I don't know how she is in an actual Bio class, but for GSci, she is extremely nice and fair. I would definitely recommend
Very nice woman who is totally willing to help you, but be ready if you take this class. She gives a LOT of assignments, you never have downtime for this class and she grades VERY hard, there is no coasting. Hardest Bio class I have taken because it is so work intensive.
This class requires some work, but the labs are pretty straightforward and expectations are fairly clear. This course is based more on analysis and discussion rather than memorization which could be easier or harder depending on what you are good at. Either way, she is a very approachable, and highly knowledgeable professor.
Great professor. The class has a lot of work by nature, but she makes it enjoyable. Field trips almost every lab with about 3-4 lab reports and group experiment as the final assignment. Be ready to work, but she is more than willing to help if you are willing to try.
I had Dr. May for lab. For it being her first time teaching this lab she was amazing. She was extremely helpful and made sure everyone knew what they were doing. I recommend Dr. May to any other student. If you can take her class and go to her office hours if you need to she's happy to help!
One of the most condescending professors I have ever met. I was so, so disappointed in this senior sem. She will interrupt students in the middle of their presentations, treat us like children, and expect us to participate while she dominates our discussions. Also discourages questions and just really disrespectful. It was a burden going to class.
Very easy as a course, but makes mistakes often, and blames students for them. Condescending/mean on questions.Lecture is same as required reading - but mandatory. "Point reductions" are complete zeroes for the day. Seems very nice and enjoys bio, but goes about it so harshly, turns off students. Doesn't care about what is learned or grades earned.
Really easy material, May just made it very difficult to learn/get good grades. Was condensing towards students with questions and made learning a hassle. Overall, was not conducive to a old learning environment. Did not enjoy material or course.
Dr. May is a brilliant professor. This class prepares you for research at the next level. If you do what she requires and go in willing to work hard to get a good grade she will give you the grade you earn. Two tests, several lab writing ups, a lot of useful field work and field trips, and one final group research project and presentation.
Dr. May is not easy but she is very knowledgeable and a great professor. For the group project two of the students were not doing their part and she let them know it. She was also extremely helpful as I dealt with health issues. Her tests are exactly what she teaches so there are no surprises. I loved her and her class!
Lectures us as if we are one of her other classes (other classes are 300-700 levels), even though we're an entry 100 level class. Moves quickly and doesn't repeat or emphasize important info. You are expected to pick up EVERYTHING mentioned, even if it is once - it will be on an assessment. Grades papers though even though we are new to these kind
her expectations are way too high! and she expects us to be almost completely independent. no help. because a concept is easy for her, she assumes it is simple for us. we are here to learn, not be patronized...
Dr. May can be intimidating, but it is only because she sees your potential and pushes you to reach it. She is an excellent professor who will absolutely help you grow as a student. While her class is tough and you have to put in a good amount of work, I highly recommend taking it because you will be a better student because of it.
Interesting professor. She is very knowledgable in ecology and she is respected in the field. She does, however, pick favorites and it is hard to get out of the doghouse if you do poorly in her eyes. She is patronizing and expects you to become a field biologist from this one class. She is particular and picky on her assignments. I wont take again.
Dr. May is an excellent teacher, holds students to high expectations, grades fairly, and is always there to help you, helps find jobs/internships after grad. Test are based of lecture powerpoint's and figures. Labs are outside with take home assignments. She wants you to succeed, and is willing to help with anything she can. ClassFinesse
Dr. May is a great, caring but if she doesn't like you, you're kinda screwed. Very work heavy! She is great at assigning six things at once and not very understanding that you have other classes. Honestly you will learn a TON though!
I loved Dr. May's class, I am disappointed I will not be able to take another one of courses. She is very helpful and truly wants everyone to know and care about the subject. I highly recommend taking her or atleast get to know her.
Dr. May is awesome, if you try hard you will do well. This class was a lot of case studies which is a hands on way to learn which I loved. If you email her she will always respond quickly and answer your questions. One long project on an endangered species, a few short papers. Mostly reading and talking in groups in class. Great class 10/10.
