science teacher I've ever had! Answers all my question at office hours and gives me great direction to learn and succeed. Shes really smart but really nice and cares a lot about us students. I totally enjoyed her class and recomend her 100%!
Her exams and quizzes are really hard but they force you to learn a lot! Prepared me more than any other teacher. Was generous because she provides a nice cushion and lets you drop an exam grade. Final was not as hard as midterms but overall, you have to work HARD for her class. But its worth it. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! Sections have quizzes.
Johnson knows how much effort you put into her class; one of the instructors at UCSD you can't miss in your undergrad.
She is a good lecturer but she purposely makes classes unnecessarily harder than usual because she wants to "prepare" you for future chemistry classes. She is very fast paced and makes exams extremely hard. Great lecturer but her class is way too hard.
If you want to learn something and also get a good grade. Don't take her. Unnecessarily hard for an intro class and exams are the most painful thing you'll experience. She says its for the best, but if you're just taking this for a GE this is ridiculous. Too fast paced and not enough clarity.
So basically she makes this class much harder than it needs to be. She teaches basic concepts and provides basic level homework and study tools which is fine. However, when you get to the test I hope you brought extra lube because her whole goal is to try and screw you over as hard as possible. Don't get me wrong a B is EASY, but an A is annoyingaf
Great professor who genuinely cares for her students. She used analogies that made chemistry concepts easier to comprehend. Does her best to offer points and her curve at the end of the quarter is amazing and got me from a B to a B+
She is slightly overrated. In lecture, she is a good professor and explains the concepts of the chapter well. However, her examples are basic and so is the homework given. Then, when she gives her midterms or finals, they are very difficult and require knowledge way beyond the scope of her examples and homework. Curves are generous.
She's really good at explaining but goes really fast. I rather go through her podcasts and take another professor to take the easier tests. Reasonable. Super generous curve. I failed almost every quiz/midterm. Got a little above average for the last quiz and final and ended up passing the class with a C. Sapling will definitely help when studying.
Very good lecturer, remember to understand the basic concepts and STUDY THE HOMEWORK also, use quiz let, you should be fine if you spend about 3 hours a week studying on quiz lethomework.
She is a great professor! She knows her stuff and can definitely teach it to 400 students in a way that they understand. Her lectures are fast pace, so it's hard to catch up if you fall behind by not going to class, reading the book, or watching her podcasts. Her exams are really tough. If you actually try on the homework, you'll be ok.
She is phenomenal, but her exams hit you like a train, but she curves extremely well!
She's very clear and her lectures are very informative and helpful. I actually learned chemistry very well!
The waiting list had like 100 people in the class. I was like #85 or so, but she worked hard to get everybody into the class, so kudos to her for doing that. She podcasts all her lectures. The first midterm was hard, the second was easy, and the final was just the hardest thing ever. I would still recommend her class because you learn a lot.
BEST. TEACHER. EVER. Wish I could've had her all three quarters of chem.... Sadly, no professor measures up after taking her class. Tough but you learn so much. Go to all her office hours; they helped get me an A.
I took Johnson for the whole gen chem series. Her tests are tough, and in order to do well on them you really need to understand the concept behind the material.. I noticed that a lot of her exam questions stem from difficult examples that she does in class, so go back and understand that. Take her if you want to really know the material very well.
Not everything she's cracked out to be. Decent chem lecturer but doesn't do anything that makes the material any more illuminating than any of the other professors here. Decent.
Johnson is an amazing professor! She really made me understand chemistry and it has never seemed simpler. I personally didn't think she was very hard like other reviewers have said. All I did was watch her podcasts and I got 20-35% above average on the midterms and final. Never had to use the textbook. Curved to a B- WI'15. Lots of clicker use.
She is good professor, many people like her. She tends to make analogies to make the class easier to understand, but sometimes she goes too fast to take notes, therefore you have to go back to podcast. She is the hardest 6A professor, but there is a huge curve at the end.
Honestly not all that she's pumped up to be. While a great teacher and effective lecturer, she's not the all-inspiring chemistry sage that everyone here says she is. Test questions stem from the hardest concepts and examples she gives in class, so study those. Also, don't get up from your seat before she's done lecturing. Just trust me.
Her grading scheme is great, especially for freshmen. It allows you to experiment which studying styles work for you.
She's not as great as ppl say. Rather than creating a strong foundation upon which students build, she jumps into details that make the class difficult. If you are pre med and want that solid A, do not take her. By taking her you'll know only how to do hard problems and forget the foundations behind concepts. Sapling is a waste of time too.
