The class was very difficult. She's very intimidating as well. As soon as you hear her talk you instantly feel stupid. She's willing to meet with students but isn't very helpful. I met with her, she said I was doing fine and on the right track and I got a failing grade! Whats that about?
still taking the class. so far she is very helpful. smart and likes to talk about more than just writing. i am very excited that she brings up current events and controversial topics, and she lets us talk stuff out and get our ideas out. definitely a real professor, seems like she doesn't take crap from people, very strong minded. A+ in my book!
still taking this class & i'm completely stressing!! ahhH!! i hope i pass. don't take if you have no interest in eng & just want a passing grade. do take if you enjoy eng & all that junk tho.
This is the best critical thinking class I've ever had. She made it so interesting that I enjoyed every minute of it. She does use the book but your grade will mainly depend on how well you express a logical, coherent argument on your 3 major essays.
If you don't care about questioning what you have been taught so far, you will end up blaming her & dropping the class, which is very common among IVC students. If you enjoy challenging ideas, she's the one. She's an open-minded, critical, and helpful REAL professor. The emphasis is not on memorizing stuff... but on reasoning.
For the first comment: She could be seen as a mirror. It won't show anything that it's not there already.
Very helpful professor. If you are having trouble with your essays she is available to meet with you and guide you in the right direction. Interesting lectures, approachable, and she has a great sense of humor. I promise you wont be bored in this class. Prof Shaner is great and IVC is lucky to have her!
Worst teacher ever doesnt explain a single thing. expects students to know what she is talking about.
Great Professor, she is very clever and helpful. The class is not easy, but overall you get more out of it than any other 201 class. You are expected to have good writing skills. If you don't like the class then you must be a sophist... jk, oh and know your fallacies.
An asset to IVC. This class was extremely challenging but very fun and I feel helped me grow as both a reader and writer. You will not regret taking this course unless of course you fear a challenge.
She is not good in explaining things. She thinks that ivc students are stupid.
Plain and simply, she rocks. I had a lot of fun in the class which is good. I got an incomplete because I did not turn a paper and I assume she had mercy on my soul. I have to get it going so I finish the paper. I think she is a very good teacher--not that common at IVC. I sincerely hope she goes on to a more prestigious university soon.
Great class, BUT if you are not prepared to work, better not take it. I love the class because I get to say my opinions without being penalized.
I've never been good at English but I felt like this class was such a burden. She underestimates IVC students immensely. I also felt that the essay assignments weren't very clear, there were a lot of "gaps" that were left for the students to interpret. My advice: don't take this professor, opt for Zielinski instead.
I really disliked this class. I don't mind working hard, but what I had to do to just understand the topic, was ridiculous. I often got frustrated. She likes to drone on and on when answering questions that you never really asked, while leaving you more confused than before. If you do take her, don't take the 3 hour block. It's torture.
My favorite teacher at IVC. Granted, I am an English major so I took a lot of classes from her. She's very passionate about her subject and honestly wants students to learn. She does require a lot of work and her classes aren't easy. If you're having trouble, just talk to her. She's more than willing to help.
If you do not like writing long essay, reading boring books or simply just do not enjoy english do not take her. It was a complete waste of time for me. Don't get me wrong she does dread you with tons of information, but if you're a science major there's no point in caring to read about Shakespeare. My advice only take her if you are a engl major.
she is a good teacher and love what she does. the class overall is not easy and if you are willing to put effort on it you can pass the class. you have to read a couple of books that may be quite hard to read but at least I learned a lo from this class and now most of my other engl classes are not that hard once you pass with shaner
She was probably one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. Sincerely after taking her class I feel like I learned something. She will make you work for you grade, but if you need help she will help you out alot you just need to ask. Regardless what major you are you should take her class.
One word for her class: CONFUSING. She's very confusing and talks and talks and eventually gets you even more confused. Her essays and exams are very difficult and doesn't even prepare you well for them! More than half the students end up dropping her class and her class is always the last one to fill up with students. Coincidence perhaps?
honestly i think this is the best instructor i've had in my academic life. initially i thought i couldn't make a good grade but when i settled down and tried to be present in all her classes i found out i learnt alot. God bless Shaner
I had her first for ENG 101 and now again for 201. I thought it would be easier now that I already know her but not really. She asks alot from her students and is a tough grader. She knows her stuff. She may seem intimidating but go see her after class for clarification. Don't wait til last min to do the essays! Teaches you what you need to know.
Shaner was seriously my favorite English professor. She's smart and definitely knows what she's doing. Her class is hard work so don't take her if you want an easy grade.
