She makes class interesting and relates things to "real" world situations.
Makes Psychology interesting
Great professor. Only lecture that I never fell asleep in.
Quizzes are only on lectures. Was very helpful and understanding.
Very friendly and easygoing. Keeps the lectures interesting by realting them to
Wonderful lecturer. Uses great examples to keep it interesting.
Good lecturer, but doesn't review exams until end of semester
Easy in the beginning, gets harder, nice prof
Loves what she does and makes is very interesting
by far one of the best profs I've had; very fair; knows her stuff, nice lady
Easiest class I have taken at GVSU. Wonderful Prof., very clear and friendly
VERY nice woman, everything is clear the class is easy - tests are fair
good teacher, very friendly and knowledgeable. loves to teach, it seems
Her tests were kinda hard, but she was a great teacher. Shes also Hot!
extremely nice prof, tests are difficult, very willing to help
Very helpful and VERY HOT!!!
She knew her stuff well, her tests were a little tricky but gave extra credit!!
Very nice but tests are really hard and very tricky... read 7 times answer once
very nice professor, knows her stuff, hard tests, hard to understand wording
Hardest Test EVER
Very good prof, but MAKE SURE you read the book as well as study notes.
great prof, caring, sweet, admire her
No Comments
Class if fine, tests are difficult, just go over notes and skim read chapters
Very clear professor. Tests are very hard, but she drops your lowest one.
She was very helpful, but the tests are bad. Still, class is easily passable.
Tests were very hard. She was a nice person though. Make sure to ask LOTS of ?'s
hard tests, great prof.
Very nice, clear, and interesting to listen to. Take her, no question!
101 is hard but Smith is a great prof, great stories
Very helpful, make sure to get feedback on papers and study hard for tests.
Was hot back in the day, but I haven't seen her in awhile
this class is remedial...so boring, and the questions are simple. the prof is amazing, but dont take her for this class or you will be bored out of your mind.
extremely articulate. its fun just to listen to her talk...gonna be a fun class:)
She was extremely helpful with the paper, lets you turn in one section at a time to get feedback. Read the book! tests a little difficult
interesting stories, cares alot about students
Genuinely cares about each of her students. Has a way of explaining things so that everyone understands. Take home FINAL!!!
Prof Smith is great! Extremely knowledgable and very well spoken. Makes a tough class managable. Willing to do all she can to help in any way. Whole class is 2 papers & 2 exams - need to do well on all for good grade. Overall good class/ great prof!
A lot of people said she was kinda hard, but if you just go to class and take the notes, the class is pretty easy. She's a very friendly teacher who will relate to the class, and she's really intelligent as well. Explains material well.
Has big essays on her tests, but tells you what topic it will be. If you study and always take notes, you'll do very well. Explains things clearly, and makes class fairly interesting.
I may be the odd apple, but Christine Smith did not impress me. Her sweetness in class is a "put on" and Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde come to mind. I waited outside her office for help for over 2 hours one day and the way she took her stress out on her
You are odd (below). She was extremely helpful and always willing to meet me at times that weren't during her office hours. She really wanted me to understand the material and never lost her patience when I didn't. She was always like that in class to.
hard class, great prof. she makes it as easy as she can...step by step papers, test reviews etc.
Very easy class. She makes everything so clear and if you don't understand, she will use class time or office hours until you do. Exams aren't too bad. Papers are a bit time consuming. She will go through papers with you before you hand them in. Use this.
Dr. Smith is the best professor I have ever had at GVSU. You can tell she actually cares about her students. It is not easy to get an A in her class but when you do, you feel even better because you know you earned it. She is a very kind-hearted person.
I was not impressed by Professor Smith. Our psych. department has plenty of other teachers that are sooooo much better. If you can take someone else do it!!
She is clear and easy to understand. Has a good speaking skills, and can explain a topic to you in many different ways. She outlines what is expected of you in each assignment and on tests. Good prof for a boring class. Highly recomended
Research methods is no fun. Professor Smith makes it a little less unbearable, but I still found it challenging. She tries to make herself available outside of class, and gives her students practice problems in class. She is flexible with the syllabus and due dates as well.
