Honestly the class is a little too easy. Nice one to take if you're a freshmen and need to ease into college etc.
she is nice but her lectures are pretty boring. even though her lectures are boring her tests are extremely easy. i barely even study for the tests and got A's on all of them. most of the info you need can be taken from the chapter questions she assigns. you could not show up for class but do the chapter questions and still do good on tests
She's a fairly easy teacher. Make sure you show up for class and do the easy but time-consuming hw and you'll do fine. You'll do even better if you can write a descent paper. Her lectures are useless (i usually play games, sleep, or do other hw) so the book is your best friend. She reads the actually test Qs to the class for review prior to test.
Extremely easy...show up to class the day before the test. She goes over the entire test and answers. Easiest thing in the world. Her lectures are boring but tests are easy so it's kind of a trade-off. If you're looking for an easy class I'd definitely recommend her but if you actually want to get something out it...try to get a different teach
Very easy class. Her lectures are quite boring, as she tends to just read off the Powerpoint slides.
reads you the test the day before. almost guaranteed to ace the tests if you can memorize the answers. lectures are boring but you can screw around on your laptop. participation isn't mandatory BUT she randomly has worksheets (easy) that are worth 10 pts a piece. she grades super easy on the project, just do it and you'll be fine.
VERRRRYYYYYYY easy class. all you need to do is show up every day because there are daily assignments. the kind of assignments where if you show up. you get the points. also she gives all the answers to the exam BEFORE the exam. so how can you not get them all right. and dont even bother buying a text book. you dont need it
Easiest teacher I've had at the university. Don't recommend taking her but if you want an easy class do it. Attend class and attend the "study sessions" you will guaranteed get an A. I had her for two psych courses and the curriculum for both was just about identical and she used the same lectures for both classes a majority of the time!
Awesome teacher with interesting stories to add.. All tests are taken directly off the books website and you're given a study guide before. Suuuuuper easy. The only thing that was hard were the papers, 2 a semester, you're given 10 topics to write about, grading is a little tough, but not too bad if you actually try.
A lot of work for a one credit class. Papers due every week plus in class assignment. Helpful class (it's mandatory for a psych major) but it would be more helpful to meet more than once a week for an hour.
Had her for General Psych, VERY EASY! ALL tests are online and she gives a study guide with EVERY SINGLE QUESTION ON THE TEST WORD FOR WORD. The only bad thing is she really doesn't seem like she cares. Easy A.
Not knoweledgeable
Lack of knowledge, lack of consistency and matter....the class (Discipline and Pro) is Bogus
This class could be interesting if we only had to listen to Professor would actually know what they are doing
This may seem easy for some, however the "teacher"/instructor makes it uninteresting...therefore it is hard to even go once a week.
Dusek-Schilling is make a lot of bragging about her class preparation, when in reality she does not. She is using old slides, outdated. She is suppose to teach you about getting ready for graduate school, however she discourages you from applying. She thought the GRE cost $16 TO TAKE.....
Wonderful teacher! For a science major it's a refreshing break to know exactly what is expected of you and the topics on the test as well as an organized teacher so you know what to expect when you walk in. I loved knowing exactly when things were due with her timeline
No comment
I do not understand how come she is still teaching. Dusek/Schilling is unclear, pompous and the worse she does not know what she is talking about: GRE $16.....Come on!!!
Boredom is the word.....
I wonder why do we pay so much tuition? This class could be interesting if it was taught by someone else....
Take Dis and Pro with sb else...
instructor to be avoided
A little dry at times but got the point across no less.
Everything is based off of powerpoints. All the answers to her exams are online word-for-word. Never even had to read the book to get an A in this class. Her TA's do all her work for her.
This class is a joke I have learned more about psych in my philosophy class. If you are looking for an easy A without having to apply yourself at all take gen psych with her but be warned you will most likely dispise the class by mid term.
EASY A
Schilling is definitely an easy A. You must attend class because she does in-class assignments that add up to a large chunk of your grade, but they're incredibly easy. Her study guides for tests are word-for-word the test questions. Just attend class and fill in the study guides and you'e guaranteed an A.
Had her for dev. psych. VERY easy to get nearly 100% in her class. attendance is mandatory b/c there is almost always an in class assignment. However they are so easy, basically graded on whether you hand it in or not. her study guides are EXACTLY the same as her tests. and all the answers can be found online. buying the book would be a waste.
I had Professor Schilling for two psychology classes. Very easy to get by on little effort, but she is disorganized, losing three of my assignments in one semester (to her credit, she did take care of the situation when I approached her about it). I did not learn much, which is disappointing since I'm a psychology major.
Schilling = A+
She is an awesome professor! She is SUPER easy! Her tests are identical to the study guides. A+ class. The only disappoint is that its SO easy you don't really leave the class learning much. Good professor overall.
