Recommend her for humanities! Do the readings and you will do fine!
Great personality, really helps make connections b/w all disciplines. Will answer any question and is interested in opinions of others. Doesn't expect u to be an english major, just to do the reading and try. quizzes are reasonable, grading is reasonable.
This woman is a Godsend! A real asset to her department and the academic community. Very reasonable tests, if u do the reading. Very intelligent, yet down to earth. I'd take her for all my classes if i could. She really holds the humn class together. Take her if u get the chance, u won't regret it!
She is a good person but not a good teacher.
Still a little wet behind the ears, probably has had doc no more than 2yrs. Very knowledgeable, yet hasn't quite found her teaching niche. If u just saw her on campus, u'd think student. Reasonable expectations, tests are of min difficulty. Broad knowledge base, great for humn. Obssessed w/ Beowulf!
she is a very demanding professor. i would not take her again because it seems like she does not read your papers she just begins to mark down things. she tells you to correct one thing on your paper and when you do and turn it in she says it is still wrong
this chick knows her stuff and can brig it down to your level no problem. she is super funny and witty. as long as you read the stories (or atleast get the outlines off of sparknotes.com) you will do fine. i would take her over again.
makes the class fun, more than music or art. she knows what shes talking about and gets along well with the class. kinda tough on the papers if you're not an english person like me, expects you to be some kind of english guru. but overall, i like her, take her if you are good at writing papers.
She was very easy.
This woman deserves the respect and admiration of all she comes in contact with. Very approachable, knowledgeable, & reasonable. If you don't learn something it is your fault. Young enough to connect on our level, yet still maintains a sense of decorum befitting a person of her position. Take her!
She is sooooooooooooooooooooooo hot. I love her knee high boot and strict attitude. Mmmmmmmmmm. Great professor, too.
Breeze! Reading/interp. is of min difficulty. Prof knows her stuff, but isn't affraid to say she doesn't. Quizzes (daily) a joke, papers (3) bigger joke! Exams (2) long, but easy. Prof will answer any questions, always avvailable for conferences. Prof is resourceful, & has broad knowledge! Take her!
What a disfunctional professor! Does she honestly think she is God's gift to English? One would assume she does. It's her way or the highway, no give or take, and she has to be right, so don't even bother. This professor is not worth the effort. Don't take her!
Excellent class, highly recommended. If you do the readings and come to class you won't have any problems.
Imagine a 30 year old who lives with her grandpa, is not married, and reads the same books over and over and over. BORING!!! How did she get so many hot ratings? She is not hot. She will use the entire class to say what it would take a normal person to say in 10 minutes. At the end of the class you just want to hit her for wasting your time.
Very good teacher. Knows a lot of about what she is doing. Very w.itty and fun. to .lea.rn .fro.m.
Dont take this class if your not an Eng major
She will never give you an A on any paper. Lots of B+'s but never an A... I don't think she believes in it.
she sucks don't waste your time
You will improve at writing. The readings are well explained in class. She is willing to work with you outside of class. Still do not expect anything higher than an a B. I would not describe her as hot. She is one of the best options in the English Dept, take her.
She is extremely thorough when it comes to her papers but she is willing to go over the paper before the due date...take advantage of it. She lives up to the hype about ASU english department
Super awesome prof. Take her class if you value your life!
I love this prof. I've had numerous classes w/ her and I'm always thrilled to take another. She's probably the most helpful prof. at asu. door is always open, willing to answer ?'s &, wants to see the students be successful. it sucks I can't take her to grad school w/ me, but she's awesome so take her. You won't regret it. You'll learn a lot too!
I DONT GET WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE "OPEN DOOR POLICY"? SHE ACTED LIKE I WAS "BOTHERING" HER WHEN I SET UP A MEETING TO TALK ABOUT A PAPER!! STAY AWAY AT ALL COST!!!
