Really enthusiastic about the material.
Amazing teacher. She loves her the material. Very smart, funny, laid back, cool. She is AWESOME. I would definitely recommend this professor to anyone. She gives practice tests online which are the test. Just take it multiple times to ensure you get all the possible questions.
She is an awesome teacher!!! I highly recommend her to any student. She makes Evolution fun and easy to understand. Attendance is not required, but highly encouraged. Exams are based on the chapter quizzes found on the textbook website.
She tries way to hard to fit in with the students, often joking around in a way a teenage girl would. If thats your cup of tea, take her, but if you'd rather learn the subject, I'd avoid . She puts 'sample' tests up before each test, which is her actual tests with the answers mixed around. I attended maybe 50% of the time and got an A.
As someone who has studied evolution independent of the class, I find it to be too focused on microevolution instead of macroevolution, which tended to make it another genetics class and didn't answer many of the questions people have about evolution. In any case, Steel is quirky with a weird sense of humor, but a good teacher nonetheless.
Dr. Steel is very nice, very helpful and very good at teaching. Although she is a little nerdy, she means well and does a good job at keeping the information interesting. Attendance is not required and I would highly recommend NOT buying the book. Do her practice tests 10 times and you will get a good grade.
Exams are easy---I mean, they're available online so all you have to do is memorize the answers. HOWEVER, very tough to get an A as her scientific paper is worth 100 pts and the class ave for this is 48. This part will significantly bring your grade down so expect a B- or B as your highest possible grade.
She is somewhat of a decent teacher. Her tests are easy, except for the essay questions, which she basically pulls out of thin air. The scientific paper she requires seems easy, but she is heavy handed with the red ink. I do not suggest anyone to take her class, unless you have time to read all the chapters in the book.
I am an A/B student in all my classes, but agree that everything is presented as if it is easy then you get ripped apart on grades....should have had an A, will probably get a C due to Research Paper, I'm pre-med and this one class is going to crush my gpa...only required for degree not med school, non the less, this prof will destroy GPA's
I heard bad things about her, but she took her criticism seriously and has changed to be a really good teacher who cares about her students. Its really easy as long as you pay attention and study. Love her!!
She never ever pass back any of our tests, so we never knew how she graded the essay questions. She's always so slow on grading, so even if she expl. the essay ques. i would've forgotten what i've wrote down. I did 1 hw in january and 1 hw in march, she didn't post the grades until may. Test ques. are mostly from online practice test.
She decided to change up the entire course Spring 2012 semester. Students practically passed her class barely with a C. She never grades ANYTHING on time. Take the online quizzes and just hope that the universe is in your favor!
Very interesting teacher and helps clarify the subject through many relate-able examples. She is very fair because she does not test on things that she does not teach in class. I highly advice taking the practice quizzes on line to prepare for her tests.
I thought she was an awesome professor. She is very clear about what is expected of students, and as far as I am concerned she is very fair about her grading. To the med student who could not pass cell biology with anymore than a C, you need think about a new career, because I sure as hell would not want you to be my doctor.
Took her over the summer for evolution, loved her! She's funny and super nice, very easy to approach. The tests are very fair, know the pictures she shows you in the slides. She gives you 5-6 essay ?s and you only have to answer 2, and she hints at what the questions will be about. HIGHLY recommend her.
She is super funny and makes class interesting. Watch out for all the online assignments due. 1 assignment per chapter and there is 15 chapters, it's easy to forget about an assignment. She gives a lot of chances for extra credit and the final exam is not cumulative. She is not good at keeping up with grades, you won't find them out till the end.
The class was super easy. I did minimum work and still received an A. She is very excited about the material taught which is probably the best thing about the class. However, she does NOT grade in a timely manner. We would receive our grades for the last exam right before the next one. Hard to know where you stand that way. A bit frustrating.
Thought this class would be an easy A. Let me tell you that my Thermodynamics class is going way better than this one! And it's not just me! The entire class is doing terrible on her tests and it's ONLINE! Take another teacher if you can!
