Very helpful with math and concepts. Great instructor! Absolutely recommend.
Great teacher, learned the subject well. Grading style is terrible and most of the time unfair. Be prepared to do a lot of work for little gain in this class. Labs are graded beyond strict. This class is not for your GPA.
Dr. Cavalli is a good instructor. Even with days notice of getting this class, she's done quite well. You have to do your work; she grades her classes at college-level. Helpful and recommended!
Dr. Cavalli is a great professor. She explains things well and is always available for extra help. Her class is a lot of work, her tests are very hard, but if you have good study habits and try you will do well in her class. I worked my tail off, but she is a great instructor. 5 week classes were HARD! Kind & fair. Recommended for 16 week courses!
Dr. Cavalli is awesome!! I can't say enough about her. She loves teaching and is always there to answer questions. You have to work for your grade. Face it folks this is college not High School. I have taken both her Astronomy classes and loved every minute of them. You will learn a lot from her.
Dr. Cavalli is a great professor. She is a hard grader, but you get what you earn. Always available to help you. Offers extra credit. STUDY HER STUDY GUIDES FROM HER WEBSITE. very helpful. I'm very excited to have her again next semester.
she makes things harder than they need to be. i only made an A because i went out of my way for outside help. she is nice and trys to be helpful but just turns simple concepts into difficult tasks
I took Solar System Astronomy with this teacher. I liked it so much that I took Stellar Astronomy too. The lectures are great, the class was fun, and if you are interested in the sciences I highly recommend her.
Nice & approachable - explained concepts clearly - extremely hard grader! Very nit-picky about essay questions and lab answers. Requires A LOT of writing on her tests and labs. She is nice, but be prepared to work very hard.
You can tell she is knowledgeable and passionate about astronomy by the way she speaks, always has latest astr news; seems to be able to answer any question about physics; can give everyday examples to illustrate concepts; she posts answers to homework assignments which are perfect way to study for test;reasonable grading policy, has extra cred
She is a hard teacher and is a hard grader. However, I read each chapter, and always did the homework. Her exams are EXTREMELY similar to the homework and to the check point questions in the book. Also, she offers A LOT of extra credit opportunities. I took this class very seriously and made an A+ in the class. Make sure you do all the homework!
She really wants to make sure students understand: always available during office hours, uses lots of demonstration, youtube vids, & interactive projects. Good for STEM majors who need strong physics background. VERY hard grader. Be prepared to do about 6x the amount of writing/explaining you would normally do on a test/quiz to meet her standards.
I enjoyed the way she taught. Physics is not an easy thing to explain and she stepped down to the begginer's level and left no willing person behind. Great professor! I never thought I would receive an A in physics! Does require effort though of course.
Physics is a hard class regardless of the professor. Cavalli is a very good prof because she grades hard. When you have a prof that grades hard, you try harder, when you try harder, you generally do better. It's not a blow off class at all. People that say she's bad are the ones that expect her to give them a good grade, rather than work for it.
Very hard tests. She does a good job keeping the classes interesting and labs fun. No guidance for tests coupled with odd detailed driven questions. Her essay questions are reasonable but the way she grades them are not. She will take away point for not mentioning ideas that are not asked for in the questions at all.
I personally loved this teacher. Other students in the class didnt agree because they didnt like her style, but she has a lot of information to teach so its strickly lecture. She goes very fast but if your interested in the class youll follow along just find. Plus she gives tons of extra credit opportunities
You could become an Astronomist after you finish her class. She is clear and precise on EXACTLY what she expects from her students. SHE IS A TOUGH GRADER because she expects A LOT. VERY HARD CLASS. NOT your AVG CLASS. Gives plenty of ExCred! HARD GRADER. Speak up in class, she likes enthusiast Astronomy students. NOT an EASY B- (VERY NICE TEACHER).
SUPER HARD CLASS!!! I have 5 wks left in this class and I'm STRUGGLING to keep my B(82.7) (I have a 4.0GPA as of now). I read the other reviews and knew she is HARD, but this is beyond HARD. ExtraCred is there but that helps you so little. i go to L.Labs for extra help too. She expects you to learn a lot in each chapter.PLEASE HELP ME GOD.
Prof Cavalli is a great teacher. She isn't easy but if you put the appropriate amount of time into studying you'll do great and learn ALOT. If you are weak in math, I recommend taking trigonometry first. Best of luck!
