Whatever he teaches in class has no relevance to the textbook whatsoever. TERRIBLE TA's. Might not be his fault but TA's do what he tells them to do, right? I guess it's experience that he requires to know how to get his students good grades. This is my second semester at UTM, i did first semester Bio with 85% final grade. Not confident this time.

What an awesome professor! Loved going to his lectures since they were always so interesting. There was never a time when I didn't learn something completely out of the box and unheard of in his lectures. The tests were easy, most from past year's tests :X and the exam was a fair game. Go to his lectures and pay attention! You'll be fine :)

Amazing professor, very easy to follow and makes you enjoy something as difficult as the topic of diversity. Readings are essential for the midterm BUT for the exam, he tends to focus on the most recent lecture material, which is why the exam is so hard since we study straight from the textbook. All in all, he's a great prof!

I respect him as a professor because by his lectures, you can tell he REALLY loves what he does. However, in a nutshell: In lecture, he grasps a few key concepts from the textbook and explains minimally, rest of lecture is just examples. BUT WILL TEST ON THE KEY CONCEPTS IN MUCH MORE DEPTH. nice person, not a great prof. bro's lectures are empty when relating to the content, and goes surface level, making you need to read so much after lectures. concepts are okay to teach to yourself, but test formats force you to remember everything. like 1st test was on one chapter, 2nd on 4-5 chapters. its cool to hear him talk abt whales tho.

good luck to whoever takes him, basically just memorize the whole textbook. Lectures don't mean anything. Good guy though.

Took this class in 2022 and it was honestly the highlight of my final year of undergrad. He's really passionate about the topic and somehow gets you interested in marine mammals as well. He's very kind and just wants people to show interest. Would highly recommend for upper-level small-ish classes as he is really able to interact with everyone.

Like many reviews have already said, Professor Richter is clearly a pleasant guy, no doubt. But the lecture content is not very helpful in terms of preparing for midterms and exams. The textbook is definitely your friend in this course, which is a real shame because Professor Richter does seem to find joy in teaching. I would say... try it out.

he cant stop talking about whales and his his term tests are basically memorizing each section in the textbook word for word. Labs are okay.

Richter's lectures can be hit or miss, but using tools like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook helped me ace the exams. The content is challenging but doable if you stay on top of the material.

He was a super nice guy, but his lectures were not very engaging or interesting. I mostly studied for the tests using textbook material since the lecture slides did not provide much. It was ok to skip lectures and the tutorials did not teach me anything.. mostly self studying..

There are those who are immensely gifted and qualified in their field, but their skills just don't translate to teaching. Richter is one of those people. Lectures are so unbelievably boring, there's no text on his slides (literally just pictures) and in my 4 years at UTM, this is the only course I came out of genuinely not knowing what I learned.

Took the class a few years ago, but I genuinely do not think I learned anything in this class. I have no clue what kind of sorcery occurred for him to talk about mostly irrelevant topics in all his lectures yet I still did completely fine on the tests. Nearly, if not completely, pointless lectures. Read the textbook, do assignments and you're good.

Super nice prof, hes so funny and caring, but his tests and exams are insane. The lectures dont contribute to any understanding of the course, the tests are odd questions from the textbook. I feel the tests dont properly give us a chance to show understanding, most ppl I know did horrible first two midterms. he's super nice, but bad tests

As kind and willing as he is to respond to questions after class, I will never understand why he refuses to actually teach something of substance during the lectures. Disappointing because the textbook content was interesting. I just wish he made more effort to explain and go through RELEVANT topics.

Very kind and he makes his tests very easy if you rely on textbook and ONLY textbook. unfortunately his lectures are not very useful and he should've made that known at the beginning so students wouldnt struggle on the tests. if anyone ever takes his class, just use the textbook and u will succeed his courses no doubt
