Her tests are tough. I dont know where shes gets these questions but even when you have done the homework they are tricky. It feels like your the first scientist trying to figure out how to solve these problems because you really have to deeply understand what you've learned to solve them.3 lecture tests3x10%,1 qual test 10%,and a final 25%.HW 10%
This class was definitely difficult though I think it had a lot to do with the material (chem isn't easy) The class takes a lot of time and energy. Tests are difficult! You can't just expect to get by by just doing the homework. The grade you get is probably what you deserve.. unless you're a bad test taker because thats the majority of your grade.
She's really nice, but not very good at teaching. Homework, worksheets, and lectures do not accurately reflect what's on the tests. Not helpful in office hours, though she tries. After earning an A in 1A with chem as my major, Dr Abel broke those delusions and now I'm switching majors. Despite the B I got, I don't feel like I learned much.
heart of gold
she does not know how to teach, for nothing, but she tries so I feel bad writing this. Her tests are difficult and the worksheets she gives are not the same as probs on test.Need txt book for Homework. She is nothing like Prof Fier, the most legit prof!
Honestly, the first few weeks you will be frustrated. She doesnt lecture in a crystal clear manner but one thing she does do is give 110% at trying to make it comprehensible. She is not a lazy teacher; she puts up answer keys for homework, study guides etc. She loves kids during office hours and appreciates effort. If you're willing to try take her
She's nice and easy
If you failed her class, you did absolutley nothing. She is such a nice teacher. She is more than fair, she makes herself completely available to help you if you need it. She givers great lecture notes for you to follow, she posts her own homework, and the keys to everything including quizzes. If you can take her for Chem 1a, she has lots of goood
She is a very sweet lady, and a good teacher. She works extremely hard to have good resources out for her students. Easy to take notes in her lectures since she gives handouts and writes everything down. She is a bit unclear at times and sometimes seems in over her head. I think with experience she will become more confident with her teaching.
She's a great teacher, and is really organized. I took the summer class and it was definately a challenge. It's a tough class, and effort MUST be put in. However, with the resources she gives students (worksheets, lecture outlines etc), you will get an A if you put in the effort. Not much extra credit though so again be willing to work!
I have taken her twice, i got a d first time around but I am actually glad she failed me the first time. She is a great teacher always there to help you out(dont be anoying she does not like that), just have to talk to her shell work with you. Put in the effort she notices dont forget units work good on labs. In her class you get what you deserve!
she sucks as a teacher. maybe it was our class but she just reads off her notes as opposed to actually teacher the subject. When you ask a question she can make you feel really dumb for asking. Shes yelled at us a couple times. Try and avoid her at all cost! Tests are HARD! usually 5 all math questions and like 10 MC.
She is very nice. She is not the best as far as managing the class, but she provides you with perfect notes. Just don't e lazy and study the notes. She works really hard for students. You can hardly find a friendly knowledgable teacher in saddleback. And I have to add Dr. Fier approves of her, so this shows how good Dr. Abel is. Good Luck.
Prof. Abel is a genuinely good person and great professor. Her lectures and notes are very organized. The best part is her classes are small so she is very available to her students for any questions or help. She provides study guides for all quizzes and exams which are extremely helpful. Go to class, do the hw, study/practice it, get an A
Prof. Abel is such a nice teacher. She is very understanding and is willing to try and teach you the material if you don't understand. The workload is pretty easy, there is hw every week but its graded on effort, tests are mostly based on lecture notes that she supplies outlines for. Overall good teacher.
I really enjoyed her class, you can choose to partner up for the labs, there is 11 quizzes she drops 1, 3 tests worth 30% and the final. Her test are straight forward and she posts worksheets and study guides to help you. Plus, she will go over the material again if you go to her office hours. Great teacher, i would definitely take her again !
