Makes history fun, not just memorization of dates.
Very clear and easy to understand. Makes History enjoyable.
Makes class incredibly interesting.
Great teacher! Makes boring subject matter interesting.
Great Teacher... Great Class
bad class, horrible teacher
great person and teacher, very interesting
makes history fun!
she'll "hum a few bars" about everything!no real textbook.pages of notes.boring!
Extremely , lectures are interesting , tests are very fair,
She's awesome. Multiple Choice Mid-Term & Final, 1 paper, and 1 quiz per week.
Wonderful person, most is discussion, two papers now exams
She is super coo!
awesome prof, really knows her stuff...funny too!!! highly recommended!
Awesome teacher. Very enthusiastic. Knows what she's talking about. Will make sure you understand everything. Make sure you sit in the front, or else you might not be able to hear her.
Great teacher. Always answers questions even in the middle of lecture.
An example of what a Delaware professor should be! Excited and engaging. Wonderful lecturer. I actually enjoyed going! Quizzes weekly, but they are easy and help prep for test. Light readings.
she's awesome. i love this class. BUT our so-called essay assignment was complete bulls**t.
talks very low, sit upfront. minimal work. no text so make sure you get notes from class, she just talks, no overheads
reminds me of ms. frizzle from the magic school bus. really nice lady. too bad her TAs were jerks. no text, take lots of notes.
Great teacher...makes history fun..However, she gives too much power to the TA's. The TA's were horrible and power hungry. Test are too subjective and filled with trick questions. Lectures are great, tests are not.
She was great the TAs blew! I hated my TA and it ruined the class for me -- BEWARE --
Great lecturer, places a little too much emphasis on discussion. Highly recommended.
Kinda reminds me of Mrs Frazzle from the Magic School Bus, very engaging, easy tests, just give your opinion in discussion and you'll get an A.
Not a bad teacher but sucks she doesnt have a text book so you have to go to every class and if you zone out you could miss something important. Also lots of pop quizes. Class is pretty interesting and the 2 tests multiple choice comes off those quizes. I recommend taking the class its just a little bit of a pain in the ass.
Christine is very engaging and makes it a point to learn every students name in her class of 150, pretty impressive. But, terribly boring and no text book, so missing class is a bad idea. Harder than I thought it should have been. Oh, did I mention how BORING it was?
Prof. Heyrman makes American History very interesting. She has a genuine interest in what she teaches as well as her students. She makes the class fun and exciting. I would definitely recommend her to anyone. We read 4-5 books (honors added another 2), online sources, wrote two papers for the midterm and two papers for the final.
very good lecturer and has a great sense of humor. Class is very engaging and Heryman is one of the best professors I've had at UD. Tests and quizzes can be tricky but if you study you'll do well. Professor is also extremely nice and helpful. Class is highly recommended
By far one of my favorite professors I have had. Great sense of humor, and always makes class fun. She really seems to love teaching and it shows in lecture. No textbook, but reading from other books. Go to class, take notes, skim the readings and you will do great.
Great teacher. It kind of sucks that the lass doesnt have a textbook. For test you have to relay totally on your notes, so take good ones. You have to take a discussion section for this class so that helps alot. I ended up with an A-
Be sure to go to class, take good notes, and try to avoid zoning out. She's nice and tries to make everything as interesting as possible. Quiz questions from discussion are used on the midterm and final and you can use notes for both, which is really helpful. Overall, this class is worth taking.
Christine is so nice and so enthusiastic. She makes classes interesting which is good bc you have to go. She doesnt use a textbook so you have to take good notes. Make sure you participate in section and do ok on the quizzes. The midterm and final are openbook and she gives you the essay questions ahead of time so theyre pretty easy. Take her!
Attendance required at the discussions. Her weekly quizzes weren't always easy, but she was a great teacher who made history really interesting. Weekly quizzes, two exams, one paper. The honors kids only had to read two extra books and then she took us out to dinner to discuss them! Take her if you can.
