Most quotable teacher ever! Funny and nice. Honestly cares how you are doing. Very open to questions and opinions. Workload is a bit much, but definitely can be done. Do not get behind though! Participation required. I've taken ENG 112 & ENG 224 with him and recommend to all.
He's a great teacher but he expects your writing to be out of this world. Read all of the books because the mini quizzes are easy points and can really bump up your grade.
He's very passionate about his work! An entertaining and informative class. Eager to help his students, kind of a tough grader, especially on the final paper, but he lets you rewrite it and tells you exactly how to get a good grade on it. I recommend him to English majors or people interested in the subject material.
Very passionate about his work, and he is very knowledgable! However, I don't recommend taking this (ENG224) as a general ed course - if you're an English major, you will LOVE it, but the workload is a bit much for us nonmajors. Very helpful though, if you email him/go to office hours you'll get better, individualized help. A very nice man as well.
By all means, take ENG 224 with Dr. Chris Apap! He is so friendly and approachable and he really cares about his students. He wants to see you pass his class and he hands out a TON of extra credit. His quizzes are super easy and his exams are take home which is very nice. Dr. Apap is a wonderful teacher and to me, now, an even dearer friend.
I'm sorry but Apap was a terrible professor. The week before classes ended, he told me the grade I would recieve (which was an okay grade) and then ended up failing me. When I emailed him why, he was rude and said my final was "inadequate" and that's it. He expects 400 level responses but teaches at a 200 level. Him and his class were ridiculous.
I hated literature coming into the course. Still do. But he made it interesting and made it something I can appreciate. He gives you every possible resource but you have to utilize it. He's incredibly enthusiastic with his field and really is involved with his students.
One of the best Prof.s I've ever had. Very helpful and the class wasn't too hard as long as you actually cared and did your work.
I just took American Lit with him. I would not recommended this teacher to you. I am a b average student. I received the worst grades in his class. His assignments were very contradicting. He grades to hard on your writing. If you want to read all day everyday go to his office hours and still fail. Go for it. Worst class I have ever had.
This man's brilliant. Disgustingly smart and very passionate about the literature. Lots of writing. Four close readings (writing assignments) or 3 if you choose not to do the fourth one to get a higher grade. Mid-term and final are papers, and there's a comprehensive paper. Difficult grader. Go to the extra credit events! They'll boost your grade.
I just took American Lit summer session with him. I would not recommended this teacher to you. I am A student. I barley passed the class. The work load was insane. He believes every student is an ENG major. I did study groups, tutoring and meetings with him and barley passed. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Apap grades hard, but is a respectable teacher. He takes his job very serious and the courseload is a lot. 4-5 novels are read and short papers and quizzes go along with these. The final was a long series of papers that was VERY hard if you are not a writing major.
If you are an English major, this is professor you want to take. One of the smartest professors I have had, and his knowledge is useful and helpful. However, I would not recommend taking this as a GenEd course, unless you are a History major. An excellent professor, but the workload and scope may not be appealing to non-English students.
I am a better writer because of this class. Don't take this class if you don't want to read 19th century literature and write about 4 papers. Final was a 6-8 page paper that you could build off of another paper you wrote within the semester. I worked hard and got a 4.0 but many classmates complained about harsh grading.
I'm not an English major, but I don't find the workload to be too much at all. he is very accommodating and approachable. Apap challenges you, and yes, you have to come to class and do the assignments and reading. However, his lectures are incredibly interesting, and you can tell he truly loves what he is teaching. Favorite professor so far.
His classes are usually filled with English majors, but I took it as a general education. Some good books are read throughout the course, but his lectures are never ending. He's very passionate about the topic, and always has a lot to say. The class isn't too hard. Attendance is mandatory. He wants people to participate. Kind of annoying at times.
Fabulous teacher! He is very passionate about the material but makes class interesting, even if you aren't interested in it. He does keep you until the very end of class every night. He is easy to talk to and its not frightening speaking up in class because he knows how to make you feel like your answer it always right. I def. recommend him!