When taking Professor Johnson, I found that she is not all that she is cracked up to be. Everyone raves about how amazing of a teach she is; however, no one ever talks about how difficult her class is. I was a straight A student throughout high school and struggled to get a C in this class. REALLY hard prof-if given the chance I'd pick someone else
Best professor I've had so far. Very clear and helpful during lecture and office hours. Her tests are difficult yet EXTREMELY fair. Use lecture examples and practice problems to study for exams. Lots of extra credit from clicker, discussion, extra performance points, and the curve. Through all this, my grade when up 10%, so working hardsuccess.
Definitely earned my A, exams are not bad at all just attend lectures. super nice and funny, take her ! quizzes are freebies, super easy
She presents complex material rapidly and expects full understanding immediately. You'll lose almost full credit on free-response problems for making a small mistake even though you did the process correctly. Many grading errors too. Final had many (10/56) unfair questions that were way beyond the scope of the class and her lectures/book/homework.
No. Just no.
Terrible (but funny) professor with a huge curve. I got an A but I left feeling like I didn't learn a thing.
Free response midterms were the worst. Really tough grader & will deduct points for the small mistakes (sig figs, units, etc.). Her midterm/final really does throw you off guard. She's not a boring lecturer, but she talks & goes by the material so fast, you feel like you don't actually learn anything. Must get iClicker questions right to get credit
she's a good lecturer , her midterms are reasonable, but final is insanely hard :(
Her class is definitely a challenge. I surprisingly loved it though. Do the online homework (don't just do it for the sake of completion, really work out each problem), attend sections (there are quizzes), attend the OH of either the TA or Dr. Johnson, and of course attend class (iclickers needed). She does curve. Got an A- for the whole series!
Johnson is a great lecturer, but don't be fooled by how easy she makes it seem. She goes over hard problems very quickly and spend a long time on examples. Make sure you go back and study the hard questions as they always appear on quizzes and midterms. She's the best UCSD Chem professor and make sure you attend class on time. She gives clickers.
Professor Johnson is a great professor without a doubt. However, the only thing I didn't like very much is she did not explain fundamental concepts very clearly. She teaches you how to do the problems well, but she kinda glides over some fundamental things you should know to understand the material as a whole. She is very helpful and dedicated.
I had never taken chemistry before in high school, and I definitely don't regret taking Johnson for my first experience. You definitely need to work hard for your grade, but it's nothing totally difficult. There was always a ton of chances to get extra help. I found that she went over some key stuff too fast, but it wasn't impossible to get.
Overall the best chem teacher I have had, compared to both High School Chemistry and AP Chemistry teachers. Her midterms are straightforward so long as you read, do the homework diligently and go to lecture. Her final is a bit more challenging and focuses on concepts rather than computations (as her midterms are). However, she prepares you very wel
She was an awesome professor. Her class was a little tough being one of the first college classes I had ever taken but if you go to office hours and just put in the effort it ended up being a great class. I would take her if you can. She will give you a very good understanding of gen chem if you are planning on moving into upper div chem.
Lectures are clear and she covers material well. Quizzes and midterms/finals are very tough though. However, if you really try, she gives opportunities to get a guaranteed pass.
I think the most important thing to keep in mind is to keep pushing through in Johnson's class; grade-wise, things will work out in the end. That being said, her tests require thinking! Dr. Johnson clearly cares about her students and is always motivating them, and I feel prepared for Chem 6B next quarter :-)
Professor is good, not necessarily fantastic, but definitely not a regretful choice. 3 quizzes (which I thought were rather difficult), 2 midterms, and a final. The curve at the end + all the stuff she drops helps a lot. She's a good lecturer, but I did get confused with her teaching style at times
Best teacher I have ever had. EVER.
She was a very concise and competent teacher. Go to class and pay attention, and don't skip lecture at all. Midterms, quizzes, and finals all challenging (with the final being the most difficult). But thorough studying and actually trying with the homework will put yourself in a good position to for a guaranteed pass.
Midterms are tough, but fair. Expect many iclicker questions during lecture.
Dr. Johnson made me love chemistry again; she has a "tough mom" vibe. Her lectures are interesting, clear, and provides many examples. I do agree her exams are challenging; however, it definitely prepares you for CHEM 6B/C. She is not intimidating at all during office hours and ensures all students understands the material.
Her goal is to make chem students as miserable as possible to "prepare us for upcoming classes." quizzes and exams are next to impossible. She only teaches thru showing examples, so if u cant learn like that, good luck. The only reason people do well is because of the insane curve.
Dr Johnson is quite a good lecturer honestly, but her tests, the final in particular, was insanely hard. She said in class that there were merely gonna be 3 questions in a specific chapter and yet there were at least 10. Midterm averages are about 40-50%. If you get her, get ready to work your butt off.