She's honestly amazing. You will learn so much. You will earn your grade but she helps you so much. Gives a study guide for EVERYTHING and her worksheets are SO helpful for understanding the material. Super nice and always willing to helpand is crystal clear in lecture. Tests can be tricky but not if you study the worksheets and notes.
Keep in mind that there's a lab every day and this is time consuming with a heavy schedule. There's a quiz every week, 3 tests, a lab exam, and a final. Don't be discouraged though there literally isn't a better and more dedicated teacher to learn chemistry from. Abel is amazing and if you actually want to learn then TAKE HER CLASS! SHE'S GREAT!:)
Definitely agree with the person below. She's super organized and always there to help you in office hours. great professor overall.
Very organized teacher! Clear notes, lots of study guides for practice. There is 4 test, 10 quizzes and a final, also homework and labs. The test cover everything! Multiple choice, short answers and more, you need to know your stuff!
Although attendance isn't really mandatory you would be stupid too miss too many classes. She is a very good teacher but you must show up to get the gold to do well on tests. Without her lecture the class is pretty impossible. But, if you pay attention you should have no problem getting an A. She's very nit-picky with lab grades. (8/10 etc)
I took chem 1B in a summer .I got an A but I studied so hard for it.She wont answer any question, rarely but very quick.she is not patient at all and not helpfull at all.if you can do self study take her otherwise dont.
loved her!
I absolutely loved Dr. White! She really breaks down chemistry which made it easy to understand the concepts. Her notes are also very clear and she is really organized. Lecture isn't mandatory but honestly, if you go to lecture you hardly need to study outside of class because she explains everything thoroughly.
She'll give you hand outs to fill in which will make it easy to study for the exams, gives you very clear study guides; her notes are very helpful and organized; exams are rather hard but you can get an A! She is extremely nice and does her best to help, but avoid interrupting her in lectures, she'll be pissed! really liked her class, RECOMMENDED!
I was ESL student and I had hard time to understand the material , but she explained every thing and she tryed her best to help me. She is very nice and she care about her student.I highly recommend her :)
Her lecture notes are just a poorly summarized version of the textbook reading with the same examples from the book. She gets pissy if people don't take notes when she lectures but what is the point when the book explains everything in more detail and more clearly than she does? She adds nothing to the class and is unhelpful.
She's a terrible teacher. Has no idea what she's doing, teaches off notes, goes way too fast, and doesn't even put them online. Will make 3 questions from a 50 question test worth over half the test points, and if you have a question, she will make you feel dumb and regret opening your mouth at all.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! I'm telling you, she is a terrible teacher. Well I guess you can't really call her a teacher cause she doesn't teach. HATES students who ask questions and HATES people who don't take notes. She yelled at the class a few times. She is deff. a poor choice. Her tests are excessively hard and unfortunately lectures don't help.
Professor White is a great prof who teaches an organized class. If you go to lecture and copy down what she writes on the board, you have a flawless study guide for every quiz and exam. I really do not understand how people can be complaining about the format/difficulty of this class!
I absolutely love love love this professor! If you read her syllabus she says right off the bat that she will not spend time in her class to go over things that should be obvious to students. However, she enjoys spending time with students one on one in her office hours!! I highly recommend this class with her because she is a great teacher!
Avoid!!!!! At first she seems great but she is a horrible teacher. She gets mad if you don't take notes, she makes you come up with your own lab manual and procedures, she grades hard, she tests on things that were not covered at all which is amazing because she makes you waste over $30 on her book which is poor summary of the real book
Horrible Professor, Lectures are boring and she doesn't like helping students. Her Lab book has almost no directions and is super confusing but you pay twice as much for it compared to others. She assigns lots of homework, and tests are based on the stuff she did not lecture on.
You know those professors that make the class harder than they have to be for no appearant reason, that's her.