Proper Apap is very passionate about his subject. In fact, he gets you excited about works you would otherwise think boring. He is very accomadating if you ever you need help. Make sure you take good notes because he is very particular about what he looks for in a paper.
He's well spoken, intelligent, and knows the material, but will really screw you over on grading. He teaches at a 200 level, and grades at a doctorate level. Interesting, far-fetched lectures, but wouldn't recommend the class. Doesn't make exceptions/let you catch up, even if you're sick. Not seeing how people enjoy this at all. Best of luck!
I really enjoyed Apap! He was very friendly and helpful. He is a tough grader but just get close with him and he will help you a lot. I realized people who never visited his office hours were people who didn't do as well as people who did visit. I would recommend and take him again!
This professor is an extremely hard grader. Attendance is mandatory and their is a lot of required reading from different novels. I felt as thought no matter how hard I worked on my assignments he never gave out fair grades. Would not recommend him, extremely difficult.
He is an extremely hard grader! Make sure to take advantage of office hours if you want a higher grade. Also, make sure you participate in discussions!
He is very animated about the subject. He gives out so much extra credit and by doing it you are practicing for the exams. He gives out quizzes on the reading that are easy so long as you keep up. It's not very hard and he's willing to help anyone who is struggling.
SUCH a great professor! The reading is a bit much, however it is a literature class so it's to be expected. Only one novel, then just a lot of short stories and a play. Very passionate and humorous- take lots of notes and use info from them on the take home midterm/final! Lots of extra credit. Definitely recommend!
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER! He cares, he learns your names, he wants you to pass, he's the professor you wish you had for every class. I will take more of his courses because he's that awesome. He's kind of a hard grader but it's not too bad. TAKE HIS CLASSES!
He is a great professor. He really wants all of his students to do well. He gives a lot of extra credit and his quizzes are really easy.
Awesome professor, very passionate about the material and what he teaches. Puts a lot of character and personality into his lectures. Gives ample extra opportunities. I enjoyed his class so much, I arranged to take another one of his class the following semester.
Such a great professor. He is easy to come to and get help. You will enjoy his class every time you go. Very fun and compassionate teacher about the subject and cares about his students and will help you if you are not understanding the material.
Apap was a great professor. He is helpful, and passionate about what he does. As long as you take good notes every class you'll do fine in this class. He gives out a lot of extra credit assignments as well.
Participation was 25% of the grade, the Midterm and Final was 70% of the grade and were take home essay prompts that were rather vague and difficult to answer. He gave out quizzes worth 5% of the grade at the beginning of class periods which if you're late he did not let you take. I did not enjoy class due to his rantings against males.
Apap is a very intelligent English Professor. However, the workload is intense and he is a very hard grader! The midterm and the final were the death of me,but thanks to practice from the extra credit assignments (which I recommend you do!!), I ended up with a 4.0. One of the hardest 4.0's I've ever had to work for!!
I didn't plan on taking this class at all. It was the only one open for that time and for that required General Ed. Apap made the whole class. With any other teacher I would have been bored to tears. The lectures were fun and entertaining. There is a lot of reading and he is a fair but hard grader. But I loved him and how he taught
I'm sorry but I cannot stand him. He has a huge ego and loves listening to himself talk. He asks the class questions about the reading and when someone says the right answer before he wants you to he'll shrug it off or make you look wrong. I absolutely would not take this teacher, this is a general ed class and he treats it like its not.
Best professors at Oakland. Most of reading are short stories. As long as you read that is assigned and participate in class you will do great. Yes, he is a little full of himself but overall very nice man.
As a freshman this was my first 200 level class and I LOVED it. Apap was funny and really made class enjoyable. He does have online work that is due by the end of the semester along with take home exams but if you work hard he rewards you. You read a lot but his lectures are very funny. He listens to your opinions and wants to hear them. TAKE HIM!
Although most may not be excited that there's reading that goes along with the class, some of the readings are actually interesting. He loves what he teaches so he greats and welcoming and fun environment. He also offered at least 3 extra credit opportunities. He's very down to earth and understanding as well. Overall, a GREAT instructor.