I honestly don't know why everyone says she is hard. I'll be completely honest I took two of her classes at the same time and had no problems. It seemed like everyone in my Solar class was breezing through it. And in terms of anyone can tell early on that she was enthusiastic about the material. In my opinion she is kind, fair, clear and organized
She gives you all the information through lectures and she expects you to go home and read, and study the material. She expects you to know what the lectures are about. YOu must be prepared in this class to do well. Read the materials before lecture day! Do all the extra credit! I will help you later on. She is a good prof. just a REAL HARD GRADER!
OK this is the real deal, she is a good teacher and goes over the lecture well, but she grades hard, especially for someone that does not like science. She is strictly by the book and her exams are by the book. I received a D, but I think maybe I should have failed. I took her class with 5 other classes, bad move. I still passed.
Prof. Cavalli is wonderful! She is so helpful and thorough. The tests have sheet essay questions where you explain a physics concept briefly. Her hw policy is great! As long as you pass the tests, you don't have hw! I would highly recommend her!
She expects everyone to have had a Physics class somewhere before and gives little time for questions. About half of the class dropped by the end and at least 4 more went into the final expecting to fail. Do not take her class if you've never taken physics or have a hard time with it.
This class was very hard. Dr. Cavalli was very helpful. She provided a lot of ways to improve your grade besides the tests through homework, labs and extra credit. The tests were part multiple choice and part essay. The class period before a test was used for review.
It is conceptual physics. It is hard and a lot of content. Dr. Cavalli's lectures are detailed and as long as you show up and participate you will learn the material. She is helpful if you are struggling and easy to talk to. Show up do your online homework and study the reviews and you will pass. She gives awesome reviews! Extra credit on the test
Dr. Cavalli is awesome. Her grading is on the hard side, however it is an enjoyable class. Put in some work and be cautious in your answers...
A great teacher. She's strict in some ways like cellphones, irregardless it's commonsense and you should know better.
Very fair and helpful. Also very demanding and exacting. Very old style. Not easy at all. But you're guaranteed to learn a lot from her. Highly recommended to anyone interested in astronomy.
Cavalli is a fun teacher, even if you don't like Astronomy. She's very passionate about her work. I loved taking class with her.
Excellent professor --- a little too picky but highly recommended nonetheless!
Very good class, she is in fact a very hard grader.
She has way more labs than other professors, doesn't ever answer questions, and a lot of people did poorly on her tests. All you need to do to pass the test is review the powerpoints. Bam. No book, and lots of extra credit. She uses the online homework, so be ready to buy that too.
Super organized and gives you so many tools for learning. Concepts are explained and then reinforced with interactive learning and labs. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit. Anytime I had questions, she answered them immediately. You better be ready to work though. I got an A, but I busted butt. She made Physics interesting!
Excellent professor who makes you learn something
I don't want to give her a bad review because she's very nice and friendly, but this class is just dreadful. Homework due every week, that's WAY harder than anything we do in-class. She does all the example problems on her own, with no explanation on how she got from one step to the next, so she's not really TEACHING anything.
Dr. Cavalli is super passionate and tends to geek out when she gets on a roll. She does speak very quickly, so be sure to be awake when you attend class! Compassionate, but don't abuse it. There is math but she is happy to walk you through it (been 10 yrs since high school for me).
Dr. Cavalli is a wonderful professor. If you study, you will succeed with her. Highly recommended.
She is very eager to help if you are willing to read and study. She is also very detail conscious. I hope to take her again in the future.
Somewhat fast paced class. You *WILL* learn from her. She assigns a ton of work and expect you to finish it too.
Took this course last spring for science credit, excellent teacher who can convey ideas.
This professor is so sweet. She is very nice and its awesome how much she loves what she teaches. I took her for astronomy which was such an interesting class. She goes fast in her lectures, so its really hard to take notes in class, I took them on my own outside of class. Online homework is not hard, what's hard is knowing when its been assigned.
A real helpful physics professor. She is very nice to students. I recommend her class.
Do not take Prfoessor Cavalli. If you ask a legtiment question she will make fun of you for asking. She tends to pick on certain lab groups with the lab tech. And if you ask her how to word something on the lab questions and she tells how when she grades them she will take off points.