I had Schilling for Topics in Human Sexuality. She was extremely helpful with everything I approached her with. One of the most personable professors I've ever had. Class is really interesting, but it's important to go to class because there are a lot of in-class assignments. Overall a great class/teacher.
Take her classes if you want a easy A. Just going to class gets you points that add up to be like half of your grade. If you want to learn, I do not suggest her. She goes over many things that everyone already knows and uses the same assignments for all of her classes. Her TAs do all of her grading for her. Very repetitive.
She does not really teach, just talks about her slides which is all on moodle. If you are taking gen psych with her look at the course schedule, only attend class days that have reflective writings, otherwise it is pointless
She only talks about her self and her life (which gets really annoying). She reads directly from the slides which are all online so no point in listening or even going unless you have a reflective writing that day. She is very disorganized. Also, other professors finals are only that chapter test (not 15 chapters). TAKE WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Terrible teacher. Unclear directions on assignments(which are generally useless for learning). She's very strict about grammar and APA formatting, but she doesn't actually know the correct usages. So she'll take points off for something that is correct. Very easy tests though. Take the class online if you can.
She has no idea what she is talking about in general Psych.. I heard that she is really good at teaching developmental psych though.. choice is yours
She just reads from the slides. Not a hard class at all! Lots of in class points so going to class is important!
Great teacher! Her TA's grade everything so if your mad about your grade its not really her fault, just show up and actually do the in class activity and you shouldn't get less than a B. Also, She wants you to get good grades that's why she does activities. Gen psych and Psych as a discipline are terrible classes no matter who you take them with.
Horrible teacher. She doesn't teach much and what she does teach usually isn't on the test. All of her tests are based off of the book so you practically have to teach yourself everything. If you have to wait to take Gen Psych instead of being with her, I would. I wish I would have known about this sight before registering for classes.
Tests are pretty difficult, however a decent study guide is provided. Sort of a boring class, but the material is interesting. She gives a lot of easy points out which makes it easy to get a decent grade. Attendance is not mandatory but I recommend it because she gives lots of in class assignments for easy points.
Easy class but all she talks about in lecture is about her life and her interest in other countries. Two of the big assignments are on other countries and have nothing to do with dev. psych. She is also VERY strict on APA format when grading but is not very well informed on the actual APA guidelines herself.
One of the most boring professors I have ever had. Very easy to pass her Gen Psych class however.
awful prof. Knows what she's talking about, goes out of her way to explain it in a way to make her look more intelligent and you clueless. reads DIRECTLY off slides, no time for notes. She LOVES talking about herself and all of the things she's accomplished in life, they have nothing to do with class. She is the reason I dropped my psych major.
She puts her powerpoints online and gives study guides for every test. Also she has detailed guides for the papers, all in all very straight forward and easy as long as the ta isn't a harsh grader!
boring lectures, she just reads off the powerpoint. tests are easy, she gives you a study guide of what is exactly on the tests. have to show up to turn in and write reflections. easy a.
If you're fulfilling a gen ed and want a ridiculously easy A, go with Schilling. If you want to actually learn, go with someone else. Almost everything in the course is worthless in-class busywork or middle school level group projects.
Spot on everyone. Easiest class I've ever taken, but I didn't learn anything.
loves to talk about herself. Shes got a military background so shes a tough cookie. lectures are boring, loves to just read off of power point and tell stories on how her life is like what she was talking about. Would never want her as a professor again.
This ended up being a really easy class however I don't feel like I learned anything. Her lectures are long and boring. All the assignments are easy.
Middle school classes were less lacking in substance than this course. Schilling teaches nearly nothing outside the text, and when she does, she gets it wrong. She says things every day that contradict logic and basic science, and has a very questionable grasp of written and spoken grammar. You'll get an A, but you'll feel dumber when it's over.
she is one of the worst teachers i have ever had. Its not a hard class but you better to be ready to do a ton of work in that class because you have so many dumb things you are always doing that add nothing to what your learning. couldn't pay me to take this class again.
The study guides ARE the test. She reads right off the powerpoint for lectures--Boring. Lots of little assignments (i.e. reflective writings). Not a bad person, but not the best professor. She is very intelligent and has a lot of hands on psych experience, but isn't great at teaching. Easy A--Not mad I had her as my professor for a lib ed.
Christine is a funny teacher, but prepare to listen to exactly what is on the powerpoint. She only strays away from the powerpoint to tell you about her experiences working in the prison.
Schilling was a good professor. She wasn't the best, but she's definitely not the worst. Easy to get a good grade in. I've received C's on all my exams, rarely did the in class assignments and few writing reflections and still passed the class with a A-. If you are looking for a solid A, then go to class.
