ok professor, but not the most exciting
she pretty much blows
This profesor knows spanish!! Great conversation starter before you ask those questions in her office hours
As a teacher she is tough and her lectures arent exactly the most helpful
lecture good middle of the morning naptime
Her first exam sucks - the last two and the final are cake, though.
not only is she EXTREMELY boring but her demos NEVER work. she never has a point and she's horrible. get another professor or get a good TA.
She's a pretty good lecturer, but goes pretty fast. I learned more by printing out the lecture notes and reading them myself than I did from actually going to the lectures.
Exams were fair, as long as you study you will be fine. She is a little impersonable. Does have a lot of office hours however. Lectures were very good, and her demos DID work for our class.
If all possible, don't take this class from her. She breezes through the hard material very quickly and most of the demos dont work. Everything that I learned in Chem 102 was thanks to my TA, not her. Exams were extremely hard.
although the material isn't exciting, she does a good job of presenting it clearly. some exams are really hard, although she'll always be there to help
Good at explaining.
worse than hummel if possible...didnt know how to do some of the problems on her exam that SHE made and had an attitude. hopefully she will leave the u of i.....
What can you say about a professor who didn't know how to do some of the problems on an exam that she made? How do you expect the students to learn from someone like that? She was also impersonable and went too fast with the material.
I thought Dr.Yerkes does a great job teaching the class... Yes the exams were tough, but this is not high school, it has to be a challenge! She makes lectures interesting by always having demos to get your attention.
she is good
Quite possibly the most helpful teacher I've had in Chemistry. Does an excellent job at explaining material. Exams are a little tough but, hello, you are in college now!
She is really organized when presenting her lectures and knows what she's talking about. Sometimes, it's hard to keep up because she goes fast, but if you keep up on reading, it's pretty easy. She was really nice about helping me with some questions before the exams.
aweful teacher, but then again i went to class like 4 times.
She wanted us to fail
Doesn't explain difficult material well. Tests and quizzes are hard, and she can't answer her own test questions.
tests are hard...you think you are prepared after studying hours but then when you take the tests it's like it didn't help at all-quizzes which are somewhat easy IMO, but are nothing like the test
Don't listen to those whiny babies, Dr. Yerkes is a superb professor with organized lecture slides and is available in her office more than any professor I've ever had. Yeah the class is challenging, it's chemistry. If you don't put in, you sure as hell won't get out.
I agree with most comments; she is very, very tricky/difficult, but she is also very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. She's a very effective teacher, but I really don't think her exams are completely fair.
Excellent teacher. Course material is not impossible, but it's fast-paced (keep up with the work, an A is doable). Furthermore, she is extremely helpful: she welcomes students even during non-office hours, holds review sessions before each exam, etc. Also very sympathetic to personal probs - lenient conflict quiz/exam policy. Nice lady.
She is a very nice person and a pretty good teacher. Yes, I felt that she made very hard and unfair tests, but she did made the effort in giving the students as much help as possible. She is also very nice about giving lots a points away through homeowrk and quizzes. The least you should get is a C!
Lecture wasn't very helpful at all...I basically learned everything through my TA
Learned everything through the TA, very nice teacher though. Her lecture slides were random stuff that she only test like a part of on her impossible test so its hard to sort though what you need to learn and what is a waste of time. good luck, you'll need a lot of it.
I had her for both classes and got in A in both also. She'll help you if you just ask. Good prof!
She is very good at reading, but not teaching. Does not explain. Demos dont exist.
Very clear and concise.
throws out numbers. may know material but she can't teach!
bad demos, or none. not good examples. her slides are confusing and some stuff are directly out of the book. can't teach
Very bad at teaching. Also she does not know how to use Power Point. Afraid of her own demos.
Powerpoint slides are cluttered, but she ties in chemistry into real life. Demos are horrible though
her lectures are okay..she uses powerpoint whihc I am not a big fan of when it comes to teaching chemistry. Her tests are hard, you need to pay attention to the tiniest detail.. she is very willing to help outside of lecture...she's available for help almost anytime. Overall, she's okay..it depends on your choice
A very good Chem prof. The class is well paced so that you don't waste time, but you don't go too fast and you end up getting a lot done. Exams are very fair in 102 and slightly more difficult in 104. She always clear in what she expects and explains material very well.
She is one of the best professors I have ever had. Her presentation is well prepared and she knows what she is talking about. She is always very welcoming and professional at office hours. You have to work for an A, but that's any chem class.
Very good lectures. Very smart. Very welcoming. Office hours all day essentially. Hard to get an A, though. Tests are difficult.

She is very clear and her tests are hard, but fair.