This class is absolutely amazing. It isn't easy, but it is a 200 level class. I'm in LOVE with this subject now. Any questions you have she emails you back almost IMMEDIATELY and gives you 100% clarity on what is expected and when. I'm a terrible test taker and I've gotten C's and above on the tests. STUDY, LISTEN, LEARN! She is passionate and smart
This class was challenging but forced students to think outside of the parameters. Very interesting
First I hate micro subjects. All test were online which is great, you don't feel pressured. Her lectures are very informative and she tries to put things into perspective. She also speaks "student" language, meaning she doesn't try and make you feel dumb. You can tell she actually wants you to do well. I wish she taught more classes. She is great!
Reading is the key to the course! Professor Steel is so delightful and helpful and her video lectures are great! It is difficult to take a science course online and I don't recommend doing it. Subjects like these are best learned in a classroom setting. The lab assignments were lengthy so be prepared for those.
Great teacher that loves science. Lectures are interesting and won't put you to sleep. Read the chapters, watch the lecture videos, do the homework, and study if you want a good grade. It's a challenging class, but you will learn a great deal about biological evolution.
Pay attention, take notes on the video lectures, and do the graded work and you'll do fine! Her passion and interest in the material shows, and she really explains things in more of a regular, student way that makes sense. She gives you plenty of resources to prepare for the exams (some questions are taken directly from the practice quizzes!).
Prof. Steele is clear on the first day about every assignment in the course. Do the work and you will pass.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME WOMAN. She's one of the BEST professors I've ever had, she loves her work and she knows her stuff. Exams are all online, clicker questions can be done outside of class, and her lectures are really interesting. She's sarcastic and jokes all throughout class. Seriously, take any class you can with her
She assign so much work as if this is the only class your taking. Her test are not really easy.
Dr. Steel really made the class interesting. The material is dense and you definitely have to read and study to do well.
Test are multiple choice and short answer. Do the practice test! Some questions are exactly the same. Tests are timed and online. She is pretty clear about what will be short answer questions. Be sure to answer the questions thoroughly and answer each part of the question. I wish there would have been more time for some the tests.
I took Steel for evolution and Cell bio. She is an incredibly nice and helpful teacher, but I cannot stand how much she talks about herself! I paid for these classes not C. Steel 101. She likes online stuff so thats nice, but you do need to understand the material to do well, so pay attention in class.
This class was difficult, not due to the information content; but due to HOW MUCH information was required. She knows her stuff, but seems to go one tangents that did not pertain to the lecture. The PPTs had SO MUCH information I could not decipher what was relevant and what was not. I felt like I needed to cram it ALL in to be prepped for tests.
Definitely take Evolution with Dr. Steel. She makes her lectures interesting. She helps make the subject matter easier to understand. She's very down-to-earth, funny, and just an overall good person!
Professor Steel is good. Her class isn't overly difficult and a lot of her exam questions are taken straight from her quizzes. Her lectures are pretty informative, as well as entertaining. I definitely recommend taking this class with her.
I love Dr. Steel. I feel like I know her better than I know Cell Biology lol. The class is hard, due to the amount of material, but as long as you pay attention, take a few notes, and do the homework, you'll pass. I definitely should have went to class more, because the ppts are so long, but I highly recommend taking her.
I have taken 2 classes with her at this point and she is one of my favorite teachers.. Her class was interesting. She puts in effort to help students when they need it and emails back relatively quickly. Her tests are doable as long as you pay attention in class. I will warn though, she takes forever to grade, so be prepared to wait after exams.
She is a wonderful teacher. She really loves what she does and inspires me to do more in the science field. I love the side information she adds; she is full of fun facts. If you pay attention to her lectures, do the homework, and read the book, you will be fine. She offers extra credit and is always available for help.
Wonderful professor! She is a little all over the place but that helps me learn. She welcomes questions and clearly has a passion for the material.
Amazing professor! Her lectures aren't boring and she understands that we're college students that have other classes. Put in the work for her class and you'll get the grade you earned.
She's one of the best or maybe the best professor I've had here at ODU. I took her for Cell Biology and she did a good job of making the class easier than it could have been, given how complicated the class is. All I had to do was make sure I made it to class. She gives a fair amount of homework, no tests (at least for Cell bio).