There are so many in-class assignments that you could probably get C's on all the major examspapers and still pass with a B or higher. She's an incredibly easy grader so I wouldn't worry too much about the course papers. However, her teaching style uses too many examples from her life and she has somewhat of an attitude when I asked a question.
She is an okay teacher. I would take one of her classes again simply because she is an easy professor. She provides study guides for tests. Her PowerPoints are totally irrelevant; half the stuff on the exam isn't even on them. She offers extra credit. If it weren't for the in-class activities and writings, going to class would be pointless.
A lot of her personal stories are really interesting, but half of them don't even relate to the subject matter that you need to know for the test. She can be somewhat passive aggressive, but for the most part is nice. Just show up, do the busy work, and you'll get an A.
In all honestly if it wasn't for the daily points from the busy work class assignments I wouldn't go to class and still pass. You don't need to take notes because they won't help you on the study guide. Her study guides are very clear and her tests are super easy. You have about 3 papers and they aren't that bad. It's an easy class. Schilling is ok
Her tests are easy, everything you need is on the study guide. She makes lectures pretty interesting because of her life stories even though sometimes they aren't exactly relevant. A couple big papers but not to difficult. She seems very compassionate.
One of the best teachers I think in the psychology department at UMD. Tests are really straightforward and she truly wants her students to succeed. Very helpful if you go to office hours, and makes lectures interesting because of her past work experience.
Ms. Schilling is one of my favorite professors I've had at UMD. I think she is a fascinating person and I enjoy the way she teaches. Study guides are provided that really help with the test. There are a lot of in class assignments which make you go to class. I will definitely take class with her again.
Super passionate professor who applies stories and examples from her military experience, which is extremely cool. There are a few big papers, and one really big group project, but she is a pretty easy grader. Her study guides are exactly what is going to be on the exam, and her final comes from previous exams. Would take class with her again!
You have to be in class because she gives out a lot of in class assignments. There are group projects, but the grading is not hard. Her tests have study guides which are very specific. If you review, you can easily get a good grade.
Really interesting teacher and relates personal stories to class material. Clear guidelines for tests make it easy to get an A. Would take her again.
You basically have to teach yourself everything. Study guide is helpful. Going to class is pointless but you have to go to get participation and homework points. She tells more stories than teaches... Not the worst, not the best though.
Christine is a bit full of herself, but her credentials give her a right to be. Seems a bit intimidating to approach, but I'd say do it after class. Go to class for homework and in-class assignments, but study the study guide for exams. You will probably have to teach yourself a lot of concepts. Other than that, do what is asked and an easy A.
Definitely a lot of work but it's not hard by any means. A lot of exams and essay's but she gives you detailed study guides as well as straightforward requirements for essay's. A lot of group activities, but they are easy points if you go to class.
Decent professor. Gives a lot of real world examples. You have to read the textbook to do well on the exams but its nothing difficult at all if you just follow the study guides. Going to class is not required but you will miss A LOT of points if you miss more than a few days.
I took Developmental Psychology with Christine and her class was a lot of lectures, group projects, and papers. If you didn't come to class you would miss a homework assignment. She is very hard to reach via email or school forum. She asks for APA format in all of your papers so buy a writing textbook for this class.
She's super awesome. She's really interesting and makes you enjoy coming to class and learning . I took 2 of her classes, Child and Adolescent Psych and also Dev Psych and I got a good grade . Her tests are not bad at all. if you come to class and listen you should pass. She's a great and understanding professor , who enjoys what she teaches.
Prof. Schilling has been my favorite college professor; She has amazing life experience and shares stories with you. Schilling kept me engaged and intrigued the whole class period. It seems like a ton of work at first however she gives you proper time to complete the work. I learned many life skills in her class and would definitely recommend her!
I took Schilling for Abnormal Psych because I liked her a lot for Dev Psych. She does talk about her stories a lot, but I found lectures interesting and enjoyable. A lot of group work and discussions, but if you participate it's easy. Presentations not graded very tough. Exams are pretty easy(exactly follow the study guide, use book to fill out).
I felt like I learned a lot, and it wasn't very difficult. The tests are easy if you fill out the study guide completely and use the book to do so. She doesn't grade very hard on papers or the group presentation, as long as you follow the rubric you should be fine. Lots of group work and discussions. Lectures were generally enjoyable/fine.
She is an extremely easy grader as long as you follow the rubric. There are 6 exams including the final and they come right from the study guides that she gives out at the beginning of the semester. One group presentation and many discussions with the same group. Also there are a lot of small homework assignments that you need to attend class for.