What a great professor! She is so knowledgable and very engaging. The exams are incredibly easy if you go to class and read the books. I enjoyed this class so much, wish there were more professors like her.
Took the honors section, definitely recommend it because it's the best way for her to get to know you personally. Great lectures and discussions, she clearly knows everything about the time period and she cares a great deal. Easy grader, exams are open book and open note, one essay and a few outside books, although no text book. She's the best!
I don't agree with most of these comments, and neither does anyone I know in this class. She's a good teacher but the quizzes every Friday are HARD. Average score for the class is usually a 6 or 7 out of 10. Midterm seemed okay, but I ended up getting a C and so did all my friends. I'll probably get a B- when I thought it would be an easy A..
this class was harrrrd! thought it was going to be easy because of the comments but jeesh, no way! prof is SO smart and knows so much, but just incredibly difficult to follow in lectures, especially because she rambles so much... quizes in discussion every week are pretty tough too... got a B in the class, but have no idea how... AVOID AVOID AVOID
She is SO knowledgable and will learn everyone's names. She is the sweetest woman and really wants you to obtain the material and will clarify anything you ask. I strongly suggest her. 2 open note exams and one 5 page paper, not bad at all.
Professor Heyrman is such an amazing professor. She cares about her students and makes US History so much more interesting. She engages the class by reading about 5 or 6 novels and not a boring textbook. She also understands that we are going through alot and makes the class college-leveled but as easy as possible for you to pass. YOU MUST TAKE HER
Heyrman is an amazing professor. Her expectations of reading and participation are intimidating, but GO TO CLASS- she's brilliant and makes the material interesting. Not only that, she's really encouraging and willing to help you understand any points of confusion. Detailed notes of lecturesdiscussions will help a TON with 2 essay tests.
She basically just lectures every class and you have to try your best to write down whatever you hear. She doesnt really use electronics so nothing is ever posted online. You have to read a novel every week and have a quiz on fridays which sucks, Her exams are mostly essays but she lets you use your notes.
Took this for a second writing and did nothing extra, just met with her to talk about my writing. A lot of reading, five 5 page papers, and a lot of discussion in class. If you take good notes and write well you'll do fine. She's really understanding and helpful. Great teacher.
Prof. Heyrman was a great professor! She was very enthusiastic about the topic but she assigns like 6 novels to read in place of a textbook. I managed to get through them all and skimmed one of them and did fine. Really pay attention to her lectures though as you may miss a lot of material if you zone out.
One of the best professors on campus. Going to class is essential, but her interesting lectures will definitely make it worth your while. No textbook, just a selection of a bunch of different books and online readings. Be prepared to read /a lot/, and be prepared to discuss. Only bad thing is no exams, just two very long papers.
Professor Heyrman is an all-around perfect history professor. Her lectures are very easy to follow and her quizzes and exams do not contain any surprises. She is also very funny in class and interesting to be around. I would definitely consider taking another one of her classes.
Best history professor! She facilitates a fantastic discussion that always makes students think deeper. I was alway excited for class! That being said, there is a lot of reading. You will need all of the books! Grading is: 3 papers (2 for midterm, 1 for final) and participation (each 33%). Hope to take her class again! Awesome course & professor!
Professor Heyrman is a great professor. She is truly passionate about history & made the material very interesting. Mostly lectures w/occasional discussions on assigned readings (short books, no typical textbook). Easy multiple choice pop quizzes every week or so. Midterm, final, paper, & quizzes make up your grade. Take this if you can!
Christine (what she likes to be called) is a great professor. However, the difficulty of history152 is heavily based upon the TA. If you get Jeff Appelhans as a TA TAKE A DIFFERENT COURSE! He is a very tough grader and this will not be an "easy A."
