Awful. Whatever is taught in lecture is forgotten, and the materials she presents are often flawed. She'll stop in the middle of the presentation to fix it, and overall it just feels really jumbled. The TA's are pretty good. Her projects are kind of tough, though-- but she grades them pretty easily, so that's fine. :/
Worst Prof so far. There is no point in going to her class. Just show up for the Recitations. I never went and i got a 4.0 in the class.
Was an ok teacher, didn't directly deal with the students. The TAs did everything. You don't really have to show up to her lecture, and she'll even tell you that, but the recitations are mandatory, but easy. The TAs go over everything. EASY class.
Tests throw you a curveball, they are actually pretty hard.
Useless class. Lack of an actual professor. She needs to learn that lecturing is NOT teaching. Rarely helps with anyone that needs it. She seems to have a "I don't understand why you don't understand" attitude.
Pointless class. She is terrible at lecturing. She refuses to wear a microphone and so it is near impossible to hear her. Cannot take control of the class. Not good at answering questions. Just a bad experience overall.
Worst math teacher I have ever had. She lectures to over 200 students and only cares about getting through all the slides. Cannot answer questions, acts like we are children and gives out a project that is supposed to be "realistic" but is completely not due to her requirements. I learn more from my TA than her.
Worst teacher EVER! She only cares about getting through slides and the TA teach us everything. She does not answer question well or hardly at all and acts like "why don't you understand this?" The main project was not realistic AT ALL because of her requirements. She has been by far the biggest waste of time.
My worst teacher so far. Extremely rude when someone was attempting to turn in a field trip letter. Though the class is very easy, she does not give us time to take notes on the important concepts. Most people have good TAs but unfortunately, mine was not. The class is an easy GPA boost, but be prepared for somewhat of a hassle.
If you are a slow learner, terrible at test taking, and have a ridiculously busy schedule, stay away from this teacher. The class has over 250 people in it, and for whatever reason, she does not have a microphone, so unless your schedule is so free you can sit up front, you're screwed. The lessons aren't effective and the lab policy is very unfair
Refuses to wear a microphone so she is impossible to understand. A rude woman who spends 80% of the lecture telling you how much your life is going to suck because of all of your debt from student loans. Plus all of her TAs are unintelligible foreigners.
Terrible teacher. I suggest to all friends to take any class but hers. She jumbles the material and is incompetent. Also, refuses to wear a mic. Overall, she seems to be on a powertrip and resentful over the fact that she has to teach basic math. Not at all an educator. Don't know what her problem is; thank God she hires good TA's.
Don't know why so many bad reviews, she does not deserve it. A good dedicated teacher, so what if she won't use a mic?
I agree with the reviewer below. She is a dedicated teacher, so claims that she is rude or powercrazy is hooey. Her teaching assistants are not 'unintelligible foreigners', that is just so unkind and untrue. Who writes these things and why? Do not pay any attention, Prof Horsmon, you are doing great and most of us can appreciate it.
Not the best teacher I've ever had, thank goodness for my TA otherwise I wouldn't have understood anything.
could speak a little louder, else NP
BETTER THAN OK
Cannot fault, a good teacher.
i really want to thank this teacher for doing her best to help and make the course both helpful and fun, if only others were the same.
The course was easy but the tests were extremely tough for me, and took me more time than I expected. But I could not give her less than 100% for teaching style and willingness to help. DG
Terrible, she makes you buy a textbook missing vital info because shes the editor. Your TA will be your lifesaver if you take this class. Very unclear, doesn't care about students or outcome of their grades. You'd do better to keep an old high school text book than buy the one she recommends. good luck if shes your teacher.
It just isn't true to say that Prof Horsmon makes you buy a text-book of which she's editor. There was only one student claiming this in 1140 and now it has been put on RMP. Does not mean it is true, as Prof Horsmon didn't make any plug. You are free to use any text-books you want. Good sincere teacher did not deserve this.
