Her class is boring. Her exams are ok. If you read the book you should have no problems.
Tests are pretty easy-that is if you ever wake up from the coma she will put you into from her boring classes. Boring is not the word, but she gives no homework assignments and no papers.
Boring Boring Boring!!!! BUTTTTTTTTT... 3 EASY exams that you can definitly pass and one bull sh** paper. I recommend her but you'll have to bear with her boring lectures
Must take her class!!! Its the easiest 3 credits you'll ever earn. If you can stay awake and write down what she says and also read the book, you will pass this class. Three easy tests & Seven page term paper on topic you choose.
Tok gov 101 on Saturdays...The test are easy only if you bust your hole studying for them, which I had to do b/c I could stay awake in class to listen. But if you are looking for a class with no midterm/final go for it. Just the 7 page paper at the end.Overall she was ok and she used words like "
I had a really great experience with Prof. K. She was a little longwinded, but I felt that she had excellent lecturing skills. Her lectures gave me a total understanding of the subject, and her tests were usually straight from the text. Her grading of the 8 page paper was pretty fair as well
i dont know when anyone ever got tests her class was all papers. i did not understand the topic of each paper because the question changed by the minute. i have to retake the course after failing it
This is an easy class. She gives only multiple choice tests and if you read the text you will pass. There is only one term paper. But everything else is a breeze. She appears to be a little stuck-up but once you get to know her she's okay. Her lectures are really good you could learn a lot by just listening to her. I got an A-.
very boring class, had to do 5 papers in her class. very upset with my grade. Bring a pillow to her class.
I think I deserved an A, but I got a B-. I wonder if my grade had anything to do with me being a minority?!!!!
No good!
VERY loud voice!!! Very hard tests!!! A lot of material to study, need to learn about 50-100 terms for her tests!!! STAY AWAY
She's extremely knowledgeable. If you listen to lectures and study, you will do well.I will look for her name when registering for future classes. Some people want things with out working for them.
professor was too hard. not recommended!!!
did not enjoy the class

A very hard class
She is an easy professor if you listen in class and read the material. Exams are really tough. You can do extremely well on them if you read the required text and take good notes.
Every 2 chapters there is a test. Some multiple choice and one essay. If you study all vocab and read thoroughly tests are very easy I never got anything lower than an 88 in that class. Also she drops one low test grade. And I am not a fan of gov but she did a great job teaching it. Also when is learning gov ever easy?
Had her on Saturdays. She had a test every couple chapters. Her tests are M/C and essay. M/C you have to read the chapters. Most of the questions are on terms and important people/cases. Essays are easy because if you listen to her lectures she explains fully until you understand. You basically rewrite what she said on paper and get a easy A.
I thought that her tests were fair and she was helpful. I am a minority and I got an A.Her ideas are liberal, but she allows everyone to talk and say what's on their mind. Overrall I thinks she is a great professor and you will learn about Government.
This professor is AWESOME! She presents the material clearly and if you do not understand she will go over it with you until you do. She gives everyone a chance to talk and is open to different opinions. There were four exams. Listen to her lectures and read the textbook.
I really liked this professor and her class. Took it last semester. It was mandatory for me, but she makes the topics interesting and wants to hear my opinions. she has a sense of humor too, which is always good. Tests can be hard, so be sure to study.
Took her Intro to Gov final yesterday. As far as I think she was really great I enjoyed the class. I agree with the other reviewer, she is funny we laughed a lot. She can be tough but I think always fair. I learned a lot and had a good time doing it.
i REALLY loved this professor!while the class may be a throwback to high school history, she made the classes fun and interesting. she was very good about laying out the ground work, and her teaching style clicked with me. awesome professor, wish she had more classes at JJ
This professor is AMAZING! Seems a bit uptight in the beginning but this may be just to weed out bad students from the beginning but after that you're good. Professor is clear and presents material efficiently. You WILL HAVE TO DO THE WORK! But tests are not hard if you study and she is amazingly fair. I loveddd this class!