Her BIO293 has no tests, which I'm sure most loved but I wasn't a fan. I felt like I had no idea of how I was doing the entire semester grade wise. Her lectures are good, she's good at breaking down tough info. LOTS of work right at the end of the semester, assigns research papers at the very end of the semester.
Prof Steel is super kind, and her online lectures are interesting. Each chapter involves a reading and vocab quiz, along with discussion or online labs relating to the topics covered. She takes FOREVER to respond to emails, however, and she gets behind on the material. She has a clear course schedule, though it wasn't completed by end of semester.
Too much odd technologies stuffs to buy and use for assignments. Confusing emails. Takes a long time to respond to email.. interesting professor but requires much effort.
Dr. Steel has no place in higher ed and needs to stay in the lab. No feedback, over 3 weeks to grade a test, and never replies to emails. Requires labs for a 3 hr course, I want my 4th hour of credit. I am doing well in the course, but think it is too much for a 200 level course.
I highly recommend Dr. Schroeder. One thing that you do need to watch out for is that (in the online class) a couple test questions are not covered in the lecture. If do the required reading though, you wont have any problems. Older version of the textbook is fine also, which is great.
She's okay. She's great at making hard material easy, but she takes weeks to respond to emails and upload grades. I feel like she's always behind. Hard to take has an online class, because she is constantly correcting her own mistakes and it can get confusing since we can't ask questions or get help right away. You have to be very independent.
The online course was terrible. It seems like an afterthought for her & instructions for assignments were very confusing. Online homework was very lengthy & the depth of the scientific literacy assignments seems unnecessary for this level. Assignments are due collectively on 3 separate dates which makes it difficult to gauge where you should be.
I got an A+ in her Cell Bio Class online. But it was not because of her. She can take weeks to respond to emails and the course is extremely unorganized. In order to do well you have to care and be incredibly organized yourself. She is kind & gives extra credit but she is way too unorganized for an online class. Never was sure when stuff was due.
She kept the content relatively simple and related it to common things everyone knows and can understand. She tells a lot of personal stories and is really funny. There's a lot of online homework, most just time consuming than difficult.
Dr. Steel is a great professor!! The lectures were very informative and helpful. She always gave great examples to clarify topics that were confusing. There is hw online and quizzes online after every chapter, also some writing assignments throughout the semester. Definitely recommend!!
Takes forever to reply to emails and messages. Redefines "tentative." Changes due dates, posts incorrect quizzes and homework assignments, but has very creative excuses. Foisted a new version of Blackboard upon us to the detriment of my grade. I'm sure her class is much better in person, because it could not get worse than taking her online.
she is a good professor, has a passion for her field. Good lecturer and does know what she is talking about. All of her quizes for cell bio are online, no tests, no final. There are two decent papers to do, discussion forums online even for traditional students and online videos to watch. No real tests didn't learn as much as I should have.
She is a good lady, passionate, but you will only learn 20% of what you should. Her quizes do not reflect her lectures, they are all online. If she wants an accurate gauge of student knowledge she needs to do real tests/quizes. I was hoping for so much more from this class. some parts are great, the quizes are ridiculous though.
Took her online and LOVED her. Long lectures - prepare ahead of time. 1 quiz a week. Online packback and homework. Only downfall is she doesn't grade in a timely manner nor respond to emails. If you need help, forget it. Go to her office. She is SO passionate about teaching. Taking her for Ecology next semester. ABSOLUTELY TAKE HER ONLINE
Dr. Steel is great! She is very caring and funny! I really enjoyed her class and she has made me love biology more. Pay attention in class. Watch her lectures she has available on youtube and you will certainly get an A! She only tests you on what she teaches. Gives extra credit and will reopen the labs if you ask nicely!
This professor defined laziness to the next level. We went an entire semester without her updating anything. The weekend before the last day, she uploaded instructions for a paper we were supposed to work on the entire semester. I was very excited for this class but it ended up being a total waste of time and i didnt learn anything.