Some did not like her, but I feel she did her job well. She explained everything and was slow to flip through slides. Lessons were concise and to the point. Difficult to get an A because of group grading, but information is easy to understand.
The class is 'EXCURSIONS IN MATH' and that is exactly what this teacher gives. Like an excursion, she does not go too fast. If you are looking for rapid-fire teaching, flipping through slides at 100mph, then 1140 is not designed for that and Dr. Horsmon does not give that. Cannot fault her for doing just what is promised..
Awful teacher. Does not care about students at all, you're only allowed to miss 2 class periods and if for ANY reason you cannot attend class when there is a practice round you cannot make the points up and same goes for lab; although 2 grades are dropped from lab work and practice rounds. Overall, not helpful, but the TAs are GREAT!
Lecturer more than teacher, but very clear and helpful.
Very level-headed teacher, never scatty, recommended by a student who likes math
90 % . Would give 100 % except that her tests are real hard both in content and length.
Why is she teaching in an lectue hall? Very quite and won't use a mic! Not helpful, condescending. Not a good teacher.
good teach, that is the only thing i can say negative, that her voice is soft in the bigger rooms, she needs to talk L-O-U-D or use the mic or other ways adjust.
The course is called Excursiosn but it is more close to Race, lot of material covered. It is not that difficult material, but amount is issue. You must attend because if you have fallen behind I think impossible to catchup. Prof H herself is brilliant, all enjoyable and much math learned.
Horsmon is unclear in her instructions, unaccommodating if a student needs an extension/help, and is apparently convinced that her students place her (gen ed) math class above their major requirements. Not particularly polite, not helpful, but her TAs are generally wonderful.
Found it hard, worked hard, was expecting a B, got an A, yay! I am beginning to think I should have taken up math instead.
Ms. Horsmon is a very kind woman, however the class is structured horribly. Make sure you know the material well and can write fast. the midterm was only 45 mins. Everything is rushed, practice rounds, exams, etc. Heavily relied on the tutor lab and my TA. If I didn't have a good TA in this class, I don't know what I would have done.
Not helpful at all. If you need math 1140, then I would suggest GRCC or KVCC. Does not care what your problem is, leaves all the real work to TA's and has an unrealistic idea of how the class should be. Hardest 1000 level class I've ever had. If you need this class to graduate, go somewhere else if you are not a math person.
Easy class if you just LISTEN. I really don't know how others dislike her or this class. All you need is to put some effort and think. Easy class, good teacher. Just use your brain and you will be fine.
She was okay. She loved to talk and give a lot of useless examples. the Exams are a little hard but that's about it.
There has been no effort made to make a professional & structured environment in which to learn. The whole class is too crowded, unorganized, and eventually people begin to take on the attitude of the professor who really couldn't care less about the horrible class structure, and makes no effort to change.
Worst professor I've had at Western. She flies through everything, and couldn't be less helpful! I would recommend everyone to take this as a Credit/No Credit instead of Letter Grade. She's terrible! Too bad too, because the material COULD be very beneficial if she actually knew how to teach...
Does not help people at all. Makes the class SO much harder than it is. The math is basic algebra. But the way she presents it makes it seem like vector calculus.
Aweful teacher. I do not usually rate professors on this site, but she was dull and not helpful at all. She would not allow the t.a.s to accept homework if the student was late to the lab even by 30 seconds. Expected everyone to get it the first time. She went extremely fast for people who like to write notes and you need them.
Very poor teacher. She doesn't explain anything well at all, and acts as if everyone has already taken and fully understands the class. I would highly recommend switching out of her class if possible. She gives review guides before tests, buy when she gives us the test, it is nothing like that review at all.
Uses a stupid book, doesn't help out at all with questions
she gives you 20 problems a week and if you get 19 of them right but skip one you only get 2/3s overall grade
shes..... pretty bad. lol If you do 30 hw problems and get one wrong, you have like a 1/10. i dont get it. and she spends most of the class complaining about people talking when usually, no one even is.
i just want to warn everyone before they take a class with her....run don't walk. she gives countless useless examples and even after you complete an entire homework assignment, if you get one wrong, just plan on failing the assignment.