Overall, I really enjoyed taking the class from her. She used powerpoints which got cluttered at times, but if you pay attention during class, you can sort them out. She was ALWAYS available in her office and was always very welcoming and helpful. Exams were very difficult, but combined with quiz grades, an A is very possible.

She's really good. Her test are difficult and you really need to study if you desire a good grade. She is very helful, though a bit unclear at times.
Makes tests ridiculously tricky. One can study for hours and know all the material very well and still do horrendously on the test. Hummel was a much better professor
Very very hard tests. Lectures move at a thousand feet per second. A tough class but shouldn't be hard to get a solid B.

At first i went to lecture, then i realized it was pointless because all of her notes and powerpoint slides are online. her lectures were alright, but kind of boring. I got an A in the class and thought the tests were really easy if you study for them. She was a decent professor, but again i didnt go to all that many lectures.
Yeah for Dr. Yerkes! She was a wonderful professor, and very caring for her students. If you ever need help, she is always happy to help during her office hours. I loved the class, and I found her power points very effective and helpful. I would highly advise taking her for CHEM 102/104! Much better than hummel!
Amazing professor. One of the best lecturers I've had! Go to office hours because she can explain everything soooo well.
She is horrible. NEVER go to her office hours, if you do, she'll make you fell so stupid. She does not know how to teach, she goes really fast on her lectures and her exams are really confusing.
She was an excellent professor. She went really fast in lecture but if you wrote down questions and went to office hours she would explain the questions perfectly. She's great. Really caring and she remembers names which is a plus!
She talks really fast and moves through the material pretty quickly but if you go to office hours she'll go over everything again
50 minute lectures consisting of nothing more than speed-talking coupled with tons of powerpoint. Occasional demos.
talks fast so pay attention
The thermodynamic part of the class was easily the most difficult section. The class wasn't that bad, but she wasn't very good at lecturing. Things would be on the exams that she barely touched on in lecture.
Yerkes is GREAT! Print out the powerpoints BEFORE class, and just take notes on those. and GO to office hours! she was amazing and even helped me on a chem lab she knew nothing about. She's so nice so don't be scared! it's a HARD class on its own but i pulled off an A-
Great professor, if you are at all competent you shouldn't get less than an A.
She goes way to fast on account of reading directly off of her powerpoints. I hear that her class goes more in depth and is a lot harder than the comparitive teachers and subjects
She's a decent professor, but bored me to death. Powerpoints are generally fine by me, but she read off of them directly. A good professor doesn't do this. I've had professors who read off the screen, and others who don't. The ones who don't are general more effective professors. And I must say, she didn't seem at all interested in what she wa
Make people sleep
She's very boring and reads off of her power points directly so you don't even have to go to class if you just read the power points and the book. Her exams are unnecessarily hard and most of the time she doesn't know how to answer them herself.
she good for 102 and for 104 not so much. She emphisizes orgo way too much and it doesnt give you an advantage when 232 comes around. Take her for 102 and youll do well but take Ray for 104. Its just less of a head ache.
She is a decent professor. She definitely should not read straight off her powerpoints like she does, and her tests are tricky for no reason, but if you can pay attention and keep up in class, you should do fine. One thing that really helped me was getting the book of past hour exams from the bookstore. If you can nail those, you will be fine.
I didn't feel like she cared about teaching at all. I have a different professor this semester for 104 and it has made going to class a lot easier.
She makes test questions where there is not a right answer as a choice... It happened all 3 times for our class, then she refuses to throw out the question. She also lectures on the basics, but tests on the toughest material.
I took yerkes for both 102 and 104...no its not an easy class, but she is the easiest of the chem professors i think. If your a more math based student shes a better teacher for you.she stresses math above conceptual stuff.need help, go to her office hours, shes cool and down to earth. for chem 104 i barley went and got a B+.Not too hard of a class
Her exact words for our orgo Chem... "You only have to memorize 10 words to get an A" Anybody that knows orgo at all knows that is not true.
She reads her slides, teaches the easy stuff, tests the hard stuff. Take Ray or whoever else teaches this class because she does everything a prof is supposed to not do.
Not a bad professor, in my opinion. Her lectures are streamlined and very easy to follow. She does stress basics during lecture, but she gives plenty of opportunity to apply all the course material before exams.
Take Decoste. Seriously. This teacher is B.S. Her curriculum is ridiculous, you have to learn 10times more then Decoste's curriculum. If your not an idiot then don't take her. Shape your schedule around so you DO NOT GET YERKES. Trust me, even if you study, unless you have a strong background in Chem your gonna get your A S $ kicked.
