A great professor, in general, who will help you do well if you want to. I assume she's pretty busy, because she shows up to the 8am lecture looking like she maybe got 2 hours of sleep like half the students, which can make the lecture unclear; however, just take advantage of her office hours and you'll be fine.
she is an amazing teacher! even though the class was at 8 am, i could actually learn something. her tests are ok, but her notes help a lot. take her class!
Beware of this class. Dr. Hughey will try to help you however her lectures get confusing. Also, if you go to her about your grade be wary she will tell you you will pass her class and miss lead you when in reality you won't. If possible take another professor.
Definitely try and take another professor!!! The students ended up correcting her at least once every class it seemed. She's not very clear in teaching and confused me every class. Avoid at all costs!
Do not take her class. Every class, I would take pages of notes only to get an email after saying she messed up. So now I have learned all the incorrect information and am screwed. You'd be better off learning off the book and ignoring her in class. She is a nice person, but who cares. It's college and it's all about learning.
Take Augstine or Tam
Dr. Hughey is a really good professor. She REALLY knows what she is talking about and I think she has probably read previous comments on here because she definitely does not mess up in lectures hardly ever. Her tests are fair, but she does try to trick you. she gives her test from the previous year to study by--very helpful.
Hughey assumes students have prior knowledge of chemistry, which hurts the ones who don't. Class averages on exams are low, and judging by the way she talks about it, she faults the students (may or may not be true, seems to me like averages are a reflection of the teaching). I would have avoided this class if I had known what it would be like.
god awful teacher, practically had to teach myself chemistry
She's a pretty good teacher. The class is hard, but all Gen Chems are - it's the nature of the course. She does her best to explain things well and I didn't have a strong chem background prior to her class but she made things understandable.
Hughey thinks that students have prior knowledge of chemistry. I did not, so this class was extremely difficult. First test is seemingly straight forward, second test had the lowest average. I recommend using the learning center if you have her. But try to avoid her!
Dr. Hughey is an awesome lab professor! Her "lab reports" are just written summaries and she definitely realizes the amount of work that should go into a class that only gives us 1 credit. She's super nice, easy to get along with, and definitely knows her stuff. Take her!!!
She's difficult, but pretty much all chem classes are. She isn't very helpful, but she definitely isn't the worst chem teacher.
Chem 131 is a hard class no matter who you have. Hughey was great and she is good at explaining things. Weekly workshops are also helpful. Class has a lot of assignments and requires a lot of studying to do well. Very available for help, wants you to pass! Clicker questions are helpful and lectures and study guides always given.
Dr Hughey is a great professor. I had her for chem 131. Chemistry itself is hard, but she always makes herself available to answer questions. There are a lot of grades in that class, but she drops the lowest exam, homework, and workshop grade. If you don't understand something in class I recommend going to her problem sessions they help a lot.
READ THE BOOK BEFORE CLASS if you do the lectures make everything clear. She does a great job explaining difficult concepts, and her workshops suck but really drive home the material. Make sure you know the exceptions to the rules because they will be on the tests, but she covers them well in class. As for Hw its the same amount for all 131 classes
THIS IS A HARD CLASS. That being said, Hughey made it not so hard. Clear cut lectures. Do the homework, go to class, read the book and you'll do fine. It's a LOT of work outside of lecture but any gen chem class is.
Dr. Hughey is an incredible chemistry teacher. CHEM 131 intimidated me, but she made it SO clear. I ended up getting an A- in her class, but I did have to put in the work. Do practice problems, review the book, and study her powerpoints. She always is available for office hours & holds study sessions. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class
HORRIBLE PROFFESSOR. Sooooooo easy to fall behind. Way too many assignments, doesnt explain things well, is unorganized and not super approachable.
Hughey is not the best teacher, she is really unorganized and not very clear. She just had a baby so shes all over the place, doesn't really do alot to help your grades. TONS of pointless assignments that don't count for much at all. WOULD NOT TAKE!
