She's very boring to listen to. Every day she comes in and reads off of her notes with very little digression from them. She reads very fast, so it's hard to write down everything before she moves on. She also doesn't stress what is important, so you don't know what's important to note. Tests are VERY difficult. Includes memorizing 4 pages of terms
Since I changed majors I had to drop one of my two major courses and this one was an easy decision to drop. All she did was read from and outline that was on the projector from her. Very quiet and monotone voice. Even if the other section is an 8 am, choose that teacher!
I'm a history major, I got an A in the class prior to this, and I FAILED her midterm, she is an extremely hard grader, needless to say. Very, very boring to listen to in class, reads off of an outline quietly and if you don't "get a sense" of something as she would say, you're done for.
She's semi-loquacious, uninvolved, and boring.
she is a nice lady but she can not teach. so boring. I'm a history major, love history, and still fall asleep. I had no idea what she wanted for the tests or papers.
She's really nice and pleasant but is not a very good teacher. The class is seems hard to do well in.
Can't understand anything she is saying. She simply reads off of an outline fast enough to the point where you can't even take notes. I am a history major and have gotten A's and B's in all prior history courses. The tests are absolutely rediculous in the amount of information that you have to know. I wound find another professor for your class
so i was in this for 2 days.basically she walks in puts the outline in back of her on the prjector and reads off of it ina quite, monotone voice... hiding behind the podium.. for 45 mins. and i had to buy like 6 books... while the other section/professor had like 2.so yeah needless to say... i dropped it.
I do not care what others say. I took her for Russian History last semester and she was fab. Eloquent, helpful, nice. I would take another one of her classes anytime.
So, I felt no need to write a review until I read some others- History 102 is a your basic major class, and is not terribly interesting subject matter. Prof. Vargas works with it, and adds a soviet spin to an otherwise familiar topic. You may be bored and ought to get an A, but I'll take a nice professor over an exciting one any day.
Boring Lectures, Impossibly hard tests, & she is stubborn & unwilling 2 help those who need it! I love history but hated the class, so if its not your thing it will be torture! I worked my butt off & still Failed! Shes impossible 2 hear-even from the front, way 2 fast 2 follow-even w/ her "outlines", & is WAY 2 harsh a grader 4 a gen ed class!!!
the worst **** i n g teacher i have ever had, one time i was in class and for fifteen minutes counted how many times she said the word "UM" in her lecture and she had said "UM" 63 times ... 63 times. You know how hard it is to pay attention and learn when your teacher is saying the word "UM" every two words is extremely annoying Horrible teacher
Enthusiastic, but rambles and her quizes suck
Worst teacher I have ever had. Reads from 20 sheets of paper word for word. No way to organize your notes or follow her lecture. Plus she assigned a textbook and FIVE novels for a 102 class. Ridiculous.
Very confusing, did not go in chronogolical order.Calls herself a "social historian", therefore doesn't realy have any information on the political aspects. Always jumped around. She ruined this class for me.
She isn't half as bad as most of these reviews are. The lectures can get boring and slightly confusing, so it really helps to do at least SOME of the reading before lecture. The quizzes and exams are hard if you don't study. However, the exams are all written and she isn't a very hard grader. The same goes with the papers you have to write.
She is probably the worst professor I have ever had. If you can avoid having her as yours, I would advise you to do so. She doesn't seem to know how to lecture, she just stands there reading her notes. Her exams are extremely hard and its hard to follow her teachings since she bounces around.
If u want a good grade, U HAVE TO READ THE BOOK! It really helps when u read the chapters before lectures. Quizzes arent that bad, but they arent easy. She takes ur best 4 out of 5 quiz scores. Papers arent that bad. Again, writing papers for her isnt easy, but its not really hard. Go to lecture and do the readings
This class is a death sentence for your GPA. Her lectures have no sense of direction and are really boring. The tests require you to know EVERYTHING about +50 terms, because you don't know which 10 or so she'll put on the exam... way too difficult. THe quizzes are tough too. Just don't take this class.
I like Dr. Harris. She is very knowledgeable and really helpful. Yes, her exams are a bit hard, but you need to study very hard for these western civ courses, anyway, to get an idea of all these European countries.
I like Dr. Harris, too. I think we confuse the professor with the material sometimes. Western Civ is a hard class, but she is very nice and very helpful when you go to see her. She is a bit low-key in class but I kinda like that.
Professor Varga Harris is one of the friendliest and most helpful teachers I have had at ISU. The material is not easy, but come on people this is a 300 level course. Her social approach to history is fascinating and will teach you the real way the period was viewed, not the same old rehashed crap.
