Great teacher service learning was fun but slightly challenging. If you take this class prepare your speeches. Ill leave it at that
weirdest lady ever but very nice. her service learning class is pretty easy, 3 speeches, online quizes that are cake, 2 exams you need to study for, but its basic stuff. do any extra credit, she only offers a lil. TAKE HER over other speech teachers.. she grades speeches fair. u shouldn't get lower than a B
I was in the service learning class, she's a very tough grader but she does prepare you for the last speech. She also got a wonderful sense of humor. Side note take down everything she writes on the board, it will be on the test.
I LOVE MRS. HANLON! she's one of those teachers i'll never forget. she does grade tough on speeches, but it's helpful feedback. she's always willing to help you after class, and she's SO sweet and funny! i wasn't phsyched about having to take speech, but it was a great, valuable experience. take her, she's wonderful!
I took the online class. Thought it would be easier but you still have to videotape speech in front of audience and she puts really short time limits on the online quizes/tests (can't look up every answer). But if you read the book its basic stuff and not hard to pass her quizes/tests. But do the extra credit she offers (my grade went from 80to90)
HORRIBLE teacher. . .DO NOT TAKE, avoid at all costs. I have ten times the amount of work due in this class than my bf does in his speech class. She gives ridiculously, stupid assignments that have nothing to do with speech. She gave me an F on my first completed speech and basically every assigment following that. Take someone else!!!!
Great teacher! Although she grades hard on speeches, overall, Hanlon knows what she's talking about! There's a lot of busy work, so make sure you do them all! She gives plenty of extra credit! I pulled off a B in this class because of the extra credit! You will actually learn something from Hanlon if you take this class!
AMAZING! She is an incredibly wonderful professor! I took her Service-Learning Class, which was definitely a great experience, yet still a challenge. Grades very fair on speeches. Make sure you read the chapters assigned for quizzes and tests. Do ALL extra credit! SOO worth it! It keeps you from stressing at the end of the semester! Enjoy the class
Service learners beware the class is a GREAT way to start networking which has been its biggest impact for me but i cant say i enjoy the class but thats just personal. Great teacher but a very confusing website! if you take this class make sure you look EVERYWHERE things are hidden. and the advice given at the begining is to read the book...skim i
This class is not even worth not having speeches. She has quest speakers almost everyday about nonsense BS and if you don't write down their every word you wont be able to get a question right on the test, even if you came to the class and took notes.
Fairly interesting class, a lot of the information is common sense but at the same time a lot of the material in the book kind of runs together so it can be a bit confusing. Hanlon herself is very interesting and easy to listen to, most of the guest speakers were good as well. Take fairly details notes and be a good listener, you'll be fine .
GO TO CLASS. hw & tests are at home online, so that's helpful. the tests are all from what she and the many speakers SAY, not usually written down so you have to pay attention and USE YOUR CLICKER. take really good notes and you'll do good, i got a B in the class. she's a really fun lady and helpful. everyone failed first test, so she let us retak
Mrs. Hanlon is a great prof. I had so much speech anxiety before I took this class she makes you feel alot better about giving speeches. She is very nice and makes speech interesting, you can really tell she loves what she does. Go to class every day and she occasionally give extra credit. I would recommend this class.
boring class, thought it would be better than a speech class, NOT!
She's a great professor! Really loves her job and knows what she's talking about. Just follow the exact grading rucbric and you'll be fine! Fun class=)
Her voice gets annoying sometimes.
She is funny, nice, very friendly. Take this class if you don't want to take a Speech Class. It is worth it. :) Have fun.
i took her over then summer.she took attendance and her class seemed to take forever.FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS to a T or you will lose major pts and she is really big on citations.forget those during your speech and your looking at the highest a B-.Test were online and if you didnt know the material from the book you failed the test.JUST DONT TAKE HER!
Very scatter-brained and all over the place in her lectures. Her tests are on-line and the questions are crazy. Make sure to save your modules because there will be questions about them on the tests later. She is a horrible teacher, her lectures are not what a majority of the tests are about.
I wish she actually kept track of grades throughout the semester and not wait till the end to let you know if you "missed a CPS question" (maybe you would not be bombarded with so many e-mails at the end of the semester).
She doesn't keep track of CPS grades as the semester goes along. I thought I had a good grade while I was going through the semester, but ended up with an F because I "missed" clicker grades. I was never absent. I would take the other COM1000 professor if I were you.
She is very annoying and wacky, she grades speeches ridiculously although she says that her class is so easy and everyone will get A's. I cannot stand her. Dont take this class!
Took mixed mode.Prof Hanlon and TA are very engaging.Lectures are interesting.Warning: Tests and quizzes are HARD, take her advice and study. As long as you go to class, take in the lecture, and do the work/modules ur golden.
Prof takes the class WAY too seriously..its a 1000 level class and her tests are at least 100 questions...on NOTHING..she is a nice lady but her class is stupid.we had an entire class on facebook and why having 500 friends is bad..facebook has nothing to do with anything so why the heck is she teaching it?and testing us on it?i would NEVER take her
She is really anal about certain things in the course. Half the class is online. For ex, weekly you have to critique other ppls speech plan and you get graded on grading some1 else's work which was retarded. U MUST read the book to pass the exam & she grades oral speeches hard! Ended up w/ a B plus in the course.
I expected this class to be an easy A, especially because it was online. That was not true! I got a B, but with very little effort. Hanlon loves her class, and she does try to make it interesting.
Great teacher she's really fun and will keep you from getting bored. :) Compared to other comm 1001 professors, her class is VERY easy. All tests are open book (you still need to study and go to class to take notes) and modules are okay. Uses cool video clips as well. And her tests are not over 100 questions to the comment below. They're 50 questio
I haven't received a grade below a B for the past 3 semesters and I received a C+ in this class. Her tests are extremely hard for open book tests, and she puts random questions on the tests from modules she takes down when the test begins. I expected to get an easy A in this class and now my GPA is suffering because of it. Dont take Hanlon!!!
Ms Hanlon is one of the best professors I have had at UCF. Her class is extremely easy as long as you read the textbook. My roommate took another COM 1000 this past semester and was a lot harder and she had to talk in front of children which is a joke as we had to do nothing like that. Overall fairly easy class and am glad I took her.
this class was very straight foreword and easy. as long as you go to class and take notes you will have the answers to the tests.
this class was very straight foreward and easy. as long as you go to class and take notes you will have the answers to the tests.
She's really energetic and classes are interesting! Teaches different things in class than in the online components and in the book, so it's fresh info and it's important to hear. Tests are on lots of tiny details and although it isn't required, you MUST go to class to do well. Class is short and entertaining (she dances a lot) so it isn't that bad
one of the best at UCF, i'd recommend her for ANY class. She's silly & quirky, but thats just her personality. Her class was interesting and kept me entertained the whole semester. Not only do you learn, but she appreciates ALL views & opinions. Def a considerate professor & great at her job. TAKE HANLON, I wish she taught more classes.
Love Love Love her class. She made it interesting and easy to learn. She doesn't post the class notes, so it's smart to go to class and take good notes. But you would be missing out if you didn't go. She's a fun teacher and uses examples that are relevant to the times. Always watch the videos and study, and you should make at least a B+.
Very Enthusiastic and super nice. She made the subject interesting and used relevant clips. Go to class and take notes, it's not bad or dull at all, the notes will definitely help you on tests and quizzes which are open note/book. I wish all of my professors were like her.
This was a very interesting class! But u must GO TO CLASS to do well even though its not required. Took this class online and tests are EXTREMELY HARD!!! not much time allowed to take test. Save Modules will help on test! u must work HARD to pass! quizzes every week!Tests count as like 70% of grade Nice teacher though
She is hilarious and enthusiastic! Go to class because she does gimme's on all the tests that are easy if you go to class, plus class is fun and entertaining! Easy A if you read the book (easy to read and understand), and grades are mostly based off weekly T/F quizzes online and 4 online exams, all open book and note. She makes the material fun!
Best teacher I had this semster, really helpful especially to student-athletes (understands your schedule etc). Wasn't interested in the class intially but ended up being my favorite.
She is the best professor at ucf! all quizzes and tests are on your own online. class is not madatory but if you go youll do better on tests and the lectures are interesting and never boring unless she brings in a guest speaker. take this class!
Terrible professor. She doesn't even have her phd. The online tests are worthless. Nothing is learned in class either. If you have to take this class do whatever you can to avoid this incompetent professor.