She made what could be a horrible class fun and interesting, helpful and explains things in different ways until everyone understands, good personality and elegant speaker. Tests & paper are challenging but by all means fair. She is lenient with deadlines, use her help on the paper.
she is very nice and is willing to meet with you if you have questions. i just felt that her teaching style was VERY hard to follow. she confused me many times, and when she tried to answer questions, it didn't help much. her study guides suck too. they rarely go with the info on the exams
She is very nice in class, but it almost seems like a fake personality. Exams are easy, papers are hard, and she assigns more papers than exams. Seems to teach to the slow-end, which is good if you're on the slow-end, but discouraging if you're ready to move on.
This is a very difficult class especially if you don't have a good stats background. Prof Smith is very helpful and willing to offer suggestions for your papers. I failed her midterm - and so did a lot of the class. Keep up on the reading. I had to struggle - but I got a C.
very nice and helpful kind of hot in a wierd way
She was very nice and helpful. Her tests were pretty easy if u go to class. The research paper was somewhat difficult and she really wants u to have APA style down more than anything. If u can go to her office hours she will look over the paper and help u with it a lot before it's due.
Nice professor, very helpful...just bad at explaining things. She seems to think we're all psy experts and flies through things. She will explain if you ask but it doesn't make much sense. First paper was easy, second was very ocnfusing. Take her but make sure you ask a lot of questions/go to her office hours.
I enjoyed having Prof Smith for this class but I also enjoyed the subject. She is very easy to listen to, she relates the topic to life and is tries hard to help you understand the material. She is very easy going, and is always willing to work with you if you are having trouble. Go to class, listen and study- you will do fine.
Dr. Smith was incredibly confusing about grading. She assumes that all of us are going into research , and she thinks that we are supposed to know everything about how to write a psych paper before we turn it in. If you want a professor who thinks that we have all graduated take Dr. Smith.
Nice lady, but like the other person said, grading was kind of wacked...my group thought we did great, got good feedback during it, but ended up with a D on our presentation with no explanation.
I thought the class was very intersting. She did a good job explaning things and gave good examples. It was a pretty easy, and I enjoyed the class.
Friendly + a good lecturer; her examples are easy to understand. Having only 350 points (3 exams @ 100 + 1 paper @ 50) for the semester is bogus. The exams and paper aren't hard but her study guides are useless. Book is good; read it to have success in this class. Paper grading was shady - all positive comments but a low A overall was disappointing
She is a very helpful professor, but sometimes she would lose the entire class. Assignments aren't difficult, but group project needs to be very good. I didn't like this prof. Class is not interesting, confusing, and hard to keep track of when stuff is due.
Great Professor! Students who say she is too difficult or not helpful are probably not used to having to pull their own weight in order to do well. Knows what she is talking about and is willing to go over your assignments before their deadlines to give you feedback. It would be ideal to take PSY 300 with her before taking PSY 400 with her.
Very nice. Great lecturer, awesome examples. You have to read the book to have success in the class. Sometimes the day after day constant lecturing can get old, but she tries hard to keep the class' interest. Very passionate about her work. Very few points, so be careful.
She is very knowledgable in her field. The class is very easy, 3 exams and questions on articles, but to do well you have attend the lectures and read the book.
She is a very good prof who is willing to help her students. She does make you read articles that are VERY boring, but if you do them then the understanding of the material is a lot easier.
Great prof. Very nice and knowledgeable about her field. You can tell she really has a passion for this.