I liked her. She is nice.
She is a very nice, but if you are an incoming freshman be ready for a challenge. She talks so fast that it is hard to keep up and during her lectures she tends to jump around a lot. The test are hard, but she doesn't grade that hard on the paper. Overall nice and pretty easy grader, but tests are ridiculous.
A great teacher - she's so knowledgeable and really really helpful. I learned a lot about western civilization in this class!
Dr. Harris is probably the best Professor I've ever had. She is passionate about her work and it shows through her lectures. She is very understanding with illness when I had mono for 1/2 the sem. Her course work seems overwhelming at first, but it really is manageable if you put the effort in. You basically will get what you put in.
Professor Varga-Harris is a cool professor and I like her a lot. I learned a lot in her Western Civ class last semester. Challenging class.
She's very knowledgeable, but she uses that to her disadvantage. She lectures pretty fast so when you're trying to write something down, she already has gone on to something else you need to write down. Confusing grader on the essays. I didn't enjoy her that much. If you have to take her, it's not the end of the world, but try and find another.
lectures too fast.doesn't use overhead projector effectively.rarely asks if students understand the material.overemphasizes the 20th century and Russia.lectures too fast.is pleasant helpful and a easy grader.the prof is tragically flawed by starting each class with "i hope i can finish this" and proceeds to give a 70 minute lecture in 50 minutes.
Had her for two classes. Very knowledgeable, lectures can be difficult to follow at times, but class discussion tends to reign her in a little. If you have a hard time following her lectures talk to her, because she is very helpful one on one. A fairly easy grader on papers and projects. Attendance is 20% of your final grade.
Good Class for an intro History course. She was very knowledgeable. I enjoyed this class. Make sure you go to lecture if you do you should be fine!
Sometimes hard to spell names because she uses slideshows but only of pictures. She is really helpful if you ask her for help. Tests are not easy but can regain points on papers. Overall have to work for the grade but very nice teacher.
Ugh. Such a frustrating class. The focus in this class seemed to be the quantity of things you know, not the quality. I hated memorizing a billion facts about things that, as of this moment, I barely remember. Rote memorization is NOT learning.
She's a little quirky but she really does want her students to succeed. Yes, there is quite a bit of memorization involved but that's normal for a history class. She really is a great teacher... I'm hoping to take a third class with her if I can. I highly recommend her as long as you're willing to put in some effort.
She is a really nice lady and really cares about her class! If you show up and take notes you will do fine. She gives a lot of extra credit and makes the grading scale easier.
I can't get over how little detail she lectures. I am currently in her class and she just gives a brief overview of the material in lecture. YOU MUST READ the book or you will struggle. The quizzes are impossible to prepare for and she grades the reading responses very hard, they are 40% of your grade. The whole scale is off, but thats college kids
This class is the worse! Do yourself a favor and don't take her HIS 102 class! Her tests require you to memorized specific historical details about 54 terms for different centuries then it's all short answer in blue book, reading responses are 40% of your grade but she doesn't tell you what day she's giving responses, & class is a total bore! -___-
She was one of the worst teachers I have ever encountered. She seems to only want students to memorize 60 different terms and event with specific details but only test you on the 5 most obscure ones. This class s terrible do not take it with her.
Assignments are not that difficult, but are time-consuming if you want to do a good job. They require critical thinking. Lectures are not mandatory, but, GO! Missing can screw you over. She does not give good feedback if you need help on an assignment. But it is still not hard to succeed. Just attend class and take enough time on homework.
Very passionate and knowledgeable in her field. Document Discussion days were the biggest portion of the grade, I got a C because I missed two. Tests were based almost entirely on lectures. Gave great note outlines to follow and was very helpful.
I liked Dr. Varga-Harris' class for the first few class periods when she lectured. She's very knowledgable. Then the class turned into discussions every day which I hate. (I learn almost nothing). Some of the paper assignments weren't clear so I got a lower grade in the class than I usually do. Would not take again.
Unless you are really good at history, you will probably not do well in the class. The professor is such a hard grader, and her lectures are unbearable. The only reason I go to class is because you need the notes to study or you won't pass.
Professor Varga-Harris is by far the toughest professor I've had yet in college. This class has way too much information you have to memorize & if you're a non history major like me you are going to struggle. I DO NOT recommend due to the amount of stress I had to put myself through by going her boring lectures all semester & comprehending nothing.
