She was by far the worse professor I've ever had. She grades as if all her students were English majors, and she gives really terrible feedback on essays, while your grade depends on the 4 essays in the class. The started at capacity and only about 6 of us showed up for the final.
The class is heavily graded on the 4 essays that you have to write and not much help or feedback is given. She is a hard grader but is clear about what you need to do to get good grades on your essays. If you aren't a strong writer this class may be difficult for you because there are very few lectures. Class is mostly busy work and discussions.
She's hard, but if you go to her for help, she gives step by step instructions. She's also pretty hilarious.
Shes hilarious, and she makes everything super clear.
Her papers were hard but I went to her for help for each of them and got a As on all of them.
Always willing to help.
She's a tough grader, but she's fair. Like most professors she will get a bit political at times, but she's pretty nice and does her job well. I respect her more than most professors I have had.
Professor Iskander has been probably the best English instructor Ive ever had. Her assignments are interesting. She makes everything relevant, and shes crazy nice. She let me rewrite 2 of my essays which let me get an A in her class. Shes awesome. Take her.
You write a whole lot of essays in this class but if youre looking to become a better writer then she is the perfect professor. Shes a tough grader but always willing to help. The content of the class was extremely interesting ; however, if youre not an English person, take someone else. Shes so nice and made the class enjoyable.
Very helpful professor. She is a hard grader but tells you EXACTLY what she is looking for. If you follow her guideline on essays, have TLC check it and ask for help when needed, you will have no problem getting an A. Is more than willing to help anytime. She is funny and tells stories to help students remember key points.
amazing professor, definitely recommend taking this class if you are pursuing an English degree
She is a kind teacher. She is willing to help when you need it. Professor Iskander is lenient if you are sick and she will give you an extension. She's funny too! I would defiantly take her again!
Shes awesome.
HORRIBLE. STAY AWAY. Her online class had WAY too much work and she had way too many expectations like her students didn't have other classes or a life. Not communicative.
Easy, basic assignments but she does grade pretty tough on essays.
Ridiculous format for an Online course. The assignments for the week are not available until midnight on Sunday. Usually something due on Mon,tues etc. Hope you don't have a full time job, and hope you don't work non traditional hours because you will be trying to play catch up by week two! No constructive feedback, except your wrong! Avoid !!!!!!!
I had Iskander's online class for both 101 and 103. The class is straight forward. Her assignments are clear, and she's pretty okay taking late work. The thing that made me love her classes is the reading and material are all super interesting. Her 103 class is on happiness, and I don't know of many teachers having you analyze J. Cole and Kid Cudi.
DO NOT take take this teachers english class. If you have a full time job, you are taking other classes, you're a parent and have a personal life, take this class and you will not. You will be drowning in homework and bad grades. She is AWFUL with communication and grades HARSHLY. Find a better teacher that cares about their students growth.
She is a tough grader and offers little feedback for improvement. Emailed her in the beginning of class to open assignments early due to full time work. She never replied. She posts all assignments late Sunday night and this is extremely inconvenient for those that seek flexible online. I wish I had a better experience with another teacher.
Clear cut class. She gives detailed feedback and makes her rubric available. From day one- you just need to read her assignments to be able to pass this class.
The material of the class is what makes it interesting. The format is a basic online class. Shes good about taking late work, and I rewrote an essay which took my grade from a C to an A.
Ive gone to Christine Iskander for office hours and was thinking shed care about helping, when I get there she wasnt enthusiastic about helping and just said to go to a tutuor. Ive sent messages shes never responded too, as well as asked questions that I never get the straight answer for. Shes good at teaching but is the harshest grader.
This class has a great syllabus, although I would not recommend this professor. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt- but she isn't interested in giving critical feedback, modules are posted late, and she is a harsh grader. This professor has poor communication skills and has trouble answering questions directly.
Shes really approachable. Her grading is clear and pretty easy. I dont like the fact that she publishes assignments week by week, but the class is organized very clearly. I also just really loved all the reading.