If you enjoy having a nice gpa and having studying actually do something for your grade then pick a different teacher. If you don't mind getting a C grade after working your butt off then this class is for you. The only people that got B and A grades were the ones that repeated Chem for a second time with her. Everyone else either failed or got Cs
Dr. White is a really good teacher at heart. She knows her chemistry really well. HOWEVER, her class was one of the most stressful and difficult classes I've ever taken. She assigns a lot of useless homework and her tests are not easy! You really need to work for your grade because the only ones that pass are the ones that take her class twice
Do not recommend taking this class with this teacher.
The only thing I learned from Prof White is how to hate chemistry. I liked her lectures however she loves to give out homework with no regard for the student Her labs and tests are harder than the other teachers and both require tons of extra time to prepare for. After its all turned in expect a low grade because she takes points off for everything
Its not worth taking her for chem. Its clear she knows what she's talking about but she's rude to everyone for asking questions. Be prepared to do twice as much work as the other chem classes because prof white expects everyone that takes her class to be chem majors. I would probably change schools if I were made to take one of her classes again
Tough but great teacher.
Great teacher who is tough but fair and very knowledgeable in her field
She's knowledgeable, but very rude
Do not listen to those who are lying about Dr. White, she is very fair and maintains high standards. If you want to learn, don't expect to be spoon fed.
Dr. White is an amazing professor. She cares about her students and is always available to explain something in office hours. You must attend lecture to get the notes, I never used the book (but you need OWL for the homework). She is a fair and FAST grader (next day). Tests are challenging, provides lots of study guides and practice problems.
I hated every moment of this class
I loved chemistry until I took her class, she really knows how to get people to hate something. She grades super hard and and tests are the same. She makes you completely waste your time with all her extra assignments. I can't wait to get a new teacher so I can learn to love Chem again. Avoid at all costs!!!
These bad reviews are most likely from people who aren't cut out for a STEM major. She is very fair. Gives good partial credit if you make silly errors. What is expected of you is very clear. To get an A you will need to put in roughly 10hours a week. Chemistry is not an easy class but I found her class predictable, which is nice. I recommend her.
Loved Professor White. I didn't have a good teacher or foundation in Chem1A . Try to take both 1A and 1B with her if you can. She has her own style which simplifies things, would have really loved to have learned the basics with her. One of the hardest classes I have ever taken, learned a lot.
Ive never worked so hard just to pass a class. She treats every one like they are stupid. She grades hard and her assignments are harder than the rest other classes. As hard as she grades she barely gives partial credit. its either completely correct or wrong. She is a joke of a teacher. I would never take another one of her classes. No respect
Professor White is condescending in her interactions with students. She seems annoyed when you ask a questions or to be more specific. Lecture is basically her reading the slides. Not very approachable or helpful (when approached). Her exams are extremely difficult. You would be better off taking the class elsewhere.
Good professor who makes you work hard for teh grade but teaches you a lot in the process. I can tell you to do the work and you will be fine.
Excellent but tough teacher
I took her for Chem 1B, Im in OChem right now, and I am so behind. Her class was completely useless. I feel that as much effort as I put forth in this class I would be better off, but she did not prepare us for OChem.
Quite possibly the worst professor at this school. Her lecture was a complete waste of time. I learned nothing from coming to class and listening to her mindlessly talk in circles.
Dr. White is tough, but everyone here is overexaggerating. She's only hard because it is meant to be a difficult class. She's very organized, has templates for notes/lectures and optional homework that helps prepare for tests. I had a crap 1A teacher, but she really brought us up to speed in 1B. Wish i had her for 1A too. She's smart & she knows it
She is a good teacher, but her TEST are nothing like the problems she tells us to practice and the study guide is useless and the problems that are from the study guide are ten times more hard on the test. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS SHE WILL RUIN YOUR COLLEGE LIFE!!! Went to Office Hours and she helped, but none of it is on the test.
I wish I would have read the other comments about her and dropped her class sooner
This class is IMPOSSIBLE!!! The test are SUPER hard and you really need to understand every concept you learn whether it is in lab or in lecture. Do not slack off. I am doing everything I can to pass and I am pretty sure I won't pass. The material to me doesn't seem hard, but the teacher makes it hard. STAY AWAY!!!!! Great teacher, but HARD/TOUGH!!