I have already taken calculus, I was just retaking the course before calculus II for better understanding. She made the topic more confusing. I never understand her examples, she grades homework, quizzes, and exams far too harshly, and now I will probably have to retake the class to save my GPA because I can't reach the standards that she expects.
This woman really needs to be fired. If you get her switch out as soon as possible! The only kids that passed her class took AP calc in high school. She teaches very fast and makes it almost impossible to retain any knowlege. Also any question you ask her is greeted by a snide remark that makes you feel quite stupid.
She is an awful teacher. She goes way too fast, and doesn't explain things well. You will have to learn all the material from the book and tutors.
I am already terrible at Math, I was excited about taking this class and maybe leaning a little bit, but NO worst class ever! Impossible to get a good grade. If you can take it with ANY one else, do it!
There is no Horsman it is Chris Horsmon (1288982)! And she is a great teacher, clear and painstaking and kind. Never made a hurtful remark in my hearing.
Very fast and very accurate and very good. I thought I would find higher calculus tougher but Horsmon made it a breeze.
This class doesn't have to be as bad as people say it is. The TA's are great and staff the tutor room several days weekly for extra help. Make sure your homework and practice round averages are high! Also, use the cheat sheet on your exam to your advantage! You guys can do it- I've always hated math and received an A. (She also put in a curve!!)
EASY CLASS IF YOU WILL JUST LISTEN!!!
Plan to teach yourself. USE TUTOR LABS!!! She made it clear that having class during office hours was, "not her problem." Reviews for exams are outside of class time. Expected to use a book that wasn't even a textbook to understand. Grading very inconsistent. Class doesn't need to be as hard as it was.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. The way she grades homework is illogical. She is teaching a MATH course and doesn't even know how to grade papers. She also just loves to make things way more complicated than they really are. Her in-class examples and explanations have absolutely NOTHING to do with what's on the homework.
Yeah her lessons are tough but that is because maths can be hard, if you want the easy ride go choose something else instead of blame youre own inadequacy on a good prof.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This teacher is useless, and inconsistent. Take regular calc instead of engineering calc, you will learn much more, and have a better grade. This teacher believes that you don't deserve to pass unless you "have mastered calculus". That won't happen with this lady teaching.
Engineering Calculus is what it says on the box and Engineering Calculus is what she teaches. I've heard grumbles about the subject but I think this is the nature of the subject itself. I am now confident I can solve most problems in EC.
I deserved to pass and I am sure I will, thanks Prof Horsmon.
Not the very best teacher I've had, but still excellent. Good TA also. Bad choice of textbook.
Horrible! Just horrible. I've never struggled so much in a Math class before. It doesn't help that the class has 250 students but even with 4 TA's there isn't enough one on one help. When I asked Horsman a question about something I was confused about she was rude, told me to talk to my TA, and he didn't even have an answer for me! Avoid Her!
The class does not have 250 students. And the number of students is not the fault of the teacher, rediculous. Prof Horsmon does a very good job given that there are many students there. Always clear and ready to help. Wish other staff were more like her.
Unnecessarily hard grading
I agree it was tough love but I benefited from it.
For the first time I can say I really now understand calculus. Thanks.
made engg calc come alive for me
She is not a prof but a p/t instructor but is friendly and helpful thankyou
Calculus is never an easy class, but indeed, Mrs. Horsmon made me understand some concepts I never understood. Recommended if you really want to learn calculus.
By nature, this class is challenging due to the large lecture. However, TA's will save you. Make sure to attend labs and ask questions! Practice rounds are generally the second meeting of the week. If she did them the first day, no one would come the second. I had an 88, but got an A with the curve. This is college, people. It requires effort.