She clearly knows what she is talking about and tells you exactly what to know. However, she can come off rude with how she says thing. Sometimes she'll interrupt you when you're trying to ask question or saying anything. She's a good teacher but not the nicest person.
This class was very interesting! I learned a lot in a short amount of time. Your grade is based on attendance/participation, in-class work, and a final presentation/infographic, which were not bad at all! May is quite clear about everything and very fair! She is a really nice professor and makes the class time fly by.
If I could put the opposite of caring, I would. This professor has no regard for how overwhelming classes can be online. If you have a heavy schedule AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Work in this class feels like busy work and is not worth your time at all.
Some people may consider this class as a heavy workload, but the work isn't difficult. Dr. May is very specific about what she is looking for. Has a good amount of case studies, small papers, and an infographic group project. This is a much more engaging class for learning as class time is used for discussion. Highly recommend!
Very nice and approachable. She wants to help you do your best. Only one quiz and writing assignment every week. No lectures or meeting period. Hard grader.
ISCI104 with Dr. May is an interesting lab class for learning knowledge in a specific area. Took a 6-week course online and she is very responsive and clear in emails and gets back to you right away. Bit of a tough grader but she is clear in what she wants from assignments and gives feedback.
Lots of reading/writing, but the content is not difficult. Style of the class reminded me of high school at times, with HW/readings due before class. You need to be able to speak up in class. She will try to move the discussion along and this sometimes leads to not everyone getting to speak. If you don't come prepared she will not be forgiving!
Took this to get my lab credit out of the way and it was the most annoying class. Hardest grader, unclear rubrics, expects you to do things that arent on the instructions and will deduct a lot of points. Takes days to respond to emails and waits till the assignments are graded to get back to your questions. Not worth it.
Unclear grading criteria, she does not explain assignments. She also asks you to write notes for a grade and then judges your notes. Not only do you have to attend every class but if you don't email her 2 months in advance you will not be excused even if you have an excuse. If you have any sickness at all, postpone it because she does not care
Dr. May is a good person as well as a great educator. However, she makes this course difficult for almost no reason at all. This is a Gen Ed lab credit course designed around natural hazards, and she literally milks all the content and expects us to look up youtube videos on how to do certain assignments. Don't take this class jsut because 1 credit
She actually sucks and avoid her at all costs or you will actually want to drop out. so much work due every monday and also have to watch hour long movies that actually suck. DO NOT TAKE HER !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Group work every single day, wont let you miss one class of will drop your grade 4 millions points. Does not care if you die and come back you should of been to class. Unclear grading does not give extensions, if she hates you you are done. Very passive agressive, told me everyone has struggles when I was depressed. If you are not a stat major drop
BIO 103 with Dr. May has been great! There are a good amount of assignments but many are in-class. She does attendance polls so definitely don't skip. I found this class to be really interesting for a GenEd and she seems genuinely excited about science. She may seem a bit harsh with grading on major work but sometimes you can submit revisions.
The material for the class was very interesting, but she was not flexible/accommodating. She graded assignments a bit harshly, expected you to "struggle" before getting help, and expected you to be proficient in excel graphing. Unless you are a star student, she will not give you a second thought.
Professor May is an overall good and her class is fairly easy. There's a lot of busy work handed out and can be time consuming, especially since it's only a gened class. She is big on participation and attendance as well. 1 Midterm and 1 cumulative final are given. Sometimes she would cancel class and give us asynchronous days which was nice.
She will literally keep you until the last minute of every single lab. Never expect to get out early. Extremely condescending, does not know how to answer any of your questions. Will not speak until everyone's computers and phones are put away. AVOID HER IF YOU WANT TO BE TREATED LIKE AN ADULT! Makes everything harder than it needs to be!
I took this 1 credit class for a my gen ed lab requirement, the grading is ridiculously hard for no reason. For a 1 credit class, you have to watch a lot of hour long videos for the weekly assignments and the grading for assignments is extremely harsh. I would not recommend this course if your trying to take it for a credit.