Great Teacher.
Awesome teacher. Holds high standards but teaches well.
I have no respect for this professor, the grading was impossible. She treats us like little kids and is very disrespectful.
Good news is that she is nicer now than in the past. She is very smart, she created the entire notebook that we use as well as all of the labs. With that said, at times she can acts though you should just know it too. The exams are tough but the labs and quizzes will save you. Homework is once/twice a week through OWL and can take time to complete.
Avoid. If you are not familiar with Chemistry, avoid her. Her test is so hard and there are lots of concept questions. To get an A for tests, you should study more than a week before.
Absolutely worst professor ever. If you want an A, you will not get it. Her exams are impossible and she is horrendous. I have never gotten a B in my academic career and I got one in her class. If you want to ask her a question she sighs and acts annoyed, she has a terrible mood and I dreaded going to her class. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER.
I really enjoyed Prof White's chem 1b class. I'd taken 1a 5 years earlier, so I expected this course to be a challenge, but her lectures are really clear and she's very transparent with regards to what's expected of us. There's quite a lot of homework, but if you take the time to learn and do it properly it's essential to doing well in the course.
Took this class expecting to get a B because of her terrible reviews. I was happy to find that she was actually such an amazing and nice teacher. Her tests are straight forward but you do have to study! I did not go to all the lectures but you may have to in order to keep up. I enjoyed her so much I am taking her 1B. She is NOT easy nor too hard.
She made this class harder than it had to be. I regret taking chemistry with her. She does not care about her students and she could care less about how she treats people.
Professor White has an unfair rating on this website. She is a professor that is clear and concise in both lab and lecture. Before lab she goes over all of the ways you have to calculate things and she will answer questions. She does have tough tests but she has tons of practice problems to work on. GO TO CLASS to pass!
Dr. White is a solid teacher, however her tests are ridiculously hard. When you ask a question, she will respond with attitude. Then she will make you feel bad for not knowing the answer and explain when you should have learned it. I studied very hard in this class and ended up with a grade that didn't reflect how much I learned. don't take her!
I had Professor White for both Chem 1A/B and I truly enjoyed my time with her. She gives you excellent handouts for notes, conducts study sessions, great lectures, difficult but fair tests, etc. I can understand where some of these rating may be coming from, but you can't go through college with the mindset that every class should be easy.
I HIGHLY recommend White for 1A. However, if youre taking her for 1B take a second to think this out. The material in 1B is much easier than 1A and for this reason she makes her tests extremely hard. You can still get Bs on all her tests and get an A in the class which is nice. However, dont expect the class to be as easy as her 1A class. EC givn
I had her for both 1A & 1B. Her class will help you become a better critical thinker and will thank her later. Do the practice problems in the book, her practice questions and pay attention in lecture. Tests involve multiple concepts in each question. Drop lowest quiz, final exam grade replaces lowest exam grade.
Proof. White is a great choice. The class in in itself is not hard, but it covers a lot of ground and you have to be ready to earn your grade. Make flashcards for everything and do ALL the book problems. Also, pay attention and ask questions in lecture. If you plan on missing even two lectures youll be behind. Put in time and youll be rewarded.
She is the worst professor Ive ever had. She treats everyone like crap, grades super harsh, and shes just an overall bad person. I would not take her again if I knew she was this bad. Avoid!
Dr. White is one of my most organized and helpful professors. Chem 1B is a relatively hard course and covers a lot of material. You have to be determined and do whatever she has for you. With the way her class is designed, if you stay on track and do all the work she asks you, which can be a lot, you will be for the hard Chem 1B exams.
Dr. White is an excellent Chemistry professor. There's no getting around the fact that Chemistry requires effort to understand. Despite what others say about her being a hard grader, she's very generous if you show all steps. Chemistry is a language as much as it is a science, learn the language! She is very helpful and quick to respond to email.