Dr. Cavalli is an excellent professor. She is quite polite and fair. A good grade is within anyone's grasp. I will choose her again next year :)
Amazing astronomy class. i learned so much from the hands-on activities and graphs. This is not somthing you can appreciate without doing and seeing. Do not miss this class if you're into stellar astro.
Loved her! Lectures were very organized and easy to follow. I never opened the book, so it's possible to get an A from just the homework and lectures.
Ditto. Dr. Cavalli is a good teacher. You will learn so much from her!
CHEGG IS THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL GET YOUR HOMEWORK DONE! Its hard to rate her because I did learn A LOT and she does want you to pass. The tests are over the examples she does in class and clicker questions (which I hate and made no sense), and the final is similar to old tests. Allows note card, and gives you 5 questions and you choose 3, old txtboo
Good physics teacher. If you follow her in class and add to that by reading the textbook, you should have no problem with her exams at all.
Took her for Solar System Astronomy. Good teacher, knows her subject well, lectures *very* quickly. Not an easy class. Requires a lot of studying for tests, but many extra credit opportunities. Tough if you're not into math/science. One major presentation. I learned a lot but really had to work for it. Recommended.
Very Enthusiastic. Always excited about astronomy/NASA.
I think she's an OK teacher for the most part, but I found her teaching style fairly ineffective. She teaches about 95% off her power points, goes over very little homework in class, her clicker questions go too fast, and the Mastering Physics program is a nightmare. I've done two semesters of Calculus and Differential EQ, but was lost with her.
Only good thing about her is she offers a lot of extra credit and she is also very nice but can't teach just reads off power points. She is probably the worst teacher I have ever had! Very tough grader, reviews don't relate to the test, way to many labs lots of hw. The lab tech is also extremely rude, and yelled at my group in front of everyone.
Class was well organized and offers an opportunity for all learning types, she's always available during office hours, there is lots of homework and the program for that can be a bit frustrating. Dr. Cavalli offers lots of extra credit, which is helpful in the learning process. Physics is hard in general and she does an awesome job translating it!
Really liked her test format. It's about half multiple choice on concepts, the other half word problems where you actually do math. On the word problems, you're given a choice of problems to do so you can stick to the concepts you know really well. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Wasn't a fan of the online homework, but it is good practice.
There were 4 exams, I started with a 70 and did better with each exam. A on the final. :) Prof. Is very nice&soft spoken but complete silence from all students made it boring. I study the easy powerpoints and reviews a few hours before the Exams. Honestly never opened textbook.I also failed Algebra twice but reading the slides was how I learned
I have taken her class before and it was easy for me to choose her a second time. She gives extra credit opportunities but they require some effort. She is always available to help you when you need it and understanding if you are having conflicts either related or unrelated to school. She knows what she's talking about and wants to see you succeed
This is an outstanding astronomy professor. She is very up to date on her knowledge and other news about space and astrophysics. Furthermore, she encourages curiosity from the students and uses a ton of common sense in her teaching.
she's competent and strict yet patient
She does a great job making sure everyone understands the concepts. Class is very well organized and the work does well to prepare you for the test. She is also willing to meet outside of class for questions and gives thoughtful answers.
My biggest complaint is how soft and monotone her voice is. Make sure to bring coffee or something to keep you awake during class because her voice is perfect for zoning out to. A great teacher for solar system astronomy. If you struggle with math she's available to help you! Would recommend her to a friend. Participation REALLY matters.
She's an amazing person. Tests and quizzes are kind of hard. You really need to read and do the homework and study the labs well. I would definitely take her again.
Very passionate about the subject. Lab portion of the class involves constant group work. Lots of extra credit opportunities if you take initiative and do them. Always willing to explain concepts further and try to help you understand to the best of her ability. Tests definitely require study for an A or a B.
Cavalli is fine I guess, you can tell she cares about astronomy. The only problem is her lectures are absolutely unbearable; her powerpoints are like 70 slides long, packed with way too much info, she is quiet, monotone and quick. I tried very hard to pay attention and every class found myself drifting off because she was just so boring.
As someone who loves astronomy, this class was an absolute bore. She doesn't have helpful reviews and her lectures are long and very dry. She tries to teach way too much information in a small amount of time. The reviews she does give are 100+ questions that no one knows the answers too. I would choose a different professor.