Prof. Apap is amazing. I had him as a freshman and was so worried the class would be terrible. It was NOT! He is very passionate and always has great lectures. Participation is essential to this class. Apap is a very friendly and easy to talk to prof. I would highly recommend this class if you're someone who can work hard and listen well.
LIked this professor He made time to see his students outside of class if they needed help on something, there were five novels that we had to read for this class, overall he was an awesome guy and i would recommend this guy for students to take his classes that he teaches , and no exams/quizzes for AMS 300
An awesome professor. I enjoyed his class so much, he was always prepared and the lectures were so engaging. Although there is a reading assignment for every class, they're not that long and they're actually really enjoyable. He is a bit of a tough grader but as long as you go to class, take good notes and participate you will love the class.
Professor Apap is an excellent professor. I took this as a gen. ed. and ended up enjoying the class for the most part. His enthusiasm is contagious. He expects participation but it really isn't too much to ask for. There are only a few writing assignments, but they require good notes to do well on them. He grades tough too, but it is fair.
Chris was a great teacher. The assignments were fairly easy if you did the reading and participated in class. He limits the reading way less than any other english class.
The material was boring, but he's a good professor. There isn't a lot of work, but you need to do the reading. It's usually less than 20 pages, normally closer to 10, but bring coffee. I had a hard time keeping my eyes open.
I really, really loved this class. It made me think about literature in many perspectives and made me want to do Literature as a career. His enthusiasm is infectious!
Dr. Apap is an awesome instructor. You do need to actually do the reading, but class is easy as long as you mention like "yep, there's commas in there". He's a really cool and woke dude, and you don't feel like the straight white guy is preaching to you about ethnic struggles
He says if you don't read the book you won't pass, but I didn't read a single poem or story and got an A on every test. As long as you take very good specific notes and listen to everything that is talked about in class, you can pass the class with a good grade no problem without even opening the book outside of class. He is a good prof/grades fair
Apap was one of the best professors Ive had at OU. He limits the weekly readings so theres not a ton, and the class discussions of the reading are intriguing. If you take decent notes, youll do fine on the exams as well.
Dr. Apap was a great professor. The class was about 3 hours long and at the end of a long day so that was tough, but if it had been during fall or winter that wouldn't have been an issue. There were 3 exams, a take home essay and a presentation. Pay attention to lectures and focus on what is talked about in class. I would take a class by him again.
Professor Apap was just great! Even though lectures are long, he made them interesting. Attendance and participation is worth a big chunk of your grade. He is very understanding and responds quickly to emails. He gives a couple opportunities for extra credit. Not a super easy class, but very possible to do well if you put in the effort.
I took Prof. Apap's Lit of Ethnic America. He was awesome! Grading was easy as long as you read the 10-20 pg assignment before class and took notes during lecture. Show up, pay attention, pass. He understood that his class was a gen ed and didnt expect too much time outside of lecture for homework. Would take him again 100%
passionate professor. Even during a night class, he still has you engaged in the material. Dont take this class if you want an easy A or a blowoff though. He is going to make you work and is a bit of a tough grader. In my opinion, it is worth it. always willing to help students one-on-one and is caring. Really loved his personality & teaching style
Apap was a pretty good professor and a nice guy in general. He wants us to understand the material and he makes sure we all jump in on class conversations while close-reading a paragraph or so from whatever book we're currently reading.
Professor Apap gives amazing lectures and really drives class discussions. He interprets the text so that everything becomes clear. Has clear guidelines and is organized. Exams are easy if you participate in discussions. He's really a nice and funny guy, love him
Such a caring and genuine guy! I love his teaching style, he is so enthusiastic and fun. He is fair & transparent grading wise. His grading is a bit tough but if you go to his office hours he will tell you what to fix to do better. Never have I felt more welcome to office hours and I am coming out of this class confident I am now a better writer.
