75% of the syllabus wasn't covered, the grading was 40% midterm, 60% final which left no room for failure. the reading was constantly being changed, and there was a TON of it. she was also rude and condescending, publicly humiliating students on a regular basis. i aced the class, but nearly died
Love her!
Terrible professor. Rude, condescending. Seemed to hold a vendetta against certain students for no apparent reason. Did not get through whole syllabus. She loved to tout her own books and scholarship (I subsequently discovered much better material out there).
VERY TOUGH. sooo much reading and all of it was on the midterm and final. she's an extremely smart lady and I learned more from her class than from any other I have taken but I was in tears trying to study. Do NOT raise your hand in class if you don't know for SURE what you're talking about!!!!
Friendly, helpful and very smart!
Cold, unreceptive. Unwilling to reach out to students in need. Fully competent in field and an admirable lecturer, but clearly deficient in compassion or empathy. If you believe you will have any difficulty with her curriculum, I CANNOT recommend her courses.
Professor Harrington has a bad rap because she assigns a lot of reading, but she's the best teacher I've had here. She truly cares about the subject and that makes lectures a lot more interesting than the others I've seen in the politics department. In a class of 80 or so, she still tries to interact with her students--FAR from cold!
Well its definitely not an easy course, there is a lot of reading and the tests and papers shes demanding. However if you put in the time, you will get the grade. And shes smart and funny, so if you enjoy doing the work, you will like the class.
Be aware: Professor Harrington has an extreme liberal bias. Maybe I should have known this, but I have never taken a law or political science type of course before. now i know. The class is a lot of work. If you enjoy the subject and share all her opinions, you will probably like the course. If you don't, you will probably hate it. I hated it.
interesting material and excellent professor
one of those classes to get through. lots of reading, but necessary to do well on the two essay format exams. not hard to do well if you take good notes and do the reading. she even gave us 6 sample questions to study for the final and said three would be on the test. talks a lot about the importance of class discussion, but doesn't demand it.
ALOT of reading. Very smart woman.
Condescending, dull, and annoying. Takes seriously the whole "professor"-"student" hierarchy extremely seriously. The class is hard, and her lack of teaching skills makes it no easier. Stay away.
Harringtons really far to the left, almost communist, haha! But cool during class, except shes a jerk & never answers students' emails. Snob. Learned a lot during L&S but lots of reading & synthesizing lecture notes w/readings. Shes not very approachable & i wanna call her an intellectual charlatan but that wouldnt be fair coz shes wicked smart...
She has a liberal/feminist slant to her lectures and they are not too organized. Not a very hard class if you get the notes from the lectures. A decent class if you're interested a sociological perspective on politics and law.
Does have a liberal bias, reflected in teaching. Will grille you if you make a comment in class. Doesn't like discussion or taking questions. Very well-versed in her field, but should not be teaching at undergrad level. About 5x as much reading as should be present. Grading tough, but not egregious. Caution.
She is definitely stern but extremely intelligent! lots!! of reading but if you do it and attend lecture youre ok! 40/60 grade breakdown. I was really overwhelmed at first but i learned so much and it was all worth it! her grading is surprisingly lenient too! take her!!!
I took Harrington's Politics of Administrative Law class. She is very smart and an engaging lecturer, but you HAVE to attend lecture and do all of the many readings to have any idea what is going on. Overall I respect her quite a lot and despite the work load, was happy I chose to take the class.
Simply brilliant. A wonderful prof. She's a passionate speaker, if not always clear - often goes on (useful) tangents. Her intimidating 40/60 grade breakdown is fluid in that she recognizes a student's improvement and development over the semester with higher grades. Do the readings. Go to class. Take copious notes. Nobody said it would be easy...
Gender in Law is extremely rough - in 2 senses. She taught it for the first time since 1996 in Spring 10 when I took it and the objectives & basic concepts of the course are still sketchy. Also it is insanely rigorous. READ EVERYTHING she assigns (even if it's optional), & FORM STUDY GROUPS for the best preparation strategy for the monstrous exam.
Poor lecturer, whose mind and speaking wanders from topic to topic fairly aimlessly, and never w/ anything interesting to say. Much more a law class than a politics class
She's an extremely intelligent and accomplished professor and an entertaining lecturer - but she definitely should be teaching grad students, not undergrads. This class should be taught in the law school instead of the CAS poli sci department.
I'm a hardcore liberal feminist, but Harrington goes far enough to stifle (potentially interesting) debate. Graders will take points off for anything which doesn't perfectly echo the entirety of the lectures and readings; unreasonable for a long test; geared far more toward pointless memorization than learning. Approachable, but not a great course.