Several larger assignments were not posted until exam week, which just added to the stress of exams. We went months without having assignments uploaded only to have them piled on all at once.
online class, and she is barely reachable through email. very unorganized besides assignments she already had uploaded on blackboard. had a paper that we were supposed to be working on throughout the semester, nothing was uploaded about it until the last week of the semester, and even now none of us know what to do. learned nothing.
The syllabus stated that we were going to be working on a group research project all semester, but she uploaded the assignment on the last day of class, and gave us less than a week to get the whole paper done on top of all our other finals. She is very unorganized.
This is a GPA booster class. Easy A class. Literally did not watch any of the lecture videos because they were so long (4hrs). quizzes are not tough at all. No exams! but one there is one paper and she literally posted at the end of the semester the week of finals.
Professor did not grade my final paper even though I turned it in and gave me a 0 on it. She only graded it after I contacted her boss and ignored my prior emails up to that point. She also uploaded the final paper assignment during exam week when it should have been uploaded weeks before that point. Do not take this class online.
Dr. Steel is the cat's pajamas. Her lectures were dynamic, engaging, and thorough. I had the pleasure of taking both her Evolution and Cell Bio classes and loved them. They are extremely homework heavy and you have to be able to time manage especially if you're a non-traditional student (I didn't, so I only got B's in both). Totally enjoyed both!
i just finished this class online and it was the worst experience i have ever had. i had to pay out of pocket unnecessary tools for the class like backpack and beaker for the labs and they did not help me with the content in the course at all. I also had a issue with some grading and the teacher went MIA for 3 Weeks out of the 6 week course.
WORST PROFESSOR I have EVER had. She is unaccesible via email and will not respond back to you. Her tests are impossible. Took online and with over 20 pages of notes, still failed her exams. Do not bother taking this class. Formal complain pending from over a dozen students. No textbook and her lectures are long and rambling.
The WORST professor i've had at ODU. We were supposed to be given an entire semester to submit an e-portfolio project and she didn't give assignment instructions until the second to last week of school. She complains when too many people email her over mistakes that SHE makes. She makes you buy 3 different platforms. EVERY test has a mistake on it
Horrible is the only description i can give. Got a question? too bad! She does not respond to emails and gives excuses, stating that is it her students are a fault for emailing her in the first place. Every test has issues and it takes her months to address them, if she even does. The class material should be easy but with her it's not.
Professor Steel is awful at responding to questions/emails, pushes material back because she doesnt upload materials in time, and always has errors on exams. Questions with the same answers more than once, etc. Also, her modified grading scale is unfair. No other class requires a 95 for an A but her. Wouldnt recommend.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. Shes unorganized. Inconsiderate as she makes several mistakes in her tests and gets mad when you tell her about them. Acts like your stupid when you go to her for help. And is horrible at emailing back. Her tests are IMPOSSIBLE to do well on as her lectures dont include everything tested on. An A is a 95 and up...
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! I had a 4.0 GPA. I would like to think I am a good student but this professor - UGH! Mistakes in EVERY TEST. She gets mad when I correct her over something she messed up that messed up MY GRADE AND THEN DOESNT FIX IT! She is one of the WORST professors at ODU and I have never been so frustrated in my life. DO NOT TAKE.
DO NOT TAKE- especially online. She uses FOUR different platforms for assignments which makes it so tough to know what is due and when. This is the most unorganized course I've taken in my three years of college! I had a 4.0 and this class ruined it. I take amazing notes and carefully listen to each and every lecture and couldn't get an A.
I took Professor Steel in Spring 2020 for Cell Biology. This is the same semester that campuses were closed halfway due to the COVID19 pandemic. However, she was the most understanding professor allowing one week extensions on all homework and more extra credit. Tests are really tough, but other assignments help cushion the grade. I would take her!
Her tests are confusing. You have to read through all her slides while listening to her lecture to knows the answers on her tests. I don't even feel as if the "book" we use for her class is useful to read for the actual test. And emails are useless to send to her. Last time I sent an email I was able to graduate and get married.
She's an energetic professor who loves her subject, but sometimes the work is overwhelming. That's probably due to the fact that the course is heavy in information. But what some of the other reviews about knowing definitions exactly as she said on her powerpoint does matter, especially for her tests. And getting email's back from her can be hard.