I thought this would be an easy A, I underestimated the content and difficulty of the class. Make sure you go to class, even though it's not mandatory because she uses things from class on the tests and quizzes and does not provide notes outside of class. Everything is online so that's a plus. She is very funny though.
This class is harder than you think! But still an A is easily attainable as long as you actually go to class and take good notes especially on the guest speakers! Hanlon gives extra credit and lets you basically drop a test grade since she offers an optional comprehensive final! She is very helpful if you go to her office hours! She is very funny.
Not an easy, easy class but if you attend all the lectures and take notes you should be fine. Also, READ! Quizzes online every week and test every 3-4 weeks. She is a great professor though. Very passionate. I enjoyed the class just take it serious
Hanlon is the best! She is super nice, funny, and relatable to. She tries to make the class fun. 3 speeches in class, tests done online, optional final exam. I enjoyed taking her class, I wish I had studied more and practiced more for my speeches so I could have gotten an A but I'm happy with my B.
Great class! Always made it interesting. I actually enjoyed going. The subject may seem like a snoozefest, but Prof Hanlon really does make it a fun class. Not too hard if you study, just read the chapters.
Class itself wasn't that hard. Go to class, take notes on lecture, read chapters and you'll do fine on exams. Take note of videos/short clips shown in class; she likes to use those on exams. Exams are online-timed so study well beforehand. Gave us a few opportunities for extra credit. Overall very approachable and has a really funny, dorky laugh!:D
Tests are based off 80% class notes so attendance is mandatory. She is a really good speaker and provides excellent notes and examples. Only complaint is that you are required to get the textbook and read it since thats were the homework comes from. Overall very good proffessor i would definately recommend her.
The only reason i took this class over speech is because i heard it was an easy A but it wasn't. Her lectures didn't help me because she would talk about something and say we didn't have to write it down but then it would be on the test. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!!
Mrs. Hanlon really knows what she is talking about. You will need the textbook for the weekly quizzes, and occasionally on tests. Pay attention in class and take really good notes, because the online tests sometimes include small details. I would really recommend taking Mrs. Hanlon for COM 1000.
Very nice and full of energy! Class was not an Easy A but it is an Easy B. Should've earned a B+ but my final exam crashed towards the end and was just ONE point from a B+ but would not do anything. Must go to class to take notes to do well on the Exams. Surveys and quizzes were easy;Study guides for each exam were very helpful.
She is really energetic and full of life, and makes class interesting. This is the easiest class I have ever taken at UCF. There is no way you can not get an A. Just make sure you take notes in class because that is where most of the test info comes from. Also all the work is online which is a plus, and there are many opportunities for extra credit.
Mrs. Hanlon is an awesome professor! She is really into what she teaches and she's so helpful. Make sure for the online quizes that you read the book. The exams are also online and you can use your notes, It's almost impossible to fail!
She is extremely nice and full of energy! You can tell that she tries to keep the class interesting. She will ALWAYS give you the benefit of the doubt on your speech if she can see that you tried. The exams are online and really easy if you read the chapters that she tells you to. There is no reason to not get an A in this class.
Overall easy class. Make sure you read or at least look over the chapters before you take the quizzes. You only get 15 minutes for 10 questions. For tests, definitely review quizzes and have book with you. Again though, you only have an hour for 50 questions so using the book is tough. BUY THE CUSTOM BOOK!!! It's expensive but you need that one!
Recommend for those who are nervous speakers at first. She's very caring and encouraging. The tests are easy and you need to go to class everyday, otherwise she deducts points; plus some material on the tests are found in class discussions.
Very funny during class, always has a personal story to relate to the topic. Quizzes are pretty easy, tests are pretty hard. She's easy to talk to though. I reccommend this teacher for sure.
If you're an upperclassman, you won't find her peppy quirky attitude appealing. She's nice but it's too much. Class was easy I was just completely uninterested. Go to class and take notes and you'll have exams in the bag. Quizzes are out of the book. Drops lowest quiz and exam and gives loads of extra credit.
Mrs. Hanlon is the BEST! She loves teaching, and she's an excellent professor. She's very helpful. Gives a lot of extra credit. Tests are straight out of book and notes. Go to class, take notes, and you're good to go. Love it! I'd take it again if I could.
Weekly Quizzes, Tests are only on lectures. majority of grade. Worst exam is dropped and if thats your final then thats dropped. She's a good professor overall. Never attended class and ended with a B. Everything is online.
Her class was only quizzes and test, all on web-course. Attendance is mandatory for this class. You literally need to write down everything that she says in lectures. THEY WILL BE ON THE TEST. quizzes are on on chapters in the book and Test is lecture based. If you do and study the study guide your sure to pass. She also drops a lot of grades =)
My fav. professor of my freshman year hands down! Very helpful and exceptionally approachable. Even if you don't consider yourself a public speaker prof. Hanlon does her best to ensure you don't feel self-conscious. You choose your own speech day. Exams are online, multiple-choice, AND open-book. If you fail this class, it truly is your own fault.
You have to attend class because the exams are based off of the lectures but she makes class so fun and interesting that I actually loved going! by far my favorite professor. Tests and quizzes are all online and very easy as long as you read the book and pay attention in class!
She's really upbeat and peppy so if you're not into that forget her. No class on exam days, quizzes and exams all online usually open for 4-6 days. Quizzes are T or F and strictly based on the book. Exams are multiple choice and based mostly on lectures, and videos. if you want an "A" go to class everyday and read the chapters and it's a breeze.
Amazing teacher! Cares for students! Tests aren't too hard, only place I needed the book for. Speeches are very l aid out. She makes you feel comfortable speaking!!! DONT WORRY! She is crazy awesome hyper and funny. Had her for honors so, small class. She knows her stuff, powerpoints aren't too useful, notes from them are. I LOVED HER!! TAKE HER!!
Honors class, 20 students, little bit of random extra credit, 3 main speeches, 4/5 tests, she drops lowest test (or if you have an A before final, don't have to take it), her powerpoints are poor, take notes from them, I only used book for tests, she makes you feel VERY COMFORTABLE FOR SPEECHES. She is crazy, hyper, and hilarious. I loved her!
She is the most amazing teacher ever! You will have to take quizzes online every week so if you read the chapter you will always get As. Her tests are based on what you learned in class so as long as you attend the class you should be fine. She doesn't make the class boring and she has a lot of funny stories to tell the class. She's A++ teacher
Professor Hanlon is fantastic. Anxieties about public speaking? Forget 'em. She has a special way of making you comfortable and confident about delivering a speech-- even if it's your first time. Textbook is required for online tests (mostly, they do ask questions about her lectures). Attendance is mandatory but I recommend going, not a bore!
Dr. Hanlon is super nice and hilarious! She will go out of her way to help you and talk to you about speech ideas. She does talk really fast and go on tangents so if you have trouble with paying attention you'll have to work to stay focused.
She is the BEST, her lectures are so entertaining that you actually want to go to class. The chapters are easy to read. Quizzes based on the book, exams based on lectures and book. Such a sweet woman. I took this class fall 2013 and I used the 3rd edition. Still got an A.
This class is way harder than it has to be. As a biomed major, with really hard classes, this ended up being my hardest class because instead of teaching of what's in the book, she makes you pay attention to her opinion and discussions. No, it's a Gen Ed. Relax.
Great professor! She makes class interesting and makes a lot of jokes! Her quizzes are online and the you'll need the book to take them. Class is somewhat mandatory because she goes over a lot of stuff that will be on the finals that is not in the book. I would take her again!
I thoroughly enjoyed taking Honors Fundamentals of Oral Communication with Dr. Hanlon. She's one of the nicest professors I've ever had, and her class was a breeze. She explains things well, has easy (and online!) exams, and goes out of her way to prevent speech assignments from ever being stressful. I would highly recommend her!
Dr Hanlon is an awesome Professor! She is very sweet and her class is very interesting. She is very clear on assignments and she is willing to work with you. I would definitely recommend her taking her class.
Wonderful professor! Tests are simple if you go to class and take notes. She only uses a couple sides per class, but she talks a lot, and what she says in class is on the test. Her tests are online. Quizzes on every chapter in the book also online. She is the best! Take this class!
Dr. Hanlon has been the best professor I've had at UCF. Her class is super easy and she makes lectures something you would look forward to.