There are a lot of small assignments that are a lot of work for only a one credit class, however they all help with your future careers, graduate schools, etc. There is one exam that is culmulative that requires the book and a study guide is given about a week or two before finals week. One large paper that she is an easy grader on.
Most of Prof Schillings classes are structured the same way, with 3 papers, 5 tests + a final, an individual project and a capstone group project. She is a generous grader, with the exception of APA formatting. She has in class assignments for points as well, so showing up to class is a good idea. Her tests are easy, verbatim of the study guide.
Ms. Schilling is a really easy grader for papers and presentations, and her study guides are basically just the exam questions. Don't bother taking notes--slides are all online and you can search the textbook online to fill out the study guides. Lots of participation points and small daily assignments. Don't skip or you could miss 20-30 points!
Christine is a nice person, but very tough. She gave a lot of assignments/group work that I felt had nothing to do with the class. She also gives a lot of tests throughout the semester and I had to devote more time to this class than any of the other classes I was taking which hurt my studying for other classes. Lectures are never on the tests.
I loved Schilling. It was a super easy class. She does use the textbook for reflective writing, so that's required. Her tests are super easy. She gives you the 50 terms before the test. There are three/four papers, and she is a stickler for APA format. The papers are definitely the hardest part. There is a group project, but it's easy.
She does not teach. She has students do presentations instead of doing any actual work herself. The only thing you will learn from is the book. The class is not online for reasons I cannot comprehend, because going to class is a complete waste of time. She has assigned paragraphs every class that make you show up in order to receive them. Bad Prof.
She doesn't actually teach. Just lectures and lots of note taking. Tells amazing stories though.
She only taught for the first half of the semester, but made sure all of following classes were covered by another professor or guest speaker. She had amazing stories that related to the topics.
Mrs. Schilling wasted the first 3 weeks of the class explaining the syllabus and course calendar before getting into content. She also talked about herself more than actual psychology, and the lectures were usually on nothing that had to do with the upcoming exam. The tests and homework assignments are fairly simple though, so that was a plus.
Super interesting lectures because of all of her life experience but does not talk about what is on the test... Look a study guides and do the extra credit I went up a letter grade because of it! Also use the TAs!!! They are super useful at helping you write all the long hard papers and I got at least 90% on everyone because of TA help
Her lectures were very interesting and were tied to her experiences, but this class requires a lot of reading to pass the test. She makes study guides so you know what will be on the test. Test is easy as long as you read the sections and fill out the study guide.
Schilling's lectures were very unrelated to any of the exams we took, we spent 3 weeks on the syllabus, and she would mainly talk about herself. Would not recommend taking any classes with her.
Okay, so basically nothing she covers in class are actually on the exams, but if you read the textbook, and follow the VERY clear study guides she gives, you should be fine. If you can learn that way then this is an easy A. She's pretty funny and you can tell she really enjoys psychology. I'd recommend her if you don't mind reading.
Ms. Schilling spent most of her lectures telling stories, rather than teaching. The TA's grade everything but the final presentation. There is constant work and the exams are from the material not covered rather than from the stories she did cover. Grading is pretty loose, as long as you do the work. Though, there is so much work..
This professor was great when she was there but was gone due to sickness, she made class very enjoyable and made psychology much more interesting than it is.
Took this over the summer. Lots of work for 1 credit. Weekly assignments consisted of reading a chapter, posting and responding on a discussion post and some weeks, there were big assignments, such as writing a paper, resume, cv, etc. There were hardly examples on how to complete these assignments. Class was basically a diy w/ minimal instructions
loves to go on and on about herself instead of actually teaching. Very dismissive of any constructive criticism. DO. NOT. Take.
I went into this class excited but was disappointed when it came to syllabus. this class is a social science general on developmental psych. we have to write papers on different countries that don't relate to psych. she also has many strict rules and gradings and is hard to learn from in lecture.
Wasted class time, lectures were unhelpful and not related to the topics we studied. Intimidated the class and would not help students understand the concepts.
If you show up to class its an easy A. She gives you study guides for each test that have exactly whats on the exam. In class you 5 point responses that really add up. I ended up a 98% in the class because you get 30 points of extra credit. Overall the class material was really interesting too, so I didn't mind reading the textbook.
The lectures in this class were lacking by only covering a few slides during a 2-hour class. Reading the book is how you do well on exams. The study guides are a near-exact outline of the exams. 3 papers and a 200 point group project. Christine is a really cool person but I didn't like her teaching style.
I'm taking her class now and we just finished week 3 we haven't learned anything and we have a quiz next week. It took about a week and a half to go over her 19 page syllabus. She did a very poor job with explaining the first paper. We have to do research on another culture, I don't know what to do or how she's planning on relating it to psychology
This prof doesn't teach. I am in my third week in her class and she has only done one lecture based off psychology. She doesn't tell you when homework is due. She doesn't explain her own rubrics. She goes off on tangents that have no correlation to psychology. All in all she shouldn't be teaching this class.