She talks a bit too much about certain things that I deem inappropriate. In one of her lectures she went on talking about her depression. I wish you the best Dr. Steel but I'm here to just get information for the class not personal information. Also her grading scale is a 95 for an "A". If it was a 93 for an "A" I'd complain a lot less.
I actually really enjoyed this class. It is a bit difficult and homework heavy but its do able. Her test are difficult and she does have an essay portion. Overall her class isnt too bad.
Hard class. Online lectures were impossible to watch. I was spending 8 hours a day watching them & then I just gave up. 3 hw platforms that you have to buy. The hw helps your grade tho. Dr. Steel is very passionate about the subject and enthusiastic. However, I would not recommend taking this online. Make a friend in the class &help each other
Dr. Steel uses about five different websites besides the provided blackboard. That by the way you have to pay for. I'd prefer a textbook over the price of the five websites. She is unorganized and has so much due in different places. She's a really nice professor and is willing to work with you. But as a person I need organization to succeed.
I've seen many people complaining about her lack of organization for due dates. She literally has a schedule posted in her syllabus so IDK what they're talking about. No study sheet, but she teaches you how to make one which is helpful. The only thing making this class hard is the ePortfolio paper! Everything else is interesting to learn.
Dr. Steel is a phenomenal lecturer and loves what shes teaching. Go to class and youll pass! Exams can be difficult, so study!! She provides extra credit opportunities. Only wish we did not have to purchase so many subscriptions. Projects helps cushion lower exam grades!
Dr. Steel is a good professor. I like her she's caring & understanding. Her tests questions are a bit hard. The ePortfolio paper is the most annoying assignment I have done for her other than smart bio and pack-back (she takes forever to grade). However, she is very hard to reach through email. So if it is important don't be afraid to call her.
I definitely liked her as a professor and I think she had just the right personality for this class. On the other hand I didnt care for the fact that the class itself was a one size fits all. It was difficult for bio physics math and ocean/earth science majors to all evaluate each other. I would certainly recommend professor Steel though!
She has a nice personality, but probably one of the worst professors I have had. Makes you pay for multiple homework platforms, never responds to emails, test questions are unfair. Grading takes forever so you don't know what you have in the class, even if its a automated test. Homework has no correlation with any of the material.
makes you use multiple platforms you have to pay for which are expensive, i could have rented a textbook for way cheaper. This is really not necessary and makes it confusing to have assignments due on like 4 different websites.
Professor Steel was great. As long as you watch the lecture videos and study you should be good. The Smart-Biology assignments were easy and helped with learning the material, but don't wait until the last minute to start one. The Packback questions were cool at first but started to get annoying every Sunday. The tests were kind of difficult.
I took an asynchronous version of this course but it was really more of a synchronous course. She did however give a one week grace period of all assignments except for extra credit and exams. I didn't like how I had to spend about $120 on extra class materials since they were required, but smart biology hw did help supplement lecture material.
Dr Steel only had us use 2 platforms for homework, and they were easy. I'd say that out of all the other professors at ODU that teach this class, SHE IS THE ONE THAT YOU WANT... the rest are absolute nightmares based on their reviews. Here's the best part: she offers exam study guides! Although I will say she takes her time responding to emails.
You'll have to spend over $100 for subscriptions to websites to do the homework. The multiple choice part of the tests are hard, essays aren't too bad. I really enjoy her lectures I just wish they correlated more to the tests. She offers a good amount of extra credit which is nice. Takes a while to grade and respond to emails. Not great but not bad
Great Professor. Lectures are long, but, I enjoyed watching them so it was manageable. Assignments are easy. She sets clear grading criteria. Her multiple choice portion of the test is very hard. The essay portion was easy. There was a lot of information to cover, no study guide. Overall taking it in 6 weeks was the only real challenge.
I took cell biology with Dr. Steel, and also immunology, she is such a great professor. I recommend her for all your future classes!!!!
Professor Steel is a fine teacher. Her lectures were solid but her tests are a complete joke. That is the main reason I leave this review because she would have multiple of the same question or even typos in her tests. The questions were made to confuse and annoy you.