Great guy. Super funny and nice. He is an amazing mentor, and he explains everything about the readings from homework. Always willing to work with students, and he is genuinely interested in your life. Would take again if I had more time left at Oakland :/
Did not appreciate the fact that we talked about politics all the time in a literature class. Being a Christian I felt very offended by one of the themes we talked about in class. The theme was religion is the problem with humanity and that religion distorts peoples world views. People should have the freedom to believe what they want to believe.
as long as you read, show up, and participate, the tests will be easy and youll end up with a good grade
Professor Apap is amazing! The class is all reading, but he makes lectures really interesting. He's a super cool person and encourages meeting with him during office hours. As long as you read the books and go to lectures you'll be fine. He really preps his students well for the exams so you'll never feel blindsided by the questions.
Very talk heavy. Dont take unless you can sit still 3+ hours
I took App for his ethnic literature class and all the readings were did were very disturbing and upsetting. He's pretty harsh at grading the short answers on the exams and I consider myself to be a great writer, only 10 multiple choice questions on the exam, 5 ID questions and 3 short answers that are worth 30 points EACH.
He's getting pretty tough since he's be reviewing his reviews. I would say participation is overly weighted. Extra credit is great multiple kinds. Exams are fairly easy be good at memorizing poets. And be prepared to read. Beware of cell phone use he will call you out in front of everyone.
Prof Apap is a super nice guy and is willing to help students out. However, he grades extremely hard! I am a 4.0 student and I did not receive an A on any of his tests. This class requires a lot of reading and super boring lectures. He lectures every single day and he never lets out early! Participation in discussion is a big part of your grade.
He's really nice and overall great professor. Looking for a gen ed to easily ace? This is not the course for you. Participation is majority of grade and it seems you have to participate a ton for a decent grade. Essay portion of tests are graded tough and I consider myself a good writer. You gotta put in work for that A in this class.
The picture perfect literature professor. Most of your grade comes from the tests and attendance/participation. If you miss class and don't get the notes the tests will be very hard. Come to class, take bare minimum notes, and listen you will pass this class with at least a C. He really cares about his students and has clear grading requirements
I took Apap for Ethnic Literature of America, and I actually thought it was easy. If you struggle, make sure to get with him early. This class is passable if you are willing to put in the time to read the material and visit him during office hours!
All the readings were extremely explicit and disturbing, he even said if you do not feel uncomfortable at least once a day in his class there's something wrong with you. Exams are 10 multiple choice, a few ID questions and 3 essay questions that are impossible. I consider myself an excellent writer and could never come close to getting 100% on them
Apap was one of the best professors I have had here at Oakland. He is always available to meet with you one on one and will do everything he can to make it easier for you. He really cares about his students success. I took American Literature with him during COVID-19. He grades his short answer questions difficultly but are definitely passable.
Professor Apap was one of my first experiences doing a fully-online class due to COVID-19, and it was quite a pleasant experience. He lays out the expectations for assignments well and is very open to communication.
I had Professor Apap for American Literature and I thought he was great! You did have to watch a lot of video lectures with everything being online, but he was very enthusiastic and made the videos more interesting to watch. If you watch the lectures and take good notes on them, you'll do well in the class.
Professor Apap is excellent. He not only knows but deeply cares about the subject matter. I had him for HC2020: Moby-D*** and Popular Culture. He is extremely knowledgeable of the book and goes above and beyond in being reachable by students. In fact, he even offers extra credit for meeting with him. I highly recommend him.
Christopher Apap was by far one of my favorites professors of OU. Lectures are enjoyable cause he's a passionate guy, very caring that everyone understands what is going on in the books. Easy A if you just read and participate. Great guy.
Professor Apap was wonderful. Every week was clearly organized on Moodle. His lectures every week are usually pretty long, but they're so helpful. He wants to make sure every student is able to understand the material we are going over. He always responds to forum posts and emails. His feedback is always helpful. I would recommend Apap to everyone.
Prof. Apap is very passionate about literature and listens carefully to what everyone has to say. He takes up the whole 3 hours but gives a break halfway through. The passages we read and analyze together are intense, and it can even get emotional at times! He is very openminded, thoughtful, and engaging as a speaker. Make sure you show up and talk
Professor Apap is a great teacher. He interacts with students frequently and offers online meetings if you need help. The course involves a lot of reading but it is not to an overwhelming point. 10/10 recommend.