Dr. Hanlon is an amazing teacher who cares a lot about her students. The quizzes were all from the chapters, and easy. The tests were lecture-based with a few "extra-credit" questions regarding attendance, such as: What activity was done in class to demonstrate blah? Dr. Hanlon explains, teaches, and helps her students very well. Take her class!!
Dr. Hanlon is awesome! Best teacher I had. Quizzes and tests are online. Research participation are good, it's almost like an extra 30 points with no effort. Her lectures are fun. She's funny and clear. Take her!! Definitely recommended.
Dr. Hanlon is the bomb! She is so passionate about her students and what she teaches. The class is probably the easiest at UCF. She even lets you use notes on quizzes and tests. I would recommend her to anyone. Plus everything you're learning is actually relevant with society, communication, relationships, advertising, and social media.
Dr. Hanlon is the type of professor you don't mind waking up at 8 am to go to a lecture for. She tries her hardest to make sure she keeps her auditorium classes alert and focused. Very helpful, and quizzes every week (true or false) and an easy 'A' on the test if you do the online review. Overall an amazing professor.
Dr. Hanlon is the nicest lady and a great teacher. I loved having her for intro to com, she made what would have been a boring gen ed into a really fun experience. Just take notes and skim the book. Quiz once a week, no homework. Quizzes and exams are online, open notesbook, AND multiple choice. Easy A
Christine Hanlon is by far my favorite professor at UCF. She is so nice and her lectures are funny and cheesy. There is a quiz almost every week on one chapter in the book, 10 questions TF so you need the book! But they are super easy along with the 3-4 tests that are based on the lectures. So easy to get an A or high B!
Great person and always willing to help, despite massive class sizes. She is very enthusiastic about her class, and I loved it. Very easy if you spend 10 minutes mapping out the chapters for the (open book quizzes and tests) and go to class. 60% of tests are just examples she talks about in class at least! Wish I could take this professor again.
There was a quiz every week and if there was no quiz it was a test based on the previous quizzes. There is a lot of reading (the textbook and several PDFs) and it is necessary to pass the quizzes and tests because there is no lecture. There are 5 tests (4 Exams and Final) so if you have the grade you want you don't have to take the final.
Tests and quizes are all online. Quizes are all from the textbook, and tests are a mix of textbook and her lecturesvideos she shows during lecturesspecific examples she'll give. Funny and really nice, she's willing to help out with almost anything, really understanding. Offers extra credit, and research participation is mandatory, but easy.
Great teacher her lectures are amazing!! Everything she says in class will be on the test , from the videos to the curse words she says.
Stellar professor. I'm sad I can't take her again! She's very detailed in feedback and understanding, but don't confuse that for easy. If you slack, you won't pass!
Her style of teaching is talk talk and a couple of powerpoints, you expect the test to be easy, Nope you got it all wrong its 60% of what she says in class if you dont write literally everything she says you wont do well. And be prepared to read Hundreds of pages of worthless junk you will never use. This teacher takes com too seriously, I hated it
Absolutely amazing! She is incredibly intelligent and easy to listen to. Presents information in a memorable way and is obviously interested in her subject matter which makes a world of difference. Overall excellent professor.
Great speech professor! Makes you comfortable giving speeches and is super positive. Her goal is for everyone to make an A.
Hanlon was a really great teacher. She gave clear expectations which were easy to follow. As long as you do the homework and go to class you should pass. She did put things specifically from the lectures in the tests so take notes during class.
This professor makes this class unnecessarily difficult. There's a lot of reading that you have to do in order to do well on the tests and the questions are extremely specific. This class is supposed to be really easy, but you have to actually work for an A if you take her.
I took the honors version and if you're not afraid to speak in front of 15-40 people this class is a breeze. You should show up because her test material is all from class lectures and the book. I skipped a lot and never bought the textbook and still got an A by doing her reviews and going to her office hours to check my answers.
Show up to class and write down everything she discusses, even if she is sharing a personal story or it seems like she's just off on a tangent. It will most likely show up in a quiz or test. Quiz about every week and about 4 tests, all online. No homework except for one or two extra credit assignments.
pretty easy, just a lot of vocab and web course tests. you'll want her to be your mom.
Love this professor! She's so enthusiastic and you can tell she loves her job. Class lectures are interesting because she incorporates many stories and video clips as examples to go along with her presentation. Overall I would definitely take her again. She's amazing and the class is an easy A
I LOVED this class, it's so interesting and Dr. Hanlon is the best. There's a lot to read but it's noting too overwhelming and all interesting news articles, documentaries and short textbook chapters. She really just wants you to understand the concepts and ideas. This class opened my eyes on gender issues completely. Textbook is affordable, too.
COM1000 with her is pretty much just a facade for a gender studies class.
Her class was pretty easy. The lectures are interesting. She tells stories that relate back to the concepts we're talking about. Attendance is mandatory because what she says in the lecture will be on the tests. There are weekly quizzes that pertain to the readings that week-really easy. Every test and quiz is online. I would highly recommend!
TAKE HER! She is so sweet and humble. I'm not a comm. major, but she inspired me to think about switching. She shares many examples and keeps the class engaged. I looked forward to her class. It is a lot of work, weekly quizzes and 4 tests, but it's do-able. Grading was fair and extra credit opportunities there. DON'T NEED TO BUY A TEXTBOOK!
Dr. Hanlon is such a smart, sweet, and aware professor. I love going to this class because Dr. Hanlon, as a professor of Communication, knows how to give a great, informative and ENTERTAINING lecture that you will laugh and learn from. With communication basics, Dr. Hanlon also discusses social bias and privileges, which is incredibly stimulating.
Shes a phenomenal teacher who cares about her students and the topics she covers. Very active in the womens community and genuinely wants you to succeed. There are a couple of projects but theyre actually really interesting, and if you put in the time and effort which isn't a TON youll do great. readings and quizzes are very informative & easy. 3
I absolutely love Dr. Hanlon. She is so entertaining and makes the lectures fun to go to. She opened my eyes to so many social issues I wasn't aware of before and allowed me to know more about the world around me. There isn't a text book which is nice, but you do have to do a bit of reading (its not too bad). She gives a lot of extra credit.
She's such a sweet heart, take her! Her class is interesting and she loves her students. You should really show up to class and take notes because you can use the notes on your tests (all online)
Dr. Hanlon's class was such an excellent class for my first semester at UCF. She was always available during office hours and via email for any help, but help was rarely needed because she was very clear on the requirements of the class from the start. Tests are minimal (2) and the textbook is just a packet a week, 25 pages max, with no assignment
Best class I took this semester! She makes lectures so interesting. All tests and quizzes are online and open notes. Make sure to take good notes in class and during quiz readings (time-consuming but worth it). Do really well on the first 4 tests and you won't have to take the final! If you want an easy A just go to class and take notes.
I loved COM 1000 with Professor Hanlon! She gives plenty of extra credit, the lectures are actually interesting, and she is a very enthusiastic professor. I never felt forced to go to class, I wanted to! You can expect lots of readings- every week there is reading Quiz that's 5 questions long based on 30 some pages of reading.
Hanlon is overall a really good professor. The quizes she gives throughout the semester are pretty easy if you actually do the readings. It is VERY important you go to class because she does not provide any slides she shows in class. Pretty easy class if you do your homework and research participation.
She is so passionate about her work. You don't need to buy a textbook, or go to class every single time but you will want to because she is hilarious and makes the subject and the class so interesting. She gives you modules online and extra credit near the end of the semester. She gives you all the material necessary to get an A.
As entertaining as she is its really hard to learn in her class when 15 minutes into an actual lecture she goes on about how much priveledge we have, or how chairs are a form of discrimination, and why we should hold seminars on feminist ideals. Although she has every right to hold these ideas I wish she would actually teach because she's good one
If you're planning on skipping even one class and you don't have someone to get notes from, don't take this class. Hanlon will play videos to go along with her lectures and if you don't know what exact video or example went with a certain concept, you're not going to do well on the tests. Reading quizzes are easy, just tedious, take notes, trust me
Her lectures often include related personal stories and sometimes clips from movies that illustrate what she's talking about, and I genuinely enjoyed this class. She really cares about her students and makes every effort to make sure you have every possible opportunity to pass, and the workload is very small. She's awesome!