Dr. Steel is a hilarious person based on her lectures. She's passionate and knows her material. However, the tests were one the more difficult tests I've taken. The questions are so similar and confusing, I've never doubted myself more. However, if you are moving on into the medical field, it may be good to know the material in and out.
Dr. Steel was an amazing professor. Dr. Steel does weekly quizzes, but she tells you what you will need to study for each quiz. She also gave easy homework assignments each week. There were two papers as well, but they were not difficult at all.
The lectures are interesting and she tells us specifically what we need or don't need to know. She has optional review sessions before every exam that cover just about everything you need to know for an A. There is weekly online homework that you have to pay for, but it's pretty easy. Genuinely one of my favorite professors.
I took Dr. Steel back in Spring 2023, and she was one of the best teachers I've had during college! Her lectures were amazing and helped so much, and the amount of fine detail really helped solidify the info for me. The tests are extremely difficult, but if you get a 100 on all of the smartbio assignments and do everything else, you'll be fine.
Tests are hard BUT the other assignments help a lot with your grade & there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. Clear expectations, follow the rubric, you'll be fine. Very accommodating and happy to help if you have questions. She really seems passionate about teaching biology and cares about her students. I would absolutely recommend.
Dr. Steel is amazing. Even though the material was difficult to fully grasp at times, she acknowledged this fully and tried to make it all as digestible as possible. She holds virtual test reviews the Saturday before the exam. Go to these reviews!!! Homework is in the form of adaptive quizzes which aren't too bad, just a little tedious.
This class was a lot of fun. I think I learned more in this class than I have in any other class at ODU. Dr. Steel is amazing. She allowed you to choose the topics you actually want to learn about. Short, easy quizzes every Friday and easy homework assignments with short 1-2 minutes presentations on the homework.
Dr. Steel is a great professor. She requires attendance but excuses 8 lectures to miss. Do not scan the QR code if you're not in class or try to get away with sending QR's because it will be an honor code violation. She is very accessible in and out of class and you'll get to know a lot about her kitties and her. Utilize the zoom videos for tests.
The best lectures I have had yet. Amazing and super-fast support outside of class. Tests are hard - know the material well before taking them. There is some writing. Overall, the class is time consuming and hard but otherwise engaging, fun, and interesting. Would definitely take again!
Dr. Steel is a great human, but as a professor she honestly isn't that great. I took her Cell Biology course. This course is very information heavy however, her lectures just don't provide the information needed for the tests. The test themselves aren't very balanced either. I would pass on this class if you can.
For a 6 week session, don't take this class. It moves too fast to be able to truly understand anything. The lectures are a bit hard to follow around some of the tangents. Assignments were not always clear, some aren't even mentioned (the final reflection snuck up on us for sure). No one understood the scientific lit paper. This was hard.
This is a very dense course with a lot of hard material. Dr. Steel makes the lectures interesting and is always willing to answer questions or go deeper into the info. Attend the zoom meetings/watch the recordings!!!!!
She's very passionate about immunology and her lectures are engaging. Make sure that you pay attention to her review lectures as they help a lot with her exams. She also gives extra credit and regrades the short answer questions on her exams to give back credit where she can.
Immunology is already a super complex and difficult topic to learn. Dr. Steel made the class easier though. She explained things clearly in class. The tests were a bit difficult sometimes but if you study the notes and do your assignments you should pass. I've taken Dr. Steel for multiple biology classes and she's one of the best biology professors
Professor Steel's BIO293 is challenging but worth it. The lectures are engaging, and the assignments, while not always clear, are manageable. unstuck study proved helpful for test prep along with the exam study guides. Overall, a great course if you put in the effort.
If you want to learn biology, she's not the one. Her weak knowledge base leaves you confused after lectures. She's not open to criticism, grades harshly, and isn't a good mentor. I wish such educators didn't exist—they can make you hate a subject and feel completely discouraged.
Dr. Steel is very sweet and cares about her student whether they are in person or online. Her online Cell Biology class was challenging (due to content) but easy because the way it is set up. If you are having troubles, she will respond to emails within the same day. Overall, I enjoyed her as a professor because she was helpful and kind.