Dont take this class if you want to be confused and stressed out. Class started off packed, the semester is almost finished and the class is down to 15-20 people now. Many people have dropped due to the fact that her assignments and teaching is unclear. Tends to drone on and on about certain things, expects students to know everything she does.
Boring Class. If you are not interested in ENG dont take is class! She knows what she is teaching, She is a good teacher, but hard to pass if the class is boring for you.
boring class ! she knows what she has to teach but makes it completely boring with monotone for the whole hour, will not pass class if not motivated, i do not recommend taking her class at all.
She's a pretty tough grader, but she does offer provisions. You will have to study and work hard to pass her class!!
Shaner is a good teacher and you'll learn a lot to have good essays with stronger vocab. There's no hw except reading a book and studying. The MLA book isn't needed at all. Essays make your grade and she lets you turn them in for a better grade. If English isn't your favorite subject DO NOT take this class. it is boring and hard.
This class has to be one of the most boring and annoying class I have taken, she makes it so confusing and talks to students as if we knew as much as her, she also makes some annoying voice after every sentence that doesn't let you concentrate, I wouldn't recommend it at all, really dreaded going to every class
Professor Shaner is best described as tough but fair. She let's you know exactly what is expected, but leaves room for flexibility and creativity. During lectures, Professor Shaner demonstrates clear mastery of subject matter and an ability to clearly pass knowledge on to students. In this class, expect to work, but also expect to grow and learn.
I was extremely confused the entire semester! For someone who has always done well in English, I found it nearly impossible for me to grasp and understand the lectures or the essay prompts in general. She goes into too much detail. We typically only cover a small portion of what is to be learned while the rest is up to you to learn.
She is a great teacher. She provides alot of details but each one is crucial so pay attention! WARNING you have to think out the box! If you don't this class ain't for you. This class is a non slacker so be ready to learn. Don't complain if you don't understand. High school English is a joke. Anybody who is willing to progress learn should take her
If you want to learn how to improve your writing then take her class
VERY boring with too much unnecessary details. Also far too picky on very minor details in essays.
Professor Shaner is the best teacher I have ever had. Yes, it's hard work but it's extremely purposeful. I have learned some of the most important things in the two classes I have taken from her than any other in my education career. I only wish I could take another! I highly recommend her to anyone looking for development in their critical reason
Couldn't really comprehend the point of her lectures. She would pretty much just drone on and on about fake propaganda and other meaningless subjects. Would not recomend her to anyone!
Too boring and so difficult ! Do not take this class .
Not easy. However, you'll learn and will be ready for upper level courses. Best option.
Not easy. If you want to learn and be ready for upper level courses, this is the class to take. She's a good professor and as long as you put the effort and try, you will pass. She gives many opportunities to revise your essays to get a better grade.
Professor Shaner is quite a challenging professor if you ask me. She takes away a lot of points for essays but you have the chance to turn them in once for a better grade. She's not very good at making the class varied in lectures/work, but it's still a doable class. Despite all this, I wouldn't recommend her class unless you got no other choice.
Best professor at IVC! I wish I could take another class with her. Easy A if you do all the work and apply her feedback. I couldn't recommend her enough. Everything (grading criteria, lectures, prompts, etc) is clear and fair.
She's a social justice warrior. A special snowflake. Looking only to express her snowflake agenda. If you want to learn about white supremacy, anti-capitalism and how everything you've learned up until her class is not right, then she is the teacher for you.
Mrs. Shaner is a great professor. She knows her subject and clearly explains the rules of the game. If you follow the rules, pay attention and take notes, you have an excellent chance on passing the class. She is very helpful and goes above and beyond to help. I highly recommend her.
Shaner is very fair in grading. From day one, she will make it crystal clear what her expectations for the class are. You are given a chance to rewrite all four essays which can help increase your grade. Her lectures are interesting and help immensely when trying to create your essay. If you put the effort into your essays, it will not go unnoticed
Mrs. Shaner is by far one of the best professors I've taken at IVC. She was very helpful with writing tips and showed that she cared. Shaner has a craft for English and is always available for office hours. I can honestly say after taking her class, I have gained more confidence as a writer.
If you dont think like she does you will NOT pass!!
I struggled all semester writing papers but still manage to do them, my scores will not be bad but not good either, profesor Shaner helps you out as long as you show you wanna learn and pass, I was guaranteed to fail but Shaner changed my writing skills in one week and I managed to pass the class, she is very proffesional & cares so talk to her!!!!
Shaner is a really great professor, actually, the first one I have ever considered my first real professor at IVC.