I am grateful that I was one of the few that passed. If I asked upper class mates I would have never taken her class. She didn't get the homework back to you until after the exam. Guess how the exams fared without knowing how you did on homework. I will never ever take her class again. I'm lucky that I don't have to. Just plain horrible.
Bad teacher avoid!!!!!!
I liked her teaching style. Tough but helpful.
doesnt reward or tolerate laziness, good for her!!!
Hard but worth it
Wildly unhelpful; would not explain her example work, would not review homework or tests, would mark students down on *required* shown work without explanation, and her favorite quote was, "It's not my problem", when adressing classroomcurriculum troubles. Lots of self-taught studying, not much in terms of help.
Taking this class for Engineering, she is mostly clear during the lectures, can interrupt her and ask questions if you don't understand something. Office hours are open to anybody, she is willing to meet outside of office hours if you need extra help. Hard tests, but it's college calculus meant for engineers, Requires work, definitely recommend her
This teacher is always willing to help if you reach out to her. She really cares about helping you understand the material!
not a very good professor and loves his calculator but your not going to use it on the test half the time.
Hard Class.
Chris is awesome! Tests are easy and she always adds 10%. Homework is online and weekly labs are helpful! Only 3 tests the whole semester.
She reads word for word from her slides, and if you have a question she will just reread her slide. Her exams are awful the class average was so low on the last one, I did her study guide that took 8 hours and still got a D. Also she starts her class "on time" which is five min early, and if you're even a min late don't show up.
This class is lecture and lab based. As far as a teacher overall all she does is read of slides that are already available to you. Best piece of advice is go to the TA sessions if you are struggling. Keep up on E-learning and Pearson My math lab. Practice exam are somewhat like the actual exam.
It's a lecture based class with a lab. The material is very resourceful information but you're not taught how to evaluate the problem and solve from there. You're taught how to do the problems based on a section with a calculator. Which isn't very good. Once the exam comes you don't know anything because key words in the homework won't appear.
Definitely ask questions outside of class. The exams are nothing like the rest of the homework/quizzes, but as long as you get A's on everything else you'll be fine. Going to class will help you pass. I had more problems with my TA than Christine, honestly. Only unclear grading was for the project. As long as you work hard, you should be okay.
She goes through lecture lightning fast with lots of material covered and few examples that are useless in exams because it's nothing like that. The way she grades, she nit-pick EVERYTHING. If you are not 100% perfect, your grades will drop drastically.
There were so many things included in quizzes and tests that were never covered in the material preparing students for the quizzes and tests. Christine was disrespectful to me and condescending when I asked for help. The online systems being used for all of this are confusing and there was no explanation them. Do not take any classes from her.
Chris was willing to meet outside of class if I had a question & needed clarification. Other than that, she was rude and didn't respect her students, resulting in a lack of respect from them to her. If a student walks in on time or early, yet she already started class, she'll blame you. She is nice if you speak to her 1 on 1, but rude to the class.
Do not take her classes. She is rude and disrespectful to the class.
Dont take this class. You will set yourself up for failure.
Professor extremely rude, especially to those who show up right on time or a little late and calls them out inappropriately. Class overall seems unhappy with grading and lecture. Tests impassible and homework is all online and frequent. Do not recommend taking class with her if possible, class is seemingly set up to fail.
Very rude to class.
There's a ton of online homework, and it's all graded on correctness instead of completion. The tests also tend to be significantly harder than the class material and labs. The prof was kinda odd. She would stop class to tell people walking into the giant lecture a few minutes late that they were distracting... as she stopped her lecture.
She is excellent at clarifying things that might not make sense.
She read off the PowerPoint for all classes. Not once did she teach how to do certain problems
The lecture had 150+ people in it but no one showed up because there was no point. She spent all lecture on three or four example questions that had nothing to do with the homework. There were three exams, and they totaled 65% of the final grade. Homework is all online, and not easy. One on one was helpful though, and she did make to meet with us.