The worst professor. She is not communicative at all. Her instructions are not clear. Her feedbacks are just your mistakes and she doesnt offer any help for students success. Do not take her. Textbooks are ridiculous and time-wasting materials. Extreme high expectation from her students while she doesnt instruct how to correct our mistakes.
She is the best professor I've ever had! She shares her own stories. She really cares about her students. She even helped me on my essays for other classes. Take her. She's awesome.
I love this woman. I loved her class. One of the best classes i've taken at COC. She teaches you to be a better person as well as a better writer. She grades hard, but she lets you rewrite essays. By the last two essays, I knew how she graded and got easy As on both those essays.
I loved everything about this class. Literally, I would look forward to it every week. The teacher was sweet, and funny and I would walk out of class every week having learned something new. The first essay was hard. You have to define happiness, but Iskander gives good feedback, and she has a clear cut rubric. I also really loved the atmosphere.
I took Professor Iskander for 101 and 103 and I loved her both times. Shes really funny, and always takes the time to really explain things when I or anyone else ask. 103 has been over for a month and Im still thinking about the lectures and reading. Happiness her class.
She seems to really make it tough for just an English 101 class lol. I overworked and stressed myself over this class. Lectures are HEAVY. She is a seriously tough grader; we had a philosophy paper to do... If you're up for it a lot of work and reading, good luck.
Professor Iskander's 103 class is AWESOME! The whole class is based on the theme of happiness. Her paper topics were relevant and include different mediums as sources which were a lot of fun. The main grades are on the papers. I really feel like I'm a much better writer and critical thinker after this class! Her teaching style is refreshing.
Listen, I'm not a fan of english and I'm mediocre at best. This professor makes learning english fun and easy. She's there to help you with your essays. If you listen and participate in class, I'm sure you will understand the material. Her lectures are great! And she offers extra credit.
Christine is awesome. I dont think I realized how good she was until I took other professors and realized that shes an absolute gem. Shes a tough grader but her essays are interesting and she gives extra credit. I got an A and I dont even like English. Take her.
Follow her instructions and you'll get an A. She's also really nice about late work.
I loved this class I love her and her stories. It felt like a family by the end of the semester.
Okay in the middle of all this corona crazieness she's been the absolute best. She's understanding and accepts late work and she let me redo assignments I didn't do well on. She's also hilarious and her class is based on happiness which has really given me a lot of perspective in a time where life has pretty much sucked. Love her. Take her.
Its like you cant help but become Christines friend. Shes such a caring professor. I got a C on the first paper, then I reviewed it with her on zoom for like an hour. Fixed everything and turned it in again and got an A. Shes a no BS person, is super lenient where it counts. I wish Id taken her for 101.
She likes long thesis statements, and she loves semi-colons. Dont get creative. If you read the prompts closely she pretty much spells out how you should write your essays. Ive gotten As on all the essays so far and its just a matter of doing what youre told.
Laid back, super nice, prof, and a really thoughtful class.
I took this class in Spring 2020 during the Coronavirus and we switched online about 1-2 months in. First, I didnt like that the class is centered around happiness. All three essays are about happiness. She lays out how she wants your papers. Online she assigned so much homework, which didnt equate to how much work we wouldve done in person.
For an English class, this wasn't so bad. I took her online and she assigns work relevant to the essays she assigns. Essays hold the most weight in the class, besides the last project of the semester but they were very easy. Skipping some homework will not hurt your grade too harshly because they are each about 1-10 points where the essays are 100.
Honestly she made me love English, she is sweet, amazing, kind, and honestly overall an angel from heaven! She will guide you step by step through all 4 essays that are due throughout the semester. Easy A if you do the work. ASK when in need of help she will gladly guide you! 4 quizzes and 4 essays 1 of them is a timed in class essay. TAKE HER!!
She's an actual gem. The essays aren't hard, the content is great. Some of the discussion assignments were dry because few people took it seriously, but when I talked to her on zoom, she was so insightful. Loved her class and love her.
sad to say worst professor I've ever had by far. First assignment was a 10 page paper based off of the tone of a 1.5 page report. Talked about herself all class (3 hour class), had us doing busywork ("peer editing" peoples papers from other classes), and bragged about how many people drop her class. I would give a 0 if I could.