Her class is extremely difficult as it requires you to dive deep into your personal understanding of English itself, and then forces you to realize that you are not a good writer. However, you can become one! And that is the purpose of her class. She allows you to re-submit your essays to get that A! Overall, she rambles about politics. rate 15/10!
I thought I enrolled for an advanced composition course but instead ended up in a liberal propaganda course. If you want to learn real composition dont even consider her. I always do well in essays but because I said the wrong thing I was given Ds. I wouldnt recommend her to anyone, not even my worst enemy.
It was one of the hardest classes Ive ever had to take & I really had to push everything I knew aside to understand. She was willing to meet me for office hours & clarify anything she had given to study. It was a different method that she teaches from what Im used to but she honestly taught me to much. Key in this class is to be open minded.
Your writing skills will be challenged. This was the hardest class Ive ever taken but I still got an A and you can too if you ask for help, do your work, and study hard. You can retake quizzes and resubmit papers. Shes always happy to help so dont hesitate to ask questions. Good professor, although she gets off-topic and talks about politics.
Literally the worst teacher ever. You will not pass the class if you do not have the same political views as her. I expressed myself about a political topic which she assigned and she did not grade me on anything that had to do with English but graded me on my opinion and gave me a 0. She shouldn't even be allowed to teach.
Absolutely the best English professor at IVC by a long shot. She could literally not be more clear about her expectations in grading, and doesnt hold English as a second language against you if youre honest about previous English teachings. Ive had nearly every English prof. at IVC and nobody compares in regards to intelligence and understanding
This was my not so favorite class. I mean the lectures felt more like us critiquing the work versus actually analyzing it and connecting it to the time period. It is a survey course. Her teaching is very peculiar so this would be my last resort option. I transferred and I had to retake these courses and funnily enough i passed both with an A so yea
Horrible how she speaks to her students. She is so rude and does not care to see her students strive. Very political and if you do not agree with what she says you will fail. Do not take this course you will fail.
This is the worst professor ever! Her grading is so tedious to the point of being ridiculous. She is so political too and seems as if what other professors taught me was wrong. Her quizzes are hard and does not let you see what you missed. The "track changes" you have to do to revise an essay is so tedious and has no purpose. Horrible professor.
If I could give a zero I would. Steer away from this professor, please. If students dont agree with her political ideology, she will fail you. Take it from my experience.
Absolute worst teacher I have ever had in school. If you do not agree with her political agenda she will fail you. She does not give a lot of assignments so the grades you get on the few she gives really impact your grade. She makes you do "track changes" for your essays when revising. Most tedious thing ever. Overall terrible prof, steer clear.
Do not take this class if you want to feel lost the whole course. Shaners assignments make no sense and to me had little educational value. She does get into politics and is very biased in her grading using her own beliefs into account. I felt like she was just doing too much, and didnt really even explain the papers well. DO NOT TAKE CLASS!!!!!!
The professor is unorganized online. She assigns about 4 assignments 2 days prior to the due date. Essays are not worth it and the book is not interesting. Dodge a bullet and don't get this class.
Her coursework followed strengthening your critical thinking skills+detecting fallacies. In her notes she dives deep into historical events, authoritarian groups, & types of ideology. Papers in this class impact your grade heavily but youre allowed to revise your work. We have to purchase an e-book ($6). If youre Inquisitive this class is for u!
I respect this professor and based on the three classes I've attended, I do agree with what she says. She is a nice person and is understanding about personal issues. Grading seems clear. Although, I do have to drop it since it seems like a tough class, and the grading might be difficult. Very lecture heavy and lasts the full 2 hrs and 45 minutes.
Im a straight A's student and almost fail her class.Super tough grader. She will base your grade of your political opinion. I seriously thought I was going insane since most teachers love my essays but now I see im not the only one with this problem. For the first days I genuinely thought I was in the wrong class, she mostly rambles about politics.
This professor was awful. Seems like all she wanted to do was talk about politics and did not seem I was in a politic class instead of an English class. Would not recommend.
I took her ENG110 course during my first year at IVC ... one of the worst mistakes I've made in college thus far. We were given several lengthy papers, graded very harshly, quizzes were difficult to understand, and the material she typed for us was hard to follow and often odd for the course. Hardest class I've taken and it was beginner's English
Shaner takes a lot of time lecturing but her lectures are very repetitive. She grades based on 4 essays and around 5-7 tests that are based on the material she posts online. If you need help with anything in your essays she will help. She also opens up essays again at the end of the semester to give you a chance to revise and get a better grade.