She is one of the nicest people you will meet. Her lectures are so entertaining and she always makes sure that everyone is understanding what she is saying. Couple pop quizzes but they usually come after any reading we had the night before ( there aren't many). Definitely so nice and definitely worth taking the class to fill a requirement.
Christine is the best! She really cares about the students and wants all of us to succeed. The only grades are 2 really long papers and participation. Definitely attend class and take good notes. Participation is definitely encouraged and keeping up with the readings is helpful. Not a very tough grader. A hard class, but an A is very possible!
Midterm and final are both essays around 10 pages. No other assignments but if you participate she'll bump your grade up. Classes are heavily discussion based, she calls on everybody so do the readings, its a lot sometimes but doable. When we switched to online classes she didn't change the class at all and expected the same kind of participation.
When the online transition occurred the quizzes were removed making both the midterm and final half each of the total grade and participation would be extra credit. However, barely talked about the actual civil war despite the course description saying otherwise.
grades very few things so it is hard to make up for a poor grade. Lots of outside of class learning but great at answering any and all questions when you need help. Very passionate about history but it can get confusing when there are topic jumps that she knows about but students might not.
Only recourses you can use for your papers are the lectures she assigned (2 per a week, each 1 hour) and the readings which are pages and pages. Only 5 papers and participation and the prompts are sometimes hard to understand. Wouldnt take her class again.
the class is based on 3 papers which definitely makes passing hard, I believe you also get a few points for participating in discussions. Christine is a nice lady, super quiet, definitely sit towards the front. go to lectures ! if you miss one its so hard to catch back up if you miss one. there are 3 books, you don't really need to read them
While she's super nice, all Heyrman does is lecture. That's it. She reads off a script and most of the information isn't on the slides. The only grades are 3, 7 page essays. She does quite a few discussions based off assigned readings. If you don't read them, don't even come to class because she will call on you whether you raise your hand or not.
Christine only gives 3 exams for the semester and thats your entire grade. Each exam is 3 essays that she grades HARD on. Her PowerPoints dont explain topics well so if you miss class, you wont do good on your exam. I wish we had more opportunities to get our grade up because if you do bad on one or two essay exams, your grade is screwed
The 3 essay exams are easy if you go to lectures and take good notes. Very passionate about the topic and can answer any questions. The essay exams are not too bad, reviewed 85% on both so far. Expected to read but unlikely she will find out if you read or not. Not worth getting the books, can look up online.
There are only a total of 3 grades for the class. You have 3 essays. There is no text book so you only have the lectures to go from. If you do horrible on the first exam you only have 2 more chance to boost you grade. She reads from a script and often skips around topic which makes it hard to follow along. I would not take this class again.
I repeatedly asked for help with the course. Not only was she rude and dismissive, but offered me no resources or assistance (despite me taking this course out of pure interest). I'm not sure why she teaches unless it is for research purposes, because it does not seem like she is there for the students or has any interest in helping them to learn.
awful
Do not take this class
This class was pretty boring, but professor Heyrman was an easy grader and all your grade is 3 essays, just make sure you actually read and you will be fine
She has no interest in helping you or seeing you succeed. She grades for this intro course like it's at an advanced level and does not provide support for students with disabilities. When I asked for support for my disability, she wrote me an email back telling me that she'd done as much as she was going to, and not to ask for her help again.
I did not enjoy taking this class at all, if you don't need it don't take it. Many class discussions and she will call on anybody whether or not you offer to participate. Lots of readings are required and there's pop quizzes usually at least once a week. Also not many assignments, just quizzes and two big papers.
I took this course thinking it would be interesting and it was, but it was so difficult for no reason. The pop quizzes were frequent and difficult. Make sure you're always paying attention and taking good notes because she moves super fast. You don't even start talking about the Civil War until the last few days. The papers are long and hard too.
She may seem strict at first, but if you really engage with the materials, take good notes, and participate in class (especially in book discussions), it's really an awesome course. Also, all pop quizzes are open-note & there are 10 throughout the semester. I would recommend this class, but warning it is a bit of a harder introductory course.