She requires a lot of reading, but she talks about the readings so much during class you really don't have to read at all, just take notes. She is very understanding and helpful; if you have to miss class, just send her an email and she'll excuse it. She's a little rough grading papers so be SURE you know how to write a proper essay.
class can be pretty boring. Make sure and do the reading for her quiz. they count 25% of your grade and they are easy. she is a fair grader and tones of help if you go to her office and have her review your papers. English is one of my worst subjects and I got a B
I'll give her one thing: she's really passionate about Medieval Lit. I found a lot of the material in lectures to be "just so you know" stuff, though. She grades fairly and is very strict about MLA format on papers.
does not make any sort of contact during lectures. extremely hard grader. but, does allow for one to come for extra help during her office hours.
Nice lady.easy at first but towards the end of semester gets a bit tougher. WARNING: She does not make any kinda eye contact whatsoever unless youre directing a question towards her, which i find sorta hillarious, its like she makes an impressive amount of effort to avoid eyes so she looks at what seems to be the feet of the front row students. LOL
I really enjoyed this class. English has never been my best subject, but I still earned a B. Any English 1102 class at ASU will be difficult for most. But it is a huge help to have a professor like Dr. Heckman there to guide you.
Strict essay grader (quizzes are easy though). Not a very hard professor, but not very easy either. Virtually impossible to get an A but a B is very easy to get (pretty much everyone gets a B). If I could take her again, I would... because truth be told, none of the 1102 teachers at ASU are easy.
Oh by the way, don't EVER expect her to finish class 10 minutes early---she drags everything out 'til the very last minute and ends up repeating herself just so class can finish right on time. BUT she is a very nice lady and unless you're a retard, you'll get a B.
FIND ANOTHER TEACHER. at first she is very easy, after midterm her grading standards are strict...i had a high B in the class all semester until her last few papers were graded so rediculous that i am struggling not to fail. find another teacher!
i loved dr.h!!! she was wonderful. she will talk up to the last second of class, so do not expect to leave early. she has a good since of humor and a lot of personality. i would take her again!!!
Don't expect any help from this lady. And the arrogance level is pretty high.
She's hot, but doesn't make eye contact and can't stay still. She starts class with a quiz before she calls attendance and likes to start class up to 5 minutes before time to do so, so be early! If you're "late" then you don't get to take the quiz. She made us write several in class essays over poems that were 7 lines or less, which is difficult.
she was GREAT . took her for the summer and was real satisfied. She returns things quickly meaning she puts in a lot of effort, and u should be willing to do the same. u have to keep up with the notes and make time for effort for essays. They are really not bad and so is the LRP. she is always willing to help and is very patient! Highly recommend!
GREAT! Awesome professor. She is so smart and very helpful! U have to be willing to stay attentive, keep up with the notes and readings, just like u would with any other class. and u would do very well on the quizzes, essays, and even the LRP ^_^ Take her!
Her intellect is terrifying. Lectures purely from memory and does so without faltering. However, you will leave her class with a lot more knowledge than you entered. More than willing to help students when they ask for it appropriately (and not right before a paper is due).
Very helpful professor. She doesn't look at you, but her intelligence on the literature is impressive. I couldn't stand poetry before this class, but Dr. Heckman makes it easy to understand and like. Quizzes are easy and we were able to take essays home to finish them. Very helpful on the research paper, had 2 meetings to make sure you'll pass.
Very approachable and helpful professor. Grades somewhat tough, but not unreasonably so. She also likes Office Space and The Simpsons, so she gets a lot of cool points for that.
She is a very helpful, talented, articulate english professor and I recommend her over any other English professor.
Her standards are high, and she works hard to convey the material. Don't take if you're lazy. Take if you want to learn and you're willing to work for your grade. Structured class expectations and layout.
She is an incredibly knowledgeable teacher that does an excellent job in what she does. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. She kept it interesting by adding in a mandatory play and a movie. It was difficult at times, but if you do the work, you will do fine.