One of the best teachers I've taken at UCF, genuinely interesting, was never a chore going to class, doesn't make it hard to succeed in her class, would highly recommend
Professor Hanlon is the BEST!!! You can tell she really really cares about you passing and about the material she's teaching. I love having a professor who is respectful of her students. Lots of movie clips! Tests/weekly quizzes are easy! Don't buy the book, go to the library ASAP and take pics of needed chapters. You don't use the whole book!
I would go to every lecture possible because her tests are based off of her lectures (which aren't posted online). This class is easy if you put in time and effort.
Dr. Hanlon is super enthusiastic and her lectures were always interesting. Take good notes and go to every class bc she doesn't post powerpoints online. Her tests kinda suck. Get 100's on all the online quizzes, that'll save your grade if you don't do great on the tests.
The class in itself is very hard to fail, but Dr. Hanlon made it enjoyable. I learned a lot of interesting stuff that I didn't ever think I needed to know. Highly recommend her!
If you're expecting an easy Communications class that you do with google and quizlet you're wrong. The exams are heavily based on lectures and notes so go to class. If you do take notes and read the book you'll get an A for sure. You don't have to buy the textbook.
Doesn't actually teach COM1000. Instead, take this class if you want to learn about Gender Studies and Tumblr-bred Feminism first-hand
Probably the most energetic professor I've had here at UCF, but the class is basically gender studies and LGBTQ+ stuff which is very off topic from what the class is supposed to be about. Had to take a BuzzFeed test to find out how "privileged" we are. One lecture consisted of a single slide with six words for 50min. This is the norm in the class.
Pretty easy class for the most part. Lots of interesting subject matter. Dr. Hanlon does lean towards feminist and LGBT+ topics, but it all makes sense with course material. Make sure you attend class regularly, that's a good chunk of exam information. Be weary of who you pick for Public speaking project partners. Do research participation ASAP
Lots of extra credit and super nice! She really cares and makes it easy to understand and it's hard to fail this class. All tests, quizzes, and even the final exam are taken online. Definitely recommend her and the class is very interesting too! The textbook is required for quizzes but you don't have to buy it.
Lectures consist of a short powerpoint with 4-5 slides. She lectures the whole duration of the class which is extremely boring. All quizzes and tests are online but the tests are difficult because she asks questions straight from her lectures and expects you to remember the littlest details. Group project at the end. Lots of EC chances.
This was a great class and I really learned a lot from Dr. Hanlon. You have a quiz at the end of every module, but you will do good on them if you read the module material. She has the online course set up beautifully and it's very easy to navigate. I definitely feel more confident going into my speech class next semester thanks to this class.
I loved Dr. Hanlon. I like lectures, and she's really good about explaining materials. If you want a class where you can zone out every now and then, this probably isn't for you.
Great Class, great professor. Definately get the book, and read all the material she puts up in the module and you will be fine. This has been the easiest course I've taken. She gives 4 online exams, open notes 50 questions with 85 mins. Don't stress, I always have about a half hour left after looking up and double checking each question.
Dr. Hanlon is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Her lectures are super interesting. The beginning of the course was pretty slow, but as the semester progressed I began to like her more and more. There are weekly online quizzes based on the readings. All of her tests (and the final) are online. I definitely would take her class again.
Super nice and really cares about whether you pass or not. In the honors section of this course, you have to give multiple speeches, but they're not that bad and she grades fairly. You also have to participate in service learning for honors, but it's only 15 hours.
Dr. Hanlon is a really sweet lady. Really cares about her students, wants everyone to get an A and will make sure you do (just put in effort). She's an easy grader and will tell you what you need to improve on. Didn't really use the textbook or learn text material in class. Only needed the textbook during the two exams (open notes and taken online)
Professor Hanlon is a cool professor, she makes lectures super interesting and fun and cares about her students. The only two things were tests and grading. No study guides, tests are open book but you don't have enough time to look up questions since you aren't made aware of what to study. Also grading section was super complicated.
She tried to push an agenda in a lot of the classes, which bothered me a bit. Other than that, this will be one of the easiest classes you will take. There is lots of extra credit given throughout the semester. Only thing you will have trouble with is the exams if you don't read the book cover to cover. Easiest class I took this semester.
Went to class the first two weeks then never went back and I did pretty good for never going to class. There's an online quiz every week (most of the answers are on quizlet). The tests were also online, however, the questions were hard to find online and involved in-class references! DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! Guaranteed an A if you go to class.
Professor Hanlon was an absolute joy to be around. She brings this fun energy to class and lectures are all the more interesting with the way she explains things! This class is an easy pass if you go to her lectures and take notes- reason being her exams are lecture heavy. The weekly Wednesday quizzes are typically textbook based T/F questions.
The time flies in her class because she makes the info so interesting and applicable to your life. Dr. Hanlon is so passionate and will do anything for her students. She is a great person and very understanding! Only have online exams and quizzes. Just attend lecture and read the textbook. Take her class! She is a one of a kind professor!!
You can google quiz answers, but complicated grading. You have to attend campus activities and all the extremely liberal talks about privilege, oppression and black history are worth almost double the points of the talks about persuasive speech and presentations. Its a shame this is required because its a massive waste of time and money.
I LOVE Dr. Hanlon so much! She is so funny and enjoys teaching this class. There is one quiz due every Wednesday and 4 tests to be taken. Do your campus participation, there are so many opportunities so there shouldn't be a reason as to why you don't get a 100% in that category. If you need help with anything, she is so caring towards her students!
Hanlon is an amazing professor and actually wants her students to succeed in and out of her class. The only complaint is that her tests were pretty difficult. Other than that it was a great class!
The professor gave more work than I feel should have been assigned for a 1000 level course. It was easily my most time consuming class this semester, and I was taking Physics 2. Most modules had a textbook chapter (or two) along with 20+ pages of pdf's to read. Some weeks had two modules to complete. Take her if you like the subject, else avoid.
DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU HAVE OTHER CHOICES. Her tests and quizzes are based on super long readings along with online modules with long videos. She barely gave any useful information during her lectures but you would have random questions about specific things she said in class on the tests. Shes nice and all but made the class too difficult.
15 Quizzes 10 questions each all fairly hard. 4 exams plus one final. All pretty hard. Nothing on Quizlet. Take David Young instead, he is much easier.
Such a sweet and caring person. Great teacher who cares about her students and respects those who try in her class. GO TO CLASS! Her slides aren't available online and would be indecipherable if she posted them anyway. Would recommend.
Hanlon is such an amazing professor. She clearly cares for her students and her lectures are interesting. I enjoyed going to class. She cancels class a lot so beware. The class is harder than it needs to be but you will likely enjoy it.
Hanlon is such a nice professor. She really does care about her students and attempts to make a speech class as not stressful as possible, and she does so pretty effectively. Plus, she helps make public speeches into a very do-able thing. You will be doing service-learning, so bear that in mind.
HIGHLY recommend. It's a 1000 level class and she understands that. She does NOT make you show up to class and all the grades are online, so its easy to pass. When I do go to class, she is super helpful, VERY sweet and nice, great teacher and a good person. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! 11/10
She is a interesting lecturer. She uses different techniques to keep you engaged. I would recommend taking this class. Some classes will be online and the exams will include random facts from her lectures so you have to attend.
Dr. Hanlon really cares about students. She wants EVERYONE to get an A, and will email you personally and tell you what to do to raise your grade. She's a lenient grader; as long as you do the assignments, you'll get an A. She's understanding about service-learning (under 15hrs is ok). No harsh feedback on speeches either! Don't buy textbook.
AVOID!! The class just ended for the semester & the average grade for the whole class was a B- (530pts out of 650 pts). This is insane for a 1000 level GenEd intro to comm class. Not an easy A professor for what should be an easy A. Expect loads of reading and notetaking. No Quizlets. Lectures contain small bits of info that pop up on tests/quizzes
The worst professor I've maybe ever had. Has blank power point slides so you actually have to listen to her lectures, which would be fine if 75% of her lectures weren't irrelevant tangents and rants about things unrelated to the course that never show up on the exam. Honestly take whichever other professor you can for this course.
Professor hanlon is very knowledgable, pay attention to lectures and take notes. Weekly quizzes
Dr. Hanlon is very knowledgeable in her field and really cares about the success of her students.
Threw ProcotorHub exams on us out of nowhere 2 days before our exam3. Do not use GroupMe. Threatens expulsion for even trying to coordinate group exam taking, so do not try. Class average on quizzes and tests 70-77 with 30-65 pages per 10 question reading quiz. V disappointed in how she punished every student, could have been handled much better
I didn't purchase the textbook. I used her module notes which prepared me for the quizzes and exams.