I just took Christines summer 101 class, and it was such a pleasant experience. Everything was clear and logical. Her essays are spelled out clearly. She looks at outlines and tells you exactly what should and should not be done. I didnt particularly enjoy the peer editing, but I see the value. Shes understanding and very human. 10/10 prof.
I took this class during summer 2020 and she was a great teacher at most. There was a lot of assignments which I understand it's a lot but they all connected back to the essays which were very helpful. I loved that she went through our thesis statement and topic sentences because I need help in those areas and it would help me improve on the essays
lets be honest, no one likes english, but shes the one teacher who made it enjoyable.
i took both her classes. Her 103 class was so much fun! its three normal papers and then an annotated bibliography. we analyzed hip hop songs and music videos. she had us thinking about the true meaning of happiness, and im still mulling it over in my mind till today. essays are straight forward, nothing too fancy. shes just a genuine person.
She forces you to think in the class. All the papers are about happiness and what it really is. The first two papers are pretty short and the last one is an 8 page research paper. All the readings are short and sweet just like her.
Prof. Iskander is amazing. Took her spring 2020, 4 papers, and a portfolio assignment. heavy reading but only 2 quizzes with easy logical answers. honestly easy A if u can follow basic instructions. She is very clear on her expectations and walks you through the essays guaranteeing an A.
This class was a breath of fresh air in the middle of all the crap of this year. Prof Iskander made us talk about stuff that was so relevant to whats happening in the world right now, and she is so understanding of people's situations. I love her and I loved this class.
Will make sure to give u good feedback to improve your work. Kind yet condescending. Reasoning > Writing skill. Effort is extra credit. If u only did the essay-related assignments in the class and got a 0 for everything else u would end up with an 89%. That means the 49/76 assignments are 11% of your grade (twice the work.) probably better at 103.
This class is centered around the idea of happiness. It sounds like it would be easy, but that is not true. There are three essays and the last essay is a combination of the first and second one. The main thing that I highly disliked about this class is that all the assignments are worth 1 point. The quizzes 10. The essays are between 75-150 points
Dont bother taking Iskander, youre better off with a different professor who can do their job right with teaching and helping out students instead of sending them to TLC. She has high expectations for everything in this class such as assignments and papers but takes points away if you dont follow her instructions.
I met with professor Iskander almost once a week, and she was so helpful. She talked me through my outlines and made me a stronger writer. Her class is clear cut as are her expectations, but shes sweet about everything and let me turn in things late when I told her I was overwhelmed with work.
Iskander took forever to respond to emails (questions/answers became later irrelevant) or did not bother to at all. Most assignments are 1 or 2 points so overall grade relies heavily on essays. Took forever to grade things & feedback is mediocre at best. Spent a lot of time with TLC tutors going over my work. I'd suggest taking another prof.
Oops. Nvm. I got an A. Apparently the annotated thing was easy.
Is this a joke? I just read these ratings. Christines class was easy- I think I ended with over 100% because of extra credit. Its so thoughtfully put together. All the small assignments build up to the essays which are worth the majority. Im 100% a better writer because of this class. And the music was great.
Easy. Fun. Light class. I would do the work weeks ahead of time.
I love proff Iskander she was so understanding when I got sick and let me turn in everything a week later and she helped me write me second essay about King which got me a A. The book we read was great but long.
solid english class. essays are simple and everything is logical. you essentially need just need to do well on the essays to pass the class and the rest of the assignments are easy.
She's a kind professor but wants her essays written a certain way. I completely bombed the first one with a 30/100. She let me rewrite it and resubmit after meeting with me to discuss why I was given that grade, and what she expected from each essay, which was so helpful! Resubmitted and got a 99! Just make sure to follow the rubric for essays.
Do not take this professor's short term class. She was very disorganized, & grading criteria on essays wasn't clear. She does allow you to resubmit essays for a better grade, but overall unprofessional. Would not take this professor again.