This was for her Angl-Sax Lit - Great class -Heckman is hysterical. Very helpful prof if you need help - BUT her essays are nothing to take lightly - she grades very hard. Quizzes are what kept me alive. Reading is a must.
Dr. Heckman's class was extrememly helpful to me. I never had an interest in poetry and reading but now I feel very confident in it. She is the chair of the department and really knows what she's talking about. Do the homework because they will really help when it comes to the quizzes. Put a lot of effort into the Research Paper and you'll do fine.
Critical of all of your work but in a helpful way. She does not look at you during lectures, rather at your feet or your books. extremely approachable for questions. recommended.
I like professors that care about their subject but she was a little too much.
Heckman is a genius! This class is HARD. You MUST read everything and take notes. She takes up and grades notes so this is a time consuming class. She is kind and understanding but she is a stickler for attendance and won't tolerate tardiness. PAPERS ARE NO JOKE. Perfection in MLA Style is a must! Good luck!
She is amazing. She attends the art and music portions of the class, too, so she can bring it all together for you. You have to read and do notes but it makes you learn it. Her reviews make the essays easy. She is brilliant! Very knowledgeable in all the areas of humanities and able to put it on the student's level and make it fun. Loved it!
Highly Recommended. Great Professor. Has a sense of humor. Study guides for test/exams. Available for meetings & helpful. Attend class, bring books, read materials, participate in class, do h/w discussion ?'s. 2 major papers. Allows extensions. I got a B only b/c I waited at the last min. to do library research paper. Easy A. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Dr. Heckman is an amazing lit teacher. You do have to read the assignments and do the work, but she's always available if you need help, especially with papers. She makes sure that she sets up personal meeting times to help you with your research paper. Her class was discussion based and very enjoyable
Good teacher.
Although, she is a good teacher in some ways, such as explaining what the story or poem was about, she is horrible when it comes to grading essays. I have never encountered a teacher who picks points off your essay because word choice. I have never made anything lower than a B on an essay until this class. I was disappointed.I'm not take her again.
Dr. Heckman is very intelligent and knows what she is talking about. Reading is a must. She is the head of the English department, therefore she grades like the head of a department would. If you do the work you will get a good grade. Not a class to just "get by" on.
She is the BEST! I highly admire her. She's extremely intelligent and helped me recognize my own intelligence throughout her class. To make a good grade, you must put in effort but she is ALWAYS willing to help out. I never understood or liked poetry or short stories, but taking her class changed that! She's just a really great professor!
She is ok! Rambles on A LOT about this and that, makes it extremely hard to stay focused. Grades very hard on papers, I would say take her only if you want a challenge and you like long lectures!
She gives study guides for test & exams. Very Helpful. You must attend class and bring your books. Make sure to read, participate and do homework. You only have 2 major essays. Organized syllabus, she has a great sense of humor too. Watch your grammar and structure on essays. Funny, great class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Not interested in subject matter.
Warning: This class will crush your brain. Don't fret! Dr. Heckman is very patient and encouraging. If you go in understanding that you are going into one of the most difficult classes at GRU and work hard, you will survive. She is incredible!
This class requires way too much work for a (now) 3 credit hour class. Assigns A LOT of homework. The material itself is not that hard and the quizzes are taken online, however the homework assigned is long and tedious. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. There's also a group project due at the end of the semester that is a 8 min. documentary.
Both of her essays are focused on linguistics, and she forces you to mostly work with definitions rather than literary content. For homework every night she requires notes that answer vague questions that don't "fit" with everything she uses the note template for. Her lectures are sometimes over-emphasized towards language andor history.
I took her over the summer. Had to be there everyday and did homework(to turn in) every night. Plus a paper every weekend due on monday. It was a lot of work but from doing all the work I aced all of my major tests because I knew the material so well. A lot of reading but I love literature I so enjoyed her! Very knowledgeable! Prepares you well.
Dr. Heckman assigned charts that were due at the beginning of every class, this became a nuisance two weeks into the class. The material is covered quickly along with long lectures. If you enjoy Humanities I recommend her.