Nice enough, but this class should be the easiest class offered at UCF. It isn't, makes tests and quizzes immensely more specific and intensive then required for a class like this. 0/10 do not recommend
For what should be a fairly easy class, this professor makes it AGONIZINGLY difficult. Segment tests contain random, tiny pieces of information from lectures, so you're screwed if you don't go to lectures. Tons of pages of reading for online quizzes, and tons of online module reading. It's all TEDIOUS. Absolutely AVOID this professor at all costs.
Fantastic speaker, caring, knowledgable. I really enjoyed her lectures (I learned a lot!) they're not "mandatory" but all quizzes/tests are based on lectures so YOU NEED TO GO TO LECTURES & take notes! Only dislike: all 4 tests are VERY LONG (50 Q's) and some Q's are worded oddly/extremely specific so basically: time-consuming but not "difficult."
This class is extremely hard.
Dr. Hanlon is an awesome professor. The class is not difficult at all. You are allowed to use all notes on tests and quizzes. Anyone who says this class is difficult was expecting an "A" to be handed to them. Yes its an easy class, but you have to put in some work.
dr. hanlon seems like a genuinely caring professor, so her in person class might be better, but this online class was one of the hardest i've taken at ucf. the information for the exams was extremely tedious and tiny bits of information pulled out of movies and notes and nothing to do with actual content. TAKE WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!
Escape while you can. Class is way too hard online for no reason.
For a 1000 level class, this class was very difficult. I received better grades in my 3000 level classes. Unless you're super into communication or it's your major do yourself a favor and just take another professors class
I am a senior, biomed major w a 3.9 GPA. I took orgo2 and physics2 this sem, so I took this class as a buffer. LOL, it was the opposite of a buffer. Super detailed exams and quizzes, I don't, "expect my grades to be handed to me" (like someone below said), but this is supposed to be an easy class and it was not. Take a different prof if possible
Dr. Hanlon is a very nice person and an interesting lecturer to listen to. However, there was a ridiculous amount of reading to do for this class and the tests/quizzes were extremely specific and vague considering this is just a 1000 level, GEP course.
Dr. Hanlon was an amazing professor. She's hilarious and makes her expectations clear. She's caring and genuine and easy to talk to. As long as you do what she assigns, you'll get an A for sure.
Christine is a nice person and all but her lectures are really tough to sort out whats important. She has like 5 anecdotes in a class and I personally did not like her teaching style. I wouldnt waste my time. If you wanna actually learn about communications and some anecdotes of a professor you will probably never see again, take the class.
Professor Hanlon as a whole is a kind and caring professor. However, this was by far the most difficult class I have taken at UCF. This is NOT - and I repeat - NOT an easy class. Be ready to read, watch videos, take notes , study and devote at least 10-12 hours a week into this class.
Dr. Hanlon is such a great professor! Would take her again but I don't need another communications course. She is very inclusive and understanding. Only scary part of the course is the speech but there is an option to record it because she understands people have public speaking anxiety. If you pay attention and read the material it's not too hard.
Dr. Hanlon is a great Professor, she clearly cares for her students and tries to keep lectures interesting. Does participation grades everyday in class, and assigns a lot of online homework but the class isnt challenging at all. Lets you use notes for all quizzes and exams- just take really detailed ones
Rambles in lectures, but overall she's funny and it makes the class worth it. Her class is easy going but requires a iClickers. Uses ProctorHub, but has open notes for quizzes and exams. Drops lowest quiz grade and lowest exam grade. Although I feel like I didn't learn anything while taking the class, looking back I learned a lot. Worth it!
The best professor I've had at UCF. Genuinely cares about her students and it shows. Speech can be intimidating but she makes it as professional and serious, while still being comfortable and not intimidating as possible.
uses iClicker for attendance and participation but allows a few missed classes. super easy grader. 1 quiz per week but you can look up almost all answers for an easy A. one presentation but it's webcam that you submit and she's the only one who looks at it. allows one dropped quiz and test grade
I took this class over the summer, and it was pretty easy. Just make sure you actually pay attention and take decent notes during lecture because her tests are lecture based. The tests were online, but don't expect to find the answers online because her test questions are usually based off of examples given in class. Overall, Dr. Hanlon was good.
Dr. Hanlon is one of the best professors I've encountered at UCF. She is kind & helpful to her students and it's very clear that she genuinely cares. There's a lot of reading but she makes it easy and she has been teaching at UCF for over 20 years so she knows her criteria very well and you can tell she works hard to make class more interesting.
Uses iclicker for participation points, make sure to show up to class. Be prepared for her to push her own agenda on you throughout the semester!! Make sure you stay on top of the reading and online modules. She is a very caring teacher and anytime there is some sort of "trigger" mentioned she always warns you and provides info for resources.
Not easy class, all tests are proctored and time limit isnt enough time
Very sweet and caring professor. Sometimes a bit preachy during lectures, but overall a great speaker and can be funny. Only real downside is the proctored tests which give me anxiety and are harder than one would expect for a class like this. Open notes, but always manages to include the one thing I did not take notes on lol
Not a bad prof. She really wants everyone to do well and allows open-book for ALL assignments, but like someone said she can get preachy. Very PC. But nice lady. Makes it very obvious she cares about her students and their well-being. Presents interesting information and the book is pretty densely packed. Take her if you're gonna take a COM course.
Way too much reading for a 1000 level class. Half the test questions werent even based on actual course information but were random things said in class or little parts of the reading. I didnt buy the textbook and managed to do decent but I would def take another professor. Tests are proctored but can use notes but quizlet doesnt help.
To the people here that are giving her bad ratings--it's 100% on them, not Dr. Hanlon lol. This class is literally stress free. You're allowed to use notes, textbook, etc. on every quiz, test and final exam (which are all done online). It's easy to maintain an A. She has a lot of energy and is pretty lenient overall.
Dr. Hanlon was great. She was very positive and inspirational; always supportive of her students. She was very kind and more than willing to serve as a reference for students in the future or write up a letter of recommendation. She is an easy grader with clear criteria for assignments.
Great professor! Uses service learning in her course so you are placed with a non-profit organization and your speeches are about your experience. The opportunities in this class actually got me and some of my friends scholarships from winning an award at a showcase Dr. H gave a free 100% for going to.
Dr. Hanlon was incredible. She is one of THE MOST understanding professors yet. If you have a problem, she will help you get through it: speech issues, service learning organization issues etc. She encourages you to pursue opportunities outside of class, like the SL Showcase. Loved her so much I'm currently a speech coach this semester with her!
Dr. Hanlon was great for COM1000. She always integrated funny stories into her lectures to keep everyone engaged. Make sure you attend her lectures, because she gives content that isnt provided on webcourses. I took her over the summer so all exams were open note and online.
Class way too hard for GEP. Would encourage to take another professor.
Dr. Hanlon was a good teacher, she cares about her students BUT holy Jesus, there was so much reading and so many quizzes and tests, so much to do for a 1000 class. Extremely annoying.
You lowkey need to try in this class which is annoying for a 1000s level class. Tests and quizzes are annoyingly specific (what does this character in this random clip shown in class say). Overall, Hanlon really cares about her students and is probably one of the nicest professors at UCF, but her class is harder than it should be.
Dr. Hanlon is an amazing professor whose care for each and every one of her students shines through everything she does. Ample feedback on how to speak more confidently, even for the shyest student. This class is a really great opportunity for anyone looking to be connected to a local non-profit or organization. Thanks Dr. H!
This was my first class at UCF, so I was pretty nervous (especially with COVID making things much worse), but Mrs. Hanlon's a super nice professor. Took her over the summer, there are a lot of quizzes and like 5 exams (all open notes), but if you read and take notes you'll be fine. Super understanding, and, overall, I'd love to take her again!
Dr. Hanlon is very kind to students and really cares about them and wants them to succeed. The course isn't too hard as long as you put in the effort and complete the assignments. -
All quizzes are true and false, make sure to read the textbook, only gives an hour for 50 question tests, and its a lot of work for a basic introduction class
The class itself is pretty interesting, and Dr. Hanlon is super nice, but also very picky when it comes to grading. Lots of extra credit opportunities, but make sure to study for tests. Super detailed.