She will kick your ass yes, but one of the most challenging undergrad law prof. at NYU. I recommend taking other law courses first so you already know the jargon. I never got the "super feminist" thing ppl talk about, but I was in Admin. Law not L&S. If you are ready to work hard but learn a lot then she is the prof.
I've had Harrington for "Gender In Law" and "Civil Liberties"; I enjoyed them both immensely! She is an interesting lecturer and makes class worth attending. Yes, it's a lot of reading and the exams require a significant amount of study time. Put in your part and she will work with you to get the grade.
maybe she got way easier, but I had no problem doing well in civil liberties and my work ethic is amongst the worst in this university. 40/60 midterm final. attendance not mandatory. bought the wrong book and it didnt matter. shes spirited and a human encyclopedia concerning law. very impressive. taking another class with her this fall
Admin Law: Tough class-- a lot of reading, and you really need to do it. Know your stuff and good grades will come easily. No BS-ing through this course, though try you may. Really difficult to understand the legal jargon, but by the end of the course you'll have the hang of it.
She's a great professor. Bright intellectual with a lot to say. I enjoyed lectures a lot and talking with her outside of class. Lots of reading and syllabus all over the place, but overall worthwhile. I learned a lot.
Hate this class SO MUCH. Came into it thinking it'd be a intro to law b/c I want to go to law school. WRONG. This woman doesn't explain ANY of her stupid legal jargon and the things she says just goes right over my head. Too much reading. Goes on ridiculous tangents. Over-explains to the point of confusion. Straight A student with a C- so far. GAH.
She is SUPER intelligent. Because of that, she is very unclear. Everything she says is so intellectual that it's almost impossible to all follow. The reading is extremely important. The material is very complex
She shouldn't be teaching at an undergraduate level. Requires the reading of 200+ page books just for thematic material. She expects a different type of thinking than ANYONE at NYU is accustomed to. Only with an already strong critical style will you do well, and you won't have fun. She covers material slowly and blames her class for the pace.
She is so vague and does not know how to teach. She needs to make her points more clear. Her whole class needs to be reorganized. Would never recommend this class.
Prof. Harrington is quite honestly one of the smartest professors I've had at NYU. The workload is intense and not for anybody looking for an easy A--she treats the class as if you're in law school. Your overall grade is based on a midterm and a final (40/60, respectively), so the course is indeed stressful. That said, take it if you want to learn.
Her class is hard, and she expects a lot from her students. However, she's a brilliant professor and is very willing to help if you go to her with questions. Do the reading, pay attention in class, ask questions and you'll do well.
She's brilliant. DO NOT take this class if you want an easy, fun politics class. Dense material that requires a lot of reading & thinking. Get to know her—she's really a wonderful professor and enjoys seeing her students learn and engage with the material. 40/60 midterm/final leaves no room for error, so study hard & pay attention.
She is a horrible human being point blank. Not saying this because I did not do well in the class either. I actually found the class quite easy. However, I must say though she is brilliant, she is one of the worst Professor's I have ever had at this school. Very condescending and does not value her students. Horrible person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class is no easy A. She's brilliant, but yes, she can be quite condescening to the point where it's just mean. Very no-nosense. Some won't pass without reading the book, but I stopped reading after the first class and still made it out with an A- because I spoke up in class, went to office hours about grades, and just made sure she knew me!
She is the best professor I've had at NYU by far. Her class is definitely not easy and the material is dense, but it's worth the struggle. Professor Harrington is brilliant and extremely captivating when she teaches. As long as you do the readings and pay attention in class getting an A shouldn't be very difficult.
Her lectures aren't boring or dry but they often fail to get through the dense material she outlines as she gets off topic or casually talks to us about it without giving us the substance. She expects you to read the textbook and other things but I didn't touch them and did well. She's a funny lady, but wish she'd be more organized.
PAL is a very dense course and as intelligent as professor is, she often would not get a straight point across, so you really need to focus in class. There are lots of readings to do, but you can get by with some case briefs. She really wants you to know concepts and they are very important for the midterm and final! She's tough but you learn alot!
A brilliant human being and has so much knowledge!! Her class is undeniably difficult and has lots of readings involved. However, if you focus in class and take good notes (record the lectures and relisten and take more detailed notes at home) and do the readings and outline them then an A should be easy to get. Great person to know for rec letters
She is brilliant and her lectures can be difficult to follow if you do not have a solid ps/law background. We read a total of 5-6 books in which we discuss what was read during recitation at the end of the week where your grade depends on your attendance. We read actual cases from plessy v ferguson. discussed everything 1930s-early 2000s.