I took her as a freshman and fortunately dropped before the 2 week drop/withdraw deadline. I know other reviewers said this, but what made me drop was her 1) attitude when I ask a question 2) calling me out for minor mistakes 3) disinterested demeanor. I love chemistry but I had zero regrets leaving her Chem 1A class. Take Prof. Bear instead.
Prof White is extremely fair and reasonable. You have to be communicate with her ahead of time and she will work with you. The material we studied were Dr. Zoval's lecture videos and online textbook. This class is heavy, but it is well-organized. If you do not understand the material, Prof White will be there for you.
Prof. White is great at teaching chemistry, she does thorough explanations in her lectures and will help if you ask by working through the full problem with you which I appreciate. However, some people are correct about her attitude, I understand it because I have a similar one but I can imagine how it may not be something everyone can withstand.
Extremely difficult. Exams are like an IQ test. So, if you have a genius IQ this is the class for you. I studied for this class as if it was a full-time job. I felt I understood the material going into each exam, but never received better than a B- on any of the exams. More than half the class dropped. Prof is insensitive and easily annoyed.
I had Professor White and she was great. She did a good job answering questions on Zoom and getting back to any questions I sent her over email. I didn't notice any "attitude" problem as other people have mentioned. She always seemed upbeat and willing to answer and explain questions. Definitely would take again.
There is absolutely nothing nice I can say about her. Avoid her or suffer
Dr. White is one of the best and most educated professors I have had at Saddleback. She truly cares about her students and is amazing at teaching the material. She's a very fair grader and gives A LOT of partial credit on tests and quizzes. There's a lot of smaller assignments/labs that help buffer your grade, so it is not just graded on exams.
The class itself is not the most difficult. I went in having passed AP Chem and pretty much did not need to prepare. Even if you had done well in high school chem, you would still be going in with a solid foundation. Dr White is really nice. As long as you show good effort in her class, she'll like you.
Excellent professor of your knowledgeable in chemistry
Dr. White is an amazing professor. She truly cares about her students and their success. The 1A/1B curriculum is challenging, but Dr. White will make sure you understand it and that you have a solid chemistry foundation. Thanks to Dr. White, I had a great foundation for Organic Chemistry. If you want a solid chemistry foundation, take Dr. White!
I will always remember Dr. White as one of my favorite professors. Because of Dr. White, I learned to love Chemistry. Be ready to put in the work, and you will learn so much.
I had White for chem 1A and 1B. She treats you as a mom should, stern and helpful. She will help you with problems if you attend office hours. Lectures can be chunky and cover a lot of material in one sitting. I found that if you work with at least 1 other person in your class you understand a lot better. STUDYING IS A HEAVY MUST OR YOU WILL FAIL.
Dr. White's class is difficult because Chemistry is a diffiult/challenging subject. If you're not serious about wanting to learn Chemistry, or looking for an easy A, then this is not the right class for you. Dr White will make the time to help any student who seeks help. I didn't think I could manage this class, but she taught me to love Chemistry!
Excellent and caring professor. She wants the best for her students and takes the time to make sure the material is understood. Like other reviews mention, Dr. White provided me with a solid Chemistry foundation.
HORRIBLE!!!! She is so rude to her students. I get tough love but her tone is just unnecessary. Do not take her if you want to do well in chem.
I don't understand the positive reviews here she is really the rudest teacher ever. I constantly felt stupid when I went to class because she was just overall super rude her teaching style is not great
She explains things very well, and while she does grade tough, she gives very good and clear feedback. I had her for Chem1A and 1B and she was great. Her tone can come off as rude, but it doesn't bother me too much. Chemistry is a difficult subject, but she honestly makes it a lot more bearable. Prelabs are a lot of typing though.