A+. Other times fit better but I took her class anyway because my friend told me she was great. Glad I did. She makes it interesting &fun, especially current events. She explains things well and is interested in your opinions of the issues. I haven't taken her final yet but so far 3 tests. If you study you'll do fine. But you do need to study.
Like the other reviewer I took her class because a friend said she was worth it even though her sections are not as convenient for my schedule. Glad I did. She has standards but she's fair and you get the grade you work for. We had a good time with some laughs.
THE BEST Political Science Professor!!!! She's very passionate about teaching and her class is very interesting. Take notes and read the chapters, u'll do Great! I dropped 3 POL classes bc the prof. were boring, this one was a winner. :) ... I would take another class with her!! A+
YES. Don't bother researching any of the other 101 professors and take her class. Study and you will do well but almost more important is that you will have great conversations about politics and an actual good time in class. I learned so much more because those things were happening while learning.
She is a great professor and I REALLY enjoyed every second of her class. If you do the work and read the chapters and do the work you'll do well. I highly recommend her
I liked her alot. Cool.
SHE IS WONDERFRUL, KNOWS WHAT SHE TALKING ABOUT, OVER ALL A VERY GREAT PROF...
GREAT PROFESSOR! She is clear, takes time to explain things and most of all knows what she is talking about. Absolutely loved her!
One of the best professors I have had. Interesting lectures and class discussions, great personality with the class.
Read the chapters assigned in the textbook, takes notes and just be present. Thats all it takes. Her lectures got more interesting each day, she took the time to make students feel welcomed. Totally captured my attention, she was funny and intelligent. loved it.
One of the best professors, IMO. She knows what she teaches and I like her teaching style. You have to do papers but she helps you along the way.
She is a great professor and is very clear about she wants. She Lets class out a bit early and is very enthusiastic and fun while teaching. Shes the best Pol 101 professors in John Jay. Must study that midterm or final
Rude, unhelpful & has a nasty attitude. Method of teaching is awful. I learned nothing abt public policy b/c she teaches her opinion & not the actual topics. Take this class with a more professional & useful professor. RUN away from this one. Loved the subject area but HATED her class! Teaches nothing but gives a ton of work before midterm & final.
shes a smart prof. tests are from txt books, 1 midterm 1 final, and 4/5 small papers 1 long paper, tough grader, she explains what she wants, learned a lot
Professor Katsanos is one of the best professors, I'd say. She has a way of explaining the issues very clearly and is detail oriented, Even after the class if you have difficulties understanding some parts in text books or material itself, you can always set up a meeting with her at the office to get extra help. She's really good, highly recommend!
Prof Katsanos is a great teacher. I appreciate the way she uses simplified explanations to convey themes and concepts. She has a humorous side to her, which keeps the class entertaining. The class is mostly discussion based with some note taking. It is important to take good notes and read the textbooks to do well on her essays and exams.
She knows what she is talking about, gives many examples to a topic so she can be undertood well for the notes. Take good notes for her midterm and final b/c she gives review sheets for each. One 10 page paper but tells you exactly what she wants in the paper. Has a funny side but tends to cover it up. Overall Amazing Professor!!
At first I told myself "yeah I'm dropping this class", it seemed hard. It got easier the more people spoke up, it wasn't boring at all and the prof is helpful and clear cut. There's a midterm, a 10 page paper and the final all worth 100 points. Very simple but the tests can be hard. Take it if you need the class, it's worth it.
She may be a jokster, but this characteristic will not make the class easy. Makes you study hard for exams and at the end the exams had nothing to do with what you studied. She takes a long time to hand back exams and she once said that if she didn't have time to grade the exams, we would have to retake it. Stay away from her.
She is a great Professor! Easy going! Two test and they are easy, just know your material. She's very funny.
Stay away from her. She may like to crack up jokes in class but, she is not good at teaching. Gives you a lot of review sheets for the midterm and final and at the end, they have nothing to do with the questions on the exam. Take it with a better professor. Waste of my time.