Do not take this professor. The whole class just revolves around doing assignments about happiness. I took her for online and we had to write three essays. The first one was about what happiness means, the second was how to obtain it, and the third was what happens is and how to obtain it. you can only write so much about happiness, it was stupid.
I was never good at English as I moved here when I was 15. She made me love it. Shes pleasant and understanding
Her English Composition course is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. She gives anywhere from 1-4 pointless assignments every Tuesday-Thursday (and sometimes Mondays and Fridays as well). The course load was ridiculous and the assignments were only worth 3-10 points. Essays are all the matters. Unclear feedback and condescending attitude.
Took Prof. Iskander for a 5 week class in the winter session. There were 3-4 assignments per day that were all pretty easy, but time consuming. All of these assignments led up to the essays that we had to write as well. She's always responded quickly to emails so that was nice. If you have questions, ask her, she's helpful and gives clear feedback.
I took her english 103 class 100% online. The class is very organized in terms of assignments, each week has the same layout for the most part. There are 3 essays, all about happiness. As long as you follow the rubric to a T, you will be fine. But, if you get a bad grade, she doesn't specify why (only complaint) Overall, she's a good prof.
easy to pass but quite disorganized essays are most of the grade
Good Prof. Lots of essays 12 to be exact 1 anotated bilbography. This class will take up most of you're time. STEM don't take this class, you'll be more overloaded than you already are.
DO NOT TAKE HER SHORT TERM CLASS. She assigned us about 16 or more assignments a week which were all only like 1-5 points and the discussions 10. The grade is based solely on the essays in which she gives you the reading the week of and then assigns the reading for the next essay which has nothing to do with what you are doing that week.
I took this class and I completely regret it! She puts 17+ assignments every week on top of essays, rough drafts, peer editing, etc. The majority of your points will come from your essays, her grading isn't clear and she will mark you down for the smallest things. Don't take it if you're working it'll be a mistake and you'll be overwhelmed!
Took the fast paced English 103 course online. The amount of work was ridiculous. You would get 10+ assignments per week, it was all easy stuff but they could take 30-45 minutes each! Three essays all on happiness, but there is only so much you can write about it. Her grading system for essays do not make sense. All the essays come at end of class!
Prof. Iskander is an okay professor. The assignments aren't difficult they're a lot of work and she'll take down points for little things which isn't great considering the way she explains assignments is very muddled. I had to reach out a few times for clarification, and when I completed the assignment to my understanding it wasn't what she wanted.
70% of your grade will just be essays. Almost daily work which correlates back to the essays but if you don't do them your grade wont get hit hard as the 3 essays are your entire grade really. She gives chances to review your work and is helpful on revision, if you can write decently and convey your thoughts well, this class shouldn't be too hard.
I had Professor Iskander over 16 weeks in the spring. We had an in-class essay every other week but they were extremely easy because she hand-fed us the evidence and arguments to do if you just attend class. She is clear cut with her grading, and extremely caring. I would 100% recommend you take her.
It was difficult to get in contact with Professor Iskander so most of the communication goes through the class tutors. The majority of your grade will come from three big essays centered around happiness yet there is a lot of smaller assignments in between. It is important to follow the essay requirements and you will succeed.
I absolutely love Prof Iskander, I had her for Fall 22. Her 101 class can be HARD if you are not a strong essay writer. There were about 13 essays and like 11/13 were in-class essays. However, the content of the prompt was not hard at all as long as you payed attention, did the homework, and came to class. I would 100% take again
I had her for 101 and took her again for 112 because I loved her class so much. 112 is so interesting and fun, I really loved the material and it only had 3 essays.
Three essays on happiness with no helpful critique, only complaints. I have never felt so discouraged and left in the dark about feedback/grades received in a class. She is rarely available outside of class as well. I do not recommend this professor, AT ALL.
Prof. Iskander is really sweet and understanding, you can tell she wants all her students to succeed and she explains things really well.
great professor! loved her online class. it was my first semester of college and i was honestly pretty nervous about taking her class but i loved it! most of the grade comes from the essays but they are easy to write as long as you keep up with the reading (which isn't very heavy reading).