Hughey was very helpful, and really good at explaining things. 131 is hard no matter who your professor is but Hughey is one of the better ones. The tons of assignments that people complain about is the same case in all the other professors as well and also she held review sessions that helped a lot with her test and understanding the material
I would say Dr. Hughey is a great teacher, shes very knowledgeable of the subject. The test are multiple choice, only a few trick questions. But the class itself is not suppose to be easy you are expected to do the homeworks and understand them, if you don't ask her and pay attention in class. If you slack off and don't put effort it wont go well.
Professor Hughey is so great! She posts her powerpoints online before class and she explains everything really well in class. She also records her lectures if you miss class. Her tests aren't that bad as long as you do the practice exams and textbook problems because the test questions are very similar. I would definitely take her again!!
Hughey is awesome. I was terrified to take CHEM131, but she made it less difficult to understand. She explains the concepts and shows videos and she truly want you to do well. There is homework due every class, but that is the same across all chem131 classes. You do have to put a lot of work in, but if you do you will do well.
I had never taken Chemistry before taking it with Dr. Hughey, and she told me to expect it to be a lot of work. Couldn't have been further from the truth. A third of the class dropped, I should say, but it's been pretty easy. Posts her lectures on canvas. She provides practice tests that give a good summation of test material.
Dr. Hughey offers so many resources because this class in general is very hard. She is extremely organized and definitely provides you with everything you need to succeed. The key to doing well in Chem131 is all in how hard you're willing to work for it because there's a lot of homework and taking shortcuts won't benefit you.
Dr. Hughey is a great professor. I went into Chem131 with a big head and expected it to be easy. I was very wrong, I got an A in AP Chem in high school and barely pulled out a C here. She is willing to help if you go to office hours and make sure you GO TO CLASS because she has clicker questions that help you understand and save your grade.
I took Dr. Hughey for the first part of Gen Chem and though the material was difficult, she really is a great teacher. You cannot be afraid to go up and ask her questions if you don't understand the material. The tests are difficult, but if you take the time to study for them, you'll be fine. In the end, I finished the class with an A-
Hughey is actually phenomenal! She really cares and gives so many resources to helps students succeed. Go to her problem solving sessions or office hours, study, and do the homework and you should leave with at least a B+
131 is basically high school chemistry so if you did well in that this class should be easy
Dr. Hughey is a fabulous professor! Her lectures are great, but the material is tough, even if you did well in high school chemistry. There are 4 exams that are 55% of your grade, but she drops your lowest one. The exams are tough but very realistic if you thoroughly study and do the assigned practice problems when they're assigned.
Dr. Hughey is a great professor, honestly. As long as you read the textbook beforehand lecture is easy to follow. The key is to at least do some review beforehand. There are usually a few assignments, but they aren't too bad and they can help boost your grade, half are just for completion. Tests are average/hard, but not terrible if you study well.
Dr. Hughey is great for lab. It's easy as long as you read the instructions and come ready to work. The reports are really just written summaries of the labs. Weekly quizzes to ensure you read the lab and only 2 exams. Always willing to give feedback during and after lab. Strict about sig figs, but will check if you ask. Lab rarely lasts full time.
Best chemistry professor hands down. Hard material but she did a wonderful job breaking it down and making it understandable for students. Also, she's hilarious and makes lectures enjoyable. Requires hard work but she makes it possible to do well. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Hughey is a great professor and is very clear about what she expects from her students. If you have taken AP Chemistry in high school, this class will be pretty easy. Her tests are fair and she always gives practice exams the day before. I highly recommend printing out her PowerPoints before class because I found that to be super helpful.
Dr. Hughey cares about the students who care. If you go out of your way to ask for help she is very understanding and willing to do what she can. Her tests are very fair and there are lots of review opportunities including practice exams to help with your studying. She tries to keep her lectures interesting. Definitely reccomend!
Dr. Hughey is a good teacher. If you intend on making an A you will need to have full mastery of what she wants you to know. Her lectures go by very quickly and if you haven't reviewed the information on the lecture it is easy to miss info. Also, she did not curve this class like some other teachers do frequently. Prepare for class and study!