I really like her, but I see why others don't. Very funny and easy to approach. Good class, but TOO MUCH for 101. Two 5 page papers, 2 long HW's (get no credit for doing it, but get points taken away if you don't), Mid-term, Final. Mid term 15 q's and 2 essays in an hour! Pretty difficult. I won't take her again, but I don't regret taking her.
She's a good funny professor but, her teaching style is not that good. Her lectures are long and boring. Her tests are hard and here review sheets aren't that helpful. She even told us to remember over 100 vocabulary words for a test and at the end, only 2 appeared on the exam. Stay away from her, unless you like being stressed.
Unless you're good at writing essays don't take this class. The midterm and final are heavily graded on them. She says you just have to be able to write the essays with a nice bit of detail but trust me you pretty much need to write EVERYTHING regarding the question. The class average for the midterm was around a 70, and the final is 3 essays ...
Be ready to teach yourself because her way of teaching is no good. Assigns 2 long essays, homework assignments (get no credit for it but if you don't, she deducts points off your grade), and 2 exams. She gives review sheets but their useless because in the end , they have no connection to the exams. Don't recommend her.
You will need the textbook to teach yourself because, her way of teaching isn't very effective. Tests are hard and expects you to know an excessive amount of information for the exams and in the end, they have no connection to the exam questions. I don't recommend her at all.
She's ok and easy to approach but, for a 101 class she was to hard. Makes you read long chapters from textbook. Gave a bunch of review sheets for exams but, they're useless and made us remember over 100 terms for exam. 2 essays are kind of challenging, since she only provided and essay question without a proper format. Don't really recommend.
Way too much for 101. Very hard midterm and final, and essays are challenging too. Definitely wouldn't take her again. Gives a bunch of useless review sheets and told us to remember over 100 vocab. words for exams. Way too hard. Don't take her class at all. Especially not at night when you'd prefer to rather sleep. This class was a WASTE of my time
STAY AWAY FROM HEE!!! Her class was long, boring and hard. Gives a bunch of review sheets for midterm and final and made you memorize a over 100 terms. Essays hard. Take this class with the best professor by the name William Edelstein. He helped me overcome the fear of POL 101 after taking this class with her. Stay away she's no good.
Lectures were long and boring. She rambles on and on about nonsense. Three 5 page papers a midterm and a final. The papers are easy but she only give out about 2 As per class. Doesn't give feedback on the papers either. Class is easy to pass but extremely hard to get an A in. Take someone else.
Her class was my worst experience at JJAY. 2 essays, midterm, final, and homework (no credit and if you don't do them, you get points deducted from your grade). The exams were difficult and her review sheets were useless. Stay away from her. Save yourself some time.
I wish that despite having read her reviews beforehand, I didn't still take her. There are difficult classes, and then there are difficult professors. She's one of them. The material isn't half as hard as she makes it. When she does manage to teach you something other than how to read a textbook to pass her tests, well, it's about Hollywood or TV.

Let these reviews hold weight; they could end up preventing one of the biggest mistakes of your college career. DO NOT TAKE HER. Her quizzes are ambiguous and there are NO grading rubrics for essays on midterm, final, and papers (so she will grade you as she likes and you have no basis for rebuttal). She boasts of having taught for long yet can't.
She taught me something invaluable: BELIEVE REVIEWS. I decided to take her in Spring 2017 despite reading bad reviews from her former students. HUGE MISTAKE. She rambles on and on about current events/topics, which is great, BUT NOT WHEN YOU'RE NOT TESTED ON THAT BUT INSTEAD ON DETAILS FROM TEXTBOOK AND LONG ESSAYS. Avoid her! SAVE TIME & your GPA.
No clear grading criteria. Absurdly value, ambiguous tests, moody grading on papers, dismissive and disrespectful language, tone, and expressions when asking for help, factually off lectures (not to mention they're boring as hell) and absolutely no spark in class. Poor quality instructor and even worse attitude.
LOLOLOL the review below is funny but yes delayed grades is a major issue with this professor. She's not old or bad with tech but throughout the semester she's always last to return grades and even at the end of it she hasnt posted final exam or final grade at all anywhere very inefficient
Awesome Professor!