Dr. Heckman is a wonderful professor. You can tell she really loves what she teaches. She's very approachable and often quite funny. She gives a lot of homework, which I found annoying, but they're pretty easy so they can help your grade a bit.
She's a great professor. If you have a chance to take her class take it. Her class is very easy, but expect to do a lot of homework and reading.
I took Dr. Heckman jointly with another professor for a Breaking Boundaries course required by the Honors Program. She taught the humanities portion of the class. I would say that she is somewhat of a tough grader, and she can be long-winded during lectures, but overall she knows her material very well, is decent at teaching it, and is hilarious!
So much hw, but so much extra credit. Every day in class there are reading notes with about 3 questions about the reading in which you have to quote/ explain at least 4 answers to the questions. A lot of extra credit though! Just mainly events you have to show up at and take a selfie for proof. Also final proj is a ppt, not a paper so that's nice!
I loved Dr. Heckman's class. She is clear on what she expects. There is homework due every class, however it will make you a better writer. She gives constant extra credit opportunities and is quick to grade and return assignments.
Dr. Heckman was amazing! I am not good at english or writing papers, but as long as you try and go to her office hours you will succeed in her class.
Reading notes due every class day. Four sections of four quotes with explanations and citations most of the time. Really took away from time from major-related classes. Group project at the end of the year. I was stuck doing the entire thing solo dolo. Take HUMN with someone else unless you're an arts major or just really love arts and busy work.
Dr. Heckman is a great professor. She is very clear about what she expects out of you. She does give reading notes that are due every week, they are a pain to do and they take time, but they really do help you become a better writer. If you show her that you care about your grade she will work with you on anything. Also Very helpful in office hours
There are reading notes due every class period that usually don't have to do with what is going on in class (aka it's busy work). She doesn't respond to emails. Her lectures don't make sense and don't help with the quizzes she gives. If you are looking for an easy A do NOT take Heckman.
Dr. Heckman is a really nice person but she talks a lot and never fails to show up for class. You have four papers and a lot of reading notes and lessons in another book for homework. Sometimes her class can be really really boring.
Do not take her! She assigns hours of busy home work due every class and doesnt take the time to go over correct answers. Grades papers very hard. There is a large group project at the end that requires a lot of out of class time and you do not get to pick your partners. Her lectures are boring and it is very unclear what she wants you to know
Dr. Heckman is a very funny person and easy to listen to in lecture! She is a tough grader on essays, and gives reading note assignments for every class. These aren't too hard but they take up a lot of time.
Honestly don't take her. She gives a lot of busy work due every class period that is useless in the class. She's unclear about what she wants and hard to follow in lecture. She gives a huge paper that is due at the end but also has a final that requires an essay as well after you've already written 5 which she grades harshly.
In the beginning, she assigned SEVEN reading material on top of reading notes. Reading notes were easy, but then the essays were difficult. I do have to say that the essays were the main point of the Research Paper in the end, so it helped a lot. But... she graded hard on the essays.
DO NOT TAKE. She gives you numerous "reading notes" that are due before every class session. The reading notes also take up LOTS of time. They are somewhat easy but not really. You can tell her political ideas and her feminist ideas in the way she grades her papers. DO NOT TAKE unless you want a very hard earned B-
If you ever get a chance take her class! She is an amazing individual and really cares about her work. She is understanding and is willing to work for you if you work hard for her.
Heckman is a great professor don't get me wrong, but her work is HARD. She requires so much out of you only for a 3 credit hour class. It becomes very time consuming and hard to keep up with other classes when she requires reading notes for every class and very lengthy papers.