AVOID so horrible! Assignments are impossible, and hard! I asked to do a zoom meeting for help, and she accused me of not "listening" in class, and thats why I didn't know how to do the work, and basically told me it was my fault for not understanding. I have never cried so hard or felt stupider, just by asking for help! DON'T TAKE! save your TEARS
took this as a 1wk summer course and regretted it from day 1. you have to watch 1 45min lecture, take a quiz, and do an incredibly long and time consuming data interpretation and writing assignment DAILY. all of those together took me HOURS to complete daily. she is a horrible professor who expects way too much for a lab. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER!!!!
THIS CLASS IS DUMMY HARD FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. 1 CRED GEN ED LAB REQ, DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU ENJOY WASTING YOUR TIME WATCHING HOUR-LONG VIDEOS ABOUT AIR SQUARED.
Dr. May is a hard professor for a gen ed class, but if you meet with her for office hours she is accomodating and willing to offer feedback. She can be rude in class because of the way a lot of students respond to her demands in class (lol). You HAVE TO show up to class. 2+ missed classes is drop letter grade. Lots of in class assignments.
Took online 7-week lab, and it was so unnecessarily difficult. She's nice, but makes the class way too difficult relative to how you'd expect - the average for every assignment is around a B-. Take another lab, this one wasnt worth the work for 1 credit.
Professor May is a decent professor. Her classes are mostly lecures are assignment based. Must go to class to take surveys. Exams are only 15% of grade each, with a midterm and final. She can be a tough grader and not leave great feedback sometimes. Would recommend for a GenEd tho.
Get ready to watch and listen to water dry and wind blow for 7 weeks! If you need your melatonin for the day take a couple hours to listen to her lullaby. Sunday you better get your coffee cause you'll be spending your day teaching the class to yourself and trying to not go insane. Make sure your quiet on zoom or you'll get the raft. :) ;)
May makes Bio150L harder then it needs to be. She will speak you like you're a child. Also she may ignore your groups needs during lab and leave your questions unanswered. However if she likes your group she'll spend most of lab helping you out. She grades the essays very harshly while providing little feedback. DON'T TAKE HER!
SO nitpicky with how papers are graded. Very blunt and sometimes rude with her comments. She definitely had favorite groups and it showed. Do not be a minute late to class; otherwise she will take points off, or mark you as absent. Some feedback helpful, other times she'd say "it's your project so figure it out". This class was a headache!
I took a 7 week ISCI104 online; it was a lot of work because the class was condensed but Dr. May was very helpful and easy to work with. She is not an easy grader, but if you put the effort in and learn from her feedback, you'll be fine. It's not an "easy A", but it's not hard either. Mandatory zoom once a week along with an assignment on the topic
She had favorites and if you were not one of them she would not help you in the slightest. She did not grade groups equally. Even if you use her feedback, go to office hours, and ask her loads of question, she will likely still give you a B. She is extremely condescending and treats you like a child. You will never get out early. Don't take her.
Professor May is a good professor and gives clear feedback, however, she expects students to know how to use Excel beforehand and can often be condescending. If you actually put effort into assignments, you will succeed but make sure you're willing to spend three or more hours on assignments due every Monday.
She will find ways to slowly deduct points if she does not like you. She also makes favorites throughout the semester (particularly the annoying people who talk too much and grad students). She can be very passive aggressive. however easy class
She was unable to answer questions and would just say read the manual. She spoke to me in a condescending and rude tone often. She graded things very harshly and offered little helpful feedback. She had favorites in the class who she would spend most of the class talking too instead of helping other groups. I do not recommend taking her at all.
Rude, condescending, refuses to help students. Not sure how she has a job at JMU because she is the complete opposite of everything JMU values. Thinks her 1 credit gen ed is more important than anything else. Threatened to fail me for missing one class for a family funeral.