Would probably not take her class again. Both TA's from my class quit 2 weeks before the final - recitations immediately cancelled, no review sessions, etc. I went to nearly every lecture, transcribed lectures, did readings, and I have such a low level of comprehension it wasn't worth the money. Sad I wasted 4 credits on this class.
Only take Harrington if you hate yourself. Every person I've talked to in this course hated her. Her own TAs hated her - so much so that they resigned 2 weeks before the final. She got a replacement TA in one of her courses, and the replacement TA quit too. You can't even ask a simple question or go to the bathroom without her being rude.
I took the class with the other people here this semester. Yes we lost our TA a few weeks before the final but that was not Harrington's fault. This class isn't easy. You have to do the readings, go to class, and reread. If you don't have interest in supreme court cases, don't take this class. But I do, and I generally liked the class.
I knew this class would be hard but that's an understatement. Both our TA's quit 2 weeks before the final so there was no assistance at all. I went to every lecture and did all the readings and it was still impossible to do well. Not accessible at all and expected you to have a complex level of knowledge of US politics & history prior to the class.
She knows a lot, there's no denying it. But she expects you to know a lot of things outside the material that even I, with a minor in Politics, don't know yet. Her lectures go HIGHLY off-topic, making notetaking difficult. We were always 'catching up'. I'm on the Dean's List, and used to lectures, but paying attention is extremely difficult.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU'RE READY FOR SERIOUS WORK. I learnt a lot in this class, still wasn't worth it. I hated every second of this course, and Harrington was consistently condescending and expected a level of pre-existing knowledge that, as a foreigner, I did not have. Taking US Constitution before might help.
Harrington has a small cult of students that follow her and love her...I am not one of them. She rambles on and goes all over the place in class. Harrington has a very strong ideology and impresses it on her students. Class is 40% midterm and 60% final. Would not recommend. My reaction structure was dreadful. one of the worst classes I've taken.
don't take this class unless you live & breathe gender studies. Harrington KNOWS her stuff & is intense, if you have even the slightest doubt after first lecture, switch out while you can. exams are done in class but using your own laptops, which is great until you have tech issues, prof not understanding or helpful resolving tech.
Literally writing this during one of her lectures. She has no understanding of technology and no motivation to learn. We spend the first HOUR of class waiting for her to figure out how to start her powerpoint most days, and she won't listen to students who try to help her. Knows her stuff but expects you to memorize every textbook page.
I personally did all of the readings, attended all lectures, took notes, yet I scored below the already low midterm average of 80, due to extremely tough grading + no study guide. I have learned a lot but sadly grades don't measure learning in this class... Cs are 2/5 and Bs are 3.5, so C level work will earn you a 40% on her exams (yes, for real)
Love her politics and critical eye, absolutely hate her teaching style. Expects you to read hundreds of pages of thick text, uses obscure legal jargon, and is super unclear about expectations for assignments and tests (which there are two: midterm and final). I want to go to law school and this class really is dissuading me from it.
was super rude and unhelpful the whole semester despite a pandemic.
She is very boring I do not recommend taking any class with her. She was really boring and did very little to engage with students. The worst professor I've encountered at NYU
DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR HARRINGTON. She is known throughout NYU for being awful and cruel (had her entire TA staff quit because of her cruelty, berates people for asking valid questions or going to the bathroom, insists on using tech she cannot work and will yell at you for tech difficulties, etc). Class is wildly difficult and she is extremely mean.
Wouldn't recommend. She doesn't know her own material well enough.
Often goes off topic. It was very difficult to follow her chain of thought. I would never take this professor again.
Professor Harrington is a pretty strict and tough grader. She means well and can be nice but is usually rather blunt. To be honest, she gave me anxiety and there is no structure to her lectures. You literally have to write down every single thing she says. That being said, if you do the reading and reach out to her or the TA it should help.
Definitely a lot of reading. I would encourage a lot of note-taking on both lectures and readings. It will help a bunch when composing study guides. There is a lot of material, but you will find it interesting if you're into politics. We learned not just about administrative law but political economy and history as well. Use office hours!!!
Professor Harrington is absolutely amazing. She is a great lecturer and instructions are very clear for assignments and exams. She also took time with myself and another classmate in office hours every week to review subjects and get to know us. It is clear that she cares about her students and wants us to succeed.
do not take her. doesn't care ab low income students, requires purchasing expensive textbook & additional books, assigns way too much reading to actually do (full 300 pg books in 2 classes), speaks in such jargon-heavy language you can't understand her, can't give direct answers ever grade breakdown is 10% participation, 30% midterm and 60% final
Info is valuable but lectures disorganized rant based on >100 dense pages per week. Talks like she's addressing Congress then expects you to synthesize an absurd mass of material into timed essays that a lay person can understand. Girl I am not a lay person, I can't understand you. Prob got a B/+ just reading. Oh, and treats staff like dog water.