Professor Heyrman is a very nice lady and is very knowledgeable about history. Attendance isn't mandatory but is required to take her pop up quizzes. The pop quizzes are worth a big percent of your grade and if you aren't good with pop quizzes I wouldn't recommend this class because if you do bad on the quizzes it really affects your grade.
I'm graduating, and I took Hist 158 and Hist 152 with her my sophomore year. Im coming back to write because she was my absolute favorite professor. I CANNOT RECOMMEND HER ENOUGH. Weekly went to her office hours for fun and she always answered my questions about additional info I sought. People who've said she's a tough grader didnt go to her class
She's a very nice person. Just be ready to get called on in class, and there are lots of readings to do throughout the semester. The 2 "exams" are written papers and there are in-class quizzes throughout the semester. The quizzes are open notes and taken in groups, but they still are extremely hard. I think my group failed most of them.
In four words: She needs to RETIRE!!! She expects more on her exam essays than what is listed. Lectures are long and heavy. She makes jokes about her old age and how she starts forgetting things. Never answers questions directly. TA is no help either. The only good thing is that quizzes are in groups. But not everyone will do the EXCESSIVE reading.
great teacher overall just very lecture heavy.
She's very sweet and knows how to teacher but she can be very strict and rude. Personally I liked her in the beginning but I do not appreciate her pointing and picking you out based on what you wear. She will also get into your face which was rude. Her classes were boring. Graded on quizzes done in groups and essays.
You can tell that she knows her stuff, but she is the type of professor your high school teachers warn you about. Long lectures with little notes, tons of readings, and she's very old-school. Her quizzes are group quizzes, but they're very difficult and often don't actually cover the material she said they would.
She has pop quizzes very often so attendance is mandatory , she picks on each person in the class and forces them to answer questions , she is unclear in lectures often and its very boring
I have nothing but bad things to say about her, I took HIST105 with her last semester and came back to express my frustration with how awful she was. She treats you like high-schoolers, her lectures and slides aren't helpful, and she's one of the toughest graders ever put on this earth. Stay away from her.
Meh. She's ok I guess but definitely has glaring issues. Lectures are mostly fine but she can be a little strange and she'll oftentimes randomly decide to single people out for no reason. Asking her something personally feels like she's being somewhat condescending towards you. Also, your grade is largely dependent on random pop quizzes which sucks
The whole "calling on people randomly" is seriously rare and really only happens in discussion when everyone is required to participate. She wont penalize you for not immediately coming to a certain conclusion or having the same perspective as her either. She likes a variety of ideas. She's very understanding and very knowledgeable as well.
class was dependent on group quizzes that had difficult questions
She is not a bad professor and personally I found that as long as I copied all the notes from her slides down I was able to do well on the quizzes she gives (usually one every week). She loves participation but do be careful because if she learns your name she may begin to single you out in class. Overall fine teacher and I'd take her class again.
Even if you copy all the slides her quizzes are nearly impossible. She goes so fast, I have never had such a hard class.
Unless you have to take this class for your major, do not take it. None of her lectures are clear, and even if you copy everything down, it's still ridiculously hard to score well on quizzes, in which she gives every week. Lectures are extremely hard to follow, and quizzes you don't receive any partial credit for on her "choose multiple answers".
would not take class again she is a tough grader took me time to get the hang of her quizzes, you get a quiz every week about the lectures but she goes very fast
If you can deal with difficult grading and a harder professor, then she should be fine for you. She definitely has her favorites and will only grade you high if you raise your hand in class.
This was my lowest grade in college, and it was a 100-level class. I genuinely do not know how a student would get an A in this class. I took it in fall 2022. The weekly quizzes were brutal. The questions would be unnecessarily specific on concepts that were barely mentioned in class. This was by far the hardest class of my collegiate career.