Best Professor I have had in my lifetime. He cares about his students and his material is straight forward. I have had him as my professor twice and both times I was extremely happy with his lectures. Too bad I haven't gotten the chance to talk to him in person. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Dr. Apap is the best professor I've had at OU. There is quite a bit of reading, but if you pay attention in class you'll do fine! Lots of EC opportunities, and he is always available for help. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the final paper. Make sure you take notes- it makes the exams easy peasy. If you try & want to do well, you will!
He's a solid professor. He's passionate in his lectures and is a nice person. The class has a decent amount of reading but it's not an impossible amount if you manage time well and don't procrastinate. He also gives out a lot of extra credit if you need some to boost your grade.
Professor Apap is amazing, his lectures are very charismatic and he really tries to keep you engaged. There is lots of reading buts its nothing hard, take notes in class and the exams are a breeze. The final paper can be tough but ask questions and you will do fine. Overall I highly recommend him, his is one of the nicest teachers at OU!
Professor Apap was great. Participation was mandatory. Hes very helpful and caring If you ever start struggling with the class let him know and he will help you out.
Overall a teacher who cares about what they teach. Ethic literature didn't interest me in the slightest, but this class actually wasn't that bad.
Extremely tough grader with borderline unrealistic expectations. Every paper is graded like it is a dissertation, and the manner in which he criticizes your work is insulting. If you have to take his class, be sure to participate, because you're in for a rough time if you don't. 0/10 would not take again.
He was a very nice professor and very understanding. Participation is key in this class as if you do not participate, your grade will show. The weekly quizzes are not hard as they go over that week's readings. If you go to class or watch his lectures, the quizzes and exams are not bad at all.
Participation matters in his class as long as you do discussion boards every week you can put almost anything down relating to what you read and he would give you a grade for it except for midterm and final. very nice teacher, tough grader. visit tutoring center to get deeper understanding of poems read.the ratings on here is somewhat true bout him
Pretty easygoing professor. Nice and understanding and encourages you to become better in his class
Professor Apap is great! He gives amazing and engaging lectures. Beware you will have to participate in class. However he accepts emailed participation if you feel uncomfortable in class. He is very passionate about what he is teaching and I can't help but pay attention to him.
Professor Apap is one of the most engaging professors I have had thus far. He is incredibly accessible outside of class and wants his students to succeed in his class. Refreshing to see a professor actually excited to teach a course, actually makes me want to engage in literature more. 10/10 would take again.
Lots of reading but not strenuous. Be open minded for the content and material. He can be a bit of a hard grader but not most of the time. I love the way he views things and the different perspectives he puts out for the class to think about.
I had Apap for ENG 1500 and he was by far my fave prof. He really cares and gets excited about what he is teaching and all his lectures are so entertaining. The selection of literature that we were required to read was endlessly entertaining. I felt I learned SO MUCH about different Ethnic American authors and as long as u read, u'll be fine.
Im not one to complain about a professor but Apap is SO terrible!! The work load is unreal. This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROF, unless you want to tank your GPA. His feedback is extremely rude.
Professor Apap is very passionate about what he teaches and provides quality feedback with assignments. At times can be a tough grader. But the grade you get in this course is solely based on the effort you make. Overall pretty good professor!
You can tell Dr. Apap is passionate about literature. I took the online American Lit course in Fall '23, and it wasn't too bad. Lots of lengthy video lectures to watch and readings to do, but doable. Remember this is a college level lit course, so its supposed to be challenging. He is a tough grader but fair overall. Go to him for help!
Prof Apap is very sweet and is genuinely interested in his students. There is a book required for the class and you get points for every time you speak in class. He also offers extra credit. Theres three exams and one paper.
Sweetest professor ever! Highly recommend! Extremely easy to get along with and just so so nice!