Dropped her class after two sessions because of how rude she was. Expect to be shamed if, for any reason (including personal, work, or family), you ever have to miss part of or an entire class. Never have technical difficulties because they will always be your fault. And don't ask questions unless you want to feel stupid.
she is nice but like I hateee how fast she be going when we r taking notes, and she doesnt even add to what she already has, its so blunt so idek what we talking ab rn. she takes gen ed so srsly, like we have hella assignemnts but they count more than exams so period bc the assignemnts r boring and long but easyish. I wouldn't take her again tho.
I do not like science, but I had to satisfy the lab requirement for my gen-ed. I am glad I chose this one. It was not easy at first, but she took the time to help me better understand the assignments. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who needs to take a lab.
I enjoy the class, but be warned Dr. May shows ZERO empathy and is not very caring.
Do not take this class. She is so strict on policies and gives no lenience even if you are really sick and you can't make it to class. Will not let you make up assignments even if you are to physically sick to come to class. I got a 0 on a big assignment because of this. Also a lot of assignments that take me a long time to complete.
Very mean. Don't take her. Is so rude towards her students. Does not answer questions when you are confused. Thinks you should be punished for not going to class for being sick or going to a funeral. Won't let you make up work for classes you missed even if you have a valid reason. Lots of busy work that isn't hard but time consuming.
The class itself is not that hard she is just not a nice person and is not willing to help her students when they ask for clarification. If she would clarify assignments lots of people would have better grades. Attendance is definitely mandatory and she does not like late work
Save yourself, she is terrible and does not care about you or how well you do in the class, strictly on if she gets paid or not. Makes the material extremely difficult to understand and goes though each slide of notes in 2 seconds, doesn't post them either. Do the assignments because otherwise you'll fail because there is no way to pass her test.
STOP! This teacher does not care about you at all. Knowing that it's important. She doesn't slow down her lectures for anyone, will not let you correct your mistakes, will not give extra credit, sends rude emails. She will never treat you with respect. Do every assignment because the tests are near impossible because of the way she teaches.
I wish there was an option for a 0 star. So uncaring, I missed 2 classes this semester, one for my brothers wedding, my grade went down 5 points, and one because my car broke down, my grade went down 7 points. I'm most likely going to end with a D+ even though I actually put in effort. She does not care about your grade or you. Giant thumbs down.
She's very irritating and passive aggressive but the class is easy. A lot of busywork.
Very passive aggressive, classes are hard to sit through and lectures and assignments lack clarity. Lots of busywork. Would not take this class or anything taught by her again
Horrible teacher! Did nothing but stupid filler assignments and random videos and was so strict for no reason.
The class itself isn't hard, but the workload is quiet a lot. We had multiple projects that didn't make sense on graphing. I went to her office hours to go over an assignment, and she was condescending the entire time. Also, instead of going over an assignment she made a dot graph about when people turned it in and what their grade was. Don't take.
She's nice but her lectures are hard to sit through, half her assignments are not posted on canvas so they're easy to forget, and the lectures are really long. Not a great experience, but she is still a great teacher!
The class itself isn't overly hard if you submit all your work on time and do it well. She's a really tough grader and will remove points for every small detail missed or done wrong. She isn't an understanding person and doesn't really like to help. There is only a mid-term and final so if you do all your assignments you can keep a high grade.
A pretty horrible professor. Super unfair and not helping at all. It always seems like she never wants you to succeed. Don't miss two or more classes because your grade will heavily drop. Insane amount of assignments and only two exams. Stay away.
This class isn't hard, but she is just rude and doesn't seem to care about her students. She randomly has inclass assignments that are graded & worth a decent amount of your grade. There's only a midterm & a final which aren't weighted super heavy and has graphing assignments where she takes off points. As long as you go to class & try youll be fine.
Passive-aggressive/condescending Strict about attendance. I had to travel across the whole campus in 20 mins, she didn't care that it my tardiness wasn't my fault (it was late & full buses) Grades hard & assigns so much hw. At any given moment there are AT LEAST two *mandatory* assignments simultaneously available any given time, sometimes more
Gave me a 50% on a project because I was out sick one of the days we were working on it even though she gave me an excused absence😛 SHE IS EVIL!!!!