Overall good teacher. Lectures are helpfull at getting core concepts but to get a good grade you need to be prepared to dedicated a lot of time.
Provides intellectual lectures, group workshops every week to review material, and puts up all powerpoint slides, which she records the lectures onto, on canvas.
There is a lot of online homework, but the majority of your grade is made up of Exams, which are 20-30 questions. If you do poorly on the exams, you basically do poorly in the class. Most of the work you have to learn yourself. That said, Prof. Hughey is super sweet and cares about her students and is willing to help as best she can.
All the homework was online and you had to stay on top of it to do well. Pay attention in lecture and go to class. Study well in advance for the tests and go to tutoring and outside help also. Dr. Hughey is a very good teacher, she wants you to do well, but you have to put in the effort.
liked her as a person, but difficult for her to understand what you need help with
Do the homework!!! It is worth 10% of your grade which doesn't seem like a lot until the end of the semester when every point counts. Pay attention in class since most of that material was on the test. Would recommend as one of the better CHEM 131 teachers.
Great teacher! Lectures help you understand the material. Tests are challenging, but if you study and do the practice problems, it is not a super hard class.
Great teacher. Will go the extra mile for you
Tests account for a large portion of your final grade but she drops your lowest test grade. A lot of daily online homework that usually isn't that hard. She cares about her students and wants them to do well. Lectures aren't always boring. She really tries to make them interactive.
Dr. Hughey was my favorite prof from last semester! She does a lot of examples in class really goes out of her way to make sure you understand the material. With that, if you don't do the homework and aren't trying then she isn't sympathetic. She's a huge help during office hours and will work with you if your schedules don't match. Take her class!
Dr. Hughey was a good professor. The class was lecture heavy and tests made up most of your grade. However, she does drop your lowest exam grade. The only issue was that during the lecture, she didn't give enough time for you to do the example on your own. Do the homework and go to class! She wants you to do well but you have to put in the effort.
Dr. Hughey is not the worst chem professor you could have. Overall I would say she was very nice and would help you if you go to her office hours. Much of the learning in this class you do on your own through interactive readings. There are 4 exams and a final (she drops the lowest exam grade). Really just go to class and be prepared to study!!
Dr. Hughey was a great professor. She went over many examples during class. There is a lot of homework, but if you don't do it, you will be confused later. The mock exams are usually very similar to the real one. She also drops the lowest test grade (out of 4). She was one of my favorite professors this semester.
Dr. Hughey is an excellent teacher. If you show up to class and try you'll do well. She explains things really well and cares about her students actually understanding the material. Definitely would recommend her for Chem
Dr. Hughey is a great professor for chem. She breaks everything down and makes chemistry a little bit easier. Chemistry overall is just a difficult class BUT if you have the choice to take Hughey, definitely get her as a professor!
Very kind and funny lady, however she is a bit disorganized and if you need a professor who teaches in order with notes and gives you notes this is not the professor for you. She requires lots of homework and that is her version of readings. There is not a textbook. However your worst exam is dropped.
I had the type of lab where you use LabArchives and have to make your own procedure instead of being given one. We didn't have a midterm/final/quizzes but we had to write up a procedure and data page every class. Big lab report that had very little guidance, but if you put in an effort and work with your team you can get at least a B+.
Dr. Hughey is an amazing teacher. She wants everyone to succeed, there is a decent amount of homework but if you do it you won't have to study as much. Attendance is part of the grade and she explains in class that not everything in the textbook is on her exam so it is definitely worthwhile to go to class. She is very helpful if you reach out.
Dr. Hughey is amazing. Chemistry within itself is pretty difficult, however, she makes it worth while. Homework due before every class. Workshops every friday. These help your grade so much. Go to the mock exams if you wanna do well.