Christine Schillling is a nice enough person. people in class seem to find her funny and you might too! However, the way she teaches is no joking matter. Yesterday we spent a full 8 minutes on lecture slides. We have a test on three chapters of material that she hasn't touched on next Monday. But hey, if your time isn't important to you, take her
We have exams every two weeks on three chapters worth of material, except she usually only covers two chapters in class. On the first exam, over half of it was on stuff she never even mentioned in class. She assigns way too many assignments and is not clear on her instructions. We spent the first three weeks of class going over the syllabus.
This teacher was so hard!!! My teacher didn't help us at all and always assigned assignments last minute. You would be better off not going to class and just attempting the homework by yourself but her directions are horrible. Good luck... you'll need it.
First off I need to mention she was in the military and worked in a prison because you will hear that from her 5 times a day. She is an awful professor she does not teach her class at all just expects you to know things. We take tests on material she hasn't even covered, we are taking a test on 3 chapters and she hasn't even gone over all of them
Hands-down one of the worst professors I have ever had. There are exams every two weeks based on three chapters of material, and she almost never actually teaches you everything you need to know. We have an exam in a week and instead of teaching us, we've spent the past two days going over group assignments we turned in a month ago.
This class was by far the most stressful class I had thus far, thanks to the professor that's instructing this course. Schilling is a nice person but she is straight up a terrible professor. She easily gets off-topic with her back-stories rather than teach. We have tests every two weeks on three chapters and not all of the content is covered.
This class consists only of busy work, 3 papers, and 5 exams. It is so much work to learn nothing. There is also group assignments every week as well as a huge project that's due at the end of the semester. She doesn't teach anything that is on the exams. She talks about her life the whole time. AVOID.
Feel like I wasted my time coming to this class, I have learned nothing at all as she just continues to ramble on about literally NOTHING. I am typing this in her class to show you that this class is a joke. Strongly recommend spending your time in a wiser way with a different professor.
This was by far the easiest class that I have ever taken in my life. This class should have been online. Her lectures made no sense and she wouldn't even talk about stuff that would be on the exams. There is also so much busy work. You have to show up to class to get the info on how to do the homework. Just study on your own and you'll get an A.
Very respectful and respectable professor. Her lectures have nothing to do with the tests, however. And she assigns more out of class projects than any other psych1003 professor.
Don't sign up for this class if you want to learn. Class is spent going over homework that is due at the end on semester followed by learning you have a paper due. Lecture slides will be up for a solid 5 seconds before she gets distracted and you never learn what might be on the test. If you want to be drowned in homework and confused this is for u
I am currently preparing to take the second test that she has provided no information on. The lectures consist of her telling us about projects due in 3 weeks and about her life story. This class has in no way prepared me for the tests and I am beyond frustrated with her. If you want to teach yourself the course materials this is for you.
Doesn't go over any content for the class. Instead, she uses class to go over assignments, where the instructions are already on canvas. It's been 2 months in this class and I haven't learned anything from her. There's a lot of busy work too, for group and individual assignments. She'll also assign something the day before.
I learned a lot from this class, but I only learned by teaching myself because she doesnt teach anything (that is on the tests). During class, she would talk about upcoming assignments (a lot of them) and how to do them, and she would talk about herself. She is a really easy grader, but I really wish she would have taught me something.
Schilling does not teach, she talks about her experiences in the military and then about rubrics and that's it. I had to teach myself all of the material on my own. LOTS OF PROJECTS AND PAPERS. Harsh on deadlines. Lots of little petty busy work assignments. Honestly, she does nothing to teach you, you are better off with literally anyone else
I enjoyed my class with Schilling! Psychology wasn't too hard, still challenged me but nothing beyond. Paper topics are actually interesting. Get ready to read the textbook though! Overall I am happy with my class experience and I recommend you take it as well!
sososososososo bad. dont take an online class with her, she does absolutely nothing besides post the powerpoints and expects you to read them and teach yourself. final project has nothing to do with psych. overall waste of time, especially if you actually want to learn about psych
The online course was well organized and similar to most where you tend to teach yourself. She provides a weekly update, setting expectations that are helpful and unlike other online classes. Typically 2-3 easy assignments a week. Provides topics to study before exams. The only downside is a group project worth 20% of your grade.
Miss girl didn't teach a word this whole semester. If you email her with a concern she'll just forward it to your TA. if this class is online you will teach yourself everything. Also she assigns so much home work and papers that you don't learn anything from.