Awesome Professor!
She gives 5 quizzes (lowest grade dropped) a mid term, one paper and a final... more than enough chances for a decent grade. If you know your math, you would realize that this is better than a 50/50 chance with just a mid term and final. Read the textbook and follow syllabus, you wont fail. She is approachable and VERY understanding.
Horrible experience. She puts too much weight on papers (as assignments and in both midterm and finals). Grades unfairly. Sometimes even quizzes are essays or require 3-4 sentence answers which she grades subjectively (meaning room for taking points off). Nasty and dismissive attitude if you express concerns. Very unclear teaching and grading.
Avoid her if you can! This school has better professors who can teach this course more effectively. Her teaching style is awful, and she has a bad attitude -- especially when you ask her a question about the assignment. I learned absolutely nothing in her class, but I received an A-. Do your research and take another professor!
One of the reviews below seems so ingenuine that I cannot believe a student wrote it. I'm a straight-A student and this instructor made my learning process a miserable experience. She's so inefficient and inaccurate in her lessons (and her nasty attitude does nothing to help her poor quality teaching). I still got an A, though. Just trying to help.
I took her class a little over two years ago and I still remember the trauma that developed in me after withdrawing from her course. Her class is boring and her tests are ridiculously made. Her essays are also complicated because she only gives an essay question without providing a proper outline. PLEASE don't take her!! Save your time and GPA!!!!!
For some reason when courses for following semesters open I always see how many students are enrolled in her classes and I have to say I really sympathize with them. Horrible professor. If you are enrolled in her class, PLEASE drop it now or you will regret it. I know I do. Her lectures are so boring and exams are very tough. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS
A midterm, a final, 2 essays and homework for which you get no credit but if you don't do them you get points take off your final grade. So ridiculous. Essays are hard since no outline is provided. Try your best to AVOID this professor because if you end up having her, you will regret it completely. I know I do. Don't put your GPA at risk!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure what's going on with all the bad reviews, this professor is an EASY grader. This is college, read your assigned textbook and shut up. Participate in class because what is said in class is on the exams. Drops the lowest quiz. Sure she has some random questions sometimes- make up a random and logical answer yourself for the credit. Take her!
Very funny professor. Her exams are mainly essay which is fantastic- it gives room for free expression other than a multiple choice exam to just memorize. You will UNDERSTAND her. I recommend her to all. She just needs to give more time though on exams or to just take a few questions out. She realized this and fixed and curved all the exams! Wow!
Amazing. I had her for POL 101 and it was such a breeze!
POL101 class was equivalent to a high school christopher colombus class. SO EASY.
Funny professor. Explains things perfectly. Speaks loud and clear. Amazing. Well established class! You go Professor!
Such a funny professor :) I recieved an A!
Welcomes all views and welcomes discussions. She comes off as tough in the beginning but as time goes on, she is SO FUNNY and EXCELLENT! Her exams are mainly multiple choice and essay, but are very easy. She tells you where to read in the text for the exam answers. EASY EASY EASY!!!!
As a transfer student and my first pre-req class I found it enjoyable and way too easy. I am a political science major and at the end of the class she even spoke to her students and said she is willing to write recommendations! and also help out anyone as a political science major. Great overall! Drops lowest quiz as well!
She loves her students and offers to write student recommendations. As far as academics, you just need to read and understand and you will succeed. English is my second language and I recieved an A here. Just write and do what you are told! I love this professor and taking her again
Prof Katsanos is an old school teacher and this is the reason why i like her a lot. Her lectures are interesting and very clear. Regarding the grade, we had 3 quizzes, 1 research paper, 1 midterm and 1 final. Pay attention to her notes, read a little on your own and you will get a good grade.
EXCELLENT! There wasn't a class I didn't enjoy. She explains topics in a modern and 5th grade level way. If you don't understand her and give her a bad rating it's definitely due to laziness. It's IMPOSSIBLE to fail unless you want to fail. Don't read the bad reviews because she is very caring, funny and open for discussion. Go Republicans!!