Lecture, lecture, lecture, lecture examples, lecture examples, lecture examples. Lecture in this specific class is so important and reflective of the exams and quizzes, memorize the lecture material over and over and over again and I mean REALLY engrain the concepts into your brain and I promise you, you will get 100% on every exam, lab, and quiz.
She explains concepts thoroughly but the exams are difficult and need WEEKS of preparation. There are 4 exams + a final which replaces your lowest exam grade. A lab and quiz also get dropped. Grade consists of labs, homework, prelabs, outlines, exams and quizzes. Slack off = fail. Only recommend this prof if you need to take organic chem
I had no choice but to take this professor. Seems nice, sometimes sounds a bit rude. Takes off whole points for missed sig figs, exams are long and tough. Final was almost a book. Labs mandatory, lecture is not but if people miss she gives extra credit. Very tough grader, classes at UC's are easier to some degree. Nice lady overall, but jesuschrist
Dr. White made the class easier, especially since English isn't my first language. I highly recommend her! On the other hand, avoid taking Dr. Beer; her class is awful, and she is unkind to students. Thank you, Dr. White, for being the best professor ever!
Working out isn't fun, but it's good for you. Just like that this teacher makes her course a little more difficult to help better prepare you for higher level chemistry classes. Clear criteria, quick grading, and good lectures. Aside from all this she's really nice, I showed up late so many times because of my sis and she just stopped caring haha.
This is just an overall tough subject, but Dr. White has plenty of extra credit chances, office hours, and a helpful tutor to get you to the finish line. The lectures have a majority of the info needed for exams, but she also provides practice problems/test to help. She grades fairly and does give partial points. Do the work and you will be fine.
Dr. White's class is challenging, but she explains concepts thoroughly. Exams require weeks of prep, so stay on top of the material. Unstuck Study AI was a big help for study prep. Overall, a tough but rewarding course.
Maybe my fault for taking chem my first semester of college also in 2020 and it was a 7-hour zoom, but this professor was kinda mean, like always picked on this one kid Terry and now I'll never forget his name. I didn't find her very helpful or good at explaining things. Lectures were brutal. I was also a first time college student, so...idk.
Dr. White is a wonderful professor who cares that her students do well. Lectures are recorded and posted online, there is clear communication throughout the course, and there is always helpful feedback on assignments. Although the course itself is somewhat difficult, Dr. White offers a structured and helpful approach to teaching this class.
Dr. White is the only professor I know who provides her own personalized workbook for students. There are fill-in lecture notes, lecture practice problems, and diagrams in the workbook. It also includes plenty of practice problems by topic at the end which are extremely valuable when preparing for exams. If you match her effort, you will succeed.
Dr. White is funny, nice and cares abt her students. She provides her students with every resource to help them succeed. Chemistry is not an easy subject but if you put in a lot of effort and time you will succeed with this teacher!! Recorded lectures + posted study guides!! She is tough but amazing!
I had Dr. White for Chem 1A /1B. She is a fantastic teacher. She takes the time to explain concepts thoroughly until we understand. When situations in personal life occurred, she went out of her way to make accommodations so we still had the best chance of succeeding. She grades fast, is very organized, & responds to emails quickly.
I love Prof White! She has her own workbook which makes it so much easier to take notes. She gives a lot of opportunity practice/questions in office hours. She's very accommodating, I've been sick several times this semester and she's offered to move things around for me. Study ahead of time and pay attention and you'll do great!
Avoid at all costs. If you can take literally anyone else, do it. This professor will take off points for every single sigfig you have wrong, so no matter how good your experimental data is getting a 10/10 is next to impossible on lab reports. If you have questions she will say that “you should know this from CHEM1A” patronizing tone when explainin
If you ask her a question, she'll tell you that we reviewed this in class. On exams, she'll mark your answer and someone elses correct and you could have two completly different answers, but she won't actually tell you the right answer and mark it wrong for the smallest mistakes. Tests are nothing like the problems she gives. This isn't teaching.