She is a caring professor but the class has a heavy workload for an introductions class. There are 4 true or false quizzes a week and then a test on those four quizzes. The tests are 50 questions multiple choice and you have 60 minutes, you must study! She gives a good amount of extra credit but no actual assignments besides quizzes and tests.
Dr. Hanlon is one of the nicest teachers Ive ever had, she gives a 10 question T/F quiz every Thursday, pretty simple criteria, just pay attention. Overall really fun class
This professor made me stress a lot because she would sometimes give you little excerpts that would have like one question on the exam but out of the blue she started making the quizzes based on that. So you would study all these concepts and meanings that would be imbedded in the modules and then she wouldn't quiz you on them.
On the quizzes, she'll make questions harder than it needs to be. She'll switch around a few words and make them tricky. This is an introductory class and she's making it harder than it should be. If there are other professors that you can choose from please choose them because this is not a fun class.
Dr. Hanlon was amazing. She was one of my first professors at UCF. I took her class online over the summer- it's definitely challenging. However, she allows you to use notes on tests and quizzes. You'll need the book. She offers a few opportunities for extra credit aswell. She communicates well with students and wants to see you succeed.
Her grading format is very weird. Instead of having just an overall grade you as the student have to gather up all the points from everything and total them up after each segment. Don't take this professor ! I just had her for fall and I'm almost done but she makes it very hard for an introductory class. Makes quizzes really tricky for no reason.
Such a nice professor. You have to do readings and take notes for the exams/quizzes. They are open notes and easy as long as you've read the chapters ahead of time. Doesn't require a lot of effort but can be time consuming. Overall an easy class!
This professor makes the exams really detailed and specific but only gives you like 50 minutes for 40 questions which s a little stressful because some questions will be really specific so you have to go look for it and that can take time. A lot of the time she'll make you read around 30 pages for a quiz but then none of it is on the quiz.
I loved this class so much! Notes and textbook were allowed during all quizzes/exams. As long as you take detailed notes and focus on the chapter, it is an easy A. quizzes every 2 chapters, 4 segment exams, 1 final, and 1 speech assignment. Dr. Hanlon is great and wants all of her students to succeed. Thank you Dr. Hanlon!
This professor is very rude to students while emailing. Shell give you the shortest response that most of the time wont help you and the way she responds is very passive aggressive. She also makes this class harder and a lot more work than it actually needs to be. Its an introductory class for god sakes. Her grading system is also very weird.
I loved Hanlon! Her lectures were really interesting and she is so friendly/easy to reach out to. If you take the time to respect her she will be lenient about late assignments.
Greatest professor I've had thus far at the university. Shes always available after class and really cares about you succeeding. I never expected to learn so much from one class. Definitely take her if you can.
For a beginner class this professor made the content very challenging and difficult to understand. There was no clear layout or outline to the class notes and it consisted or random paragraphs, video clips, and Many of her stories. The test questions were almost impossible and it made it hard to get a good grade. Questions were completely random.
Dr. Hanlon was hands down one of my favorite teachers during freshman year. I had an incident where I couldn't get an exam in on time and I emailed her to explain what happened and she kindly let me retake the exam for full credit. Genuinely the nicest and most understanding teacher I've ever had.
online class. super easy. weekly quizzes and a few discussions and movies. no exams. Do the reading and it's an easy A.
Lots of readings to do. Test are heavy make sure you actually read the articles/passages she assigns you. You will see it on the the test. Speaking of test its difficult the wording of the questions is weird... if you want to pass with an A meet with her during office hours . Quizlet doesn't help much
The class is overall pretty easy. Quizzes every week, 4 exams with the lowest one dropped, and a final. The questions are not on quizlet so you do have to find everything through the book and modules. The online test and quizzes are also proctored. The questions are easy to find and professor provided so much information so it is not hard to do.
(Fall 2019) This class is quite easy. The quizzes and tests are open book, although it can be a bit tedious searching through the textbook (and module slides) to find the right answer. Lectures were mildly engaging (better than boring) and she has a great personality when teaching!
Hanlon lays out her coursework very neatly and organized. Super easy to follow. You can tell she is passionate about the subject she teaches. She gives lots of real world examples for communication terms that make it easier for me to learn. If you have any concerns she is more than happy to help, she's easy to talk to.
Sweet lady but not the prof you want for an intro class. Found her to be horribly condescending in emails, her grading system is extremely confusing (you'll find out your grade in segments), her quizzes consist of random questions regarding material you didn't learn about, and the modules are just stories about herself and won't help you at all...
I don't know why this professor has so many good rates. For an introduction class, she makes it very hard for students to pass. Her niceness feels like rubbing suncream on an open wound because the tests are so difficult they make the class a time of suffering! I took this for a GEP requirement, but I wish I hadn't. Very condescending, bad grading.
You will spend more time on this class than the majority of your core classes. For a 1000 level class, the rigor was not worth it and I found myself stressing over this class instead of my calculus class. The tests are open note, but the notes you need to take in order to do good take an immense amount of time. Would not recommend.
TAKE HER!! Professory Hanlon is an amazing teacher, I'm not sure why the most recent reviews are so harsh. If you can answer the review q's after ever module w confidence, you'll pass for sure. Exams are an easy A, based on the review q's. She cares so much for her students and their mental health. Easy grader for the video assignment too! 1000/10
pretty hard "intro class". had to spend more time on this than my other higher level courses... the prof is nice and inclusive but the work is A LOT. i wouldnt reccomend the class but the prof is alright herself. just way too much studying and note taking. also the questions and wording of them are nasty specific so GL lol
lots of quizzes and reading textbook and watching videos. class itself is pretty mediocre, the professor tries to be helpful. The questions on the quizzes are janky tho/worded horribly so they're confusing to know the answer. not a class i would take again but I needed it for credit.
Great class but very time consuming. Lots of videos and reading in the modules. About 4hr a week is spent on this class, but it's worth it.
This class was freakishly hard. They way its graded is hard to get an A, and good luck spending 2 hours studying for each weekly quiz. The answers to the quiz are based on her webcourses notes and on the book (cant use quizlet). I got 90s on all the quizzes and one C and I couldnt get back to an A in the class. Take the other professors.
WAY too much work for intro class pls don't take. Information could be taught in such a concise & better way considering its basic stuff rather than watching pointless vids and 40 pg readings in 2x a week modules. She makes it so much harder that it takes away from the benefits of the course. Nice professor, but would've rather taken someone else.
super sweet woman- she truly cares about her students. But she assigns wayyyy too much homework for an intro level class, I would drown in homework every week. Be very detailed with all the notes you take, the exams ask very detailed questions.
I took this course online so I didn't get much interaction with her, but a decent bit of homework. Had to read 2 modules every week with videos, only 1 quiz a week/10 questions. 4 total segment exams which weren't too bad. Need to take a lot of notes because not much time to go back in the modules during the quizzes. Lotta work 4 a 1000 class tho
Pros: straightforward; very nice lady; lots of opportunities to raise ur grade; open-notes for everything. Cons: 24 modules w/ lots of reading and videos (advice: take notes on EVERYTHING, exams are on the little details); most time-consuming class compared to my higher level ones; submit work twice a week. Overall: time-consuming but easy.
You can tell Dr. Hanlon is passionate about the content. Definitely take her if you're a com major, you'll learn a lot. For everyone else - if this class is just for a GEP - this class has way too much busy work for an intro class. Test questions are specific so take notes on EVERYTHING. Few lectures, but hours of reading & note-taking a week.
hated this prof- class was a gen req, she made it very difficult
Feels like a high school literature class where the teacher tests and quizzes you on irrelevant details and tries to trick you. Unnecessary level of difficulty for a 1000 level course.
Too much work for intro class. Clearly doesn't know that intro class shouldn't be more than an hour a day. Syllabus states that it requires multiple hours of study a day. Pointless videos, 30+ pages of reading in textbook and 5+ articles every module. Grade's based on exams based on pointless facts. Good luck trying to get an A with a C on 1 exam.
I learned more in this class than any class taken so far (I'm graduating next semester). Lots of material to absorb, however keeping up with the content was highly relevant and current. She makes great efforts to keep you on track; you just need to reach out to her if you're struggling.
Not a hard class at all. Assignments very frequently for such a low level class.
Like most of the other reviews stated the class isn't too difficult but it is a lot of work. The quizzes are terrible, random details or facts from the long modules. Lots of notetaking and homework. Not worth the amount of time and effort required for a GEP.