Kind and helpful. Be careful, very few points in the class, which can make it difficult to rebound from bad test (3)/skipping a summary of articles (3). Aside that though, class will be very interesting and lively. Also expect her to bash on evolutionary psychology. I recommend this class with her totally
Prof. Smith is bubbly and cheerful all the time. Very helpful and if you like the material very interesting. There were only 2 exams, it would have been more helpful if there had been 3 to break it up a little. There were some fun and easy writing assignments, and a paper 7-9 pages. Not a lot of work but her exams are difficult.
gave poor advice. told partner and i if we made the changes she suggested that our papers and presentation would be perfect, but gave us a c- anyway. had favorites. not helpful and test were hard. if you are signed up for this class run to anyone else but her.
Professor Smith is an amazing professor to say the very least. She's full of great examples that make you really understand the material - not only is she a good prof but she has such a good sense of humor which is truly appreciated at 8:30 am! Attending class is def necessary but it's fine if you miss a few lectures..she's SO amazing!
Amazing professor! Extremely clear teaching style, and amazing at keeping material interesting. Not a whole lot of points in the class, but tests are fair and if you study the material is easy.
great professor! a few small assignments and one easy paper. two exams and the final. she's super nice and always willing to answer questions!
Christine is an awesome professor. She has a great sense of humor and is always happy! I would highly suggest doing the reading and attending most lectures. Her tests can be difficult, so study ahead of time and you should do fine. She has a few small assignments which are easy points and one fairly simple paper.
She is very happy all of the time, which can be nice in the morning! Compared to other people's comments, she must have slightly changed her expectance in assignments. We only have 4 assignments which are pretty easy, two tests, and a final. Reading is important, and taking added lecture notes does help! But overall, nice, and not TOO hard.
If you are a psychology major you HAVE to take this class! It's extremely fun and there are entertaining & fun group activities (during class)! We read the book Alive and wrote a paper (pretty easy) and there are a few other small assignments as well. I would suggest taking PSY 360 first though, it will make 381 much easier for you! Love this class
Good professor and interesting material. She is super happy all the time too. Tests are pretty difficult but assignments arent bad. 2 tests and one final. rounds on tests but not grades. need a 94 to get an A. I learned a lot of interesting stuff in this class tho.
I didn't like Smith as much as many do. She's very nice, but has tough exams. The assignments are super easy and help make up points, though. I did learn a lot, but some of the material were things I learned in 101. She definitely knows her stuff, but I wouldn't recommend her during your first year.
I didn't go to the class much(I am just terrible at waking up early)and did very well. She posts her notes on BB, and gives very detailed exam reviews so the exams are easy if you know your stuff. She was SUPER nice and always happy, and tells great stories. HW is due the day of the exam, and she grades those every easily. I didn't use the book.
Wonderful prof, my favorite thus far! Would definitely recommend taking her. You do need to read but the exam reviews are in detail and she is very clear what to focus on. Very approachable and likes to have a good time in class.
Dr. Smith is funny, sweet, and tells great stories in fantastic detail. However, whenever a student mentions anything she can get very defensive which gets annoying. Her tests are pretty hard but if you read you'll be fine. The assignments are easy and help make up for points on tests. I would recommend her.
Very engaging teacher. No longer posts notes on BB so need to attend class (or get notes from classmates). Gives full marks on assignments if you meet the basic requirements. Some material from textbook on exams, but her exam reviews show exactly what you need to know.
Prof Smith REALLY knows her stuff. She kept class interesting with including personal stories, studies done, anything that can be related that would be interesting as a student. 3 exams, 3 assignments that take 10 minutes tops. Not necessarily an easy A but an interesting class definitely.
EXCELLENT professor! She is wonderful and engaging. Her grading scale is harsh, but she makes up for it with kind extra credit if the class is doing poorly. I would recommend this professor to anyone.
This professor knows her stuff and is very good at explaining things. Her assignments are really easy, all you have to do is meet the basic requirements and you will get full credit. Her tests are pretty hard though, but she gave us extra credit for one of them when a lot of people got a low score. I would take this professor again.
Good professor, but reading the book is a must to understand the material enough to apply it. She gives writing assignments but they are pretty simple. All her tests are on APPLYING the material so understanding it totally is extremely important! She does everything she can to help you succeed and is very nice
Great prof. Extremely clear and helpful. Use the book a lot for tests but her writing assignments are easy 100% grades. Application type exam questions so be sure to know the material well.