Very happy that I took this class anyway instead of reading the bad reviews. Since it is an introduction class in an urban institution many people do go for free and do not care about their education like the one's who pay and that just reflects on them. This class was way too easy that I needed more of a challenge politically. Then again, it's 101
On her other page there's a series of good reviews lately. I promise you, ALL ARE FALSE (I'd say). Find a real student who took her. Ask them about their experience. She is HORRIBLE. I got an A because I worked around her twisted grading and biased scoring trends. I figured her out. Everyone isn't like that. Toot your own horn by ignoring my review
I love this professor so much! Thank you for being REAL and so funny. Oh yeah, exams are a breeze.
Everyone who clearly disagrees with her or the way she teaches (which is EASY) is probably because of the individuals lack of knowledge or goes for free and doesnt care about school. This professor is very inspiring and a gem! :)
The only class that you can actually be a Republican and have your VIEW listened to. Thank you, professor.
This professor was very tolerant and accepting of views of a Republican student who had arguements based on FACTS and LOGIC. Thank you for this class for not being liberal only. Enough already. Easy class, great professor! Easy A
I honestly enjoy her class she waznt like most professors I had and she wants to hear what everybody be thinking. She makes you wanna think more and her exams are pretty eazy tbh.
Solid choice.
She really changed herself due to these reviews and word of mouth. She definitely takes into consideration other students questions and feelings. She has gotten a lot better and clear than her previous years. She drops lowest quiz. She literally gives you word for word what's on the exam and where. She definitely gotten easier.
AMAZING PROFESSOR WHO LOVES TO HEAR STUDENTS VIEWS
She is very lecture-heavy. Even though she allows note taking on the computer she will call you out if you are on your phone or not taking notes. She gives a very dismissive attitude when asked a question or for clarification. She gives a lot of quizzes, about 2 papers, a midterm and a final.(and are all graded harshly).
I don't know why this professor is literally butchered on here, overall great class, interesting lectures, very funny, but her tests, man oh man. She tells you everything that's going to be on it but it is very heavy.
Prof Katsanos is amazing! She cares for every student and gives VERY engaging lectures. You will definitely learn a lot in her class. She gives quizzes, midterm, final, and a research paper which is not a lot. If you come to class, pay attention you will definitely pass. She will layout her test reviews and make sure you know what to study for.
Kind to students and truly wants you to understand the material. Very straight forward class; would recommend anyone who doesnt frequently miss class. (Lectures are much easier to understand than textbook).
IN MY *OPINION,* either she has changed her ways, teaching (content and delivery) DRASTICALLY within the past two years or the positive review flow isn't as genuine as it appears (more like damage control to YEARS of reviews with a bunch of recurring good ones). Hmm. Anyway, as a 4.0 scholar, believe you me this was my worst professor at JJAY.
I sympathize with anybody who falls for the overflow of recurrent (all within the last few months, same substance different verbiage), positive reviews and enrolls. This professor was the rudest, most disorganized, negligent, and inclined-to-go-off-on-tangents-for-40-minutes instructor. Extremely difficult as a professor and person both. Good luck
I think she's ok as in if you're super smart you'll be good around her disorganization but I dont recommend
She gives amazing lectures, she makes sure you understand the material very well. I was surprised at these other ratings, because she is actually great, I would take her again. 2 tests, 3 quizzes and one 6pg term paper.
Even at times like this, she doesn't care about students and makes it hard for them. Makes 40 question exam 37 minutes, to avoid "dishonesty". can't even think about a question for a minute. Other professors help their students knowing its tough time but she doesn't care. Also a very boring class, don't recommend. Tons of quizzes and papers.
Does not matter how hard you work, there will always be an issue. I was graded harshly after doing well on all her assignments and the feedback on why my grade was bad was something I actually did. Didnt make sense. She didnt change her mind. My easiest class yet my lowest grade. Pick another prof if you can.
straight up annoying. got a grade I did not deserve and when I tried to talk to her about it she just didn't understand what I was saying or even consider changing her mind. extremely frustrating and unfair.