Johnson was a good professor, but her class was traumatizing. Test averages are usually around 50%, but she curves very generously in the end. She drops one midterm or your quiz scores, whatever is lower. Just make sure to do all the homework (do book problems, they help a lot with quizzes) and definitely do the extra credit, and you'll be fine. :)
Dr. Johnson is an amazing professor. Even though her exams are ridiculous, they really test your understanding of the subject. Attend lectures because she has clicker questions and randomly give extra credit questions. Another thing that helped me was attending the other TA discussion section, especially if you know that that TA is very good.
Dr. Johnson is amazing. She genuinely cares about her students and truly takes the time and effort to give students all the resources they need to succeed. This is NOT an easy class by far. I recommend only if you are really good in chem or are a chem major. Do ALL the extra work she gives you as practice is really the only way to be perfect.
Dr. Johnson is someone you should go through 6ABC with. Switching in during the later parts of the class will be considerably harder, because she focuses on building a strong foundation for everything thats to come. She is one of the best chem professors on campus, but to do well, you have to put in a lot of effort. That means extra problems and OH
Professor Johnson is really a nice person who always thinks about students. She gives a lot of extra credit and if you follow her advice it's pretty easy to get an A. Her lecture is really clear and does reflect what's on tests. On her class you always get a second opportunity to get better grade.
Johnson was great for chem6a. Her lectures were good so you don't have to read the textbook to do the homework. Pretty easy A.
Johnson is a tough professor, but she is the best! She prepares you well for the rest of the chem series. You really have to apply yourself and study to do well, but she is very easy to approach for help if you make the effort.
The final is extremely hard. Hard course if you forget high school chemistry. Luckly, TAs will save your life.
She tends to explain things using analogies that don't hold up instead of using logic. At one point she explained a type of problem wrong and violated conservation of energy in a pretty obvious way. (She didn't admit it) TA was w0ke though and explained her mistake. I got the impression that she doesn't have an intuitive understanding of Chem.
Her quizzes (written by TA's; my TA was very rude) and half of the midterm are free response... I failed the midterm (it was very hard), but then the final seemed easy. She curved the exams and gave extra credit.
6A consisted of 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The quizzes are created by the TAs and were fair. Johnson creates the midterms and finals which are unbelievably hard, however she curves generously. She definitely makes sure you pass the class as long as you do all the homework and do alright on the quizzes.
Johnson is like a mom. She truly cares about your grade. She's also a great lectuer. Her lectures are enjoyable. She also makes sure that everything she writes down gets podcasted, which is a great help during test reviews. It's true that her tests are pretty hard, but she prepared me well for CHEM 6b. Take her if you want to learn chemistry well.
Get ready to spend alot of time outside of lab to work on your lab report. It will be a full on formal lab report. Grader not your TA will grade it so it can be very inconsistent in grading. Her midterms is fair and cover a little of everything in lectures and each experiment so be sure to understand it inside out. This is a very time consuming lab
CHEM109 is TOO. MUCH. WORK. You write four formal lab reports, each about 10-15 pages long, for a total of 40-60 pages in ten weeks. Grading can be wildly inconsistent - you'll be docked points on all sorts of details you could not have known. Additionally you have two midterms and an oral presentation. For Biochem majors take CHEM108 instead.
Dr. Johnson is actually my favorite professor at UCSD. I took her for the entire 6 series, and while her class is really hard, it is so worth is. She is an amazing lecturer that is great at explaining everything, while still keeping it fun. She is witty and down to earth and really cares about her students. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN
Johnson cares about her students no doubt, but I feel like much of her lectures are tapered for students who took her for 6a and 6b. I had her for 6a and had a different professor for 6b and I realized how inferior her lecture style is compared to other professors. Don't take her for 6c if you didn't have her for the 6a AND 6b.
Dr. Johnson is sometimes feared within the Chem department, however I believe that she really makes you learn the material in the class, which better prepares you for future course content in 6B and 6C even 40A. Her total of 4 quizzes means that you are always prepared for the midterms even though they are slightly difficult. Overall, amazing prof.
Her lectures are amazing. Although she teaches really well, her tests are hell. Someone might get PTSD from her tests. Unless you are up for the challenge, I don't recommend her. Although one can learn a lot of chemistry from her class, If you didn't have her for 6A and don't know her regiment, do yourself a favor and do not take her.
Johnson has very hard tests, much more difficult than the other chem professors, but she makes up for it with a generous curve. She is a great lecturer and always makes herself available to students. If you put in the work, you will be rewarded in this class
I 100% recommend her for CHEM6A. But beware, if you want to take her for CHEM6B or CHEM6C and never had her before, be prepared to study a lot because she will expect you to know concepts that she has taught in her previous classes. Study hard, go to lecture, go to office hours, go to section, do ALL the homework, and you can pull off and A.