Take any other professor if possible. Makes easy labs much harder than they actually are. This is due to her not knowing what the lab is in the first place, telling us to use the wrong equipment, and consistently contradicting herself. Doesn't know how to answer questions, and when she does, usually gives the wrong answer and confuses herself.
Chemistry can be a challenging subject, but Dr. Hughey wants everyone to succeed and provides plenty of resources to do so. Do every mind tap assignment, go to every workshop and go to her mock exams if you want to do well. 4 exams make up 55% of the gram but the lowest one is dropped and the final is worth 30%. The remaining 15% engagement.
She was an amazing professor that really cares about her students! 100% would take again.
Typical chem class, Hughey is nice and approachable and she wants to help you understand. She will answer any questions you have and make sure you have a string grasp on the content. Mindtap can get annoying b/c some assignments are time consuming but if you do them it helps soooo much.
Dr. Hughey makes a difficult subject a bit more enjoyable. Her class is tough, but shes very clear and the content is straight forward. As long as you show up prepared and study, you will definitely pass this class.
Dr. Hughey was my favorite professor this semester! She's incredibly kind and truly cares for the success of her students. She made CHEM131, a mildly complicated course, enjoyable and hilarious. The class is mainly group work, so you teach yourself the majority of the material. I would highly recommend taking Dr. Hughey for this class!
Dr. Hughey is a great professor. All CHEM131 classes are reverse classroom, but she takes the time out of the group work sessions in class to go over things that we don't understand. Do your mindtap, watch the videos and take notes, and PRACTICE!! She is very funny and nice and is welcoming to all students.
Dr. Hughey is a great professor who is very intelligent. There is a stigma around chem131, but this class is basic algebra and minimal memorization to get an A. Dr. Hughey, drops your lowest test and rounds up. Every test is fair and you will never be surprised on an exam.
She is a very good professor and is willing to help both outside of class and while in lecture. Very approachable and friendly. This class requires lots of time and studying, so be ready to bring it and put lots of time in. There are lots of supplemental work in addition to exams.
I was not a fan of the flipped classroom used by the 131 department. I found it very unhelpful as the work shown in the videos didn't always align with what the were doing in class. Dr. Hughey was very accessible outside of class. The most help I got was when she went over missed questions at the beginning of class. Do the midtaps and practice lots
I just had her for lab, but she was nice and a good professor!
Dr. Hughey is great! Standard level of challenging for a chem class, and shes overall just a very nice professor.
This class has done so much harm to my emotional wellbeing! You will have to teach yourself everything and do a HEAVY load of homework every! single! night! One week we had over 30 assignments due, each with many questions. Dr. Hughey does not seem to care that almost everyone is struggling (she laughs! LOVE that for her.) She will not help you.
If you want chemistry class to be easy and want to do well, and its your first time ever taking chemistry, do yourself a favor and dont take this professor! Tests make up most of the grade for the class too.
Worst class so far at jmu- unbearable amounts of homework and useless lectures. You do group worksheets every single class that are completely useless- she expects you to learn everything on your own time outside of class. If you have hours of free time every day then take it, otherwise your grade will suffer.
This class seriously deteriorated my mental health. This professor has good ratings but once you get into it you're gonna struggle. Not only does she find it entertaining that we're failing but office hours were canceled before final exams?? She raced through content and the only time we were hands-on was with group work which did not help at all.
She expects students to learn and understand the material fully outside of class. She does practice problems in class and when nobody participates she just says that we are "getting restless" when we are all actually so lost. If you take her then plan to go to tutoring+PASS sessions. Barely has time to breathe in class she moves so quickly.
She canceled her office hours two weeks before the final because she had to do something to hire new chemistry professors??I saw that students in my lab who had different professors were much more prepared and understood the concepts in much more depth than the students who were in Dr.Hughey's lecture with me. They had better resources than we did.
Hughey is no doubt a wonderful professor and person. Chemistry is a hard subject, but she makes it bearable and does everything she can with the limited time she has to make it make sense. I would suggest her to anyone who's nervous about this class and wants a professor who is down to earth and clear to understand.