This class by all means was not hard. It is a 4 credit class which may be scary to some, but it is really not that bad. What bothered me is that her TA graded every single assignment, and is very strict on citations in APA. Also do not email the professor about anything, you are wasting your time. Find out what your TA's email is. Self taught btw!
All I can say is UGH. I took a class with her last semester with some completely irrelevant assignments that took up a lot of time. I'm taking another class with her this semester because hey, I need to graduate. The syllabus is literally exactly the same down to the same irrelevant group assignment and papers. Get ready to do a lot of busy work.
I was not a fan. I'm not sure if it was just because the course was online but I would not recommend taking this course with her. There are plenty of other psych professors that are amazing!
Honestly, a horrible teacher so far, you can tell she doesn't do much work besides what she did when first becoming a teacher, all of her assignments are recycled and you can find all the questions to quizzes online already. Very poor teaching style and an extreme amount of petty busy work.
So much busy work and not any actual substance taught during lectures
Honestly a really bad professor. Lots of homework, but none of it teaches you anything. Have not learned anything from this class - the exams are completely unrelated to the homework and no aspect of anything educational is covered in lecture. Lectures are filled with personal stories and information on syllabus deadlines, no psychology to be found
She gives a lot of homework, and has her TA's grade it all for her so she doesn't mind giving lots of pointless busy work. When in class she doesn't actually discuss our content. This is basically a online course that you are teaching yourself. Do not take this class, or any classes with this professor if you are actually wanting to be taught.
This professor is absolutely terrible. She doesnt teach anything, gives loads of busy work, and her assignments dont relate back to the exams at all. She uses class time to talk about her experience in the military, personal stories, and going over things that can easily be found on Canvas or the syllabus. If avoidable, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Christine is not a good teacher. She spends class time talking about herself and her time in the military. When she does lecture it can all be found in the book or does not apply to the homework/exams. Lots of busy work, she is disorganized and often unprepared. If possible do not take this class.
Christine isn't the greatest professor. Constantly talks about her time in the military and shares personal stories. She also gives out a ton of busy work that doesn't correlate with any of the exams. Overall, I honestly dread going to her lecture every day because there's nothing new she could teach me that I haven't found in the book.
I have never had so much homework. All of the assignments are busy work that dont help you learn anything. The test covers things ive never heard of and things we never went over in class. You wouldnt miss anything if you never showed up. Everything Ive learned I have taught myself.
You will end up using the book to teach you all of her lessons, as the lectures will be spent telling stories.
grading takes forever in this class. On top of many assignments, you have to take five tests that you will only pass by reading the book. She assigns 1-2 chapters a week plus 3-5 assignments. You also have to work on a capstone project the whole semester along with outside learning. This is to much for an online class and would be better in person.
She makes you cite your textbook in every assignment even when it is not really appliable. If you put your mind to it, the work is not that hard, it is just too much for an online course to the point it gets overwhelming. This class will take a lot of your time up, so be prepared to work. And getting your grade back takes forever.
Coming from a psych major: find any other member of the psychology department to take this class with. Ms. Schilling assigned lots of busy work each week, had five exams (excluding the final) throughout the semester, as well as a huge group project, two course papers, and unnecessary "outside learning" activities. TLDR: F--k this class lol.
Lots of busy work, worthless lectures, 2 course papers, one 3 page paper at the start of the year, 5 exams, cumulative final exam, big semester long group project. Would not recommend.
Huge part of the course (Capstone project) really didn't relate to what we learned. Often found myself having to teach myself out of the textbook. Gives lots of assignments, a lot of which just seemed like busywork. Exams were pretty difficult. Discouraged students from reaching out to her, and seemingly had her TAs do everything.
She spends class time going over things on canvas instead of teaching the material. You have to teach yourself everything that is on the tests because she doesn't talk about most of it. There are also so many busy work assignments due every week. I would not recommend this professor if you are actually interested in learning about psychology.
I honestly could not say one nice thing about her. She doesnt actually teach anything and just goes off on random tangents during the lectures. None of the assignments relate to the exams and the study guides dont help with the exams.
Worst professor ever. I would rather take a 6 am than take a class with her again. Lots of pointless homework. Lectures are pointless and she never actually teaches anything, she only talks about herself. The class is basically self-taught but she has attendance check-ins. Have not met a single student who likes her. Even her TA's hated her.
I really enjoyed this class. the canvas page was set up well, it was easy to find your assignments. I personally had no issues with the prof, however, I know people who had her in person and said she was awful. I would recommend only having her for online classes. TA's graded 95% of the assignments.