The structure of this class was very helpful, but this professor genuinely made me lose my passion for writing. I used to actually like writing essays, but the feedback she provided was so condescending and oftentimes rude. She grades incredibly hard and I would not recommend this class. Even if it fits your schedule, do not do this to yourself.
Honestly the class was really easy. There was a few times where I contacted Iskander and just never got a response. Most of your grade will be from essays with all closely related topics. Overall easy class just hope you don't have any questions regarding the work you're doing because you might not get an answer.
Every essay I had points taken off because a "required text" that was not included in the prompt was not in my essays and she refused to elaborate or show me where they were stated. Iskander doesn't do her own grading until the final draft and often clashed with what her TA had graded and changed on my rough drafts. Not bad but be ready to be alone
Gives assignment instructions yet takes lots of points for not correctly following them. Emailed her and have left comments on things I needed help with and zero response it took a sort of angry email to even hear something back. I used to like writing essays but she sort of took that away, I would honestly suggest looking for another professor.
excessive amounts of work, little effort shown by the teacher
Professor Iskander's dedication and pedagogical expertise have greatly improved my critical reading and writing skills. Her invaluable feedback has polished my essays significantly. I highly recommend her course for anyone seeking a high-caliber professor to enhance their writing mechanics.
Prof Iskander is a great English teacher. The hardest part of the class I would say are the three essays she assigns. Basically everything else is group discussion work that she goes over with the class. She gives you extra credit by going to the TLC, rounds up grades by 2%, and the final is designed to boost your grade. Notes are allowed for tests
took during winter. rly ez class w very minimal hw (there were some texts we had to read). pretty light w grading essays. take her if u can! def one of the best and easiest winter classes ive taken.
I took this class online, homework was minimal although there isn't a lot of assignments so if you don't want to tank your grade do all the homework assignments, she provides very insightful critiques on your essays but she is also a tough grader for essays when it comes to your first essays. At times her instructions for essays can be unclear.
I genuinely loved being part of this class. She cares about students, gives helpful feedback, and is very lenient on due dates. I would take this class 10 more times.
I took her winter class. She assigns 2-3+ assignments every day. She is understanding with late work and essays. The feedback she gives is fine: she tells you what you do wrong, but not really how to improve. Pretty harsh grader. Not an easy A, but definitely not hard.
This professor assigns many assignments back to back and doesn't grade or provide feedback promptly. Some of the assignments are meant to help us develop our essays, but she only provides feedback after we submit the essay. It can be quite frustrating to maintain a decent grade in this class. I would recommend taking a different professor.
Very memorable and personable; fun lecture style and she enjoys what she teaches. Lots of assignments and reading required, but excusable due to the nature of the class. Tough grader with essays, but resources are very accessible online. Deadlines are very lenient along with the pacing. Her personality drives the class. Again, very memorable.
Not my favorite class but also not a bad class to take. I was pretty scared to take this class considering it was an 8 week course, but if you truly take and hour or two out of you day to this class you will be fine. the class itself is very interesting with three essays and an annotated bibliography. she doesn't grade things that fast, be prepared
I took her online ENGL101 course. She will annihilate any love for essay writing that you have. You will hemorrhage points unless you are constantly advocating for yourself, which is almost impossible given that she's basically inaccessible through email or Canvas. The class average for one of our essays was a 0 until she opened up resubmissions.
I don't recommend this professor ; don't ever take her she doesn't have clear grading criteria and she doesn't help at all
She was a meh teacher, a tough grader, her comment she puts down sounds rude. She emails you two days later after, and will not help just repeats your question you asked.
The best English professor ever. She is extremely compassionate and treats her students like human beings. EXTREMELY lenient with due dates but still keeps you accountable. If you do well on the 3 essays, annotated bibliography, and 2 exams, you will most definitely pass. There are two days for making up essays and one exam. Heavy but easy reading.
Great professor who cares for the wellbeing of her students and is pretty lenient, despite her tough grading. You do have to put in some work for this class, but she is also helpful and guides you through the essays (3 of which take up 20% of your grade each). Her response times to emails are relatively fast too.