Really difficult, but if you put work in and read and take good notes, you can pass. Her grading scale is different than most professors (i.e 62-74 is a C), so it's adjusted for the difficulty. If you go to her office hours, she is very helpful and gives good feedback. Very nice lady, and if you participate and pay attention she will like you a lot
She lectures just about every class and if you don't show up you're gonna fail the test. She lectures without a powerpoint and is a technology free zone so get ready to write and use short hand. Her test are the most difficult thing about the class. She gives you 50 terms but only puts 8 on the test and you have to write the 5W's and significance.
AWFUL! She makes you read the textbook, then in class she boringly summarizes what you read with a poorly made powerpoint. Very tough grader. Do NOT take her unless you want to tank your GPA.
There are very few grades & although she is a tough grader, the class itself isn't that hard. You don't have to show up, but unless you read the book (which you NEED for her quizzes) not going might mess you up. Also, I highly recommend asking her to look over your paper before you hand it in. She's more than willing to & that ensures a good grade.
Terrible teacher terrible lectures. So boring and does nothing to excites the class. Just stands there boring everyone to sleep with her voice. Tough grader for a Gen Ed Class.
Had her as my first graduate level professor at ISU and she was very helpful. Knows so much and is always keeping the discussion lively and informative. Definitely recommend her for anyone continuing their education in history. 2 papers, a book review and 2 small responses. Do well on those, you get the A.
Terrible lectures, ungodly amount of reading, very tough grader with little-to-no feedback, boring topic. Do not take.
If you are thinking about taking this for a gen ed. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Preaches about "fairness", but her tests are completely subjective (only grades are 8 written tests). And rather than testing you on the big subject matters and how they effect history-she focuses on fine detail. The standard is a copy and paste answer of an encyclopedia.
Dr. V-H is very knowledgable about the course material and gives great lectures. Reading isn't really required for class, but is for the tests. TAKE NOTES. There is info in the lectures that is not included in the book, but may be on tests. Tests were challenging, but not unmanageable if you study a lot.
She turned me off from teaching and history, changed my major. Told me I'd have to tell students they can't learn a certain way, that my way of explaining material was not right. If a subject was even slightly mentioned in class it was immediately out of discussion for the term paper. Awful
Absolutely awful Professor. Extremely Tough grader. Study guides are ridiculously long and she expects you to remember specific information about every term listed. On the test she knocks major points off for not being specific enough. Its problematic that students must memorize so many terms only to define a few terms on the test.
Professor Varga-Harris is a good teacher and clearly very knowledgable. Grades are based on 3 tests and several reading quizzes. She's a tough grader but if you listen, take notes, and read, its a pretty easy class.
This woman is just so stuck up. No other way to put it. Her lectures, while insightful from time to time, are just so slow and boring (I know shes a history prof but that's compared to the rest of the slow boring history profs). Not a very kind person and is not willing to work with students on just about anything. Unpleasant vibe.
She was the worst teacher that I've had at ISU. She does not help when you go to office hours. If you could I would avoid taking this class with her at all costs! Defiantly would not recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Varga-Harris is very knowledgeable on the topic but her lectures were very long and boring. Grade is based on 6 reading-heavy assignments, the final and a small amount of extra credit. The class is quite dull but she gives good and honest feedback on assignments. If you show up to class and take notes, you will get an A.
Not only is she a boring lecturer and gives difficult exams, she is also not a great college educator. She treated my class like we were grade school children and would spent half of lecture talking about how we are going to be punished for not behaving, even if you turned around for a second to ask someone for a pen. Extremely condescending too.
Dr. Varga-Harris was a great professor and I really enjoyed her class. She gives engaging lectures and youll learn a lot from her. She gives tons of information so be prepared to take diligent notes but youll learn a lot from her. I really enjoyed her class and would definitely take another one of hers in the future.
Prof. Varga-Harris is a really good professor and seems to genuinely enjoy her subject. I took her class entirely online, and she still managed to keep it pretty engaging. All of her grading is fair, and she gives good feedback on every assignment she gives.
I enjoyed her lectures and that's all class is. If you're not interested in history you'll hate it. Six "document analysis" assignments, a final and participation/attendance is all that's graded. TAKE THOROUGH NOTES AND ITS NOT THAT BAD. Knows her stuff especially when it comes to Europe and Russia.
For an entry level class she grades very tough. Expects you to put all your focus on this class and does not provide you very much to take notes with, she has heavy lectures and you are expected to take notes off what she says.
The writing assignments are longer and not much fun at all and they are worth 80% of the class. It's about 10 questions about 2-3 texts, and you have to write a paragraph for each. So if you're not good at that you will struggle. She's nit-picky with grading these and will give you a failing grade without hesitation. Lectures we're boring too.