If youwant to pass with a good grade, then read. Lots of readings with difficult tests and 4 essays in total. She can talk for the full 3 hours so be prepared. If you are someone who is not an auditory learner, or has a short attention span, I would choose someone else. She is really nice, and like people said she does talk about politics.
Lectures are heavy, she can talk for hours and you can get lost easily. The tests are hard so you do have to read the books to pass the exams. I wouldn't take her again but I guess she is the only one who teaches ENGL 201. There are 3 mini-essays (2 pages long at least), 3 exams, and 1 research project (8 pages long).
The reading book was complicated since my English is my second language.
Doesn't really give good feedback, quizzes and muted and you don't get to see your grades right after completing an assignment. Low cost book is a plus ($7 rental) and she provides the important information. The vocabulary she uses is too advanced for many students including myself so I do constantly struggle to understand and need to look up terms
Difficult class
This class was the most difficult class I've ever taken. The professor is an extremely tough grader, but I appreciate that she leaves good feedback and allows students to edit their papers and resubmit them at the end of the semester to improve their grades. It's important to read the instructions on assignments carefully and ask questions.
This class was very difficult and she is a tuff grader. I wouldn't recommend taking this class your first year.
At first, I was nervous about this class since I'm usually not the greatest when it comes to English classes, but this one changed that, this professor helped me and understood me; had more patience for me than no one has ever. I would totally recommend taking the class! Warning there is a lot of homework.
Avoid her at all costs, purposely goes out of her way to make things hard for you, not very friendly
Very tough-grader. Several essays throughout the class, the last one was based on a book with heavy reading schedules and weekly quizzes. She does let you rewrite the essays if you want too and you have until grades are due to do so. I recommend reading carefully and writing very thoroughly. Try your best to follow the rubric best you can.
Teacher is tough and not really nice. Asked her for help several times on citing and to give me feedback and never responded to me. I expressed my concern to her about my canvas and not being able to see some of the material i cant even see my grade and she preceded to sent out an email to the whole class saying that its the student fault not hers.
At first, I thought people exaggerated about her class. But after the first assignments, I realized it wasn't for me. Grading starts at zero, so expect Ds and Cs. She takes long to grade, gives vague feedback, and her instructions are confusing. Deadlines are odd, like 4 PM or 8 AM. The class is too political, and grammar is heavily emphasized.
i read all her reviews on here and thought she couldn't be that bad..... she is. she's not a friendly professor, she does not help with feedback, her vocabulary is very advanced for a first year class, most people here don't even have english as a first language, she expected our essays to be literal pieces of art, her instructions are NOT clear.
Sign up for this class if you want to learn about Jewish people and antisemitism. To pass, you must know exactly how to write an essay in MLA format and correctly use transition words. She notices small details. Don't disagree, just write about Jewish people as victims or she'll basically say “this isn't what I asked for.” and take away points.
Took this professor in 2023. The class was online and she showed us a picture of her dog instead of herself. My english background prior to college was really good and yet I still struggled. She claimed that up until her class we knew nothing about english. I was also docked 7 points from my final for 3 small mistakes. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Maybe I'm not an english person but its A LOT of work I had to withdraw because it was too much... listen to people on here. It's a class for beginners but the english is so advanced I was so lost, the text needs to be read on canvas or she sents emails with the material. If you do take this keep up because you will fall behind fast. engl c1000
not for everyone a republican who wants to make you into a full-throated Zionist via an online class and a proud European in that
all the othr peeps said it already but I don't know why she teaches White-Americn history nd Ashknazi Jewsh history in place of requird English at a Latino-majority community college; she would be happier when moved to an area of White Americans and Askenazi Jews who have interest in this
the professorial equivalent of an AIPAC attack ad against Jamaal Bowman that uses a filter to darken his hands a bit
this is PRO-ISRAEL English. Folks let's keep it a buck, thousands showed up on the shores of Historic Palestine in the 1870s and one side won the war. Now one side wants to return (the other would want to too if lost). Shaner wants you to breath the rhetoric used by the Zionist side at her through the Microsoft Word Doc.
Just don't take this class. Do not recommend, lots of pointless essays about Jewish people grading policy is stupid and half of the assignments don't make sense and require loads of work to only be worth 1 point DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
DO NOT GET THIS CLASS! This class has so many stupid assignments requirements and they are only worth a few points the professor is very picky with how you turn in the assignments so beware. Gives out lots of pointless essays and assignments in my opinion. A huge mistake taking this class save yourself the stress and avoid getting this "teacher".
I'd rather get ran over than take her class again… not a good professor and belittles you in the submission comments