Dr. Hughey's class was very inconsistent. She only started posting her blank slides after fall break. She gives one attempt on some practice quizzes and unlimited on others. She speeds through her slides with minimal explanation. If you are good at independent learning, you'll be okay, but if you rely on explanations in class, avoid at all costs.
This class is just a hard class in general. No matter what professor you get, it will be challenging either way. You will need to put in the work for this class to get an A. Yes there are some weeks where there are more homework than others but it's manageable. Take the initiative and ask for help! She has no problem helping students!
This is a chem class, so it's not gonna be easy no matter what professor you have. Overall, Hughey was very helpful and provided a lot of resources to review for all the quizzes and the final. Also, her lectures are very easy to understand and helped me a lot with the more difficult content. Would highly recommend it, but you need to study a lot!!!
The course is just hard in general but Dr. Hughey is personable & understanding. LOTS of work outside of class because it's a flipped classroom. She speeds through her lectures, but if you ask questions she really takes time to explain. Overall, good professor, just a hard course. If you're in a large class, get to know the TA's, they'll help.
This professor doesnt care about the wellbeing of her students. She goes through slides really fast and cancels her office hours before exams. She also assigns tons of homework at once due in one day even though her students have other classes to work on. If you email her, expect a condescending response the next day.
Prof Hughey is sweet but her class is difficult. There is tons of hw due all at once(3 times/week). CHEM131 is a hard course in general, but she made it slightly better by putting her students in groups to work together - this was nice because I can't stand profs who don't encourage students to interact. She's better than other chem profs tho sooo
Lots of homework outside of class, Flipped classroom setup so you do the modules and learn the material outside of class and she goes over it in lecture. Group work heavy.
You must know how to do the class material before you even come to class through this ALEKS program. You have to learn everything independently because she does not lecture well and rushes to get through class. She does provide a lot of out-of-class strategies to get you the help you need, but you do group worksheets in class that are confusing.
Beginner's chemistry is a very rushed course no matter what teacher you have. This teacher assigns Pre-Class learning activities on ALEKs and then goes over the content in class before doing a worksheet with a group you're assigned with. Worksheets are graded by quality of work done not completion. She designed her class for no one to fail.
TAKE HER! Dr. Hughey is absolutely amazing. She cares about you so much, and I cannot express how much she wants you to succeed. Go to her office hours and get to know her, she will do everything to help you! She explains everything very well and sincerely to help students understand! TAKE HER!!!!!
I liked Dr. Hughey as a lecturer as she went into a lot of detail to explain concepts; however, ALEKS is used and she had a different way of teaching than ALEKS and it made learning confusing. She also didnt add ALEKS under the assignments for canvas so you aren't notified when you have an assignment due so you have to stay on-top of it.
Very caring professor who teaches chemistry effectively, lenient with homework deadlines and really wants everyone to succeed.
Hughey does not prepare her students well for exams at all, which make up 50% of your grade, not including the final which is another 20%. The exam questions are designed to trick you, and you could think you know the material well and still bomb the exam. I do not recommend taking her.
She is a nice professor, but her lectures are rushed, and there are not many example problems. You complete in-class worksheets that are helpful for review. She only sticks to one way of teaching a concept, which is difficult if you have learned it another way before.
Chemistry can be pretty difficult, but Dr. Hughey provided a ton of resources to help. There's a lot of pre-class and post-class activities, but if you actually do them and read the textbook, it helps a lot. She lectures for most of the class, then you do a worksheet with your group. She's a very kind person and tries to relate to the class!
Dr. Hughey is more concerned about students having time to complete the attendance worksheet instead of making sure the students thoroughly understand the topics. There are 5 exams and they're all unnecessarily difficult. This semester I had an A in all other classes and labs, which I believe says more about the professor than it does about me.
she is so sweet and she really wants everyone to do good, replies to emails fast. Chemistry is very difficult, but she provides numerous resources, such as slides, practice quizzes/tests, and even a study plan for the final exam. shes so sweet and really cares about everyone.