Professor Harris was always available and knowledgeable about the topic. - 5 document analysis (answer her 10 questions, 3-4 sentences each) - 2 papers (one is the final -- take home) - Lecture-based -- gives note outlines, if you use them and take notes assignments are easy - Sign-in sheet She lectures the whole time so occasionally boring.
Dr.Varga-Harris is one of the kindest professors ever. She is always willing to help and is super understanding. If you need an extension let her know ahead of time and she will give it to you. The assignments are graded heavily but if you read the material given to you there should be no issue. She so sweet, don't read into the bad reviews.
I absolutely adored CVH and her class. It is so important to go to lectures. She has a book assigned with the course but I never bought it and never needed to use it. She is really understanding and sweet. She is passionate about history and will try to engage you in class. If you show up, take notes, and listen you will pass.
CVH is great. Very passionate and eager to help. She's very accessible outside of class and loves helping her students.
Dr. Varga-Harris is an extremely tough grader, her tests are very challenging, also her lectures are intense.
She is a kind person, but I would never take her class again. Especially if it's for a gen ed. Grades papers very harshly, there's also at least two a week, grades both attendance and participation in lectures strictly. If you are not a history major, do not take her class for a gen ed.
I took IDS 212, Class lectures are slow and boring. Reading is helpful but very long and dense. I'm not a history major so I found this GenEd very hard as she grades papers harshly, the historic writing style is different than I'm used to. HW and essays are long but not that hard and you get to pick which ones to do. If you can, take another class.
I loved this course. Dr. Varga-Harris is a Soviet historian but is very knowledgeable of Imperial Russia. She is not afraid to tell you when she is unsure of the content she is teaching, particularly wars/battles. Grades included five free-writes, a paper on one of the memoirs she assigned, a podcast report, and the final.
This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. She is a very challenging grader and it sometimes can lead to you getting stuck with a bad grade because all the assignments are writing assignments. I did go to her office hours and she said I have a comprehension issue with the readings (or she wouldn't be there during her assigned time).
She is a terrible grader. Never had anyone grade harder than her. Attendance matters more than anything and all she does is lecture about things that make no sense at all. Worst teacher I have ever had. Would never take the class again.
One of the hardest classes I've taken so far as a History major as well. Extremely tough grader (for writing) and all the assignments were writing related which made it even more challenging. Also terrible about communication, I would sometimes go to her office hours and she wouldn't even be there during her assigned time.
As much as everyone is saying why you shouldn't take her class. I think you should. She taught me that my papers need to be better. She opened my eyes a bit about how important writing is. Sure, the class is boring and it was hell having to go to every class. She is a very tough grader! What I recommend is taking advantage of her office hours.
The worst class I have ever taken in my entire life I wish everyday that I dropped the class day one. I HATE going to this class. Save your time and do NOT take this class.
Many on this page are speaking ill of Dr.Varga Harris, so I have decided to defend her. Sure, she expects you to read, and she expects you to write quality essays. But this is good history, guys. This is how history is supposed to be done. She is an excellent history professor, she knows her craft well and expects her students to do history well...
One of the hardest graders ive ever encountered. But she does it for a reason. She is very knowledgeable and very smart. She makes you THINK. I would take her again because she help me develop my writing skills.
The outlines are not very helpful, and you have to be present in lectures to get the information you need. Notes in her class can only be taken on paper, no electronics are allowed. The subject itself spans a lot of years, and it is clear that she is not super enthused by the topic. Certain subjects she does make more interesting, though.
She's really good and tough. I can't believe I survived but I think I learned so much!! I think the class should be a 3 level. A lot of writing. Very unique approach to history.
Dr. Varga-Harris has been my absolute favorite professor at ISU so far! Many of the reviews on RMP seem to be from non-history majors taking 102, however if you are a HIS or HIS Ed. major, she is an excellent professor to take a class with! She is very kind, knowledgeable, and professional. Looking forward to taking her class on the Soviet era!
History Majors: Good. Deep content knowledge, lots of reading, very harsh grading. Education Majors: Look elsewhere. You'll feel out of place and, frankly, like this is an equally tedious and useless set of 3 credit hours. Very history-academia oriented, sadly out of touch HSS Ed. majors. TLDR Take if you sip tea with a high pinky. Otherwise, nah.
Knowledgeable professor who provides excellent feedback. Lectures may be boring if you're not into Russian History. Mix of a hard/easy grader, but it's because she cares about writing, and it's in your best interest if you're a history major. I sent her some papers before they were due for feedback, which helped my grade.