Her lectures were honestly terrible. Her lecturing resembled an interior monologue, so very hard to take notes. Like others said, readings are quite difficult and assume a certain level of law and society knowledge as well as US-specific knowledge. Exams were very hard and of course the grading was tough. Do not take unless passionate about course.
If you want your GPA to drop, this is the class for you. The most amount of work I have ever put into a class and I got the worst grade I have ever received in my entire life. A shame because I learned so much but the way it was graded was terrible. Not worth it
She is incredibly intelligent and so knowledgeable about gender in law but sometimes she forgets that her students aren't her. She really appreciated it when students went to office hours and introduced themselves. The grading breakdown is straight-up ridiculous (a 50% final??), but studying does work (you have to study a lot). Have tough skin.
Tested material is super lecture-heavy, and her lectures are basically her inner monologue - stream of consciousness that skips forward and jumps back with no syntax. Awful with tech, and treats staff/students with condescension and no manners. Incredibly rude and arrogant. Too bad b/c she's smart and basically invented the law and society field.
Heavily lecture based. Admin Law is manageable as long as you learn all of the material on your own; the only reason why lectures are important is because she hints at the most important things and the components you will be tested on (which are completely random). TA's do all the work and she is not open to discussions about grades.
One of the worst professors I have ever had in my life. Won't give homework and only grades class on hard quizzes, the midterm, and the final. She needs to give homework so we understand how to perform well in class.
The only good thing about Professor Harrington, is that she seems to care about what she's teaching, but she is very discouraging of participation as she embaresses students who try and answer her questions. Also the final exam is worth 50% of your grade. The class is very difficult, there is no flexibility with deadlines. Would not recommend.
Be ready to take notes. I wouldn't recommend missing class because you'll only be graded on what she lectures and not necessarily on what the readings/slides say. Her lectures are great because she's clearly very passionate about the subject so the content doesn't become super dense + she was always interested in the students' opinions.
If you don't do the readings and miss lectures you will ultimately do bad on the midterm and final. She expects you to remember key things across the board and you will have to recall a lot for the exams. There are also times she says important things not on the slides so must pay attention. However, I did learn a lot from the class itself.
I honestly have such mixed feelings on her. I honestly loved the course material and I think she's extremely smart. BUT what people say is true. She is abrassive and embarrasses you for going to the bathroom and asking questions. I'm hesitant to take another class with her but I did love the substance of the class. You need to have tough skin.
She is very blunt. Clearly very knowledgeable in her field, but does not explain the information in a way that is digestible for undergraduates. IMO a professor should not behave in a way that makes their students afraid to speak or ask questions in class, but the topics covered are interesting at least.
She holds herself on a high pedestal and is quite intimidating. She is knowledgable but overcomplicates simple issues. I enjoyed taking the class for what I learned but Professor Harrington was not fun. It was hard not to fall asleep in lecture sometimes.
Lectures are confusing. She often struggles to answer simple questions in class and misses details. The critical essay prompt was confusing. But her expectations are high. Final is 50% of your grade. She clearly loves politics, but isn't a great teacher. I loved the material, but it's not worth the GPA hit. Also, she's not mean, just blunt.
She's tough. But study hard and it's very much worth it
bro thinks she's Shakespeare reincarnated but actually just a boomer who likes to insult people as a hobby. Do not take unless u wanna get roasted every Mon/wed.
Her lectures are so boring and always put me to sleep. She is unable to answer questions and humiliates u when u go to the bathroom. She has the same tone the whole time. She's mumbling to herself, not teaching. She does not seem passionate about any of the content. The work is insane. DONT. TAKE. HER.
Professor Harrington relies solely on lectures. The grade in the class is based ONLY on the midterm, final, and participation. She humiliates students and gets upset when they use the bathroom. She constantly asks if we are understanding the material, but does not realize that students are not participating because she is intimidating.
I have now taken two classes with Prof Harrington and is what people say in reviews true? Yes. But she loves people who participate and I think if you can break through the fear of possible humiliation, you might just come to love her classes and find her endearing. and I like the content. I think people just have to have more courage tbh...
Hard-to-follow lectures with often incoherent slides. Tries to start discussions by asking questions, but one lecture students had to ask for clarification on every question because they were hard to understand. Lots of outdated pre-2020s reading, which is important for the midterm and final, the only grades. TA was great and informative though.