Dr. Smith is a good professor, but she is tough. Really read the book before and after the lecture and be able to apply the information to different case studies.
I am a very good student and this class was hard for me. Tests are super hard, and she does not offer any extra points. I loved her as a teacher but struggled in this class with the exams... if you dont do good on the exams drop the class. she does offer study guides but even those dont really help much.
Go to class and fill out study guides and you'll do fine! If you get the chance take her!
Christine is an amazing professor. She really cares about your grade. Expect to read a couple of books with corresponding essays, 3 exams, and a few easy response papers. If you pay attention and use her study guides you will get an A. The textbook is pretty much useless. I would recommend just getting the Kindle version to save money.
I absolutely love Professor Smith, she is super kind, very interesting to have as a professor. I had her for PSY 381 and was obsessed with the class. The material is a little tough but I would recommend her and the class again.
This professor is an oddity. She puts up a front of kindness, but you can kind of tell that it's not exactly honest. She has a major tendency to be condescending. Not sure she has much respect for students.
Taking PSY 401 with Christine was the best decision ever. She is super understanding and she pushed back our deadlines for our term paper back several times. Her tests can be tricky though so make sure you ask her questions. THERE IS NO TEXTBOOK. Rarely to no homework. She genuinely cared for her class.
Christine was an awesome prof! I would most definitely take another class taught by her given the chance. I would highly suggest taking her.
Awesome, easy grader, few assignments, super approachable and nice, she wants you to do well in the class, facilitated class discussion. Only thing is there are supplemental readings she posts on blackboard, but even then, I didn't read them in depth and still aced the in class assignments! I didn't even buy the textbook.
She is an awesome teacher! Tough tests so really study, but easy grader on papers. She is one of the best teachers I've ever had and she truly cares about her students. She's a great person I would recommend her.
Prepare very well for tests and work really quickly. You have no time to spare.
I loved having Prof Smith for 400. I heard she was one of the tougher profs for this course, and that proved to be true. That said, I learned SO much from her and way more than I did in 300. She's a great professor and truly cares about you. Highly recommend!
She was a great professor. Makes lectures very clear, explains things multiple times and in multiple ways so everyone can understand it. She's very personable and cares so much for her students and how they do in her class. Very understanding of outside class obligations and will reschedule tests with you. Would take her again a million times.
One of the sweetest people I've ever met. PSY 381 is pretty much the same as social psych. I can't distinguish the two. She explains everything very clearly and uses good examples. The books we read were very interesting. I would DEFINITELY recommend here as a Professor and as someone to talk to about your academic and career path plans.
Professor Smith is a lot of fun! She's hilarious and cute, and fun to be around! Her exams are difficult so make sure that you read and take good notes!
Christine is a great professor, and even though she posts all the Power Points online at one point, you NEED to show up for class to understand the full concept, which is why I received the grade I did. That and her tests are pretty tough. She will help you and her lectures are VERY interesting.
This class and social psych are pretty much the same. I took both at the same time and struggled in this class because of the confusing lectures and the way her class is organized. She's an easy grader but the multiple choice parts of the test are very hard due to the confusing question wording. I studied for a week straight and had trouble.
Dr. Smith was a wonderful professor for Group Dynamics! Her course was challenging. Her lectures were never boring, and she was always open to discussion. The books were interesting and enjoyable to read. Group Dynamics is a big help for group projects in other classes. Take your time on the tests and really think about the questions!
took this course during spring 2016, for being a 3hr lecture twice a week it wasn't too bad. it was an 8am course, and she still made it enjoyable! lots of reading for the summer course, no exams only papers and an assignment due every class period
Professor Smith is wonderful, and really makes learning the material exciting. All power-points used are put on blackboard, and the required novels we read for class are interesting. Tests are easy if you paid attention and read all the material she gives out. 10/10 would recommend.