She is a good person, very funny and very understanding. Her in class lectures were easy to understand as long as you did your reading, however when it got to remote learning she was a bit confusing. But overall she's great.
This professor really be great and to the point. I'm glad I took her. Easy n fair grader. Will take her again
Not sure if I gained a 6 pack from laughing or a new love for political science. She rocks!!
Very caring and understanding. I wish I took her sooner
Very clear. Way too easy. Follow the syllabus and stay up to date n you will pass with flying colors. She is such a great art to john jay college and very respected. She knows how to teach n carry the class forward. I respect her she learned alot. I recommend her to begin building in POL/GOV 101 and on
Her lectures are amazing and informative. The books are a great read and easy to understand. Very well respected and conducted class efficiently. A++++
This professor is one of the best at John Jay. I understand all her lectures and assignments and was graded fairly on everything. Study, learn, write, and you will succeed with flying colors.
Do not read the bad reviews. This professor cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. Everything was clear and to the point. Participation matters
Her class dope and she real with it.
She truly cares about every one of her students. Im not sure if distance teaching is her strong suit, as she is difficult to reach sometimes. Lots of easy assignments, two papers, two exams and a few quizzes but she gives clear expectations and study guides for all of them. Pay attention and youll be fine.
We switched to remote learning during the middle of the semester because of COVID. Many people were sick and she still gave many writing assignments. But what was worse was when she only gave us 40 minutes for a 35 question test for both the final and midterm. No review or anything to help prepare. How she handled things during this crisis was poor
Prof. Katsanos is average. Not the best, not the worst. I'm pretty sure there are better prof for POL 101 than her. She doesn't know how to teach, you have to teach yourself thru the textbook. She doesn't give feedback on work and lectures are boring. She grades things too late. 2 quizzes, midterm with short essay, 6 page term paper, and a final.
A respected professor! Easy to get an A for her class! One quiz, midterm, one final exam, and a final research paper. She gives a review sheet and exams are super easy. Lectures do get dragged on but she does explain the concepts well & is lenient on several things. Just need to communicate with her! Do not buy the textbook, find it for free online
Show up and take notes, you should pass. We had two papers and I'd say I was graded unfairly. We never got homework and for our tests there were some questions that repeated and weren't accurate.
She teaches really well. She is so patient with her students and really wants them to learn. She grades by a couple of quizzes, a midterm, a final and a research paper. If you read the textbook and listen to her lectures, its an easy class.
Professor is ridiculous with her logic and reasoning in the course, does not comply with the feelings of students and solely looks to give the worst outcomes for students. Do not take her class if you want to have time to do work for your other classes. I looked at the ratings prior to taking her class and I thought it wouldn' be that bad but it is
Prof Katsanos is a really good professor. She has fixed criteria for the grading. She tells you all the ways you can get an A in the class. 3 quizzes 1 mid-term, 1 final, and 1 research paper. 1 quiz dropped. You won't regret taking her.
The online classes were very lecture heavy. Not the best and not the worst either. She was very lenient and fair with my class. She provided some extra points. There's not too much work to do in the class and make sure to communicate with her.
I dread this class and it stresses me out so much. She can be so rude to students and barely ever responds to emails. Just don't take her. No one even pays attention in zoom its just boring. Better off reading the textbook tbh
She can be a bit snarky, but nice and helpful overall. For online POL101 she gave out SO MUCH to read and many small assignments that were honestly a little dumb (videos, podcasts, etc), but the topics were easy and she was not a though grader. She gives very clear guidelines, extra credit and many opportunities for late work.
Professor Katsanos can be hit or miss. The workload is manageable, but her grading can be inconsistent. Attending lectures and using resources like the textbook and Unstuckstudy are key to success in this class.
Would not recommend at all to take her online. I took her thinking it was going to be easy and straight to the point. I was wrong. Her assignments were extremely annoying. As a part time worker and full time student, being forced to make videos or podcasts that are like 15 minutes long is atrocious and a waste of time. I don't have time for that.