"It is so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible so I give you a one". Her lectures never really taught anything but were just her telling us stories from her life. The study guides never helped and she gave a lot of busywork that had nothing to do with the exams. You have to teach yourself everything. Only take if you're desperate
I took it online asynchronous, but there were SO MANY assignments to get done. (all worth only five points each but much more work than that) you test what feels like every other week (online tho). As long as you turned in all your assignments, you were likely to get an A-but the workload was sometimes frustrating and I don't feel like I learned
Absolute worst prof I've ever had. Spent the first 2 weeks of class explaining her 20 page long syllabus. Doesn't teach anything that is on the exams, rather tells you pointless life stories. Way too many busy work assignments and had more papers to write than I did in my college writing class. Highly, highly recommend taking a different professor.
I highly recommend never taking a class with her. Honestly, worst professor I've ever had. There are so many weekly assignments, that really just seem like busy work, on top of multiple projects. There are also multiple papers that are more extensive than papers I have written in my writing class. The TA grades almost everything.
Awful Professor! I would recommend not taking a single one of her classes if at all possible. There are so many pointless assignments and some that don't even really pertain to psychology at all. I have done so much work in this class and all for minimal amount of points for the time and effort it takes to complete it. 0/5 don't do it to yourself.
This professor does not teach. I am not joking. She taught little to none of the course content all year. Exams covered 50 concepts across three chapters, and you would be lucky if she taught you 3 or 4 of 50 the concepts before an exam. You're going to have to teach yourself, and listen to her tell stories about her glory days during class time.
All she does in class is talk about her past and her time in the military. She gave more essays than any of the other professors in the psychology department and gave a capstone project that (in the semester I took the class) none of the other professors assigned. TA's graded everything and she made attendance mandatory randomly @ end of semester.
There are so many pointless projects and so much busy work, she doesnt grace anything the TAs do everything and they take so long to grade everything, our last paper was not graded until after the final and its brought my grade to an 89.8 which she would not round up
Take this class if you love busy work and being confused. The workload is absolutely ridiculous. MANY pointless projects, group assignments, and Discussion posts (that are definitely worth more than 5 points for how much work is required). Much of the content is self explanatory. Her canvas is a disaster to navigate and all posts are IN ALL CAPS.
Horrible, she do the most. Too many assigned work plus test and group meeting every week to work on something that has nothing to do with anything. She also takes attendance, I wouldn't want to take any of her class again. AVOID HER trust me.
She is a great person, a terrible professor. She had so many critical reflections and for every single one, you needed to cite the textbook, which was hard to connect the two at times. Capstone projects are BIG points and sometimes even small group assignments in class. And had to write 3 papers and what felt like an exam every week
She literally has taught us nothing and the other classes have already taken exams
I would love to complain about the curriculum taught but it has been three weeks and we have not covered any actual psychology. She has spent these first three weeks just talking about her three favorite things: herself, capstone projects, and papers. There is a lot of extra busy work that most other professors will not give out. Have fun.
Do not recommend
Be ready to not learn a thing for the first 3 months. Classes focus on explaining assignments instead of the content needed to understand and do them. There is a ludicrous amount of work for that class that it takes up a massive portion of time. Avoid her at all costs
Haven't learned anything throughout the semester. And for it being a GENERAL PSYCH 1000 class, her work load and unnecessary expectations were ridiculous. She just piles and piles and piles on random work and writings without context as to how they even apply to what we are learning.
Talk about a Psychology class that almost gave me a Mental Disorder. A student had the courage to call her out for her 30,000 assignments due finals week and she tells them, "this is a 4 credit class." But it's also a 1000 class, it's supposed to not be hard!? She talks about her military and prison experience making us always feel like prisoners.
She is not very charismatic. She also reads the slides to you and you learn nothing in the class, you have to teach yourself.
it's only the first week into the sem and she talks about herself quite a bit, her teaching style is not very solid, and there are multiple papers and a major group project. she also has a weird way of using the canvas app and website, as every assignment is in "modules" and it is hard to find what really needs to be done.
Overall I know Schilling means well, but with that being said in class you learn very minimal on the topic of the class. In class included a group presentation which took 20 minutes of class time each day for almost half the semester with how many students were in the class which caused there to be no time for lectures. Quite easy grading in class.
She gets off-topic easily. We have had chapter quizzes which are the answers to the exams, it makes the exams a lot easier to study for. Lots of work was put into papers and in as well as outside class activities. You don't really learn much in class but it is easy to do well.
I think Ms. Schilling is a wonderful person, it's just that she doesn't seem to consider her student's time outside of class. I have never taken a course with so much homework. Everything is very easy, but the amount of assignments and papers take up so much time outside of class. If you don't mind hours of tedious work, it's an easy A.
I think people are just being a bit too sensitive about her, she really means well & it's clear from her stories that she's been through a lot, & that she's a knowledgeable person with years of experience. She clearly states her expectations throughout the semester, just be present as much as you can & you're fine. The class isn't even that hard.