Prof. Smith is super caring, flexible, and funny. She teaches the material well and the topics are super interesting! But it is imperative that you attend class because there is no textbook and the pp's seem incomplete without her explanation. Grade is based on 3 pretty tough multiple choice exams and 5 really easy "papers" for attendance basically
Summer class is where it's at. I was nervous b/c her reviews said she was very difficult but during the summer there were 8 assigned readings w/ ?'s (1 of which she forgot to post, so free 20 pts), 2 short 5-page papers, and 1 final exam (50 questions). If you do the work you'll get a good grade. Lectures are interesting and she keeps your focus
Dr. Smith was awesome! Took it in the first 6 weeks of the spring semester. Didn't have a textbook, but she had research articles in place of it. Only 2 papers and an exam with 8 assignments thrown in due at the beginning of class. Would highly suggest taking her for Social Psychology!
Dr. Smith is a tremendously educated on the information given in class. Not sure if I would take her again tho. A LOT of reading, including 3 novels and long online readings she assigns every class almost. Almost the whole grade is based off of 2 tests and a paper. Also, I disliked how much she subtly pushed her political view on class topics.
Professor Smith is hands down the best professor in the Psychology department. I took this class as an 8:30am and I am not a morning person, but she made me eager to come to class because the lectures were so engaging and interesting. There is no real textbook, just 3 small novels.
Super friendly and you can tell she really loves her job! Wish I could have her in the future!
Professor Smith could be one of the best professor's I have ever had. The content was engaging and she made me truly want to come to class every single day! There wasn't a textbook for the course, but two very good books that were interesting to read! Exam's were very wordy, but she prepared us well for them.
I'm so glad I took PSY 400 with C. Smith. She is very great at explaining things and will bend over backwards to help you whenever you need. No question is a dumb question. There is one group research paper due at the end of the semester and she gives you plenty of time to accomplish each part of it. There is one exam at the end also.
Wow, there are endless nice things to say about Dr. Smith. She is an absolute angel and I would highly recommend her. Really cares about her students and is always there to help.
Not sure why her ratings are so high. She really does care and seems to like what she does, but she isn't always clear on what she's teaching. There is a group project but really it's pretty much on your own, you write the intro together and then you are on your own for the rest. Tough grader, not very flexible hours to meet. tough class imo
Sweet, caring, knowledgeable professor. That being said, her grading was outrageous. Most of the course was spent meeting with your group and little time was spent learning material. There was one exam (most of the class did poorly) and a final paper. Little instruction was given for the paper, yet it was graded incredibly harshly.
Dr. Smith is probably the sweetest professor you will meet. It is obvious that she cares so much about her students. She was extremely helpful, especially if you go to her office hours. If you don't understand something, she will work with you as long as it takes until you understand. Only negative thing is, paper and exam were very difficult.
Not many points in the class but the assignments are meant to pad your grade. She is very sweet and will accommodate you when needed. Will answer any questions and appreciates opinions and on-topic discussions in class- will even take time to talk about hot topics on GVSU and current events. Go to class bc she has 6 in-class writing assignments.
Took the 6-week spring course. Two papers for the whole semester which is not bad but they are slightly difficult to write just cause of the pandemic. Quizzes every week on lectures and reading for the week. Have questions email her she is more than willing to answer questions and explain concepts if you don't understand them.
On the downside, she assigned group work during online learning, which is a bad move. But she made up for it by being extremely flexible and understanding. She didn't have hard deadlines on nearly anything, which was nice. She also was very accessible, I've sent so many emails and she's responded within a couple hours every time. She clearly cares.
Literally the nicest and more understanding professor ever. Will extend due dates if you aren't understanding the material and has so many opportunities to meet with her outside of class. 11/10 would recommend this professor for PSY400 and any other class she teaches
This professor is just so sweet. She wants her students to succeed. She is patient and very understanding. She did well with online learning as well. Definitely take her!