She is not very helpful when I went to get help with problems, I felt she was condescending.
Even though I hear a lot of people complain about Yerkes, I really didn't think she was all that bad. This class is in no way easy but as long as you go to lecture and pay attention you should do just fine. She does fly through lecture pretty quickly so make sure to keep up. Her quizzes are easy but watch out for her exams, they are no joke.
Yerkes is an awesome professor. She is always available for office hours and is really helpful. She posts notes, lectures, practice problems, and many other resources online, which a lot of other professors don't do. As long as you try, you should be able to do just fine.
Prof Yerkes knows what she's talking about and even though she does speak fast during lectures, she is ALWAYS available for office hours to clear things up. She is pretty straightforward and is also really flexible when it comes to grading. She is also better at preparing you for organic chemistry than some of the other professors.
She speeds through a lot of important materials and expect it to be tested in detail later. The discussion sections are where I actiually learn the material. Usually I have no idea what she is talking about in class.
She was fabulous! Honestly, I don't understand why people rate her below 5 stars. I'm not terribly amazing at chemistry but she helped so much during her office hours. I advise everyone to take advantage of that. She's very understanding and she is honestly THE BEST professor I've had here. Props to Yerkes! Review the Lon capa for the quizzes. It really helps to get those done early.
For those of you who hated 102 with Hummel, never fear, Yerkes is here! She was a GREAT professor who made me actually like chemistry again after the disaster that was Chem 102. Go to her office hours if you don't understand something and be thankful for the pre-orgo stuff she teaches you, you'll need it later! :)
She lectures the simple stuff and tests the hard stuff. Also, she tried to claim that there is NO memorization in the whole class. What a lie.
yerkes was mean. even though she had office hours, she would get pissed if you didn't understand the material and concepts. I don't like her, and I would not recommend her at all for any class. Take Ray.
LOVED Yerkes. She made the material clear and gave us everything we needed to really understand it. The exam are really hard but most people just didn't study enough or thought they they would get an A because they like chemistry before hand. Just don't go in with a bad attitude and you'll be fine.
Not the best professor, lecture really isn't very helpful so make sure you get a good TA. She goes through the materiel so quickly, thus you have to be attentive. Her tests are hard!
very helpful and nice!
Her tests are much more manageable than the other sections.
Avoid taking Chemistry with Yerkes at all cost. If she is the only teacher available, WAIT TILL NEXT SEMESTER. She literally stands behind her computer the whole time is very boring. Hard to follow her because she uses no variation. No doubt she knows her material, but some people should not be a professor and she is one of them.
I had her for 102 and 104. She's really good for 104. She is extremely good at introducing organic chemistry, and you'll need a good foundation before orgo 1. 102 was hard because she makes the exams very time-crunched. Don't take her for 102.
if you do the homework and go to discussions you're set!
Incredibly helpful, she's in her office for a good portion of the day and tells you to come by if you need help. Presents the material in a good way. Challenging tests, but fair.
Lecture, discussion, and homework material correspond well. When tests come up, material suddenly jumps to more difficult in-depth topics seemingly not mentioned in other portions of the class. Even textbook readings only help minimally. Grade is now at stake only because of test.
As nice and helpful as dr. yerkes appears, i couldn't help but to doze off in her class. She speaks the entire time and, although she has good intentions, her low-sounding voice can make anyone fall asleep. Hw is understandable, quizzes are okay, but exams...they are something else. They contain material that you've never worked with before.
people complain about her way too much. pay attention in lecture. she knows her stuff and gets it across in a good way. tests are fair and the mock exams she puts up are very similar to the actual exams. it's a hard class for a reason.
She's an OK professor. She goes really fast through her lectures, so you have to keep up with her or you'll fall behind. She gives a good amount of extra credit which is a godsend to any class. Tests are somewhat difficult, but she gives a practice test that is similar to the real test.
Yerkes is a professor who knows what she is teaching, but sometimes goes too far in depth (for 102). The exams were typically similar to the practice exams, but often the questions were tricky. Several times there were wrong answers on the keys for exams, but upon confronting her she would give me points back. Good if you know have prior knowledge
Her class is, and test are very hard. But she is very nice, smart and willing to help you. Pay attention in class and do the homework and quizzes to help study. Exams are usually curved pretty well.
She is very condescending when you go to get help, and makes you feel really stupid for not understanding chemistry. She moves through it so fast it is so hard to catch a grasp on any certain concept... Avoid her section if possible.
Tests are wayyyy harder than homework problems and quizzes.
Great woman. Clearly knows what she is teaching and hands out plenty of practice. Also has power points which are helpful to study off of. Always willing to help as well.