Shes nice but even online theres a lot of work.
Acts like school/her class are the only things that exist. A very nice and understanding person but that doesn't matter when she expects hours of studying per day for a 1000-level class.
I will start out by saying that I learned a lot from this professor. If you are a communications major, this is a perfect introduction class for you. If, however, you are looking to take this class as a GEP I recommend looking at another class. She means well, but it's a LOT of work.
Honestly, this class wasn't that hard. Was it a lot of work? A bit. but not overwhelming. Each week you go through 2 Modules, 2 surveys (which take less than a min), and a quiz. There are 4 exams plus a cumulative final and plenty of extra credit. Dr. Hanlon was very sweet and understanding and i recommend her and this class.
Everything is open book, open note. If you are taking it online, that means you are allowed to access the entire webcourses module during the tests. Anybody who thinks this class was hard doesn't know how to ctrl+F through a document. If you're a fast reader, you can usually completely cover a week's worth of material for this class in 1-2 hours.
Do not take this class as a GEP. While tests are open note, the quizzes ask very specific questions that require intense note taking through the two modules due weekly. There is almost an impossible amount of work, from someone who did it the "right way" (actually reading things). Take if a COM major and want to learn a lot, otherwise DO NOT TAKE.
Do not take this class for GEP. The weekly workload is insane, tests are very specific questions that require intense note-taking, I sunk an insane amount of hours into this class and I'm not a COM major. COM majors who are very interested, sure take the class. Otherwise, steer clear! This is coming from someone who got an A+ and read everything.
Professor Hanlon is very sweet and she cares about you passing. However, this class is not an easy A and would not recommend for a GEP class. There's a lot of information for an intro class. 4 exams plus a cumulative final which covers 24 modules. They're open notes and control F will be your best friend.
The most work I've ever had for an online class, and mind you, this is a low level class. A very large amount of homework per week and said we have to at least work 30 hours a week on her class to pass. Acts like we do not have a life or even other classes besides hers. Tests/quizzes ask ridiculous questions meant to trick you on purpose.
Took Dr. Hanlon during the Summer B session and pretty much wrapping up her course as of now. I'd recommend this class as a way to ease into college classes, a module due almost everyday but it isn't that much reading and also tests/quizzes are open book. Great professor all around in my opinion no complaints.
Professor Hanlon is very passionate about her teaching but she gives way too much work for it being a low level graduation requirement class. I took it during the summer so it was faster paced but I still had to do a quiz every day for an entire module which is insane.
Dr. Hanlon is one of my favorite professors at UCF. Her lectures are entertaining and engaging and usually end a bit early. She always stays after class to answer any questions you may have, whether related to her class or not. Attendance is required and she tracks that through iClicker polls. Definitely recommend taking her classes.
Lots of work so requires good time management. However, the content itself was very interesting and you can tell the professor is very passionate about the subject she teaches. You can also tell she cares a lot about her students. Take lots of notes because test questions are very specific. A bit time-consuming but honestly worth it.
Great professor, very heavy with assignments and quizzes with one due just about every day. Need some sort of time management for this class but other than that, really great.
Very forgiving with late work.
Dr. Hanlon is such a sweet, funny, and helpful professor. She truly cares about her students and their success. I loved her class and thought the work was very easy. She is incredibly helpful and very generous with her late work policy. As long as you take good notes you won't have any issues with this class! I would definitely recommend her!
Dr. Hanlon was amazing! I just finished taking her class for the Summer B semester. There are a lot of quizzes and modules but they're only T/F. AND they're all open note. Just make a Google Doc, copy all the info into the doc, and it is very easy to get an A. She is super understanding and everything can be submitted up to a day late. An easy A.
The work load was a lot and very overwhelming each day, but as long as you stay on top of it, then you will be good. I loved it because she dropped the lowest quiz and exam grade at the end of the semester which really helped my grade. She had 2 extra credit opportunities. Do not take her class if have a busy schedule, very time consuming.
Sweetest professor in the advertising program. There's no reason any student shouldn't get an A in this class. Weekly online quizzes straight from the book, bi-weekly easy group reports, allows late work (up to 24 hours w/ no penalty), and has a zoom option for class.
Dr. Hanlon is such a sweet lady but my god did she give a lot of homework. For an intro COM course, nobody should be doing this much work. I'm taking her virtually and I still can't manage to get an A in her class. Two modules a week with two quizzes and two surveys. Only take this class if you're willing to live sleep and breathe COM 1000.
Really liked this class with Dr. Hanlon. While the content we were learning wasn't super interesting, she really tried really hard to make it as fun as possible. Her assignments are clear and concise and she does care about helping you. If you need to take COM as a GEP I highly recommend enrolling with her. She is flexible with deadlines too.
Plenty of quizzes, reading, and homework needed to pass this class.
Really annoying for an 1000 level GEP course. Please take a different professor, there were a lot of 15 page articles. I don't know why there was so much reading for this simple class. Wish I had taken this class in person, it would've been easier.
So much reading. 2 modules and a quiz every week and 4 segment exams that were open note and timed. Prepare to take a lot of notes as questions are very specific. We hardly used the book which was a waste of my money. Dr. Hanlon was very kind and offered a ton of bonus opportunities though. You can tell she cared about her students' success.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. The amount of modules, quizzes, exams, and notes that need to be taken efficiently by a ton of reading is ridiculous for a simple GEP course.
Very caring professor. Mixed mode class. Lots of group projects. Drops lowest weekly quiz and test at the end of the semester.
Dr. Hanlon's class was a little difficult / had a heavier workload for a GEP, but she was clearly very passionate about the subject, and her class was not particularly difficult. She was super nice and understanding. Her quizzes and tests were proctored, but they were open note. There were plenty of extra credit opportunities
Didn't read the super fine print of the syllabus that all tests/quizzes were open note & continuously got B/C's on tests/quizzes for like 4 weeks & literally could not recover my grade anymore past that regardless of how many A's I got (everything was proctored w/ a camera so I just assumed). Great professor but guys pls just do good from the start
TOO MUCH HARD WORK FOR AN INTRO GEP CLASS! STAY CLEAR
There is a lot to read and a substantial amount of assignments, however a decent chunk of them are just surveys so they're free points. Expect to read a LOT and take note of specific examples of concepts covered in the textbook.
There is absolutely no reason for an online Summer B class to have this heavy of a workload. If you want to pass, you HAVE to read the textbook, which would be fine if each module didn't take hours to get through on top of a group project all semester, quizzes, tests, essays, etc. Prof. seems caring but the class isn't worth it for this much work.
Easy class, but would not take it again with this professor. The material was easy to understand, but we mainly had to read the entire book to get ready for the exams. She gave random class assignments during the in-person class instead of lecturing and fully understanding the information from the book.
She's absolutely great! I loved this class because of her she makes it very interactive and you actually learn. Book is required if you want to pass the test.
I enjoyed this class. There are in class assignments due during class, so you have to go to class. But, for most of the semester we worked in groups for different advertising projects which was a lot of fun. There's a lot of content and vocab in the reading, so take good notes especially since the tests are open notes.
Dr. Hanlon is so kind and caring! You will learn all of the content online via canvas, and be aware that some of her modules are VERY long and time-consuming with a quiz at the end of each week. Final grade is very dependent on class participation, but she provides an extra-credit opportunity to make-up for 1 missed class. Definitely take her!
If you apply yourself, this class is not difficult. You have an online module every week with a 10 question quiz, followed by an in-person lecture that explains content, provides tools, and helps review for the larger tests. Find a routine and do the work and you'll be set. She's considerate and accommodating, and I highly recommend her.
Dr. Hanlon is a nice professor who truly cares about her students but everything in person is group work which I despise. Inevitably there are groups that don't get along & group members who don't do work. There was virtually no real reason to attend in person class because you learned nothing but had to go for group work points. Easy class though.
Excellent professor very nice and bubbly. Teaches well, constructive feedback, not a lot of homewoek
Professor Hanlon is an amazing professor who's super engaging and cares about her students' success. The speeches are easy to do well on so long as you hit all the necessary points but the tests are a bit tricky if you don't do the modules though they're technically not 'mandatory.'
Wouldn't take this professor again. For each quiz/module you basically have to read the entire book and make sure you've seen every graphic, embedded video, article, etc for 10 questions. Everything has a lockdown browser, even 1 point surveys. Tough grader, the most reading ever, and she treats it more like an online class than an in person one.