The kindest professor! Expectations and explanations are not very clear, but still is a tough grader. Little instruction for the final paper which is half done in groups and half done individually. However, she is very nice and flexible with due dates. Very willing to meet with you outside of class and work with you to make sure you understand.
Definitely take Dr. Smith if you have the opportunity to for PSY 400. She cares about her students a lot and it shows. She is very easy to reach when you need extra help and will extend due dates when needed.
Had her a couple semesters ago. So sweet and will give you as much help as she can. Super understanding, if you need a deadline extended she will give it to you. Lectures were boring to me, I don't have the mind for a lot of research analysis/calculations. Very fair grader, got almost 100% on my final paper/research presentation. Just put in effort
She is super nice & fun to be around. but, the class itself was dreadful. You sit in a circle doing basically nothing for 2 hours straight. Its discussion-based so you don't learn anything. the books used were mostly elementary for the level we should've been at. It was disappointing to not get to discuss any psychology topics in a psy capstone
Such a kind and understanding professor. Changed the syllabus accordingly if the class wasn't understanding concepts/needed more time to complete things. About one worksheet a week (graded on completion/effort), a couple quizzes and labs. Cares more about your effort than being correct. If you struggled in stats with SPSS take this professor!
I love this prof! She is very caring and understanding. I struggled in PSY 300 and I was nervous about this class, but she was so kind about everything and really cared about her student's succeeding. The class itself is new so I think they will be adjusting things next semester. But definitely take her for 350 if you can.
Super nice and despite it being her first semester teaching PSY350 she adjusted accordingly to our class and really took in our opinions and what felt best for us as a class. Def recommend taking her!
This class was awful. I don't see how it's even psychology. The professor tried to be nice but you could tell she thought we were stupid if we didn't get it right away.
This was a difficult class, but she was understanding and willing to compromise. You could tell she wanted everyone to succeed. I would definitely recommend taking her for this class. I struggled a lot but still ended up with an A. She gives good feedback and is very thorough in explanations. I'd definitely take her again for another course.
This professor cares so much about her students. Would do anything to help you succeed. Responds quickly to questions through email. Tough course but this professor will help you pass it! Also a great intro to Psy 400
She is a very hard worker and is willing to help students earn a good grade. Take advantage of her office hours because this class can be very challenging. She lets you have two attempts on worksheets and will help you with any other assignment. There are also labs and a few quizzes. You can tell that she wants her students to succeed.
Professor Smith is a really good person and caring but she is a very disorganized professor. She expected us to have an understanding of statistics going into this class and did not do a good job of breaking things down for students who did not know stats. I found myself in office hours every week just to pass the class.
As a Psychology major, if I could take Dr. Smith for every class I would. She is incredibly caring and understanding in the way she explains things. Multiple reflection papers but super easy as it is about you and all she grades on is depth. Canceled class on Halloween and right after fall break. 100% take her!!!
One of my all-time favorite professors. Incredibly caring and knows the subject like the back of her hand. I couldn't recommend a professor more than Christine Smith, she is influential and goes above and beyond for every student in her class. Just fantastic in every way possible. Take her class.
Every week there is a discussion and a quiz, and every other week there is a project. It was a pretty heavy course load for a 6 week summer class. She grades the discussions pretty harshly, and be prepared to read A LOT.
Professor Smith is delightful and every lecture was jam-packed with fascinating topics and studies. The material in Social Psych and the way Prof Smith presents it is just straight up fun and made for one of the most engaging classes I had the privilege of taking. Take her classes, she is great!
Final grade is based on six quizzes and three projects. The wording of quiz questions, lectures, and project instructions are unclear or redundant at times. Grading is harsh and unpredictable, with vague rubrics and instructions that lack clarity on her expectations. Expect long lectures and readings weekly, especially for a six-week class.
Constantly changed schedule of quizzes and assignments on the syllabus w/o an official announcement, which left students confused and unprepared. Also rarely answers emails, when she does they have a rude undertone. Otherwise, she is a very nice lady and her heart seems to be in the right place.