I had Dr. Cavalli for PHYS 1405, PHYS 1407 and Stellar Astronomy and I LOVED her! She offers lots of extra credit opportunities, genuinely cares about her students, allows for class participation with clicker questions (which are SUPER helpful when studying) and is right to the point when it comes to what is expected. I would highly recommend her!
Recommend for non-STEM majors. Way she set up the exams and gave extra credit opportunities are the only ways I, someone who has always struggled with science, was able to get an A. If you actually put effort into it, you should be able to do well. Lectures may be hard to pay attention to but Im forever thankful for the way she set up the course.
Amazing professor, she tells you exactly what to expect on tests. I didn't find much use of the textbook, because her power points are very detailed and easy to understand. I also loved that she put all the notes online so I could print and follow along. She has a true passion for her profession and I've never had a better "science" professor!
Christina is an excellent profesor!! Intelligent woman who that knows what shes teaching. I highly recomend taking her class. I wouldnt say her class is easy but its definitely manageable. Take her class!!
Excellent Physics Professor. Put in the work and get an "A." Gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit. Provides all power point lecture slides. I was so happy I took Prof. Cavalli's concepts physics class to prepare me for Eng. Physics.
Dr. Cavalli is a great professor. She'll go a little fast during lectures sometimes, but she is really flexible with HW due dates and is willing to explain as many times as you need. Her tests are long and challenging, but she'll have a whole period review the class before that REALLY helps. Labs are relatively easy, make sure you get a good group.
Dr. Cavalli is a fantastic Professor. She is very patent and throrough. She is always friendly to students. Amazing knowledge and great attitude.
Wonderful person and a good teacher. She really knows everything. 5/5
Potentially one of the most uncaring professors I've ever experienced. Even though my grades were perfectly fine, she treats the class dismissively and powers through important lecture material while ignoring our struggling classmates' questions.
Not a bad teacher over all. Test reviews really don't help prepare for the tests though. Pretty flexible with homework. Lots of extra credit, but it doesn't mean much in the end. TONS of little youtube videos for every class get very repetitive by the end of the semester. She does care about students but makes some stuff more difficult too.
I've taken Professor Cavalli for both of my science credits and while I did struggle because her tests are long and tough I wouldn't of had it any other way! She is an amazing professor! She is extremely smart and knows what she's talking about! She gives you every chance to pass her class!!! Attendance is mandatory!
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Cavalli's lectures are very organized. I was nervous about taking this class because I'm not great at math but she gives you the option of doing essays or math problems on the tests. Lots of extra credit! I wish her reviews for the tests were a little more helpful but overall a great teacher.
Although this class was very difficult she does everything she can to make sure everyone passes, and helps you with the extra credit she hands out. Overall great teacher!
Horrible!! by the end of the semester there were like 7 people left.. she expected you to know whats going on and just get it. She never explained how she got her answers and its was impossible. You would have had to spend countless hours outside of class cause her lectures were pointless. I ended up having to withdraw.
2nd time taking Astronomy with her and she is really good. Class is mostly lecture but if you have questions or you struggle with the math problems she is willing to help you and explain better. sometimes her lectures are too long but the videos on her powerpoint are really helpful and if you are getting bored with lecture they wake you up
This is a conceptual physics class, meaning less math and more reading. This class is based around the concepts of physics. Dr. Cavalli, I believe is more passionate about astrology (she also teaches this) than actual conceptual physics. She lectures from powerpoint and is very soft spoken. Her tests are HARD and she grades harder.
GREAT professor for physics! Physics is a hard class, but Professor Cavalli demonstrates and goes over the content as many times as needed. Offers lots of extra credit option too! Only problem I can think of if she talks fast and goes over the powerpoints fast, but if you need help, she is more than happy to help. I strongly recommend!
Cons: Drawling/unengaging lectures. Only explains concepts in one way. Unclear grading criteria. Makes grading mistakes which she will not correct. For example, she marked a question as unanswered when the answer was on the next page. I rely more on the book than lectures Pros: Willing to help, tests match HW, PHYS I is simple so you can teach you
Had her during covid and I'm not sure if thats the reason or not but the labs were difficult and there was a lot of work to do. She goes really fast, I had to rewatch lectures because of it. Set of online HW due every week about 20 Q's. Test are multiple choice with 3 free response. Extra credit doesn't due much.. and I did a lot