Professor Hanlon's COM1000 class has a heavy workload, but she genuinely cares about students' success. Utilize helpful resources like the textbook, unstuckstudy ai, and bonus opportunities to ace the timed, open-note assessments.
Hanlon was so far been an awful experience. She has been one of the most confusing, unclear professors I have had in my education thus far. The weekly workload is unbearable and considering your taking 2-3 other classes than hers its impossible to keep up with nothing you study for is on the tests and having due dates on tuesday/thursday is so hard
STAY AWAY. She is the worst professor I've ever had. I also have her for MMC3630 and we are repeating the same assignments we do there here. Exactly the same, I'm paying for the same class twice. She reuses assignments, is passive aggressive, and confusing. Her quizzes and exams are also very hard, our class average is always around 50%.
She's the kind of professor that'll take off points if your canva presentation isn't a specific size. I cannot express how hard of a grader she is. All around confusing, her quizzes and exam are difficult, and at the end of the semester she's throws an overwhelming amount of extra credit us during finals so her class average isn't so low. Awful.
Just do yourself a favor and avoid her at all costs. All the bad reviews before mine say it perfectly. She doesn't teach, she is extremely passive-aggressive, and is unorganized. This advertising class was the EXACT same as her social media class. I can't believe I paid more than $1200 to be taught the same, useless content.
DON'T BE ALARMED BY THE REVIEWS!!! Yes, she is a tough grader and has a decently heavy workload. However, both quizzes and exams are open note. The attendance is mandatory to incentivize active participation in group projects. The workload is heavy, but it's easy if you are a driven student. She also offers a decent amount of extra credit.
While this class offers great experience, the workload is heavy and grading criteria is vague. If you are someone with strong work ethic and is passionate about building experience, this class is a great match. However, if you can't keep up with multiple quizzes, textbook reading, group projects, and certification training, I would avoid.
Super nice & engaging w/ students. Online COM1000 course included 7 assignments, 7 quizzes & 4 exams (lowest dropped), and 3 extra credit opportunities. Lockdown for quizzes & exams but open notes w/ no textbook.
I did not enjoy this class whatsoever. The grading was completely random. The quizzes and exams were hard. The final was 96 questions in 1 hour and 40 mins. Group project was so much work. Have to use lockdown browser for every single quiz, survey, and exam. If you can take another prof DO IT. if she's the only option, you'll live but be prepared.
Group project was insanely complicated. Class has a lot of (unnecessary) work. Prepare to post on LinkedIn for a semester long assignment. Grading seems random and unfair. Quizzes and exams were extremely time consuming and complicated. Lockdown browser for every quiz, survey, & exam was extremely time consuming (and open note so why lockdown…?)
The class was fully online, so she just gave us chapters to read and videos to watch. Every single quiz used Lockdown Browser, including surveys that took 30 seconds to complete. There was an insane amount of material to get through every week. I easily worked on this class more than my other 3 combined.
BEWARE! She seems nice enough but her classes have easily been the worst I've ever taken. Lockdown browser used for EVERYTHING. Grading is random and assignment criteria was confusing. In addition to the weekly readings, videos, group project, quizzes, and surveys she also requires 15hrs of EXTRA certifications. Definitely wouldn't recommend.
She has good intentions, but prof Hanlon uses Honorlock for not only quizzes each week but also for unnecessary surveys after, as if i'll cheat on something that reviews the class lol. the group project was fine, but my group sucked so I carried mostly. Luckily, quizzes are directly from textbook and modules.
Very kind professor, yes she uses Lockdown browser, but you can use a second device that isn't locked. Provided extensions, canceled in-person class a lot, I only attended a few times, very communicative and encouraging, assignments are strait forward, easy to follow along with. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Take her if you can!
I don't recommend Professor Hanlon MMC3630. Don't assume it's easy because it's about social media. Every assignment, even surveys, requires a lockdown browser, and there are no rubrics, so you may lose points for unclear requirements. While extra credit is available, group work is also required. Without extra credit, my grade would've suffered.
There is a lot of work (all quizzes and exams are open note/book), but ultimately, she cares a lot about what she does and her students. She offered over 20 points of extra credit at the end of the semester, and she was always excited to be in class. She did, however, use very "copy and pasted" responses for questions you would email her about.
Take her classes in person rather than online, because this was completely virtual group work with people you have never met. You were randomly assigned a group and you had to figure out, on your own time, zoom meetings and group chats and assignments within your group. There was extra credit, but it is the luck of the draw with your group.
DO NOT TAKE CHRISTINE HANLON FOR ANY CLASS. Long winded modules full of articles you can't ctrl+f due to being badly scanned, LinkedIn Learnings in modules that she grades you on. THE PROCTORED EXAMS OMG for everything. OH, and you have to do tons of 3rd party certifications and upload to linked in every week or you don't pass. Cumulative exam. BAD
Everyone on here that says she has lockdown browser for everything yada yada haven't read the syllabus, yes she uses it but she will let you use your textbook/notes on quizzes and exams!!!! you just have to say to the camera what you're looking at and show it that you're not using chat or google! so doable!!!!
I loved getting to have Dr.Hanlon as my professor! I had her for both ADV 3008 and MMC 3630. I enjoyed both of her classes and what was learned. All quizzes and exams are open note/book and she has a couple extra credit assignments in both classes. She truly cares about her students!
Professor Hanlon seriously cares about what she is lecturing about! Her enthusiasm helped motivate me to fully grasp each concept as well. Tests and quizzes are open note, and most of the content comes from the textbook or LinkedIn Learning. She helps you earn many certifications that are useful in the communications field! I definitely recommend!
Professor Hanlon had such an amazing class. She has extra credit opportunities, one group project only in class that is so easy. Everything is lock down browser but open note. Her class is mandatory but the lectures are free lol and entertaining. So many quizzes but open note, 100% take her again.
I took summer semester so the material was shorter and quicker. She provides lots of videos as well as written elaborations for both auditory and visual learners. She is super kind and quirky in her lecture videos. Every quiz and exam is proctured but open note. She also provides 1 extra credit assignment. Great class for a GEP!
The requirements she has for lockdown browser are unreal. Unable to take quizzes or test outside of lock down browser and must show your whole room, must show govt id or student id and record audio of yourself speaking. And then with the lockdown browser you must use it on computer no Tablet. Major micro managing.
Very big micromanager, Everything is on Lockdown Browser. Quizzes are hard and she provides no study guides ever. Sometimes you need to read multiple chapters in 1 week to get quizzed on. Group project in class with unclear guidelines. Intentionally makes the class hard. 95% of my time is spent on this class than my other 4.
dont take her...DONT DO IT...just save urself
Hanlon turns an easy social media concept into a nightmare. Nearly every assignment—even the intro one—is proctored. Tests rely on course videos with super specific stats. Plus, part of your grade comes from posting on LinkedIn. Fine if you're jobless, overwhelming if not.
Great professor but don't love her online classes. Everything uses Honorlock + cam but it's all open note. Honorlock gets incredibly annoying. Assignments + quizzes each week and 3 exams + final. You NEED to post on LinkedIn and do "something with your life". She's a good prof in person but I prob wouldn't take an online class again.
This class was very easy overall as everything is open note, but you are graded on attendance. You work on a group project in class, so make sure you sit near people you might want to work with the first few classes, because that is who you will end up working with. I didn't learn anything in this class unfortunately.
Great professor, cares for her students. Always is looking for feedback to improve her teaching style. Only thing that is super annoying is she uses lockdown browser for all her quizzes & exams which is annoying to sign into. Exams and quizzes are open notes and straightforward but you still need to look at the material to get a good grade.
Professor Hanlon is very passionate about Advertising and it was refreshing to see someone excited to actually teach, that being said the workload was a lot despite being within a group. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss just one lecture you will fall behind, however she is very open to helping you out if you attend her office hours.
DO YOUR LINKEDIN ASSIGNMENTS WEEKLY!!!!!! Love this class and Professor Hanlon, but the Linkedin Assignments can make or break a grade. 2 ec opportunities, lowdown browser tests and quizzes every week.
Hanlon is a very sweet person, but her teaching style is pretty bad. She forces you to use lockdown browser even though she allows you to use your notes, which adds an unnecessary hurdle to completing work. The coursework of this class is not very interesting, and Hanlon's tests are oddly worded. She's enjoyable in person, not online