She favors teams very obviously and hated my team for some reason. Made us rate each other anonymously on an evaluation site, which would bring your grade down if your teammates rate you bad. Doesn't care if you have an outside life, you to have everything down when she wants it to be. Didn't even show up to proctor our final exam.
I don't think she likes any1- so condensing. She would tell my team that what we were doing was good, and then take off an obscene amount of points about the specific thing she said was good. Gives no re-dos on assignments and isn't clear on grading criteria even when she grades extremely harshly. When asked, she will not clarify. Take anyone else
not a nice person
The rudest and most condescending person I have ever talked to. When required to meet with her in breakout rooms, not only would she cut you off or not even answer your questions, she continually talk towards you in a nasty tone. Additionally nit picks every single assignment even when you follow the rubrics to a t. DO NOT TAKE HER EVER.
While she was very nice at times, her grading is super harsh and she often would contradict herself in the comments she gives in our papers which makes it very hard to revise. I tend to be very good at Biology, and the only thing saving my grade in here is how well I am doing on the midterm and final.
1. I asked a question about an assignment in a meeting and she gave me some rude, snarky remark about me not paying attention. 2. She posted a video lecture on Canvas instead of a meeting once. She set it up on Canvas so you wont get the participation grade if you didn't watch during the lecture time. She dropped my grade 10% for this 'absence.'
This class was the worst experience with a professor or teacher I've ever had. She is so unbelievably rude, and she doesn't listen to a word you say. She is so condescending and looks down on you like you're an idiot. You can be right about something, but she'll cut you off so much you won't even be able to get a sentence out. NEVER TAKE HER!!!!!!!
I absolutely adore Dr May. This was my favorite class I've taken at JMU, and my favorite professor. She's sincere and kind, and truly cares about her students success. I recommend only taking this class if it's something you're interested in, as it requires a lottt of time outside class, but if you're interested in the topic it's not that bad.
If you don't already want to off yourself, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Insanely tough grading for a GenEd where most of her students are not Bio majors, and her class will make sure they don't ever want to be bio majors. Endless graded assignments. Hopefully, none of your family members pass, because if you miss, your grade will drop by a letter.
DO NOT TAKE. She's a very tough grader. The platform you need to purchase for your assignments uses AI to grade you. If you miss a class, it majorly affects your grade and there are no excused absences even if you can't physically come to class. You will get ignored. She is very condescending and rude.
She's a very nice teacher and the class itself is pretty interesting, but the amount of homework for a genED is absolutely insane. I have less homework in some of my 400 level courses. One other nice thing I will say is she usually lets you out of class like 20-30 minutes early every time, doesn't make up for the absurd amount of assignments
i LOVE dr may so much, and i LOVE this class. She cares deeply about her students and really wants you to pass. There's a few big projects that require quiteee a lot of time, but if you're interested in conservation they're manageable. I couldn't recommend her more,100% take her.
Try to avoid if you can, but you'll probably make it through fine if you attend pretty much every class. She will take off if your assignment isn't perfect and she makes up for not being a very interesting or good lecturer by showing videos for 1/3 of every class and assigning more work than most other classes you'll probably take.
The pros are that May is passionate about bio, really wants participation, and is very knowledgeable about the subject. The cons are that she assigns a lot of work, some of its busywork like watching a 2-hour podcast and taking notes when it barely relates to what we're talking about, grades pretty hard, a little rude, and unwilling to negotiate.
Worst professor at JMU. I emailed her because I was extremely ill on the morning of an exam and I physically could not go to class and she basically told me tough luck and failed me on the exam, which led to my grade dropping so far down, I could not bring it back up in the 2 weeks left we had of class. She was rude and unwilling to work with me.
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews and I'm really happy it did not stop me from taking this class. I thought she was very lovely and meeting in the breakout rooms were very helpful and she was always open to answering questions. If you put work in, it's a really easy class. I would highly recommend taking. Really great professor.
This professor is genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. She comes off the first few weeks as super caring and nice. Don't fall for the tricks. She is so rude, changes her grading criteria whenever. Do not even bother. If you are sick, she will drop your attendance grade down to an F. Horrible experience.