Christine made this class much more than it needed to be. This 1 credit mandatory class took up more of my time than all of my other classes combined. The main grades are a group project which she doesn't help you with at all and 2 big final papers. She makes this class overly difficult and also assigns a lot of busy work which you gain nothing.
Do not recommend this teacher/class! Class is way to test and paper heavy for a 1 credit class. I felt like I learned nothing.
Not bad but there's a lot of random assignments that dont seem to be that helpful
Christine is so much better than she is made out to be on here. She definitely means well and is really experienced in the world of psychology. Just show up to class and be good with contributing to group work. Also, be proactive with the assignments. Especially the course papers and outside learning activities. Not difficult, just a lot of work.
I liked Dr. Schilling a lot as a person and she has a lot of good stories to share, but I did not care much for her class. There was no time to learn the material, you get assigned 2-3 chapters to read and take quizzes on each week. Also assigns multiple papers with only a week or so to get it done. The class is an easy A but so much busywork.
If you see christines name next to a course- do not take it-find something else. She gives way too much work- a lot of papers AND useless projects(a while back me and a friend took UST 1000) and it was was horrendous- two final papers+ a long group project and a whole bunch of homework. take her classes with a grain of salt
The class has a lot of assignments, but Unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Attendance is mandatory, and the professor can get off-topic at times, but overall it's a manageable course if you stay engaged.
SHOW UP TO CLASS!!! Reading the chapters before she discusses them helps because she goes over them rather quickly. Do the knowledge checks and quizzes because they are the exact questions used on the exams. Be proactive and stay on top of everything and you will be more than fine as long as you try. Christine isn't that bad at all I promise!
She assigns a lot of busy work. She allows for a lot of extra credit in class and the tests are easy if you memorize the quiz questions. She speeds through the material, don't bother reading the chapters. The group projects sucked, if you have another option, take a different professor. Too much work for a 2000 level class.
I personally do not like her teaching style, as it feels a little scattered due to the in-class activities, lectures, and presentations that can be in one single session. I think she grades fairly and the material is not hard, nor are the exams, but she can be very fast-paced. The class was not hard, I was just not a big fan of her teaching format.
I have no idea how she is still here teaching the way she does.
Homework every week, not too bad overall. I've had worse. I like her as a person though, she's really nice and interesting.
Although there are SO many papers, group work, and assignments in this class, the test questions are all provided beforehand and there are many opportunities for extra credit. While the professor assigns a lot, the class really is not difficult at all to pass.
this class can be very easy if you study, do the extra credit, and write good papers, at least in my experience. i didn't like her or the way she taught, but she is easy to tune out. i was scared by the "tough grader" notion that some people experienced, and after taking this course i found her grading to be fair.
I honestly liked her and the stories she would tell during class however, the class is very assignment-heavy with group projects and partner assignments throughout the semester as well. Honestly, it is kinda hard not to fail her class with so much stuff in the grade book. There are lots of extra credit opportunities!!
honestly one of the better psych profs at UMD. if you are familiar with how her classes are ran, you'll have an easy time. show up, do the knowledge checks, actually do the think/pair/shares and extra credit videos, and you'll stay above a 90. she actually cares about students as well which is hard to find sometimes. good luck!
Her classes are very easy, there is just a lot of busy work, as long as you get your work done timely, you will do great in this class. I found it useful to get the assignments done as soon as I could. There are so many chances for extra credit, and if you show up to lectures, you'll receive easy points.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Truly insane how little lecture has to do with exam material, on top of that papers that are difficult to write only because the prompts given are very minimal although the papers are medium length. Also quiz security that is better than the actual department of defense. I need her to please get real!
Christine's classes are not that bad. Contrary to lots of these reviews, if you show up to class most of the time, you'll do phenomenally in this class. There is just a lot of busy work, but it's really easy busy work. Don't wait till the day before an assignment is due to start it, especially the papers.
It was more her TA teaching the class than her. She seemed to not care about this class at all. SO many assignments and a ton of papers. Grades were posted a while after submitting things. Once you get in the flow of the class it is easier, but very overwhelming at first. Would not recommend.
She's fine, but she teaches like 7 core classes and all of them have basically the same schedule. Writing two papers in the same weekend because your professor doesn't know how to stagger her assignment schedules isn't fun.
She's... fine, but she teaches like 7 core classes and has basically the same assignment schedule for all of them. Taking two of her classes at the same time was a terrible mistake.
lots of stuff going on. lots of attendance-based points. tests are so easy that I would not have shown up to class if it wasn't for the attendance-based points.
As long as you do the work and actually study, they're the easiest classes ever. I had her for 3 different psych classes. The fact that some students found her classes difficult baffles me.