Professor Johnson's class is a challenge, but she gives clear lectures and is super encouraging. If you want to succeed, skim through the book chapter/ lecture slides before coming to lecture and make sure you at least do ALL of the extra book problems and sapling q's before an exam or quiz! (some q's show up word for word on the tests.) Good luck!
I took her for a summer session, so there wasn't a great variety of professors to choose from at registration. She focuses on rote memorization and rapid computation, which sucks to go through, but really ensures that her students know the material. Some of her analogies are hilariously bad, and won't stand up to the test.
I read the textbook, and I still am completely lost during lectures. It might just be that I don't understand chemistry at all or don't have the necessary background, but I am suffering. Hopefully her curves and quiz normalizations will save my grade at the end of the quarter. It's impossible to track your grade because she curves at the end.
I enjoy Johnson's class! Although her quizzes and exams are hard, they can help you really understand chemistry! She does not focus on concepts that much, which is good for me. I will definitely take her 6B in the next quarter! Do all your homework, read the textbook carefully, UNDERSTAND them, and you can get an A!
If you're not looking to take organic chemistry in the future, and just need to fulfill a GE, there are far easier professors. But if you want to be prepared for higher level chem, take Dr. Johnson. You can see that she truly cares for us, but also wants us to work for the grade. A lot of tough love.
Dr. Johnson makes me want to cry but I honestly would take her again if I had the chance. Her tests and quizzes are BRUTAL but she makes you put in the efforts to learn. She offers a lot of extra credit questions in every lecture so that really helped boost my grade.
My quizzes were easy while the midterm and test were tough. If you pay attention and THOROUGHLY understand every topic that she goes over in lecture, you'll succeed. Make sure to pay attention to the clicker points and do the Sapling homework because those are like free point in the end.
Your TA can also give out EC points on quizzes. Johnson has this monotone/low voice that made me fall asleep so easily ngl. Class has generous curve, but it is the compensation for the difficulty. Getting a B is doable, but an A- and up is probably hard, since you gotta actually understand the material very well. This class was hard.
Honestly didn't think her class was that bad. She gives great lectures and offers a bit of extra credit. Definitely worth going to her lectures and even rewatching them on the podcasts. Her tests are not easy but they are aren't hard. It's very doable if you put in the work. Overall, she was a fantastic professor who truly cares about students
Prof. Johnson is truly a diamond in the rough. She could very well be the best professor at UCSD. She is tough on her exams, but ultimately this makes you feel as though the class is meaningful and that you feel as though you learn. She is a phenomenal professor, but an even better human being. She cares and is always happy and upbeat. Take her!
She's a great instructor, but her her lectures don't really facilitate note taking because she goes way too fast. By the time you finish writing down a problem, she's halfway done with the problem.
I took AP Chem and Chem honors, I was pretty good at it in high school. In this class, I annotated the book and did practice problems and still ended up with C. She goes fast in her lectures and provides a lot of examples but not enough explanation to compensate it. The chem hub usually has people so I cant get the one to one help.
The class lectures are not represented in the exams, there is only so much that she gives us to study but she expects each student to rely on a 40-50% average curve to succeed. If your class is really that difficult, some things should really change to help students. Not to have students understand 50% of what youre lecturing Just for an exam...
She was caring like a mom, great lecturer (as she jokes around) but her tests are beyond difficult. I went into the first midterm for 6C understanding the material front and back and came out of the test feeling like crap. It was her last quarter teaching here but good luck to her future students! She is difficult for sure.
As a teacher, she is quite inspirational after you utterly failed one of her tests and she did teach the basics of chemistry well. However, her tests are anything but basic. They are way more difficult than they have to be and my GPA regrets taking her for 3 quarters :( If you want to save your GPA, take another professor.
I took Johnson for the entire series and all I can say is that I am so glad that I did. Her classes were definitely on the hard side, particularly 6C, but it is a level of difficulty that inspired me to work hard for the grade. I got an A- in 6A but i worked harder in B and C and got an A+ in both. Just always remember to keep pushing through!
Difficult series of classes, but Johnson makes the class enjoyable and you will learn a whole lot. I do not usually give out reviews, but she is the best prof I have had at UCSD
Amazing professor!! do the homework, show up to class, study for exams and quizzes and you'll do great!!
I like professor Christina. She is very friendly and kind.
Dr. Johnson is the best science teacher I have ever had. She provides PowerPoints and worksheets to help students understand the material along with giving lectures and practice problems that help you understand the material. If students arent understanding the material shell always take more time to teach us. She truly cares about her students.
Dr. Johnson is an AMAZING CHEM 150 professor. You will have to do a lot of homework, quizzes, lecture-review, and vocab. At the same time, however, she is open to extended deadlines when needed, she offers a lot of extra credit, and she is easily accessible outside of class. Great lecturer, but heavy exam material. Don't forget your SIG FIGS!