I don't usually write reviews, but prof Apap was one of my favorite professors at OU. He is so kind and you can tell he is so passionate about teaching and literature. Yes, you will have to read often, but it is honestly pretty interesting (coming from someone who does not read at all). Please take him!!!!
A really great guy who cares a lot about what he is teaching. He is aware that most students that are taking his classes are not English majors and caters to every ones levels. Tests are difficult and stressful but not impossible. Not an easy class but worth the effort.
DO NOT TAKE! WARNING YOU ALL! class based off of readings (so much), discussions, and quizzes. so much work every week. tough grader for essays and discussions. If you need to take lit class for a gen ed don't take this one. This is my 3rd B in college. and its in literature! if that doesn't tell you to not take this class, idk what does.
Amazing Professor!! Lots of reading but split into easy sections. Participation is not mandatory but will improve your grade (done in class or online). Very easy to get extra credit. Easily accessible outside of class. Very entertaining and well spoken. I loved going to his class each time! Very easy class, if you fail, that's your own fault.
Dr. Apap is a good professor and is passionate about what he teaches, but the overall course load and his expectations are outrageous for a 1500 level class. Although he knows most people are taking his class to fulfill literature credits, he still treats you like your an English major. He is however open to helping.
Worst teacher. There are Discussion post every week they take time you need to be very detailed and have 300 words or he will grade hard. The test ARE HARD. It's 25 questions mult choice and 2 essay questions that need to be very specific, detailed, what he likes and an hour timed. I got 25 points off for doing a poem instead of a close reading.
Mr. Apap is a nice guy, and he is passionate about his teaching. He doesn't require you to be in class, but he does encourage participation either through email or in class. There is a lot of reading whether its short stories or books but its English so like its expected, he's a good grader and gets back to emails fairly quick.
What I learned from Apap's class: -If you're of Anglo descent, you're evil and no problems exist for you -Find offense in everything -Everything is offensive -If you pronounce a person's name wrong that has a Non-English name, you are a horrible monster -Use the term LatinX (even though gringos invented it and latinos find it offensive) F CRT
Apap is a chill professor. His class consisted of a lot of reading. Typically 20-30 pages a night. Participation is a must in his class. If you aren't participating, you will most likely fail. He had 3 tests on the books we read including one essay. The essay was pretty annoying especially since he grades it pretty harshly.
So much participation goes into your grade. Reading material for me was rough as I'm not a reader. If you don't interact with him or the class you will get overlooked. You get 5 free-bee absences. After that it starts to effect your grade.
I honestly really liked him and thought the class was very doable because I love reading, but for people who aren't used to reading it could be a lot. Very kind and willing to help you out, 3 exams total and 1 paper. As long as you read and come to class prepared the class is not hard at all. Very nice professor!
Professor Apap was extremely kind to all students and genuinely values everyone's opinions. He made you feel so seen and respected if you ever had any concerns and was easy to contact if you had any issues/struggles. The reading was at most 40-50 pages per class, but was pretty manageable. The class discussions were always so fun!
This man is nice, though his feedback is a bit hard to decipher. He always expects 110% and can sometimes make you feel a bit stupid if you're not perfect. But that seems to be subconscious anyway, he does his best. I didn't really like him as a person, but he was a good enough professor. I would recommend him to others.
The class had a lot of readings/quizzes. I took this over the summer with a full-time job and other summer classes and managed to do everything with 2-3 hours Friday then 1-2 hours on Sundays. He is very picky but nice about it. Learn how to do close reading well and you will get an A. Extra credit is annoying to do but offered if needed.
Tough grader and super picky.
Professor Apap is passionate about his subject and is very knowledgeable on what he teaches. He is always accessible if anyone needs help. The class isn't hard. The reading was usually around 10-40 pages per week, with the exception of Huck Finn. There are three exams and one paper and you will do well if you take good notes and attend class.
He was very picky about the tests, which were super hard by the way, after reading the books he made us read, I really felt like I lost brain cells because the books made absolutely no sense. He seemed to act as if we didn't have other responsibilities, so he would be upset that I didn't read a whole book by the next day. I hated that class.