She makes the course enjoyable. Tons of papers to write, but she allows you to revise and gives you points back. The papers that you write also go towards your library research paper. Only 2 tests which require minimal studying. Also very funny!!! Skip class if you want
Dr. Heckman is clearly a master of her subject area, but tends to eat up lecture time with unnecessary details about what is being discussed. She also gave no breaks for assigned reading, leading to students struggling to keep up with 20-30 page readings expected every class. Yes, every class--and written homework to turn in. Very challenging class
Dr. Heckman is a very good professor. There is a lot of HW in terms of reading notes, but they help you prepare for the midterm and final. Class discussions are stimulating and build upon reading notes. There are a good amount of papers, but she will help you if you don't know what to write. Overall a very solid professor.
Be prepared for A LOT of hw. There are a couple of essays you do throughout the semester that need to be put into a 12-ish page research paper at the end, plus a final exam. I thought it was a bit much for a 3 credit hour core class, but Dr. Heckman is a good prof. She's a tough grader but you'll become a better writer for it. Do the extra credit.
Professor Heckman is super sweet and ready to discuss anything but she requires lengthy reading notes turned in every class session. These reading notes are helpful for some of the papers youll do and the final exam but they are a little excessive and easy to fall behind on. Otherwise her course is pretty interesting and eye opening!
I've always been told by teachers and professors that my writing was good, but I struggled in this course. However, Dr. Heckman's tough grading will make you a better writer, her feedback is clear, and her criticisms are legitimate. I had to work hard but I was ultimately prouder of the work I submitted for her class than any other.
By the time you get your grade for the first paper, you have already written and turned in 2 or 3 more papers. If you made a fundamental formatting mistake in paper one and repeated that formatting mistake through the rest of the papers, too bad. She doesn't teach you how to format. She talks about random stuff and just expects you to look it up.
(Medieval) There is homework due every class that includes 12 quotes from whatever reading she assigns. These readings are really lengthy. Lectures are: repeats of last class, something unrelated, way too in depth. She speaks in old English sometimes. Very focused on meaning of anglo-saxon right now. I do homework in her class instead of listening.
Dr. Heckman is a great professor. Kind, obviously knowledgable, and skilled at what she does. She's into medieval literature and speaks in old English sometimes. The Human Experience class requires a lot of reading. Pay attention to, and actually do the assignments, and the tests will be easy. Steer clear if you're not a fan of group projects.
She is super nice as a person but her class is not the greatest. Reading notes are due every class and they require 3 quotes per section. Also there is a group project in which she picks your groups and barely get class time. Her lectures lead off topic. Required to buy a book on amazon and possibly an anime. no time for major.
Dr. Heckman really knows her stuff and is really great at spreading her passion for the material onto her students. The readings for this class were absolutely amazing and I loved every assigned reading. That being said, she does give out a lot of homework and I spend a disproportionate amount of time devoted to this class compared to others.
I took Dr. Heckman's class in Spring 2021. She is considerate, knowledgeable, and skilled at what she does. In-person and online lectures were interesting. The class instructs a lot of reading. Pay attention to, and do the reading assignments, and the tests will be easy. If you are not a fan of group projects, consider avoiding the class.
do not take if looking for an easy elective, a lot of work for an elective course. easy quizzes directly based on lectures. nice professor. attendance mandatory.
Amazing person and very caring. The class was a breeze just lots of reading. Quizzes are so easy and she just uses old questions for midterm and final.
This is not an easy elective, so if this class isn't required for your major I suggest not taking. You'll be put in a group with random people you may or may not like for the entire semester to do projects. Tons of reading, oh my god so much READING. The assignments aren't hard, just take a LOT of time to do and complete. Lots of citations required
I had her for human experience. This class was about analyzing film, which was not what I expected. We watch movies and discuss homework in class. There is one big group project and several homework's that are time consuming. Overall, the class is easy, and the professor is a good communicator and understanding. Always willing to accommodate.
Nothing against the professor, just the class. It's basically just a class to analyze film and go insane in a group podcast project where you get stuck doing all the work. Lots of reading notes with occasionally long readings. Unless you feel like doing a podcast that takes up all your time, do NOT take this class.
